Image admissibility

I've read through the documentation on Wikipedia relevant to image uploads and licensing and I had pretty much convinced myself that "public domain" would fairly apply to the image I want to share, but when I used the Wizard at Commons, an explanatory diagram indicated a narrower definition of what can be accepted. Can someone help me determine whether and how this image should be submitted?

https://64.media.tumblr.com/2f65c8506132203ba6da7ead983ca3c1/34c504f68c98a0c7-ef/s1280x1920/23add087a49cff74ebc613276da95249e11a5401.jpg

It's all over the web; this is just one URL.

P.S. I would be uploading a cropped version of the image shown there.

Al Begamut (talk) 14:24, 1 October 2023 (UTC)

@Al Begamut: That would violate this license from Off The Map for Vince Muci's photo per this backgrounder.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:23, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
(edit-conflict) That image may be "widely available to the public", but that has nothing to do with a "public domain license". Unless you are the photographer, or the actual photographer has explicitly written that they are releasing it, or it is many decades old, it is not acceptable on commons. DMacks (talk) 15:24, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
@Al Begamut: I recommend reading public domain. And @DMacks: public domain is not a license. A license is granted by a rights-holder and grants certain subsidiary rights. For a public domain image, the rights are general, and no one in particular owns them. Jmabel ! talk 19:12, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
While it's obviously true that "public domain" is a status, rather than a license, it does affect licensing especially as pertains to commons policy. And "PD" tags are often explicitly referred to as "license" tags. DMacks (talk) 07:20, 2 October 2023 (UTC)

Use of an image

Hello, I'm interested in using an image for publishing that is listed as open domain. Is it possible to obtain a higher resolution image than what is available on the site for printing and/or publishing purposes? I'm sure I would have to contact the source, but in this case the source is listed as "Air service, United States Army photograph". Any way to get more specific with the source location? Geogan57 (talk) 13:03, 2 October 2023 (UTC)

@Geogan57: Hello, A search returns 610 images with the string "Air service, United States Army photograph". Anyway, many seem sourced from an history work available at the U.S. National Archives. You could see if your image is on their website and ask them if they have a better version. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:16, 2 October 2023 (UTC)

License for NAVA meeting flags

I made a SVG version of the flag of the 34th NAVA meeting (in Lansing, Michigan). I'm not quite sure what license to give the image. The Talk page for NAVA has 1 topic started by Zscout370 which claims that we "got authorization from NAVA to use the meeting flags, past and present, on Wikipedia." He also states that you "can use the license at Image:Flag of NAVA.svg on the images." Leopard969 (talk) 16:54, 2 October 2023 (UTC)

@Thakergroup: Please do not upload such images; they're out of scope. You might wanna change your name too, as it indicates you're a paid editor, and you're not here to help the project. See the username policy for context. 20 upper 07:56, 3 October 2023 (UTC)
@Thakergroup and 20 upper: actually the relevant username policy is Commons:Username policy. This is Wikimedia Commons, not the English-language Wikipedia. - Jmabel ! talk 15:31, 3 October 2023 (UTC)
In particular, unlike the English-language Wikipedia, Commons does allow organizational names as account names, but you need to verify the account. Please see the page I linked in the previous comment. - Jmabel ! talk 15:38, 3 October 2023 (UTC)
Also, absolutely do read en:WP:COI (on conflicts of interest) and, as noted above, en:WP:Paid editing. You are likely to find yourself blocked on en-wiki if you don't overtly declare your conflicts of interest. Also, this account name should not be used on en-wiki, because while it can be "made good" by verifying on Commons, en-wiki simply does not allow such names. - Jmabel ! talk 15:38, 3 October 2023 (UTC)

Can I upload a picture of a news article from a newspaper?

I have searched 'newspaper articles' and I see there are quite a few pictures of articles already uploaded but I want to be sure. I don't see it listed as an ok picture to upload and as it is not created by me I think it is best I ask first. Otari (talk) 04:05, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

Most of those images of enrire articles are in the public domain due to copyright being expired. Beeblebrox (talk) 04:30, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
Thanks. I guess a news article from 1996 would still be subject to copyright? I have the photo (scan) of the article from the newspaper but I can't link to
the actual article on a website because the newspaper doesn't exist any more. Otari (talk) 04:36, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
@Otari: Yes, an article from 1996 would almost certainly still be under copyright and most likely would not be allowed.
(Just to be clear, if you want to cite a news article as a source on Wikipedia, you don't need to link to an online version. All you need to do is provide bibliographic information such as the title, author, and date of the article, and the name of the newspaper.) Anon126 ( ) 07:49, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

- Jmabel ! talk 15:30, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

I am the grandson of Zenon Bancer ( id pics included ) and I would like to post some pictures of my dear grandpa when he was still living. These are pictures of only my grandpa and no one else

I have a lot of pictures that would really make this profile https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zenon_Bancer because his family for whatever reason has failed to do so. These are SFW pictures of my grandpa in the US (NYC in the late 80s and early 90s) When he was working for Marek Cecula https://ceramicartsnetwork.org/ceramics-monthly/ceramics-monthly-article/Marek-Cecula-Global-Clay-Prophet. Marek is a good man and he gave me a job at his Soho NY Prince st and Sullivan St ceramics studio in which I worked from the age of 16 until the age of 18. The reason why I didn't tend to my grandfather during his battle with blood cancer was because I was battling my own massive UTI infection and was unable to go from one hospital to another, I am sure his family has a different outake on the situation but it's mainly because my mother divorced their son Piotr BakBancer due to heavy cheating, and spousal abuse and child abuse but I regress. Anyway this is about my grandfather and not his family. Here are the pics of my state ID Poland and my disability ID Poland, I am a dual citizen of United States of America and Poland : https://files.catbox.moe/3tm0m9.jpeg and https://files.catbox.moe/ce1ond.jpeg I used a free upload pic service because I am unable to attach pictures to this question here at wikimedia, org RalphAB (talk) 12:24, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

Fixing images with undefined/incorrect colour space declarations

Hi. There are a few hundred uploads by User:ThailandPhoto that have the colour space undefined or incorrectly defined, resulting in weird colour rendering on many browsers. See the original version of File:Bangkok Benjakiti Park 2.jpg, for example, which shows up like this. It seems like the fix should be a fairly simple matter of editing the metadata to have the correct colour space declared, which should be possible to batch process using a command line application, but I have no idea how to actually do that. Any advice? (I previously asked at COM:BR, but given the lack of response there it seems some manual work is in order.) --Paul_012 (talk) 20:54, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

Ah, it appears that these are CMYK Jpegs, which have limited support. Help:JPEG#Color model and Commons:Village pump/Archive/2016/10#JPEG files with CMYK colour profile both suggest that they'll need to be manually converted (with some unavoidable quality loss). Would still appreciate if someone knows a way to batch-process these. --Paul_012 (talk) 08:27, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

ImageMagick or GraphicsMagick will easily do this, but I don't know how to apply those to uploaded photos on Commons. I suspect it would mean download; convert on someone's computer; batch upload for the overwrite. - Jmabel ! talk 18:14, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

I uploaded a pdf document and I do not know why it has been deleted.

I an new user and I uploaded a a document on a new topic and I believed that I was not going against any of the regulations but it seems I have since my document has been requested fir deletion. I would like to know why and how I can get it back up. Could someone explain this to me please. Thank you. VolunteerKayla (talk) 09:48, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

@VolunteerKayla: The file (File:The Baytree Centre Wikipedia Page.pdf) was nominated for deletion because it's not the kind of thing that Commons is for. Specifically, Commons:Project scope explicitly excludes "Encyclopedia articles" and "Files that contain nothing educational other than raw text". File:The Baytree Centre Wikipedia Page.pdf is both of those, so it's not something that should be hosted on Commons. --bjh21 (talk) 10:18, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
@Bjh21 Thank you for your reply! I understand now but is there another part of Wikipedia where I could upload it where I would not be violating any regulations? VolunteerKayla (talk) 14:20, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
@VolunteerKayla: As Omphalographer explained to you twice on Commons:Deletion requests/File:The Baytree Centre Wikipedia Page.pdf, if you want to create a Wikipedia article, you'll have to do that on Wikipedia, following Wikipedia's procedures. For the English Wikipedia, en:Help:Your first article is the place to start reading about that. You'd need to (1) be confident that your subject is notable as defined by Wikipedia and (2) write the article in Wikipedia rather uploading a PDF file. If your subject isn't notable, then there's no place on Wikipedia for an article about it. --bjh21 (talk) 16:17, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

Befuddled!

I search for Pablo Casals and get a stream of unrelated images. Worse, attempting to use the 'search' windows does not help, and the 'slide show' feature seems to have disappeared. I want images of Pablo Casals {the cellist} taken in Israel in 1973: how do I go about searching for them? Cheers! Shir-El too (talk) 19:08, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

@Shir-El too Have you looked at Category:Pau Casals? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:29, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
No, I haven't. Will try again and see what happens. Cheers! Shir-El too (talk) 19:39, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
Thank you very much! However, there is too much room for confusion. Some images did come up under 'Pablo Casals' - so shouldn't there be a link or notice to also search under 'Pau Casals'? That may have been his birth name, but it WASN'T the name he was most known by. Cheers! Shir-El too (talk) 19:46, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
If you had looked at Category:Pablo Casals, you would have found that it is a redirect to Category:Pau Casals. There's more than one search tool on here, so I don't know which one you are configured to use, but only a handful of people have any control over what results the search engines produce. That's one of the reasons that, besides using a search engine, it is often really worth going straight for any obvious category: categories are curated by humans, and some things humans often do better than computers. - Jmabel ! talk 21:03, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
@Shir-El too: FWIW, when I search on "Pablo Casals" the first hit I get is the page Pau Casals, which would take me at one further click to Category:Pau Casals. Did you have that page at the top or your result and ignore it, or are you on a different search engine that did not give you that page as a first hit? - Jmabel ! talk 21:06, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: I honestly don't remember. Using the link @Gråbergs Gråa Sång sent me I did find specific results, though not what I hoped to find. If this means trouble, it might have to be removed...

Dear team, I just started contributing and theres one image that might be a problem. I attended a WikiCon in Austria and we had the permission to take pictures at a museum we visited. I took a picture of a picture which was on display there and shows a Tardigrada. The picture was taken with the help of an electron microscope and would be excellent to illustrate what is possible in this realm. What to do now? Call the muesum and ask for official permission - and a name to be published with the picture? Delete it to keep out of trouble? I'm not an expert regarding all the copyright and licensing stuff, so I ask for your opinion. If you think speedy removal is the only option, let me know what would have to be done in preparation to allow the display of pictures taken of exibitions (which permit fotos to be taken). Thank you in advance, best Llydia

Rulers Without Numbers or Units Considered Harmful

please pardon the voice dictation on my mobile device.

