  • Our dedicated IRC channel: wikimedia-commons-sd webchat
  • Since our last newsletter, the Structured Data team has moved into designing and building prototypes for various features. The use of multilingual captions in the UploadWizard and on the file page has been researched, designed, discussed, and built out for use. Behind the scenes, back-end work on search is taking place and designs are being drawn up for the front-end. There will soon be specifications published for the use of the first Wikidata property on Commons, "Depicts," and a prototype is to be released to go along with that.

  • Thanks for the image reviews. I managed to mark your images. Yesterday...was like most days in Canada. Few people care about soccer. I left my car to see a house and do an interior inspection just before the Croatia-Russia penalty kick happened and when I returned to the car about 25 minutes later, I didn't know who won. The homeowner did not have the game on TV and I had to listen to this 24 hour News station for the results where sports scores is repeated every 30 minutes. The people on the radio station that were braodcasting the initial game were now talking about the injured Croatian players...so naturally I thought Croatia lost until News 1130 said Croatia won. High Point Rockers

I noticed the High Point Rockers baseball team in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball just uploaded a logo for the team. I'd like to upload the logo using the fair use policy without my account being blocked. Can you provide a step by step guide of how to do so. I'd like to do the same for future sports teams. Logos and trademarks are accepted in Wikimedia Commons only if

  1. they are in public domain (help) for a specific reason; or
  2. they are freely licensed by their owner, in such case please include a web link; or
  3. they are below the threshold of originality; or
  4. the copyright holder sends directly a permission to OTRS, where you can read how to do it.

RecolNat

Bonjour Christian,
Je vois que tu as découvert les superbes photos de RecolNat ! Merci de m'aider dans les importations d'échinodermes. Tu as dû remarquer qu'elles figurent sous leur protonyme, souvent obsolète et parfois depuis plusieurs siècles. Cependant, pour un certain nombre la synonymie est fautive, et une partie (disons, entre 1 et 5%) seront donc mésidentifiées si elle sont importées sans revérification. J'ignore tes compétences taxinomiques, mais je te recommande donc de vérifier rapidement la justesse du nom que tu leur attribues quand c'est possible, et de ne pas importer les photos douteuses. Pour les spécimens récoltés après 1950 il ne devrait pas y avoir de problème, il suffit de voir le nom à jour sur WoRMS (où je tâche de mettre aussi de plus en plus de photos, mais pour l'instant seulement pour les oursins).

Je me suis fait hurler dessus par le responsable de RecolNat quand je lui ai apporté les preuves qu'il y avait des erreurs de nommage dans ses fichiers, mais il n'a pas corrigé pour autant... Et surtout, il n'a toujours pas fait figurer les noms actuels des spécimens, ni opéré le référencement de la base de données sur Google, ce qui fait que ce trésor est encore complètement invisible sur le net, ce qui est bien dommage.

Enfin dernière chose, il y a beaucoup de redondance dans la collection, ce qui permet de sélectionner pour chaque taxon une seule photo, si possible la meilleure : de simples fragments de bras d'ophiure ne sont donc sans doute pas la priorité, il y a suffisamment de spécimens complet pour s'occuper un moment, dans un premier temps (ensuite on complètera peut-être avec des photos comme ça).

Bonjour, en effet je les ai trouvé en regardant tes catégories d'importation et si je pouvais confirmer quelque licenses. Biensur j'essaie de vérifier que les espèces sont bien nommées, d'ailleurs je crée généralement les catégories et les ai lié à wikidata. Par contre je ne suis pas d'accord en ce qui concerne les fragments, dans la mesure ou ces photos sont disponibles en hautes résolutions et sous license libre, autant en profiter, surtout si nous les catégorisons correctement ici. Hello. Elles ont bien sûr "une" valeur, mais c'est juste que vu l'étendue de la collection, elles ne sont pas forcément la priorité. Pour éviter de noyer les catégories (comme avec les horribles photos du Naturalis Biodiversity Center), je m'efforce, au moins dans un premier temps, de n'importer qu'une photo par espèce, la meilleure (et la plus sûre). Pour l'instant je n'en n'importe que très peu, je vérifie les images déjà ici, et j'y ajoute un {{LicenseReview}}, je créé les catégories, exemple Category:Microcyphus zigzag et lie ces dernières aux éléments Wikidata. Hi Christian Ferrer. Can you check and see if this file is the same as the one you deleted per Commons:Deletion requests/File:David Zepeda 2018.png? If it's not, the I don't think the license on this file is possible to verify since none of the source information actually shows the screenshot actually being found on YouTube. It looks like it might be from a TV show/movie, but not sure. Square Foot Logo flagged as violation

Hi Christian,

First, thanks for working hard to keep this site working properly and orderly.

