2 images to upload?

Dear Christian,

If you wish to upload 2 images from MO, this image or this image would be a good choice for this category below...which has low quality images. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 21:22, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

✓ Done @Leoboudv: Just curious why do you want that I upload the images, and why don't you do it? Christian Ferrer (talk) 19:29, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
  •  Comment: I just thought that I should NOT be the one to upload so many quality images from M.O. almost all the time. (Its not right) A second uploader is always preferable. This is my last request about you uploading any images from M.O. although you can upload them yourself if you wish. Thank You Christian and the images are reviewed. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 20:24, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
That's sometimes fully all my life. Someone said one day "to be or not to be", I could go even further, and say to be alone or not to be alone, and by extension be alone to do something, or not. A dilemma if ever there is one. Christian Ferrer (talk) 21:03, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
  • That is quite right. Many year ago, the flickr bot would break down and I found myself reviewing hundreds of images per day. (I have slowed down now) So, I would leave messages at the Admin noticeboard asking if a second reviewer could help deal with the flickr backlog because its not safe to get just one reviewer marking so many images. Once--I think in 2018--there was a DR against a youtube image I reviewed. I was asked to explain my review. The license had changed from CC BY 3.0 to ARR from the time I marked it. Luckily I found a second reviewer of just 1 image from that source YT account....and he said the other YT image was free when he reviewed it. Without a second reviewer, it would be just my word in that DR. That is why I feel a bit safer if there was a second reviewer or uploader of images sometimes. Sorry to disturb you. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 21:30, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
Yes I noticed this DR. You don't disturb me. I just wondered why you did not upload the 2 images yourself. Christian Ferrer (talk) 21:58, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

Happy New 2019
Pan de jamón and Hallaca are a typical Christmas dish of my country, and I would like to share it with you, wishing you the best year 2019.. I would like to give you this humble recognition. Happy year 2019 dear!!! Photographer 01:44, 3 January 2019 (UTC)

Is this image free? This image is linked to Gbif from the source but the rights holders is Yale Peabody Museum here: http://collections.peabody.yale.edu/search/Record/YPM-IZ-069832

Yale Peabody's copyright statement is that "the Yale Peabody Museum retains all rights, copyright and other proprietary rights in content found in its web services." Very tricky gbif source design. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 21:49, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

Note that all the other images that I have uploaded from their dataset are not anymore available, e.g. File:Leptosynapta tenuis (YPM IZ 031381).jpg, File:Bathyplotes (YPM IZ 055703).jpg, File:Arbacia punctulata (YPM IZ 031119).jpg, ect, ect... I hope they did not change their mind and that they will continue to freely license their image.... Christian Ferrer (talk) 22:22, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
I just sent an email to the technical contact for the dataset, I hope to have an answer. Christian Ferrer (talk) 22:42, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
  • No, I got an answer. There is no issues about the licenses, they confirmed that the images available in the dataset are CC0, as well as the other datas. This is a technical problem that comes from somewhere in their integrated publishing toolkit (IPT), the GBIF website is just a way to retrieve the IPT, a kind of copy. The images have also disappeared from their toolkit, and they have thanked me to have pointed that to them. They are going to investigate. Christian Ferrer (talk) 06:55, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
@Leoboudv: Just for your info, the issue has been identified, that was a code bug at the change of year, that will be corrected tomorrow or in the next few days, and the correction will be reflected a bit later in the GBIF, as soon as they updates the databases. File deleted

Hi. Can I ask you an explanation about the deletion of this file? It was public domain in Italy, because the author died more than 70 years ago (Gioacchino Luigi Mellucci died in 1942), so that I don't understand the reason for its deletion. Thank you very much--Parma1983 (talk) 23:52, 6 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi, in order that I can answer please give me a link or the name of the deleted file. Christian Ferrer (talk) 05:36, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
File:Urbanizzazione area-tomba Dante Alighieri, con Giulio Ulisse Arata,Ravenna.jpg--Parma1983 (talk) 14:11, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
You're right that the file is in Public Domain in Italy, but it was not in Public Domain in 1996, and the work have been published after 1923, therefore the copyright have been restored in the USA as per Commons:URAA-restored copyrights. If the info in the file is exact "date:11 April 1925", then the image will be in PD in the USA 95 year after, we can restore it in 2021. The image is already listed in Category:Undelete in 2021. Christian Ferrer (talk) 16:46, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, I didn't know that law.
I ask you a favor, considering that for the moment that image can't be be uploaded here on commons. Could you restore it in order to move it to it.wiki? There can be uploaded as PD-Italia without any problem. Thanks--Parma1983 (talk) 17:11, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
@Parma1983: that is done, let me know when it have been transfered Christian Ferrer (talk) 17:15, 7 January 2019 (UTC)

Dear Christian,

Please review these images below when you can.

