Hi JoJan, it just occured to me that you licensed this image with a Creative Commons tag because you made a photograph of that painting. There is however an official policy by Wikimedia Foundation that photographs of two-dimensional artwork are automatically in the public domain where the copyright term of the object itself has expired (Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag). And since that is the case for Gaston La Touche's art, I'd like to ask you to relicense that file with {{PD-old-90}}. Regards, De728631 (talk) 20:42, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

JoJan (talk) 15:19, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Using two of your pictures in a textbook[edit]

I am using two of your pictures in a textbook (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:San_Domenico56.jpg; http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:San_Domenico55.jpg). Initially they will be credited in the legend immediately below to 'Georges Jansoone' --but since this is printed text, and there are no hyperlinks, let me know if you would like me to add any other information, such as location, any URL, whatever.

Thanks for those great pictures.

Thanks for uploading File:Gerard ter Borch.Zittende jonge vrouw.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Copyright request[edit]

Dear Jojan,

First of all, I just wanted to say thank you for your work in making pictures available on Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to use one of your photos in a publication I am working on at the moment, and since it will be produced by a charity organization my royalties are not large (and would quickly be swallowed up if I had to pay for images).

My publisher, however, has requested that I confirm with you that you are willing to give me permission to use the following:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Museum_of_Anatolian_Civilizations082_kopie1jpg.jpg

Are you fine with this? Could you please e-mail me at achalmers@adelaide.tabor.edu.au

Once again, thanks for your work and I look forward to hearing back from you.

All the best,

Dr Aaron Chalmers

Larger images from the British Library collection on Flickr Commons[edit]

Thank you for the images you have been uploading from the British Library Mechanical Curator collection on Flickr Commons!

You may be interested to know that larger (ie higher resolution) versions of the images are available there, if you click on the "three circles" icon at the bottom of the image descriptions there. This brings up a "More Actions" menu which includes the option "Download/All Sizes". Ideally we would like for Commons to be able to have the highest resolution possible.

Note that the Flickr upload bot and Flickr2commons bot are available, which make it possible for images to be transferred directly from Flickr to Commons without having to download them. The {{Rotate}} template can then be used to mark an image for rotation, using {{rotate|90}} to rotate an image clockwise, and {{rotate|-90}} for an image to be rotated anti-clockwise. Images can also be cropped in place, using the interactive croptool.

Hope this makes future uploading a little easier! Jheald (talk) 10:57, 14 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing this out. I didn't know. But I won't use the bot as I download the image on my computer, crop and enhance the picture and remove the text, which I then translate into English when uploading to the Commons and may add some additional data. Misidentified D. filix-mas[edit]

Hello JoJan!

There is one older image of yours from May 2005, used for many wiki articles as example of Dryopteris filix-mas as your ID tells. I am botanist and do dare to EXCLUDE the chance this fern was truly Common male fern. My preferred guess about real ID is Matteuccia struthiopteris, which got no spore producing fronds in May, the ones of the previous year might be invisible laying at ground. Second possibility would be Oreopteris limbosperma, as well looking quite similar to your photo. Several features of displayed fern do disagree with D. filix-mas, e.g. missing scales at midrib, whitish colour of midrib (rachis) clearly brighter than lamina, amongst other characters.

This image is linked to several other items, thus will give wrong impressions to users and might lead to further misidentifications. Since that i dared to propose renaming and moving of your photo, hoping you will accept the reasons.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dryopteris_filix-mas.jpg

Best regards

Erwin Gruber --Stamnaria0568 (talk) 13:33, 6 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ten years ago. That's a long time. At that time I identified the fern as best as I could. But I'm not a botanist. I had to rely on the info given on the spot and on handbooks. At that time there were not many other photos available on the internet to compare with. Therefore, if you are sure of your identification of the fern, rename it. I have no trouble with this. Best regards, JoJan (talk) 15:30, 6 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

J.B. Leroy[edit]

JoJan (talk) 13:35, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

American Soldier on Horseback by Edward Berge[edit]

