Category discussion warning

Památník sklářství (Kristiánov) has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Renaming Category:Diagrams about the COVID-19 pandemic in [...][edit]

a chart
a diagram

Hello ŠJů,

I'm writing to you because you were involved in generating the categories for categorizing COVID-19 related figures. I also created some of these categories back in the day, such as Category:Diagrams about the COVID-19 pandemic in Taiwan. However, looking back, I think that these category names are not accurate. If I – for example – look into the Category:Diagrams about the COVID-19 pandemic in Taiwan, there are actually 0 diagrams in there, but only (line) charts. And that is also the case for all other Diagrams about the COVID-19 pandemic in categories, they just contain line charts and some bar charts, but no diagrams. When I created the category, I thought that diagram and chart are the same thing, because in my native language, chart is translated as Diagramm. However, now that I know that this is not true, the category names appear confusing to me. Therefore I think that we should rename the Diagrams about the COVID-19 pandemic in categories to Charts about the COVID-19 pandemic in to reflect that they contain charts, not diagrams. What do you think?

Kind regards, Hbf878 (talk) 10:17, 19 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Hbf878: For now, the whole category tree of Category:Diagrams in Wikimedia Commons follows the concept used in en:Diagram and especially en:Diagram#Gallery of diagram types. It's a long-standing consensus in the last 12 years. It is possible that some people or people in some regions understand the word "diagram" primarily as a specific type of diagrams, but if we were to accept their concept, we would have to rebuild all related encyclopedic articles and the whole categorization structure from the top level in all category branches. Perhaps it is more appropriate to admit that the word "diagram" is also widely used in the broader sense as in the en:wiki article. We can create categories of "charts" as specific subcategories of categories of diagrams. However, I do not consider it necessary here, because statistics are presented in various types of diagrams. In the view of the English-language Wikipedia, so-called "Exploded view drawing" is only one of many types of diagrams. For the meaning you understand as the primary meaning of the word "diagram", we have the specific category tree Category:Exploded views (and also Category:Cutaway diagrams for a specific subtype). I assume that there will be very few such diagrams on the topic of the covid-19 epidemic, and therefore there is no risk of confusion. But in general, it is certainly appropriate to reflect that there are some people who are not familiar with the general meaning of the word and who understand the word "diagram" primarily (or even exclusively) as one of the specific types of diagrams. Btw., the word "chart" is also very ambiguous and it can be problematic to use it for some very specific meaning. A data chart is defined as a type of diagram. Somebody proposed also the term "infographics", but in many regions, this term means primarily pictograms, logos, navigation boards, traffic and security signs, brand liveries, etc., not data charts/diagrams. Any conflict between the general and the specific meaning of the word "diagram" would first have to be resolved in English wikipedia. At the very least, it is certain that the general meaning has been consensually accepted for 12 years. Its accidental and unsystematic disruption at lower levels is not a good solution. --ŠJů (talk) 10:55, 19 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, however, it seems that the conclusion of the Commons discussion did not deal with the arguments in the discussion and violated the consistency with the article on Wikipedia and with the current consensual and widely applied categorization practice, so the result will probably be more and more chaos. Unfortunately, the discussion was closed by a person who had a very strong and one-sided opinion in the discussion. On the English Wikipedia, some people failed to start discussion or reverse the existing consensus, which they don't accept. (@Timeshifter, Themightyquill, Jeff G., and Joshbaumgartner: ) --ŠJů (talk) 11:29, 19 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think you may need an RfC for this.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:34, 19 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@ŠJů: Which discussion are you referring to being closed, and by whom? The one you linked, Commons:Categories for discussion/2019/09/Category:Diagrams by subject, is still open as of the moment. I will admit that I bailed out of that early on as it seemed to go afield of the original proposal. The OP was simply to merge two categories, which as far as I can tell did not receive consensus to do as of yet. Maybe I am missing something here? Josh (talk) 13:27, 19 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Joshbaumgartner: I noticed the strange template {{Diagrams}} somewhere, interpreted as an "agreement at bottom of that discussion". Instead of a link to the opened discussion, Timeshifter massively promoted his own view and presented it as a consensus from that discussion. Ignoring all arguments from the discussion and misinterpreting quotations from dictionaries who support the view of the Wikipedia article. --ŠJů (talk) 19:59, 19 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ah... got it. I agree with you that it is quite inappropriate to substitute external references for a proper CfD consensus. Thanks for the additional information. Josh (talk) 14:28, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Joshbaumgartner, Themightyquill, Hbf878, and Jeff G.: For the time being, I have modified the wording of our colleague's template now to be in line with current definitions and current practice and long-standing consensus. It is certainly possible to discuss further, but Timeshifter's opinion that "expanded views" are the only type of diagrams and all other types of diagrams are not diagrams is IMHO completely groundless and indefensible. However, it is possible to take into account that for some group of people, the word "diagram" is known only in one specific meaning and they are not familiar and not reconciled with that general meaning, described in the en:Wikipedia article. Nevertheless, I am afraid that as an umbrella word for all types of diagrams, it is difficult to find a better word than "diagrams". It would also be useful to discover in the discussion how large and definable the circle of people share the Timeshifter's concept, and how it is possible that quite different definition has persisted in the English Wikipedia consensually for 12 years, and the colleague fails to enforce his definition there. I do not want to be an arbiter of English dialectology, but I would like no one here to cause confusion and chaos and break down the existing consensual categorization structure and conventions until another consensus is found. --ŠJů (talk) 14:50, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Timeshifter: The discussion was not closed yet, there is not clear consensus on that your template and it's massively disrupting longstanding consensus at Wikipedia and Commons and consensual definitions from en:Wikipedia articles, as was mentioned in this discussion too. --ŠJů (talk) 18:52, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Timeshifter: please leave ŠJů's description as it better reflects the fact that this matter is yet to be settled. Your characterization of 'diagram' having one specific definition that has been agreed to in the CfD is wrong, as that CfD is far from a consensus as of the present. Once the CfD has been resolved, if it does indeed match your narrow description, then it can be reflected on the template, but until then, {{Diagrams}} should be restored to this edit. If not thus restored, the template should be removed from categories covered by the CfD until the proper conclusion of the CfD. Josh (talk) 06:24, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Please stop edit warring. Multiple people (including 2 admins) agree with the template. User:Themightyquill, an admin who agrees with this template, and who initiated the category discussion, no longer wants to "merge Category:Diagrams by subject with Category:Information graphics by subject." That was his initial proposal (see the original proposal at the top of the category discussion). Instead he prefers this template. As I said this template agreement is a separate agreement. So no one remains who wants the initial category proposal passed.
Please continue discussion at Commons:Categories for discussion/2019/09/Category:Diagrams by subject where the discussion is ongoing concerning the template. --Timeshifter (talk) 13:18, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Timeshifter: Please stop your disruptive promoting your personal view, which runs counter to the long-standing consensus, the current structure of categories, and the definitions of terms as they are used in Wikipedia and Commons. If you have not been able to reach a consensus for such a major reconstruction, do not disrupt the project and respect the status quo. After all, even if your view were justified, it would have to be realized thoughtfully, not by guerrilla demolition of the current system and bringing chaos through meaningless "explanatory" templates. --ŠJů (talk) 13:28, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Reply to my talk page[edit]

