Requesting assistance identifying one of your files.

Greetings. It appears you posted File:2011-365-299 Dropping Book Debris (6285472376).jpg. While your description "It's dangerous, very dangerous" is quite humorous, it does not help us identify where the picture was taken. Could you please assist us? Thank you. LibraryGeek (talk) 19:00, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

According to the EXIF, it was taken in Blacksburg. Other photographs on Flickr may give a clue. -- (talk) 22:10, 1 January 2019 (UTC)
Thanks much. Most files don't include geo info in the EXIF, but this one did. Sorry I overlooked that. Thanks for your help. LibraryGeek (talk) 23:08, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

Hey Fæ,

What is the purpose of this category? -- 1989 (talk) 15:39, 3 January 2019 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @1989: they should be reviewed, and given that there are 26,731 files in that category, preferably by a bot.. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 18:57, 3 January 2019 (UTC)
No, these have already had perfectly good housekeeping. A faux review by bot would be meaningless by definition. As the pointlessness of license review, when the license was precisely and accurately checked at the time of upload has been discussed at length, it's time to drop that stick. -- (talk) 11:42, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
The category does what it appears to do, it is used as a backlog for the batch upload that require human eyes to take a look and decide if they are sufficiently categorized, well titled, or have some copyright problem that Unsplash ignored. I know you have targeted some of these for OOS based deletions, that seems a waste of time considering every one of these files were considered valuable on Unsplash in terms of photography quality and illustrative value. -- (talk) 11:42, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
I see. I don't plan on nominating those images for OOS anymore. If this isn't for license reviews, does it need to be part of the backlog for COM:LR? -- 1989 (talk) 12:31, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons Vs. Categories

I saw you post something somewhere (I should keep track) that you stated that you don't think that the Wikidata model for Wikimedia Commons will be successful and that "traditional categories" will remain dominant. I found it "Consensus for flat categories = Flickr style tags = something magic and undefined from structured data / wikidata" and honestly I'm curious how you would want to organise all the files on Wikimedia Commons if you would build this platform from the ground up, especially with GLAM's in mind. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 23:33, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

As far as I am aware, there has been no credible testing or design work for a syntactical labelling of Commons images. It is not an easy problem to solve, or to get the community engaged with it. I simply do not believe in it based on the pretty bad track record of how Wikidata stuff has been cack handedly forced on Commons to date. As I have previously proposed, and got the standard WMF brush off,
Commons would have benefited from a simple tab system in addition to hierarchical categories. However this does not have the funding or faux centralization incentives that a Wikidata solution has, so it will continue to be ignored in preference for anything with Wikidata in the title. -- (talk) 11:51, 14 January 2019 (UTC)
How about a hashtag system like many image sharing websites have? I was thinking of proposing something like that. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 16:07, 15 January 2019 (UTC)

This matches the catalogue entry, so should be fine. I checked to see if there was a better scan, but could not find one. I suspect that the original is probably easier to read Grenier's signature and if there was a colour scan that may make a difference. -- (talk) 09:34, 15 January 2019 (UTC)

Is it fine for all this to be deleted by Flickr in a couple weeks? Was it all imported here already? https://www.flickr.com/photos/wikimediacommons/albums Nemo 18:52, 15 January 2019 (UTC)

Most of it came from here. Stuff like the Wellcome AIDS posters that were deleted from Commons are available at the Wellcome site as NC. PAS

After seeing an all rights reserved image in this batch upload, I have put a pause on the rest of the uploads. After some analysis it should be safe to restart, but this will probably be after Christmas. -- (talk) 23:50, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

Wayback links are being added retrospectively. Restarting fresh uploads will have to address the possible copyright check issue, which may be about which level of metadata is being examined, and integrate the Wayback link generation. -- (talk) 01:35, 6 January 2019 (UTC)

Vinkhuijzen Collection

Dear Fae, I am curious to know more about the processing of the Vinkhuijzen Collection. This nice collection totalls well over 30,000 images, but a large part of the images in this collection on Commons needs rotating. I have rotated a few thousand so far (assisted by Rotatebot) and will continue to work on the several thousands of images (>5,000?) that still need rotation, but I was wondering if these mistakes were documented somewhere -to prevent the same faults happening again with new uploads, or to know if similar repair actions on this collection were already planned. Vysotsky (talk) 17:14, 17 January 2019 (UTC)

There is no way of automating this as far as I know. If the source displays drawings at an angle, then it takes human eyes to work out what needs to be done to display it better.
Note this was a fairly old upload which I am not planning on refreshing unless there is a request. -- (talk) 03:40, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
When uploading large collections with images wrongly displayed or with other mistakes, it would be nice to add a category like "Category:Images uploaded by Fae needing correction" (or similar text). Commons needs an overview of pollution in order to be able to clean up. Did you upload any other collections with comparable issues in the past? Vysotsky (talk) 12:52, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
There are several like this, for example the book plate uploads from the internet archive where I have created specific automatic maintenance for rotation categories, though even in that example there is no automatic way of detecting files which need rotation. See Category:Files from Internet Archive Book Images Flickr stream
In theory, you could use Category:Internet Archive (90 degree rotation needed)‎ if adding categories using catalot would be simpler than adding the rotate template yourself. From memory there is no technical reason that Faebot would not process the image even though it is part of a different collection. -- (talk) 10:25, 20 January 2019 (UTC)

User:Faebot/SandboxP

Fae, I'm trying to clear out some of the sample images from User:Faebot/SandboxP, but a few that don't need or otherwise warrant a Pixabay template keep getting automatically re-added. What's going on here? Huntster (t @ c) 03:29, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

It relies on a search, then a check of the first line of the source parameter. Interestingly, the general search returns some images that, to my eyes, appear to have nothing to do with pixabay.com despite this being a non-fuzzy search. There are various ways this can pick up images as 'No source' which have been 'fixed' but in more complex ways than this simplistic detection can understand.
Anyway, I have just turned off this housekeeping task as it was looping around the same errors. Changes you make from here on to the sandbox manually should stick. I do not believe it's worth running this pixabay specific WBM task again, so I'm not planning on adding any more intelligence, like skipping files mentioned in the edit history of the sandbox...
Thanks for your efforts. -- (talk) 03:37, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
Gotcha, makes sense. Thanks for all your work! Huntster (t @ c) 04:13, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
I finished checking the files on your sandbox page. If you need the page deleted or otherwise admin-ed, let me know. Huntster (t @ c) 09:19, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, doing a quick rerun to pick up newly formatted sources. I normally leave analysis or report style sandboxes for a long period, especially if they are transcluded elsewhere. -- (talk) 10:20, 20 January 2019 (UTC)

Archive.org links

I think you know more about that, can you get them added (prioritized) to Category:Images from lasvegasvegas.com? I put all of these up for license review some time ago. I imagine it'll be easier for license reviewers if the archive.org links are already there. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 07:51, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

The site is unavailable and it looks like most of these are not on the Wayback Machine, which returns LiveDocumentNotAvailableException when a save to archive is attempted. Those that are, should get links. I am using source search for lasvegasvegas.com and I get 900 search matches before starting, rather than the 925 in the category. As this is a small number, I have not investigated why.
Find those with links via this search.
P.S. If any with WBM links go up for deletion, ensure that the different snapshots are checked. By default the earliest snapshot is being linked, and in some cases it may be that the image is visible in a later snapshot of the source page. -- (talk) 12:18, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

  • It is boring because the DR is the wrong format. When we have large list of files they should be replaced with galleries, then at a glance anyone can see if anything is of value. -- (talk) 17:43, 25 January 2019 (UTC)

Dear Fae,

Is there any evidence this image was uploaded to Unsplash before June 5, 2017? All I know is that it was taken in 2015 but the important thing is when the image was uploaded to Unsplash I think. The Internet archive source is dated to July 14, 2017 which does not help. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 22:29, 26 January 2019 (UTC)

