Nashville picture for my homepage?[edit]

Hi Kaldari,

I wanted to verify (FAQ writes, that I should), that I can use your picture from Nashville

for my homepage. Can I use it as a picture in the header? (It's about my country [and soul] music)

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards Josh T. Cute

Sure you can use it all you want. I would prefer to not be credited anywhere. Thanks. Kaldari (talk) 07:02, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

a heads-up[edit]

In 2011 you participated in Commons:Administrators/Requests/Jcb_(de-adminship 2). That discussion ended with User:Jcb losing his administrator privileges.

This note is to inform you that User:Odder proposed Jcb have unconconditional access to administrator privileges restored.

Commons:Administrators/Requests/Jcb (readmin) is scheduled to close on May 20th.

Phidippus[edit]

check out : http://salticidae.org/salticid/diagnost/phidippu/cardi-ph.htm

I think the spider picture you identified as Phidippus johnsoni is actually P. cardinalis. Patrick Edwin Moran (talk) 04:38, 20 May 2013 (UTC) I think I was wrong, anyway. I'll find that picture again. I've raised a couple of P. johnsoni and I don't think the one of yours I was looking at looks right, but the one I found had the wrong carapace color. I'm blind, obviously. Patrick Edwin Moran (talk) 05:16, 20 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Oddly I never noticed before. All the P. johnsoni that I have seen have lacked the spots, but Edwards says that most specimens have the spots. My mistake.Patrick Edwin Moran (talk) 12:06, 20 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Attribution for image[edit]

Dear Sir,

I would like to use your image of the "Twin-spotted Spiny Lizard (Sceloporus magister) in Phoenix, Arizona" available at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File%3ASceloporus_magister_Phoenix.jpg , in an extension-outreach publication related to pests in community environments. This publication is purely for educational purposes and has no commercial interests whatsoever.

However, the suggested attribution format, "By Kaldari (Own work) [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons", is very different from the style I will be following for other pictures in my publication, which will most likely be much shorter and in the format:

"Photo by Abc Defghijk", or "Photo by Abc Defghijk, Lmnopqr.org".

Therefore for the sake of consistency, kindly let me know whether I may cite the images in the above formats, and if so, what name/affiliation should I use.

Thank you! Sincerely, Shaku

Looking for connections to the Honolulu Museum of Art[edit]

Aloha! I am guessing that you know someone from the Honolulu Museum of Art or an editor who works with them, from the bot that you ran that uploaded images from HMA. I used to live on Oahu, & someone from the Smithsonian asked me if I know of any Wikipedia or Wikimedia contacts in Honolulu. Looking for editors to help with an Asian Pacific American edit-a-thon in Honolulu[edit]

On Oahu? Edit Wikipedia or Wikimedia sister projects? You are invited to help the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center with an Asian Pacific American edit-a-thon in Honolulu this September.

Aloha!

Last summer I moved to the Seattle area after 14 years in Kailua on Oahu. I immediately fell in with the Cascadia Wikimedians User Group as it formed, joined its board and became its first president as well as the GLAM representative for Washington State.

Recently, Adriel Luis, Curator (Digital & Emerging Media) at the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, contacted me about setting up an edit-a-thon like the previous Wikipedia APA edit-a-thon. In addition to discussing one for Seattle, he wrote:

It's awesome to learn about your past in Honolulu - I'm actually going to be there for another SmithsonianAPA project mid September, and thinking that this could be an opportunity to do an event there as well! I have lots of contacts with UH and the museums, but do you know of any contacts on the Wikimedia side out there?

As I was working two jobs while I lived on Oahu, I did not have the opportunity to meet your or any other Wikipedians at the time. Hence, the reason why I am contacting you now.

If you would like to help, please contact me through one of these methods:

De-adminship warning[edit]

Dear Kaldari, I am writing to inform you that you are in danger of losing your adminship on Commons because of inactivity.

If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section/Aug-Sep 2015 within 30 days of today's date, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months. Anyone who does not do so will automatically lose administrator rights.

Re: Jim Morrison[edit]

There were some very detailed arguments presented at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Jim Morrison 1968.jpg, but you did not offer any explanation as to why you believed those arguments were valid or invalid. Carl presented 3 different US court cases showing that, according to US jurisprudence, derivative copyright protects only the new material contained in the derivative work, not the matter derived from the underlying work. Do you disagree with that assessment? If so, could you explain why? Kaldari (talk) 05:14, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Also, you should be aware that Joel Brodsky's estate is actively claiming copyright over this image: http://www.tmetta.com/brodsky.html, thus keeping this image on Commons may be putting the uploader and reusers at legal and financial risk. Kaldari (talk) 05:32, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Having accepted your appeal, next time, please avoid moving a file to be deleted soon, and avoid editing your post to my talk page too frequently in a short time. I had problems reading your post and deleting your questioned file.--Jusjih (talk) 19:42, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Sorry for the trouble. Kaldari (talk) 20:04, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I could claim copyright over an image of Jimi Hendrix. Doesn't make me the actual copyright holder. How exactly could they own a photograph copyrighted to 2006 when Jim Morrison actually died in 1971? Even if Brodsky took the photograph in the 1960s or whenever it was, proof was presented at the IFD that there was no registration for the photo for either Brodsky or Elektra Records. Of course Brodsky is going to claim copyright on it as it's probably a good source of income. It's a bullshit argument.Dr. Blofeld (talk) 13:52, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • I agree. A copyright claim on a public domain work is clearly invalid. Unless there's something that multiple editors missed during the two deletion reviews (a registration or renewal), I don't see how the claim can hold water. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 14:10, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • A supposed 2006 copyright claim of someone who died in 1971? Something is obviously screwy with that, and with yet another deletion on dubious grounds. - SchroCat (talk) 14:44, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
As has been explained several times, no copyright registration was necessary since the photo was first published after 1963. If anyone can provide an example of this photograph (not a derivative work) being published without a copyright notice before 1978 (as the license tag claimed), I'll be very happy to undelete it myself. As it stands, there is simply no evidence that this photograph is public domain, but there is evidence that someone is actively claiming copyright over it (even if the year is bogus). If you consent to the removal of the bot flag (or do not reply on the deflag page) you can rerequest the bot flag at Commons:Bots/Requests should you need it again. I came across this image today which you uploaded. Problem; I believe it's copyrighted. There is no freedom of panorama in the United States for three dimensional works of art. See Commons:Freedom_of_panorama#United_States. The statue was recently constructed, and thus automatically enjoys copyright protections whether so labeled, registered, or not. Given that its license is incompatible with Commons and being that you're an admin, would you be so kind as to delete the image? Thanks, --Hammersoft (talk) 13:27, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to copyright
File:Ionized Carbon Atoms in Orion (PIA21073).jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Spider taxonomy[edit]