Hello JoJan, I've been trying feverishly to contact you. Why? Well, I'm married to a lady who was born and raised in a village in Germany; I met and married her while I was in the USAF. Her dad, now deceased, loved going to flea markets and buying who knew what until of course he brought it/whatever home. One of those "things" he purchased was the bronze statue you photoed~once upon a time~titled, American Solider on Horseback", by Edward Berge. Shortly thereafter, I came to learn about you, the statue, etc. at the following website (I believe created by you): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Berge. Anyway, after doing further research of the sculptor Edward Berge I contacted the Baltimore Museum of Art and spoke to a curator about the piece, American Solider on Horseback. To say the least, he was extremely intrigued. With that said, I was hoping for any additional information you could provide reference the piece/statue. The curator definitely thought it is of significant historical importance and I'd like to help fill in the blanks. So, besides the article you wrote on the website mentioned above, is there anything else at all (according to the curator, anything and everything is relevant) about the statue/Edward Berge you can add/expand upon. For instance: when and where did you take the picture of the statue; if, at an art auction, how much was it selling for at the time; being that Edward Berge was from Baltimore, any guess as to where and when Edward Berge made the statue (being that by father-in-law picked it up at a flea-market in Germany); etc. By looking at all your contributions to Wikimedia/...pedia, you probably get flooded with all sorts of emails, tags, etc., but any help regarding this would be greatly appreciated. Thank You and Regards! If you do decide to get back in contact with me, please email at: rgregg719@aol.com. Although I signed up as a Wikipedia Member (my user name is RicoDCG) I'm not very good at navigating the Website and the millions of options it has to offer. Okay, thanks again and Rdgs and Ciao for now...Rico.

Packed: Leon Spilliaert and the Public Domain[edit]

Dear JoJan,

I am Sam Donvil from an organisation called 'Packed vzw center for digital heritage'. We are an ngo that supports the Flemish and Brussels heritage and arts sectors with questions and projects related to digital heritage. An important part of our activity consists of convincing museums and archive to publish their digital collections online in a way that people are able to use them, ie. by providing them under a free license on platforms where people are already active such as the Wikimedia platforms (particularly Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata). In order to do this frequently collaborate with the Wikimedia Belgium community.

I am contacting you because we noticed that early on this year you added a reproduction of a Leon Spilliaert painting to Wikimedia Commons. Am I correct to conclude that you did this because you are aware that the artist entered the public domain this year and that you have a strong personal interest towards the public domain? At Packed we would like to connect more closely with the people in the Wikimedia community that are contributors and editors and find out what their interests are and what motivates them.

As you may know this year Victor Horta will enter the public domain. We are currently involved in the organisation of the 2018 public domain day in may for which we are convincing a maximum of institutions and individuals to contribute images of Horta exterior and interiors (if possible by organising photo tours) and in March we will put Horta related article creation high on the suggestion list for the [Writing Weeks].

The next Wikipedia writing session/photography drive we are organising is themed around the commune of Forest/Vorst in Brussels. For more info check out the Facebook page of the event.

If you like, feel free to write us a message explaining a bit what your interests are and what kind of activities could interest you: sam@packed.be

With kind regards, Sam

Armand Jamar[edit]

Dear, do you know who’s in possesion of the painting ‘Louis Dewinter’ by Armand Jamar. ( actually it’s not Louis, but his father Arthur, great great great grandfather of my children ). Please contact me at tomvh79@live.be Tomvh79 (talk) 20:51, 2 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This painting was sold at an art auction in Ostend, Belgium (Veilinghuis De Wit) at the end of March 2015. I only made the photo at the exposition beforehand. Perhaps you can inquire at info@veilinghuisdewit.be. JoJan (talk) 13:40, 3 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please consider adding iw-links here on Commons[edit]

Dear JoJan,

Thanks for creating new categories here on Commons as you did recently for Category:Conus darkini. It would be great if you could as well add the interwiki-link to the corresponding page on en-wikipedia by clicking here on commons in the sidebar menu under 'In Wikipedia' on 'Add links' and then putting in the appearing pop-up box the link to the corresponding article on en-wikipedia. This will add a link to commons to all language versions of the corresponding article on en-wikipedia. Moreover this will avoid the corresponding article to be included in the maintenance category en:Category:Commons category template with no category set.

Many thanks if you could consider to do so, indeed this would reduce my efforts on adding these iw links later through patrolling the pages listed on the pre-mentioned category on en-wikipedia. I would like to thank you for all the great work you are realizing on en-wikipedia and here on commons.

If you have any further questions on this do not hesitate to contact me.Robby (talk) 05:16, 25 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Creator credits[edit]

Hi. I've noticed that you've uploaded many works of art which you have listed as "own work"; perhaps this is because you were the one who scanned them in?