2015 is the Unsplash publication date, as extracted from the site. This can be seen in the gallery page html. -- (talk) 22:44, 26 January 2019 (UTC)
You are missing the point. The date of 17 March 2017 given in the info box, is date of publication to Unsplash. To verify, you can go to the WBM link and examine the source code, the metadata for publication date is there.
The date was verified by my script on upload to Commons. For this reason manual verification of the 30,000 photos can be done, but is of debatable added value unless the file is disputed. -- (talk) 08:30, 27 January 2019 (UTC)

Uncrop needed

Hi Fae. Excuse me but I have the usual problem with files that needed to be uncrop, but if I request it with the bot, it doesn't work correctly because these maps hasn't a page number, and the given number is that of the next page. Can you please correct them? They are:

Thank you very much ! Best regards, --DenghiùComm (talk) 10:33, 21 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi, these are a bit fiddly and I do not think there is an easy way to batch change these. As my time is limited right now, I would rather fix thousands of pages given 20 mins of time rather than a handful.
Taking the first example, the url https://archive.org/stream/guidetoitalysici00macm/guidetoitalysici00macm#page/220/mode/1up needs to be swapped to https://archive.org/stream/guidetoitalysici00macm/guidetoitalysici00macm#page/221/mode/1up. If the normal editor is used to swap 220 to 221, then the uncrop category is readded, this will fix the problem.
Thanks -- (talk) 11:05, 21 January 2019 (UTC)
It works ! Even if they are replaced very slowly. Thank you so much Fae for your instructions. Best regards, --DenghiùComm (talk) 11:05, 28 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi Fae, Could you please fix the file name on these? They appear in User:Dispenser/Double extension. Regards, Yann (talk) 18:32, 1 February 2019 (UTC)

These were probably all in Category:Portable Antiquities Scheme, LEIC. Naming conventions vary by whomever is doing the cataloging at PAS, the lack of metadata standards does cause issues with processing titles and descriptions. 100 more were found with jpg rather than JPG. Unfortunately the target names are still pretty unmeaningful. As the batch upload is being refreshed, others with this naming issue may arise and may appear under other locations.
My slower generic fix which is now running; batchmoves "Portable Antiquities Scheme" "\.(JPG|jpg)(.*FindID)" "\2"

Belize

Today, I found some interesting photos of Belize in The National Archives UK. I could not upload them automatically due to a script, but uploaded some of them manually. I think the other photos of this album might also be useful, although I do not need them myself. --NearEMPTiness (talk) 16:42, 3 February 2019 (UTC)

I may be travelling before this completes, but I have kicked off uploading the stream to category:Photographs by The National Archives UK. This should probably be redirected to an existing cat, but that can be done with a simple cat redir. BTW, this is a refresh, I see lots of files being skipped as already on Commons... -- (talk) 16:54, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
@NearEMPTiness: These are consistently getting rejected with verification-error: This file contains HTML or script code that may be erroneously interpreted by a web browser. This probably means that there has been prior attempts to upload the Belize collection, but their format has something in them that the Wikimedia security filters are picking up in their blacklisting. This is does not appear down to bad filenames or bad wikitext, but is intrinsic to the uploaded image files.
I am letting my upload run through the 205 images, which means lots of time-outs, but if there is anything there you want, it's a question of doing them manually. -- (talk) 17:58, 3 February 2019 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Original Barnstar
Hello Fæ! I recently found the large and very important collections of artworks you've uploaded by George Cruikshank and Gustave Doré. I had to buy books of their works when I was studying illustration, satirical art, and life art in college, and what you've uploaded for free use is much more extensive and larger with more detail. As an artist, being able to download and examine these works is really priceless! I put Cruikshank on the high level of William Hogarth, and Doré really has no equal, especially in the beautiful, painstaking detail of his backgrounds. His London series alone is so full of detail I'll probably spend months on them. You uploaded some works by Hablot K. Browne too, the illustrator of several Dickens novels, and a very interesting and talented artist in his own right. I also downloaded the Hogarth and Bruegel collections. I'll be poring over these for years, and it's only a 5 gig collection all told. Thanks so much for these hugely valuable artworks. Anyone who says Commons is crap has to be an absolute philistine... @Rodrigolopes: I was attempting to convert to a DR, but this seemed to fail on my tablet. There is no consensus to speedy delete files simply because they have linkrot. If you wish to act further, please use a DR rather than tagging with no source. FaeBot duplicate analysis

Hello, would you be willing to run the FaeBot duplicate identifier again? Since you last ran it, thousands of flickr bot uploads have resulted in even more dups, and identifying them manually is a time consuming task. Kges1901 (talk) 21:31, 17 February 2019 (UTC)

I am unsure which project you refer to. My duplicate analysis using image hashes was for DoD images, it was not a generic Flickr duplicate finder.
If there are digitally identical duplicates, these should be easy to find with a SQL report. You would have to specific what the particular problem is, and I'm not really available for anything especially complex. -- (talk) 22:16, 17 February 2019 (UTC)

Wrong date from NYPL database

I figure you have more idea than I how we usually handle things like the following. File:Totem Pole, Seattle, Wash (NYPL b12647398-66442).tiff had a date of "1898", presumably from the NYPL database. However, as any number of sources will attest, the totem pole was not erected on that site until October 18, 1899. So what do we normally do to handle that? For the moment, I've written in the date field, "1898 (says the NYPL database, but that's very unlikely: if so, major historical records are wrong about the erection of the totem pole in 1899)". Do we contact NYPL? I do that with various Seattle institutions, and they almost always update their databases based on my corrections, which I can then reflect back to Commons, but I have no contacts at NYPL. Or do we do something else? - Jmabel ! talk 00:20, 21 February 2019 (UTC)

There seems to be a page about you written on the website "The Wiki Cabal", was this written with your consent? It seems kind of odd that that website randomly posts an article about you. Thank you for uploading this (and all the other) image(s)!

Hello Fæ,

thank you for uploading this image from the LACMA (and all the countless other images, of course!)! It served us perfectly well as an illustration for a parochial periodical (in German Gemeindebrief). If you are interested, here is a PDF file of the issue; the image is on page 3, the attribution (for all images etc.) on page 25. Sidenote: This parochial periodical is kind of a non-commercial publication; it is free for all members of the parish; almost all work is done by volunteers; only the printing house get’s paid.

Best regards and thank you again, --Aristeas (talk) 08:56, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

Photographs by Frances Benjamin Johnston

Hi Fæ, In File:Clark sisters, five women, three-quarter length portraits, all facing front LCCN2004664300.jpg (and the TIFF), the photograph is mentioned as Frances Benjamin Johnston. However she was born in 1866, and this picture is from "between 1840 and 1860", so she can't be the photographer. According to the LoC, it was part of her collection, which is a bit different. How to fix this? Regards, Yann (talk) 13:51, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

The LOC notes state "Photographer unidentified", so though the 'collection name' is correct, where the notes indicate other photographers we can license on that basis. In this case, we can use the unknown template. I find 68 matches, i.e. 34 unique photographs, where this correction can be made. Using this search, VFC can do this. If nobody else does, I may get to this later. -- (talk) 14:02, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

Crace Collection

User talk:Fæ/2019/backlog Hi Fae! About 18 months ago you did a fabulous job of scaping, de-zoomifying and uploading map images from the Goad fire-insurance map collection in the British Library c:Category:Goad fire insurance maps from the British Library.

I was wondering, if you still have the scripts to hand, would it be possible to do a similar job on the BL's Crace Collection of maps of London? [1] (about 1200 in all, of which about 285 have georeferencing). We have a few low-res uploads in c:Category:Crace_Collection, but it would be great to have the whole lot in high resolution -- there are some lovely maps there, eg a whole clutch from the Grosvenor Estate relating to the development of Pimlico [2].

It would be great to have these on Commons, both in their own right; and also because I'm hoping the "Layers of London" project [3] might be interested in some of the ones that have been georeferenced (and also some of the Goad maps) -- for them it would be a lot easier to deal with whole images from Commons as a starting point, rather than zoomified ones at the BL.

