Moving from en.wp

There is currently 115 000+ files in Category:Move to Commons Priority Candidates on en.wp: is there any bot working on transferring them? Huldra (talk) 23:53, 7 August 2016 (UTC)

Redundant template

A willing user created a nav template for each of the 50 U.S. states and attached it a bit everywhere in the categories related (even where it was not necessary... : ). In particular, in the categories: "people of XXXX county, YYYYY" has included the template "YYYYY counties nav" (where "YYYYYY" is the U.S. state) (see here for an example).

The fact is such template has become redundant because already included in the general template {{People of the United States by county}}.

A bot should remove from the subcategories of the 48 states subdivided in counties (except thus Alaska and Louisiana) the template "YYYY counties nav" (for the abovementioned case, Alabama counties nav). -- SERGIO ^{(aka the Blackcat)} 14:18, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

Hi, I uploaded images from the flickr user https://www.flickr.com/people/91314344@N00 using Flickr2Commons tool and now there is no way for me to track the uploads. Can all the uploads from this user be moved to Category:Photographs by Dinesh Valke? There are over 20,000 images. Is there a quick way? --Sreejith K (talk) 17:31, 21 September 2016 (UTC)

I enabled auto categories half way through the upload. So some of them have categories and some of them don't. Even for the ones for which the categories were automatically added, there are duplicates or redundant ones. We need category cleanup. Mass categorisation

Apparently, Flickr user gnuckx has now released a whole lot of his work under a CC-0 licence after previously releasing them under CC-by-2.0. A recent batch upload at Commons consisted of files with names that start with "License Free Photo - Creative Commons by gnuckx". I started adding these to Category:Files from gnuckx Flickr stream (CC-0) but the entire gnuckx portfolio may contain 3k+ images. Please have a bot seek out these files and put them into Category:Files from gnuckx Flickr stream (CC-0). De728631 (talk) 07:44, 7 October 2016 (UTC)

images.google url redirect cleanup requested

There is a spam issue with urls images.google.(tld)/imgres? which is exhibited at Special:Search/insource:"/imgres?". There has been a spam filter introduced that now prevents further additions at Special:AbuseFilter/154. It would seem time to clean up the old urls.

What will need to occur is extract the source component, so it would be a change something like

Also note that there is a rather high amount of copyvios with a Google result page as source. So I'm not sure whether a bot task is the best action. Many simple replacements needed

About 70 pages are transcluding the template redirect {{Wp}} instead of the template {{W}}. Because the template name «wp» is needed for another purpose, every occurrence of this name should be replaced: {{wp| ⇒ {{w|. The occurrencies are held in the temporary maintenance category Maint-template-wp; I had changed many transclusions by VFC and otherwise, but the remaining user talks, requests and archives cannot be accessed by VFC and its tedious to do it by hand. sarang♥사랑 13:23, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

spacetelescope.org URL changes

The website changed their URL structure and broke >250 links.

201 images link to it as source, all links are broken but could be fixed like that: spacetelescope.org/images/html/([a-z0-9]+).html -> spacetelescope.org/images/$1/
61 images also link to the image directly, pattern here: www.spacetelescope.org/images/large/ -> cdn.spacetelescope.org/archives/images/screen/ (changed subdomain and /archives/)

Comparison of file versions

Commons needs a bot which will find all overwritten images, download each image version for a file and check by color format, scheme how different are those images. An automatic log with results should be published somewhere on a public place here on Commons to let users analyze it for these files is needed a file_history split or to hide an older version. There are many cases when newly uploaded version of an image is absolutely different or unrelated to the old version. --XXN, 11:41, 2 December 2016 (UTC)

Duplicated PDF files

Seems that PDF files are not automatically detected by the system if they are duplicated. For them another algorithm is needed to compare 2 files and a live query on DB is not enough. According to Special:MediaStatistics currently on Commons are 314,122 PDF files. There may be many duplicates. At least, I found several which may be:

Could someone create a bot for identifying duplicated PDF files? For this task may be necessary for bot to download files and to compare their hashes. Adding a parameter to templates categorizing male / female people's categories

Hello, I've just unified the templates {{MenByName}} and {{WomenByName}} into {{PeopleByName}}.
In order to refine the categorization a bot should perform as follow:

to the categories that have either {{MenByName}} or {{Mbyname}}:
1. add |M as very last field of the template
2. eventually replace the string MenByName and Mbyname with PeopleByName.
to the categories that have either {{Wbyname}}, {{Fbyname}} or {{WomenByName}}:
1. add |F as very last field of the template
2. eventually replace the string WomenByName, Fbyname and Wbyname with PeopleByName.

