Perspective correction request[edit]

Hi, Daniel.

I just visited Cohoes, NY this afternoon. I really love that beautiful city and would like to add a photo of its city hall. Would you consider editing this photo for inclusion as a thumbnail in voy:cohoes?

Either way, thank you very much for taking so many photos of Upstate New York!

By the way, I also visited Waterford, NY, and I think that even though it's less spectacular than Cohoes, it merits a Wikivoyage article, as it has a nice historic district, the canal is interesting (I saw a lock operated early this afternoon), and I visited a noteworthy vintage items store at the corner of 3rd and Broad and the nice coffee shop with all sorts of interesting maritime artifacts and memorabilia on the walls that's catty-corner from there. I probably won't start a voy:Waterford (New York) article tonight, but soon, and if you have things to add about that town, great. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:05, 27 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

New try[edit]

I was able to give my little juniper project a new try today following your advice. Found a part of the bush with better background and even cheated by using a tripod. Unfortunately the light is already waning and even though I shot it at approximately the same hour as the first, I'm not sure it is enough for any higher marks. These little buggers really need some quality light to look their best, tiny as they are (the smallest ones just about 1 mm). But I'll get them some day! :) cart-Talk 22:21, 8 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You got some of them, but I still see a few. For example, there's a small one above a notch in the rocks some ways down from the upper left corner, I've counted 4 in the cloud near the upper right corner, and there's one just above the left side of the tors. I think there are others, but they're very light, so it's not that easy to find them. I'm promoting this, but try to find the others. -- Ikan Kekek 07:30, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Moved[edit]

Hi Daniel, I had no idea you were planning to upload the processing I made of your photo. I thought you only wanted my opinion on how it could have looked if I fixed it. Anyway, I moved it to a more neutral name since an editor's name don't belong in the title, that should only be in the description of the file's page. In this case it could also be bewildering for the viewer since they might be looking for a cart in the photo when using the search box to find photos. --cart-Talk 09:32, 18 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

FPC showing animal camouflage not wowing?[edit]

Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Panthera uncia - Zoo Karlsruhe 02.jpg

not quite my perfect example, but at least it's FP ;)

Hi, I'd like to talk some more words with you about your opinion that animals blending into the background provides no wow for you personally on principle. I totally respect it, but I struggle to understand that in theory, for you, there would be no wow factor in any FPC showing animal camouflage, regardless of the novelty and interest such photographs can have (at least for me). I still would love to know from you whether you would oppose a FPC showing animals in their natural environment, perfectly obscured by camouflage alone. Let's say, the whole photo shows just desert with grass, but only on closer view you could find a dozen animals hidden in plain sight, not obscured by other objects. (I call this the "Where's Wally?" photo) Would you still oppose this? I can't and likely won't change your view on photography, but I wanted to give you imaginary examples of where I find your principle that lack of subject separation is automatically lack of wow for you too close-minded and seeming absurd considering the unique effect I think these photos can have on the viewer (and thus wowing), when seeing them in the FP gallery, wondering what is so special about a boring nature scene, but then fining the animals all well hidden from predators. Thanks in advance for your thoughts! – LucasT 07:54, 8 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Lucasbosch: There was one nomination a while back where I thought this actually made the picture more interesting ... I shall have to find it, and I would rather do that later since it is very late here. Daniel Case (talk) 08:02, 8 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I look forward to it. I understand that not all of these images are awesome, but you worded it in a way that made it sound definitive and that's what irked me – LucasT 08:03, 8 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Reminder: Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2016 is open![edit]

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2016 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Daniel Case,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eleventh edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.

Buildings in[edit]

Hey Don,

While your work is altogether really stellar, I'm really not sure if so many entities should be placed in "Buildings in..." categories. For example, entities like the FDR complex and the CIA, both in Hyde Park, are inherently more than just a building or a collection of buildings, which is why people won't go to that section to look for things like what colleges and attractions are in the area. Maybe it should be in "Buildings in..." if it was also in another Hyde Park subcat, but otherwise it should definitely at least be in the Hyde Park cat. I think the same could go for notable/key structures like the town hall and post office/library, where people will think it would be in a much more prominent/relevant cat. ɱ (talk) 23:03, 24 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Haha, I really did not think it was worthy of the title, but it was nice to run across your photo, (smile) Thank you for the vote and cat help on Astor. That yacht just finished a 15 year sail around the world.. Have a great day, Cheers. --Don (talk) 15:29, 25 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Nominated photo question[edit]

Hi, recently I've nominated one of my photos for Commons's featurd picture which is Bangladeshi Young Girl. In that nomination, you asked a question about the stand-in of that girl on active rail. Yes. She is standing on the active rail. Thank you.