I've been browsing images such as this,

, and as you can see, this biomedical photo helpfully includes a ruler for scale.

I found at least one other, where enough of the ruler markings were visible that I could suss out the units I needed to know, but I was wrong on the first guess.

Therefore, I humbly suggest that incomplete rulers or measuring apparatus that does not fully declare its units and scale are rather confusing to viewers and may result in incorrect interpretations. Might as well use a subway or laundry token.

We are an international operation, and there are chiefly two units of measuring distance in use, so we do have a 50/50 chance of getting it right, but why the ambiguity?

Proposals: catalog all such images we can find; place errata in the image descriptions, wherever possible, and if completely ambiguous, then we will notify the uploader, who may know more background or context. in the likely event that an uploader is not responsive, let's crop these rulers out of images, so they cannot confuse, and they cannot tarnish the image's artistic/educational aesthetic.

@Elizium23: Generally, metric rulers I have seen have gradations of 10 and imperial rulers have gradations of multiples of 2, but this one has 5. @Jeff G.: You're not looking quite hard enough. At the top edge of the image, half of the larger ticks extend off the edge of the image, and half of them stop just barely short of the edge, so it is actually marked in groups of ten, subdivided into fives. I expect they're millimetres, but I've got at least one ruler marked in tenths of an inch, so I wouldn't be entirely confident. --bjh21 (talk) 16:12, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
that's perfect... problem solved, I mean no problem close thread Elizium23 (talk) 06:12, 7 October 2023 (UTC)
@Elizium23 The ruler is in Millimeter so the largest fragment is about 8mm. I have been provided with this material beeing put into a little plastic tube with glycerin inside. I wanted to keep it but recognized, the are falling apart. This leads me to the assumption that this "stones" were one a larger part as they were still in the gall bladder. Most probably they were larger because at least 5-8 particles are not on the photography but fell off from another larger part before. Unfortunately I do not have a larger photo at the moment. Maybe I can find the orginal somewhere. Hardwareonkel (talk) 16:55, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

@Ceyhunnn K No you shouldn't. Just because a picture is online/on twitter, it doesn't mean it's acceptable on Commons or Wikipedia. I can assure you, Commons did not "charge" you. We do not even have a mechanism for doing such a thing. If someone who in some way charged you pretended to be Wikimedia Commons, it was pure and simple fraud. Plus, you are not posting here from any account, so there is no way here for anyone to work out if there was suspicious activity related to your account, whatever account that might be. - Jmabel ! talk 23:15, 6 October 2023 (UTC)

Attribution of a photo I just uploaded, plus entering it in this months silhouette challenge

I just uploaded a photo I took of the August 21, 2017 total solar eclipse in Nashville, Tennessee and would like to allow free use, but only with attribution. How do I do that?

Plus, I would like to enter in it for this month's challenge of silhouettes. How do I do that? MarthaLu42 (talk) 04:21, 7 October 2023 (UTC)

@MarthaLu42: It looks like you already have given a license that allows free use, with attribution. See Template:Cc-by-sa-4.0 for how to modify that so that you can specify the name you want attributed (otherwise, people will probably just use MarthaLu42, since that's all they've got to work with).
Assuming you are on a computer, at the bottom of Commons:Photo challenge/2023 - October - Silhouettes, first read the instructions, then hover your mouse where it says, "[To submit your picture to the challenge click the link below]". Public social media image

Hello, I've had an image deleted that I assumed would be okay. It's an image from a persons public social media. The press has already used images from the subjects public social media. Press guidance states images in a person public social media (not protected by privacy settings) can be used. See https://www.ipso.co.uk/media/1510/social-media-public.pdf so am I allowed to upload and use an image from someone's public social media for an article on here ? FashionLover66 (talk) 12:00, 7 October 2023 (UTC)

@FashionLover66: There are stricter rules regarding copyright here: licensing policy. In short, images uploaded here must be free to use by anyone, for any purpose (including commercial purposes). Simply being made public on social media is not sufficient. There must be explicit permission from the copyright owner (likely the photographer) that complies with those rules. Anon126 ( ) 12:54, 7 October 2023 (UTC)
It does say if you make an image public on social media you are putting it into the public domain, which makes it free to use ? FashionLover66 (talk) 13:31, 7 October 2023 (UTC)
Negative. Being "available to the public" is not the same as public domain. Public domain is a legal term that deals with intellectual property rights. GMGtalk 13:44, 7 October 2023 (UTC)
@FashionLover66: That document uses the expression "public domain" in some general sense meaning publicly available. It does not use it in the particular sense it has in reference to copyright, which means an absence of copyright. The document explicitly does not address anything about copyright. Photo owned by an organization

If an organization holds the copyright to a photo, can they upload it to Wikimedia Commons and if so how do they go about it? Can any member of the organization upload the photo even though they personally didn't take the photo? Would they use the standard upload wizard? Fracton (talk) 01:13, 8 October 2023 (UTC)

  • @Fracton: If it is clear why they would own the copyright, they can first publish it on their own web site and indicate the relevant license there. Then anyone, connected to the organization or not, can upload citing that as a source.
  • If that is not practical, or it is the sort of thing where they are likely to need to show proof of how they came to own the copyright, they should go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to provide a clear release of rights via email. This may end up requiring some correspondence back and forth to clarify the situation. - Jmabel ! talk 03:10, 8 October 2023 (UTC)

@Fracton: Should be. Then cite that page as a source when uploading. The only difficulty would be if someone has reason to doubt that organization legitimately holds the copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 20:10, 8 October 2023 (UTC)

1969 photo taken by the Apollo 9 mission. The description (probably provided by NASA itself at the time?) says it shows the Hindu Kush mountain range. In this function it is also used on the Wikipedia, i.e. on the Hindu Kush article for 3 languages including the English wikipedia. After trying (and failing) to align this photo to available topographic maps and sat images, I at some point realized it does not show the Hindu Kush range at all. It shows the Namcha Barwa Himal range, which is the easternmost outlier of the Himalayan range. The Hindu Kush, which is the westernmost outlier of the Himalayan range, is more than 2000 km away and not at all visible in this image. Geachte,

@Tamatwi Probably the right way to handle this is:
  • Use {{Fact disputed}} on File:Scottish_Highlands_and_Lowlands.png, with an explanation of your issue. Obviously, any specific sources you can cite on the matter will be helpful.
  • Upload your own version under a distinct filename. Again, citing sources is a good thing
  • On Wikipedia, on the talk page of the article in question, propose changing out the map in favor of your version. Or make the edit yourself, and explain on the talk page. - Jmabel ! talk 15:22, 10 October 2023 (UTC)

#flickr2commons

Why does this program act in this way? Some of the files I uploaded lack a license. Is there a bug here? 20 upper 17:22, 11 October 2023 (UTC)

@20 upper: I'm not certain, but I'm guessing it is because PD-mark isn't a valid license on Commons. It's a statement, without rationale, that "This work has been identified as being free of known restrictions under copyright law, including all related and neighboring rights." We require a rationale for a file being PD. (Note that someone can effectively put their own work into the public domain on Flickr by marking it with CC-0, but that's a different thing.) - Jmabel ! talk 17:58, 11 October 2023 (UTC)
Yes, that's the reason. The flickr image has a vague PDM tag instead of a specific tag. Commons accepts it at certain conditions, but it requires a check of the facts, a specific rationale and an additional step by a license reviewer. This case looks fine and the uploader can use the template:PD-author-FlickrPDM. License review can take a long time, but the file should be fine if it has a proper tag. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:39, 11 October 2023 (UTC)

Derivative works potentially involve two copyrights, one for the original work and one for the newly introduced material. If the original work is in the public domain, then the legal status is entirely the same as if your work had been wholly original.

Uploaded file can't be found

I'm having a problem with a file I uploaded: File:Chicken tikka masala as a convenience meal.jpg

When I uploaded it, I got an error message about some back-end issue. I tried uploading it again but got a message about it being an exact duplicate, so I let it be.

Now the page shows up, but I can't see the actual file. Clicking on the link gives an error message about the file not being found.

What has gone wrong here? Can it be fixed on Commons or do I have to upload the file again? JIP (talk) 09:09, 13 October 2023 (UTC)

Rapid way to revert images?

Is there a way to rapidly batch revert images to earlier versions?

(User:Wenflou has overwritten many of their 2010s sports photo crops with "deblurred" or "denoised" versions, where part of their process is AI upscaling, asking an AI to imagine what that person's facial features might look like at a higher resolution. Problem with a category infobox - updated info not displaying

Hi all, I am trying to correct some incorrect info that appears in the infobox (is that the term?) for a Commons category, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Leycester_Creek_railway_bridge,_Lismore. The issue is that the image displayed (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lismore,_NSW_-_panoramio.jpg) is not of the bridge in question, and also has incorrect coordinates (28° 48′ 07.7″ S, 153° 16′ 16.43″ E) that are correct for the bridge in the displayed image, but not for the nominate item (Leycester Creek Railway Bridge in Lismore, NSW, Australia). I believe this information is being drawn from wikidata via the page at https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q55886116, so a few hours ago I edited that page to display an image of the correct bridge (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Leycester-ck-bridge-2023-1.jpg), plus put in the correct coordinates which are 28°48′18″S 153°16′22″E. However the Commons category page is not (yet) displaying the revised information, either in the browser I have been using for the updates (which may have caching issues perhaps) or a different browser I have not used before. So I am wondering whether I have done something wrong, or there is just some lag in the system before the updated information will be displayed on the Commons category page concerned. Any advice appreciated! Regards - Tony Rees, Australia Tony 1212 (talk) 02:29, 14 October 2023 (UTC)

Ensuring page is active and how to raise wikipedia importance level

I have just joined and added some information to a page. I noticed that it was described as inactive and standard or low importance. It appeared the section to raise the issue and get it elevated was the 'talk' section but red rose sent me a link to the requirements for content which suggests the note I posted is not compliant. Files on Wikimedia Commons are free to use by anyone for any purpose. Some files do have an attribution requirement, so you would need to attribute the author in a reasonable fashion. COM:REUSE is a helpful read. Abzeronow (talk) 18:31, 14 October 2023 (UTC)
Do be careful to look at the specific licensing indicated on the file page for each image, because licensing requirements differ (though none of them require money). Also, remember that while we (Commons) do our best to be accurate about the copyright status of each image, we do not provide legal guarantees. If you are going to put out a book, and you have no expertise on copyright yourself, you would do well to have it reviewed before publication by someone who has that expertise. - Jmabel ! talk 18:43, 14 October 2023 (UTC)