According this and this discussion, those templates should be substed anyhow (by a bot). But please ensure that the Category:Men by name for {{MenByName}} and Category:Women by name for {{WomenByName}} don't get lost (which is currently the case). --Ju Ta 17:15, 23 January 2017 (UTC)

I think the easiest thing to do would be to just take Wikidata parameter and look up all this information there. Also this work seems a bit unnecessary, since if you want Commons categories for males or females you can just query the wikidata, start with this query. Add-on: your point is interesting, Jarekt, but what if the gender is different than Male/Female (i.e. intersex, transex, and so on)? Shall not the template categorize either in Men or Women by name? -- SERGIO ^{(aka the Blackcat)} 23:33, 24 January 2017 (UTC)

Gender is not binary for all people, so templates should probably also avoid it. But on the other hand, template:Creator never (to my knowledge) need to be set up for someone that was neither male or female. Chelsea Manning was in news a lot lately, I do not think Category:Chelsea Manning should be in male or female category. When I added gender to template:Creator it was for the purpose of proper grammar in some languages where occupation names conjugate differently based on gender. But the template does not have a visible field stating the gender. I do not see a pressing need to start sorting people into male and female categories, but I also do not oppose it. --Jarekt (talk) 04:04, 25 January 2017 (UTC)

Moving infos from category to description

(re-posted here after withdrawal of a bot operator)

We uploaded about 17,000 images from Paolo Monti Archive. We wanted to reuse as much infos as possible from the original catalogue, so we have a lot of categories to fix. We need in particular to tranfer a string from a category to the description. Most of images from Monti's Archive have an unexisting, long category. That category has those characteristics:

not existing (red)
shared only by an image (or few)
formed by words separated by periods (".") (not by "-" as the other original categories).

We need to trasfer that string (deleting the category) to the beginning of the description field.
Example: File:Paolo Monti - Serie fotografica (Anzola d'Ossola, 1966) - BEIC 6329139.jpg has a category called "Anzola d'Ossola. Riale. Alberi." (note the commas). The text "Anzola d'Ossola. Riale. Alberi." must be transferred at the very beginning of the description (deleting that category and leaving intact the other categories and the previous description).
A query made by Federico Leva shows we have about 7,000 categories of more than 75 chars that are used in less than 3 images (and 1,000 used in 2). I suggest to consider every red category with 20 chars or more and with commas between words. Thank you for your help. --Marco Chemello (BEIC) (talk) 20:59, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

@Avicennasis: Yes I think we can exclude categories with -hyphens and include only categories with periods. Seeing the dump, the lines 1 to 4 must be excluded, and all the others are ok to be worked. False coordinates

A set of Panoramio photos by Angela Stefanoni from Prague have false coordinates {{Location|50.087811|14.42046|source:Panoramio}}. Please remove the template with false coordinates (and add Category:Prague for uncategorized files instead).

Btw., all bigger sets of photos with identic coordinates should be detected and suggested for review. They can by OK if they are panoramics from any viewpoint (tower etc.) but suspected in other cases. --ŠJů (talk) 21:59, 30 December 2016 (UTC)

@BU Rob13: Thank you. Probably, some map (used by Panoramio users) has these coordinates as a definitional point of the whole city, i.e. none of them is a real location of the camera. Mass move .ogg to .ogv

Most users like separate programs to open audio and video files. Since the major file managers (Windows Explorer, OS X Finder, Ubuntu/Nautilus) use the extension to determine this, I would like the 7,157 files to be renamed from .ogg to .ogv extension. Wiki Loves Africa 2016

Hello

We have 480 files which have been uploaded as part of WLA, but do not include the overarching template because uploaders did not go through the dedicated upload system, but simply taggued their images as Category:Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2016 in CountryX (eg Category:Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2016 in Algeria). Our template is {{Wiki Loves Africa 2016}}. This template in particular include the category Category:Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2016. Since many uploaders did not use the template, the images are now not taggued with the general category.

For communication and for jury tool needs, we would like that all pictures be taggued, ideally with {{wiki Loves Africa 2016}} or if difficult to do, with Category:Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2016

We have established the list of images concerned by this problem : http://wikitagchecker.herokuapp.com. The download link provides a raw list (http://wikitagchecker.herokuapp.com/download).

Is there anyone (a bot) who could help us tag all those pictures ? Ideally with the template. At worse, with the category ? If not, any suggestion of how we could do ?

Upload of Ipernity files

Perhaps you know the photo sharing website Ipernity. More than 1,000 photos published on Ipernity under a free license have subsequently been uploaded to Commons. The number of free photos available at Ipernity is, of course, much larger (see here).

