Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which information may be missing. Thank you. Siebrand 14:30, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT (talk) 06:32, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Chyby v popisu
Kdyžtak to prosím příště zkontrouluj. Jinak díky za Tvé fotky a příspěvky. :-) Zdraví --Midi7 (talk) 18:24, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Kategorie
Například v tomto případě vámi vložená kategorie Category:Famous trees in Pardubice District mohla ze stávajících kategorií nahradit pouze kategorii Trees in Pardubice Region, zatímco všechny ostatní kategorie měly být ponechány. Vaší úpravou jste obrázek úplně vyhodil z města Pardubic i z kategorie Labe a lodi Arnošt z Pardubic. Podobné chyby jsem si všiml i u několika dalších vámi překategorizovaných fotek. --ŠJů (talk) 16:19, 8 November 2011 (UTC)
Autopatrol given
[edit]Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. odder (talk) 22:23, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
Copyright status: File:Nicov, silnice na Popelnou.JPG
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Nicov, silnice na Popelnou.JPG. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Identifikace fotky
[edit]Ahoj.

- Several Commons community members are working on ways to integrate Wikidata in Wikimedia Commons. While this is not full-fledged structured data yet, this work helps to prepare for future conversion of data, and helps to understand how Wikidata and Commons can work better together.
- Thanks to Jarekt and other contributors, some Commons templates can now be filled via Wikidata: Creator (Phabricator) and Institution (Phabricator). Work is ongoing on the Artwork template (Phabricator).
- Thanks to Mike Peel and others, Wikidata-powered infoboxes can now be added to Commons categories, with the template Wikidata Infobox. (Example)
- Multichill is working on an experimental workflow to upload images to Commons via Wikidata (and using metadata from Wikidata). See a part of it here.

Structured Data on Commons Newsletter - Summer 2018
[edit]Welcome to the newsletter for Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons! You can update your subscription to the newsletter and contribute to the next issue. Do inform others who you think will want to be involved in the project!
- Community updates
- Our dedicated IRC channel: wikimedia-commons-sd webchat
- Since our last newsletter, the Structured Data team has moved into designing and building prototypes for various features. The use of multilingual captions in the UploadWizard and on the file page has been researched, designed, discussed, and built out for use. Behind the scenes, back-end work on search is taking place and designs are being drawn up for the front-end. There will soon be specifications published for the use of the first Wikidata property on Commons, "Depicts," and a prototype is to be released to go along with that.
- A workshop on what Wikidata properties Commons will need. This workshop will be open for the entire month of July 2018 at minimum.

- In late February there was a discussion around how Commons generally sees data being modeled.
- The first discussion on copyright and licensing with Commons was held in March. This was a "high level" discussion, there will be a consultation later this summer about the deeper mapping of copyright and licensing in a structured way.
- In April there was an exercise for GLAM partners in metadata and ontology mapping.
- A discussion about the design for Multilingual Captions on the file page took place in May. You can still review the designs and leave feedback.
- There was an IRC office hour in June to discuss progress so far and future plans.
- Wikimania 2018
- Three sessions about Structured Commons are officially scheduled for Wikimania 2018 - Cape Town, South Africa - July 2018.
- Wikimedia Commons and GLAM needs around the world (Friday 20 July, 10:30 local time)
- Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons and knowledge equity (Friday 20 July, 14:00 local time)
- Design challenge workshop: How can multilingual structured metadata bring knowledge equity to Commons? (Friday 20 July, 14:30 local time)
- Structured Data on Commons is also a focus area during the Wikimania 2018 Hackathon. We will, among other things, do 'live' modelling of Wikidata properties for Commons - an offline spin-off of the community consultation taking place on wiki.
- Partners and allies
- We are still welcoming (more) staff from GLAMs (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) to become part of our long-term focus group (phabricator task T174134). You will be kept in the loop of the project, and receive regular small surveys and requests for feedback. Get in touch with Sandra if you're interested - your input in helping to shape this project is highly valued!
- Structured Data on Commons was presented to GLAM audiences during EuropeanaTech 2018 in Rotterdam (15 May 2018) and at the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek Forum in Berlin (4 June 2018).
- Research
Two research projects about Wikimedia Commons are currently ongoing, or in the process of being finished:
- Research:Curation workflows on Wikimedia Commons—a project that seeks to understand the current workflows of Commons contributors who curate media (categorize it, delete it, link to it from other projects, etc.).
- Research:Technical needs of external re-users of Commons media—soliciting feedback from individuals and organizations that re-use Commons content outside of Wikimedia projects, in order to understand their current painpoints and unmet needs.
- Prototypes will be available for Depicts soon.
- Stay up to date!
- Follow the Structured Data on Commons project on Phabricator: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/project/profile/34/
- Subscribe to this newsletter to receive it on a talk page of your own choice.
- Join the next IRC office hour and ask questions to the team! The date for next quarter will be announced soon.