I drew the little square foot logo for a fundraising campaign for a bicycle trail where we let people donate $20 and we tell them the gps coordinates of their particular square foot. I manage the web site friendsofthelegacytrail.org and we created this campaign. We also encourage other sites to advertise our program and they freely copy the logo I designed. These are the sites that also appear in a Google search on square foot campaign or square foot logo. I thought by adding the logo to the Wikimedia site I would at least have some small claim to authorship. In my Google searches I have never found anything similar other than small variations that I have created. Is there anything more I can do to prove that I drew the logo?

  • Hi, it appears there without a free license. Well, a free compatible license can be added at the web site, or a permission from the copyright holder (even if it is you) can be sent to OTRS. However your logo, in order to stay here and as well as for the other content here, must also fall within the Commons scope. Note that if you are sure that your content fall within the Commons scope, and that you are able to send a permission ( or to add a free license to the web site) you can convert my request for speedy deletion by clicking on your file page on "Convert to DR" and then add your explanation.   • You have likely seen my images over here Unfortunately the last time I took a UBC museum photo was in 2013 but they are high resolution photos of European art works and mostly native Indian art in UBC Vancouver, Canada.   • I have generally stopped taking photos of the European ceramic and native artworks because its in 1 building Museum of Anthropology at UBC and costs $14.00 to enter. Yes indeed many people don't know very much about copyright and permissions, but at least they ask. For the small story, people's from media too, such as France Télévisions seems to don't care very much about copyright as they continue to use my image with a wrong attribution, even after I've kindly asked to them by mail that they write the correct attribution, not even I had an answer. Vancouver is very beautiful but since the weather is very mild in winter--it mostly rains here like Seattle--the prices of single family homes, townhomes and condos are very expensive...since almost everyone wants to avoid the famous cold Canadian winters elsewhere.   • Hi,

First, to be eligible for hosting on Wikimedia Commons, all files and other content, included logos and posters, must fall within the Commons scope.

Secondly, logos and trademarks are accepted in Wikimedia Commons only if

  1. they are in public domain (help) for a specific reason; or
  2. they are freely licensed by their owner, in such case please include a web link; or
  3. they are below the threshold of originality; or
  4. the copyright holder sends directly a permission to OTRS, where you can read how to do it. Note that even if it is you who are the copyright holder, you must send this permission.

Note also that the permissions system (OTRS) is run by volunteers and there is a queue, if your image has been deleted, and you have sent a permission (before or after deletion), do not re-upload again the erased image yourself, it's forbidden. If the permission is valid and the image meets the criteria of our project scope, then it will be automatically restored.

Here, for your case, that is the same thing for the logo and for the poster : the copyright holder must send a permission to OTRS. All this is done in order to protect the rights of the owner(s). Hope this help.

    • Structured Data on Commons: A draft specification for using Depicts statements on Commons is up for community feedback.
    • It's possible to add somevalue and novalue using QuickStatements, and to use the tool on test.wikidata.org as well.
    • More properties can be searched using haswbstatement. This includes all properties with "external identifier", "string", "item", "property", "lexeme", "form" and "sense" datatypes, except published in (P1433) and cites (P2860). In addition you may make queries without a specified value.
    • The page creation and edit rate limit imposed in April will be removed in the next days. However, users who are not bots or administrators are throttled to 90 edits per minute (which was set up on all Wikimedia wikis in May).
    • These new languages are now supported for monolingual text strings: mid, mnw, gmy, rar, haz, uga. The language doesn't show up in the suggester, but you can save the statement and it will be stored properly.
    • Reminder: Wikidata's sixth birthday happens in two months. It's time to think about organizing a meetup with your local community, or preparing a gift (see the list of presents last year).
    • Lexicographical data: you can now try Senses on beta
    • 25% of the labeling campaign to improve the vandalism detection on Wikidata has been done. Please help by reviewing a few edits!

Je ne suis pas le seul à l'avoir remarqué, et nous l'avons questionné. Pour toute réponse il a archivé sa page de discussion. Image Approval

Hello, I am new to wikimeida commons. I am trying to upload images to a page I have created. These images have been flagged for possible copyright infringement. I am the owner of these images. I am unsure how to markup these files so they can be approved. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Hello yours images have been deleted because they can be found previously published in the web without an explicit free compatible license. If a free source is not available in the web, then the copyright holder, even if it is you, must send a permission to our permission system where you can read how to do it.

Note also that : "To be eligible for hosting on Wikimedia Commons, all files and other content must fall within the Commons scope."
