Short summary: This is an open letter to the Wikimedia Foundation. We ask the Wikimedia Foundation to invest in Wikimedia Commons and think big: we do not need just a few more tools or features, but a modern platform for the long term.

Think big!

An open letter about Wikimedia Commons

Dear Wikimedia Foundation,

We, the undersigned, are involved with Wikimedia Commons, the central media platform of the Wikimedia movement. Commons is where the movement comes together: we take pictures, we upload files, we embed images in Wikipedia articles, we deal with legal questions, we teach others how to use Commons, we work with cultural institutions (GLAM), or we support Commons in other ways.

Commons is one of the largest online media collections in the world. It offers freely licensed files to everyone: via Wikipedia and other Wikimedia wikis, and also many other websites and individuals in the world. This makes Commons vital for millions of people on the planet.

But we are concerned about the present situation and the future of Wikimedia Commons. Our platform is fighting to remain relevant in a world that is dominated by visual platforms (such as YouTube, Instagram, flickr etc.) that are constantly evolving. Commons, in contrast, fails modern standards of usability and struggles with numerous foundational issues. It is difficult for new contributors to join while being frustrating for existing contributors to upload, curate, search and reuse content.[1]

We understand that the Wikimedia Foundation has acknowledged that “there has been no formal accountability for the core multimedia infrastructure of Commons that is in desperate need of repair" in the latest annual plan.[2] We are also encouraged by the Strategy 2030 recommendation to improve the experience of users on our platforms.[3] While that is encouraging, we want to identify immediate needs and think big about the future of Commons.

Among our concerns are:

  • Commons can be an uncomfortable environment to new users who have a lot to learn in order to contribute in a significant way.[4][5] Compared to other websites for photographers, it is not a very attractive site.
  • Commons requires a good knowledge of English, even though it strives to be a multilingual platform.[6]
  • Commons is difficult to use for mobile users.[7][8]
  • Commons has problems with scale, as it struggles to handle bulk uploads or large sets of files.[9]
  • Commons lacks modern methods for community interaction, such as notifications or leaving feedback for users.[10]
  • Commons lacks development in its core feature set. Tools written by volunteers have helped new innovations and functionality, but keeping these tools maintained is hard.
  • Commons is limited in its support for file formats.[11][12][13]
  • Commons lacks video content support beyond basic playback, such as collaborative editing and creation.

On the one hand, we strongly welcome quick solutions for the most urgent problems such as the upload of content. On the other hand, we believe that the improvement of Commons is not just a software problem: we should have a broad discussion to find out what kind of sustainable platform we need in the future, for a better overall user experience, for a better coordination on the platform and for the needs of everyone who works for free knowledge.

We also need a profound investigation about the long term: maybe the MediaWiki software as it is used for Wikimedia Commons is not the best way for working with media files.

With this open letter, we want to emphasize how important Commons is for the communities. Together with the communities, the Wikimedia Foundation can and must make a difference. We are eager to engage with a dedicated team on a road map and solutions.

  88. I totally agree. For instance as one of the largest contributors of the images to project I struggle to apply and teach correct categorization, but after all categories are totally invisible to mobile users. I receive every week emails and messages from people all over the world asking for "similar images", "higher resolution" or info that could be easily found in the categories or in the general layout of the files. I already tried to ask for a fix with no success: phabricator for me was a very frustrating experience. --Sailko (talk) 14:35, 13 October 2022 (UTC) (Wikimedian since 2006, 300,000+ own files uploaded, about 1 million edits in all Wikimedia projects)[reply]

  323. Contributing to Wikicommons is a great way of destroying the enthusiasm of new and existing supporters. If the site had a personality then it would be a person determined to make sure that the number of problems exceeded the number of photos. Photos that are "not for commercial use" are all over commercial sites like google, facebook and twitter but our non-commercial site cannot unpick the legal barriers that others steam roller over. Charles Matthews (talk) 13:58, 19 November 2022 (UTC) I have been a steady user of Commons for many years now, and have two substantial projects there (one on engravings, the other involving heraldry software). I use SDoC, which is a really good innovation. I'm interested in content issues such as accuracy of map metadata, and the changing of titles (comes up in heraldry). I see improvements in documentation that would be helpful. While I myself have not experienced problems at the level of the community, I think some discussion of the place of bot operators would be a good idea.[reply]

