Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Images from Nordiska Museet

Haxpett, i think in renaming the images from the Nordiska Museet, because a name like NMA.0023952.jpg isn't very descritive :) My problem is: I rename the file to "Hur långt ha vi fram?", "NMA - Hur långt ha vi fram?" or "Nordiska Museet - Hur långt ha vi fram?" (or maybe other name?)

Could you help me?

I asked User:Nordiskamuseet (via e-mail) and the answer is that it would be convenient to have the numbers left somewhere in the name. But since the images are PD they realize that the names can change and there is nothing they can do about it. WLM Mobile login problems

Hi Axel, we couldn't login with the WLM app to upload photo's. Do you have some more info so we can debug this? Multichill (talk) 19:16, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

Well, it seems to be working now. No changes made from my side (that I know of) and I don't think I've updated the WLM-tool (if it's not done by it self). Maybe the wifi at the museum didn't like my phone or something like that. /Haxpett (talk) 14:49, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

@Jcb: Sorry, maybe I should have asked for an undelete of the image instead. On the other hand the image is clearly marked as CC BY here and Patrick Rogel removed the request for OTRS when I replied two sections up on this page. Is a request for undeletetion here enough or should I use Commons:Undeletion requests to get the image undeleted? /Haxpett (talk) 23:05, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

@Jcb: But as the licence (CC BY) is available at the source there is no need for an OTRS, and as Patrick Rogel removed the request for OTRS based on my reply mentioned above I think the image is all good to go. The license at source is non-specific (not all CC licenses are valid here, please see COM:L) and there is no indication that the photographer agrees with the license. Many people somehow erroneously think that they are the copyright holder of pictures depicting them. Please contact OTRS. Jcb (talk) 23:56, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

(Last I checked) Mynewsdesk only allows version 3.0 (just as Flickr only allows 2.0). It is weird that they have removed the license number from displaying, but in settings for users, they can only select 3.0 as a version. However, MND is riddled with companies commiting license laundering, since in some cases they are not the copyright owner to their images. --Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 19:36, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

Att P180, eller inte?

Hej! Vill höra dina tankar om vad som bör finnas under depicts (P180). Som jag förstått det bör landområden, t.ex. Lisberg, Skeppsholmen, eller naturreservatet Hundhagen, endast finnas under P180 ifall det är en flygbild. Är bilden tagen inne på Liseberg sätter jag det som location of creation (P1071) istället. Hmmm, bra fråga. Jag har nog inte tänkt jättemycket på det utan använt P180 då den kommer först och verkar rimlig, men har inte läst hela dokumentationen. P1071 verkar dock gälla mer var det avbildade objektet är tillverkat snarare än var fotografiet är tillverkat/taget, så den tycker jag inte är riktigt passlig heller. Du får gärna lyfta det på lämplig bybrunn eller diskussionssida så att fler insatta får vara med och förklara eller tycka. Jag har ingen bestämd åsikt i frågan, utan rättar mig efter hur det ska vara. /Haxpett (talk) 10:17, 20 May 2023 (UTC)

Hej! Min tolkning av Commons:Structured data/Modeling/Location är att location of creation (P1071) ska spegla "Where the photo was made". Föreställer bilden t.ex. en öppen spis i ett vardagsrum sätter jag P1071 till kommunen eller orten där vardagsrummet finns. -- LevandeMänniska (talk), 10:34, 20 May 2023 (UTC)

Tack, det verkar ju helt klart rimligare att läsa dokumentationen på Commons för SDC än att försöka tillämpa Wikidatas modellering. Jag ska tänka på det vid kommande uppladdningar. /Haxpett (talk) 11:02, 20 May 2023 (UTC)

Man kan inte tänka på allt, och vi finns ju här för att hjälpa varandra. Mycket av dokumentationen kring SDC är under uppbyggnad, men de "stora" egenskaperna känns någorlunda spikade. -- LevandeMänniska (talk), 11:12, 20 May 2023 (UTC)

Hejsan! Snubblade över tre bilder (1, 2, 3) du tagit på S/S Flottisten. Ser att bilderna även har en mall som länkar till Sågmyra Hembygdsmuseum (Q28933271), och undrar bara hur de hänger ihop eftersom arbetslivsmuseet inte syns på bilderna? -- LevandeMänniska (talk), 18:46, 23 October 2023 (UTC)

@LevandeMänniska Meh, komma på mig när jag har slarvat och klippochklistrat fel eller nånting sånt. Flottisten och Sågmyra har förmodligen inget annat gemensamt än att bilderna togs under samma fotosafari runt Leksand 2018. Flottisten är städad nu och det ser inte ut att vara några andra än arbetslivsmuseerna vi besökte under turen som har kvar mallen nu.