Uploading a photo

My name is Duchess Harris and I am trying to upload a photo to my Wikipedia Page. Mocha54 (talk) 01:29, 16 October 2023 (UTC)

@Mocha54: it looks like you have been directly editing the English-language Wikipedia page about yourself, and that you haven't declared the conflict of interest. I strongly urge you to read en:WP:COI and en:WP:Autobiography, make the relevant disclosures, and not directly edit the article about yourself in the future, or you are very likely to have your account blocked on the English-language Wikipedia.
None of that is directly Wikimedia Commons' concern, but I'm an admin on both projects.
Here on Commons we don't have that particular concern (much less of a problem of conflict of interest in providing a photo), but we do have the issue of copyright. As for uploading a picture of yourself:
  • If you are uploading a selfie, it's simple: just use Special:UploadWizard, and it will be obvious what to do.
  • If you are uploading a picture someone else took of you:
    • If the photographer signed the copyright over to you, you'll need to go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to send them a copy of the document that transferred copyright to you so it is clear that you have the right to grant a license to use the photo.
    • If, as is more typical, the photographer still owns the copyright, then there are three ways this can proceed:
      1. If the image has not been previously published, then the photographer can open an account here and upload it, granting a license themself as part of the upload process.
      2. If there is a website or web page clearly under control of the photographer (e.g. their own website, Flickr stream, publicly visible social media posting, etc.), then they can publish the picture there and indicate the license. Then anyone, including you, can upload the image to Commons, citing the relevant URL as the source.
      3. The photographer can go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to provide a license for the photo. Anyone, including you, can then upload the image to Commons, following the process described at Template:PP. Sometimes it is more convenient to upload first, so the email to VRT can reference the URL of the page; that's fine as long as the email is sent within hours after uploading.
In all cases, the actual uploading can be accomplished through Special:UploadWizard. Once the image is on Commons, it can be used in the article as described at en:Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Images#How to place an image.
I hope that answers your [implicit] question. - Jmabel ! talk 02:35, 16 October 2023 (UTC)

We have updated our School logo, and I wanted to make this change on our page here. The guide says logos cannot be uploaded, but clearly our old one is there. What is the best way to go about this? Many thanks MrRokison (talk) 16:35, 16 October 2023 (UTC)

@MrRokison Logos are actually uploaded on WP itself, not Commons. Go here [5], chose Upload a non-free file > This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use. > This is a logo of an organization, company, brand, etc.
Then you can add it to the WP-article. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:08, 16 October 2023 (UTC)
@MrRokison and Gråbergs Gråa Sång: when Gråbergs Gråa Sång says, "Logos are actually uploaded on WP itself, not Commons," that's actually not quite right. If the logo is complex enough to be eligible for copyright, then indeed we cannot host it on Commons, unless the copyright-holder (probably the designer) is willing to free-license it. In the UK, the threshold for copyright is quite low; anything other than a text logo would probably be over the line. So:
  • If it's a simple text logo, then you can simply upload it to Commons and use it in the article like any other image on Commons.
  • Otherwise, if the copyright-holder is willing to grant a free license, they can go through the COM:VRT process to upload it on Commons (and use it like any other image on Commons).
  • If neither of these apply then, yes, you need to do the upload directly on the English-language Wikipedia, and it won't be usable on other Wikipedias; if you want it on any other, they each have their own rules. For the English-language Wikipedia, you need to fill out a template that explains how and why this non-free image is being used. en:File:Flag_of_Seattle.svg and en:File:Seattle University seal.svg are good examples to follow.

I've send through a more up to date photo of a third party for their wikipage, but you haven't published it. Can you let me know why? Robinokelly (talk) 16:22, 16 October 2023 (UTC)

@Robinokelly Do you mean File:Mohamed Amersi sept23.jpg? You uploaded it as "own work", but now you write of it as a "photo of a third party". Do you mean, you are not the photographer, but someone else is? In that case please correct the information at the file description page and have the photographer send a permission as explained int VRT.
About "their wikipage". No, it is not their wikipage. If there is a page, then it is a biography about the person. There is no ownership of a biography in wikipedia. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 16:33, 16 October 2023 (UTC)
@C.Suthorn: I hope you are not being willfully obtuse here. A photo of someone nearly always refers to the subject of the photo, not the photographer. And while of course no one has ownership of the page about them in Wikipedia, there is nothing unusual about someone, especially someone not terribly active in WMF projects, to refer to it as that person's wiki page. (The very use of "wiki page" rather than something like "page in the English-language Wikipedia" should tell you that you are not dealing with someone deep into working on these projects. Don't bite the newbies.) - Jmabel ! talk 23:21, 16 October 2023 (UTC)
C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 07:06, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
@Robinokelly: (1) when you are asking a question like this, it would be really helpful if you would link the image and article in question so people don't have to guess what you are talking about. (2) I assume you are talking about File:Mohamed Amersi sept23.jpg and en:Mohamed Amersi. Why would you expect that uploading a photo to Commons would magically make it appear in a particular Wikipedia article? As far as I can see, you haven't even proposed on the article's talk page that the image in the article be changed. I suggest you do that, and when you propose that, say that if no one objects in the next three days you'll make the edit yourself. - Jmabel ! talk 23:27, 16 October 2023 (UTC)

changing photo on my wikipedia page

All I want to do is change the hideous photo on my wikipedia page. This photo was uploaded by someone else. I want to add another photo. Would this be possible? I can use another photo taken by the same photographer and credit him. There appears to be a better one that I could add. Can you please tell me how I do this? Thanks so much for any help you can give me. Best Karen Hansentanner (talk) 01:50, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

@Hansentanner: a link here to say what page and photo you are talking about might have made something clearer here, but I'll do my best without that. I'm going to guess that you are talking about a page about you on the English-language Wikipedia. If not, then some of what I'm saying might not apply.
Commons can only host photos that are either in the public domain or free-licensed (if you don't know what that means, follow the links). It is unlikely that there is a picture of you in the public domain (few pictures from recent decades would be PD), and only the copyright-holder can grant a license. Typically the photographer would be the copyright-holder. (Because you didn't link the current picture, I have no way to determine whether it is properly licensed or not.)
If the picture in question has never been published then the simplest thing would be for the copyright-holder to create an account, upload it themselves, and grant an appropriate license; I recommend {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}}. (Similarly if it was already published with a sufficiently free license.)
Otherwise (image already published, or photographer doesn't want to set up a Commons account), you need to go through the more complicated process outlined at COM:VRT where the copyright-holder can send confidential correspondence to establish who they are and that they are now offering the relevant license for the photo. Probably best to have them CC you, but the email has to come directly from them.
Once the image is uploaded to Commons with an appropriate license (and the VRT process is complete, if you go that way), it should be pretty routine to get it substituted on the English-language Wikipedia. Because of their policy on conflicts of interest, you should not just substitute it into the article yourself. Instead, request the substitution on the talk page of the article, requesting the change as a courtesy. If no one responds within 72 hours (some articles aren't particularly monitored), feel free to hit me up on my talk page and I'll take care of it. - Jmabel ! talk 02:14, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

You don't need to upload a photo. It is already there, you linked to it yourself. However "commons" is a generic term. The organization by the name "Creative Commons" uses it and Wikipedia uses it in the site name "commons.wikimedia.org". "Creative Commons" is an organization that provides licenses models. "commons.wikimedia.org" is the image repository of Wikipedia and all other sites of the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF).
Therefore the images only need swaped at the article at the english language wikipedia in the way Jmabel has already described. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 07:16, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

  • No, if the old logo was ever relevant, it is NOT important to delete the old version. Commons documents history as well as most recent versions. If the new logo is free licensed or public domain, you are free to upload it without deleting the old one. If any Wikipedia articles use the old version, you may edit the articles to replace the image with the current one. @Infrogmation, I think this logo meets "This logo image consists only of simple geometric shapes or text. It does not meet the threshold of originality needed for copyright protection", see [6] for an example of templates (and it seems to be in place in the articles anyway). It's fine to upload it on Commons without it being free licensed or public domain. Replacing an old logo with a new as lead-image on WP seems reasonable. Actually deleting the old image files on Commons, less so. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 05:37, 18 October 2023 (UTC)

How long does it take for subtitles on wikimedia commons to show up in wikipedia?

Hi, I recently added subtitles to TimedText:How Animated Cartoons Are Made (1919).webm.en.srt , and the same video is used in the article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traditional_animation. Ghosts of North Dakota

The makers of the blog Ghosts of North Dakota have released their photos into the public domain [7]. They've steadily released their original unprocessed photos (some, even the raw image files) piecemeal via individual Google Drive links (e.g., [8]) posted on their Facebook page. I'd like to get them uploaded here, but done manually this would be a rather inconvenient bulk operation with dozens of individual Drive links to go through. Does anyone with more experience have advice about this, and how they could be batch uploaded more easily? Shells-shells (talk) 05:19, 18 October 2023 (UTC)

Wanted to upload a Public Domain book

I have a scan of the Croatian book "Pastir Loda" by en:Vladimir Nazor which I wanted to upload so I can use it on hr.Wikisource. Nazor died more than 70 years ago, and the book was published in 1946. The upload form requires to state that the work was published before 1928 and that the author must have died more than 70 years ago. Shouldn't that be an or? Can I upload the book here? -- Denny (talk) 02:48, 19 October 2023 (UTC)