In December, unfortunately, the team of Ipernity announced that they will close down the site on January 31, 2017 (see here). The close-down date has since been changed to "late February" (see here). There are efforts going on to save the site, but I think it would be a good idea to copy public domain and Creative Commons content to Wikimedia Commons.

Unfortunately, I am not technically skilled to do something like that. I could only download photos from Ipernity and upload them to Commons on a one-by-one basis. I know it'll be a lot of work to get a bot moving (and to keep an eye on its movements), but can somebody here help? -- Robert Weemeyer (talk) 20:38, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

@Robert Weemeyer: I did have a brief look through the API (http://www.ipernity.com/help/api/methods) and the image collection in general. Though a mass import may be possible, I do not think this is an easy import for Commons as many images would fail to meet Scope for various reasons, and some may be copyright problems just as we see with Flickr. I suggest that on Ipernity discussion pages you push to have someone release version(s) on Flickr with matching licenses, or create an archive dump, or a passive mirror using something like wget, that others can take advantage of in the future. I have not tested overall size, but as you can push 1TB on to just one Flickr account, it would be reasonable to expect that all photos filtered by free reuse licenses could be released on one Flickr account.

Fix Exif time

PD-USGov Diffusion Bot

I'd like to request a bot to go through Category:PD US Government, and change the licenses on files to the more specific license tags when it can be easily determined. I'm talking about it changing the licenses on the files that have a source from one of over the 27 US Government Flickr stream (see Category:Government organisations on Flickr for lists), or images from an easy Federal Government source (af.mil, army.mil, navy.mil, etc). I'd also like it if the Flickr stream ones placed the images in the correct categories for the Flickr stream. @Elisfkc: I've put this on my backlog. There's not much more to doing this that deciding which searches to apply, but as I had to think about US-Gov licenses when I created COM:VIRIN, I probably have the right experience. As this would have to be cautiously done, there may be a large residue which are not all that simple to make sub-licensing decisions about.

I do not get your Flickrstream comment, I would hesitate to make assumptions about the source unless this was already explicit.

Try playing with Pywikibot. Even if you don't want to run Python scripts, you can do a lot from the command line. For example using mw:Manual:Pywikibot/movepages.py you can read in a text file of all the renames. As for 8 files per minute, it's a good throttle limit for something like mass moves, as if something starts going wrong, mass moves have the potential to cause disruption on many other projects. --Fæ (talk) 16:15, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

Import icons from The Noun Project

Hi

The Noun Project has 1000s of very clean, well designed icons, many of which are available under a Wikimedia compatible license. Currently only a very small number are available on Wikimedia Commons. They would be incredibly useful for outreach projects, publications, Wikiproject pages etc, I have used them widely on the Connected Open Heritage project. The site has names and categories for each icon and clear licensing, it also has an API. Would some kindly wizard be able to take a look at if it is possible to mass import them? I would be very happy to do grunt work.

{{PeopleByName}} was created after merging of two templates, {{MenByName}} and {{WomenByName}}. As a result, the categories using old templates ({{MenByName}}, {{Mbyname}} and {{WomenByName}}, {{Wbyname}}, {{Fbyname}}) have lost Category:Men by name and Category:Women by name. To fix this problem, someone with a bot should replace old templates in the above-mentioned categories:

Category:Videos needing subtitles fixes

A bot that can copy the transcripts from videos in Category:Videos needing subtitles that have them available on YouTube onto Commons, and replace Category:Videos needing subtitles with {{Closed cap}}. I have done so on some files (like File:1-15-13- White House Press Briefing.webm with Commons:video2commons, but it would be nice if a bot could try to do it for the 773 files currently in the category. 'Flickrbot' needed

I tag Flickr images from the Biodiversity Heritage Library Flickr feed with taxonomy tags. I've noticed that those tags don't migrate from Flickr into Wikicommons if the image has already been uploaded into Wikicommons prior to me tagging the Flickr image. I would like to request a housekeeping 'Flickrbot' to sync any Flickr tags added to the Biodiversity Heritage Library subsequent to those images being uploaded to Wikicommons. Can we use a bot to categorize uncategorized "FOP in Foo" discussions?

