Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Ad: File:Mating of Firebug Pyrrhocoris apterus WLB DSC 0059.jpg

Hey, you added Category:Pyrrhocoris apterus to this file and therefore its name was changed, but it's not that species. P. apterus has other colouration pattern, wider body shape and is brachypterous. And its probably not even from family Pyrrhocoridae or superfamily Pyrrhocoroidea because they have 2 basal cells on membrane, from which 7-8 branching longitudinal veins extend to the apical margin. •  Comment I have previously gave an explanation to you in this respect of subspecies categorization [image candidates/Close wing position of Euploea radamanthus Fabricius, 1793 - Magpie crow WLB.jpg]. Further more I am gladly explaining once more that all our subspecies categorization are done under the active guidance of the highest level butterfly experts and lepidopterist of the country. Moreover, we have a tremendous work pressure in dealing with our vast project [Loves Butterfly] Part-II on proper scientific basis, there it is most usually not getting possible for us presently to categorize others pictures on subspecies level. Furthermore, as I have looked through in the parent category of this the majority of the pictures there do not have both ventral and dorsal view of the similar species at the same time in the similar place and the species name even the location of the picture taken etc. are not mentioned, excepting which all no butterfly experts will classify them and not possible doing such at the same time. You have not however responded to my request that you do not create sub-species categrories unless you follow the Wikimedia guidelines for creating a new category: "Creating a new category... Find images (or a gallery or other pages) which should be put in the new category." If you do not wish to invest the time in moving images to a new sub-species category, then don't create one. Also we should not promote an inferior image when there may be many better images available even though they may not have exact location defined. The role of VI is to give references for illustrations. We are fortunate that a competent team ranks the different subspecies and ranks them in different categories. Their work is remarkable for the quality of the illustrations and their seriousness. I understand what you are saying, but those who nominate images must try to be accurate in the identification and description and make it easy for us to judge which image is most valuable. The work done here is very sloppy and is not helping the project at all. This user has placed dorsal images of two very different forms in the new sub-species gallery he created - form clytia and form dissimilis. This may demonstrate a lack of specialist knowledge. He has not made it easy for us to compare his nomination with other such as Jee's image File:Papilio clytia at Kadavoor.jpg in the main gallery. I have not got time to go through every image of his nominations. It is the duty of the nominator to do that and establish trust with the rest of the community. I remember, @Atudu: has stated this before in one of her VI nomination, that her team experts couldn't help in this regard because of high chance of false identification. The proposer has explained her point several times. It is beyond my understanding, why the same point has to be explained again and again. Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

• To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
• To perform file name swaps.
• When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Commons Photographers User Group: Meeting on September 26 and other stuff

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I've got a quick update for you, containing three items:

• I’d like to invite you to our group’s second Virtual Meeting on Saturday, September 26, 2020. As last time, this meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic. If you'd like to present, please add your name and the proposed topic to the list on the talk page.
• Also, I'd like to start a conversation about how we should be sharing responsibility for the user group going forward. I'd love to get some help when it comes to organizing things and I'm convinced that we can achieve more if a couple of people helped with coordinating stuff.
• Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has asked me to spread the word about their latest survey: Universal Code of Conduct Survey. The goal is to create a safer environment on Wikimedia projects and the Foundation gathers feedback prior to coming up with a first draft.

Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.

Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.

I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.

We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.

Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.

Share Your Struggle 2021 (15 - 31 August 2021) is a public photo competition on Wikimedia Commons. The goal of the project is to improve coverage of free usable media files related to various struggles, such as, natural disasters, health crises such as COVID-19 pandemic, social movements, conflict-torn areas, and any other humanitarian crises. The goal is not only to document crises, but also humanitarian efforts and acts of kindness that happen during such crises.

June Month Celebration 2022 edit-a-thon

Question from the CPUG Board

Dear user group member,

I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.

With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.

That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.

However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:

This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you

Dear fellow Commons photographer,

I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.

At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.