Saludos.--MILEPRI (talk) 09:31, 5 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Reminder: Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2016 is open![edit]

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2016 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Kaldari,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eleventh edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.

Nephilidae demotion[edit]

I've been making fixes on the English Wikipedia for the demotion of the spider family Nephilidae to the subfamily Nephilinae, implicitly accepted by the World Spider Catalog since the genera now appear in Araneidae. Here, I created Category:Nephilinae and re-categorized appropriately, leaving a category redirect at Category:Nephilidae. I hope that was the right thing to do. There are two other categories that need fixing: Category:Videos of Nephilidae and Category:Unidentified Nephilidae, which I'm not sure how to handle. Can you please check what I've done and deal with anything else? I'm far from experienced in Commons editing. Peter coxhead (talk) 07:55, 15 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

abuse filter syntax question[edit]

Quick question. Is there the ability to combine contains_any and regex. I am more interested in managing case sensitivity for file extensions. Thanks for any help and my inability to work it out myself.  — billinghurst sDrewth 00:05, 15 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Billinghurst: I don't believe there's any way to combine contains_any and regex, but I also can't think of any situations where you would use contains_any that couldn't be handled by a regex instead. What specific problem are you trying to solve? Kaldari (talk) 00:18, 15 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
At enWS we have a problematic person uploading video files. Started as only webm, though starting to spread their wings. For many users unfamiliar with regex, I find "contains_any" easiest for admins to understand and to which to add. Thanks for uploading File:Shoemaker 1821.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Extended uploaders[edit]

Hi Kaldari, Over at Commons:Extended uploaders it said "'''Extended uploaders''' is a special [[:mw:Special:MyLangauge/Help:User rights and groups|user group]] for registered Commons users",
However when I clicked on "user group" it took me to a MW page however it says "No such special page" so I removed the "Special:MyLangauge/" part however I'm not sure if this was the correct thing to do so figured I'd leave a message incase you might understand it all and can perhaps fix it,

Category discussion warning

Chelonoidis nigra abingdoni has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Request to revise map for Cannabis laws[edit]

Hi Kaldari, the article for world cannabis laws has included a map . The colour for norway is wrong, as they have decriminalised all drugs as of December 2017.
I don't think I have the correct permissions to edit it myself as my Wikipedia account is only a couple hours old, so I am asking if you could change the colour of Norway to orange (illegal, decriminalised).
I will include two links, first the one to the Commons site where the particular map file is (the one I'd like you to change), and another one where I have changed the colour of Norway correctly.

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2017 is open![edit]

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2017 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in R2.

Dear Kaldari,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2017 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the twelfth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2017) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top 2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2017.

Round 2 will end on 22 July 2018, 23:59 UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 11:33, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

Walters Museum[edit]

Ryan, You did the upload of Walters Museum files. I wonder if you still have the metadata laying around somewhere so we could move that data to Wikidata. It looks like very few artworks from Walters Museum are on Wikidata. Alternative approach would be to reach out to User:Dylan k who seem to be still at Walters Museum, to get fresh copy of the data. Any thoughts? --Jarekt (talk) 14:04, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Jarekt, I'm willing to help with a fresh copy of the data, and may also have the original metadata laying around. How can I help? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dylan k (talk • contribs) 18:23, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I'm wishing you all the best for the New Year and I hope you're going to have many memorable photo opportunities in 2019. With 2018 coming to an end, it's time to look back at the past 12 months. I'm curious – what would you consider your best shot of 2018 and why? templatedata[edit]

He Kaldari, i'm just wondering about the changes on {{Information}} regarding templatedata you made. What triggered this, and what specifically was 'a mess' ? —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 10:20, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@TheDJ: The main problems were super long parameter descriptions, WikiText in the descriptions (which ends up being output as escaped HTML), no examples, and no format specified. Of these, all of them could have been fixed within TemplateBox except for the missing format. Rather than messing with the TemplateBox mess, I though it would be easier and clearer to just separate the TemplateData out. Plus that was the only way to specify the format, which needed to be set to 'block' (since otherwise the template defaulted to inline). I think Rillke started working on adding format support to Module:TemplateBox, but it hasn't been added yet. I'm fine with switching back to TemplateBox once that is done if people think it makes more sense. Kaldari (talk) 14:45, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Oh and the thing that triggered me changing it was seeing the following description of the "author" parameter in the TemplateWizard interface:

Original author of the file; where appropriate, use {{Creator:Name Surname}}. If the work is derived from or depicts works by someone other than the author, the author of the original work should also be mentioned. For example, for a photograph of a sculpture, make a mention of both the sculptor and the photographer. For vectorizing works, use the template {| | style="padding:0 4px;background-color:#CCF;width:12%" | Original: | style="width:38%" | <span lang="en">Unknown</span> | style="padding:0 4px;background-color:#CCF;width:12%" | Vector: | style="width:38%" | [[:User:test|test]] |}. If the author has submitted an OTRS ticket but prefers not to disclose his/her name, enter the word "Confidential". This field should ''not'' be used to specify the name of the person who is the scanner, finder, or uploader of the image; these things do not make them the author.

I changed it to just: "Original author of the file; where appropriate, use {{Creator:Name Surname}}." Kaldari (talk) 14:57, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
ping @Multichill: TheDJ (talkcontribs) 15:24, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@TheDJ: I just added format support to Module:TemplateBox, which seems to be working. TemplateBox still doesn't seem to support "suggested" as a general parameter status though. Maybe someone could investigate that. Basically, no one has updated the TemplateBox module in 5 years, so it's just outdated. Kaldari (talk) 15:28, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kaldari, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.

Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:

  1. You edited User:Kaldari/inat2commons.js. Glad to see you coding in javascript! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
  2. Though, that change appears to introduce 7 new jshint issues — the page's status is now having ERRORS. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.
  3. To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in javascript writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine. If you prefer not getting spammed by me, you can opt-out reports by adding {{ValidationOptOut|type=all}} to your user page or cmb-opt-out anywhere on your your global user page on Meta. Good luck at Wikimedia Commons and happy hacking!

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Metadata[edit]

Hi! I saw somewhere you fixed FAL template that had problems with missing meta data. Perhaps you can help me on lb.wiki?

I would like to empty lb:Kategorie:Fichieren ouni maschinneliesbar Lizenz and the other categories like it.

To do so I need to fix metadata per m: File metadata cleanup drive/How to fix metadata but I could use a little help.

I asked for help at m:Talk:File_metadata_cleanup_drive/How_to_fix_metadata#lb.wiki. If you know how and have a little time it would be nice if you could have a look.

Also I wonder if text like this "<div id="Schabloun_Bild-PD-al>" is needed on the license templates. You can see them all on lb:Kategorie:Schabloune fir Billerlizenzen but if someone help me fix a few I can do the rest. --MGA73 (talk) 11:10, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

About "Commons:Wikimedia OTRS release generator needs more translations"[edit]

Hi, I'm trying to create a Portuguese version of MediaWiki:Relgen.js/text, but I don't know where to "put" it. We don't have a "sandbox" here and I can't create one. What should I do? Regards--SirEdimon (talk) 04:43, 17 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@SirEdimon: You can just create it as a subpage of your user page: User:SirEdimon/Relgentext.js. Once it's done, let me know and I can move it into the proper place. Kaldari (talk) 15:40, 17 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I created it, but now I have several questions: 1 - Once published can I, eventually, edit it to correct some eventual errors? 2 - How can I see it "working" to evaluate the quality of the translation? 3 - I don't know if we, pt.wiki, have some specific e-mail to receive releases via OTRS, so I left the "general" e-mail. 4 - I translated "Jane Doe" and "Jane Doe" (a general name used when the true name of a person is unknown). I never heard the expression "Ace Inc.", but I assumed that it has the same use as "Jane Doe" and "Jane Doe" (used when the true name of a company is unknown). 5 - About the Commons:Freedom of panorama, I didn't adapt it to the Brazilian and Portuguese context because I wasn't sure (but it seems that both countries have the same policy, authorizing photographies of buildings, architecture, and sculptures). I, therefore, only translated the text about the United States, but I can't fix this if you give me more information. 6 - In "$1, am", I just translated "$1, sou", I hope it's fine. Thanks for your patience. If anything needs to be fixed or improved please let me know. Regards--SirEdimon (talk) 00:08, 18 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@SirEdimon: Question answers:
  1. No, but if you tell me what to change, I can change it for you.
  2. If your interface language is set to Portuguese in your preferences, you should see the Portuguese interface after I move it into place and the JavaScript cache clears (which could take a few days).
  3. I'm no longer an OTRS member, so I can't answer that. Perhaps AlvaroMolina could though.
  4. That's perfect.
  5. That sounds good. It looks like Portugal and Brazil both allow Freedom of Panorama, so no clarification about those countries should be needed.
  6. That is correct. The sentence is "I, John Doe, am the creator..."
Thanks for your work on this. As soon as we hear back from AlvaroMolina, I'll move it. Kaldari (talk) 00:35, 18 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
About the point 5, should we take out "Nos Estados Unidos, apenas obras arquitetônicas estão isentas dessa exigência" or should we replace it with something about the Brazil/Portugal context or, even, should we let it as it's now?--SirEdimon (talk) 01:27, 18 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@SirEdimon and Kaldari: Hi, most languages that are relatively well known have their own OTRS queue to receive permissions, in the case of the Portuguese, there are the emails permissions-pt@wikimedia.org and permissions-commons-pt@wikimedia.org. Looking at the standards that other translations of that page have followed (e.g.: MediaWiki:Relgen.js/i18n/it), you should put the "permissions-pt" email (in "photosubmission" I think there is no queue for the Portuguese version, so it should be kept photosubmission@wikimedia.org). Regards. —AlvaroMolina ( - ) 01:40, 18 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@SirEdimon: I've changed the email address per AlvaroMolina feedback above and also removed the sentence about the United States per your suggestion. I've now moved the page to the proper title, so it should start working soon. Kaldari (talk) 02:36, 18 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Kaldari, I was testing the "Wikimedia OTRS release generator" which I translated to Portuguese and it's only working for "Portuguese". When you change language selection to "Brazilian Portuguese" the "Wikimedia OTRS release generator" change its language to English. However, my translation could easily work for Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese. How can we change it to make it work for both languages? Regards.--SirEdimon Dimmi!!! 23:01, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@SirEdimon: I'm afraid I don't know the answer to that question. Perhaps FDMS4 does though. Kaldari (talk) 04:47, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have implemented a workaround that should fix relgen language fetching in such cases. Thanks for all the i18n assistance you provided!    FDMS  4    09:45, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Indonesian translation[edit]