Time[edit]

Summersky around midnight in Lysekil

We have daylight savings time here in Sweden right now and my camera recognize that. So technically, the silage and tractors photo was taken an hour earlier (7:10 pm) if you go by astronomical time. So not that late. ;) Since I was up late last night, I snapped this photo for you from my window to show what "real" midnight looks like at the moment. If the weather is fine on summer solstice a week or so from now, I'll see if I can go out and take a proper midnight photo that day. --cart-Talk 09:36, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

User:W.carter I was in Trondheim, Norway in the summer once. The sun only set for about an hour and even then it wasn't totally below the horizon. It was eerie being up at 11pm and being in broad daylight. PumpkinSky talk 11:09, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@PumpkinSky: It depends on what you are used to. For me it is eerie and strange to have dark nights when it's warm outside. Feels strange every time I travel south. :) Sorry for loitering on your talk page, Daniel. --cart-Talk 11:13, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Summer sky at 12:45 a.m. in Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada
@W.carter: You can loiter on my talk page all you want . That picture is what 9:30 p.m. looks like around here at the moment (and yes, we're on daylight savings/summer time as well). We have only five hours of real, sun-more-than-18º-below-the-horizon night this time of year.

@PumpkinSky: I've been further north than Trondheim. That's 12:45 a.m. in Inuvik, the largest town in the Canadian Arctic (or, OK, just to the south of Inuvik). After that picture, we went whitewater rafting and camping under that continuous sun in Ivvavik National Park for two weeks. Based on that experience, you can get used to it (but if you're in a tent with translucent white walls best to use a sleep mask ... sometimes even this time of year if I'm sleeping in it's a good thing too), although it doesn't stop being cool. Daniel Case (talk) 15:15, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That's quite interesting. I hear the mosquitos up there in the summer are really bad too. Trondheim is the furthest north I've been on land but I've been up past the northern tip of Norway on ships.PumpkinSky talk 15:21, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@PumpkinSky: You have heard correctly about the mosquitoes. I'm sure if they had a mosquito Olympics, the North American Arctic team would easily kick the Florida team's ass (or whatever the appropriate body part would be), and then based on what I've heard they would in turn find themselves being used to mop up the floor by the Siberian team. https://www.flickr.com/photos/133250546@N06/21261774219/in/pool-2881294@N22/ Here's a photo of me, from the nose up, under attack one "evening"].

Ironically, that was the last day of the trip where they were really a problem ... that had been a day with 80-degree temperatures (Yes! 200 miles above the Arctic Circle—I actually took my only swim (such as it was) in the Firth that day), and within a day or two, it got considerably cooler (more like late September in the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic USA) and as such the mosquitoes slowly reduced their presence to the point that well before we reached the Beaufort Sea they were happily a memory.

While looking at that photo may make you start to involuntarily scratch, shake and swat randomly, I was actually not getting bitten much thanks to the 30% DEET repellent I was wearing, which is pretty much de rigeur if you are outside and away from any large human settlement (i.e., downtown Inuvik) in that part of the world at that time of year. The Tilley hat and sunglasses are also being worn partly for defensive purposes.

You don't have to go far north in the US to experience really late sunsets this time of year. I remember a few years ago being in South Bend, IN, about as far west as you can get in the Eastern Time Zone, during early July, and feeling a little anxious as the sun stayed above the horizon until almost 9 p.m., a half-hour later than it does around here at its latest (anxious because I thought we had strayed into Central Time without realizing it). Apparently at the solstice that city enjoys sunsets at 9:22 p.m.. And if you go farther north but still stay on Eastern Time, to Marquette, MI, you can at the solstice enjoy a 9:46 p.m. sunset and astronomical twilight that persists until after midnight (making it theoretically possible to duplicate cart's picture above).