Good afternoon ŠJů,

Thank you for informing me about all of the errors. I don't have the best grasp on the Czech language, I only really know English and German. I also didn't really have much of a way to fact check the Czech due to me not knowing any native Czechs, so apologies on that front. Many of the town names I just got from Google Maps and just used those spellings. But I'll correct them as soon as possible. If there's a better way of getting in contact (or if I even am messaging you right) please let me know! I'd greatly appreciate it. Cheers.

The Czech Republic vs. Czechia[edit]

Prosím nedělejte to!

To bychom pak ty mezijazykové odkazy museli zrušit, protože to není ekvivalent.
S pozdravem --Gampe (talk) 18:47, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
A zase mít třeba Boženu Němcovou zařazenou jenom mezi rakouskými říšskými spisovatelkami a ignorovat její příslušnost k českým zemím taky není moc šťastné (a s "Českou republikou" neměla společného nic).

Copyvia[edit]

Patrik L. (talk) 12:19, 6 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please do o not crop 360° panorama pictures[edit]

Please do not crop black bar above 360° panorama pictures (zenit) like in c:File:Neiße-Malxetal Pusack Aerial Pan360.jpg. The result would be, that panoviewer and other software could not work correctly. --PaulT (talk) 07:47, 25 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@PaulT: Hi. Thank You for your explanation. You can use some of the templates {{Border is intentional}} or {{Do not crop}} or create a special template for 360° panoramas with such bars, with this demand and its explanation. --ŠJů (talk) 07:55, 25 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the advice. I included it in the c:Template:Quad360, that was before in German only. The template now is autotranslating, please check. --PaulT (talk) 10:25, 25 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sníh a zima v okrese Náchod[edit]

Ahoj, opět díky za kategorizaci spousty mých souborů, jen mám dotaz, jestli je vhodné soubor File:Machov, státní hranice, hraniční kámen 01.jpg a další podobné zařazovat do kategorie „Winter“? Fotil jsem to přece jenom 30. dubna, takže mi to jako „zima“ moc nepřijde – prostě bylo chladné jaro, napadl tehdy sníh a vydržel do konce dubna (analogicky by mi nepřišlo vhodné řadit do zimních kategorií fotografie zasněžených alpských štítů někdy v létě). Fotil jsem to spíš jako takovou anomálii patřící spíš do kategorie Snow in Europe in April. Ostatně o den později a o dva kilometry vedle to vypadalo takhle. — Draceane talkcontrib. 12:49, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

OK, to mi asi dává smysl.