Structured Data Newsletter - Research link fix
[edit]Greetings,
The newsletter omitted two interwiki prefixes, breaking the links on non-meta wikis as you might see above. Here are the correct links:
- m:Research:Curation workflows on Wikimedia Commons—a project that seeks to understand the current workflows of Commons contributors who curate media (categorize it, delete it, link to it from other projects, etc.).
- m:Research:Technical needs of external re-users of Commons media—soliciting feedback from individuals and organizations that re-use Commons content outside of Wikimedia projects, in order to understand their current painpoints and unmet needs.
My apologies, I hope you find the corrected links helpful.

Captions in January
[edit]Structured Data - file captions coming this week (January 2019)
[edit]My apologies if this is a duplicate message for you, it is being sent to multiple lists which you may be signed up for.
Hi all, following up on last month's announcement...
Multilingual file captions will be released this week, on either Wednesday, 9 January or Thursday, 10 January 2019. Captions are a feature to add short, translatable descriptions to files. Here's some links you might want to look follow before the release, if you haven't already:
- Read over the help page for using captions - I wrote the page on mediawiki.org because captions are available for any MediaWiki user, feel free to host/modify a copy of the page here on Commons.
- Test out using captions on Beta Commons.
- Leave feedback about the test on the captions test talk page, if you have anything you'd like to say prior to release.
Additionally, there will be an IRC office hour on Thursday, 10 January with the Structured Data team to talk about file captions, as well as anything else the community may be interested in. Date/time conversion, as well as a link to join, are on Meta.
Thanks for your time, I look forward to seeing those who can make it to the IRC office hour on Thursday. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 21:09, 7 January 2019 (UTC)Media uploaded from placeholders
[edit]Zdravím.
V kategorii Category:Media uploaded from placeholders on Czech Wikipedia se objevilo 9 obrázků Category:Ledenice, které ovšem byly zařazeny pouze v kategorii Category:Buildings in the Czech Republic.
Co se týče natvrdo vkládání do Category:Buildings in the Czech Republic, připadá mi to lepší než nevkládat žádnou kategorii.

- Reverting over 10 file renames is disruptive editing and something of which you can be blocked for,
- You should've come to my talkpage and discussed it with me instead of being a moron and reverting over it. –Davey2010Talk 22:41, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Davey2010: Exactly, but you started it. Being an admin does not mean that you are allowed to be a moron and revert all the work I have done on preparing the renames, without starting a discussion with me first. --Vojtěch Dostál (talk) 06:02, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
- I'm not an admin tho, Sorry but that's not how it works - I rename or decline ... and you come to my talkpage asking why it's been declined .... Sometimes I can process over 200 filenames all in a row which can take a good hou r or 2.... I'm not going to further add more time on by notifying every person why it was declined (because I already gave a reason when declining)....–Davey2010Talk 11:26, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Davey2010: 1-2 hours spent on 200 files is nothing compared to my 30 minutes spent on these 11 pictures. And why did you revert me again anyway? I respected your argument that descriptions should not be in conflict with the filename. --Vojtěch Dostál (talk) 11:30, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
- Because the filename decline was valid. –Davey2010Talk 11:42, 5 August 2019 (UTC)