International Falls, MN and Bellingham, WA don't have sunsets quite so late ... but they do have dark-gray nights where it only gets to astronomical twilight, so if you look north at midnight or so you can see that bluish glow on the horizon and maybe even some reflected sunlight or dusk on a cloud near it if the angle is right. That little strip south of the western Canadian border is about the only place in the continental US where you can experience this sort of not-quite-night. You declined my photo File:Strassburg_Ansicht_mit_Bischofsburg_Loreto-Kapelle_und_Stadtpfarrkirche_27032017_7168.jpg in the FPC due to the bothering crop at the bottom. I admit that it is not satisfying indeed.
My alternative offer to that FP candidate is this photo from the same camera position, but with a different crop: File:Strassburg Ansicht mit Bischofsburg Loreto-Kapelle und Stadtpfarrkirche 27032017 7164.jpg Please, have a look at it and tell me, if this one might fit better than the nominated. Trichoglottis background[edit]

Hey there,

Thanks for your comment at Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Dark purple Trichoglottis (70213s)c.jpg. I went ahead and withdrew that nomination, but spent a little time trying to play with the background to try to make it less distracting. Originally nominated version, new version. Do you think it's worth renominating the new one, or still too distracting? Thanks. — Rhododendrites talk02:50, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Good morning Daniel,[edit]

Thank you for your next comment: I sort of see what you were seeing, and I love the texture, but on the whole it just doesn't feel like an FP for me. Some of the closeups in the annotations might have a chance, though. Daniel Case (Overleg)
What close up did you have in mind for any FP? Thank you in advance for your reply. Sincerely, Dominicus Bergsma.--Famberhorst (talk) 06:37, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Xmas lights[edit]

Hey Daniel,

Checking in about what you foresee as a timeline for nominating the Christmas lights photos for deletion. I'd like to see it happen sooner rather than later, since as I said over at the fpc I'm not really psyched about the idea of a bunch of pictures in limbo, opposed at FPC because they might be nominated someday and there might be support for deleting. I can nominate one of my own as a test case, even. Based on all of the past threads I could find, and the handful of responses I solicited, my hunch is there will not be support for deletion, however (this was part of my decision to upload them to begin with). — Rhododendrites talk05:37, 17 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

File:Fowl cages at wet market in Shenzhen, China.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Re round objects at FPC[edit]

First of all LOL!! When I lived in Visby, I was once asked (in the middle of town) by a couple of American tourists: "You're supposed to have this old wall here, where is it?" I could only reply: "It's called the Visby City Wall, walk in any direction until you bump into it. They thought I was joking and that I was only being rude to tourists! --Cart (talk) 18:46, 30 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@W.carter: The first time I visited Berlin, in 1988, what was then West Berlin was, of course, enclosed by a wall. That first night I was determined to see it for myself. So I walked out of our hotel, along the Ku'damm, and then figured that whatever way I walked I'd hit it at some point.

And believe it or not I did ... no, this isn't a story where I spend all night walking in the wrong direction; I actually got there within an hour, although looking at the map I'm not sure if I did it on foot or via the U-bahn. Probably the latter, but whatever way I went I went up a disused block of Wilhelmstrasse, noticed that just ahead there was a point where a dark line slashed across the street and the street lights resumed some distance beyond it. I had, indeed, found the wall just by striking out toward it. Daniel Case (talk) 06:06, 31 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Your QI candidates just withdrawn[edit]

Hi Daniel,

just read that you withdrew your images from Cape Town on the QI candidates page. If you have raw files, I think there is a good chance to make QI images from them. The dust problem on the sensor might be a bit annoying. But in the sky it can be fixed easily. If I can help you with finding good raw processing parameters, just provide an example raw image. (Is there any space to exchange temporary files just for QI-related discussion?)

Best regards, --JRff (talk) 21:50, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Johannes Robalotoff: I'm actually working on this right now. Daniel Case (talk) 21:55, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I will make the same offer to U, if you overhand an DNG-file, I will check it out from my side. A new development is still the view from foreign eyes, but I really not understand what happened in your ACR (digital darkroom). I believe some settings are overdosed... The keywords for the main technical issues are "bevels", "edge enhancement", "edge sharpening", german words "Kantenbruch" or "Kantenumsetzung" hope we will find the correct parameter to fix it. I need DNG for keep it objective (new version 11.1 since End of last year) DNG included data from your equipment (lens AND sensor, ok dust too ;-). I have a wishlist
1) Lion's_Head_from_Signal_Hill_in_winter_morning_light
2) Lion's Head from the slopes of Table Mountain
- I will not make a pledge if I have time this week, but I will do it. Only issue is transfer-space, maybee Google-Drive. I overhand psd-files with different layers (will be big size). I don´t know a better way to show different ways of PS-Work around. Ohren hoch, ist noch kein Meister vom Himmel gefallenǃ ;-) RE-gards&Saludos, Hans-Jürgen --Hans-Jürgen Neubert 07:32, 7 January 2019 (UTC)

