Currently, File:Party per saltire gules and argent.svg is a redirect to File:Party per saltire argent and gules.svg. This is incorrect, as they are not the same thing: "per saltire argent and gules" has argent (silver) on top, as shown, whereas "per saltire gules and argent" would have gules (red) on top, like this; compare other files in Category:Party per saltire shields. However, I could not figure out how to "upload new version" at a redirect (I only see that option at the target file). And the 'rename' gadget won't let me request that File:Party per saltire gules and argent (temporary name).svg be renamed to File:Party per saltire gules and argent.svg. So hopefully someone here can do whatever needs to be done: delete the redirect and then move the file? -sche (talk) 14:40, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

Just by curiosity, was the previous version (2017) of "File:Party per saltire gules and argent.svg" really a misplaced duplicate of an argent and gules or was it an actual gules and argent? -- Asclepias (talk) 15:29, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

Is it ok to upload a photograph I took of a book & original art published Jan 1, 1921

Hello,

I own and took a photo of a book and original art created/published January 1, 1921, by Olive Roberts Barton (artist is E.R. Higgins) for her book "Nancy & Dick in Helter-Skelter-Land" I hope to use in a wikipedia article titled "Helter Skelter"

I am new to uploading a picture to Wik.

Thanks Casarachi (talk) 20:05, 1 August 2023 (UTC)

Per [1], this was published in the USA. Any book published in the US before 1928 should be in the public domain there and therefore OK for uploading to Wikimedia Commons with the {{PD-US-expired}} tag. --Rosenzweig τ 20:55, 1 August 2023 (UTC)

Upload images to Wikimedia Commons with OpenRefine

I tried to upload several images to wikimedia commons using OpenRefine. I reconciled and created new items for each item, and edited schema with Target Wikibase instance as Wikimedia Commons. After I clicked 'Upload edits to Wikibase', it showed percentage completed; I also logged in my account. But I can't find uploads in my 'Uploads' or 'Contributions', neither can I find the images I uploaded with the file names. Thus I believe my upload operation did not succeed. What may be the reason? Categorization of images according to background objects

Would you please point me to the Commons policy re Categorization of images according to background objects which are not the main subject of the image? In the example shown below, various objects such as vehicles in the background have been categorized. Is this in line with Commons policy please? To my mind, a user looking at the images in the category "Mercedes-Benz W115" would probably not be interested in an image of a tram with an inconsequential "Mercedes-Benz W115" in the background.

GTHO (talk) 04:27, 3 August 2023 (UTC)

As far as I know, there really isn't a precise policy on this. It's more of a "would it be useful to a user?" In general, the older a photo, the more likely it's OK to include minor details, because it is less likely we will have a large number of good images from the period. FWIW, I would not have added this category, but might have added a similar category for an image from 1910.- Jmabel ! talk 14:48, 3 August 2023 (UTC)

How do I go about replacing a jpeg with a higher-resolution png?

The image File:Zwikmachine_1885.jpg is used in 7 places on the various wikipedias. It's a low-resolution 316x500 jpeg-encoded image of the first page of an 1883 U.S. patent. I would like to replace it with the full-resolution 2320x3408 official bilevel scan of the page by the patent office. The jpeg format is unsuitable for a bilevel image. I've created a png file (which losslessly fits all 7.9 megapixels into 114 kbytes). Now what? I'd like to just use the "Upload a new version of this file" button, but it seems that's not possible because the format doesn't match the file name (should the encoding really be part of the filename?). I guess I need to create a whole new upload, and then go to all 7 places the jpeg is used and manually change them to the png? (I tried but failed to find an entry about this in the faqs.) Birdfern (talk) 21:11, 3 August 2023 (UTC)

No, the encoding mismatches the original file. The filename extension is determined by the file format by default. If you try to upload a PNG version as a replacement to a JPEG file, it won't work, because the format mismatches. It doesn't make sense to look at a JPEG file that is actually a PNG file. Also, I would strongly suggest you to convert it to either PDF or DejaVu format, because that way you can retain high quality of the scan and the renderer will produce a sharper JPEG thumbnail for it. Or keep it in JPEG format. JPEG thumbnail generator works better than PNG, because the thumbnail is sharper. Polda18 D C 05:48, 4 August 2023 (UTC)
@Polda18 No. PNG-Thumb-Rendering on Commons works better for drawings. JPEG-Thumb-Rendering on commons is optimized for fotos. And do not enclose a single image in a PDF of DJVU these are formats for texts or multiple images, not meant for a single (not vectorized) image. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 07:15, 4 August 2023 (UTC)
Right. Then it's best to simply upload it as a new file anyway and link to it via a template on the original file's description page. Polda18 D C 09:21, 4 August 2023 (UTC)
Okay, I uploaded the png as a new file and added this at the end of the jpeg's description: "(See File:Matzeliger_lasting_machine_diagram.png for full-resolution image.)". Is there a particular template you had in mind that would be better for making that link? Birdfern (talk) 18:07, 4 August 2023 (UTC)

Missing permission

Hi, I am reaching out here to ask whether am I right in placing No permission since template on File:Sonia Gandhi 2019.jpg file as the permission do not indicate the permission from the author as stated on the original website: https://sansad.in/ls/privacyPolicy and look here for the original website the file publisher provided the link https://www.india.gov.in/my-government/indian-parliament/sonia-gandhi where that content was taken from the other website and as said above the other official website provided a requirement to obtain permission from the authority. There are many other such files that I have come across. But I want to make sure that I am doing right before placing the template and notifying the publisher of the files on wikimedia. It actually seems like the source has been improperly indicated (linking to an actual image rather than the page it has been taken from). That source may be either [2] or [3]. The latter one seems like the correct source, because the prior takes data including the picture from the latter. Privacy Policy (especially Copyright notice) clearly states that as long as it isn't used in a misleading manner, it is allowed. So copyright clearly isn't an issue here. • @LeepKendall: By "a signed permissions form" do you mean something for VRT? Send a photo of the form to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. Deleting a self-published file...

I would like to request a deletion of a file that I have uploaded as a .TIFF file. Since uploading, I have found that a .PNG file would possibly suit better as this image was 89.7 mb after straightening. I automatically assumed that a .TIFF file was suitable for WikiCommons. I would like the file in question deleted so I can upload a new one in a .PNG format. The file in question is Cobar Mining Sign, Cobar.tiff - Or would it be suitable? As I would like to know more about the image that I uploaded. Is a .TIFF image is bad or can I upload a .PNG file of the same thing? Extra information is needed. AdamDaleyAUS (talk) 04:11, 5 August 2023 (UTC)

  • Jmabel - I think I'll leave it as it is. The .PNG file (Around 35.8 mb) is just below half the size of the .TIF file. The only two edits for this image .PNG would have been the Shadows (35% default value using Adobe Photoshop 24.7 version) and the Straighening of the image. @FamilyMom: Ruslik is right that you need to take this up on Wikipedia, not here on Wikimedia Commons, but I happen to be an administrator on both. Please read en:WP:COI. Clearly, you have a conflict of interest in editing an encyclopedia article about your own son. That doesn't mean your edits are wrong, it just means you are not the person who should be editing the article. (I haven't looked at the content of your edit, so I have no comment on that in this case.) You need to provide your sources and indicate what you want edited, but have someone else make the edit. Probably the best place to provide your sources is en:Talk:Ben Breedlove. @David S. Soriano: It seems to me that you would best not do this. You were blocked for uploading out-of-scope self-made works of art that had no apparent educational purpose. The fact that someone might be using one in a book does not make it educational (and hence within scope); plenty of things in books are still out of Commons' scope.