I translated MediaWiki:Relgen.js/text into Indonesian language in my subpage (User:Lord Yeager/Relgentextid.js). Since i don't have the rights to edit MediaWiki pages, can you move it to the proper place (MediaWiki:Relgen.js/i18n/id)? Regards. -- Lord Yeager (talk) 12:04, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Lord Yeager: Done. Kaldari (talk) 12:52, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Request about User:Kaldari/inat2commons.js[edit]

Is it possible that this feature adds a license-template plus {{LicenseReview}} to the upload? That would be awesome. Now it has to be added manually. Thanks. Lymantria (talk) 14:52, 20 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Lymantria: Good idea. I just added {{LicenseReview}}. Kaldari (talk) 04:42, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Lymantria (talk) 06:42, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Just a remark and perhaps it is difficult: the license template, like {{Cc-0}}, is not added while I think the license of the image is detected... Can you look into that? Kind regards, Lymantria (talk) 14:47, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Lymantria: It does add the license template. It just isn't part of the Summary in the form. Kaldari (talk) 14:56, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I tried and this was the result... Is it I did something wrong? Lymantria (talk) 15:50, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Lymantria: That's really weird. I just tried it myself with the same observation and it worked fine. After you click on the "Upload image" button from the image preview, what URL does it take you to exactly? Kaldari (talk) 16:31, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly [1]. I see that it mentions the license, perhaps it's a browser problem (I use Firefox)? Lymantria (talk) 16:34, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I tried Chrome, and with Chrome it works fine indeed... Lymantria (talk) 16:37, 21 May 2020 (UTC) P.S. I run LymaBot at Chrome and language setting is English for my bot[reply]
Stranger still, I changed my default language from Dutch to English, and now it works. Lymantria (talk) 16:41, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Lymantria: I see the problem. The Dutch version of the upload form doesn't have cc-by-4.0 as a license option! I'll see if I can fix this. Kaldari (talk) 16:59, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Lymantria: It should work in Dutch now. Thanks for bringing that to my attention! Kaldari (talk) 17:24, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Solved indeed! Great! Thanks. Lymantria (talk) 20:04, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Commons Photographers User Group: Meeting on May 30, 2020[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I’d like to invite you to our group’s first Virtual Meeting on Saturday, May 30, 2020. The meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Please take a look at the meeting page and add your name to the list of participants if you’re planning to attend.

Hope to see you in a week! All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 16:43, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Science Competition prize[edit]

I see you removed those categories but it's the convention here that a map of current Belize (regardless of whether Belize existed then) should go as a map of Belize. Germany for example didn't exist in its current form until the mid 19th-century. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 23:42, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Ricky81682: I agree with you and I don't recall removing any categories. Can you be more specific about what categories you are referring to? Kaldari (talk) 23:48, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This edit -- Ricky81682 (talk) 00:08, 18 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Ricky81682: I just removed the "Works in Belize" category since none of these maps are actually from Belize or in Belize. Although they are maps of Belize, almost all of them were created in Europe or the United States and reside in Europe or the United States. Also, Category:Works in Belize by year doesn't actually exist. Kaldari (talk) 00:17, 18 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Commons Photographers User Group: Meeting on September 26 and other stuff[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I've got a quick update for you, containing three items:

  • I’d like to invite you to our group’s second Virtual Meeting on Saturday, September 26, 2020. As last time, this meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic. If you'd like to present, please add your name and the proposed topic to the list on the talk page.
  • Also, I'd like to start a conversation about how we should be sharing responsibility for the user group going forward. I'd love to get some help when it comes to organizing things and I'm convinced that we can achieve more if a couple of people helped with coordinating stuff.
  • Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has asked me to spread the word about their latest survey: Universal Code of Conduct Survey. The goal is to create a safer environment on Wikimedia projects and the Foundation gathers feedback prior to coming up with a first draft.

Hope to see you at the Zoom meeting in September!