If you could find any time to look at these, I'd be really grateful. Best wishes, Jheald (talk) 14:55, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

Tiny little extra to the request: it would be great if the Commons filenames could include the BL shelfmark, eg "- BL Maps Crace Port. 8.39" for [4] - this is quite helpful for seeing what's in a category, and where it's come from. Thanks! Jheald (talk) 18:52, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
I will take a look, but realistically a proper look may have to wait to the end of the month. -- (talk) 22:30, 10 December 2018 (UTC)

Next time I will try to assign each of them the specific category of the ancient Roman moneyer (1300 files !). It is about FindID 593096, 758916, 764075, 810853, 874626, 886345, 99932 (You'll find them all gathered in the first line of the category). Thanks in advance. Do we keep actively wrong Flickr tags? Year in title?

On something like File:Book of the Royal blue (1897) (14574637550).jpg, which has some obviously "wrong" Flickr tags (e.g. "bookyear:1897 bookdecade:1890 bookcentury:1800" for something clearly from 1909): do we keep the tags as a record of what this source says? Do we keep the title that gives the wrong year as a matter of filename stability? Or do we change these? - Jmabel ! talk 03:24, 22 March 2019 (UTC)

There is no special reason to keep Flickrtags if they are misleading, in fact the default is that they can be easily changed on Flickr. If any tags are factually incorrect, I see no harm in deleting them. With regard to filenames, fixing dates falls within the file move criteria, so that's fine too. -- (talk) 07:52, 22 March 2019 (UTC)

Just checking: are you still doing regular batches of Xeno-canto imports? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:28, 23 March 2019 (UTC)

Only on request. Kicked off an update now.
Looks like >290 new audio files https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=8391607. It's oddly slow running, I have not looked in to why, probably not worth the volunteer time to make it efficient.
The log makes me think that the problem is duplicate detection taking a long time. This may be renames either on Commons or at Xenocanto, e.g. "Brushfinch" -> "Brush finch", which then are not detected as existing filenames and need to be rejected by the API after upload to the WMF server. The update has been running over 3 days so far, so there may be an interruption as this is happening on my clunky 2nd hand X220 which will be switched off for travelling shortly (the battery is only good for about an hour).

This certainly bears watching. I side fully with the Internet Archive on this one. Hopefully this madness won't affect Commons in the future.

Request & Invitation for Wiki Loves Love 2019 Jury

Hello @: , Hope you are doing well! I am co-ordinator of Wiki Loves Love 2019, an international Commons Contest aimed at documenting love in different cultures and the theme of 2019 is festivals, ceremonies and rituals of love. We would be honored to have you on Jury for the contest, which will happen from February 1- February 28 2019. Please let us know if it is agreeable, our team would be excited and thrilled to have you on board. The timeline would be after first week of March to couple first weeks of April. Hopefully, that time would be enough for the jury. And if it is not, then we can always extend. But we will do the pre-work and your work would be to select the winner photographs. Happy New Year to you. Wishing you lots of love and happiness.Wikilover90 (talk) 10:12, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

@Wikilover90: Count me in. Happy to help out with the final selection and comfortable to take part in Skype or similar conferencing as part of that process. -- (talk) 11:46, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

Downloadings

Hi Fæ,

I've seen that one year ago you have downloaded numerous bird's audio files from Xeno-canto. I'm currently working on Melanerpes herminieri on WP:fr, and unfortunately none of the files on their site have been transfered on Commons. I'm not fully aware of the correct procedure (shortcuts, credits etc) to do it easly. Since you are probably well trained to do it, may I ask you the favor to perform the transfer for me on Commons when you'll have so time to spare ? It would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks by advance. --LPLT (talk) 22:18, 28 April 2019 (UTC)

XC files were refreshed on Commons just a few weeks ago. The files you are looking for are on a non commercial licence so we are unable to upload them. It may be worth contacting the recordist and suggesting a licence change so they can be immediately used on Wikipedia. I can do another refresh run if that happens. -- (talk) 03:02, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
Oh ! I haven't noticed their licences. I thought it was the same. I will try to contact the recordists to ask for a possible new licensing. Thanks for your answer.--LPLT (talk) 09:56, 29 April 2019 (UTC)

Hello, there's a request to rename your file, since you are also filemover, can you proceed or decline this yourself? Thank you.--AldnonymousBicara? 09:54, 2 May 2019 (UTC)

This .com is closing down shortly. It's a good source of paintings, artefacts and sculpture; many of which are out of copyright. Is there way of archiving same? -Broichmore (talk) 15:55, 9 May 2019 (UTC) of

Not sure how large the site is, but anyone can run wget (there's a windows version too) and clone the entire website. See https://www.linuxjournal.com/content/downloading-entire-web-site-wget if you want to try. Potentially, sticking a copy on WMF labs is then a reasonable thing to do, so long as some volunteers are prepared to make it into an uploading project. Do you have a link that states when the site is closing? -- (talk) 16:03, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
He's not given a date. They sent an "Everything must go" and greatly reduced prices message to their mailing and client list, before they will announce it to the public. We have had about 50-60 painting uploads through the years. Good quality images. -Broichmore (talk) 16:18, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
Okay. I am running my own wget on my laptop. Let's see if it completes.
Sorry, had to give up. A simple wget runs in to errors as the images are in a protected folder, probably to stop mass downloads.
However my knowledge of wget is minimal, it may be worth asking at the VP. -- (talk) 17:32, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
Are they in one folder. Can I access it manually? -Broichmore (talk) 18:52, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
They are under http://www.vallejogallery.com/details/ each one under its own folder which is a number. However reading them will give 403 errors. However if you work out each filename, they are readable, like https://www.vallejogallery.com/details/132/12028_600%20dpi%2006-19-08%20un%20framed.jpg. As I say, you can navigate the pages and view each image in its own tab, then download it (if there are 100-ish this is doable), or if the filenames of images can be parsed from the database in some other way, one could mass download the list.
Based on https://www.vallejogallery.com/list.php?filters=All&category=All&sub_category=&query=&id=1&artist_id=&ltype=list it looks like there are 138 images in total, and as we already have 50, doing it by hand may be more efficient than playing around with scripts. -- (talk) 19:05, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
Yeah I've made a hidden folder for the 59, to simplify matters. Thanks. -Broichmore (talk) 19:08, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

This is hard work, 66 or so images of 2D paintings uploaded already and that's just artist surnames A and B. -Broichmore (talk) 20:35, 11 May 2019 (UTC)

Category discussion warning

Category:Ichtyologie,_ou,_Histoire_naturelle,_générale_et_particulière_des_poissons has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Drawings Vs. Photographs on Wikipedia

Note that I am only bringing this to your attention because you spoke out against the censorship of pornography and sexual acts on Wikimedia Commons

A couple of months ago I noticed that on the English Wikipedia page for autofellatio a drawing was used instead of a photograph, when reviewing its history I noticed that a user named "Jiffman" uploaded an image of himself performing this act, later this user was permanently banned from the English Wikipedia for uploading "File:Autofellatio6.jpg" (NSFW) and I saw that this image was transferred to Wikimedia Commons by another user. Despite having policies against such censorship there it still seems common to replace photographs with drawings as "File:Autofellatio6.jpg" (NSFW) is only used on the Dutch Wikipedia while "File:Autofel.svg" (NSFW) is used on a lot of Wikipedia's. I think that people might be discouraged from uploading high quality educational photographs of this nature if people keep removing them from Wikipedia's, do you think that there could be another way how we can encourage such uploads such as creating a NSFW-based photography competition? I am looking for feedback on this subject before proposing anything. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 15:05, 14 June 2019 (UTC)

Addendum, actually this user appeared to have been blocked here multiple times for uploading that file. Maybe it's the "shoot first, ask questions never" mentality that prevents high quality sexual images from being donated. Meanwhile there are users who call every new upload in this category as "low quality" and "worthless" discouraging these people which is allowed to stand. Is this just an issue with Wikimedian culture being problematic? --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 15:08, 14 June 2019 (UTC)