  • Those are two licences (CC-by 3.0 and CC-by 4.0). Their attributions are the same.
By policy, you can choose either and it's your free choice. By practice, CC-by 4.0 is a later version of nominally the same licence, and would be preferred. Andy Dingley (talk) 14:51, 7 August 2023 (UTC)

@Zeitung33+: I'd recommend including the link, especially if you are doing this online. It's a good convenience for a user to be able to get back to the "original" and also an easy way to make sure you conform to the CC license, since the Commons page will link to that license. - Jmabel ! talk 19:20, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
Thanks very much. Zeitung33+ (talk) 19:31, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
@Zeitung33+: The attribution, stritctly speaking, as expressed in the 2008 communication, is: www.kremlin.ru. The mention and link to the CC license is a requirement of the license itself. So, the essential things to write when reusing the image could be, for example, something approximately like this: Photo: www.kremlin.ru, licensed CC BY 3.0. You can format it as you want, as long as the attribution and license are there. The mention of the Commons link as source is not required by the license, unless the copyright owner specifically included it in the attribution, but it can be very useful to add it if the www.kremlin.ru website does not mention the license. It allows the readers to understand the situation. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:42, 7 August 2023 (UTC)

Uploading images with common description

Hello, I have some images of geometric tiling patterns that I wish to upload. There is some explanatory text common to each image, which I want to maintain in one place, with a link to this in each image description field, saying e.g. "For general information, see <link>". Where should I put this common explanatory text?

Also, is there any way for me to upload multiple images at once and have the "For general information, see <link>" text automatically put in each description field, without the need for me to go and add it manually to every image?

I hope it is clear what I am trying to achieve. Thanks for any help. Tai Ling (talk) 22:16, 5 August 2023 (UTC)

  • @Tai Ling: We don't usually do the "for general information, see <link>." Would it make sense to put these in a category and put the general information on the category? Failing that, possibly make a template for the common text.
  • I know there are ways to do mass uploads, but I never use them so I've got nothing. Someone else might be able to help you out on that front. What I do is use Special:Upload and just copy-paste identical text.
  • Can someone help this person out on the mass-upload front? - Jmabel ! talk 22:48, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel, @Tai Ling: What do you mean by "mass upload". The wizard can upload 150 (500) images in one go, and you can have repeated uses with the same preferences. However if you have really large numbers of files that you want to upload unsupervised, than you will need one of the upload tools that you can install locally on your computer. There are command line tools and tools with a GUI. Only you can know, what fits your needs best. If you habe the "common information" in a template: This will work with the wizard and every external tool. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 08:42, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, I tried a test, and the "copy to all" feature of the upload wizard seems to be what I need. As far as the template is concerned, can anyone show me an existing template that does the same kind of thing that I want, so that I can copy this and just change the text content? Tai Ling (talk) 22:39, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
Btw, it does not seem appropriate to put the common description against the category, as there could be other files in the category to which my precise explanation does not apply. Tai Ling (talk) 22:47, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
    • That last is fine. I was considering the case where they were all of one building, event, etc. or something else that would deserve a category of its own. - Jmabel ! talk 23:33, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
    • @Tai Ling: A template with no parameters is pretty trivial. You just create it in "Template" space (e.g. Template:Foo), write it as wikitext just like anywhere else, and include it on a file page by the syntax {{Foo}}. If that's still not clear, tell me here what you want the template to say and what you want it to be called. - Jmabel ! talk 23:42, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, I created the template and it seems to be working fine, as required for what I want to do. Thanks for your help with this. Tai Ling (talk) 12:29, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

You can use Template:Licensed-FOP to describe the situation. If it is a photograph that you took you chose "this file is my own work" and choose whichever free license for your photograph that you wish. You can put in the source that it is an own work, and for author, you can include both your user name and the author of the object in the photograph (if known). Abzeronow (talk) 16:10, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
I have long thought our (Commons') text about 'is this your work or someone else's?' could stand to be made a little clearer... I have relatedly wondered, when I use e.g. a blank shield and clipart of a lion (both hosted on Commons) to create an image of what a lion with its colours counterchanged per fess looks like, is that resulting image 'my work' or 'someone else's work'? It's both. -sche (talk) 14:48, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

How to identify the representative image for a category

I've been organizing a category of street art that has multiple images for each piece by moving them to a piece category. Is there a template I could use to identify one of the images as the representative image for each category? I'd like eventually make a gallery and that would make it easier to display the best image for the piece. Thanks Carlos Fonseca (talk) 22:28, 7 August 2023 (UTC)

  • @Carlosefonseca: it's always a bit hard to answer questions like this in the abstract, and you don't give any example. If there is a corresponding Wikidata item, you can pick what you think is the most characteristic image as the image associated (in Wikidata) with that item. Everywhere you see an image in a {{Wikidate Infobox}}, that's how it gets there. - Jmabel ! talk 00:19, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: I've seen the Wikidata Info boxes and they are probably what I want. I will look at them for this. I haven't yet because the format still feels a bit weird but I'll get some inspiration from existing items and make something that makes sense. The category I've been organizing is Category:Street art in Lisbon. Thank you for your suggestion. Carlos Fonseca (talk) 08:00, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

I have created a new logo for the meta:Association of Exclusionist Wikipedians. It is derived from File:Diamond Icon Transparent.png, with text in FreeSerif and modifications done in GIMP. How do I license this, since the image is CC0, but FreeSerif is GPL? Edward-Woodrow (talk) 16:48, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

Chart/Infographic with false information?

I cannot find anything about this anywhere, but if the infographic has both wrong and misleading information, is there a way to flag that? Not all of it wrong, but some of it sure is.

Uh, if you need to know which one it is, it’s this one. Septics (talk) 18:36, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

@Septics: "Wrong and misleading" can be a subjective appreciation. You could write a comment to explain your objections, using the template Template:Disputed fact in the description. It can be useful in certain rather obvious cases. Or you you can write a comment in the talk page of the file, expecially if it's complex, and optionally place a link to it in the description. But in this particular case, considering that the source is a scientific article from someone at the Department of Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, this could be a debate for experts and it could deserve more than a simple expression of disagreement. I would suggest that you first contact the author of the article and discuss that with her. There is a contact address at the end of the article. Or if the address doesn't work, it is probably possible to find how to contact her. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:04, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

At File:Brexpiprazole.svg, I recently reverted a older version. But the current image and several of the older versions seem to have gone blank. Previously, they weren't. Images at proj Gutenberg "Ancient and Modern Ships"

I'm interested in uploading images from project Gutenberg's Ancient and Modern Ships, in particular, figures 13 – 20 on pages 40ff].