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 18:44, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

File:Phidippus clarus 46803583.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

@MGA73: Oops! Next time I'll wait. Thanks for letting me know. Kaldari (talk) 20:00, 8 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Great! Because it seems that the review script does not support iNaturalistreview so we have to do some manual review untill we figure out hot to fix the script. --MGA73 (talk) 20:02, 8 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Reminder: User Group Meeting this Saturday[edit]

Dear Commons Photographers User Group member,

This is a quick reminder that our second virtual meeting will take place this Saturday, September 26. The agenda entails presentations about drone photography, about the story behind a featured picture, and about the future of LRMediaWiki. We'll also discuss photographers’ contacts with the Wikimedia Foundation and the election of representatives for our user group. You'll find information about all of this on the event page:

I'm also inviting you to share some information about yourself and your photography work with other members of the user group on our new membership list:

I hope you're well during these difficult times. All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 15:50, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello&question[edit]

Hello kaldari. Thank you for your notice on my page which is very instructive and a decent sermon as against those who treated me harshly, despite my cobcern that philippine copyright and fair use style laws are not agreeable to wikis according to a facebook users comment. Hence i sounded the alarm here about the photos that bear copyrighted bldgs and sculptures and otherss. But i will respect your notice. I wont make any new deletion requests until a couple of them are done.

One question. Are wikimedia com. And the wikipedia encyclopedia the same or are they different. I noticed some photos there with no logo of your website which is wikimedia commons. Why theres no such logo that also links them here? If same then no question. If different then is the encylopedias governing freedom of pano principle the same or not? ----

Your file has been nominated for a Media of the Day.

Your contribution to this project has been noticed. A file 1874 Pierre Jules César Janssen - Passage de Venus.webm, which was uploaded by you, has been nominated to be displayed on the Main Page of this project as a Media of the Day. You can view this and other nominations at Commons talk:Media of the day. It is always a good idea to let other contributors know when you think your file would look good as a featured media file, provide descriptions in different languages, and perhaps spread the joy by nominating media of other uploaders, that you believe deserve that. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 06:00, 28 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Your most memorable shot 2020[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

Over the course of the past two years, we've been sharing pictures that have a special meaning with each other at the start of the new year. Today, I'm inviting you add your most memorable shot of 2020 to this page:

I hope you, your familiy, and your friends are well during these difficult times. I wish you all the best for 2021 and I can't wait to see what your most memorable shot of 2020 looks like.

Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Wikimedia Commons![edit]

Dear Kaldari

Thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC.

After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy (available in many languages) that has been ratified by the Board of Trustees. We’re currently in the second phase of the process. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the implementation of this policy. As a member of the functionary team of Wikimedia Commons, your opinion on enforcement is of great value. We want to hear from you on how this policy can be enforced on the Wikimedia Commons community and what might be needed to do so. There are a few enforcement questions so you can easily outline your answers based on them. Please do not hesitate to bring any more questions/challenges you think are not yet discussed.

The discussion is taking place on Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. You can also share your thoughts by replying to this message (Please ping me so I get notified), posting your message on my talk page. I am aware that some thoughts cannot be expressed publicly, so you can always share your opinion by emailing me as well.

As a valued member of the Commons community, please share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences that relate to UCoC. Let us know what needs to be improved so we can build a more friendly and cooperative space to increase editor engagement and retention of new users.

Wikimedia projects are governed by you. So, it is you who needs to step up to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pleasant working environment.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please take a short survey regarding UCoC[edit]

Hello Kaldari,

I would like to inform you that we now have a survey in place to take part in the UCoC consultation. It is not a long one and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. You can take the survey even if you have already participated in the on-wiki consultation. It has a different set of questions and allows you to participate anonymously and privately.

As a member of the Commons functionaries, your opinion is especially essential. Please click here to participate in the survey.

You are still welcome to participate in the on-wiki discussions. If you prefer you can have your say by sending me an email. You can also drop me an email if you want to have a one-to-one chat.

Thank you for your participation! Wikitanvir (WMF) 13:54, 12 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.

Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.

If you're interested in joining this meeting, please sign up on the page below:

Also, don't forget to post your question(s) prior to the meeting on the following page in order to ensure a good and fruitful question-and-answer session:

I'm very much looking forward to this event and I hope you'll be able to join.

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:34, 15 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

For better or worse, Mahammad tt is correct that Commons does not require maps to be "correct" or backed by reliable sources to be hosted here. In cases where there is a dispute about a map, we host all the different versions of the map as separate files and let the various Wikipedias decide which one to use. The discussions about which map is correct should take place on the Wikipedia projects, not here. Under no circumstances should you replace a disputed map with a new version because you disagree with it, even if all the reliable sources say it is wrong. You are both guilty of doing this and you both need to stop. I will be reverting the various maps back to their original state and protecting them. You are free to upload whatever alternate versions you want as separate files. You are also free to tag maps with {{Inaccurate-map-disputed}}. Edit warring, however, is strictly prohibited. Thanks for your cooperation. Kaldari (talk) 15:32, 11 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've not replaced any map with a new version in years. Fair enough that you are doing this but don't categorize him with me. Still, this has not addressed his attempts to continue with what he did in Wikipedia [6] [7]. --HistoryofIran (talk) 17:41, 11 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What has the English Wikipedia got to do with this? This issue has also been resolved.Isn't it better to do your job instead of blocking me? Mahammad tt (talk) 17:50, 11 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Kaladari This user has started an editing war against me again. My edits are correct and I emphasize them and I can't watch this anti-Turkic user undo all my edits. Please help. Mahammad tt (talk) 21:10, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Reminder: Commons Photographers meeting tomorrow[edit]

Just a quick reminder: the meeting with large format-photographer Ben Horne will happen tomorrow, Saturday, March 20. If you haven't done yet, please consider signing up for the event and add your questions to this page. This will be our first virtual meeting in 2021 and I'd be super happy if you could join. All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 16:35, 19 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Import from iNaturalist[edit]

Hello,

I do a lot of naturalist articles on the various Wiki projects and I often look for illustrations of rare species on the useful iNaturalist site. However, faced with the mass, I am looking for a simple tool that would allow me, from the iNaturalist ID, to directly import the photo with all the data without painstakingly copying everything by hand in the upload wizard, which takes considerable time. This exists for FlickR, so it must be possible. However, the two tools that exist work by taxa, not by already selected observations, so they don't help me at all. Do you know how I could avoid spending 15 minutes per photo when I have 200 to upload?