Unfortunately a project would probably be a non-starter. People promoting such a project are quite likely to be targeted for harassment. I would not recommend anyone use their long term account for a project like this, especially if their real life identity were associated with it.
A more productive approach would be to set up a specific account to upload photographs from and set up a non-publicised project with an interest group or something like a fetishwear shop, so that a photograph collection that is both high quality and diverse can be published free to upload. Doing this via Flickr would also make sense, so that attempts to delete the files and debates over NSFW being in scope or not, would not affect the collection itself. -- (talk) 15:31, 14 June 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for your feedback, though I still believe that the culture on Wikimedia Commons regarding educational pornography should change, I remember seeing another user comment on a deletion request that most images we have are of "young White women" because the file in question was of an older woman. Trying to organise such a thing on Flickr would amount to giving up, but trying to get a shop or company to donate their images might be a good first step. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 15:43, 14 June 2019 (UTC)
By the way, Jiffman was quite unusual. One aspect, unless I am confusing stories, was that they were around for a few years after publication to confirm they had no problem with the photograph being used. It remains a good case study of a NSFW photograph that is clearly in scope with no doubts about copyright or consent. -- (talk) 15:48, 14 June 2019 (UTC)

WLP question

Hi! Sorry for bothering you, but I have a few questions on how to handle some files uploaded to Wiki Loves Pride 2019. I figured I'd ask you since you participated in a discussion in the village pump and seem to be an experienced user on Commons. I'll list the files and my concerns.

If you don't have time to look through these, notify me and I'll ask someone else. :) --Hmxhmx 11:36, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

Agree most are obvious trouble makers and vandals. There is a thread on ANU, if you see any more in the next day or so, it would be worth just adding the account names to that thread. There is likely to be at least one sockpuppeteer that is trying to get attention and may be handled by stewards rather than local admins. -- (talk) 12:45, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

Clueless cropping – or not really a crop?

A person having such amount of Commons experience certainly should know that data in JPEGs go from top to bottom. That is, cutting some bottom part of the picture away may not require DCT re-encoding. What File:Boeing_737-3B7, USAir JP5920324.jpg #filehistory was then – perhaps something more than a crop proper? Why did the file size increase drastically? Please, explain such changes better next time. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 19:38, 26 June 2019 (UTC)

Categorization

User talk:Fæ/2019/backlog @: searching for a photo of Frances Carpenter here on commons, I came across the images from Category:Chevy Chase Club and noticed the TIF files, I was wondering if it makes sense these files to be added to the same categories like for example jpg files. ESA duplicate pictures

Hi Fæ! Thanks a lot for User:Fæ/Project list/ESA! I'm categorizing many pictures from Category:ESA images (review needed) and found some duplicates of pictures previously imported in Category:ESA_files_uploaded_by_Revent. I didn't check all of them but it's likely all of these 254 photos have been duplicated. What should we do? Keep the oldest ones (those imported by Revent) or yours? vip (talk) 15:39, 25 December 2018 (UTC)

@Don-vip: The decision of which to keep should be based on which image is better quality (presumably these will all be digitally identical), and which have the better description. There's no issue with deleting my uploads where they are duplicates, I am still puzzled as to exactly how these are created, as I do automatic duplicate checks before upload. -- (talk) 09:19, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

@Don-vip: I have started an initial test generating a local (i.e. off-wiki) JSON database of image hashes for all ESA uploads. There are 2,689 subcategories, and I do not yet know how many unique files that includes, so it will take many hours/days to generate the database, but once generated testing new files will be quick. Depending on eventual size, I may have to rewrite my code if it becomes impossible to hold the results in a memory array. These hashes can then be referenced to see if a version of the same photograph already exists on Commons before upload. A simple minded check so that a version with the same extension that is not a higher resolution will never be uploaded makes sense for the vast majority of uploads we are interested in hosting from the ESA. This would allow for a TIFF to be uploaded which is identical to an existing jpeg, but not another jpeg.

Here is a typical example the image hashes can discover and could prevent, these two photographs were not previously linked or marked as duplicates. They are identical with a hex image hash of '2001191209594c68', the difference probably from the fact that one has EXIF data and the other does not. There may be other 'hidden' differences that appear to cause one thumbnail to look blurred in the gallery preview (at least in Chrome):

Here's a counter intuitive gallery created from 4 existing uploads which match the hex image hash "4070f8ecece9f162" and are 'virtually' identical because they were taken by a satellite only seconds apart. In the envisioned new upload process only the first would get uploaded:

I was tempted by the idea of adding the image hashes to the Commons image pages, either as an infobox parameter or as hidden metadata, but I am not sure that anyone else would ever use them. Even my specific way of generating the thumbnail to be hashed, and then which type of image hash to apply, is not an agreed 'standard'.

Note that the existing Commons API available SHA1 hash shows which files are 100% digitally identical. The image hash is effectively 'looking' at the image and shows up 'virtually' identical images, even if they have different resolutions or are hosted in different formats like jpeg/TIFF/png. -- (talk) 09:31, 28 March 2019 (UTC)

By the way, these hashes are being generated on my 8 year old second hand laptop, which is now my main machine. These type of experiment are at the limit of what I can do at home, and I have to push it down to the lowest processing priority to avoid over heating. I could do some of this on labs, but it's not such a good environment for playing around with early testing. If it was less of a hassle, I could shape a project like this into a grant request, and maybe upgrade some of my (literally) dying kit. But, it's a hassle, and the sun is shining today. -- (talk) 11:10, 28 March 2019 (UTC)

@: Great experiment! It would be useful for all imports, not only ESA. It's never been considered by the foundation to be added as an official Commons feature? vip (talk) 22:33, 29 March 2019 (UTC)

You can find more background and experiments at User:Fæ/Imagehash.
There was a discussion on the VP at the time, and there was a phabricator ticket (linked on the right), but the idea of the WMF picking this up was effectively abandoned.
No doubt I could get some funding and run after this as a potential Commons improvement, especially for tracking copyright violations, but my feelings are about the same as they were in 2017, I'm not sure I want to vanish down this rabbit hole. With a strategic eye, it may be that recent changes in copyright law, putting more onus on 'hosts' to track copyright violations, will force WMF development to spend some time on media file matching solutions at the time of upload, beyond SHA1 matching. Leaving this one on pause for now, apart from the odd interesting experiment like this one... -- (talk) 11:51, 30 March 2019 (UTC)
Among the new uploads, an animated GIF

After playing around a bit more with this today, I will try a new upload run. Not only are imagehash matches checked, but near matches are checked within a difference of 2 (which means very close matches). An example of a match stopping an upload is quite interesting, as it highlights duplicates at the ESA source, even though they have different ID numbers and descriptions:

On the other hand here is an example of an exact difference hash match, which in truth is not an exact match as the same data is used to generate a different colour image. Potentially I could use a different imagehash to account for colour, but no plan to do this at the moment:

Large TIFF duplicates will not be tested, mainly because of the limits of running this on my laptop*. However these seem less likely than png, gif and jpeg duplicates. * The source image is loaded to RAM, resized to 80px wide using 4 different methods and then 4 hashes are generated, often but not always giving the same hash, this added complexity is attempting to match how Commons does its thumbnail generation, without exactly understanding the detailed methods. Clearly, as TIFFs might be >200MB, it is unrealistic to handle those the same way.

There is potential to retrospectively go back through the past ~36,000 (unique) uploads from ESA and mark duplicates and matches with different filetypes, but that will be a separate exercise. -- (talk) 12:11, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

Revisiting the image hash database, I have started to tease out duplicates in more detail and examine 'outliers'. One amusing discovery was to find 30 ESA images with image hashes of zero, definitely a "what?" moment:

Then, perhaps more funky, is the discovery of 29 ESA images with a precise image (difference) hash of f0f0f0f0f0f0f0f0, presumably because the data for most of these was computer enhanced to have all pixels perfectly "balanced".

