Welcome to Wikimedia Commons, SBB Historic!

Welcome, and, about dates.[edit]

Hi, Welcome to Wikimedia Commons! I see you upload a fair few pictures with an undetermined date. Please review Template:Other date. If you put in {{Before|1922}} instead of <1922, the "before" part gets translated into all the languages Wikimedia Commons is supported in. Full dates are formatted Year-Month-Day. I'll fix that in the uploads you've already made, and the latest version of Pattypan (please update) should do so too, but please keep this in mind. Thank you for contributing to Wikimedia Commons. --Vera (talk) 11:18, 21 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Benutzerverifizierung[edit]

SBB Historic

Thanks for uploading File:SBB Historic - 75 Jahre Gottahrdbahn 1957.pdf. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

File:SBB Historic - F 103 00011 002 Brunnen-Sisikon.tif has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Empty files[edit]

Hello!

The following files seem to be empty, do you think you can fix them?

Files

Jonteemil (talk) 22:43, 5 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Edit: They are not empty but have no thumbnail for some reason. Do you think you can fix this by reuploading? Or is it a bug?Jonteemil (talk) 23:11, 5 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

SBB Historic: Hi there, I've also noticed there was a problem with some of these pictures but I wasnt sure how to fix it. But I will try to re-upload them, thanks!

Hello, wait on the reuploading. I will create a Phabricator task to see if there is a larger problem at play here.Jonteemil (talk) 02:30, 7 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

SBB Historic: Do you have any news concerning the problem with the Adolph-Brown-Images or do you think they should be replaced by uploading new ones?

Yes, they are trying to fix it at phab:T290462, please don't reupload until they have come to a conclusion.Jonteemil (talk) 17:08, 4 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again. Two years later, but if you think you would be able to reupload the files I think it would be good. phab:T290462 evidently didn't fix the problem. Jonteemil (talk) 23:30, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks for the update, I'll see if I can upload once again. SBB Historic (talk) 08:36, 7 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reminder[edit]

Hi SBB Historic. I noticed that you've made a malformed rename request. When you want to rename a file with the {{Rename}} template (rather than the automatic RenameLink gadget's "move" link), you must follow the instructions in the template, including "a value between 1 and 6 which corresponds to the file renaming criteria!" Otherwise, you create more work for other people.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:27, 29 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jeff, thanks for the hint, i forgott to put a "1", now it should be ok. SBB Historic (talk) 14:17, 29 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:43, 30 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Station names[edit]

Hello, please have a look at:

Maybe an offset with names? A good thing is that Category:SBB_Historic_-_Berner_Hans-Rudolf_Bahnhofsfotografien has several views, some of which include an image of the station name shield. Thanks for uploading these photographs, most interesting! -- Enhancing999 (talk) 14:42, 14 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, thank you for your feedback. There was a small shift in the Upload-Excelsheet, I could fix the error now. SBB Historic (talk) 09:27, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. File:SBB Historic - F 122 00009 001 - Aesch Stationsgebaeude mit Gueterschuppen Strassenseite.jpg still reads "Aesch" instead of "Adliswil" (see the sign in the photo). Enhancing999 (talk) 17:10, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
my bad, changed that now. SBB Historic (talk) 11:17, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I added the station categories to a few images: ex: Category:Bad Ragaz railway station. I noticed we are missing a few categories, probably all for closed railway stations, ex: Category:Rüti bei Büren railway station. Eventually, someone might do the remaining ones [1]. If you have a simple way to add them, please do.