See what I mean here. Manually, this is thousands of pages. But the code is simple. Ex. search for text "in South Korea" , check if appropriate category (ex Category:South Korean FOP cases in this case) is present, if not, append. PS. I just went through 50 or so Korean FOP cases, there were just 2 false positives, and miscategorizing a few discussion pages shouldn't hurt anyone - on the other hand, having those pages categorized would make it easier to have discussion on the affect of FOP laws on free media, etc. Currently I'd estimate 50-90% of FOP deletions are not properly categorized. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus ^Talk 08:25, 18 April 2017 (UTC)

User:Hedwig in Washington is right, I am working on this issue, but it might take a while. I am also working on better version of Module:Creator with better maintenance categories. Within a week you should expect to see a more maintenance categories including categories flagging fields on commons but not on Wikidata ("Missing" data), fields with mismatching values between Commons and Wikidata and fields with identical "redundant" values between Commons and Wikidata. I will also have Category:Creator templates with Wikidata link: quick statements with creator templates which have data which can be transferred to Wikidata by clicking on . I could use some help with several smaller related tasks:

Grab one of the "Missing" categories from Category:Creator template maintenance and see if a bot can move some or all of the values to Wikidata
See Category:Creator templates with Wikidata link: item mismatching P19‎ and Category:Creator templates with Wikidata link: item mismatching P20 and see if some of the values can be reconciled
All or most templates from Category:Creator templates with authority control data should be matched with existing Wikidata items or new items should be created. This task was completed about a year ago but I guess those are new ones.

If anybody want to try some Lua, than I also have several unsolved problems related to Module:Creator. They are listed in the header of Module:Creator/sandbox and include things like like handling of "Alternative names" or better handling of "occupation" and "nationality". Emptying Category:Incorrect date

Comment this is potentially counterproductive, because many "wrong dates" can easily be corrected by humans, especially in case of typos, where the exact date is given in EXIF, see eg. [5] or [6]), or in case of really old images (see eg. [7]). but if a bot replaces any wrong date string only with the upload date (which is present, anyway), this causes loss of exactness, i think. Template:Taken on

There's a nice big category tree for photos by the date when they were taken (today's is Category:Photographs taken on 2024-04-29), and lots of images are in that tree, but some are there because the category's invoked manually, while others have it invoked by {{Taken on}}. Could someone write a bot to replace manual with the template, when applicable? I was imagining the bot starting with a database dump, finding the files with the manual coding, and doing the following with them:

Does the file transclude {{Information}}? If not, skip.
Is there a recognisable date in the template's |Date parameter? This is either the YYYY-MM-DD date or something else that's bot recognisable, e.g. "D month YYYY" as was fixed by a bot in this edit. If there's no date in the parameter, skip.
Is there anything else in the parameter? If not, go on; if there is, skip.
Is the date in the parameter identical to the date of the category? If not, mark with a template saying that something's wrong with the date, and human review is needed.
And finally, if the parameter has a date identical to that of the category, remove the category and replace the date with {{Taken on|YYYY-MM-DD}}

Tons of images should have this category added, but this isn't a good bot task because a bot can't distinguish between photos and non-photos, so this is the best we can do as far as I can see. Nyttend (talk) 18:52, 24 June 2017 (UTC)

I need that a bot add info from metadata to template already exist in a file. It is about files in Category:GPO (Israel) media without a digital ID. The id missing number exist in the file's metadata = "Short title" and starts with "D". The id number should be added to {{GPO Israel-image|id=}}. Replying to the ping, I'm not convinced these are all public domain with some being post year 2000. Considering there are greater than 10,000 files, and that they are PDFs, so to be reviewed in any detail, someone would have to page through each PDF to check for copyright statements, any analysis would have to take care to test the range of dates and publication types. It could be that a mass upload project can be set out which filters by date and/or publisher.

So, HiW is right, this is a GLAM project and the best next step for anyone pushing for these uploads is to take the time to set out a project page that explains how this works. Request for batch upload of images of Vietnamese cash coins.

I would like to request these bots to fetch all images and their related text from Ed Toda’s Annam and its minor currency, I really would like to do this myself only I have very little experience uploading files from public domain, and I have extremely little free time at hand and the images almost number in 300. 😅 Now I really wouldn't request this here if I thought that I had many other options so here it goes... The license that should be applied is “{{PD-old-auto-1923|deathyear=1941}}” as the book was published in Shanghai (though the writer is Hispanic ABD/and if it were published in Spain the copyright © would still be valid until 2022, but it completely falls outside of this in both Chinese, and U.S. American law).

Each file should contain at the author “Eduardo Toda y Güell (though Dr. R. Allan Barker, “the Qui-Gon Jinn of Vietnamese cash coins” hypothesises that Toda’s wife drew them)” (I put a part in there as I'm a joker 🃏), or on a more serious note “Eduardo Toda y Güell (though Dr. R. Allan Barker hypothesises that Toda’s wife drew them)” as the authorship isn't 100% known, while the source should list their appropriate page at “Art-Hanoi” a website operated by Sema (known on Wikipedia as @Pyvanet: ) for appropriate attribution.