@Hans-Jürgen Neubert: My raw files are .NEF (Nikon's format) Can you work with those? Daniel Case (talk) 07:40, 7 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Daniel Case: ː Daniel, I AM NIKON, too and I know your sensor. Sometimes it´s better to convert it with your own machine, to get additional exif from lens. I can work with NEF but feel free to check out DNG (digital negative) from adobe. It´s free and real basis. Sorry for writing the wiki-articel about ACR only in german, have to translate it one day. See "https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Camera_Raw" embedded articles from adobe are english, see "http://wwwimages.adobe.com/www.adobe.com/content/dam/acom/en/products/photoshop/pdfs/understanding_digitalrawcapture.pdf" the download you will find at the wiki-page, too (Version 11.1) I updated the urls today... Regards, --Hans-Jürgen Neubert 12:47, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
@Hans-Jürgen Neubert: I could export them as .DNGs if you'd like. Daniel Case (talk) 18:57, 7 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yuup, besser ist dasǃ Do it pls--Hans-Jürgen Neubert 19:23, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
@Hans-Jürgen Neubert: Es könnte etwas schwieriger sein, als ich dachte. Actually, I just checked and discovered that option isn't available (My guess is that there are some proprietary features in the .NEF format (Nikon, as you probably know, has that Capture software that it markets with some features exclusive to it; I guess that's what it is) that couldn't be stripped out without seriously damaging the file.

But let me see about downloading and using this. Daniel Case (talk) 19:38, 7 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Keep calm, old Dudeǃ Listen some old rock (for example Atomic Rooster, [Made in England], Time take my Life) or [Vivaldi, Stooges, just what u need] and don´t get stressed. A NEF is the origin ("Mutter") file format. DNG is open source and free minded (which vary from one raw converter to another) it is generating a doublette, doesn´t make only one change in your origin RAW-file. Btw I like Nikon, but I hate the creepy software. Capture is a mass (bullshit). For example WLAN is still a battery-war and they don´t fixed GPS with professional bodys. With the tablet solution it´s easy to fix geodata. My gps-mouse have costs about more then 300€ and it´s shity slow and NOT exact (grrrr)... get your own experienceǃ Saludos, Hans-Jürgen
@Hans-Jürgen Neubert: Alright, I have converted about seven of the raw files that I used to .DNGs. Would you like me to put them somewhere in the cloud where you can get them? I have some options available to me, but if you would prefer some space of your own choice, let me know where.

By the way I took my camera to a shop to have the sensor cleaned. They were only able to blow out the dust, however, as some of the marks are from metal shards and they did not feel comfortable wiping them off because they could scratch the sensor. At least they didn't charge for what they could do.

As for the shards, they said to ask Nikon, so I'm waiting for an email back from them.

This might mean it's time to start using, at least for a while, the D800 I took these pictures with (Yes, it's newer but you know, you get used to the camera you've been using for a few years and you don't just give up on it ). Daniel Case (talk) 06:48, 9 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Daniel Case: Hello Daniel, it´s up to you. The two Lion-Head I will work out you can send by mail (see my commons page for adress). I will upload the psd-files at my google drive for sharing. You can start with your space to. Never mindǃ--Hans-Jürgen Neubert 10:35, 9 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
First Lion´s Head you can download here (psd-file) https://drive.google.com/open?id=1gST1ri7xJVqsf-Sl3c4PeYZfXplZb0jd I only do not understand why Dxo can´t read exif from your jpeg and DNG?? Need NEF, too. Sorry for bother. I documented ACR Settings in additional word, like a recipe. The Hipa-Layer shows a way of sharpening, it´s not a must, more a add. screw like a gearwheel. Nice weekend - --Hans-Jürgen Neubert 12:05, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

@Hans-Jürgen Neubert: I looked at it briefly. I will be away at a convention for the weekend, so I won't be able to send you the .NEF until Sunday. Daniel Case (talk) 14:23, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Automated categorization[edit]

Hi, Daniel. I’m contacting you because you described yourself as "a very active Commons categorizer". I’ve been doing a lot of categorizing of images in Category:Images from Cleveland Museum of Art and I can’t help but feel that almost everything I’m doing could be more efficiently and systematically done in an automated or at least semi-automated fashion. For all I know what I’m asking about is already possible (or because of some technical limitation is not possible), but I’m just not tuned-in enough to know, so forgive me if what I’m about ask seems clueless.