On the one hand, the very beginning of "Ancient and Modern Ships" starts right out with "This eBook is for the use of anyone anywhere at no cost and with almost no restrictions whatsoever", but a bit below that, there's a parenthetical stating, "This file was produced from images generously made available by The Internet Archive", so maybe it doesn't include the images, and we'd have to try to find them at IA instead? The licensing status of the images is unclear to me.

Finally, the full Gutenberg license is at the end of the work, and also at https://gutenberg.org/policy/license.html, where the strings image and figure do not appear anywhere within it.

Bottom line: can I upload the images? Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 01:55, 5 August 2023 (UTC)

  • @Mathglot: It appears to be a reproduction of a 1906 work, with links added. The illustrations are credited on page xv: "The illustrations marked * are published by kind permission of the Committee of the Egypt Exploration Fund. Those marked † are taken from "The History of Merchant Shipping and Ancient Commerce," and were kindly lent by Messrs. Sampson Low, Marston & Co., Ltd. Those marked ‡ are reproduced from "La Marine Française de 1792 à nos jours," by l'Amiral Paris." I'd make a strong guess that by now they are all in the public domain, but you will want to work out the status of those individual sources, all of them presumably publishing before 1906. Still, if some illustrator lived past 1953, they could still be copyrighted. - Jmabel ! talk 03:02, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
Public domain book published in 1906. In the context of the gutenberg copy, I suppose that "images made available by the IA" means that they worked from the digitized images of the pages of one of the copies available at the IA (not "images" as in only the "illustrations"). IA has a few different digitizations. Other websites also have copies. I think there's no problem getting the illustrations from any digitized copy you find to have the best quality. -- Asclepias (talk) 03:13, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, all. I'll keep this in mind, and see what's the best path, here. Mathglot (talk) 03:19, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

File tagged since Jan. 2023

This image was tagged by me as unsourced on Jan. 26, 2023. For some reason, it was included in the category "Media without a source as of 12 November 2021", that doesn't even exist. Due to this fact, the issue was not addressed by any sysop. I just found out about it, by pure chance. Can someone give it a look, please? Also, can someone tell me what did I do wrong? Thanks. Kacamata! Dimmi!!! 18:57, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

@Kacamata: In the history of the page, it can be seen that the uploader later changed the date in the no source template. Apparently by mistake. That mistake on the date is not yours. However, why there is a no source tag may not be obvious for everybody. If the source is false, it may be more useful to use the copyvio tag, with a link to precise evidence of the copyvio, or to use a deletion request. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:51, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
Hi, @Asclepias Thanks for the answer. When I can find evidence that the image is indeed a copyvio, I tag it as a copyvio, but in this case, I couldn't find it, but the image is not "own work", so I tagged it as unsourced. It gives the uploader 7 days to fix the issue. Sometimes, the uploader can provide a proper source for the image. Kacamata! Dimmi!!! 20:02, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

Uploading photos on Wikipedia

Hello, I supervise the wikipedia pages for writer, Høgni Mohr. I want to upload some photos that the author has sent me and these are photos that he owns. But I can't upload any of them, because when I try a text pops up that says "We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikipedia Commons...". How can I upload them? Lymohr (talk) 20:45, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

Firstly, remember that Commons only accepts free works. This means that by sharing one's work on Wikimedia Commons, one grants anyone permission to use, copy, modify, and sell it without notifying one. So to share someone else's work, we need explicit permission from the copyright holder that this is okay. See Commons:Licensing for more information. Jonteemil (talk) 21:03, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
@Lymohr You could ask the author if they want to upload the pictures themselves to Commons under a suitable license. Relativity (talk) 02:09, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
@Lymohr: What do you mean when you say you "supervise" these pages? - Jmabel ! talk 04:49, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
This editor appears to be making major changes to the subject's biographies. If this is a case of paid editing, editor must immediately disclose that fact and refer to the WMF Terms of Use. Doesn't matter what project. Elizium23 (talk) 06:43, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

@0mtwb9gd5wx, thanks! I wouldn't be surprised if we've got some IPv4 socks hanging out as well. It's been a long time between 2018 and 2023! Elizium23 (talk) 08:45, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
I've opened discussions with administrators on the Danish and Faroese Wikipedias, regarding undisclosed paid editing, and we'll need to sort out what it means with these multiple accounts, though they appear to be serially created, used, and abandoned, along with a few ranges of IPv4 ranges, they have exclusively edited the BLP on those two Wikipedias.
Should Lymohr remain in good standing, and chooses to disclose Paid Editing status, they can continue to work out the copyright ownership thing, but perhaps the articles should be deleted instead, because Nudlan/Lymohr seem to be the only ones creating and editing them, so we'll need to test the notability of this subject. Elizium23 (talk) 00:28, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
If it is paid editing, then foundation:Policy:Terms of Use#paid-contrib-disclosure applies, but there is no comparable cross-wiki rule about unpaid COI editing, and da-wiki appears to have only that and an NPOV policy, not a COI policy of its own. - Jmabel ! talk 01:11, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
If you'll kindly follow the link posted above, it's clear that Nudlan was blocked for undisclosed paid editing (UPE), then disclosed such and was unblocked. If Lymohr is under the same contract as Nudlan, or is the same person, then it's paid editing, and as you say, is a cross-wiki rule that it must be disclosed, with editors abiding by certain ground rules. Thanks. Elizium23 (talk) 01:42, 10 August 2023 (UTC)

What is one to make of file name + § Licensing

File:01 Variations Serieuses Op 54 Mendelssohn Mark Gasser piano Klavier live recording 2009. permission given by pianist for free public domain.ogg states in its own file name that it is within the public domain, yet § Licensing states the file is under CC BY-SA 3.0/GFDL.

Hi Ellada Kiryakulova. You should take a look at Commons:Photographs of identifiable people for more information on this. I wish to upload a photograph of Vesna Goldsworthy who has a Wikipedia article. I had the foresight to inform her that the photograph would be shared on Wikimedia and of the sharing license. She determined that the photographer agreed to the sharing license. I see that you wish him to personally submit a release. Your Interactive Release Generator states that the file may be posted by someone else, but it needs the file's URL. May I submit the file(s) pending the formal release? @Oldsilenus: the reason for the warning on the page is that it doesn't indicate a license. Do you know what license the owner of the image will issue? If so, please add that to the page and remove the "no license" notice. If not, turn the "no license" notice into a normal DR, which allows more time before the image would be deleted for lack of license. - Jmabel ! talk 17:17, 10 August 2023 (UTC)

I do not wish to upload the file again, unless necessary, since this will only increase your workload. Any suggestions about locating it? I will check again, but the URL was https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:VesnaGoldsworthy_creditMartinFigura_crop.jpg . I have received no notification of deletion or acceptance. I am sure that it takes you at least 24 hrs. to respond to the e-mail permission. Thanks again. Oldsilenus (talk) 18:53, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
Voila! It seems to be now accepted. I assume that if I post different pixel sizes of the photo that is covered under the license, and no further authorizations are required.Oldsilenus (talk) 18:57, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
@Oldsilenus: there is never any reason to post different pixel sizes of the photo. Always post the highest resolution available; the software will always downsize appropriately as needed.