Eventually, with a bit more debugging on real/not real duplicates, I'll probably be creating a "duplicates" category and adding cross-referencing galleries for (literal) non-duplicates with matching & near match hashes in the other versions parameter.

Before someone else picks this up, some of the images are not ESA. They get included because they are inherited in the automatic searching though all subcategories of the top ESA category. Unfortunately that's down to the not-necessarily logical way that Commons lets human volunteers make subjective choices about category hierarchies. -- (talk) 12:30, 6 April 2019 (UTC)

Seattle Sanborn maps

I see you uploaded a bunch of Sanborn maps of Seattle (thank you very much for that). However, it looks like a lot of them for 1893 were missed. If you look at https://www.loc.gov/resource/g4284sm.g4284sm_g09315189301/?st=gallery&c=160, we are missing a lot of these images (maybe half? I haven't entirely worked it out). I noticed this because I was looking in Commons for the images that are at https://www.loc.gov/resource/g4284sm.g4284sm_g09315189301/?sp=83 and https://www.loc.gov/resource/g4284sm.g4284sm_g09315189301/?sp=84.

Is there any chance of coming up with a way to upload the missing pages of this? - Jmabel ! talk 02:39, 22 July 2019 (UTC)

[Acknowledging that you're on a Wiki break. This is not urgent, and can await your return/ later availability; hope all is well with you]

This search (for example) lists pictures in the collection of State Library of Victoria that are out of copyright. Each is available (via the "Available online" link) as a jpg, and as a high-res tif. The resultant "Download" pages lists them as "Out of Copyright". Could you automate downloading all their OoC artworks, please? They have an API. Category:Paintings in the State Library of Victoria has very few members. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:04, 16 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi Fæ, it looks like that since 2019-03-18 there is no update any more. Is there some problem? I appreciate your list very much. Could you update it again? Thanks --DenghiùComm (talk) 06:29, 2 May 2019 (UTC)

I did not realize it was failing. Travelling, so looking at this may have to wait until next week. It may have been the forced move of bot tools from one server to another has broken it, or the ghastly arbitrary limit on length of SQL queries might have been tampered with, again. -- (talk) 06:50, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
Ok. Thank you for your answer. --DenghiùComm (talk) 22:05, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

Notes

Field ipb_reason has been replaced by ipb_reason_id in table ipblocks by the WMF, this seems to have broken the report. Now you have to get ipb_reason_id, search for the row where comment_id = ipb_reason_id in table comment and select field comment_text, which should be unique. -- (talk) 13:47, 13 May 2019 (UTC)

Proposal for new project

Dear Fæ: I just noted some of 50,000 photos in the Archive of the German Colonial Association which can be searched via a search engine. I guess that you are occasionally searching for ideas for new import projects, and if so, you might find there a lot of pre-1919 photos. Although the template of the search engine can be switched to English, I had to enter the German word "Kamerun" in the top field instead of "cameroon" to find, what I was searching for. --NearEMPTiness (talk) 06:46, 9 June 2019 (UTC)

I've taken a brief look today. It certainly can be mined and the images uploaded, but I have doubts about how to make a judgement on copyright. Raising for feedback on the VP. -- (talk) 12:33, 18 June 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for the high quality photo of Liliuokalani

On the anniversary of her birth, it was nominated for Feature image and was listed. Great work finding it. After doing my genealogy (must difficult research I did on Wiki) I found out that my gg grandparents were connected to her through adoption. My 1st cousin (3x removed) was a woman named Kōnia who adopted Liliuokalani as an infant. Her and her husband were the only parents she ever knew. My gg grandfather managed the lands of Kōnia as her uncle (her father was my gg grandfather's half brother). It seems that Kalakaua (Liliuokalani's brother) had been good enough to include my gg grandmother at his coronation as a hula dancer along with other kumu hula (hula master/teachers) from Maui. I had found the other version and uploaded it but yours is far superior. I used the portrait to paint a preliminary portrait in oils but your version will be much better for the full size portrait! Good work.--Mark Miller (talk) 23:07, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

OpenCV

--C.Suthorn (talk) 08:11, 16 September 2019 (UTC)

@C.Suthorn: Hi, thanks for writing. I do not know of a good library of OpenCV examples, I just used the guidance and tutorials at https://opencv.org/. I did find that experimenting first using https://jupyter.org/ very helpful, as I managed to get the basic modules running before putting together my bot programme. My main obstacle was finding ways of extracting thumbnail size images from Commons to save on memory space when creating hashes or running comparisons. Full size image processing rapidly becomes impossibly slow. It is also worth trying out https://paws.wmflabs.org as a research "notebook", though I have not done much image experimenting there.
If you find reading books helpful, it would be worth looking through a University library catalog to find Python guides for OpenCV. I tend to learn faster by getting on with writing the programmes I am interested in, rather than learning about the whole language, but that does mean that I remain unaware of 90% of what the language or modules can do, or the theory behind it. -- (talk) 09:35, 16 September 2019 (UTC)

Hey, Fæ! If this was a batch upload, something went a little weird with not getting the full res. I've fixed it, but thought you might want to know. Getting the full res added a border, but... eh... probably best to call this copy an original and extract from it. Adam Cuerden (talk) 15:56, 16 September 2019 (UTC)

This relied on the standard Flickr API call for the "original" size. I doubt it failed, it's more likely that the stream owner overwrote with a new scan. Our uploads are only a snapshot, very few of our batch projects include long term refreshes... For the volunteer refreshes are significantly less motivating than new stuff. -- (talk) 11:14, 18 September 2019 (UTC)

@Yuraily Lic: For non-controversial speedies for my past batch upload projects, you can use Category:Uploads by Fæ needing speedy deletion. By using cat-a-lot, this is then easy to apply when browsing several pages of files in another category. This method then avoids these unnecessary notifications for what is really housekeeping work. The description of the file is wrong: the source leads to a completely different photograph. Please either change the description or the image. Same goes for this related file. Vysotsky (talk) 12:39, 25 September 2019 (UTC)
@Fae : can you change these 2 uploads or the descriptions? Vysotsky (talk) 21:24, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

Actually, though these are obviously public domain, I cannot immediately see what the correct source would be. The type of glitch, where the uploaded file has a different catalogue text, might be due to a WMF server, or the source server, dropping out unpredictably just at the wrong moment in a batch. I did try looking for 'fifth avenue north 18th street' but only a different photograph was pulled up. -- (talk) 01:59, 8 October 2019 (UTC)

I have noted that the image A8492 was uploaded by you on 10 October 2017 together with all the official-looking panels. Four photos were taken of HMS Alima on this day.
I have just completed a page on HMS Alisma (K185) and would prefer to use this image A8492 as it gives a rather better view of the whole ship. However this upload of image A8491 is still displaying panels indicating that it could be deleted with one week.
Are you able to upload this image and include thes samepanels be replaced by those used on image File:HMS ALISMA, BRITISH FLOWER CLASS CORVETTE. 22 APRIL 1942, LIVERPOOL. A8492.jpg? Richard Tennant (talk)

@Richard Tennant: The link you have provided does not exist on Commons. Could you look again? Thanks -- (talk) 11:29, 7 October 2019 (UTC)
en:File:HMS ALISMA, BRITISH FLOWER CLASS CORVETTE. 22 APRIL 1942.jpg
This was on the English Wikipedia. Uploads to Wikipedia are a separate database to those on Commons. I have added a movetocommons template, which means that being public domain, it can validly be used on all language Wikipedias without more uploads. There's probably a backlog for transfer, but it should eventually happen without you having to do anything more. -- (talk) 11:36, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

Category discussion warning

Images from Auckland Museum has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed.

Thank you!

