File was subsequently deleted, I appealed given it was appropriately licensed by the institution holding the copyright (ie New Zealand Royal Society) and only hosted by the National Library of New Zealand. Hi Ambrosia, I have seen your work a number of times on NZ invertbrates and thought you may be able to help.... I have begun a page on [[1]] on wikipedia and found a [image] at Landcare. I see you have uploaded many of their images. I have an email permission to use it, but am now stuck! I'm not sure how to get Landcare to change the status to a useable one for wikimedia. Two new people have been hired for the Structured Data on Commons team. We are now complete! :-)

  • Ramsey Isler is the new Product Manager of the Multimedia team.
  • Pamela Drouin was hired as User Interface Designer. She works at the Multimedia team as well, and her work will focus on the Structured Commons project.

  • We are still welcoming (more) staff from GLAMs (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) to become part of our long-term focus group (phabricator task T174134). You will be kept in the loop of the project, and receive regular small surveys and requests for feedback. Get in touch with Sandra if you're interested - your input in helping to shape this project is highly valued!
Research

Design research is ongoing.

  • Jonathan Morgan and Niharika Ved have held interviews with various GLAM staff about their batch upload workflows and will finish and report on these in this quarter. (phabricator task T159495)
  • At this moment, there is also an online survey for GLAM staff, Wikimedians in Residence, and GLAM volunteers who upload media collections to Wikimedia Commons. The results will be used to understand how we can improve this experience. (phabricator task T175188)
  • Upcoming: interviews with Wikimedia volunteers who curate media on Commons (including tool developers), talking about activities and workflows. (phabricator task T175185)
Development

In Autumn 2017, the Structured Commons development team works on the following major tasks (see also the quarterly goals for the team):

  • Getting Multi-Content Revisions sufficiently ready, so that the Multimedia and Search Platform teams can start using it to test and prototype things.
  • Determine metrics and metrics baseline for Commons (phabricator task T174519).
  • The multimedia team at WMF is gaining expertise in Wikibase, and unblocking further development for Structured Commons, by completing the MediaInfo extension for Wikibase.

I have sent 2 emails to the permissions-commons@wikimedia.org with a screen shot of the image from the source url showing the image with the license. Sent a second email to permissions-commons after discovering this confusion regarding the licensing of the work resulted from the CC BY 4.0 license not appearing automatically when the source url was followed and the image was clicked on. Explained that I had notified this issue to the owner of the images ie Landcare Research New Zealand Ltd. Landcare Research explained that there appeared to be an issue with the "lightbox" used to display the images and the javascript code used to ensure the license was visible with the image when it was displayed on their website but not downloaded with it. They reassured me via a DM on twitter that they intended to add a general CC BY 4.0 license to the source page header but that this may take some time. Landcare Research also responded to Wikicommons twitter feed giving this reassurance. see this --Ambrosia10 (talk) 23:29, 31 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I think problems are solved. Would you please add {{LicenseReview}} to your uploads from Landcare Research New Zealand Ltd.? Then a license reviewer will mark you images as reviewed. I have done so for a few hundred images already (e.g. File:Eudonia leucogramma male.jpg mentioned above), but I noticed that you have uploaded new ones.   • We started preliminary work to prototype changes for file info pages.
  • Work on the MediaInfo extension is ongoing (T176012).
  • The team is continuing its work on baseline metrics on Commons, in order to be able to measure the effectiveness of structured data on Commons. (T174519)

Wikidata Infobox[edit]

Hello Ambrosia10, please do not add Wikidata infoboxes to taxon pages that have already taxonavigation templates. See Commons talk:WikiProject Tree of Life#Wikidata Infobox and taxons for more info. Thanks, --Thiotrix (talk) 09:25, 21 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I would be grateful if you would explain to me why the Wikidata infobox markup should not be added. It appears to me that doing so adds extra information to the taxon page. The discussion you have pointed me to seems to be a discussion with just a few (I'm sure knowledgeable and hardworking) editors. But is this a consensus of the whole community? I don't see the harm in adding extra information, especially if it brings to light inconsistencies. I will of course be happy to consider your request if you could go into further detail concerning your and other editors objections to adding a Wikidata infobox. Behind the scenes, back-end work on search is taking place and designs are being drawn up for the front-end. There will soon be specifications published for the use of the first Wikidata property on Commons, "Depicts," and a prototype is to be released to go along with that.

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2017 is open![edit]

Dear Ambrosia10,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2017 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the twelfth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2017) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top 2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2017.

Round 2 will end on 22 July 2018, 23:59 UTC.

  • The info portal on Structured Commons now includes a section on GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums).
  • We are currently planning the first GLAM pilot projects that will use structured data on Wikimedia Commons. One project has already started: the Swedish Heritage Board researches and develops a prototype tool to provide improved metadata (translations, data additions...) from Wikimedia Commons back to the source institution. Read the project brief.
  • The documentation for batch uploads of files to Wikimedia Commons will be improved in 2019, as part of preparing for Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons. To prepare, the GLAM team at the Wikimedia Foundation wants to understand better which types of documentation you already use, and how you like to learn new GLAM-Wiki skills and knowledge. Fill in a short survey to provide input!

Structured Data - file captions coming this week (January 2019)[edit]

My apologies if this is a duplicate message for you, it is being sent to multiple lists which you may be signed up for.

Hi all, following up on last month's announcement...

Multilingual file captions will be released this week, on either Wednesday, 9 January or Thursday, 10 January 2019. Captions are a feature to add short, translatable descriptions to files. Here's some links you might want to look follow before the release, if you haven't already:

  1. Read over the help page for using captions - I wrote the page on mediawiki.org because captions are available for any MediaWiki user, feel free to host/modify a copy of the page here on Commons.
  2. Test out using captions on Beta Commons.
  3. Leave feedback about the test on the captions test talk page, if you have anything you'd like to say prior to release.

Additionally, there will be an IRC office hour on Thursday, 10 January with the Structured Data team to talk about file captions, as well as anything else the community may be interested in. Date/time conversion, as well as a link to join, are on Meta.

Structured Data - blogs posted in Wikimedia Space[edit]

There are two separate blog entries for Structured Data on Commons posted to Wikimedia Space that are of interest:

  • Working with Structured Data on Commons: A Status Report, by Lucas Werkmeister, discusses some ways that editors can work with structured data. Topics include tools that have been written or modified for structured data, in addition to future plans for tools and querying services.
  • Structured Data on Commons - A Blog Series, written by me, is a five-part posting that covers the basics of the software and features that were built to make structured data happen. The series is meant to be friendly to those who may have some knowledge of Commons, but may not know much about the structured data project.

Kia ora. I am working with the National Library of New Zealand to try and differentiate between photos of Amy Kirk and her younger sister Lily May Atkinson - and we've determined that the photo you used (that was originally labeled as Lily) is very likely that of Amy. I'd like to switch out the portrait associated with Lily's bio, but wanted to alert you first of this new information. If you click through to the original version on the Library website, you'll see that they've already updated the information there.
