Liebe Wikimedia Foundation,

Wir, die Unterzeichnenden, sind an Wikimedia Commons beteiligt, der zentralen Medienplattform der Wikimedia-Bewegung. Commons ist der Ort, an dem die Bewegung zusammenkommt: Wir machen Fotos, wir laden Dateien hoch, wir betten Bilder in Wikipedia-Artikel ein, wir befassen uns mit rechtlichen Fragen, wir bringen anderen bei, wie man Commons nutzt, wir arbeiten mit kulturellen Einrichtungen (GLAM) oder unterstützen Commons auf andere Weise.

Commons ist eine der größten Online-Mediensammlungen der Welt. Sie bietet allen Menschen frei-lizenzierte Dateien an: über Wikipedia und andere Wikimedia-Wikis und auch über viele andere Websites und Einzelpersonen in der Welt. Das macht Commons für Millionen von Menschen auf dem Planeten unverzichtbar.

Aber wir machen uns Sorgen über die gegenwärtige Situation und die Zukunft von Wikimedia Commons. Unsere Plattform kämpft, um in einer Welt relevant zu bleiben, die von visuellen Plattformen (wie YouTube, Instagram, Flickr usw.) dominiert wird, die sich ständig weiterentwickeln. Commons hingegen entspricht nicht den modernen Standards der Benutzerfreundlichkeit und hat mit zahlreichen grundlegenden Problemen zu kämpfen. Es ist schwierig für neue Beitragende, beizutreten, während es für bestehende Beitragende frustrierend ist, Inhalte hochzuladen, zu kuratieren, zu suchen und wiederzuverwenden.[1]

Wir sehen, dass die Wikimedia Foundation im jüngsten Jahresplan eingeräumt hat, dass "es keine formelle Zuständigkeit für die grundlegende Multimedia-Infrastruktur von Commons gegeben hat, die dringend einer Reparatur bedarf."[2] Uns ermutigt auch die Strategie-Empfehlung für 2030, dass die Benutzererfahrung auf unseren Plattformen verbessert werden soll.[3] Auch wenn das ermutigend ist, so wollen wir dringenden Bedarf identifizieren und in großen Dimensionen denken ("think big"), wenn es um die Zukunft von Commons geht.

Zu unseren Sorgen gehört:

  • Commons kann eine unkomfortable Umgebung für neue Benutzer sein, die viel lernen müssen, um auf sinnvolle Weise beitragen zu können.[4][5] Verglichen mit anderen Websites für Fotografen ist es keine sehr attraktive Site.
  • Commons erfordert ein gutes Verständnis der englischen Sprache, obgleich es eine vielsprachige Plattform sein will.[6]
  • Commons ist für mobile Anwender schwierig zu nutzen.[7][8]
  • Commons hat Probleme mit der Skalierbarkeit, da es sich schwer tut, Massen-Uploads oder große Mengen an Dateien zu verarbeiten.[9]
  • Commons fehlt es an modernen Methoden für Community-Interaktionen, wie z. B. Benachrichtigungen oder das Hinterlassen von Feedback für Benutzer.[10]
  • Bei Commons mangelt es an der Weiterentwicklung der Kernfunktionen. Von Ehrenamtlichen geschriebene Tools haben zu neuen Innovationen und Funktionen beigetragen, aber es ist schwierig, diese Tools dauerhaft in Schuss zu halten.
  • Commons unterstützt nur wenige Dateiformate.[11][12][13]
  • Commons fehlt es an der Unterstützung von Video-Inhalten, die über einfaches Abspielen hinausgeht, wie etwa kollaboratives Bearbeiten und Erstellen.

Einerseits begrüßen wir schnelle Lösungen für die dringendsten Probleme wie das Hochladen von Inhalten. Andererseits glauben wir, dass die Verbesserung von Commons nicht einfach nur ein Softwareproblem ist: Wir sollten eine breite Diskussion führen, um herauszufinden, welche Art von nachhaltiger Plattform wir in Zukunft brauchen, für eine bessere allgemeine Benutzererfahrung, für eine bessere Koordination auf der Plattform und für die Bedürfnisse aller, die für freies Wissen arbeiten.

Wir brauchen auch eine tiefgreifende Untersuchung zur langfristigen Zukunft: Vielleicht ist die MediaWiki-Software, so wie sie für Wikimedia Commons verwendet wird, nicht der beste Weg für die Arbeit mit Mediendateien.

Mit diesem offenen Brief wollen wir betonen, wie wichtig Commons für die Communitys ist. Gemeinsam mit den Gemeinschaften kann und muss die Wikimedia Foundation etwas bewirken. Wir brennen darauf, mit einem engagierten Team an einem Entwicklungsplan und an Lösungen zu arbeiten.

For instance as one of the largest contributors of the images to project I struggle to apply and teach correct categorization, but after all categories are totally invisible to mobile users. I receive every week emails and messages from people all over the world asking for "similar images", "higher resolution" or info that could be easily found in the categories or in the general layout of the files. If the site had a personality then it would be a person determined to make sure that the number of problems exceeded the number of photos. Photos that are "not for commercial use" are all over commercial sites like google, facebook and twitter but our non-commercial site cannot unpick the legal barriers that others steam roller over. I use SDoC, which is a really good innovation. I'm interested in content issues such as accuracy of map metadata, and the changing of titles (comes up in heraldry). I see improvements in documentation that would be helpful. While I myself have not experienced problems at the level of the community, I think some discussion of the place of bot operators would be a good idea.[reply]

  456. Commons is definitely long over due for some updates. The limited support for file formats and difficulty using it on mobile devices are two major issues. Uploading also use improvement. Uploading singles files or doing bulk uploads are both needlessly obtuse and often take more effort then it's worth. Especially when it comes to doing bulk uploading.   459. I've been a Wikipedian since 2005, and on Commons basically since it started. After reading the list of grievances in this letter, I feel strongly that, in hindsight, the decision to base this platform on a wiki was a bad idea. It sounds like we need to throw that out and adopt something more similar to Flickr and other modern websites. It probably needs a standalone app too. As far as communications and notifications go, I still don't understand why the Foundation developed Flow but then coward from implementing it on the major existing wikis (Commons, Wikipedia, Wiktionary, etc.).
