Thank you for your contributions. Your image or other content was recently deleted, or will soon be deleted, in accordance with our process and policies, because it was not, or is not, within our scope. Please review our project scope, but in short, Commons is targeted at educational media files including photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text and video clips. The expression “educational” is to be understood according to its broad meaning of “providing knowledge; instructional or informative”. Wikimedia Commons does not contain text articles like encyclopedia articles, textbooks, news, word definitions and such. Each of these other kinds of content have their own projects: Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikinews, Wiktionary and Wikiquote. If the content seems to fit the scope of one of those other projects, please consider contributing it there. Otherwise, consider an alternative outlet. If you think that the deletion was in error because the contribution really was in scope, you can appeal it at Commons:Undeletion requests, giving a reason why it fits our scope to help others evaluate the matter. Thank you for your understanding.

Question Thanks Podzemnik. I've put up a comparison (uncropped, before and after perspective correction) on my sandbox. I'm not sure I can see a particular distortion on subjects to the left (e.g. young lady) compared to those on the right (e.g. couple standing roughly at the same focal plane and distance from the centre)? --Julesvernex2 06:47, 29 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Well done for spotting the problem at Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Sciurus vulgaris in Aberdeenshire.jpg and others. Oh dear. It seems rather foolish to seek valueless trinkets on the internet by dishonesty. Regardless of what FP's I've earned myself, I can look over my portfolio and be content at seeing my own artistic and technical achievements, and also be encouraged by the collaboration with others to learn myself and help others how to take better pictures. What a strange thing to do, to move bytes from one part of the internet to another part in order for some "username" to earn gold stars. Sigh. -- Colin (talk) 20:04, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I share your sense of bewilderment, Colin. It took me quite a while to bring up the subject, because I kept coming up with bona-fide alternatives that could rationally explain what is otherwise a very short-legged lie Julesvernex2 (talk) 21:10, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

That's a template to tag cultural properties, not some random things like rivers and cities so don't use it for that. Multichill (talk) 20:05, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I see, thank you for letting me know Multichill. Is there an alternative template that can/should be used to link non-cultural properties to their respective Wikidata entries? Julesvernex2 (talk) 20:19, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
For now I would just add it as depicts (P180). The number of those statements are increasing quite a bit and I wouldn't be surprised if someone made a template to show them in a pretty way at some point in the future. Multichill (talk) 20:21, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Native plants of the Azores

[edit]

Hey I couldn't help to be amazed at your photos! Currently there are almost no pictures on Wiki commons for endemic plants in the Azores and those that exist aren't even in their natural habitat. Unfortunately these islands are completely altered with invasives like Pittosporum undulatum, Hedychium gardnerianum, Cryptomeria trees etc... and native plants are increasingly harder to find. [1] These are all probably Pittosporum (I can't see the foliage though), there's also some Cryptomerias on the side. If you took some photos of the natives the next time you hop in the Azores it would be great. Even if it's not the right angle or right lighting it would massively help Wikimedia (from a botanical point of view). The easiest ones to spot are Morella faya, Laurus azorica and Erica azorica :) Average Portuguese Joe (talk) 03:09, 5 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Average Portuguese Joe, thanks for the hand in identifying species! I'll go through our remaining images from Azores (which didn't quite make the cut from a photography standpoint) and check if the endemic plants you listed are there. Is it okay if I ping you in case of doubt? -- Julesvernex2 (talk) 10:23, 5 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Of course! Feel free to tag me if you need any help identifying. If you don't find any photos, you can always take them in a future time, no pressure. [2] This website can also help you with IDs. Average Portuguese Joe (talk) 13:36, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Topaz problems

[edit]

Thanks for your helpful comments on my recent FPC. I think this is a new problem for me, perhaps in a new issue of Topaz or I may have clicked some setting by mistake. I hope you can help. I cannot find any solution on the Topaz website or elsewhere on the internet. I usually use DNG converter to edit CR3-compressed RAW files and save as jpg. I then process these in the latest release of Topaz Denoise AI. I use it in standalone mode. I have tried putting CR3 images through Denoise AI but it doesn't seem to help. I have tried saving as tiff, but that doesn't help either. I use Photoshop CS6 and can set mode to 16 bit, but by then it's too late. I cannot find any settings in DNG converted or Topaz to choose 16 bit. Help!! ps my dragonfly image was processed using Helicon Focus (latest release) and I can't find a 16 bit setting there either. Hi Jules, Gabriel and Verne,

I just by chance saw that your beautiful pic about a museum wall lined with Tintin comic books is under attack of maybe be deleted. Beforehand, I would like to assure you, that the Esperanto wikipedia would be keen to locally store the file, and so can do several other wikipedia branches. Of course, that is not the same than having a file at display for all wikipedia branches ... but it is better than not to have it in public any more. Cheers, ThomasPusch (talk) 18:59, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Thomas, we'll keep that in mind for future images! --Julesvernex2 (talk) 20:54, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What a pity. I'll restore the pic in the local wikipedia. ThomasPusch (talk) 21:31, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please have a look: eo:dosiero:Muro kun bildstriaj libroj de Tinĉjo, muzeo Calouste Gulbenkian en Lisbono julesvernex2.jpg. I felt not OK to leave the file name in english, because it's about book covers in many languages by a french speaking author and editor, photographed in a portuguese speaking museum - no content link to the english speaking world - so I translated the file name to Esperanto and left out the obvious country name "Portugal": where else could Lisboa / Lisbono be if not in Portugal??? If you like, I can also move the file to a portuguese name, but for esperanto texts of course a esperanto file name is most practical.
As you probably have a "unified login" user name for all wikimedia branches, you could, if you like, go to the file page, leave a blank space anywhere and save the page with a note "new publication approved" in english or portuguese. If you like, you could even put something into your until now completely empty user page eo:Uzanto:Julesvernex2 in the esperanto branch, noting e.g. {{Babel|pt-n|en-5|es=1|eo-0}}, indicating you don't speak any esperanto, though, being travellers, you can probably even understand some written esperanto, so you could also indicate "eo=1", and can add the other languages you know, only if you like of course, nothing is needed. And you could check, if my portuguese description (en esperanto "priskribo") for the photo is more or less OK - my portuguese is very weak... ThomasPusch (talk) 23:11, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Thomas, it's great to see this image back online! I've approved the upload and tweaked the Portuguese description of the image (everything was spot on but the choice of words was closer to Brazilian Portuguese than to European Portuguese. The latter is perhaps the best choice since the museum is located in Lisbon). Going forward, we'll keep an eye out for stuff in Esperanto that we can photograph! --Julesvernex2 (talk) 08:55, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, my portuguese teacher really was a brazilian girl. In fact, banda desenhada looks more european even to me, similar to bandes dessinées in french. Did you know, that in 2018 a big Esperanto Convention of all ages took place in Lisbon? I'm glad the photo at least didn't disappear completely from Wikipedia: if other languages branches choose as well to reupload the image, of course the users there must decide, though it's helpful the image is still visible anywhere in Wikipedia. Anyway I think it's a very appropriate picture to show the internationality of Timtim/Tintin. Thank you again for your work. ThomasPusch (talk) 13:48, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