As several station buildings have similar designs, maybe a categorization by that could be done. Enhancing999 (talk) 09:23, 22 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Short update: Most images are now categorized by station. The remaining ones are directly at Category:Railway stations in Switzerland (mostly cases where the category still needs to be created or the name didn't match easily existing ones).
Template:Railway stations in Switzerland and categories like Category:Underground railway stations in Switzerland can help navigate the stations and find visually similar images. If you have ideas for more, you may want add them.
Also, I added Creator:Hans-Rudolf Berner (1938-2013) under "photographer=". It allows to specify the photographer in a more detailed way. Enhancing999 (talk) 06:20, 28 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for your work, very appreciated. SBB Historic (talk) 09:15, 28 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks to @Gürbetaler, the remaining ones are now done. I added a few categories based on the layout (see the template), but not yet based individual building types. A few people added categories for architects.
For coverage on Commons, a picture of each former station could help (preferably from when it was in use). Do you have a way to determine which ones we are still missing and possibly make them available?
To see use of stations, timetables are a good tool. I noticed we have a few individual pages of some editions, but PDF or djvu versions of original books would be good to have (if that is available and compatible with Commons licensing). Enhancing999 (talk) 11:39, 4 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Timetables since 2006 are available as PDFs from this official site: www.fahrplanfelder.ch/de/archiv/fahrplanfelder. I don' think that it is necessary/useful to copy them to Wiki Commons. Earlier timetabels are so far only available if somebody scanned them-- Gürbetaler (talk) 19:45, 4 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I got the impression that SBB Historic mostly works on pre-199x material, but maybe I'm wrong. With timetables, I have the ones at Category:Train timetables in Switzerland in mind (currently there are just individual pages). SBB Archives might have versions that are easier to scan than the actual printed ones. Some of the pages in that categories are in use, so they are useful on Commons. What parts are useful varies from one train line to another and not every Wikipedia might have the same view on that, but we don't want to make an editorial choice for all of them. David, what's your view on this? Enhancing999 (talk) 09:33, 8 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming requests[edit]

Hi SBB Historic, thanks for your contributions! Just now, I evaluated your renaming requests, but while adding the template you did not add an appropriate reason to your request. I felt the need to inform you about this. Please choose a suitable criterion from the list. Best, Kadı Message 11:08, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! Thank you for your message. Do you know which file is missing a criterion? I couldnt find one. I used the criterion 1 (at uploaders request) for most of the files with wrong names... maybe I forgott one. Thanks! SBB Historic (talk) 11:18, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Good afternoon, above a gallery with a list of the stations included in these pictures. Maybe you want to use it to gather category names. I will try to update it once we finished normalizing the names.

I noticed that Berne and Lucerne aren't included. For Commons, it doesn't matter that much as we get plenty of others. For the many smaller stations, it can be interesting to include also pictures from years where the general architecture hasn't changed, as many of these images are full of details interesting for some observers. In any case, the current collection provides an excellent cross-section by the time period covered and the geographic scope.

Thanks again for uploading these. - Enhancing999 (talk) 15:55, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, and thanks a lot for creating these lists. We've also noticed, that Berne and Lucerne are missing. We don't know why the photographer didnt take photos of Berne railway station. As for Lucerne, there are some Postcards in this collection showing the old railwaystation that burnt down in 1971, but we cannot upload these with a open-data-license because they were taken by a private photo studio. SBB Historic (talk) 12:07, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I should try to improve the categorization at Category:Luzern railway station. One should be able to distinguish easily between the old station and the current one.
Now that we started building one stations, would you have more images from SBB Historic photo collection railway stations of Switzerland that you'd want to make available? Enhancing999 (talk) 05:49, 25 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
files

There might be an issue with the date for the above files. Enhancing999 (talk) 21:24, 30 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thats right, I guess the error occured in the date-field of the excel-sheet used for the patty-pan upload. I hope we can fix these dates soner or later. Kind regards, SBB Historic (talk) 12:11, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It you add a list of the correct dates somewhere here I can update the file description pages. Enhancing999 (talk) 05:43, 25 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I removed the date for now and added them into Category:Maintenance of Railway stations in Switzerland (date removed). Possibly I missed some. Also, I couldn't fix some edits made based on this (a copy copied the date). Enhancing999 (talk) 07:36, 28 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Timetables[edit]

