Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Hi, Lotje, I really haven't found anymore than the names. I got those from a website https://m.douban.com/photos/photo/2255513861/ that the owner appears to have copies or reprints of the magazine. Please note that published/unpublished is no matter since the copyright for paintings made in China depends only on the date of death of the painter. Hi Patrick Rogel, appreciate the clarification. I didn't know that paintings weren't included; I think the template might need to mention that distinction. My question going forward is that I have images of The Young Companion magazine from the 1930s which I intend to use to expand the article. The images show art (and sports and fashion and anything else you can make a photo spread about). Will these images also be off limits? Or is the version published as part of a magazine going to be ok, since they were already published with the artists permission? Hello, @Charlesjsharp: . I would agree there is only one short article’s worth of information. I was forced to create two articles because of Wikidata linking. Wikidata won’t let me link two different people to the same Wikipedia article, nor one link to a redirect. The effect is that only one is included in library identity catalogs and online searches. The identity of the two separate artists has been blended together everywhere I look, and Wikidata should inject information about the father into the catalogs of the world’s biographical databases. I would prefer a single article, but don’t see how to do that without shorting one of the two artists. If you have an idea, that would be good, because I don’t see the two article remaining separate in the long run.Jacqke (talk) 12:42, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jacqke: Thanks so much for your interesting note on this old image of mine. I had no idea about the name ‘’ghyaling’’ which, according to the Google Translate page means "healing" in Hindi. I have noticed that you have a real interest in Himalayan musical instruments - though I am not sure how wide your interests stretch.

Anyway, I have searched through the photos I have saved on my computer and saved 28 or so showing musical instruments in Himalayan regions, and would like to send them to you if they might be of any interest. If so, please send me your email address and I will send them to you as email attachments.

They are just snapshots I have taken on some of my travels. My wife, son and I lived in Dharamsala for a couple of years and we have travelled extensively in India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Tibet. Unfortunately, i wasn't particularly looking for musical instruments to photograph, and they are certainly not of professional quality. I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.

We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.

Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.
