תמצית קצרה: זהו מכתב פתוח לקרן ויקימדיה. אנחנו מבקשים מקרן ויקימדיה להשקיע בוויקישיתוף ולחשוב בגדול: אנחנו לא צריכים רק עוד כמה כלים או תכונות, אלא פלפורמה מודרנית לטווח הארוך.

לכבוד קרן ויקימדיה,

אנו, החתומים מטה, מעורבים בוויקשיתוף, פלטפורמת המדיה המרכזית של תנועת ויקימדיה. ויקישיתוף הוא המקום שבו התנועה מתאחדת: אנו מצלמים תמונות, מעלים קבצים, מצרפים תמונות בערכי ויקיפדיה, עוסקים בשאלות משפטיות, מלמדים אחרים כיצד להשתמש בוויקישיתוף, עובדים עם מוסדות תרבות (GLAM), או תומכים בוויקישיתוף בדרכים אחרות.

ויקישיתוף הוא אחד מאוספי המדיה המקוונים הגדולים בעולם. הוא מציע קבצים ברישיונות חופשיים לכולם: דרך ויקיפדיה ושאר מיזמי ויקימדיה, וגם דרך הרבה אתרים וגורמים אחרים בעולם. מה שהופך את ויקישיתוף חיוני למיליוני אנשים על הגלובוס.

אך אנו מודאגים בנוגע למצב הנוכחי ולעתיד של ויקישיתוף. הפלטפורמה שלנו נאבקת להישאר רלוונטית בעולם שנשלט בידי פלטפורמות חזותיות (כגון יוטיוב, אינסטגרם, פליקר וכו') שמתפתחות באופן תמידי. ויקישיתוף, לעומתם, נכשל בסטנדרטים מודרניים של יכולת שימוש, ונאבק עם מספר נושאים יסודיים. תורמים חדשים מתקשים להצטרף, בעוד עבור תורמים קיימים זה מתסכל להעלות, לאצור, לחפש, ולהשתמש בתוכן בשנית.[1]

אנו מבינים שקרן ויקימדיה הודתה כי "לא הייתה אחריות רשמית על תשתית המולטימדיה הליבתית של ויקישיתוף, שזקוקה נואשות לשיפוץ" בתוכנית השנתית האחרונה.[2] אנו מעודדים גם את ההמלצה של Strategy 2030 לשפר את חוויית המשתמשים בפלטפורמות שלנו.[3] אף על פי שזה מעודד, אנחנו רוצים לזהות צרכים מיידיים ולחשוב בגדול על העתיד של ויקישיתוף.

בין דאגותינו נמצאות:

  • ויקישיתוף יכול להיות סביבה לא נוחה למשתמשים חדשים, שצריכים ללמוד המון במטרה לתרום באופן משמעותי.[4][5] בהשוואה לאתרי צלמים אחרים, זהו לא אתר אטרקטיבי במיוחד.
  • ויקישיתוף דורש ידע טוב באנגלית, למרות שהוא שואף להיות פלטפורמה רב־לשונית.[6]
  • ויקישיתוף הוא קשה לשימוש בתצוגת ניידים (mobile).[7][8]
  • לוויקישיתוף יש בעיות עם העלאה מרובה של קבצים.[9]
  • לוויקישיתוף חסרות שיטות מודרניות לאינטראקציות קהילתיות, כגון התראות או השארת פידבק למשתמשים.[10]
  • ויקישיתוף סובל מהיעדר פיתוח בסט תכונות הליבה שלו. כלים שנכתבו על ידי מתנדבים סייעו ליצירת חידושים ופונקציונליות חדשים, אך קשה לתחזק את אותם הכלים.

מצד אחד, אנו מברכים מאוד על פתרונות מהירים לבעיות הדחופות ביותר, כגון העלאת תוכן. מצד שני, אנו מאמינים שהשיפור של ויקישיתוף אינו רק בעיית תוכנה: עלינו לקיים דיון רחב כדי לגלות איזו פלטפורמה בת קיימא אנחנו צריכים בעתיד, עבור חוויית משתמש טובה יותר, לתיאום טוב יותר בפלטפורמה ולצרכים של כל מי שפועל למען ידע חופשי.

אנחנו צריכים גם חקירה מעמיקה לגבי הטווח הארוך: אולי תוכנת מדיה ויקי שעובדת בוויקישתוף היא לא הדרך הטובה ביותר לעבודה עם קבצי מדיה.

For instance as one of the largest contributors of the images to project I struggle to apply and teach correct categorization, but after all categories are totally invisible to mobile users. I receive every week emails and messages from people all over the world asking for "similar images", "higher resolution" or info that could be easily found in the categories or in the general layout of the files.   323. Contributing to Wikicommons is a great way of destroying the enthusiasm of new and existing supporters. If the site had a personality then it would be a person determined to make sure that the number of problems exceeded the number of photos. Photos that are "not for commercial use" are all over commercial sites like google, facebook and twitter but our non-commercial site cannot unpick the legal barriers that others steam roller over. I use SDoC, which is a really good innovation. I'm interested in content issues such as accuracy of map metadata, and the changing of titles (comes up in heraldry). I see improvements in documentation that would be helpful. While I myself have not experienced problems at the level of the community, I think some discussion of the place of bot operators would be a good idea.[reply]

  456. Commons is definitely long over due for some updates. The limited support for file formats and difficulty using it on mobile devices are two major issues. Uploading also use improvement. Uploading singles files or doing bulk uploads are both needlessly obtuse and often take more effort then it's worth. Especially when it comes to doing bulk uploading.   459. I've been a Wikipedian since 2005, and on Commons basically since it started. After reading the list of grievances in this letter, I feel strongly that, in hindsight, the decision to base this platform on a wiki was a bad idea. It sounds like we need to throw that out and adopt something more similar to Flickr and other modern websites. It probably needs a standalone app too. As far as communications and notifications go, I still don't understand why the Foundation developed Flow but then coward from implementing it on the major existing wikis (Commons, Wikipedia, Wiktionary, etc.).