So, take as an example File:Alexandre Lunois - Interior of a Peasant's House, Valley of Bethmale, France - 1941.500 - Cleveland Museum of Art.jpg in Category:Lithographs in the Cleveland Museum of Art. What I envision is that a bot or a gadget could read the Artist field in the Artwork template and add the file to Category:Lithographs by Alexandre Lunois in the Cleveland Museum of Art, creating the category if doesn’t exist, and then remove the file from the supercategory. Ideally it would also add the file to Category:Lithographs by Alexandre Lunois, creating that category if it doesn’t exist, making it a subcategory of Category:Works by Alexandre Lunois or just Category:Alexandre Lunois—whatever the user specifies.

I mean, it would be even more ideal if that file were uncategorized and a tool could combine information from all the fields like Artist, Medium, Collection and Place of creation to could create/add additional categories like Category:Lithographs from France in the Cleveland Museum of Art, Category:19th-century lithographs in the Cleveland Museum of Art and the intersection category Category:19th-century lithographs from France in the Cleveland Museum of Art and add them to the appropriate supercategories.

Is this possible now and I just don’t know about it? Or is there some reason it’s not feasible? —Rrburke (talk) 00:09, 19 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Lucasbosch: Some people, myself included, use the exclamation point before "vote" on-wiki to acknowledge that sheer numbers are not the way we decide things (otherwise it would be too easy for people to just drive loopholes right through policy, even if inadvertently), that our expressions of favor or disfavor for something must also include, even if by reference, our reasons why or why not, since it is really about consensus rather than majority. See here for another statement about this. Daniel Case (talk) 18:25, 29 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Categorization is based (IMO) on anything significant in (or about) the picture, not just what the photographer wanted the subject to be[edit]

You undoed again and wrote in the edit summary: "Categorization is based (IMO) on anything significant in (or about) the picture, not just what the photographer wanted the subject to be." I think...on the contrary, we should not blindly add to files so that avoid adding too many unnecessary categories. We have to make sure that every category added to the file is useful. When I said "useful", I meant that they will choose File:台灣夏末的雲DSC 7026.jpg or File:View of Miaoli on Freeway 1.jpg as the subject of the composition(a white cloud), since the picture itself is sufficiently eye-catching.--Kai3952 (talk) 20:46, 26 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

FP-vote[edit]

Sorry but I don't really understand your reason here, I don't see a issue. First: The images is available under a free license here, and now on Flickr also. Second: the photo was never under a non-free license (all rights reserved is just a default choice if you forget to choice a license), even if I uploaded the photo on web page without any information the photo will still be "all rights reserved" since photos are protected by copyright. I have uploaded 1000s of photos under free licenses and I think it is a bit ridiculous to talk about a "right issue" here.--ArildV (talk) 18:45, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@ArildV: I didn't realized you had changed the license at Flickr ... it used to be so much harder. I have therefore changed my !vote. Daniel Case (talk) 18:56, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This file may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Bronze statue of Mao Zedong at National Museum of China.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Tracks are for Trains - What prompted the template?[edit]

As In the title, what prompted the template?

I think it's a good thing to do, I assume you are also aware of "Operation Lifesaver" in the US?

ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 13:44, 4 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@ShakespeareFan00: What prompted it was seeing an awful amount of pictures taken by people from on tracks. At around the same time, OLI was beginning a campaign to warn people against doing that for their social media feeds. I thought it was a good idea here, too, and we copied the wording of that campaign. Daniel Case (talk) 14:21, 4 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I will also mention that there has been some concern in the UK rail enthusiast press about 'vidiots' ( i.e people taking video on phones, photographers and so on being in unsafe positions.). This included a minority at enthusiast events, that should have known better. Do you plan on encouraging wider use of the message on other sites? My thought would be to try and get the 'Trainsim' community aware as well. In the early 2000's I encouraged a community of train-sim developers to put the message 'There's nothing Virtual about Serious injury! Real Trains Kill!' in banner ads on their sites along with appropriate commentary, but the original site that was the hub page of that campaign is no longer online sadly.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Yet another barnstar for you[edit]

