Beste Wikimedia Foundation,

Wij, ondergetekenden, zijn betrokken bij Wikimedia Commons, het centrale mediaplatform van de Wikimedia-beweging. Commons is waar de beweging samenkomt: we maken foto's, we uploaden bestanden, we voegen afbeeldingen toe aan Wikipedia-artikelen, we behandelen juridische kwesties, we leren anderen hoe ze Commons kunnen gebruiken, we werken samen met culturele instellingen (GLAM), of we ondersteunen Commons op andere manieren.

Commons is een van de grootste online mediacollecties ter wereld. Het biedt vrij gelicenseerde bestanden aan iedereen: via Wikipedia en andere Wikimedia-wiki's, en ook vele andere websites en individuen in de wereld. Dit maakt Commons van groot belang voor miljoenen mensen op de planeet.

Maar we maken ons zorgen over de huidige situatie en de toekomst van Wikimedia Commons. Ons platform vecht om relevant te blijven in een wereld die gedomineerd wordt door visuele platforms (zoals YouTube, Instagram, Flickr etc.) die voortdurend in ontwikkeling zijn. Commons, daarentegen, voldoet niet aan de moderne normen voor bruikbaarheid en worstelt met talrijke fundamentele problemen. Het is moeilijk voor nieuwe gebruikers om te beginnen en frustrerend voor bestaande gebruikers om inhoud te uploaden, te herstellen, te zoeken en te hergebruiken.[1]

Wij hebben begrepen dat de Wikimedia Foundation in het laatste jaarplan heeft erkend dat "er geen formele verantwoording is afgelegd voor de kerninfrastructuur van Commons die dringend aan reparatie toe is".[2] Wij worden ook aangemoedigd door de aanbeveling van de Strategy 2030 om de ervaring van gebruikers op onze platforms te verbeteren.[3] Hoewel dat bemoedigend is, willen wij onmiddellijke behoeften vaststellen en groot denken (think big!) over de toekomst van Commons.

Wij maken ons onder meer zorgen over:

  • Commons kan een ongemakkelijke omgeving zijn voor nieuwe gebruikers die nog veel moeten leren om een zinvolle bijdrage te kunnen leveren.[4][5] Vergeleken met andere websites voor fotografen is het geen erg aantrekkelijke site.
  • Commons vereist een goede kennis van het Engels, hoewel het ernaar streeft een meertalig platform te zijn.[6]
  • Commons is moeilijk te gebruiken voor mobiele gebruikers.[7][8]
  • Commons heeft schaalproblemen, omdat het moeite heeft met bulkuploads of grote sets bestanden.[9]
  • Commons mist moderne methoden voor interactie met de communities, zoals meldingen of het achterlaten van feedback voor gebruikers.[10]
  • Commons heeft een gebrek aan ontwikkeling van de kernfunctionaliteit. Tools die door vrijwilligers zijn geschreven hebben bijgedragen aan nieuwe innovaties en functionaliteit, maar het is moeilijk om deze tools te onderhouden.
  • Commons ondersteunt slechts in beperkte mate bestandsformaten.[11][12][13]
  • Commons heeft geen ondersteuning voor video-inhoud die verder gaat dan standaard afspelen, zoals gezamenlijk bewerken en creëren.

Enerzijds zijn wij erg blij met snelle oplossingen voor de meest urgente problemen, zoals het uploaden van materiaal. Anderzijds zijn we van mening dat de verbetering van Commons niet alleen een softwareprobleem is: we moeten een brede discussie voeren om uit te vinden wat voor een duurzaam platform we in de toekomst nodig hebben, voor een betere algemene gebruikerservaring, voor een betere coördinatie op het platform en voor de behoeften van iedereen die werkt voor vrije kennis.

We hebben ook een diepgaand onderzoek nodig over de lange termijn: misschien is de MediaWiki-software zoals die nu wordt gebruikt voor Wikimedia Commons niet de beste manier om met mediabestanden te werken.

Met deze open brief willen we benadrukken hoe belangrijk Commons is voor de communities. Samen met de communities kan en moet de Wikimedia Foundation een verschil maken. 'We staan te springen om met een toegewijd team te werken aan een road map en oplossingen.

  88. I totally agree. For instance as one of the largest contributors of the images to project I struggle to apply and teach correct categorization, but after all categories are totally invisible to mobile users. I receive every week emails and messages from people all over the world asking for "similar images", "higher resolution" or info that could be easily found in the categories or in the general layout of the files. If the site had a personality then it would be a person determined to make sure that the number of problems exceeded the number of photos. Photos that are "not for commercial use" are all over commercial sites like google, facebook and twitter but our non-commercial site cannot unpick the legal barriers that others steam roller over. I use SDoC, which is a really good innovation. I'm interested in content issues such as accuracy of map metadata, and the changing of titles (comes up in heraldry). I see improvements in documentation that would be helpful. While I myself have not experienced problems at the level of the community, I think some discussion of the place of bot operators would be a good idea.[reply]

  456. Commons is definitely long over due for some updates. The limited support for file formats and difficulty using it on mobile devices are two major issues. Uploading also use improvement. Uploading singles files or doing bulk uploads are both needlessly obtuse and often take more effort then it's worth. Especially when it comes to doing bulk uploading.   459. I've been a Wikipedian since 2005, and on Commons basically since it started. After reading the list of grievances in this letter, I feel strongly that, in hindsight, the decision to base this platform on a wiki was a bad idea. It sounds like we need to throw that out and adopt something more similar to Flickr and other modern websites. It probably needs a standalone app too. As far as communications and notifications go, I still don't understand why the Foundation developed Flow but then coward from implementing it on the major existing wikis (Commons, Wikipedia, Wiktionary, etc.).