  382. --Loopy30 (talk) Wikimedian for 7 years, have been uploading images of species from iNaturalist that were not currently represented in WikiCommons (4000+ so far). We need a better way of searching and/or browsing for images. For example, we could filter by geographic coordinates rather than using multiple categories that might be redundant, not at the right level, not exact, or in a different language/spelling. The abilty to apply or refine multiple filters (uploader, date, size, file extension type, media type, license type) should also be possible - my local libraries already do this. 18:11, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  456. Commons is definitely long over due for some updates. The limited support for file formats and difficulty using it on mobile devices are two major issues. Uploading also use improvement. Uploading singles files or doing bulk uploads are both needlessly obtuse and often take more effort then it's worth. Especially when it comes to doing bulk uploading. It really shouldn't be that hard though. Especially since uploading files is the core purpose of the platform. --Adamant1 (talk) 14:54, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  459. I've been a Wikipedian since 2005, and on Commons basically since it started. After reading the list of grievances in this letter, I feel strongly that, in hindsight, the decision to base this platform on a wiki was a bad idea. It sounds like we need to throw that out and adopt something more similar to Flickr and other modern websites. It probably needs a standalone app too. As far as communications and notifications go, I still don't understand why the Foundation developed Flow but then coward from implementing it on the major existing wikis (Commons, Wikipedia, Wiktionary, etc.). Yeah, people don't like change, duh; you have to manage that and eventually force the change. — voidxor 22:07, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  460. Commons should be as multilingual as possible, and currently, it just isn't up to the same multilingual standards as, say, Wikidata. That among other reasons stated in this letter is why I agree with it and am signing it. OmegaFallon (talk) 15:22, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  469. I had not signed this statement yet, because in my opinion it doesn't think big enough at all. IMO we should really think beyond direct needs and requests, which may in many cases only distract from the bigger picture. We need a general discussion on how we want to use and share multimedia besides and beyond Wikipedia, which is not only about a file hosting platform but about much more. For instance, offering infrastructure to editors to share media knowledge in context, like WikiFlix, and importantly - making sure it reaches wide audiences. I think the integration of structured data on Commons has been a promising start (albeit very unfinished) and because of its integration with Wikidata and its multilinguality, it's a path to follow further and build upon. Spinster (talk) 06:36, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  470. 472. It ain't Wikipedia alone who should profit from Commons, but any other MediaWiki project could and should make use of Commons. Almost every WMF project needs images and/or other file format data from commons. There are 10,000 of PDFs used in Wikisource used for transcriptions. --Matthiasb (talk) 16:59, 10 September 2024 (UTC) Active in Commons, Wikipedia, Wikinews, Wikisource, Wikidata, doing GLAM projects for German WP.[reply]

  1. See the paper Menking, Rangarajan, Gilbert “Sharing small pieces of the world” (2018): Increasing and broadening participation in Wikimedia Commons”: “[...] Commons is consistently beset with usability issues such as challenges with batch uploads/downloads, content findability, and content evaluation [...].” (p. 1).
  2. See the Annual Plan here.
  3. See the Strategy recommendation Improve User Experience: "Improving the experience of users on our platforms will allow more people to join projects, access information, and contribute. This is a shared responsibility between developers, designers, and communities and requires collective action throughout the Wikimedia ecosystem."
  4. See the paper Menking, Rangarajan, Gilbert “Sharing small pieces of the world” (2018): Increasing and broadening participation in Wikimedia Commons”: “In addition to technical challenges such as image uploads, contributors to Commons must also navigate intricate policies concerning copyright and permissions, reoccurring vandalism, problems with other users, and photography critiques. Similar to Wikipedia, these factors create a sociotechnical environment that can be intimidating for new users [...].” (p. 1).
  5. See the Strategy recommendation Improve User Experience: "Easy-to-find and easy-to-understand resources for newcomers, including onboarding media and guiding interfaces helping them independently learn and navigate. [...] We need to encourage new members into our communities [...]. This is especially relevant considering existing platforms might be complicated for many newcomers to acquire the technological skills to participate or find resources to guide them. The processes, tools, platforms, and communication channels that have grown around Wikimedia projects have created a steep learning curve for newcomers [...]."
  6. This policy page calls Wikimedia Commons a multilingual project, but it also shows that English is usually the main language. One example are the names of categories.
  7. Maryana Pinchuk in 2014 about the Commons app: "The Mobile Web team has decided to hide the uploads features (upload & add to article + upload from left nav) on the mobile site until we have the time/resources to rebuild them into a more productive contribution stream. [...] This is both a crappy experience for the end-user and a major headache for the team... It requires dedicated product and design attention and quite a bit of engineering work, none of which we have the resources for."
  8. See also the Strategy recommendation Improve User Experience: "Interfaces designed intentionally for a wide range of devices so users can consume and contribute in diverse contexts.".
  9. gtmetrix.com website performance tests confirm poor site performance especially in large searches, but also the mainpage has plenty of issues
  10. See the Strategy recommendation Coordinate Across Stakeholders: "Identify and resolve core barriers to make way for collaborative work on modern technologies, creating new interfaces, and improving our user experiences."
  11. A comment on mediawiki.org: "There isn't a process. Each time is bespoke, and needs to run a different gamut of concerns depending on who objects that week, it seems. There's also no team that's the owner of all the different aspects of media support for MediaWiki, let alone Wikimedia production, so I'm not sure who would be best-placed to write up such a workflow, sorry."