About your uploaded images

I noticed that there are many images on your talk page which have been deleted, it seems that you often does things that seem to violate policies.--Kai3952 (talk) 08:14, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

Can you answer my question please?--Kai3952 (talk) 01:02, 8 October 2019 (UTC)
I thought you were making a statement rather than asking a question.
Many of these deletions relate to upload projects from years ago where issues like the copyright of signs was missed as an issue. For large upload projects some housekeeping is normal, even when the source is a famous and well managed archive. For example many hundreds of my uploads of public domain images from the Library of Congress have been deleted because the way we interpret international copyright restrictions is not solely based on U.S. property law.
I encourage those doing this type of normal retrospective and non-controversial housekeeping to use Category:Uploads by Fæ needing speedy deletion rather than spending more time than is needed using deletion templates and individual review. -- (talk) 01:40, 8 October 2019 (UTC)
@Kai3952: By the way, the archive period for this page was set to 30 days by another user without my consent. This was the reason that an unusually high number of notices were hanging around this page. I have set that back to a more manageable period. Thanks -- (talk) 09:11, 8 October 2019 (UTC)

It occurs to me that you may not have the DR watchlisted. But alot of these seem to be late 20th century toys. We may want to consider pausing this upload and sorting through them more carefully, since it looks like about a 50/50 hit/miss ratio right now of files that would have to be deleted per TOY. GMGtalk 15:13, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
They should be fairly easily findable, so far I only see the two toys from the McDonald's freebies. Though the museum has a significant toy collection, most are 70+ years old as they are part of the wartime catalogue and so are highly unlikely to be copyright issues. Of the 120,000+ images uploaded (most a couple of years ago), about 1,500 seem to be of 20th C. toys if we can trust the museum's classification text. Try this search.
If necessary, a better action might be to mass add a review category based on date and classification text. However a manual visual check would probably be just as effective to weed out any obvious copyvios as there appear to be so few.
BTW, if you raise more DRs, could you do so based on the Auckland categories rather than the huge bucket category of "Files uploaded by Fæ"? Thanks -- (talk) 16:21, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the links. Faebot is removing uploads by you now, it takes a while.
I'll have to recompile the script slightly to add a 'first uploader' condition. The mismatch with your early uploads is that Get2be and EMBU are both disposable accounts but they only edited these files rather than uploading them. Good improvement.
Fix implemented. As well as yourself, I noticed that BotMultichill was included and am removing those. -- (talk) 16:44, 25 November 2019 (UTC)
As the fix is working, Faebot's continued categorization is not an issue. I have a couple of threads removing previously identified wrong uploads, including yours, but I have to identify and list accounts by hand and Faebot going through the existing category examining file histories takes a couple of hours. I plan on doing another tranche later on today, depending on what comes up. -- (talk) 18:13, 25 November 2019 (UTC)
Good Luck :-). Regards Mutter Erde (talk) 18:24, 25 November 2019 (UTC)
There were a wider range of accounts included than I imagined, so I have created a script to remove all files where the uploader does not appear in the (off wiki) list of credible suspected disposable accounts. So this should be tidied up this evening while I can go watch something on TV.

„File:Kazuenokami Kato Kiyomasa Observing a Monkey with a Writing Brush LACMA M.84.31.456 (2 of 2).jpg“

Hello, Fæ! Searching for the prints of Utagawa Toyonobu’s series „Shinsen Taikōki“ I came accross this file. Years ago you uploaded the file „File:Kazuenokami Kato Kiyomasa Observing a Monkey with a Writing Brush LACMA M.84.31.456 (2 of 2).jpg“ but it makes no sense; parallel you upoaded „File:Kazuenokami Kato Kiyomasa Observing a Monkey with a Writing Brush LACMA M.84.31.456 (1 of 2).jpg“ which is the correct content (1 of 2) of Yoshitoshis print. The uploaded print (2 of 2) is the left sheet of a Toyonobu diptych you can find at Commons under „File:End of Baba Minonokami.jpg“. The file (2 of 2) should better be deleted. Best. --Horst Gräbner (talk) 16:07, 28 November 2019 (UTC)

I don't see a need for deletion. If the work can be identified correctly, renaming of the file and adjusting the description is what should be done here. De728631 (talk) 21:09, 28 November 2019 (UTC)
It’s an unusable file. Which sense makes it to have the half of a diptych when only the two prints depict the composition? But on the other side here are tens of thousands unusable files. So please do what you mean. Regards. --Horst Gräbner (talk) 12:34, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
Just to reiterate, it could be that LACMA only have this one page of the original diptych. As such it's a reasonable photograph of the specific print. If you can find evidence that both parts are held by LACMA, that would be useful to add to the description, even if we cannot find the equivalent extra photograph. -- (talk) 12:38, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
Six years is a very long time ago for upload projects. Vaguely I recall some issue with wrong images appearing in the catalogue at LACMA, and if you check the source, the error is still there. However the "new" website has since dropped these images from public view, ref https://collections.lacma.org/node/1349418, consequently I doubt the curators have any interest in correcting the old format catalog. If we can find the other half of the diptych that matches, that would be ideal. However it may never have been made public at lacma.org, or perhaps LACMA only ever had this single page of the diptych in their collections, and a conventional Google site search shows nothing. Certainly the textual description on Commons should be corrected, do be bold and have a go.

Used laptop

Thinkpad X220 with last of the old-style IBM keyboards
Chiclet keyboard on T440p

In which country (or at least, what continent) do you live? I'm not sure what I can do, but I tinker with hardware sometimes. If you live (or can receive packages) in the EU, I could think about this. Also, what are you looking for in a used laptop? It's not clear to me from m:Hardware donation program/Fæ if it should be chunkier, if IPS is required, processing power, battery life, keyboard layout.. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 14:34, 30 November 2019 (UTC)