Another Reviewer Barnstar
For your outstanding reviews on the FPC page. I have learned a lot from your comments on photographs, whether you praise or point out problems. Your hints on the composition, on the colours etc. hit the nail on the head and often make clear in a few words what I have somehow sensed but have not seen clearly. Your contributions therefore contribute a great deal to making the FPC page not (just) a competition for featured images, but a great place to learn. --Aristeas (talk) 15:29, 15 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

PS, to avoid misunderstandings: This is not (only) a ‘thank you’ for your last ‘support’ vote on one of my photos. Your comment has just reminded me that I have been wanting to thank you for a long time for all of your FPC comments, including any critical ones, so I finally did it ;–). --Aristeas (talk) 15:35, 15 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:NJT locomotive 4109 in CNJRR heritage livery at Port Jervis, NY.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Not addressed stitching issue in FP candidate[edit]

Hello Daniel, I hope you are doing well. I fixed the note you added in an FPC of mine some time ago. I couldn't take care of that earlier because I was retired. Thank you for that, there was indeed an issue there. Poco a poco (talk) 19:35, 14 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Photos of minors in open-crotch pants[edit]

You took the following photos:

These photos do not have {{Consent}} or {{Personality rights}} templates. Did you obtain consent? Brianjd (talk) 14:49, 20 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Brianjd: Thanks for the reminder—at the time I uploaded them we had barely started putting those tags on images. I put {{Consent}} tags on them with the "public" argument since they were both taken in public spaces. Since they're from behind and you can't see the subjects' faces, I didn't think {{Personality rights}} was necessary. Daniel Case (talk) 16:38, 20 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

FPX[edit]

IMHO the FPX brick is not meant to give the final kick to an already unsuccessful nomination. It’s the nominator’s choice to withdraw it any time. FPX is meant for freshly nominated images showing issues which cannot be tolerated on FPC – such as too small / unsharp / tilted / pixelpulp – to spare them an exhausting series of opposes. The image in question is not that bad at all, and wasn’t a clearly losing candidate from the beginning IMHO. "does not fall into our guidelines because it does not look likely to succeed" is a weird reason. --Kreuzschnabel 15:08, 11 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Village Dump[edit]

Just some information for you: My edit on w:wp:Village dump was an accident and I didn’t intend for vandalism, I just thought it would be a cool page, and had no knowledge of it being used by trolls, could you please unblock me? – Ilovemydoodle (talk) 22:37, 12 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

What's your enwiki account? When I search for one by this name there, it tells me that no account by that name exists. Daniel Case (talk) 19:21, 14 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Daniel Case: IP: 2603:7080:da3c:7a33::/64. – Ilovemydoodle (talk) 19:45, 14 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I looked at that range. Yes, I have blocked it for a rather long time. But there are other problematic edits from the IP besides the ones to "Village Dump" which make the case for an unblock a little more complicated.
You have edited Commons and other Foundation wikis productively under this username. How come you've never created an account at enwiki? I realize now that the block may be preventing that, but you've had the opportunity for a while. I mean, if you wanted to do that, it might be easier that way. Daniel Case (talk) 05:07, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well I only started really editing on other wikis after I was blocked (other than one time years ago I uploaded a photo). – Ilovemydoodle (talk) 05:13, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Daniel Case: Could you please respond? – Ilovemydoodle (talk) 23:19, 17 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'm going to be a little busy at real-world work through the end of the month but I can at least start here.
Is that one edit to the "Village Dump" page the only one you made from that range? There are other edits that led to the block. Daniel Case (talk) 03:47, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I know of every edit under that range was made by me, but at the time I didn't really understand the system, now I am much more experienced. – Ilovemydoodle (talk) 05:11, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also the reason I kept creating pages with new requests and questions is because of two reasons:
1) Since I was blocked from editing pages other than my Talk Page every time my IP changed I would have to create a new page.
2) At the time I didn't really understand why I was blocked, and wasn't really given a full explanation. – Ilovemydoodle (talk) 05:14, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also, next time you respond, can you please ping me? – Ilovemydoodle (talk) 05:21, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ilovemydoodle: Sure (I actually thought this new system does it automatically, so I haven't done it as much) Daniel Case (talk) 05:22, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also, can you reply to my other answers? – Ilovemydoodle (talk) 05:25, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ilovemydoodle: I read them; I understand. I am thinking of talking to the admin who made the original block to see what he thinks. I would answer at some length but it's getting late by US Eastern time and I have to get up early for work tomorrow and I want to get some other things done before bed). Daniel Case (talk) 05:29, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Just so you know: I also live in upstate New York. Also, could you talk to him? (there are some edits I have been waiting a long time to make) – Ilovemydoodle (talk) 05:31, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ilovemydoodle: Sure; probably not till tomorrow (i.e., much later today) though. Daniel Case (talk) 05:34, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Also, if a blocked user has a dynamic IP, what are they meant to do about their Talk Page? – Ilovemydoodle (talk) 05:36, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ilovemydoodle: That's why it's easier in those situations to have an account. I wish we could create talk pages for ranges, but they'd be treated as regular user account talk pages and thus the blocked IPs could not use them.