The files themselves should all be named “Toda Nr.[number]” and then if possible their inscription in Chinese characters. The description below the files could be like exempli gratia title = “Toda No. 1. 太平興寶“ description is “Quote: “ (Barker: 1.6-1.16) Obverse: 太平興寶 Thai-binh-hung-bao. Reverse: The character 丁 Dinh, the name of the Dynasty.” - Ed Toda, Annam and its minor currency, 1882” Maybe again with a link 🔗 to the appropriate page. It should copy all the text until the next image, it should not any text before that chapter’s first image. Even long text should be copied as these illustrations mostly rely on their context.

The files should be made in a new category called “Category:Illustrations from Annam and its minor currency by Ed Toda” which in itself falls under “Category:Coins of Vietnam”, and “Category:Eduard Toda”.

I plan on using all of these in the Wikipedia article “Vietnamese cash”, so I do have an immediate usage for them. I hope that these ideas 💡 are plausible. 🙇🏻

Hello. I want to ask for the use of a bot to delete a duplicity in the categorization to change "Category:Azulejos of bla bla bla" and "Category:Azulejos in bla bla bla" by "Category:Decorated tiles of bla bla bla" and "Category:Decorated tiles in bla bla bla". Azulejos it's a Spanish and Portuguese word to talk about decorated tiles, because the decorated tiles with images are usually used in Spain and Portugal. But en Wikimedia Commons the categories are usually en English, so it can be better have the categorization with the term "decorated tiles". I have started moving "Category:Religous azulejos" to "Category:Religous decorated tiles", "Category:Azulejos of angels" to "Category:Decorated tiles of angels", and the categories wich was in "Category:Azulejos of Virgin Mary" to "Category:Decorated tiles of Virgin Mary". But it's too much work for just a person because there is a lot of categories of "azulejos" by subjects, countries, regions and cities. bot to add "convert to vector" template

Is there a way to get a bot to add the {{Convert to SVG}} template for category coat of arms? For example, the banned sockpuppet Songsblame (talk · contribs) uploaded 100+ of coats of arms in png format and they need to be in vector. There are other users through the years who have done the same. I'd like to get these all properly labeled so they can be found in one category and people who work on heraldry can tackle recreating them in vector. They invariably all have the word "arms" in the title. Do I have to add the template manually one by one or is there a bot that could be used to add {{Convert to SVG |1= coat of arms}} Thank you. HTTPS link upgrade for Geograph Britain and Ireland

About 4% of all images on Commons are from the Geograph Britain and Ireland project. There are therefore a large number of links to geograph.org.uk on image description pages. That website now supports TLS, so links can be upgraded from http:// to https://, surely an ideal task for a bot to work its way through slowly. An example page would be File:Bretforton_post_office_-_geograph.org.uk_-_803570.jpg, which includes a link to both the photo and the author profile page on geograph.org.uk. These URLs fit the form http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/[0-9]+ and http://www.geograph.org.uk/profile/[0-9]+ respectively and simple addition of an 's' in the protocol part accomplishes the change. Because there are too many? That's interesting because I understand most of those images were uploaded by a bot in the first place - a much bigger job than this text substitution. An edit every five seconds would get the job done in around three months, or cut that time down if it's ok to go for shorter intervals between edits. Is this not feasible? Another thing that may help put a dent in the size of the task: a large number of links to that site are likely to be from the protected template that we are waiting to be updated, dealing with many of them without the need to go through editing each page: {{Geograph/en}}. Cleanup Panoramio files needing categories

There are lots of files located in the child categories Category:Photos from Panoramio needing categories by date. Many of these have been categorized, so they need to be moved out of these categories. Ideally this should be done by the person doing the categorization, but for whatever reason people haven't been doing that step. Thus, it would be nice to have a bot remove the files from these child categories if they actually are categorized (criterion: at least one category that isn't hidden) on an ongoing basis. Category:Photographs taken on 2017-03-28 is not hidden (and should not be hidden) but an image categorized just in such one category should be dealed as uncategorized image. Replace "in countries" with "by country"

In the botanic taxonomic categories, categories "by country" were named non-standardly "in countries" since ca 2013. I corrected manually especially the top level of the current systematic categorization (Category:Flora by country by order) but there are hundreds subcategories of families, genera and species which have to be corrected too. Could be somebody willing to help with it by some bot?

Remove my complete name

Hello. I inserted my complete name, along with my Commons username, on each file I uploaded. This was done years ago and left as it is now. But, as I progressively saw the advantages of using pseudonyms for each thing I do, I think it's better to use my username, and not my complete name for credits. All the results for Commons flood the Google search results for my complete name...