Form to e-mail to owner for permission

Sorry. I came across this earlier today but I am having no luck now. As stated in prior question the file File:VesnaGoldsworthy creditMartinFigura crop.jpg was added pending permission.I now need the form to verify that the permission has been obtained. The image was uploaded so that I would have a URL required by the form. Oldsilenus (talk) 02:37, 10 August 2023 (UTC)

@Oldsilenus: I had understood your first question as meaning that the photographer was prepared to send the permission (either with the release generator or otherwise), as soon as you inform him of the url of the uploaded file, in accordance with the procedure detailed at Commons:Volunteer Response Team#If you are NOT the copyright holder. Is that correct? If you have informed the photographer, it's now up to him to send the required permission. I had also assumed, perhaps too quickly, that you already knew which free license the photographer will use. If you do know it, you can add the corresponding license template to the file description page (for example CC-BY-SA-4.0). Anyway, if you do not know the license and if the file is deleted because it is missing the license template, it will be restored after Wikimedia receives the license permission from the photographer. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:39, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
Sorry- I found the form to send him at 12:00 AM Eastern Time. At 10:30 AM today I received word that the copyright holder e-mailed the permission to you. I have not checked if the file was deleted yet or not. I am also sorry that I had difficulty with the PP template. Oldsilenus (talk) 16:50, 10 August 2023 (UTC)

  • Convenience link: en:Erwin Friedrich Baumann
  • @HF Baumann: assuming the house still exists, the simplest thing would be to photograph it yourself and upload that. Or are you talking about a specific old photo of the house? If so, was he the photographer? If so, and if you inherited his intellectual property rights, you can use an "heirs" license" such as {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}. Similarly for anything else where you inherited intellectual property rights.
  • 1938 photos are typically (though not universally) still in copyright. If the photographer was alive in 1953, then it is still copyrighted. So:
    • If you know who the photographer was, and they died in 1953 or later:
      • Only the heir to their intellectual property can grant a license.
        • If you know who that is, you can approach them and ask them to go through the COM:VRT process to grant permission.
        • If you don't know who that is you are out of luck.
    • If you know who the photographer was, and they died in 1952 or earlier:
      • The photograph is in the public domain, and you or anyone may upload it. Use {{PD-old-70}} in lieu of a license.
    • If you don't know who the photographer was, you are out of luck.

Upload protected File:Flag of Kazakhstan.svg requires correction

This file is upload protected due to a history of edit warring over the colors that should be used, but there is a separate problem: at some point during edit warring, the eye of the eagle got broken - the pupil is no longer visibly distinct from the rest of the eye due to incorrect (gold) color applied to its outline instead of turquoise. Compare against older versions of the file from before 2022 (quite high zoom required). Can someone with the necessary permissions please fix? The stroke color of the circle at cx="1019.8" cy="720.507" should be #00abc2 rather than #ffec2d. Thanks! - 2406:3003:2077:1E60:E1DD:1E85:92A6:C507 20:44, 11 August 2023 (UTC)

Uploading old photo

I found an old photo in the archive of a library and heritage center [4] I requested access to the image, they had me fill out a form, and then they sent me the image. I told them I intended to use it on Wikipedia and asked what license the image was under. They said there was no license and that they would like me to simply indicate that the image came from the Schwenkfelder Library and Heritage center. Can I upload the file? It looks like it's about 100 years old, but the upload instructions specify that an image should be 150 years old. The instructions also indicate that there should be explicit permission. How would I prove that I have permission? TipsyElephant (talk) 01:04, 12 August 2023 (UTC)

  • @TipsyElephant: It's going to be on the borderline for U.S., where photos published before 1928 are public domain, but many photos published in 1928 or later are not. By its nature, something like this would almost certainly have been taken for purposes of publication (even distribution of copies to the members of the band would have constituted publication), so we can assume it was published very shortly after it was taken. Still, to use {{PD-US-expired}} you'd have to know for sure it was from 1927 or earlier. Odd that they have no info about source or date. In the online version, I can't read what is on the photo at lower left. Does it effectively give date information? Failing that, can you research during what years this group might have existed?
  • If it's from 1928 or later, there are still some possibilities, but it gets more complicated (if you want to see how complicated, see Commons:Hirtle chart). Short version: under the laws of the time, copyright wasn't automatic, and there is a fair chance this was never copyrighted, and a near-certainty that its copyright would not have been renewed after 28 years (again, no longer a requirement, but it was then), so one or another way we can probably accept it, but pre-1928 would be by far the simplest case. - Jmabel ! talk 02:13, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
  • @Jmabel: it's not the most reliable source ever, but this source indicates the picture was taken in 1925. I could ask the librarian if they have any more information on the picture if that would help. If it was taken in 1925, is it okay for me to upload it? I saw mention here on the help desk about emailing Wikimedia with evidence of being provided permission. Is that an additional step that I should take. I started a Wikipedia article draft here, and to be transparent I do have a COI (I know someone in the band). TipsyElephant (talk) 02:34, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
  • The text at the bottom left of the picture says "I.M. Moll" and below that "Red Hill, PA". I'm assuming that's either the name of the person who took the photo or the name of the building in the picture. I could look into that and see what I can find. TipsyElephant (talk) 02:39, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
    • Yes, 1925 would definitely do. No need to bother the VRT people with this. Just date it as {{1925}}, cite the PDF you just linked in the description as giving that 1925 date, and use {{PD-US-expired}} in lieu of a license. I'm not sure whether you can do this all with the Upload Wizard (I never use it, I use Special:Upload but that is difficult for most beginners), but come as close as you can and then edit the file page to get it right. If you want it checked after you think you are finished, feel free to post back here with a link to the new file page, someone can check your work. - Jmabel ! talk 02:41, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
Yes, I. M. Moll was a photographer, according to this obituary dated January 10, 1934 [5]. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:49, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel and Asclepias: I was able to upload the photo using the Wizard (File:Red Hill Band 1925.tif), but I wasn't sure how to cite the source. Can I use the standard citation templates that are used on Wikipedia? If I do, do I need a reflist template at the bottom of the page? I also wasn't sure whether or not I should link the obituary for I.M. Moll. TipsyElephant (talk) 14:10, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
The source of the large image is directly the Library and Heritage Center, not the webpage, but the link to the webpage can also be there as additional information. There's no need of complicated things like a reflist template. The obituary is not necessary either, although it may be added optionally for information. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:21, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel and Asclepias: thank you both for all of the help. I have a few remaining questions if you are willing. I have included the location of the picture. At first I thought the image was taken at "113 Main St, Red Hill, PA 18076" because multiple sources indicate that the band first practiced at the L.B. Miller cigar factory across the street from the Red Hill post office. However, I just went to the library today and found "Montgomery County, The Second Hundred Years. Vol. 1" which indicates that the band had a rehearsal hall built in 1924 on the corner of Eighth and Main. It doesn't specify which corner and based on the sources I've found the building was later converted into a clothing factory and then burned down in 1931. There's a very old building at "800 Main St, Red Hill, PA 18076" that looks like it could have been the clothing factory if any part of it had been salvaged after the fire. However, the front of the building doesn't match the photograph. If I include the Latitude and Longitude of this building as the location of where the picture was taken is that considered original research? Should I remove the location or should I cite the book I found? TipsyElephant (talk) 16:45, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
@TipsyElephant: Just state as accurately as you can what you know, where you know it from, and what you are not sure of. This is a media repository, and has different standards than an encyclopedia. - Jmabel ! talk 17:04, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
If you want, you can write some text in the description field to describe your observations. Just be careful not to state speculations as if they were factual certainties. If the location is not certain, it's probably better to remove the coordinates. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:16, 12 August 2023 (UTC)