  • @Denny: No, it is correctly an "and". If it was published in 1946, there is a good chance that it is still in copyright in the United States, where our servers are located. Do you have a reason it wouldn't be? - Jmabel ! talk 03:27, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Thanks for the reply. It was not a work for hire, it was not published pseudonymously, etc., so I don't know why it would have the 95-years-after-publication rule applied to it, and not just the 70-years-after-death-of-author rule [9]. What can we do to check whether the 95-year rule would apply? (As far as I know it was never published in English or in the US, but I don't think that has any weight). --Denny (talk) 03:37, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
I now found the Help page on public domain, and according to that, it would be PD, if I understand it right. There is no copyright notice in the book, although I am not sure that matters. I uploaded it using the PD-1996 template. I hope that is correct. If not, it should obviously be deleted. --Denny (talk) 04:06, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
@Denny: Hm, I don't believe this is actually public domain in the US, due to URAA copyright restoration. According to the page on copyright rules for Croatia: The URAA restoration date is 1 January 1996. At that time, the copyright term for works other than photographs was 50 years after author's death. Nazor died in 1949, so it would still have been copyrighted on that date. According to the Hirtle chart for US copyright terms, this means that the copyright in the US expires 95 years after publication, that is, after 2041 (1 January 2042). If this analysis is correct, then it is still copyrighted in the US and so cannot be hosted on Commons. (Note: If this file is deleted please list it at Category:Undelete in 2042 or add the deletion request page to the category.) Anon126 ( ) 08:56, 19 October 2023 (UTC)

@Aniket1508: Hi,

@Aniket1508: Based on your account on Wikipedia, it appears you have already used the files for upload process there to request the previous logo that currently appears in the article. You can request the new logo there as well if you cannot or do not wish to upload it yourself.
I have tagged for deletion the copy of the previous logo that you uploaded here on Wikimedia Commons: If you say you are an "independent editor" (and are not connected to this company?), then I don't believe you can provide permission for the logo. Anon126 ( ) 09:16, 19 October 2023 (UTC)

Preserving a blog

My friend’s husband died recently. He had written an extensive blog on his film reviews. His wife wants to preserve them. One step we have thought of, is to set up a Wikipedia entry explaining the blog. But we don't know how. The next step, is if possible, to upload the whole blog to your archive. It should still be accessible to anyone. She will have the rights or ownershop of his blog. But how would we satisfy you, Wikipedia, of this? We are in Dunedin, New Zealand. Technical reason for 100 MB limitation on HTML upload form?

While Upload Wizard has a 4 GB limit, the HTML-based form has a 100 MB limit. It looks like no one has asked this before: is there a technical reason for this limitation? Elominius (talk) 09:34, 19 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi, This is mostly historical, but uploading a 100 MB+ file in one chunk will fail for most people. Yann (talk) 09:37, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
I see. This was a rapid response. Thanks, Yann. Have a wonderful day. Elominius (talk) 09:41, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
The Upload Wizard is also llimited to 100MB, but can circumvent the limit by uploading a number of chunks each smaller than 100 MB. Nearly all files are smaller than 100MB. Most files uploaded to commons are jpeg or png. Both file types are no larger than 20MB almost ever. The only file types that are typically sometimes larger than 100MB are tiff, pdf and mp4- But even these are mostly smaller than 100MB. The limit of 100MB could be changed at the web server. The limit of 4GiB however is a hard limit. MediaWiki stores the file size as an 32bit unsigned integer in the database. The maximum number that fits into a 32bit unsigned integer is 4G. MP4 format

MP4 is the most popular file extension for videos, just like JPG is for photos. While converting videos to WEBM is only a minor inconvenience, I guess there must be some good reason for the lack of MP4 support. How come MP4 is not supported? Elominius (talk) 09:37, 19 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi, MP4 is not a free format, and only free formats are accepted on Commons. See Commons:Requests for comment/MP4 Video. Yann (talk) 09:40, 19 October 2023 (UTC)

Clipping an image

Is there a forum/help desk that can advise a technical idiot on clipping an image. I'm needing both "how to" advice, as well as any copyright implications. The image in question is this, [[File:The Old School House on Bagwell Lane (geograph 7253971).jpg]]. What I would like to do is remove that irritating boat on the right-hand side of the image, while losing as little as possible of the main building. InstantCommons problem

Hello. I am operating the wiki InkluPedia at https://inklupedia.de/ based on MediaWiki 1.39.1, PHP 8.0.30 and Debian (root server). Since yesterday InstantCommons is no longer working most of the time. After detecting the problem it was working for some minutes hours later, but after that the problem reoccured. There was no technical change in my platform. Only some hundred users are currently using this wiki daily, so I do no suspect mass usage of InstantCommons and a throttling of my wiki in Commons. Is this a known problem? Are other wikis affected too? Is there a MediaWiki log that I can check? --InkluPedia (talk) 14:38, 21 October 2023 (UTC)

E.g. this picture [12] is from Commons. At the moment there is no more problem. Even after a purge of affected articles/pictures. I did not change anything. --InkluPedia (talk) 17:25, 21 October 2023 (UTC)

Uploading a newspaper article

I went to the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center and found a newspaper article from 1905 in the Town and Country newspaper (Pennsburg, PA) on microfiche. They sent me a PDF of the newspaper article and I have cited it in the Wikipedia article for the Red Hill Band. I know that images taken before 1927 are generally public domain, but does the same thing apply to articles published in newspapers? If I'm able to upload this can I link to the Wikimedia Commons image in the citation on Wikipedia (or is that a question for the Wikipedia HD)? Also, what file type should I use when uploading it (I assume PDF probably isn't acceptable)? TipsyElephant (talk) 13:38, 22 October 2023 (UTC)

I also have the 1909 bylaws for the band. I'm assuming that those are probably public domain. TipsyElephant (talk) 13:41, 22 October 2023 (UTC)

Yes, anything published that is not a sound recording before 1928 (1927 has been public domain since this year) is public domain in the United States. Abzeronow (talk) 15:46, 22 October 2023 (UTC)
PDF is acceptable, JPEG is better for this, and I assume you know that you can cite an article without it necessarily having to be available online. - Jmabel ! talk 18:40, 22 October 2023 (UTC)
@TipsyElephant There are tools to extract the original image file inside the PDF. If you do that and it is PNG, JPEG, TIFF or WEBP you should upload this original file in its original format. Otherwise PNG is probably the best. If it is mostly a photograph with only some text JPEG may be better than PNG. If the PDF actually contains more than one page, it would be good to upload the PDF. Dear Sir or Madam,

It has come to our attention that the logo used by the VDMA is erroneously marked as "in the public domain" on your platform and, due to a lack of originality, is not subject to copyright protection.

We disagree with this statement already against the background of the achieved level of creation of the logo according to § 2 para. 1 No. 4 UrhG and ask you to delete this misleading passage:

"It does not meet the threshold of originality needed for copyright protection, and is therefore in the public domain," (...) File:Logo German Engineering Federation.svg - Wikimedia Commons (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Logo_Verband_Deutscher_Maschinen-_und_Anlagenbau.svg)

Taxon identifications

I can ID some of these (at least to genus). How should I go about doing so? Should I just add the ID to an image's description? Should I add it somewhere else? Should I have it checked first? How does this usually work? (I'm new to editing the Commons and wary of breaking things somehow, haha.) Thanks for your help! -- Photosynthetic430 21:41, 23 October 2023 (UTC)

@Photosynthetic430: Hi, and welcome. You may certainly recategorize them and adjust their descriptions. You may also submit rename requests using {{Rename}} or our RenameLink gadget, if appropriate.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 22:56, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
Thank you! I'll get right on it. -- Photosynthetic430 15:30, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
Oh, one other question: I've already found a photo that's clearly IDed, but to a taxon (Potentilla lozani) that has neither a category in the Commons nor an article in Wikipedia. It's a validly published scientific name, but apparently not a widely accepted one. Should I just make the category? Even if this would be the only thing in it? (I don't know whether it would be -- I'll go looking if making the category is a possibility.) What's the policy on when to make categories for taxa? -- Photosynthetic430 15:42, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
@Photosynthetic430: Yes; for taxa even one image is enough. Also, it does have a Wikipedia article, just not in English. See Potentilla lozanii (Q17249607), which links articles in two languages (and to which you should add your Commons cat once you build it).

  • Sorry, there is no indication that the photo is free licensed. Commons is for free licensed media only. See COM:License. (You might be able to upload it to en:wikipedia under "fair use"; check there. As Jmabel answered a question about something similar above, "For the English-language Wikipedia, you need to fill out a template that explains how and why this non-free image is being used. en:File:Flag_of_Seattle.svg and en:File:Seattle University seal.svg are good examples to follow.") -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 01:42, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
    • I don't think en-wiki will take that one: it's a photo of a living person, and there is no reason in principle that someone couldn't take a photo of Chesebro and free-license it.

It's just my landlord got a notice of copyright infringement on his internet bill and I was thinking it might be this image, so that's the reason for the request. If you could delete it and re-upload it that sounds like a good solution. I disagree also with institutions claiming copyright over public domain images. Curiocurio (talk) 15:43, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
IMHO, it's very unlikely that a notice on a bill has anything to do with this image. Anyway, it would be a useless notice if it doesn't tell what it is about. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:55, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
@Curiocurio: Hello, Well, the museum does not claim copyright on the image itself. The descriptive notice states "Terms governing use, reproduction, and publication : Item is in the public domain." However, the museum seems to try to give to itself a sort of indirect copyright on public domain material by claiming that the arrangement of its whole website is a copyrighted collective work, and it tries to make you agree contractually to its claims by saying that your use of its website signifies your consent to be bound by its terms. I guess many Commons users would just wrap the public domain status templates into a PD-scan or PD-Art template. But if you are actually troubled by the claims of that museum, you can nominate the file for deletion. If an uploader sincerely fears a copyright claim from the source and doesn't want to risk to engage responsability, I think the deletion should be accepted, even if to someone else the claim or the fear may seem unfounded. If the claim is unfounded, someone else can upload the image. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:41, 24 October 2023 (UTC)

Flags and Coats of arms of Venezuela is free license

Ok, with respect to the coats of arms in Venezuela, I read the 1999 Constitution, the constitution of each state and the Organic Law of Municipal Public Power, all coats of arms and flags are public (that is, free licenses). AbchyZa22 (talk) 21:33, 15 October 2023 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Hello, I spoke with the @NoonIcarus: (he is also a member of Wikimedia Commons) about the topic, the flags and coats of arms in Venezuela are Public (that is, free license) and he told me:Hi. That is correct, national symbols are public domain according to Venezuelan law, which is contemplated in the specific Commons template (commons:Template:PD-VenezuelaGov/es). I think I remember a specific article in which the flag and the shield were specifically mentioned, as long as they were not the object of disrespect, but I can't find it at the moment
    AbchyZa22 (talk) 09:56, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
    • As I've said before: (1) can you please cite the relevant passages in the constitutions and/or law? (2) In any case, for a flag or coat of arms anywhere, there are usually two separate issues: the blazon (the official description of the flag or coat of arms) and the actual rendering (someone's particular rendition of that, if it rises above the usual threshold of originality for copyright). There are few (if any) countries where the former is a copyright issue; the issue is almost always the latter. - Jmabel ! talk 15:38, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Hi sorry, one blazon is a different with have a copyright, 2 the National Flag Law, National Anthem and Coat of Arms of the Republic Bolivarian of Venezuela in Article 1:The National Flag, the National Anthem and the Coat of Arms of the Republic Bolivarian of Venezuela are the symbols of the Homeland and must be venerated by all Venezuelans, and respected by the citizens of the other countries.(this write is a Spanish with country),but all Flags and Coats of arms (states, Municipalities) in Venezuela are the symbols in free-licensed (public), is a recommended the "PD-VenezuelaGov" all flags and Coats of arms are Public Domain.