I'm not sure if you had seen my question about these above (at #Station names). Still like my idea ;) Enhancing999 (talk) 05:51, 25 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I can't see why the timetables in possession of SBBH should be easier to scan than others. I have scanned single pages from the timetables in our collection and I must say, it is not easy because of the binding. Moreover it is necessary to put a black paper behind the page, as the paper is so thin that the print of the backside would shine through. The big question is, who would do the scanning or pay for the scanning, as there thousands of pages and they need manual operation. What I can offer is a series of -timetables from about 1967 to 2005 that could be cut up for easier scanning. Gürbetaler (talk) 11:47, 27 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't know you were with SBBH. I thought there could be drafts and versions other than the retail print edition. Enhancing999 (talk) 10:43, 28 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not with SBBH. There are other collections of timetables. Gürbetaler (talk) 20:31, 28 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
For what it's worth, to chime in, I also personally have a collection of Swiss timetables starting in 1947. I have no digitization plans, but I'm happy to provide information if, for example, someone wants to know about specific train connections in a specific year. Hans-Rudolf Berner's photos on a map[edit]

Locations of geocoded photos on map of Switzerland

To make it easier to locate them, I added coordinates to most of them. The map to the right highlights some.

This finds some that still lack coordinates, including more complicated ones (for me), especially former railway stations and signal boxes. Enhancing999 (talk) 11:07, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Great work, thank you! SBB Historic (talk) 07:24, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Is it necessary to locate every single photo? See Category:Bern Fischermätteli railway station with five photos of the same old building. Gürbetaler (talk) 14:53, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Initially I thought it wasn't needed, but some applications seem to rely on coordinates being on the actual images. Thanks for your additions to the categories, I copied them over. Enhancing999 (talk) 15:12, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Walchwil - dates and descriptions[edit]

In Category:Walchwil railway station, there is some inconsistency with the years on uploaded photos. They seem to have replaced the goods shed and then the main building. Wikipedia unfortunately lacks dates for this too.

Also the description (and filename) of File:SBB Historic - F 122 01154 005 - Walchwil altes Stationsgebaeude und neuer Gueterschuppen.jpg seems to refer to the image at File:SBB Historic - F 122 01154 006 - Walchwil Stationsgebaeude mit Gueterschuppen Bahnseite.jpg. Enhancing999 (talk) 05:25, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I suppose I could just move them, but there is a risk that it gets out of sync, between title, filename, date, categories, coordinates and data you keep on these on your side. Enhancing999 (talk) 13:59, 21 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Stellwerkgebäude & Stellwerke > signal boxes[edit]

Signal boxes (individual buildings), available photos

When trying to geocode photos, I noticed that Commons had very few images of signal boxes and luckily Berner's collections included quite a few. Still, it could be expanded, hopefully into something with a comparable coverage. Where station buildings includes it ("winter garden"), it would generally be covered already.

If you have students looking for topics to investigate, it could interesting to see how their technology evolved over time from manual/mechanical/local to digital/centralized. The change seems to have implemented at different times and some steps skipped. There are a few blogs that give some insight in the question and maybe more already exists. Years[edit]

A few have 1980 (Category:1980 in rail transport in Switzerland), but even with ca. 1980. They may be off far:

The photo up for deletion — File:Deloading of locomotive in Haifa.jpg — appears to be from a panel at the Israel Railway Museum with a credit there to the SLM-Archiv. Can you weigh in on the discussion? Also, if a better version of the image can be uploaded by SBB Historic with correct information, that would be greatly appreciated. —Tcr25 (talk) 19:44, 6 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! This picture is contained in a Fotoalbum of the former company SLM Winterthur. These albums are now in the archives of SBB Historic. You can find the photo mentioned here: [4]https://www.sbbarchiv.ch/detail.aspx?ID=405444 . It would be possible, to upload a better version, if desired. SBB Historic (talk) 13:38, 7 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Fantastic! Thank you so much. If you could upload a new version with the proper info, that would be great and then we can delete this lower quality one. —Tcr25 (talk) 14:36, 7 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Stations without images (or categories)[edit]

Railway stations without image categories on Wikimedia Commons (May 2023)

As a reverse to the categorization work done on Berner's photos, here a map of stations without images (or at least categories) on Commons. The file description page includes a link to the tool generating this directly (and updating occasionally). Anyways, thanks again for your uploads.