Uploading yearbook photos of school buildings

I updated the history of Whitman Hanson Regional High School site and want to add photos of the two previous buildings described. These are photos from the 1963 and 1942 yearbooks. Since the buildings no longer exist, I cannot take live photographs of them. Is there no way to add these photographs? Broodge45 (talk) 14:30, 12 August 2023 (UTC)

Look if the books include a copyright notice either for the whole books or for the photos. If not, that's good, with the template "PD-US-no notice". If there's a notice, you'll have to check if the copyright was renewed. If not, that's good, with the template "PD-US-not renewed". -- Asclepias (talk) 14:44, 12 August 2023 (UTC)

.PNG Files

I converted my .RAW image into a .JPG while when I straightened the image it required me to save in a .PNG file. Are .PNG files accepted and are they just as good as .JPG files? What is the downside for .PNG files? AdamDaleyAUS (talk) 04:03, 10 August 2023 (UTC)

The thumb-generator at commons uses an optimization on PNGs that is better suited for graphics than photos and with JPG the other way around. In principle RAW to PNG would make a better quality than JPG could. But as long as no solution for thumbs has been created at commons, thumbs of photos will look better on MW sites, if they use JPG. However you could convert your RAW images to PNG, make adjustments and than convert to lossless webp (importent: chose the lossless option in cwebp.exe) for upload. You would circumvent commons restrictions and publish a photo in best possible quality. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) ([[User talk:|talk]]) 09:01, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
  • C.Suthorn - I have saved an image directly from a .RAW file into a .PNG file. While looking at the details of the .PNG file that saving it as that has removed ALL the details of that image. Deleting the information when it was taken, along with deleting Camera Model, GPS details etc. The only change to the file was that it was slightly off-straight. The file size is 40.6 MB. Am I doing something wrong here for all the detail information of that file to go missing when saving as a .PNG? AdamDaleyAUS (talk) 23:28, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
  • Afaik, PNG can preserve EXIF information, but it may depend on the software used --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 13:12, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
@Yann, @PantheraLeo1359531 all image formats that are actually used in the real world (and in Commons) allow MetaData. AFAIK all support EXIF, and probably all IPTC too. webp may not support XMP. webp does not support thumb images. JPEG only supports thumb images in jpeg. There are difference which format supports which subset of MetaData. Commons does show only a subset of the MetaData of the image and it differs by format. Commons does (at present) not show any metadata for webp. And it only shows the encoder version for webm. Commons will not show the f-number for a PNG, even if it is in the metadata. You can still retrieve all metadata from the API. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 07:32, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
  • Yann - I'll try to do some research. I'll come back if I have more questions as I already do. I need to go out to do something and I'll come back to it this afternoon. I'm getting a little confused here. AdamDaleyAUS (talk) 23:35, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
  • Yann; C.Suthorn - I have saved an image from .RAW to .JPG. The only editing that I've done is the default shadows value in PhotoShop v24.7 at 35%. If I attempt to slightly straighten the image it will ask me to save the image in other formats not including .JPG. I do not know why it won't let me save in .JPG after a slight straightening. AdamDaleyAUS (talk) 01:22, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
I do not know, why you transcode from RAW to JPG (a format for publishing finished fotoes). Especially as AFAIK Photoshop can import RAW (otherwise you could transcode from RAW to TIFF, PNG or lossless WEBP). Photoshop is a commercial software, you may have more luck with questions about Photoshop at a forum for commercial software. Instead of Photoshop you can use Gimp. But I do assume (and it is only an assumption) that Photoshop can only save to the Photoshop format and if your finished photo needs to be another format, you cannot save it, but need to export it to a format for finished fotos (for example jpeg, but other formats may be a better choice). @V8goldcoast: No. You must credit each author of the images you use with at least (for example) "Author - CC-BY-SA-4.0", and eventually a link to the source. Do not use capitals, it is like shouting. Yann (talk) 20:51, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
Specifically:
  • Commons is not Wikipedia. And there are about 200 wikipedias, each in a different language.
  • Neither Commons nor Wikipedia nor the Wikimedia Foundation owns the rights to any of the images here (there are a probably handful of exceptions for some of their own logos, etc.). The rights are owned by third parties, some of them contributors, some not. Copyrighted images are here on the basis of being licensed, and to reuse them you also have to conform to the terms of the license for each specific image, which will vary from image to image, and are always stated on the respective file page. - Jmabel ! talk 21:55, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
@V8goldcoast every media available at commons has a description page (the page here on commons you see, if you click on an image at wikipedia. Possibly you get the MediaViewer first, in that case click von "details"). This description page explains the conditions you have to meet to use the media. In many cases the image is in the public domain (because of old age or being a work of the US government, etc). In such case you do not need to attribute it at all, but as Jmabel explained you must not attribute it to wikipedia or commons. Commons is the source only. In other cases the media is not in the public domain. Then you must make a correct attriution as explained on the individual description page. Ca. 40 million images come with a creative commons license. In that case yout have to follow the conditions of the chosen license (for example cc-by-2.5 or cc-by-sa-4.0). Other image may come with an art libre or beer license (you are free to donate a beer to the author in that case). C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 07:20, 13 August 2023 (UTC)

Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh photograph

I just recently uploaded a photo here, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SophieofEdinburgh2023RoyalAscot.jpg and used the pending copyright status as I had uploaded it after sending an email to Chris Jackson, the copyright holder. I understand that it is going under criteria for deletion, yet I put a notice not to use it in the description. In any other case, I would simply request the file for deletion in the awake of a sudden email saying that Jackson wouldn't like it to have a CC license, but I am following the instruction(s): Once you have received a written/e-mail confirmation granting permission you should:
1. If the material is not already on Commons or Wikipedia: Upload relevant images, sound recordings or videos to Commons. If you don't have a Commons account, see Commons:First steps for more help. If for text, upload to Wikipedia. (see here)
It is saying if the material is not already uploaded, to upload such image. Yet one may say, "once you receive confirmation", but it says "if it is not already uploaded". I find this an ambiguous term, considering the notions that it can be uploaded prior to the confirmation, or after.
Anyways, I am not too worried about this because I am going on vacation tomorrow and there is a chance that Jackson may not grant the appropriate copyright. Nevertheless, I would like an administrator to remove such templates of deletion in preparation for if Jackson grants permission and copyright status.
That is all,
BillClinternet (talk) 22:17, 13 August 2023 (UTC)

BillClinternet: Because this is a Getty Images photo, I highly doubt you will be given an image release permission we accept. You don't need to worry about it being deleted before their permission arrives, because deleted images are restored once a suitable permission and copyright licence are received and they will be added at that time. Ww2censor (talk) 00:04, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
How would I go about restoring it? Simply re-uploading the photo to commons or having an administrator re-store it?
Thanks,