Category moves[edit]

Hi ŠJů. Please do not move UK categories to US spellings, this is not helpful. These categories are used mostly by UK users, who use UK spelling and who view the US spelling as an error when applied in the UK. I have moved them all back to the correct UK spelling and would appreciate it if you left them as they are, where UK users can find and use them without problems. Many thanks, Simon Burchell (talk) 09:55, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Simon Burchell: Hi Simon. See Commons:Categories#Universality principle. Category names are not intended to be a festival of dialectology. Local dialects or languages or original local names, spelling or terminology can be taken into account in proper or stable names for categories of individual subjects, but systematic categories requiere systematicity. You can open a dispute about choice or preference of English or US spelling in the corresponding root category if you think it has not yet been satisfactorily resolved. Commons massively uses redirects for cases someone can search for a topic under a different name. --ŠJů (talk) 10:14, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
We are hardly talking about a festival of dialectology. As a rule of thumb British/Commonwealth English should be used for those categories which deal with British/Commonwealth subjects, this is already well established. Simon Burchell (talk) 10:36, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Simon Burchell: The rule of universality says that the same item should use the same name for all countries, and that name should follow the name of the root category of the item. As regards categories of individual subjects and their proper names, local dialects or languages or original local names, spelling or terminology can be taken into account. --ŠJů (talk) 10:55, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
What rule of universality? Do you have a link for this? Simon Burchell (talk) 10:59, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Couldn't find the link above? Commons:Categories is considered an official policy on Wikimedia Commons, and naming universality is even mentioned among the five basic principles. IMHO this one is maybe the most unambiguous and easiest to understand. Sorry, but if you do not agree with the basic principles of categorization, it is not I who should defend them against you, even though I basically agree with them and consider them practical and useful. Personally, I don't prefer English nor US spelling, but above all it must be the same for all countries as for the root category. If you do not agree with the Commons policy or with the name of any root category, initiate a discussion at the appropriate place.

Pomůžete mi to prosím Vás změnit?

S pozdravem a díkem Fry72

--ŠJů (talk) 19:21, 30 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Díky moc, pokusím se zlepšit i v názvech souborů. Fry72

--ŠJů (talk) 19:53, 30 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

We need your feedback![edit]

Hello. Apologies if this message is not in your native language: please feel free to respond in the language of your choice. Thank you!

I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.

We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.

Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.

Also, if you want to keep in touch with us or you want to know more about the project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.

Hope to hear from you soon! -- Sannita (WMF) (talk to me!) 09:57, 2 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Request for help with Category:Requested moves[edit]

Closing CFD Commons:Categories for discussion/2020/02/Category:Requested moves (Donbass)[edit]

Sorry for spamming. I know you are busy, but because of your massive and very valuable contributions for moving requests stuff, I remind Commons:Categories for discussion/2020/02/Category:Requested moves (Donbass). Technically, I can close it, because two weeks has passed. The closing of this CFD means to liquidate group-section from Category:Requested moves. After closing two technical changes will be implemented:

  1. Template:Requested moves #group-section to be liquidated
  2. Template:Move #group-section to be liquidated

You don't need to answer for this comment. Just a professional courtesy to inform you. --Estopedist1 (talk) 14:38, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Generally, the maintenance categories can be deleted if they are not used, and they can be created again as soon as some rename request of that type appear and it would be useful to group them together. In general, the status of Donbas (Donetsk and Luhansk republics) will not, in fact, be resolved immediately. The discrepancy between the factual situation and the theoretical situation under international law still persists. We do not seem to have resolved the question of how the Commons language policy should be treated in relation to disputed or internationally unrecognized or occupied territories. --ŠJů (talk) 22:14, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
there is no need to group Requested moves. If there are eg 5 Japan-related, or 5 Donbass-related, or 5 Hebrew-language related, or 5 Medicine-related requested moves, then we wait 2 weeks, and if no one is able to solve them, then we open CFDs. As you see, CFDs are not grouped by topic, why should Requested moves be grouped by topic? To me, it is just redundant clutter for Category:Requested moves--Estopedist1 (talk) 16:21, 25 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Estopedist1: CFDs are not just an example of a functioning and effective system. Moving a proposal to the CfD usually means resigning to its solution and leaving it to endless chatter. However, to group several proposals related to one problem into one group makes sense not only for experts and those interested or acquainted in the given problem to focus on it, but also to open just one centralized CfD about that problem. When a series of related rename proposals is created, it is always useful to group them together from the beginning. --ŠJů (talk) 21:07, 25 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It is strange. I am fulfilled 500+ moving requests, and I don't see no necessity to create ad-hoc and subjective categories to contain similar requested merges. Enwiki Category:Requested moves also support my view. As for CFD stuff, then I admit that we should somehow become more efficient. In enwiki, CFD stuff works brilliantly, and I am not aware how is it so efficient in enwiki--Estopedist1 (talk) 08:32, 26 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I also want to add, that if two weeks are passed, and we have eg 10 difficult mathematics-related renaming requests, then after opening one CFD, we can collect them like here is done Commons:Categories for discussion/2018/09/Category:Kepler-Poinsot solids; Baelde style; 3-fold. And no need for ad-hoc "Category:Reguested merges (mathematics)"--Estopedist1 (talk) 12:23, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Could you explain what you mean by "lampion"?--Kai3952 (talk) 07:51, 19 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Kai3952: As I can see, you've already found some explanations. However, the English translation "small oil lamp" is not very fitting. It does not matter that it is an oil lamp or not. What is characteristic for them is the decorated paper shade made of colored folded paper. Alternatively, some modern material (rubber or plastic) that mimics this look. Inside may be a candle or an electric lamp. The word is translated as "Chinese lantern" or "paper lantern". See Wikidata:Q9545439, at least 10 (European?) languages use the word "lampion" for this style of "paper lanterns". Paradoxically, Italian is not among them, although it is Italian that this locally-international word comes from. It is debatable whether the parent category "paper lanterns" can be considered as a synonyme (and the categories merged), or "lampions" are a specific type/style(s) of paper lanterns. It can be said that the word originated as a European name for European lanterns that have been inspired by Chinese-style paper lanterns, but in Europe, we use the word also for real traditional Chinese paper lamps. In the Eastern-Europe bloc, "lampions" (most often of this type or similar) were promoted for the autumn celebrations of the Russian communist October Revolution. That is why they are perceived more as a Russian, communist, totalitarian affair. However,in this way, the word became widely known here. Today, the context is different, but similar lanterns are occasionally used for other autumn celebrations - Halloween, Sant Martin Day, various local anniversaries etc. --ŠJů (talk) 13:38, 19 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Debatable? But in my eyes, it doesn't have any unique or distinguishing features. Could you please point out a few examples?--Kai3952 (talk) 16:38, 19 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kai3952: Common words are usually not sharply defined, but have some prototypical core of meaning. However, if we have two or three words of similar meaning, one of which is probably broader and one narrower, we cannot distinguish them by the core of meaning. Maybe, not all "paper lanterns" need to be "Chinese-style paper lanterns", not all paper lanterns need to fall under the word "lampion", not all lampions are made of paper. For simplicity, we can merge the two categories for the time being, although we must assume some distinctions. It is common that a general term in one language may have a slightly shifted meaning from its equivalent in another language. Even the same word can change its meaning when borrowed into another language. Someone who is familiar with the relevant languages in which these words are used can debate and compare this. --ŠJů (talk) 01:09, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Kai3952: You were the one who asked me for an explanation. Of course, I couldn't tell you more than you would be able to find out for yourself if you were interested in finding out something. As I have already written, I have nothing against merging those categories, although the terms may not exactly overlap. --ŠJů (talk) 15:32, 23 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open![edit]

2022 Picture of the Year: Saint John Church of Sohrol in Iran.

Read this message in your language

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

File:Újezd, Milíčov, rybník Homolka.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Category:Parts of a day category move discussion[edit]

Back in 2009 and 2010 you edited this category. I would like to move it to the usual English term. Do you have any strong opinions that you can share in the discussion? -- DanielPenfield (talk) 14:51, 4 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Skryté kategorie CWP 2023[edit]

Ahoj,

Richard Sekerak (WMCZ) (talk) 12:24, 7 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Richard Sekerak (WMCZ): Ahoj. Soutěže by neměly narušovat standardní chod a pravidla projektu.

Hezký den, je Category:Former monastery in Česká Skalice možno sloučit s Category:Chateau in Česká Skalice?

Jde o klášter poměrně novodobý a krátkodobě fungující.

Vlaky v Praze[edit]

To, co v těchto kategoriích je, bych přesunula pod Vámi doporučenou "Railway lines in...".
Tohle šlo celkem rychle a nebylo to složité. --ŠJů (talk) 14:07, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