            AbchyZa22 (talk) 09:26, 20 October 2023 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Kind regards. I will continue this in English for other editors, if that's alright. First, I wanted to know if you believe the issue has been solved. As far as I understand, one of the restrictions on the use of the flag, coat of arms and other national symbols is that they must not be degraded or subjected to ridicule, if I'm not mistaken. I could have sworn reading that years ago, but I'm not able to find it. You can also use Template:Translation for previous and for future comments, if you wish. Please let me know if I can help further with the issue. Best wishes, --NoonIcarus (talk) 10:33, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

Summarizing for those who do not speak Spanish

The copyright laws cited at {{PD-VenezuelaGov}} make it clear that Venezuelan flags, coats of arms, etc., are in the public domain (although there are certain non-copyright restrictions about using symbols respectfully, etc.). AbchyZa22 disagree as to just how broadly this works, but we both agree that anyone can make their own rendering of these emblems and upload them to Commons. In his interpretation, if I understand correctly, any rendering of the flag or emblem is simply in the public domain in Venezuela, and {{PD-VenezuelaGov}} is the only tag needed. I think it is possible that he is right, but I also think it is possible that (much as with coats of arms in many European countries) that an individual rendering of a Venezuelan flag or coat of arms (if above the threshold of originality) might be able to carry copyright, and might need an additional license from the person who rendered it.

In particular, beyond the matter of what tags to use, under his interpretation you could upload any third-party rendering of such a flag or coat of arms, and simply tag it as {{PD-VenezuelaGov}}. Under my understanding, for anything above the threshold of originality, the person who rendered the image would have to offer a license as well.

Please do not further add to this section, unless AbchyZa22 wants to add if he thinks I mischaracterized his view. - Jmabel ! talk 18:55, 20 October 2023 (UTC)

Saludos,--NoonIcarus (talk) 10:44, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
Good day, @AbchyZa22: . I was meaning to comment that I am not sure that the public domain extends to local entities or companies (even if they are state-owned) because, as I recall, the public domain extends is to national patriotic symbols, not necessarily tolocal ones, and in the case of company logos or emblems their threshold of originality/creativity is higher. In any case, I am not sure and it would needed to be consulted further. Regards,

@Jeff G.: Nothing in my spam folder. --Elekes Andor (talk) 07:05, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
@Elekes Andor: The files are marked with a permission received template, which means the permission is in a queue, waiting for an available VRT member to process it. The permission was sent to permissions-hu, not permissions-commons. That is ok, but it might restrict the VRT members who can process that mail. The permissions-hu team may be small and the backlog or the reaction time may be long. The permission received template was added less than three weeks ago. There have been worse backlogs. Maybe you can ask a Hungarian-speaking Commons member, Commons:Volunteer Response Team/List of members by language#Hungarian, if they can access your mail. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:54, 24 October 2023 (UTC)

What does it mean "permission-hu" ? What does it mean "permission-commons" ? What does it mean on the pages " If a valid permission is not provided within 30 days of the first response by a VRT agent, this file will be deleted" ? Who is in charge in this question ? First the permission was sent to permissions-hu@wikimedia.org, on the 2nd of October, 2023. why should I contact Hungarian speaking Commons members ? --Elekes Andor (talk) 08:18, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

As you say, you sent the mail to permissions-hu, the Wikimedia address specific for permissions in Hungarian language. So, it is assumed that you wrote the mail in Hungarian and that you wanted it to be processed by a Hungarian-speaking VRT member. Your comment seemed to be asking for someone who could speed up the processing of your mail. Hence the suggestion to contact a Hungarian-speaking VRT member on Commons who might be able to access and read your mail and help you directly with that. Now, if you sent to the Hungarian-language VRT team a mail written in a language other than Hungarian, I suppose they can identify the language and transfer it easily to the VRT members in that other language, although that might cause some delay if the mail has to successively reach the top of two lines. The 30 days deletion mention should not trouble you since you already sent the permission, assuming it is valid. The person in charge of your communication will be the VRT member who will read your mail when your mail reaches the top of the line. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:12, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

So all I want to do is upload a photo, on behalf of the owner/subject (since he is being blocked for some reason) of the photo to be used on a wiki page for him. Do I need to upload it and still generate an email to him for him to approve? When option do I use for the license in this case?

Thanks, Steve Swilson317 (talk) 04:35, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

  • The block thing is weird. There must have been a vandal or long-term problem account using the same IP range. If you know the IP address, and it's stable, you might take this up at COM:AN.
  • If they might be able to get in from somewhere else (a different Internet connection) that would probably work. Failing that, there are two other ways to do this:
    • They can upload to a site or page clearly under their control (e.g. their own website, Flickr page or publicly visible social media account), indicate the license there, and you can then cite that as a source when you upload.
    • They can go through the email-based COM:VRT process.
  • Either way, they can choose any acceptable license. You would use whatever license they select (I recommend {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}}) and be sure to clarify any necessary attribution (e.g. {{CC-BY-SA-4.0|THAT GUY}}), which produces:

Thank you for your reply. The image is located in the Gallery section of his own website (https://michaelkollwitz.com/gallery/). Are you saying that he needs to add verbiage on that webpage regarding the license? If so, can you recommend wording? Thanks again! Swilson317 (talk) 18:16, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
@Swilson317: That website looks like a bunch of pictures of one person, not by one person. Remember that normally the license has to come from the photographer, not the subject of the photo, and it is the photographer, not the subject who needs to be attributed as author. Unless these are self-taken photos with an auto-timer or something like that, permission from the subject's page is likely to be challenged.
That said, and assuming the copyright & credit are clear, the copyright-holder can say something under the photo in question saying something like "This photo is available for reuse under CC-BY-SA 4.0 [which I'd suggest linking to https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/deed.en], and should be attributed to NAME GOES HERE." It would be nice (but not necessary) to add "This license allows derivative works and commercial use, but requires correct attribution," to make it clear that the person granting the license knows what they are doing. - Jmabel ! talk 19:07, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
Thanks. He did not take the photo, but has purchased the photo from the photographer and owns the rights to use it. I will share this information with him. I have also suggested that he follow-up with Wikimedia to resolve the block, as he should have "normal" access. Swilson317 (talk) 20:50, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
@Swilson317: "Rights to use it" may not be quite enough if the copyright was not overtly transferred. I don't know exactly what the VRT people might want on this. If the copyright was transferred, he could probably email them a copy of the transfer document; if he has an unlimited, transferable license, I suspect (but don't know) that would be about the same. But anything short of that might not let him issue the CC license, and the photographer might need to be involved. In any case, besides the aforementioned note on his own website, it would be good to send a copy of the transfer contract to the address given on COM:VRT. I know this sounds like overkill, but I imagine you've been around here long enough to know how often people are mistaken in thinking they have intellectual property rights they don't actually have. - Jmabel ! talk 03:14, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

Error: File extension ".jpg" does not match the detected MIME type of the file (image/png).

Hi, does anyone know how to fix this error? It kept showing: "Upload warning File extension ".jpg" does not match the detected MIME type of the file (image/png)."

I'm uploading a new version of a file with higher quality, the file name and file extension are exactly the same for both the Source filename and Destination filename, so I'm not really sure why that error is appearing. Cjse23 (talk) 00:45, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

  • @Cjse23: You can't use a file that is actually a PNG to replace a JPEG. You can (for example) bring it into GIMP and export it as a proper JPEG, then upload that.
  • Just to make sure, since you are pretty new here: I hope you have read COM:OVERWRITE. In my experience, most of the time when people think they ought to overwrite a file and don't know exactly how this all works, they are wrong about overwriting being a good idea. - Jmabel ! talk 03:19, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

Hello, What happens if you can't get the date that an image was created or published? Thank you, Enedina Vera Max4everr! (talk) 22:14, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

  • If this is an issue that needs to be resolved to determine copyright status, it probably means the image should not be uploaded to Commons, under the precautionary principle.
  • Otherwise: presumably you can pin it down to some range. E.g. {{circa|1923}} produces "circa 1923
    date QS:P,+1923-00-00T00:00:00Z/9,P1480,Q5727902
    ", {{other date|before|1937}} produces "before 1937

Oddly edited image - what action to take?

File:PeteBauer.jpg appears to have been edited to make one of the subject's eyes noticeably lower than the other. If you look at the given source, http://www.photoshophalloffame.com/peter-bauer, the image does not appear, but there is a different photo of him in which his eyes are aligned normally. The uploading user, Mayorbauer (talk · contribs), is likely to be Peter Bauer, the subject of the image. He may have made that edit himself (he is in the Photoshop Hall of Fame, after all), although the reason for it isn't clear to me. I'm a bit concerned that either Bauer is having a laugh at our expense or someone else is having a laugh at his expense. What action, if any, should be taken on this image? Apocheir (talk) 03:49, 27 October 2023 (UTC)

@Apocheir: You can nominate the file for speedy deletion (with copyvio and a link to a copy of the original photo). It looks like a modified version of the photo used in his Amazon profile. In this case, it doesn't matter who modified the photo, because the original photo is not credited and sourced, it is on the internet and there is no indication that it is free and the modified file has a false source. Copyright help regarding File:Miguel Saiz gobernador.jpg

Hello. I believe this file is under fair use since it is an official portrait of an Argentine government official, but I could not find the original picture (this is a cropped version of a photograph taken of the portrait), so I do not know what its license is. --Skyline2023 (talk) 20:24, 28 October 2023 (UTC)

@Skyline2023: Commons does not accept files on a "fair use" basis (and "fair use" is always dependent on the context in which a photo is used, anyway), so if you are correct that its use here in Commons would constitute fair use, that would be a reason to delete it. However, I think it is most likely {{PD-AR-Photo}}. You don't give even an estimated date, though, so I can't be sure of that. - Jmabel ! talk 22:10, 28 October 2023 (UTC)

Another artist, another chance for my brand-new author icon

After our first go-round (as detailed at Commons:Help desk/Archive/2023/08#Uploading my brand-new author icon to Commons) ultimately went nowhere, here's to hoping our next r/furry artist, "Creation2Station", delivers what I need for my Miraheze sidebar logo/Wikimedia portrait badge. And before you ask, @Jmabel: I reminded him about the VRT process and how much easier it is to state the license on the original RDT post--lessons learned this time. (Sadly, attempts to contact our last guest ["LeoTheFloofyDragon"] re: choosing his license have borne almost no fruit, so his take might as well be staying on his RDT/DeviantART profiles for the foreseeable future.)