License to use copyrighted image in Wikimedia Commons

I have written permission from a copyright holder to use "Fauntleroy memorial plaque.jpg", which appears at https://www.cornelius-tiebout-engravings.org/part_12.html. What steps are needed to satisfy Wikimedia Commons requirements so that the image will stay there? Do I need to have the copyright holder (the archives at University of Southern Indiana) submit a digital form? Clark Kimberling (talk) 16:34, 14 August 2023 (UTC)

First, there are two potential copyrights here: the copyright of the plaque and the copyright of the photo. Are you saying that both of these things are copyrighted, and that both copyrights are held by University of Southern Indiana? And, if so, how do they come to own these copyrights? (Sorry, but before we say how permissions should be communicated, first we need to understand what rights are to be licensed by whom.) - Jmabel ! talk 20:26, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
The plaque was erected [publihsed] in 1937, so according to the table in Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United States, and unless there is a hidden copyright notice (maybe on the side of the plaque), the plaque itself is out of copyright. If this is the case, you need only worry about the copyright of photograph itself. Martinvl (talk) 20:38, 15 August 2023 (UTC)

Cropping a commons image to get one person for a wikipedia article

I would like to use the image of Dick Wagner in this photo https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gay_Pride_parade_1991,_Madison,_Wisconsin_(04).jpg for an article about Dick and crop out the (now Senator and Congressman) Baldwin and Pocan - is the easiest way to do this to just download the image, crop it, and reupload it to the commons as a new file and point back at the original for the "source", or is there a better way to reuse existing commons images that keeps more metadata and lineage connected? Thanks! 22:57, 15 August 2023 (UTC) Erik s paulson (talk) 22:57, 15 August 2023 (UTC)

Erik s paulson: Use the CropTool that can be activated in your commons Preferences, under Gadgets. The CropTool will then appears in the left side of your screen. It saves everyone a lot of time because it transfers all the correct and appropriate information into the cropped image, such as source, license, author, etc. It even leaves a backlink to the original and visa versa so long as the original has been positively reviewed. That way all the proper information is there and does not need to be manually reviewed by volunteers. If you are just cropping a small bit of the image like a frame you can decide to overwrite the original image but for more major crops you should upload the copped version as a separate new image and not overwrite the existing file, but you have a choice. I hope you can see how everyone can save time and frustration by using CropTool. Good luck. Ww2censor (talk) 23:53, 15 August 2023 (UTC)

Uploaded image appearing broken

Hi there, I'm trying to upload an image (File:Ada_Health_Symptom_Checker_conceptual_overview.png) which is a piece of work I made and then published at a medical journal that uses Creative Commons licensing (https://humanfactors.jmir.org/2020/3/e19713/). It looks like it uploaded correctly but when I try to use on Wikipedia I get a broken image icon instead of a thumbnail. However if I click on the filename it displays properly, and I can download it and it looks just fine. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

JMIR Footer: This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/), which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work, first published in JMIR Human Factors, is properly cited. The complete bibliographic information, a link to the original publication on http://humanfactors.jmir.org, as well as this copyright and license information must be included. PaulWicks (talk) 14:49, 10 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi, Clicking some of the thumbnails gives the Wikimedia servers error messge: "Error: 429, Too Many Requests at Thu, 10 Aug 2023...". It may be a temporary problem. You can probably wait to see if it gets fixed later today. However, in the meantime, please fix the description page by crediting the real authors and source and using the same license as the source. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:05, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
Thanks - I will check again tomorrow. I added the other authors (I'm one of them) and license info to the Summary. PaulWicks (talk) 15:18, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
@PaulWicks: I had missed the fact that your Wikimedia username is identical to the name of one of the authors of the article, which explains your "own work" statement. In theory, as the author, you can use different licences at different places. But it can be confusing. On the JMIRHF copy, you used a license "BY". On the Commons copy, you used a license "BY-SA". -- Asclepias (talk) 16:03, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
That was an oops on my part, now rectified. I'm still getting a broken thumbnail however (replicated on multiple browsers). Can you (or anyone else?) let me know if I've done something wrong or whether the file needs adjusting in some way? Thanks! PaulWicks (talk) 07:19, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
I left a note at Commons:Village pump/Technical#File:Ada Health Symptom Checker conceptual overview.png pointing here. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:05, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
The thumbnails are still broken, as far as I can tell, and there has been no reply yet at C:VP/Technical. At this point, maybe someone can just reupload the file and see if that works. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:58, 15 August 2023 (UTC)

Transfer from Geograph

I've been trying to use https://geograph2commons.toolforge.org/ to transfer an image (cc-by-sa) from Geograph nothing happens and looking at the archives I see this tool hasn't worked for some years. Can it be taken down to stop others wasting their time and is there an alternative? Shantavira (talk) 15:12, 10 August 2023 (UTC)

@Shantavira: That seems like an old problem with no answer on meta. Perhaps you can try asking at Commons:Village pump/Technical. (Pinging Multichill, who might have suggestions.) -- Asclepias (talk) 15:25, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
@Asclepias and Shantavira: https://geograph2commons.toolforge.org/ is maintained by User:Magnus Manske, not by me. Try contacting him. Multichill (talk) 08:17, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
@Shantavira: A good alternative is to follow the "reuse" or "Licensing" link from the photo page on Geograph, scroll to the bottom, and click "directly upload this image to Wikimedia Commons". This will automatically fill in Special:Upload with the same details that geograph2commons would have used, but also allow you to choose the filename, add categories, and make any required changes to the description. If there are any remaining places (on Commons or elsewhere) that recommend geograph2commons, those should be removed. The Toolforge Abandoned Tool policy seems like it should allow anyone to take over the tool and replace it with an explanation of the new mechanism. Maybe I should try that. --bjh21 (talk) 16:34, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
@Shantavira: Note that I've assumed that by "Geograph" you mean "Geograph Britain and Ireland". I don't know if any other Geograph sites have incorporated my changes to the "reuse" page. --bjh21 (talk) 16:39, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

Can I publish a scan of a rare book written by my great-grandfather over one hundred years ago?

I have in my possession a book in Hebrew, written by my great-grandfather in 1907. It is called the Jubilee book of Rishon LeZion. it is frail, and before I scan it I would like to know if I can publish the book on Wikimedia, and what format is preferred (PDF, jpeg...) Accelerator-physicist (talk) 14:46, 14 August 2023 (UTC)