Jason.nlw, forget it. Some of the file links don't work (slash vs hyphen), some of the replacing web links are identical to the ones to replace, many of the web links don't work. I fixed File:Nerth Y Gân - Gift Of Life, album cover.jpg and File:Welsh Male Voice Choirs Sing Hits Of The 60S & 70S, album cover.jpg by hand. The time you needed for to fix the entries of your spread sheet you should take to fix the links directly as I did. Btw, I don't think that a seller like http://sainwales.com/ has the right to (re)license all of the album covers, at least some of which are hosted at amazonaws, but maybe I'm wrong and all of them are of Sain labels (didn't look up all of them). --Achim (talk) 16:07, 28 May 2017 (UTC)

Purge a category

Could someone write a bot to purge Category:Self-published work of all the images that invoke the category directly? Until I edited it just now, File:Hansen Field.JPG was one such image. Replacing Template:Regions of France/sandbox by Template:Regions of France

Hello,
On January 1st, 2016, most of French regions were either merged into bigger structures or changed names. The Template:Regions of France was updated accordingly in a sandboxed version, Template:Regions of France/sandbox.
Consensus was reached on the Village Pump (Commons:Village_pump/Archive/2017/05#Template_Regions_of_France) to merge the sandbox into the main version, which was done by @Revent: .
Nonetheless, numerous categories and pages make use of the sandbox version and not the main one, which are now the same. Is it possible to have a bot refer to {{Regions of France}} categories and pages that refer to {{Regions of France/sandbox}}, and ultimately delete the sandbox version?

@Hedwig in Washington: The code now at Template:Regions of France is an exact copy of the code at Template:Regions of France/sandbox, and the replacement did not break the pages that used the old version of the main template (Category:Flags of Martinique, for example). More pages directly use the sandbox copy (9.7k) than use the main template (7.3k). All that is needed is a direct text replacement on all content pages, "Regions of France/sandbox" changed to "Regions of France". - Revent^talk 01:43, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

You don't need to delete the sandbox copy, it is highly probable that there will be other changes needed in some future that will be made in the sandbox again. The sandbox version had to be used in many categories only because the initial request (nearly 2 years ago!) to unblock the non-sandbox version was never heard even if it was requested multiple times. It was proven that the sandbox version was correct by the simple fact it had to be used in som many categories to refer to the new regions and handle the transition of category names. It hsould not have been so long to accept to copy the sandbox version to the non-sandbox one, given the huge tests that had been already performed successfully and the fact there was absolutely no compatibility problems.

user:Perhelion/massrename.js seems only for categories so I guess User:XXN/massrename.js shall be the choice (I think I saw something else but umm). It takes Strike Eagle 16 minutes to rename 97 files, and approximately 137 minutes to rename the rest. Replacement of template

Hello, I wish to have every remaining occurrence of {Month by year in Haute-Garonne} replaced with {Month by year in Haute-GaronneMP} so as to be able use {Month by year in Haute-Garonne} with the new region Occitanie instead of Midi-Pyrénées (defunct in 2016).

Category:Files with no machine-readable license

It seems that since some days every redirect resulted by a rename is shown up in this category. Currently we have about 9000 in it. I don't know whats wrong or how to fix it. But as a workarround it would be nice if a bot could do just a null-edit to any redirects within this category, which removed the entry for that redirect. Medeival against Medieval

Sorry, I'm fairly new at Wikimedia Commons, so I'm not sure if it's desirable to report such file name errors. I've found 324 files containing "Medeival" instead of "Medieval" (I can't find the word "Medeival" in any dictionary, so it's probably a misspelling). I've placed the list here: User:Fructibus/Errors#Medeival. If it's considered useful to rename them, then I can use the {{Universal replace}} template or whatever indicated form to make the list. Wiktionary is neither the best dictionary available, nor does it cover old spelling variations as I alluded to. If you are doing a transcription, even for book titles, then these spelling occur and should be used. I suggest you take a look through some old documents on IA. For example, instead of containing the character "–" (–), they contain the text "&-8211;". The same for three other characters:

There seem to three types of errors: space/underscore inserted after &, the HTML entity sent (both in decimal and hexadecimal), and for some reason &-226;&-128;&-153; which is the UTF-8 sequence e2 80 99 for U+2019 (Right curly apostrophe). Dispenser (talk) 03:06, 16 October 2017 (UTC)

Unmarked encoding

User:Achim55 notices some encoding without starting/ending marks. They're listed in User:Achim55/HTML entities. Basically, Å (U+00C5) would be the HTML entity Å . It also appears to replace all symbols with hyphens and converted everything to lowercase, so Århus / Aarhus Århus Sporveje becomes File:197rhus--aarhus-197rhus-sporveje-1007104.jpg.