- I've gone ahead and moved all of the files as having done some research I was incorrect,
- In future when renaming you must explain why you want the file renamed (so if it's the wrong chapel then put "wrong chapel") - All of your file names were under #2 obvious error however to myself who's never been to any country in the world except France... it wasn't very obvious to me...,
- Also another thing to bear in mind us filemovers don't and certainly are not expected to do research before moving - That's your job,
- Anyway I've moved all of the files, Thanks. –Davey2010Talk 12:05, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you for the renaming. As for the reason, it would be useful to have another renaming criterion called "obvious factual error". Obviously I've done the research and I didn't ask you to do it and I didn't know that you tend to verify the factual correctness behind this kind of renaming requests. That really must be sometimes difficult given that you probably don't speak Czech. --Vojtěch Dostál (talk) 13:06, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Davey2010: Also please don't forget about File:Kovový kříž, kaple sv. Anny, Svitavy-Lány.JPG and File:Kaple Panny Marie, Svitavy - Lány.JPG, thank you --Vojtěch Dostál (talk) 13:10, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
- No worries, It's swings and roundabouts really - sometimes verifying is needed and sometimes it isn't, I know from your perspective it's a pain in the backside having someone who seems OTT in renaming but from my perspective I always want to make sure what I'm renaming too is correct as unfortunately in the past I've renamed files that wasn't correct :),
- It is to be honest and unfortunately the translation tool on my chrome doesn't help :),
- Anyway I apologise for the unintentional drama but as I just like to make sure what I'm renaming too is correct :),
- Thanks, and Happy editing :), –Davey2010Talk 13:26, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
- Hey, you turned out to be a good guy! :-) Thanks and happy editing, too. --Vojtěch Dostál (talk) 13:39, 5 August 2019 (UTC)

September 2019: it's Wiki Loves Monuments time again!
[edit]Hi
You're receiving this message because you've previously contributed to the annual Wiki Loves Monuments contest in the UK. We'd be delighted if you would do so again this year and help record our local built environment for future generations.
You can find more details at the Wiki Loves Monuments UK website. Or, if you have images taken in other countries, you can check the international options. This year's contest runs until 30 September 2019.
Many thanks for your help once more! MichaelMaggs (talk) 15:35, 3 September 2019 (UTC)
Structured Data - blogs posted in Wikimedia Space
[edit]There are two separate blog entries for Structured Data on Commons posted to Wikimedia Space that are of interest:
- Working with Structured Data on Commons: A Status Report, by Lucas Werkmeister, discusses some ways that editors can work with structured data. Topics include tools that have been written or modified for structured data, in addition to future plans for tools and querying services.
- Structured Data on Commons - A Blog Series, written by me, is a five-part posting that covers the basics of the software and features that were built to make structured data happen. The series is meant to be friendly to those who may have some knowledge of Commons, but may not know much about the structured data project.

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!
[edit]Hello,
Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.
I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!
From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.
If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.
Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:Zaniklá obec Stříbrné Hutě (1946).jpg.
Thank you. |

Your opinion about OpenRefine and its Wikimedia Commons features: two (!) surveys
[edit]Hi! You have recently tried/used Wikimedia Commons features in OpenRefine (uploading files, or editing existing files). I'm curious to hear how this has gone, also if you only briefly tried these features.
To help the OpenRefine team with future improvements, it would be immensely helpful if you would be willing to spend a bit of time filling in two surveys. (Yes, two! Each of them uses a different method and (open source) platform). Both will run until approximately end October 2023.
- A first, classical, survey (fully anonymous) where you can tell us how you use the Commons features in OpenRefine, and how you (want to) learn to use them better;
- A second, more experimental survey (also fully anonymous) in which you prioritize the features that matter most to you. This second survey is a bit strange in that you can 'just keep clicking'. Feel free to use it as long or as briefly as you want; you can stop any time. Please also add your own suggestions!
Many thanks! With kind regards, SFauconnier (talk) 11:11, 6 October 2023 (UTC)

It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

Změna pravidel Fotíme Česko a Foto českých obcí
K této úpravě pravidel přistupujeme z důvodu usnadnění administrativy, zpracování a účetní náročnosti dlouhodobě otevřených tiketů. Tato změna pravidel vstupuje v platnost ihned. Nejpozději v květnu budeme uzavírat tikety s fotografiemi z ledna tohoto roku. Od května už bude platit maximální 3 měsíční "stáří" fotografií.
Pravidla proplacení nákladů naleznete na stránce Wikipedie:Fotíme Česko/Proplacení cesty.
S přáním dobrého světla, --Richard Sekerak (WMCZ) (talk) 14:37, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