Apparently, C2S may be starting to work on that request as I type, so we'll wait and see how it goes this time. Any further advice? --Slgrandson (talk) 02:47, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

categories of italian military aircraft registrations (Tornado)

I noticed, that in the Category:Panavia Tornado in Italian service aircraft are being listed under their squadron identification code e.g. 6-25 instead of their military registration which is MM7043 in that example (see that number on the tail of this photo).

The point is, that an individual aircraft during its service obtains different squadron identification codes. Watch this photo-collection, where the aircraft MM6970 is beeing seen as 51-04 in 1996 but also as 5-45 in the year 2002 while the military registration remained the same.

Before I start to add this MM.... category (all these are in the Aircraft by registration-category) I need a second opinion on the hierarchy and secondly to my opinion, that one could leave the sqadron code category on these files as they are, as this is actually still another way to find them in the Aircraft by registration-category.

the only weak point is, that I would only add those pictures of a X-XX squadron code to the MM.... code that ere either clearly visible or taken at roughly the same time (in the case of 6-25 all can be added to MM7043).

Hierachy of the categories that I thought of firstyː

-Panavia Tornado in Italian service

-MM7043

-6-25

while both (MM7043 and 6-25) remain in the "Aircraft by registration"-category.

this would mean, that the 6-25 will not be visible in the Category:Panavia Tornado in Italian service anymore. Or would it be better to have these two in there both at the same time?

At the moment, only one aircraft is in the Category:Panavia Tornado in Italian service in both ways; it is MM55002 which is also I-41. (I naturally created MM55002 when uploading, as this is its registration and then realized, that the upper category contains NO MM.... registrations, which is wrong or at least incomplete).

Correct so far and 2nd questionː hierarchy or same level? Anidaat (talk) 08:22, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

@Anidaat: are squadron codes permanently unique? Or can two different aircraft have the same squadron code at different times? If they are unique, then they are probably good categories, and should be subcats of the registration number. If they are not unique, then they need further qualification to be good category names.
As for the hierarchy, think about what we do for ships, or at least most modern ships. We have the IMO, which permanently identifies the vessel, and might have any number of categories which combine a name and a date of construction (and, very rarely, a further disambiguator when needed) and are subcats of the IMO cat. Things like what force they were part of are generally associated with the vessel name, not the IMO. - Jmabel ! talk 16:24, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

Change photo name

When I uploaded File:Red Hill Band 1925.tif I had found sources saying the photo was taken around 1925. Reversions of Austria-Hungary maps by user GPinkerton

Several weeks ago user GPinkerton reverted several maps of the subdivisions of Austria-Hungary originally created by Ludó (listed below) back to their original 2018 versions, which are full of inaccuracies and anachronistic borders. (Details of the changes made here.) They specified Commons:Overwriting existing files as their justification but provided no additional comments (the summary was simply a link to the policy). I posted a message on their talk page on 6 October asking for further details/explanation, but have had no response.

It is my understanding that the reverted changes would fall under "uncontroversial corrections to diagrams, maps, or charts, if a more accurate version is available". However, I thought it best not to simply re-revert them without first seeking confirmation – I have no intention of starting an upload-war. Is my assessment correct and is it OK to restore the modified versions? If not presumably the "correct" course of action would be to re-upload them under a new file name, change all uses on the various Wikipedias to the corrected versions and tag the originals with {{Superseded}} – if so I assume there is no way to automate the process (it seems like such a tool would be rather prone to abuse) and so it would have to be done manually?

If it is relevant, the files in question had been previously edited by user Claude Zygiel, with whom GPinkerton seems have butted-heads before over uploading "fake" historical maps (i.e. modified versions of old out-of-copyright maps which may give the impression that the modifications are sourced to the original author; see User talk:Claude Zygiel#Manipulating historical maps). GPinkerton also seem to have reverted several other files previously modified by Claude Zygiel on that same day and with the same simple link summary. (See Uploads by GPinkerton.)

Apologies if this is not the right place to post/ask this – if there's a better place please let me know.

Reverted files:

Empire d'Autriche 1914 Goritz et Gradiska.png, Empire d'Autriche 1914 Trieste.png and Empire d'Autriche 1914 Istrie.png were also reverted but had not been edited by me.

Alphathon /ˈæɫfə.θɒn/ (talk) 21:46, 26 October 2023 (UTC) (post edited to remove three of the files from the list, so as not to imply that I had edited them Alphathon /ˈæɫfə.θɒn/ (talk) 09:31, 29 October 2023 (UTC))

At a quick look in areas where I know the details, your (Alphathon's) maps look more accurate. No one here seems to be citing any sources or listing the discrepancies, which makes it hard to sort out (since one of you could be right on one matter and the other on another). I would say that given the credit of "Own work" by Ludovic Lepeltier-Kutasi, you might do better to upload under a distinct file name as a derivative work and give a summary of what purported errors the changes intend to address, and what your authority is for the changes. Some of the changes were simply aesthetic (darker borders, different shades or hues). - Jmabel ! talk 23:11, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
With the exception of Bosnia and Herzegovina (which was changed so that it would be included in Austria-Hungary) no aesthetic changes were (intentionally) made. However, there seems to be a discrepancy in the colour profiles between the versions which I haven't been able to track down which may account for any such differences. The differences/changes made between the original and modified versions, as well as the main sources, are listed here. Alphathon /ˈæɫfə.θɒn/ (talk) 23:27, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
Actually, there were some aesthetic changes made which I had forgotten about – the outer border of Austria-Hungary was changed to black and the coastlines/lake shores to blue. My mistake. Alphathon /ˈæɫfə.θɒn/ (talk) 23:41, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
To be clear though at no point has GPinkerton claimed (explicitly) that the changes made were erroneous. Rather, it is my interpretation that they are taking an absolutist stance on the Commons:Overwriting existing files policy, i.e. something like "never upload a new version of a file made by someone else". Part of the issue here is that they weren't specific so taking appropriate action to remedy the situation is difficult. Alphathon /ˈæɫfə.θɒn/ (talk) 23:34, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
Hi @Alphathon: my apologies for not getting back to you earlier; I had forgotten about your question on my talk page which I neglected to answer. I don't have a particular opinion on the accuracy of the maps, and you are right to surmise that the issue is with Claude Zygiel's editing, but it would seem to me that changes to political or historical borders on maps, however minor, is exactly the kind of thing Commons:Overwriting existing files is intended to forbid. In my view, moving swathes of territory from one province to another is the kind of thing over which wars have been fought, and doing so is not at all like changing a resolution here or changing the colour of shading there. With these Austro-Hungarian maps, being digital native maps, I don't think that so much of a problem if a reliable source can be cited or consensus established. What Claude has been doing, in changing photographs of historical paper maps to make them "correct" according to Claude's own synthesis is for me beyond the pale. (See more at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Europe 1097-corrected.jpg.) The fact that you have discussed the changes with another editor is a good thing, even if the original uploader should be consulted where possible, but the fact that this editor was Claude made me feel that such a limited consensus was insecure. Apologies again for the delay in making this more explicit Alphathon. GPinkerton (talk) 23:58, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for replying @GPinkerton. I understand your position with regard to Claude Zygiel's edits to old maps and don't think it is an unreasonable one, as doing so can imply a source or create the illusion of authority. With maps originally created for Commons however ("digital native maps" as you put it) I do not think that holds, hence the "uncontroversial corrections to diagrams, maps, or charts" exemption. The "uncontroversial" part seems to be key here – if the accuracy (and possibly neutrality) is disputed then obviously it is right that they should be reverted (at least until consensus is reached). If a map has a specific source listed that may be different (assuming it follows the source accurately), especially if it is specifically supposed to show a particular perspective. In this case though no source is listed at all for the original versions, and several of the borders are clearly anachronistic/modern (see the talk page post of a full list) so given the style I would guess they were simply derived from GIS data or similar for modern subdivisions; Bukovina was probably derived from something like this map of the 1940s Bukovina Governate or a map of the inter-war Romanian counties such as this one. On the other hand, the changes I made were sourced, primarily to official Austro-Hungarian maps:

The Austro-Hungarian borders used (internal and external) are mostly derived directly from the Austrian/Austro-Hungarian military surveys, as well as from individual county maps for Hungary/Croatia-Slavonia (available here or on Commons in Category:Old maps of counties in the Kingdom of Hungary and Category:Maps of counties of Croatia-Slavonia) and cross-referenced with maps covering all of Hungary.

It seems to me that official Austro-Hungarian survey and county maps are about as reliable and as far from "controversial" as is possible for an administrative map of Austria-Hungary. The only borders not sourced to the Austro-Hungarian surveys/county maps were the Germany–Russia border, which was sourced from German survey maps (Messtischblätter) (although the same border does appear on the Austro-Hungarian 1:200k survey sheets at a lower level of detail) and some of those in the Balkans which changed following the Second Balkan War (primarily the borders between Serbia, Montenegro and Albania).
What Claude Zygiel has been doing to photographs[/scans] of historical paper maps is really not relevant, as
  • my versions of the maps (the current versions before you reverted) were derived from the original versions, not Claude Zygiel's, with the only changes retained from their versions being the re-coloured outer border and Bosnia and Herzegovina (which I re-implemented from scratch),
  • all edits should be taken on their own merit, not because a particular user made them (and in this case they did not), and
  • these files are not photographs/scans of historical paper maps
Alphathon /ˈæɫfə.θɒn/ (talk) 09:31, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
  • @Alphathon: I completely respect what you are trying to do but when you disagree with someone about a map they uploaded and that you want to overwrite, "mostly sourced from maps on such-and-such website" is only marginally better than no citation at all. It doesn't allow anyone to check your work without doing roughly as much research as you did yourself. Cite individual maps, be specific about what areas you made changes in based on what map. Otherwise, upload to a different file name and make your case on individual Wikipedias to adopt your maps. If you want to just overwrite like this, the standards of citation should pretty much be those typical for Wikipedia. - Jmabel ! talk 16:17, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

Fair enough. I wasn't really thinking of it as a formal citation (just descriptive prose) at the time so could have been clearer/more explicit, although I don't think "mostly sourced from maps on such-and-such website" is quite fair.