The only approach I've got for fixing this: a dump of file names broken up by word boundaries, replace all 3-5 digit numbers with their decimal unicode character, match substitute against multilingual dictionary, and if its a real word add to good substitutes list. Build a report using the good substitutes list.

Migrate interwiki links to Wikidata

Now that we have {{Interwiki from Wikidata}}, it would be useful to migrate interwiki links from pages here to instead be generated from Wikidata, via an appropriate sitelink from Wikidata <-> Commons.

This has a number of advantages:

The list of links to other wikis on Wikidata is more likely to be maintained, and so may be more comprehensive.
Interwiki links will automatically reflect any merges or editing of the Wikidata items.
Better identification between Commons categories and Wikidata is useful in preparation for Structured Data, for understanding categories here, and for facilitating templates that can draw on Wikidata.
In particular, sitelinks are helpful for getting Wikidata-driven templates on Commons to work automatically.
It will no longer be necessary to make separate edits here and at Wikidata to link to a new wiki article in a new language.

In the threads on Commons Village Pump and Wikidata Project Chat last month, with the most recent numbers on links between Commons and Wikidata, there seemed to be support for the proposition that

a Commonscat should sitelink to a category item on Wikidata if such a category item exists;
but if such a category item does not exist, then it is entirely acceptable for a Commons category to be sitelinked to an article-item there.

That principle should clear up any remaining confusion and let us finally move forward in this area.

So:

If there is an existing sitelink to Wikidata, please remove interwiki links if they correspond to the interwiki links at Wikidata.
Also, if the sitelink goes to a category-item on Wikidata, and that item has a P301 "Category's main topic" statement pointing to a corresponding article-item, and that article-item on Wikidata has interwiki links, please remove interwiki links that match those from the category here.
In the latter case, please also make sure the category has the template {{Interwiki from Wikidata}}. If there are any remaining interwiki links here that are left over after that, please add a category to it, Category:category with unmatched interwiki links.
Also, if there are any interwiki links that do not match the interwikis from Wikidata, please add the category Category:category with non-matching interwiki links.
If there is a single Wikidata item with a P373 "Commons category" statement to the category here, please add a sitelink if one does not already exist, and proceed as above.
Similarly, if there are two Wikidata items with P373 "Commons category" to the category here, one from a category-type item, the other from an article-type item, and the two are connected by a P301 "Category's main topic" statement, please add a sitelink from the category here to the category-type item, dematerialise the local interwiki links as above, and make sure the category here has a {{Interwiki from Wikidata}} template.
Otherwise, if a Wikidata item can be identified from the interwiki links here, please add a sitelink and a P373 from it to the category here; unless it has a d:Property:P910 "topic's main category", in which case add a P373 to both items, but the sitelink to here from the corresponding category-type item.

Red flags:

If there are multiple Wikidata items with P373s linking here; or if the existing sitelink does not match the incoming P373; or if none of the interwikis match the interwikis on the Wikidata item; or if there is a category-type item and an article-type item to the category here, but no P301 "Category's main topic" statement connecting them, then please log this, and add the category Category:category with local interwiki links to the category here.
In some cases it may not be possible to sitelink, if the Wikidata item is already sitelinked to a Gallery page here. For such cases we probably need to have a general discussion about whether it is better to change the sitelink to the category here, relying on property P935 for the link from the item to the gallery; or to create a new category-type item, just for the sitelink.

Additional:

User:Jarekt has been going through some of the cases where there are multiple Wikidata items with P373s to a single Commons category here; he's recently c:Commons:Village_pump#Help_needed_with_mapping_categories_to_Wikipedia_articles asked for help, if anyone can assist with going through the back-log.
Also, in some cases interwikis here may not match P373s if there has been a change here, and the old P373s are now pointing to a disambiguation page or a redirect. In which case, please ideally update the P373s if there seems to be a clear candidate for where they should now point.