UK based. However, I do tinker with hardware as well. The current X220 was a slightly damaged one from eBay for £100 and has been upgraded with a refurbished SSD and a small format m2 sata card, both from eBay. It's a great laptop, especially the keyboard, but the processor is soldered on so not replaceable, and I have had overheating problems. I like the old ThinkPads as they are so upgradable and repairable but I have had other machines. My request for the WMF scheme was a bit of a test as whether it really works, but based on the history of Commons upload projects I could bypass the Wikimedia organizations and try opening a crowdfunding project online to buy a beefier fixed machine to act as a home server and a more mobile easy to carry a laptop to fiddle with programming while in different places or travelling. If that worked, I would probably buy new kit rather than second hand or refurbished.
Vaguely thinking of specs:
Desktop or long term server
  1. Low-ish power consumption to be a bit greener
  2. Low noise as it'll have to be used as a desk machine
  3. Supporting 2 or 3 monitors, though this might be tacked on in various ways
  4. OS & processor has a good reputation for image processing and power management using standard Ubuntu install
  5. As it'll be used for experiments or maintenance on graphics, complex image processing (like mass image hashing) and video processing, something like 32GB or more of RAM
  6. Storage less of an issue, as 500GB disk space would be plenty and archives can be put out to connected drives
Laptop something nice and light to carry around in hand luggage and user maintainable enough to last at least 5 years (Thinkpad, Dell?)
  1. Probably no more than 14-inch screen with high resolution, 13-inch is ideal
  2. Core i7 within the last few years (my X220 has i7 but it's a rather old one) or better or user upgradable
  3. Good reputation for running with Linux (I have not used Windows for a decade)
  4. 16GB RAM and preferably upgradable to more
  5. Good reputation for efficient cooling, rather than fans maxing out when video processing is going on
I have not thought about UPS, it's probably not essential as power outages are rare. Sorting out an automated backup is probably more critical. There is also the caution that whatever is always-on has credible green credentials and would probably still need to be powered off if unattended for weeks for safety. -- (talk) 15:11, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
Not UPS, IPS. Better colors, but more expensive. Core i7 laptops aren't really something I see much. And unless you're talking about quad cores (not every i7 is a quad core), I'm not sure there is much of a benefit over an i5. 16GB of DDR3L laptop memory can be found on AliExpress for 40 euros or so, I didn't have to pay import tariffs but YMMV, but this is probably useless advice as any laptop from the last few years uses DDR4. In general, used laptops are best value when they are at least 4 years old in my experience. That's roughly the time after which companies write them off. If you want something newer, buying new is probably a better idea. When a new 14" Ryzen 5 quad core laptop can be found for 500 quid or so, a relatively new used machine isn't great value.
The cheapest desktop with 32GB is probably a fake X79 and a Xeon like ali(remove this)express.com/item/33031262183.html?storeId=604710 (Kllisre X79 motherboard set with Xeon E5 2650 V2 4x8GB=32GB 1600MHz DDR3 ECC REG memory ATX USB3.0 SATA3 PCI-E NVME M.2 SSD) for 140 quid. Don't know what the import tariffs for that would be. (in NL it would cost about 45 euros to import, assuming they declare the actual value.. but they probably declare less) - Alexis Jazz ping plz 17:04, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
Some other notes..
  • Video processing on a laptop is not the most amazing idea (obviously), but if you do it some external cooling solution would be recommendable. You could put something together yourself or get something off the shelf like File:Laptop cooler.JPG.
  • If your laptop heavily depends on its underside for cooling (your X220 doesn't seem to, but my Dell gets airflow from the bottom), lift the laptop an inch or so from the surface it's sitting on. Not always practical, but for my Dell it makes a huge difference.
  • In a 14" or smaller laptop, you will generally not find a user upgradable CPU. Upgrading a laptop CPU is usually not worth it, though there are a few exceptions.
  • 16GB of RAM can be had in a DDR3 laptop (even your X220 supports that), more means DDR4 and drives the price up.
  • A third, fourth or fifth gen i5 laptop (X220 is second gen) can be found under 150 quid, sometimes as low as 50. Newer generations cost more and usually have DDR4. (sixth gen can be either DDR3 or DDR4) Seventh gen is barely worth the additional cost second hand IMHO, compared to new.
Most of the stuff I have laying around atm is mostly as old or older than your X220. As long as your X220 still works probably not worth the trouble. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 18:17, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
And I forgot: your cooling problems. Probably caused by either dust or a bad thermal connection between your CPU and heatsink. In case of dust (assuming you don't want to take the entire machine apart), you can try blocking the fan with a thin screwdriver or something and blow into it with compressed air. But be careful with the pressure, even when the fan is blocked, extremely strong airflow can bend stuff. If the problem is the connection, you would have to take it apart, remove the cooling paste or pad and apply new cooling paste. If you're out of luck, the fan is running on its last legs. Finding a replacement may or may not be easy. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 19:46, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the suggestions. I have looked at how to get at the fan, but it's a bit of a nightmare on the X220. The problem was mainly (probably) caused by doing FFmpeg recompression for hours at a time, sadly something that I have failed to find a way to "officially" run on labs both because of complaints about the storage needed and finding the IP address blocked by YouTube. Without that heavy loading, the core temperature hovers around 64-74C with medium fan noise.
If the WMF get back to me in the next couple of months, I'll be genuinely grateful for whatever they can let me have from their old development quality laptops and adapt my plans to whatever that make is. If they don't, I may start looking at cheapest second-hand 440p prices with the option of eventually upgrading the processor and maybe think again about the effort involved in trying my hand at crowdfunding to raise enough to buy something more modern. The T440p is an old machine, but has good reviews for this sort of video processing and can probably easily handle real-time Zoom video conferencing, which the X220 definitely is *useless* at, though I would probably keep the X220 handy as a devoted basic Ubuntu word processor and occasional code editor for its lovely old-style keyboard. -- (talk) 22:38, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
A quick look at the hardware maintenance manual for the X220 makes it appear as if the fan should be blockable from the outside, but I don't have an actual X220 to check. Note that for video processing with ffmpeg only one thing counts: the CPU. Nothing else. So you'd probably want to avoid T440p models with a GeForce (Intel HD Graphics 4600 is not bad anyway) and try to find a model with a quad core. (so not the i7-4600M) A quad core running at a lower frequency is more power efficient than a dual core at a higher frequency if the task is multithreaded. Though a second hand quad core machine doesn't seem to be very attractive unless you can find a really good deal. A Lenovo V330-14ARR 81B1000FMH (different class, I know) with AMD Ryzen 5 2500U is 500 quid. AMD really shook things up. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 23:50, 30 November 2019 (UTC)

How to change 6000 handles, and monitor changes in the Naturalis shell collection?

Dear Fae,

Perhaps for you the following is just routine:

1. Naturalis shell curators would want to monitor metadata changes by shell enthusiasts in the metadata about 110 k files in https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Mollusca_specimens_at_Naturalis_Biodiversity_Center

2. Leiden University Library wants to put permanent handles as backlinks to their database (I think) in https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Media_contributed_by_KITLV in the metadata field | source =

  • Could you give me some hints, are there tools for this, or is a Python script needed (i didn't use a little Python since ... 2000?)?

Thanks a lot, Hansmuller (talk) 11:18, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

Depending on what sort of things they want to monitor, there are many ways of monitoring changes to the collection like recent changes or using Petscan. If I get the GLAM dashboard running again, that generates modest reports.
Mass adding/changing links to more than a few hundred files is something pywikibot is well suited to, though if you prefer you can raise a request at COM:BR (@Hansmuller: recommend this way forward, the folks that hang out on that noticeboard can knock out scripts like this in a matter of minutes, so long as you can specifify exactly how the changes are to be made). If the backlinks are easily generated based on current identity information then it's fairly easy to write a script for. If there are just a few hundred changes at a time, then COM:VFC is worth trying. -- (talk) 19:20, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

AHKP1

Hi Fæ! Is your script still identifying the photographer? Has he been active since the script was run? (I hope he's not scared away.)

Do you keep the list of his accounts somewhere? It might be interesting for the community to understand his activity over the years, when he stops contributing someday.

I think Hoia Saerda Mea 28 (talk · contribs) is him too, but your script did not match it.--Roy17 (talk) 12:21, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

These accounts are not him:
  1. Anderle (talk · contribs)
  2. Bambinok (talk · contribs)
  3. Enkol (talk · contribs)
  4. Hanankhaleeq (talk · contribs)
  5. Hovorka (talk · contribs)
  6. Riosolar (talk · contribs)
  7. UncleRemus (talk · contribs)
Gentech.spv (talk · contribs) is probably not him either.--Roy17 (talk) 12:26, 4 December 2019 (UTC)
Not planning on doing another run at the moment. I would argue against doing it often or automatically, maybe we should try again in 3 or 4 months time and think about whether other types of contribution pattern could usefully apply. The historical tracking of accounts by behaviour or other data is fine, but as this is not vandalism or in other ways damaging, there is potentially more damage from being over-aggressive in tracking this uploader, plus we are probably always going to some misidentifications which could worry other users too. Note that I can not stop someone going through the category and reverse engineering a list of uploader accounts, but I do think it would be a mistake to publish it.
Accepted your list at face value, related uploads will be gradually removed... could massively speed it up but probably not worth the extra programming thinking time. If you spot others, save up a list and I'll de-cat them as a block. -- (talk) 12:55, 4 December 2019 (UTC)
I agree that he should not be constantly tracked. I was just wondering whether he has contributed since this cat was created and was worried he might be scared off. I was actually thinking of more conservative tagging—his accounts should be matched only after one or two years. For example, a run in 2025 should only match his photos before 2023/4 maybe, so that he's not being followed real-time.--Roy17 (talk) 13:05, 4 December 2019 (UTC)
This might be a more friendly approach. Just re-running one of the reports, it looks like they have created 9 different accounts in the last 2 days, possibly this slight change in behaviour is to put off tracking. -- (talk) 13:21, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