  • File:The Honest Critique.jpg
  • @Yajushrao: in a talk page, the new messages must be written at the bottom of the page, not at the top. One file is a painting with an unclear copyright status, it is likely not acceptable here unless there is an evidence that it is in Public Domain, but the author, date, country have to be known in order to determine the copyright status. In the other file you write "source: email", for this one the copyright holder of the photo must send a permission to OTRS, where you can read how to do it. Christian Ferrer (talk) 05:51, 7 January 2019 (UTC)

Bonjour et merci pour vos remarques, Par contre je ne comprends pas la suppression de mon image que j'ai réalisé entièrement. Je souhaite donc la réintégrer sur la page. Structured Data - file captions coming this week (January 2019)

Hi all, following up on last month's announcement...

Multilingual file captions will be released this week, on either Wednesday, 9 November or Thursday, 10 November 2019. Captions are a feature to add short, translatable descriptions to files. Here's some links you might want to look follow before the release, if you haven't already:

  1. Read over the help page for using captions - I wrote the page on mediawiki.org because captions are available for any MediaWiki user, feel free to host/modify a copy of the page here on Commons.
  2. Test out using captions on Beta Commons.
  3. Leave feedback about the test on the captions test talk page, if you have anything you'd like to say prior to release.

Additionally, there will be an IRC office hour on Thursday, 10 January with the Structured Data team to talk about file captions, as well as anything else the community may be interested in. Date/time conversion, as well as a link to join, are on Meta.

Thanks for your time, I look forward to seeing those who can make it to the IRC office hour on Thursday. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 20:22, 7 January 2019 (UTC)

Captions in January

The previous message from today says captions will be released in November in the text. January is the correct month. My apologies for the potential confusion. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 20:43, 7 January 2019 (UTC)

Je reviens vers vous pour espérer un peu d'aide, étant nouveau ( et certainement pas très dégourdi ...)Je souhaite intégrer une image que j'ai crée de A à Z sur la page wiki de mon sujet d'étude. Or celle ci à été supprimer et je ne peu plus l’insérer dans mon wiki.   • Bonjour, vous ne pouvez pas télécharger ici ce que vous trouvez sur internet, à moins qu'il ny ai une license explicitement compatible. Voir com:scope et com:Licensing. C'est le même chose si vous prenez des éléments d’autres images que vous trouvez sur internet, par exemples des voitures, ordinateurs, ect, ect.. et que vous fabriquez une nouvelle image à partir de ces éléments. Cela s'appelle un travail dérivée, et donc dans ce cas il y a aussi des problèmes de copyrights, par exemple le nuage de cette image File:Cycle fonction radio cognitive.jpg bien que la couleur soit différente, est un dérivé du nuage que l'on peut voir ici, et aussi à d'autres endroits. COM:CRT/Canada: {{Cat see also}}

You restored the {{Cat see also}} link to Category:Canadian FOP cases in COM:CRT/Canada with this diff. I had replaced it with a simple link in the ==See also== section. See User talk:4nn1l2#Permission to translate. The question is whether it is practical to maintain versions of pages like Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Canada in two or more languages, English and French in this case. Creating translations that will not be maintained would be worse than useless. {{Cat see also}} is one of the minor things that need to be fixed. The bigger issues are whether the translation extension mark-up is too complex/fragile and whether we can track and fix outdated translations. You may want to comment at User talk:4nn1l2#Permission to translate. Thanks, Aymatth2 (talk) 13:23, 16 January 2019 (UTC)

  • Thank you for your maintenance work. I have no strong opinions about the relevance or about the need to use {{Cat see also}} or not. I did not know that my edit was a potential issue. I just want to have this kind of links ("Category:xxxx FOP cases") available easily, because when doing my administrator job it happens frequently that I close FoP relative DRs, and once the work is done, I put the DRs in the corresponding subcategories of the one which we talk about. If you prefer that next time I use something other than {{Cat see also}} so let me know. Regards, Christian Ferrer (talk) 17:58, 16 January 2019 (UTC)
    I prefer "See also Category:xxx FOP cases" because {{Cat see also}} sometimes gives bizarre translations in an inappropriate language, but it is a minor point. Do you have any thoughts on whether pages like this should be maintained in two languages? It seems logical to have COM:CRT/France maintained in French by French speakers, with a passive translation in English. But it may be difficult to keep the versions in sync, particularly in countries where we have few contributors. I am quite undecided. Thoughts? Aymatth2 (talk) 18:35, 16 January 2019 (UTC)
In fact I did not notice that the link was already given at the bottom of the page, I reverted my edit. I think that all those pages should be in English, because the pages have to be quickly and easily understood by all the administrators and by the other editors interested in maintenance work. If translations are available, so it is good, especially a version in the langage from the country of which we look for. But firstly in English IMO. Christian Ferrer (talk) 19:49, 16 January 2019 (UTC)
I fully agree that there must be an English version, and would like a local language version if practical, but would not want to start local language versions that become outdated and misleading. Thanks for the feedback. Aymatth2 (talk) 19:55, 16 January 2019 (UTC)

Christian Ferrer (talk) 18:34, 25 January 2019 (UTC)
Ah, me voilà rassuré...