Since we've been more willing to block /64 ranges of late, since ISPs give them out more with the idea that a single user will be assigned them, that is an issue we should address (but it's beyond my pay grade, unfortunately). Daniel Case (talk) 05:43, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Well, maybe you could submit a phab request? – Ilovemydoodle (talk) 05:55, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ilovemydoodle: Yeah, or just suggest the idea on ... Village Pump! Daniel Case (talk) 06:04, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
On which wiki? – Ilovemydoodle (talk) 06:05, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ilovemydoodle: Enwiki, since that's where we are having the issue so far. Discussions there IME seem to get more people interested in doing something to change it. Daniel Case (talk) 06:08, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, how am I meant to start a discussion if I am blocked? – Ilovemydoodle (talk) 06:12, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I meant that I would do it ... as an admin who has blocked a lot of people, I'd like to think my opinion would carry some weight. But of course if you can join in you should, and I won't be starting that discussion just yet.
(I'm sorry I wasn't able to respond yesterday ... my workday was longer than expected, I didn't get much sleep beforehand and then of course the weather was unseasonably cool. I finally got home, ate a belated dinner, watched TV with my wife and then I just couldn't stay awake any more (especially since I had to get up earlier again. @69.206.44.221: I was there that day; I still very much remember taking that image with the camera credited in the metadata. I do not remember anyone else being there, save my son sitting in my nearby parked car. It isn't perfect; I wish the sun had not been where it was, but it depicts the lake and that's what counts.
I do not not understand why you insist you took that image ... it has always existed in purely digital form (I don't have the original memory card anymore; there was no print original). Perhaps you took one that seems very similar? I assure you then it is a coincidence. I'd be interested in seeing it.
I note that your IP resolves to the Kingston area ... perhaps you can email me via the link on my user page? This is not the best way to discuss this. Daniel Case (talk) 06:25, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Daniel! Thanks for your edits on File:Fossil-Mammutbaum-Miozän-Naturmuseum-Dortmund.jpg. I have made the description more precise: the original location of the fossil was Oregon, USA. The petrified wood is currently exposed in a museum in Germany (where also my photo was taken). Question: I thought that Category:Petrified wood in the United States refers to the orginal location of the fossil and not to the place where the fossil in currently expsosed. Thus I think Category:Petrified wood in the United States is still correct. What do you think? --Tuxyso (talk) 20:50, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe it should be "petrified wood from the United States". "In", to me, in English, means "physically within" in that sense, at the time the photo was taken.
A lot of our art-location categories would benefit from this, as we have many photos of artworks from one country exhibited in another. Daniel Case (talk) 22:01, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Radomianin: Thank you very much! I'm sure you're wondering where I've been from FAC the last couple of months; I've been a) getting over computer problems, b) focusing on articles I've been working on for a while and c) distracted by the extra administrative work created by the Israel-Hamas war. But I do intend to get back to FAC soon ... I miss it! Meanwhile, very happy end-of-year holidays to you! Our time in Singapore was very well spent! Take your time and when you return to FPC you will be welcomed with open arms. Yes, the Wikimania in Singapore was a great experience and our personal conversations are among my highlights. It was a real pity that I could only be there for a few days because of my work. Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones! See you soon :) -- Radomianin (talk) 08:35, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A picture of the creator[edit]

Good day, sir. I hope you are well. Is it possible for you to put a picture of the actual creator of "The Griddy" dance on the Wikipedia page? If not, then can you please provide a reason as to why it can't be done? Thank you in advance for your consideration. 2603:8001:C501:122:B2A4:ED28:65A5:79FD 00:27, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