@: I see you've been answering some questions lately, so I'm pinging you again. Is this something you can help with, or should I look elsewhere? - Jmabel ! talk 15:53, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
@Jmabel: I briefly looked into this when you raised it, but I cannot tell what the cause is. It could be that the LOC image API (IIIF) has some bugs we don't know about, such as not returning all the files in a scanned album. The 'multisheet' or locbooks uploading routine I use should be comprehensive, and has been rerun several times across the collection. It's a slow but intelligent routine, which notices where files have been uploaded under different filenames. It might be that some of the files you are noticing have actually been uploaded under other names previously, either by me or others, or it could be that the LOC have dummy images getting returned, or it could be that the images are failing within the IIIF image generator on the LOC server side because of something odd happening with the original image scan.
If you can further refine the pattern as to what is missing, then this would greatly help the chance of an easy diagnosis. For me to spend a lot of time digging in to case examples, I would need to know that we were talking about thousands of missing images, rather than a hundred which might be fixable via manual uploads.
My time on uploads is low right now. I should probably try an RFA again, which would warm up my interest as a volunteer with access to deletions and history manipulation, things that have held me back from improving what happens around Commons deletions for several years. It's the main reason that the Commons Fair Use Upload Bot was abandoned as a project, shockingly this was four years ago, itself a rather depressing thing to recognize. -- (talk) 16:09, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
  • It's definitely at most hundreds. And I suspect it was something along the lines of uploading the same number of images as there were plates, but each plate is actually two images. As I say above, for Volume 1 the pattern of what is missing is very straightforward. For both TIF & JPEG, we cut off at "Sanborn Fire Insurance Map from Seattle, King County, Washington. LOC sanborn09315 003-40"; I'm pretty sure that the remaining plates can be had by continuing exactly the same pattern, incrementing that '40', to get images 41-84. Would that much be easy to do? - Jmabel ! talk 16:37, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
If it's detectable, then it should be possible to add a trigger in the upload script to compensate for it. Not going to investigate today, I'm adding a DNAU for a few months to ensure we don't lose it as a wanted fix. -- (talk) 16:40, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

@Ввласенко: Thanks for writing. Your page is on the list, pages are added manually. Your talk page exceeds the maximum transclusion count because of the large number of QIC templates. If you want, I can convert all of those to comments, which should fix the problem, but those particular templates are not part of the talk page trimmer. -- (talk) 16:43, 7 December 2019 (UTC)
@: Thank you! If you can, convert all of those to comments, please. -- Ввласенко (talk) 07:31, 8 December 2019 (UTC)
✓ Done Most but not all QICpromoted templates are being trimmed. There is some variation in use of the parameters, so a few are left intact for the moment. -- (talk) 11:27, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

Talk page trimmer optin

Hi, can I opt-in for User talk:Fæ/talk page trimmer? — regards, Revi 03:37, 12 December 2019 (UTC)

I have created Category:Talk page trimmer for users to opt-in/out more easily, without needing any programming time too. The category is being processed, there's nothing on your talk page that will show that yet. It's not yet at toolforge, I want to soak test a little to make sure no last minute bugs were introduced. -- (talk) 08:08, 12 December 2019 (UTC)

Rollbacks in watchlists

@Jeff G.: With regard to User_talk:Fæ/2019#Rollback, I went with this for all wikis:

.mw-changeslist-line .mw-rollback-link { visibility:hidden; }

.mw-watchlist seems to not exist as a class on my version, this might be down to other javascript mods in my layout. Previously my javascript swapped rollback link text with "-", but that has not worked for a couple of years, presumably due to restricting how javascript is allowed to behave. I could not get :after in css to work within the anchor itself which might have effectively done the same thing. -- (talk) 10:40, 14 October 2019 (UTC)

Thanks.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:49, 14 October 2019 (UTC)

Corrupt image - is it possible to reupload

The following images you uploaded have seemingly become corrupted (thanks to the WMF for not fixing this long-standing data-corruption bug):

Is is possible to reupload them? Sebari – aka Srittau (talk) 00:33, 16 December 2019 (UTC)

There are problems on the WMF server side in parsing the TIFF (there are a couple of outstanding image parsing issues). This bug is logged at Phab:T124662.
I see some have been put up for speedy, this is incorrect. A good option would be to stick them in a "to be reuploaded" category, especially as I doubt anyone has tried automatically searching them out. If the same upload issues apply to all, the category itself can be quoted on Phabricator and we can add more images to it as they are discovered.
@Hornstrandir1: FYI
Category:Uploads by Fæ which fail to display. -- (talk) 07:03, 16 December 2019 (UTC)
Oops, you are right. I didn't even try to download them. Thanks for removing the speedy tags. Sebari – aka Srittau (talk) 08:14, 16 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi, you recently moved this picture. In the edit summary you wrote "Correcting to unknown based on VP discussion, new sources and Louvre catalogue". Could you give me the link of the discussion? Thanks. T8612 (talk) 18:09, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

The sources are as added to the image page, the discussion is here which itself cross-links to the help desk.
FYI, I did talk the case over with an ancient historian who recommended the sources, though that chat will stay private. -- (talk) 18:16, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

Morning Star

Marsha de Cordova Official Parliamentary Photo - wrongly attributed in Morning Star, December 3-12 2019 edition

I thought the above might amuse (or more likely exasperate) you. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 23:11, 19 December 2019 (UTC)

In a Christmas spirit, it is easy to imagine the stressed journalist trying to hit aggressive copy deadlines with fewer resources each year. At least they attempted an attribution, which is some sort of starting point, and a potential legal defence... it might be worth tacking on the explicit attribution in the license, something to do when there's a gap in shopping, cooking, cleaning.
Wishes of the season to you. For the second time, we are spending the week in Newcastle, where the air is healthier and people are slightly more likely to talk to each other in a friendly way, than in the anonymous metropolis. -- (talk) 10:15, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

Poor duplicates from trainpix.org

Hi Fæ!
You uploaded a lot of images from trainpix.org. Very good job overall. However, my trainpix images are weak duplicates and they hit Commons. I have a trainpix account and i uploaded a large photo on Commons and a small copy on trainpix. Trainpix has a limit to images no more than 1280 pixels wide only.
All my uploads on trainpix can be viewed here: [trainpix gallery]
For sample: original image and poor copy from trainpix.
Look at your uploads from trainpix and make deletion request for poor duplicates, please.
With best regards, --George Chernilevsky talk 07:55, 23 September 2019 (UTC)

Housekeeping of this type, where images are later uploaded which are duplicates, is not obviously an action for the uploader of the older image. As you know which files you have uploaded and were also released on trainpix by yourself, this is more an action to be considered by yourself.
You can mark lower resolution duplicates with {{duplicate}}, which is probably the simplest process to use.
Thanks -- (talk) 10:37, 23 September 2019 (UTC)

Hi Fæ. It looks like Category:Internet Archive (uncrop needed) hasn't been tended to for at least a couple of weeks. All the best, --Animalparty (talk) 20:55, 27 September 2019 (UTC)

I'm in the process of swapping my 11 year old HDD to a larger SSD, albeit a cheap refurbished one. It may take a while for me to revisit how this works, but it's caused by "retiring" my old upgradable Macmini which was running these sorts of tasks as a slightly inadequate headless server, so they should be migrated to my X220 Thinkpad. If you notice Faebot activities, you may want to endorse my request at the WMF hardware donation programme, presuming that it's still active. I've cut down a lot on my volunteer time this year due to travelling and a lack of suitable kit. -- (talk) 11:03, 28 September 2019 (UTC)
SSD working, doing a one off catch up run for IA backlog. Due to some odd error with login in to Faebot, which I cannot be bothered to debug right now, having to do these from my main account. -- (talk) 17:40, 28 September 2019 (UTC)
Now running as a Faebot task, every 6 hours. -- (talk) 13:18, 2 October 2019 (UTC)

@Animalparty and Ruff tuff cream puff: If you have some time to investigate, could you examine why these 404 errors might be happening? It may be the cause of a 'residual' number of unprocessed images in the uncrop backlog.

These could be a glitch in the archive. The uncropped image is stored at jp2, but I thought that all formats should be rendered as part of the archive. Based on this one(?) case, I'm not planning to try to rewrite code to fix it or work around it. For the time being I have manually emptied the category without uncropping the files, not a solution but we are so far unclear what the problem is, or if there is a fixable problem. -- (talk) 10:35, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

Category discussion warning

History images from Stadtarchiv Kiel has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed.

Thank you!