@Accelerator-physicist: Hi, For a book, the preferred format is usually PDF. When did your great-grandfather died? Where was the book first published? We need to know this to decide on the license. Yann (talk) 14:52, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
Also (may be relevant depending on the answers to the other questions): are you the heir to you great-grandfather's intellectual property? - Jmabel ! talk 15:07, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
In addition we also need ot know your great-grandfather's citizenship and place of residence in 1907. These might also be of interest. In answer to your question "Can I publish the book on WIkimedia?", I don't think that you can publish the whole book on WIkimedia - you can publish a transcript in Wikibooks (assuming that there are no copyright restrictions). Finally, if the book is frail, I suggest that you go to a university library and ask them for advice - they will probably suggest that you get it professionally microfilmed and you can then publish it in any form you like. Martinvl (talk) 15:21, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
It is exceedingly unlikely that the citizenship or place of residence will matter. The book is public domain in the US, and pretty much everywhere if the author died by 1952, besides Columbia, Guatemala, and Mexico and a couple other small places; even then, if he died by 1922 it will be fine.--Prosfilaes (talk) 19:44, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
Hi folks, thanks for your help.
My Great-grandfather died in 1924, in the town of Rishon LeZion, which was then in the Palestine region of the Ottoman Empire, so he was either a citizen of that empire and/or of his native country, Poland. I guess I am heir to his intellectual property, along with (guess) about a hundred equally distant heirs, although many of these probably passed.
I will look at Wikibooks. It is not so frail that I cannot scan it to PDF, it is just that the binding will not survive the exercise, but then a digital medium is worth it. Special thanks to Prosfilaes, this answers my question - so the book is in the public domain, for me the US counts.
Much appreciated! Accelerator-physicist (talk) 23:52, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
Wikisource, not Wikibooks, is the place for reproducing old books; Wikibooks is for new original works. What counts for Commons is the US and its source country, but fortunately Israel is life+50, and I can't think of any country where it would still be under copyright so it is fine to upload as a public domain work.--Prosfilaes (talk) 16:28, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
You can upload it to the Internet Archive (archive.org) and I recommend that you do, as that's one of the great Internet libraries and should preserve the copy, and probably do a better job about making it available to those looking for it than Wikimedia will. You can upload a PDF to Commons, and transcribe it on the Hebrew Wikisource.--Prosfilaes (talk) 19:44, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
Again, superb advice - many thanks! Accelerator-physicist (talk) 23:55, 15 August 2023 (UTC)

Original editable files

Greetings. Is there any guidance about how best to make available the original media files, more easily editable than the final images? For example, I have made an animation in powerpoint and am exporting an animated GIF (here's the related discussion: File talk:AngularFrequency.gif). I've tried exporting the PPTX file in SVG format, but it creates a separate file for each slide, so not so easily modifiable. Is there a recommended companion open-access repository for media formats not accepted at Wiki Commons, where I could upload the original editable file? I'm considering using figshare.com or similar sites. Thanks! Fgnievinski (talk) 22:15, 15 August 2023 (UTC)

Here's an example of PPT posted to FigShare (for a GIF posted on Wiki Commons): https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.23962731 Fgnievinski (talk) 19:33, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

Using unpublished (?) images

Hello. I will soon be writing a Wikipedia article on some sculptures in a local church. It would be nice to illustrate the article with some pictures of the sculptures. I'm thinking maybe I could take some pictures myself and upload those, but since the sculptures were restored circa 2005, the church might have more professional photos of the sculptures after their restoration. Assuming the church has the pictures, can I ask for permission the usual way, the same as asking for the release of copyright restrictions for an image found on a website? Thank you, Curiocurio (talk) 02:40, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

  • @Curiocurio: let's start out by working out whether the sculptures themselves are still copyrighted. What country is this, when do the sculptures date from, and if they are any later than 1903, do you know who sculpted them and (ideally) when that person died? - Jmabel ! talk 02:49, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
If the 1949 sculptures by Woods (1919-2014), you can probably upload at least one photo to en.wikipedia as fair use. Not to Commons. The fair use being of the work of the sculptor, but the work of the photographer must be freely licensed. The permission to obtain from the photographer can be as usual. -- Asclepias (talk) 03:10, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
Thank you to both! I didn't think of fair use. Curiocurio (talk) 12:07, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

Using tracings(?) of structural artwork

A bit of a niche case. I'm trying to make a page regarding the Arkville Maze, though the maze itself is private and most photos of it are either satellite/drone photography or otherwise not free access.

In a bit of desperation, I took a satellite image of the maze and traced over it in a photo editing software in order to at least convey the relative size and design of the art instillation. Is this permissible for upload? It would definitely be tough if what is essentially an art piece was unable to have any sort of visual representation attached in the article. Thanks! A MINOTAUR (talk) 03:23, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

@A MINOTAUR: seems to me it's going to be a derivative work no matter what you do. Probably acceptable within the English-language Wikipedia as fair use if uploaded there for use in a specific article, but probably not acceptable for Commons. But it is a weird case, and someone else may see an angle I'm missing. You might want to take the question to Commons:Village pump/Copyright where there is usually more expertise on this sort of thing. - Jmabel ! talk 06:59, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for the response, I'll be sure to take it over there! A MINOTAUR (talk) 12:11, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

Uploading additional information and photo to the person page

Hello, I tried to upload additional information to the person page. But so far it has not been viewed. What do I have to do to get these amendments approved? I also uploaded some photos from the person's personal archive to this page, but I got a message about copyright infringement. What kind of license do I have to provide? What format should it be in? I would be very grateful for an answer! Since I am a new user of Wikipedia and it is difficult to understand the algorithm of my actions. Yuliia Gonchar (talk) 08:19, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

@Yuliia Gonchar: I can't make any sense of this.
  1. This isn't Wikipedia, it's Wikimedia Commons, a media repository. Run by the same foundation, but basically in most respects a separate project.
  2. No idea what you mean by "the person page", could you link?
  3. "has not been viewed": how would you know whether a page has been viewed?
  4. get these amendments approved: what are you trying to "amend"? Rules of some sort? or are you just talking about editing some article, file description, etc.? Normally such changes take effect immediately, are you saying you edited something and your edit seems not to have worked? Again, a link would be helpful.
  5. I'm guessing you tried to do a cross-wiki upload of some image from Wikipedia in some language to Commons, probably using the Upload Wizard on that Wikipedia. But maybe not. Again, without specifics, this is going to be hard to sort out.
  6. Also, if there is some language where you can express yourself more clearly than in English, please use it. There are plenty of people here who understand pretty much any language you are likely to use (including getting some help from Google Translate). The clearer and more specific you can be, the more likely someone can help you. - Jmabel ! talk 20:36, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

I want to add video but can not as the file is in MP4 after keeping it in Whatsapp on my Desktop

What I can see there are various videos on Wikimedia Commons. For example: Category:Videos of Darya Dugina. I would love add as public domain my few seconds video of Basilica Fatima day before WYD but I can not due to fact the file is in MP4 after keeping it in Whatsapp on my Desktop. Wgat can I do techically? Is this common issue? Are there any videotutorials or extremally detalic instructions how can I hange it from mp4 to something other where will be 200% guerantee to file be upload on commons successfully? Best regards Dawid2009 (talk) 10:31, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

In most cases a media file taken from WhatsApp cannot be uploaded to Commons as every file at Commons needs to have a free license. Files from WhatsApp do not have such a license unless the copyright owner issues a free license in a way that can be proved through VRT. If you have a video that you made yourself (directed the lense of a video camera on the subject than pressed the record button) or that is public domain (because it was taken 150 years ago or made by the US government) than you can upload it in the webm format (and best with a VP9 encoding). If the video is any other format you need to transcode to webm (for example with ffmpeg). You can also use the video2commons tool, that will accept mp4 and mov videos, transcode to webm and upload to commons. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 11:26, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

Unsure whether I can upload an image like this

Hi. I'd like to upload an image to an article about a living person (I have previously attempted to upload two photos of them via the Upload Wizard, but eventually realised that I couldn't just freely use those specific images due to copyright rules and such), and have found an image from one of their social media accounts. It seems like a normal photo, simply one of them smiling and posing in front of a wall. However, I'm not sure if it can be accepted because it isn't known who actually took the photo. I thought that I could use it as it was shared on their own public social media account, and the date of when it was uploaded is clear, but I'm not sure if there's something else I should do/be cautious about before doing anything.