  • "...mostly derived directly from the Austrian/Austro-Hungarian military surveys...": This refers to the Franzisco-Josephinische Landesaufnahme (third military survey of the Habsburg Empire) which was conducted by the k.u.k. Militärgeographisches Institut (Imperial and Royal Military-Geographical Institute). The survey itself and the original 1:25K sheets (and 1:75K versions) date from the 1860s–80s, but updated 1:200K sheets were produced in the 1900s and 1910s, which are available on Commons here (along with some of the 19c. sheets). The military surveys are the main official maps of Austria-Hungary, possibly second only to the cadastral maps which define the municipal boundaries. The "mostly" here just refers to the fact that some areas lie beyond the bounds/temporal range of the survey maps, but I see how it could be ambiguous.
  • "...individual county maps for Hungary/Croatia-Slavonia...": The website linked to, which is also the source of those available on Commons (and the 1:200K survey sheets (here)), is lazarus.elte.hu, the (old) website of Eötvös Loránd University, Faculty of Informatics, Institute of Cartography and Geoinformatics. (They have a new page at terkep.elte.hu but have kept the old one up presumably to maintain the resources there.) The versions with the coloured districts are credited (on the maps themselves) as Kiadatott a vallás-és közoktatásügyi m. kir. Minister úr megbizásából, which I believe is the Royal Hungarian Minister of Religion and Public Education (Vallás- és Közoktatásügyi Minisztérium).
  • "...cross-referenced with maps covering all of Hungary" was intentionally broad as I used several maps, but only used them to double check the other sources rather than as sources in-and-of themselves.
    • The main one is A Magyar Állam Közigazgatási Térképe ("Administrative map of the Hungarian state"), 1914, credited to A M. Kir. Állami Nyomda Kiadása which I understand to be the official royal Hungarian state printer.
    • This map from Stielers Handatlas (hosted by Stanford University's David Rumsey Historical Map Collection) was also used for "cross-referencing". Since it shows essentially the whole region depicted in these maps it can also be used to verify areas beyond Hungary. However, being a 1911 map it has a few minor differences in some of the Hungarian county boundaries (e.g. Pusztamérges is shown as part of Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kiskun rather than Csongrád), and of course does not show the Balkan borders from 1913. (Some of the survey sheets also have this problem. I can see why 1914 was chosen but if the originals had not specified 1914 I would probably have chosen a slightly earlier date.)
    • A few other maps were also used but I don't have them to hand.

† I do not speak Hungarian so my understanding of the texts relies on machine translation, although I have checked the translations to the best of my ability.

As to the specific changes made, I did post a broad list of changes made (quoted here for convenience):

  • Bukovina: the original version showed the 1930s Romanian boundaries; Claude Zygiel's version was much better but still not accurate.
  • Various anachronistic/modern boundaries:
    • Tyrol–Italy: the previous versions showed the modern province boundaries (Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol).
    • Carinthia–Italy: the original version showed the modern boundaries while Claude Zygiel's version erroneously added extra territory to the Littoral/Gorizia.
    • Lower Austria–Bohemia/Moravia
    • Styria–Carniola
    • Galicia and Lodomeria: the previous versions used modern Polish Voivodeship and Ukrainian Oblast boundaries among other inaccuracies.
    • Bosnia and Herzegovina: did not include Sutorina and had incorrect borders with Croatia-Slavonia.
    • Balkan states: the previous versions largely showed the modern borders, which did not match those of 1914 (Southern Dobruja was Romanian, Montenegro was larger etc).
  • Romania–Hungary/Transylvania border: the original version showed modern Romanian boundaries; Claude Zygiel's version was better but still not accurate.
  • Kotor/Cattaro was missing in the original version and Claude Zygiel's version was inaccurate.
  • Hungarian county boundaries: almost all of them had some inaccuracy so I am not sure what the original source was. Claude Zygiel's version also offset them for some reason.
  • Teschen/Cieszyn/Těšín borders (Silesia)

...[I also added] a single additional enclave [(Moravian exclave)] – Nové Vrbno/Neu Würben/Goldseifen [– to Austrian Silesia].

I do not think it is practical to list every change specifically, as that would essentially be a list of all the crownlands and Hungarian counties (I think the only completely untouched one is Austria above the Enns/Upper Austria), and most are simply minor border corrections rather than the transfer of specific areas. I can be more specific about some of the changes though. For example, "Lower Austria–Bohemia/Moravia" refers to the areas around Feldsberg/Valtice and Gmünd/České Velenice, which were part of Austria below the Enns/Lower Austria until the 1919 Treaty of Saint-Germain. For the Tyrol–Italy border, the specific differences are the Valvestino, Pedemonte, and Fodom/(Cortina d')Ampezzo, which are now part of Brescia, Vicenza and Belluno respectively but were part of Tyrol (what is now Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol) until shortly after WWI (1920s I think).

Wikipedia is a mirror of real humanity. In today's humanity, more and more conflicting contradictions replace collaborative work, dogmatism and the blind application of a few rules replace thought, dialogue is useless, any divergent opinion is suspect, any improvement constitutes a fake, and we must faithfully propagate all errors from secondary sources so as not to fall into original research. I'm tired. --Claude Zygiel (talk) 16:19, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

  • There is no general answer to that question. Are you talking about some specific image? If it is an image on Commons, any specific requirements to license the image will be stated on the Commons file page of the image. Different images on Commons have different requirements. If you've looked there and still don't know what to do, please link the relevant file page here so someone can give you a concrete answer. - Jmabel ! talk 18:39, 30 October 2023 (UTC)

File overwriting not allowed

I often used the function "Upload a new version", but today I always get the message "File overwriting not allowed". I tried pictures with every lisence and none worked. Is there a new rule in place recently? If so, please clear all files, which are not allowed to be overwritten, of the "Upload a new version" button. It is really annoying to be given an option, that doesn't actually exist. - If this is not the case and the problem has a solution, please advise. Thanks in advance. MenkinAlRire (talk) 21:45, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

OK, I discovered the guideline edit from 28 October, where a stricter rule was implemented. This is hard to swallow, that every time I improve an image for better use in an article, I have to ask for an exception or upload it anew, so that I have to change the filenames in the page(s) I am editing. You may take my image edits as example, if they are really not an improvement, even if the edits may be more than minor. I wonder, how the banner is triggered; it has to be a quantitative measure, I suppose. Anyway, it's frustrating. MenkinAlRire (talk) 22:09, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

@MenkinAlRire: Please, if you are uploading another version of the same image under a different name, link them either with {{Other version}} or {{Derivative works}} / {{Derived from}}. - Jmabel ! talk 23:50, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
There was no way to tell. I am just learning the new ways;) But, sincerely, how could I know that? Until Yesterday it all went smooth. And now restrictions are gone into effect. I just followed the proposed way to use the upload wizard. There are no notifications or instructions whatsoever. And I wouldn't even know, where to link them (under 'source'?). MenkinAlRire (talk) 03:31, 30 October 2023 (UTC)
@MenkinAlRire: under "other versions" (which is in {{Information}} and quite a few other templates). Do I take it that up to now you have never modified a file in a way that required also preserving the prior version? That's unusual, for what it's worth. - Jmabel ! talk 06:14, 30 October 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: if there is no other version, I don't see any (possible) entry of that kind, so I have to know about the possibility of the addition first. Now I know, and I will use it, if indicated. Thank you.) - I wouldn't upload a new version, if I wasn't sure, that the edited image is better than before. The original file isn't destroyed, everyone may compare the versions (and in case reverse my version; I wouldn't fight it). I am usually rather annoyed about the number of bad images, that I have to examine one by one, before I choose the best to put in an article. And often I edit them, tilt, colour, shadows, light, sharpness, colour aberration, and try to enhance its clearness, that is to expose all information that I can get out of it (It is not a question of asthetics whatsoever). Balancing the tilt might lead to some context cut away. But substantially cropped versions I am always uploading as a new image (for which, I will follow your advice from now on). Hence I don't really understand your remark, that it would be unusual. - By the way, the obligatory new name differs only in a supplement at the end (e.g. _1, b or cropped) of the original filename as unsufficient as I may find it; otherwise I would have made an unintentional error. MenkinAlRire (talk) 21:20, 30 October 2023 (UTC)
Sharpening can actually be pretty controversial. It can introduce artifacts. I, for one, generally prefer to make my own decisions about what post-processing I want on my photos, and while I've had a few times where someone definitely improved a photo of mine, I've had far more where a change was not an unambiguous improvement, and I've reverted it. No comment on your particular edits here, which I haven't really studied, and if you've never or almost never been reverted then you are probably doing it well. - Jmabel ! talk 00:20, 31 October 2023 (UTC)
Yes, I am rather scrupolous, especially with sharpening. Almost always jpgs are already processed in the camera to its limits, but with too much saturation and drowned shadows. Images taken with bigger machines that are uploaded as they are often have room for improvement. As I said, the details are key, since wiki should provide information and is not a forum to show off with your nicest pictures (night scenes..., arrgh!) or even just to dumb your memory card here and to use it as your cloud (and let others do the work). If you edit the images yourself you should be safe from me,)
Another thing, maybe you might help, since yesterday I cannot log in on my tablet and phone anymore, where I was always logged in. On PC it's fine. I deleted cookies and tried again without success, always: "There seems to be a problem with your login session; this action has been canceled as a precaution against session hijacking. Please resubmit the form." If you don't know anything about it, you might have an idea where to look or who to ask. Thanks for your tip and the conversation, MenkinAlRire 2A02:8071:5072:9060:3C29:7006:10D1:37F4 13:41, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

Deleted the file since it was a copyright violation (it's from Elle's French magazine). I am going to upload media from an official Wikimedia Germany Event which is not my own work - Do you need VRT permission by WMDE or even individuals in your queue?