SELECT ?item ?rankLabel ?cat_gorie_Commons WHERE {
  ?item (wdt:P171/wdt:P171*) wd:Q83483.
  ?item wdt:P105 ?rank.
  SERVICE wikibase:label { bd:serviceParam wikibase:language "[AUTO_LANGUAGE],en". }
  OPTIONAL { ?item wdt:P373 ?cat_gorie_Commons. }
  FILTER(EXISTS { ?item wdt:P105 wd:Q7432. })
  FILTER(EXISTS { ?item wdt:P373 ?null. })
}
ORDER BY ?rankLabel ?itemLabel

Try it!

Du travail !

Bonjour Christian,

Tu t'ennuies ? ;) Bon courage, FredD (talk) 15:14, 28 January 2019 (UTC)

Hello Once again I upload files from publicly accessible places that are laid out without any copyright and once again the file is deleted. Please explain how to upload files obtained on publicly accessible pages of various sites without copyright infringements, in order to be used to improve Wikipedia pages? For example: there is a famous football player. • Hello "publicly accessible" don't mean not mean that you can do what you want. Our most relevant policies can be read there : com:Licensing and com:Scope. To have the possibility to upload here an image, in order to improve Wikipedia page, this image must have an explicite free license, or you must only upload the photos taken by yourself. Image of Pete Demers

Hi there - I have tried to get a picture undeleted. It has been ridiculously frustrating and there is very little clarity. In fact, I've been bounced from editor to editor and the last editor whose page I was engaged with closed edits, to basically shut me down. I have no idea why my proposed content has been so brutally penalized. I have full permission to use the image, I have ownership of the image, and I have permission to use the contents of the pictured plaque. The image was voted for deletion on Jan. 4 and I had very little opportunity to advocate for it. It seems this whole process happens in secret and with very little to no transparency. I have a simple picture, to go with a simple entry. I am editing the entry to resubmit it but this simple matter of a photograph has spiraled out of control. Can you please help? Thank you - MarionPB (talk)

  • Hello, the photo is a work protected by copyright law; if you are the photographer, then you own the copyright of the photo and you have the right to publish here under a free license cc-by-sa-4.0, as you did, fine. If you are not the photographer then we need that the photographer send an explicit permission by mail to our permission system, that they agrre to publish their photo under such license.

Second and main issue : the Hockey Hall of Fame plaque is also under copyright protection, more precisely the text and the image are protected by copyright. As your photo show this plaque, then your photo is a derivative work of this plaque. We need a permission from the copyright holders of the text and of the image shown on the plaque, note that Peter G. Demers himself is likely not the copyright holder, even if he own physically the plaque. This also can be done via our permission system. Hope this help. Regards, Christian Ferrer (talk) 05:47, 6 February 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for clearing up that request. I do have permission from the copyright holder of the plaque - I shared that early on so that's why I am confused about why the picture was deleted. I do have all copyright permissions. Thank you MarionPB (talk) 10:14, 6 February 2019 (UTC)

  • Hello, it's done, you right. I know this very well because I already asked clarifications to the Smithsonian Institution, example for [5], you can see a free license for the record (occurence), but at bottom you will see a web statement for the images. They confirmed by mail that the images are not under the same license than the record. That is the same thing here, a license for the record and another license for the image. I'm new here and I've try so many time to upload my picture but all of my pictures had deleted. I don't know if I did something wrong. But I just want you to help me or receive my pictures. I own the copyright of the logo, and the second picture I took it from Twitter and the picture about my team — Preceding unsigned comment added by Raedruwaili (talk • contribs) 18:59, 14 February 2019 (UTC)

I am originally from Malaysia and came to Canada at age 15. I am part of the 10% Christian minority. 65% of Malysians are Muslims but I am Catholic. I did say in my userpage that I came from Malaysia. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 03:59, 24 February 2019 (UTC)

  • ✓ Done It seems there is a big weather difference between Malaysia and Canada, I guess your home country should miss you a bit. Until about the same age as you, 15, I lived in Normandy, also in France but which has a different climate than Sète. And if I may, however, I should like to say that I am bored with the north or northwest winds, called respectively Tramontane and Mistral, that are ubiquitous in my current region. I prefer the rainy and much less windy climate of Normandy. Christian Ferrer (talk) 07:12, 24 February 2019 (UTC)
  • Thank You for your help Christian. I was in Malaysia in July 2017 and the weather was very hot...in the mid to high 30's Celsius. My cousin near Kuala Lumpur told me a few days ago on WhatsApp it was 39 Celsius. That is the price for living so close to the equator in the tropics. Its just hot and humid. The Canadian winters are bad when there is snow but luckily it rains more in Vancouver than it snows most of the time. Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 07:32, 24 February 2019 (UTC)
