First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States 2023[edit]

Hello! In 2021, you contributed to Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States. Thanks to people like you, it was a great success with over 500 people contributing over 5,500 photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the country. Hundreds of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, improving our open knowledge about United States history, culture, and heritage. You can see the top-ten winners of the US competition here.

While the United States did not participate in Wiki Loves Monuments in 2022, I'm pleased to say that we're back for 2023 through the month of October! I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. Check out our 2023 event page for more information.

"I don't see this falling into overcat"[edit]

Regarding your reverts: [1], [2], [3]:

  1. Did you read COM:OVERCAT?
  2. Did you read the part of COM:OVERCAT where it states "The general rule is always place an image in the most specific categories, and not in the levels above those."?
  3. Did you check the categories of Category:Depths of Wikipedia?
  4. Did you see that Category:Depths of Wikipedia is a subcategory of Category:Annie Rauwerda?
  5. Did you realize that if an image is in Category:Depths of Wikipedia then it should not also be in Category:Annie Rauwerda per COM:OVERCAT?
  6. Did you open Help:Gadget-Cat-a-lot within Category:Depths of Wikipedia, select all images, and then select "Check over-categorization?" If you did, what did you see? If you didn't why don't you do that right now and report what you see?

(talk page stalker) @DanielPenfield: Without getting into specific images, Annie Rauwerda runs Depths of Wikipedia, but not every picture of a Depths of Wikipedia event depicts Annie Rauwerda. Some do, though. If it were a CEO of a company, I suppose we would have e.g. "Depths of Wikipedia people". In this case, there is no other person, so it would be a category of one. So in the 17 years I've edited on Commons, I've never seen a case where people were so concerned about distinguishing between "images depicting a person in the flesh" as opposed to "images depicting things related to a person, but with that person not depicted", but if you feel that strongly about it, there are already categories called Category:Annie Rauwerda at Wikimania 2023 (see also its ancestor category Category:People at events) and Category:People giving presentations, so I'd use those for inspiration: Category:Annie Rauwerda at Wikimedia Foundation events, Category:Annie Rauwerda at Wikipedia Day 2024, Category:Annie Rauwerda at Depths of Wikipedia events, Category:Annie Rauwerda giving presentations about Depths of Wikipedia or similar would be a way to distinguish "Annie Rauwerda in the flesh" versus "things related to Annie Rauwerda containing no depictions of Annie Rauwerda". Another option is to inquire about precedents at COM:Village pump, but I'd expect that to turn into a "see Category:People at events". -- DanielPenfield (talk) 20:23, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Pardon the late response @DanielPenfield. I was AFK these past couple weeks and did not have time to formulate my thoughts. I respect the time you've spent here editing on commons and per COM:OVERCAT you are correct. It became semantically confusing when a social media account is both run by a person and an independent entity. @Rhododendrites thank you for your insight and implementation: Category:Annie Rauwerda at Wikipedia Day NYC 2024 makes sense. @DanielPenfield sorry any disturbance this may have caused you.