Thank you very much and best regards,

FredD (talk) 13:26, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@FredD: I don't know of any tools in particular that can do what you want, but it sounds like a good idea for someone to implement. Kaldari (talk) 00:47, 26 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Kaldari. So sad ! I'd thank you to spread the good word to people able of making such thing. Cheers, FredD (talk) 07:04, 26 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Kaldari, a user I don't know what problem he has with South Azerbaijanis has secrets to remove the South Azerbaijani flag from Turkish ethnic groups.[8][9] Please warn this user to stop this working. Mahammad tt (talk) 10:25, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Mahammad tt is a vadalism-only account who spreads pan-Turkist agenda, as well as proved sockpuppet on Persian Wikipedia. Likely User:Tarik289 who played with the same files and recently got blocked on Commons. --Orijentolog (talk) 12:41, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

User:Orijentolog, The slanders that this user is accusing me of are without reason and against the rules of Wikipedia. In Persian Wikipedia, my account has been closed for no reason. I even asked to open my account and said that my account was closed for no reason, But no one was responsible, the Azerbaijanis of Iran are part of the Turkic ethnic groups, what does this mean for you? Mahammad tt (talk) 13:52, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I answered to Mahammad tt on his own user page, so I hope we won't annoy Kaldari or others any more. --Orijentolog (talk) 14:56, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Great idea, user with hundreds of thousands edits can be blocked because he reverted and discouraged a proven sockpuppet. Few weeks ago I put various marginal flags and maps on my watchlist, from the Balkans to the Middle East, and I was reverting manipulators. Sometimes once, twice, sometimes even 10 times (i.e. "edit warring"). An alternative was to beg administrators around to protect pages, some 20-30 times. But OK, if you disagree, I'll alarm you personally in future. Btw, there are various marginal "South Azerbaijan" flags used by various marginal groups, so in description it was needed to describe which group one use it. Otherwise someone may assume it's some serious political entity, like Kosovo, Transnistria, etc. Such description is sourced by scholarly article sponsored by the official Azerbaijan government. --Orijentolog (talk) 16:42, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Orijentolog: Thank you for your efforts to prevent manipulation of Commons files. If you see someone substantially changing an existing file, you are welcome to revert it, but if it turns into a dispute, let me know rather than edit warring. I will revert the file and protect it. Regarding file descriptions, Commons does have a Neutral point of view policy which states that "neutrality of description should be aimed at wherever possible". When describing flags, maps, or other files that are subject to political disputes, the description should be as neutral as possible. In other words, it should be a description that would be considered accurate by either side of the dispute. Terms such as "irredentist" are rarely appropriate. Kaldari (talk) 16:52, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. I actually never changed someone's map, just I was restoring original uploader's or stable version, especially after edits by unreliable users. And especially if maps are realistic and in usage on some other projects. As I understood, Commons as file hosting site can have any kind of images, only I care about is proper categorization and proper description, but we disagree a bit about the latter. For the case of neutrality, I believe it is necessary to notice it's foreign-based group, and for the same reason I put a similar description here.
Beside above-mentioned Kosovo and Transnistria, let me give you another practical example: would it be proper to put this flag under the gallery of the Iranian peoples, with description "Flag of Kurds in Turkey"? IMHO, no. It's an ideological flag used by the PKK, which doesn't have a majority support of Kurds in Turkey. It's still a very serious organization which is waging a decades-long war in which tens of thousands of people have died. Describing it here as "terrorist" IMHO would not be proper, but "separatist" is absolutely fine (pure facts). The same goes for symbols of self-declared separatist parties in Europe.
The cases of "South Azerbaijan" and "Free Talysh" movements are completely different from all above. There are no any political entities, recognized or unrecognized. There are no any rebellions, armed movements, political parties or secret organizations. Nothing. There are just two one-man-shows, one Baku/USA-based and second Hague-based. Therefore, I believe it's needed to be mentioned. Otherwise, someone may took it as realistic material, and that's precisely the idea of Mahammad tt who was trying to represent such flag on a par with the Scottish and Welsh national flags. --Orijentolog (talk) 18:18, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Orijentolog: Commons doesn't care if a flag represents a 500-year old nation or a single person's imagination. There are no requirements for a flag or map on Commons to be accurate or sourced. I could upload a flag of Kaldariland and if it gets used on a project, it stays on Commons. The description doesn't need to legitimize or delegitimize the image (or the concept behind it). If the flag doesn't represent a recognized entity, use the {{Fictitious flag}} template. As for galleries, their content needs to be resolved by discussion on the talk page. Notice that Talk:Flags of Turkic ethnic groups is a redlink. You should be making your case there, not on user talk pages. Personally, I think "Flags of XXX ethnic groups" is a terrible idea for a gallery (as ethnic groups are typically not legal entities and thus do not officially have flags) and the page should just be deleted. Commons is an image repository, not a place for political battles. Kaldari (talk) 19:52, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I understand, I was saying the same thing to Mahammad tt (citation: My kindly advice: if you see disputable maps, don't try to change it, but put a template it's disputed and some explanation with proper sources i.e. on talk). Of course I don't have problems with incorrect maps and fictional flags, and I don't advocate deleting or changing, for me only categorization matters (descriptions are closely related). I dislike to open some category of real political entity and find childish fictional symbols meddled with official and historical flags. That's it. And I do absolutely agree that "Flags of XXX ethnic groups" is a terrible idea for a gallery, I'm disgusted when they bring politics here. My hobby at Commons is just identification, locating, periodization and dating of Middle Eastern art and architecture (in parallel with strict referencing via Wikidata). --Orijentolog (talk) 21:17, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Orijentolog I'm not a Panturk and I don't have the thoughts that you are saying. I just wanted the Azerbaijanis of Iran to be there like the Azerbaijanis of Iraq. only this😑 Mahammad tt (talk) 13:28, 9 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Mahammad tt is still continuing his disruptive edit warring [10] --HistoryofIran (talk) 11:25, 11 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@HistoryofIran: I have blocked Mahammad tt for one week. Kaldari (talk) 05:08, 12 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately the block did not change his conduct [11] --HistoryofIran (talk) 16:54, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have blocked the account for 1 month. Kaldari (talk) 19:37, 20 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I answered here, and I can be a bit more comprehensive:

  1. User Mahammad tt was blocked because of edit warring (twice, by you), not me.
  2. People don't complain because of my edits, but because of the other user, Mahammad tt.
  3. One revert is not edit war at all. Technically it was a proper edit, removing four categories among which two are OVERCAT, one incorrect and one non-existent. Check it yourself. Are you saying I'm not allowed to do that?
  4. Speaking of other problematic user, last time when we had conversation here, he got calm and did nothing further. But some two weeks later, again he started reverting to his POV, thinking it will pass unnoticed. But it did not. This time he waited more than three months and engaged in edit wars with three different users.

Therefore, how come that I got warning, not him? --Orijentolog (talk) 20:01, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Orijentolog: Your initial removal of the categories was fine. Reverting the revert without discussion is edit warring. End of argument. And for the record, I blocked Mahammad tt a third time for edit warring, so you shouldn't be upset that you just got a warning. Kaldari (talk) 20:17, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Situation seems fine and I'm not upset at all. :) But it's strange for me that one simple revert of problematic user is "edit warring," given that he was also reverted by other users and all of his edits are actually POV reverts. I do understand policies like 3RR or even 1RR in 24 h for some political hot topics on Wikipedia, but claiming zero-revert rule (0RR) in four months for Commons is truly draconian. One revert should always be fine (if proper), especially if it sends message "I see you" to vandals. Think about it. --Orijentolog (talk) 20:47, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

License migration of GFDL[edit]

Hi! Looooong ago you started Commons:License Migration Task Force and I have migrated about a million files since then. Both on Commons and other wikis. I found a few wikis that still had files that was not yet migrated so I thought I could finish those. But I can't remember what we decided to do with files with an OTRS. Do we always set those as not-eligible or do we migrate them if uploaded before November 2008? Can you remember? --MGA73 (talk) 13:16, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@MGA73: I don't remember specifically, but I imagine we would migrate them if uploaded before November 2008. I don't see a good reason why we wouldn't. Thanks for your continued work on this! Kaldari (talk) 14:03, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Yeah I was thinking the same. But users that upload files to Wikipedia and Commons got a notice about the license update so they had a chance to opt out if they did not agree. Users that have given permission via OTRS have not recieved such a notice. So I was wondering if that would make a difference. Well if they disagree they can of course always send a mail. :-) --MGA73 (talk) 14:19, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

We need your feedback![edit]

Hello. Apologies if this message is not in your native language: please feel free to respond in the language of your choice. Thank you!

I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.

We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.

Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.

Also, if you want to keep in touch with us or you want to know more about the project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.

Hope to hear from you soon! -- Sannita (WMF) (talk to me!) 09:56, 2 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Help[edit]

Hi, please check the status of these files (1) and (2). Thanks.--Frvuz (talk) 12:37, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

First admins should check an obvious fact that Frvuz is a sockpuppet of Mahammad tt, because only 30 hours after he got blocked last time, he opened two new accounts (Yakup.Yz & Frvuz) and continued with the same behavior. --Orijentolog (talk) 03:31, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have already explained to you (here) that my account has nothing to do with Mahammad tt. But you are still slandering. However, your account has already been blocked on other wikis, including the English wiki, for abusing multiple accounts, and "Qahramani44" is probably your illegitimate account.--Frvuz (talk) 09:54, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You can claim many things but you can not deny the obvious. Your former account Mahammad tt got blocked three times, by the intervention of Kaldari, and you knew very well that any further disruption will result with new and stricter blocks. Therefore, only 30 hours after the latest block, you opened new account User:Yakup.Yz and used it only for repetitive ethnic insults [14][15]. Five hours later, you opened yet another account Frvuz (you personally admitted it's yours) and continued with the same misbehavior, for which account Mahammad tt was blocked:
And you dare to claim these are different persons? Additional proof of connection is that immediately after I reverted your disruptions, you started with canvassing Kaldari both on targeted files [16][17], as well as here. There is also no even theoretical possibility that a new user would do such a thing. You were canvassing Kaldari because you assumed that I'm not allowed to make reverts, considering there was a confusion with me and Mahammad tt. Well, for your great surprise, established users like me are perfectly allowed to make reverts of disruptions, and no Commons' rule against it. I wasn't breaking 3RR in 24 h. I know it well, Kaldari knows it, but you don't. That's why you expected that I'll get into the trouble and your sockpuppetry will pass unnoticed.
Speaking of manipulative accusations that User:Qahramani44 is my sockpuppet, it's not true. I give my word about it. It can be easily proved by Wikimedia tools (requests for checkuser), and if any connection is established, I give Kaldari right to block me here, also asks for a global block, and freely delete everything I uploaded. Would you accept the same? Your anachronistic tu quoque attempts are miserable, indeed twelve years ago I had disputes with individuals who were blocked in the meanwhile, because I understood manipulators far before admins did. But that's not relevant here. I'm contributing here for over twelve years, I have some 150,000 contributions, and I was never blocked. On the contrary, you're not doing anything productive here. --Orijentolog (talk) 19:52, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Orijentolog I give full permission to the Checkusers to check my account, as I said before, I have no problem with that.
Ok? Can you not waste my time with baseless and false accusations? Mahammad tt (talk) 21:19, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
File:Jane Austen coloured version.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