This is not what "own work" means. In this one, for instance - File:Léon Spilliaert (1920) - La Femme au Prisme 005.jpg - you are not the author. Léon Spilliaert is the author. And the work was not created in 2017, 71 years after Spilliaert died. You've done this a lot.

I'll go through your uploads and fix this; this is just so you can avoid doing this next time. DS (talk) 15:21, 14 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I've done this many times, because I made a photo (and not a scan) of this work of art; in this case the photo was made by me at an exhibition. And I always mention the name of the artist and other useful information. In order to give the photo its final appearance to be uploaded to the Commons, I've had to edit my original photo. I suppose this can be considered "own work". JoJan (talk) 15:57, 14 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

'I suppose this can be considered "own work".' No, it can't. That's not what 'own work' means. An accurate two-dimensional representation of a two-dimensional work of art -- scan or photo -- is considered functionally equivalent to the original work of art, for copyright purposes. It's extremely useful that you always include the original artist, the date the artwork was created, and the date that you took the photo, thank you, but you are not the original artist and it is not your 'own work'. Otherwise you could completely breach a living artist's copyright on their newest work by taking photographs of it and releasing those. You might want to check how the Google Art Project handles this sort of thing. DS (talk) 15:22, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@DragonflySixtyseven: I now realize the template {{Self-photographed}} would have been more accurate. Only the making and editing of the photograph is my own work and I never pretended otherwise. I only request to be given attribution as the photographer by whoever reuses this photo. Besides, the template {{Creator:Leon Spilliaert}} should be spelled {{Creator:Léon Spilliaert}} to be accurate. JoJan (talk) 13:53, 16 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I understand and accept that you never pretended otherwise; it's just that this sort of thing makes it much more difficult to keep track. As for whether or not there's an accent in the name of the creator template - I've renamed it, and left the accentless version as a redirect. DS (talk) 15:15, 16 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings, JoJan - I was wondering if you have the georeference (latitude/longitude) information for the subject photo. I do not see it listed in metadata list. Thank you, Greg (North Carolina, USA) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nchome1x (talk • contribs) 18:32, 19 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I took this photo several years ago. As far as I remember the coordinates could be very close to the following:
  • 51° 11′ 41.74″ N
  • 2° 55′ 51.68″ E

It could be about 100 meters off, but anyway it must be very close. You can find more information on (all in Dutch):

MNHN[edit]

Hello, I currently upload additional Mollusca images from the MNHN, I will likely upload other images reguliraly. Regards, Christian Ferrer (talk) 16:35, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I'm appreciating all the work you're doing. Can you upload these additonal images in a different category, so that I can easily distinguish them ? For your information: I'm currently working on the species beginning with the letter M. This whole enterprise is enormous, as I'm updating at the same time the articles in the en.wikipedia (or even creating a new article), also checking for the accepted name and also checking for categories in the commons and for links in wikidata. JoJan (talk) 16:52, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
All the images in Category:Collections of the MNHN (to be sorted out) are the images newly uploaded, I emptied the category a few days ago before to upload other images, therefore you can currently find them there. However there is potentially an issue, if after to have created the categories and to have added the relevant statement I remove the files from that category, you will not be able anymore to find that images. But I have a solution, below is a list of all the taxa categories added to the newly uploaded files, if you click on the red links you will access to the files. I can give you a such list each time I upload new files from the MNHN, it's easy for me, or I can each time add a hidden user category of your choice, e.g. Category:User JoJan (MNHN). As you wish. Christian Ferrer (talk) 18:26, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You can continue to add the categories to my talk page. As these links turn blue, I will remove them from my talk page. JoJan (talk) 15:55, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ok fine. Christian Ferrer (talk) 16:32, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Category:Conus karubenthos (the images of those specimens were already here as Conus eversoni, but have been identified as a new species after the upload here in 2020.): Conus eversoni is still an accepted species by WoRMS. JoJan (talk) 15:42, 9 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion warning

Naria (gastropod) has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Aya Parelduyker (talk) 09:00, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

--JoJan (talk) 15:04, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

the red chestnut trees with the golden lioness sculpture[edit]

Kind regards and thank you in advance, Anna Lalilubutterfly (talk)

ː This photo was taken a long time ago. But looking at the golden lioness sculpture, there is such a sculpture in the "Leopoldpark" in Ostend, Belgium, an old remnant of the town rampart around the city. Chestnut trees are a common feature in this park. ̴̴ --JoJan (talk) 13:51, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