Hi, in consent with WMDE, I am going to upload a couple of videos featuring presentations from WikiCon 2023 (German speaking Wikimedia conference). Does Wikimedia Commons require {{Permission pending}} for them? Thanks for your help in advance. -- WikiCon2023Uploads (talk) 16:20, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

@WikiCon2023Uploads: copyright necessarily belongs to the person who owns the copyright (that is, the person who took the video). It would be simplest if they uploaded it themself, but if for some reason that is not convenient, assuming they have an account you can attribute to them and they can just log in and confirm the permission on the file talk page instead of going through VRT. - Jmabel ! talk 17:47, 31 October 2023 (UTC)
Ok, thanks. You'll see it's oftentimes a complex copyright situation where not only a single speaker can claim copyright over the entire work and the encoding and upload stuff is also somewhat complicated, so no, not all users would be even able to upload; not even all of them have accounts tied to their names real names, which they might have used. We'll probably go through VRT because that simplifies the process for me. -- WikiCon2023Uploads (talk) 18:03, 31 October 2023 (UTC)
I hadn't considered that the presentations would themselves each be copyrighted, but, yeah, they would be. Good luck in clearing this up. I hope people signed releases of some sort in advance, it would make this all a lot simpler. - Jmabel ! talk 20:58, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

Chicago Principles

Do we have an image of the 2020 John Ellison "free speech principles" letter to the incoming University of Chicago freshman class? If not, is there a copyright issue, or can this document be added to Commons (see here and here)? -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 16:49, 23 October 2023 (UTC)

@Cl3phact0: Certainly any non-trivial letter written in the last several decades is copyrighted, with the exception of letters written in a work capacity by the employees of the federal government and certain state and local governments that make their works PD by default. University of Chicago is a private college, so those exceptions could not possibly apply. Do you have any evidence of a free license? - Jmabel ! talk 18:35, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
No evidence whatsoever. It's widely published and a copy is available on the U of C site here, but nothing specifically indicating PD. -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 19:39, 23 October 2023 (UTC)

Noted and thanks for clarifying. I'm still struggling to grasp the nuances of what's ok and what's not here. Also guessing that a "fair-use" upload directly to enwiki for the relevant section of the Chicago Principles article would be a dead-end too? [NB: I'll make a note in my calendar to upload it in 2115 if we don't get it on Commons via VRT (or some other legitimate process) sooner.] Cheers, Cl3phact0 (talk) 17:20, 24 October 2023 (UTC)

Someone removed from Wikimedia the mug shot of Kenneth Chesebro.

I didn't upload the photo but have been editing the Chesebro article and don't understand why this happened.

Please advise why this was done. Thanks Utahredrock (talk) 01:49, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

@Utahredrock: There was never a File:Kenneth Chesebro mug shot.webp on Commons. en:File:Kenneth Chesebro mug shot.webp was, in fact, deleted, but Commons was not involved. I'd guess it was deleted on more or less the same basis as File:Kenneth Chesebro booking photo Fulton County Georgia.png, which was deleted per Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Copyright violations. The history on en-wiki describes the former file as "replaceable fair use," which is to say it was neither PD nor free-licensed, and since he is a living person it should, in principle, be possible to take a photo of him and free-license it. - Jmabel ! talk 05:25, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: en-wiki could decide it was fair use in an article -- not our affair here -- but that changes nothing for Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 23:50, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
You did ask a similar question here, and I gave you a similar answer about why en-wiki probably couldn't accept such a photo on a "fair use" basis. - Jmabel ! talk 05:27, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

Logotype

I wish to upload a brand new logotype for the school Hvilan Utbildning in Skåne, Sweden. Do I need the written permission from the school's president? If so, where shall I send that permission? Klurik123 (talk) 11:45, 27 October 2023 (UTC)

Hello. If the logo is below the COM:threshold of originality, then no permission is needed, and you can upload it here as public domain. Otherwise, the permission you would need is for the holder of the copyright to release it under a licence such as CC-BY-SA, which would allow anybody to reuse or alter it for any purpose (commercial or not) as long as they attributed the source. It is possible your institution would agree to this, but it seems unlikely. See COM:Licensing for more information.
If you are wanting to use the logo in a Wikipedia article, then some Wikipedias allow non-free content in some situations. For example, in English Wikipedia, en:WP:Logos tells you how you can use logos. I don't know whether Swedish Wikipedia allows this or not. ColinFine (talk) 15:42, 27 October 2023 (UTC)

NoonIcarus, RadioKAOS, Tineye fails to find it. Google lens finds multiple items, but is relatively silent on the dates, so is hard to determine whether the hits came first or the Commons upload. More research is required to determine this. 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 14:01, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

The upload occurred the day before the comment at File talk:Abbie Hoffman and Johanna Lawrenson.jpg. It's reasonably possible that the Commons copy was the first publication and was uploaded by or on behalf of someone with access to the original photo. However, it's not sourced as own work, but it's sourced from family archives and credited to Leah Kushner. As such, it would require evidence that the license was offered by the actual copyright owner. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:30, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
See Anita Hoffman with son.jpg. I think we have this well sorted out now as being uploaded by a legitimate heir, but if anyone still sees a need for VRT, please do it sooner rather than later. @RadioKAOS and Jmabel: Hi. I'm sorry, that's correct. From the description I could see that the source was family photos. If there aren't issues with the copyright because of this, then that's alright. --NoonIcarus (talk) 01:27, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

Photos after 1928

I found a bunch of photos of the Red Hill Band in the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center archive. I've uploaded all of the images that were taken before 1928. What does the process look like for uploading the photos after 1928? I have photos from the 1940s (one of a parade and another of their first car), I have one of the 1950 anniversary concert, I have a photo of the band at the New Goshenhoppen band shell in 1975, and one from 2002 at the Upper Perkiomen High School. I also have a poster for one of their concerts in 1970 and the poster for their 100th year anniversary (looks like their was a design contest for it). The band itself is still around and the members I've contacted have expressed interest in uploading any photos I can find. I asked the librarian at the Schwenkfelder who sent me the photos if it would be okay to upload them to Wikipedia and they said yes as well. TipsyElephant (talk) 12:04, 28 October 2023 (UTC)

The process for post-1928 American photographs is essentially finding out the provenance of the photographs, which would hopefully tell you when they were published and if they had a copyright notice. Before 1978, published works needed copyright notice in order to gain a copyright, and there is U. S. law that publication before 1978 occurred when the photograph left the custody of the original photographer. For a 2002 photograph, you'd need to have the photographer contact COM:VRT to grant permission for a free license since a 2002 photograph is automatically copyrighted. @Abzeronow: I believe most of these pictures have been taken by people closely associated with the band. Many of the photos were kept by LeRoy Shultz and eventually donated to the Schwenkfelder Heritage Center. A few of them were donated by a women, but they didn't have the name of the person. I asked about licensing and copyrights on one of the photos a while back and the librarian said it didn't have a license or copyright. Should I contact the librarian again and confirm that none of these have a copyright? If you had to obtain a copyright notice through some formal process then I highly doubt that any of them had a copyright notice. How would I confirm this? TipsyElephant (talk) 01:55, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
@Clindberg: , there would have to be a "copyright" or a copyright symbol with the year somewhere with the photograph if it were published before 1978. Do you know when these were donated? Abzeronow (talk) 16:49, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
If they were were distributed individually before 1989 then yes there needed to be a copyright symbol or the word "copyright" (or abbreviation) somewhere. If they were part of a publication, then a copyright notice for the entire publication would cover any photos inside (other than advertisements). Note that the date starts from publication, not from when they were actually taken. Anything published before 1964 also needed to have its copyright renewed with the US Copyright Office, which was exceedingly rare with individual photos. It gets more difficult with private photos; those could have been unpublished. Although if someone gave out prints at the time, that could well be publication (there was no clear definition in law, so it's always muddy). If they were donated to the center before 1989 they are probably fine. If they were prints distributed around at the time (so one person could collect them) they are probably fine. If they were personal photos not donated before 1989, that could be a technical problem. Carl Lindberg (talk) 18:33, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
@Abzeronow and Carl Lindberg: I've contacted the librarian to hopefully get more information. None of the photos have copyright symbols anywhere on them (front or back). They were donated in two batches. One was donated by LeRoy Shultz and another was donated by a woman who was in the band. Some of the images were distributed locally as postcards and some of them identified names of people in the picture with a phone number to call if you recognized any of the unidentified people. I don't when these were distributed, but I would guess it was before 1989. Some of the photos have been used in newspaper articles. If they were used in newspaper articles after 1989 will that be a problem? TipsyElephant (talk) 19:31, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
@Clindberg: looks like I got your username wrong the first time around so I'm re-pinging you. TipsyElephant (talk) 19:33, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
If they are postcards from before 1989 with no notice they are definitely fine. You had to have a notice on all copies (well, at least most) so publication elsewhere would not matter.
I just found one that was not a postcard as far as I'm aware that was published in a newspaper in 1950. Would that be okay as well?
Almost certainly. You can check this page for the newspaper to see when its first renewals were for. If not listed, or a later date than 1950, it's fine. Carl Lindberg (talk) 21:46, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
@Clindberg and Abzeronow: I was going to use the upload wizard to upload these photos, but I don't see an option for photographs taken between 1928 and 1989 with no copyright notices. Which option should I be selecting in the upload wizard to properly upload the photos? TipsyElephant (talk) 16:30, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
@TipsyElephant: 1928 through 1977 without notice => {{PD-US-no notice}}. 1978 through 28 February 1989 without notice, and without subsequent registration within 5 years => {{PD-US-1978-89}}. If there's no easy way to do it in the Wizard, just make the correction by editing promptly after uploading. - Jmabel ! talk 17:07, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
@TipsyElephant: Choose "This is someone else's work and is free to share" and then "Another reason not mentioned above" and enter {{PD-US-no notice}} or {{PD-US-1978-89}} in the box as appropriate. --bjh21 (talk) 00:00, 6 November 2023 (UTC)

That depends on how ancient or antique the depicted items are. Our standard with {{PD-old-assumed}} is at least 120 years. Our standard with {{PD-Venezuela}} is 60 years past publication for "an audiovisual work, a photograph, a broadcast work or a computer program" and 60 years past death of the author for other works per the “Venezuelan Law on Copyright of August 14th, 1993, Art. 25, 26 and 38” (details).   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:06, 8 November 2023 (UTC)

Image accessibility

There's an image - File:Sygreversed.png - that has poor accessibility due to use of white on a white background. The original uploader appears to no longer be on Wikimedia. Is there any type of template or tag I could add to the page or other way of alerting other editors to this page that the image needs editing/adjusting/altering for accessibility so as many people as possible can properly read and view the it?