As this fits in with the pattern of controlling Commons content from Wikidata, and given how recent the mass removal of geo-coordinates was done without correct consensus, I'm minded to not invest my limited volunteer time writing a proposal. I do not fully understand the above technical request (it's not a proposal) so I doubt that others really will; certainly the case and ramifications for this project have not been made clear or pithy, and previous discussion is hard to follow and presumes lots of background reading to check the assertions. In the past I was the one that occasionally run interwiki update bot, but have not done so for last 5 years since Wikidata project started and everybody else migrated to Wikidata based interwikis. Remotion of text in files inside a category

Hello, if you open some files from Category:Mopars in the Park, June 2017, for example File:1970 Plymouth Sport Fury (34740240310).jpg, you will see a series of symbols ****, and those create spaces on the file description. Double category redirects

Several double {{Category redirect}}s (that is, where the target page contains a {{category redirect}} again) certainly exist: e.g. Dnipropetrovsk airport and Aircraft at Dnipropetrovsk airport. There is no Toolserver anymore and I don’t know how to learn how numerous are they. Can somebody care about it?

Thanks for the bot link, but one can easily check with edit histories that the Dnipropetrovsk_airport problem stands for 1½ years without any undertaking, and the second one for 11 months. While the bot fixes Category: pages in some circumstances (e.g. #REDIRECTs as far as I spotted), it certainly isn’t tasked with detection of {{category redirect | ↦ {{category redirect|…}}}} cases. Photographs by Joe Bielawa watermark removal

Need a bot to download, check if watermark exists, and remove the watermark, and overwrite old image without watermark, of all 2,500+ images in Category:Photographs by Joe Bielawa. The watermark is a solid white color and placed in the same position in every photo so it should be easy to identify and remove. The images in c:Category:Melodifestivalen 2018, Göteborg by Tarnic66 got the automatic numbering wrong, and should all be renamed Melodifestivalen 2018, Deltävling 2, Scandinavium, Göteborg, Name number.jpg. @Drongou: It's correct for File:Object_rotate_right.png! After turning 270° it has turned 90° from where it was. ;-)

@Jeff G.: These were uploaded with the upload wizard. When you enter the location in the wizard, it instantly warns you that "The longitude must be a number between -180 and 180." or "The latitude must be a number between -90 and 90." even before you've had a chance to enter the other value. So I suspect some users simply enter whatever the warning told them is the maximum. Of course, by that logic, some users would have entered the minimum the warning informed them about. Adding newly uploaded files to Category:Files with IMG-date-WA in filename

This is a request for somebody who has a bot running that checks all new uploads.

If the filename matches (anywhere in the filename, not just at the beginning) the following (not case sensitive):

@Schlurcher: These files are very likely (I haven't found any other reason so far) to have been transferred through WhatsApp at some point. This is a bit suspect so if concerns over a possible copyvio arise this can be an argument. There has also been a case where the (suspected) fact that the file was transferred through WhatsApp helped to determine it was likely a personal file, exactly as the description stated and not a professional model photo.

Also from what I have seen none of these have any kind of useful EXIF data. Sometimes people think this means the image was photoshopped or downloaded from a website, but in this case that's generally not true. No solution is needed for files that are already here - I will deal with those. - Alexis Jazz 18:01, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

I tested this a bit and technically this is possible and I could easily add this to my daily routine. The results look good as far as I see: [13] [14] [15]. However, my bot is not approved to add categories and anyhow I like some more community input on this task. @~riley: It also tends to be a good indicator other files from the same user need to be reviewed. Like the second example, I have no proof File:IMG-20180224-WA0022.jpg is copyvio. File:Iglesia San Pedro Apóstol Mengíbar.jpg has some kind of watermark, but I can't tell if it's just a description or a name. And if it's a name I don't know if that is the uploader. Not sure what to do with that. File:Torre de Mengíbar.jpg, also from the same uploader, comes from http://castillosupmjaen-carolina.blogspot.com/2012/09/jaen-tierra-de-castillos.html. - Alexis Jazz 21:58, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

~riley found the watermark so Iglesia San Pedro is also gone. And I think that one was also in use on Wikipedia, so not just some unused copyvio as we have many. This leaves only File:IMG-20180224-WA0022.jpg from this particular uploader. The other two images having been found on the web we should ask ourselves if we can trust the user to actually own this image that went through WhatsApp. We would have never (not anytime soon) found these if it wasn't for this category. - Alexis Jazz 00:05, 2 March 2018 (UTC)

I can do it, but it will be a pain in the butt because you have something like 40+ subcategories that my bot will have to recursively check before adding the category to it. You should not have your user category on non-personal subcategories, i.e. Category:NRC thumbnails. I would be glad to apply the tag to each individual file and then remove your tag from non-personal subcategories, THEN do all your uploads because it won't have to recursively check as many files. ~riley (talk) 16:49, 6 March 2018 (UTC)

Has the OP actually stated she is referring to this typo being in file names? Perhaps she means file descriptions? Regardless, this is quite a small job and I could pound the edits/moves out in the time it would me to write a custom bot script to do it.