HotArticlesBot discussion[edit]

Hi Kaldari, there's an ongoing discussion over on Wikipedia as to whether HotArticlesBot is being actively maintained, needs to be actively maintained and potentially, if you are retired to the point of not monitoring the bot, if you might be able to appoint a co-maintainer. Logo for Wiki Science Competition

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017 and Wiki Science Competition 2019, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2021 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), but it's still open in almost all the other countries.

If you want to take part in WSC2021, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, that is "astronomy".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

De-adminship warning (Feb 2022)[edit]

This talk page in other languages:

Dear Kaldari. I am writing to inform you that you are in danger of losing your admin rights and also additional permissions (bureaucrat/oversighter/checkuser/interface-admin), if any, on Commons because of inactivity.

If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section/Feb-Mar 2022 before 11th March, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months. Anyone who does not do so will automatically lose their rights.

You can read the de-admin policy at Commons:Administrators/De-adminship.

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you,

You're invited to provide input…[edit]

Dear fellow member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

At our last meeting end of August, we talked about getting in touch with the Wikimedia Foundation and offering our help for improving Wikimedia Commons. Today, I invite you to provide your input on a draft open letter to the Foundation. Over the course of the next ten days, we'll further improve the text together, before inviting people to sign it. If you're interested in providing input, please engage in the discussion on the talk page of the draft.

In the meanwhile, I hope you're well and have a great time taking photos! All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 08:42, 20 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Question from the CPUG Board[edit]

Dear user group member,

I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.

With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.

That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.

However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:

Commons:Commons Photographers User Group/Board Elections 2022

We'll gather feedback until December 27, and we'll keep you in the loop about the outcomes of this process.

Thanks so much for your ongoing support of our group. I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best.

Most memorable shot 2022 / Wikimania 2023[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I wish you a Happy New Year! As it has been our tradition at the beginning of the new year for a while, we're sharing our most memorable shots of the past year with each other. I invite you to share a picture that is particular meaningful to you and to describe why that's the case. Also, as Wikimania 2023 will be here before we know it (August 16 to 19), please consider adding your thoughts on our planning page, where we gather ideas for how we can make Commons photography more visible than in the years before.

All the best to you, your family, and friends! --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:01, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Pardon, what's your feel of this SRCU request affects yourself? Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 13:05, 6 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Bumping? It looks like your past admin actions are currently listing at m:User:Marshallsumter? Hopefully you may answer this little concern after your admin confirm made 9 days ago. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 04:40, 27 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

De-admin warning[edit]

Dear Kaldari. I am writing to inform you that you are in danger of losing your admin rights on Commons because of inactivity.

If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section/Feb-Mar 2023 before 13 March, and also to make at least 5 further admin actions in the following 6 months. Anyone who does not do so will automatically lose their rights.

You can read the de-admin policy at Commons:Administrators/De-adminship.

Thank you! -- MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:35, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, There is a copy of this work with much higher resolution on File:Ottoman Manuscript Atlas, by Piri Reis (W658 000001).jpg (davidrumsey.com). I started downloading and converting images to JPEG (they are on JPEG2000 format there), when I noticed your files. Is there a way to avoid uploading duplicates? Thanks, Yann (talk) 10:09, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Error with Mediaviews Analysis?[edit]

Hi there! I hope you are doing well. I noticed that you are one of the three programmers that developed the Pageview Analysis tool. So recently Mediaviews Analysis keeps showing the error message: "Error querying Media requests API - Not Found" for several old files (files uploaded > 1 day). Is there any ongoing improvement to this tool? Thanks. Đại Việt quốc (talk) 13:18, 3 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, Wiki Science Competition 2019 and Wiki Science Competition 2021, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2023 has started in almost all the countries.

If you want to take part in WSC2023, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase (such as Russia), please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2024.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you[edit]

Dear fellow Commons photographer,

I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.

At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 19:36, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Participation in North American Hub research[edit]

Hello, Kaldari! I'm writing on behalf of the North American hub research committee to see if you would be interested in participating in a one hour focus group. During the session, we will discuss how a potential hub could support Commons contributors by providing services such as professional development and grant support. Our research phase is ending very soon (12/31). I apologize for the short notice. If there's any chance you can join us for a meeting on 12/20 @ 1pm ET, please respond to Ariel.Cetrone at wikidc.org. Thanks for considering -Ariel Cetrone (WMDC) (talk) 18:40, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question about Massviews to help improve the documentation[edit]

Hi

I had a question about Massviews to help researchers/partner organisations use it (I want to write some documentation to help them), I wondered if you knew the answer?

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Pageviews_Analysis#How_to_use_massviews_to_search_for_all_English_Wikipedia_pages_which_use_references_from_a_source?

Thanks very much