This specific article is probably the one I've contributed to the most in my not-so-long time editing on Wikipedia and for a while I felt that there was something missing (i.e an image). I have grown a little frustrated at times trying to upload a decent image, only to find out that I'm doing something wrong every single time (that's my fault though, I won't deny that).

Anyway, my point is: I would just like to know whether an image like the one I described is fine to upload, or if I should avoid uploading it all together. If it isn't fine, then I probably won't attempt to do it again.

Thanks for your help. Usernameisoccupiedtoo (talk) 20:21, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

No, it cannot be used. By default, copyright is owned by the photographer. (Some countries do allow it to be reassigned, but that typically requires a written document or electronic equivalent.) Only the copyright-holder can issue a license. This is just like no one but you can give someone permission to borrow your car. - Jmabel ! talk 20:40, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

How to add multiple categories to an image (step-by-step)

I'm sure I'm being obtuse, but I haven't the foggiest idea of how to add categories to my uploaded images.

If I look at some of my uploads, I get a message that says they need categories. But I'm not sure where to edit/insert the categories.

I also activated the "hotcat" gadget, but for the life of me, I can't find added functionality for adding categories (and I have javascript enabled). I don't see anything that looks like the screenshots shown in the hotcat tutorial. I even signed in via a different browser and still can't find hotcat functionality.

OOF.

Thanks for any guidance. Pdanese (talk) 11:00, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

There is a plus sign at the right of all categories at the bottom, which allows you to add a new category. Or, if you want to add multiple categories, you can use the plus/plus sign at the left. You should add categories and then save the edit. Ruslik (talk) 19:59, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
Thank you. Pdanese (talk) 12:44, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
Or you can skip hot-cat and just edit the wikitext. Look at the bottom of the wikitext of pretty much any existing, categorized photo: the syntax for categories is pretty simple, you'll probably understand it in about 10 seconds. - Jmabel ! talk 20:38, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
Thanks. Should have done that from the start. Much appreciated! Pdanese (talk) 12:44, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

So I am wondering if its possible to upload these cannons in the Bangladesh History Museum as photos to Wikipedia commons. I'm not sure if they would fall under copyright, or something. And I am a bit confused on how to proceed, so I am asking if it is possible that uploading something like this is possible? The images are from Pashtun blogspot, which in turn is from a book. Move request for a revision

I wish to request renaming my recompressed, 135 bytes smaller but identical image File:Wikipedia_Logo_as_ASCII_Art_recompress.png to a revision of File:Wikipedia_Logo_as_ASCII_Art.png
I made the image 1-bit grayscale (inverted for better compression), then used zopflipng brute-force mode to use the filter mode it finds best for the image, compressed the raw IDAT contents further with regular zopfli (it seems to provide better zlib compression compared to zopflipng), switched the image to indexed (still 1-bit), added PLTE[(white, hidden by tRNS), black] and tRNS to make the first palette entry fully transparent like in the original. :) Mossymountain (talk) 14:14, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

Commons users

Which is the category that should contain selportraits of Commons users? Pierpao.lo (listening) 09:47, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

Most user self-portraits are not in a category for example this picture is from a user with only one contribution and the name cannot be found in Wikidata. Many of these photos are for self-promotion only. For example, if I want to see Pierpao's self-portrait, I go to the user page and find nothing. Searching does not make much sense, because then you get to see all the user's contributions. If you do find a self-portrait, you still don't know what the user's real name is. There is the Category:Selfies, but it is not easy to find the info there. What exactly is the purpose of your question? Wouter (talk) 19:05, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

Correcting mis-attributed & mis-licensed files

File:Victoria Park Soccer Club 1933.jpg and File:WilliamDrain.jpg were uploaded as "own work" under a CC license, which was obviously incorrect. I've located the original source and determined that the copyright has lapsed, and was able to update the summary and licensing sections accordingly. However, I couldn't change the structured data for some reason. Also, would appreciate if someone with more experience can check for anything else I might have missed. Attribution for Kurapaty photo

Hi, I'm interested in using the photo of a 1989 meeting in Kurapaty, Belarus, but don't see what attribution I should use. All I see is that the photo was taken by Valer Pałściuk. It says I must provide a link to the license, but I don't see a license. Please help with the attribution? and thanks ....The photo is at: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kurapaty_1989_meeting.jpg Zeitung33+ (talk) 22:12, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

What it means is that you may choose any licence you want among the five licensing options offered on the description page of that photo. I think most people would avoid the GNU FDL license, but IMO any of the four Creative Commons licenses can be fine enough. Ideally, you should read all licenses and decide yourself which license you prefer. (It may depend in part where and how you want to use the image. Consider the differences between the versions. For example, the license CC BY-SA 1.0 is the only version that includes a warranty by which the licensor warrants that he had the right to issue the license and that the image does not infringe any copyright or other law. But most people probably don't care much about that.) -- Asclepias (talk) 14:05, 18 August 2023 (UTC)

Wrong authors of paintings

How can I change the author of a painting in a file edited like this? File:Hans Holbein - Terminus, the Device of Erasmus - 1971.166 - Cleveland Museum of Art.tiff The real author would be Hans Holbein the Younger as it is mentioned in the source and not Hans Holbein the Elder.

In that rather well known File:Venus and Amor, by Hans Holbein the Younger.jpg of allegedly Hans Holbein the Younger the actual author would be the Venus painter (or Venusmaler in German) as it is also mentioned in the source.

How can I change this? I tried, but was not able to.Paradise Chronicle (talk) 02:16, 18 August 2023 (UTC)

Copyright question

I am unclear on the copyright status of File:ML @ Blue Note by Felicity Hall.jpg. The filename says the photographer (copyright owner) is "Felicity Hall" – a tour manager per [8] [9]. The Commons file description says the author (copyright owner) is the uploader User:RoyalEMV. There is no indication that the uploader is "Felicity Hall". The uploader's only other upload was deleted because of copyright violation, see [10] [11]. I don't have much experience on copyright, I appreciate input or advice to clarify this. • If it is "fair use", then it does not belong on Commons. Commons does not accept images on a "fair use" basis.
  • Most images generated by AI are in the public domain, though. Why would "fair use" even arise as an issue?
  • On the other hand: why is this image in scope for Commons? I see no reason it should be.

I inherited these photos from a family friend who passed away and has no surviving relatives. He didn’t have any children, and he wanted me to have them. He had previously inherited them from his uncle. Pinkietastic (talk) 20:26, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
  • although it should be noted that these are technically pictures I took on my phone of the pictures in the photo album that I was given - I technically got it a few weeks before he died but I inherited all of his stuff after that.
Pinkietastic (talk) 20:28, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
I apologize for any confusion - I didn’t really know what to say other than “own work” since I didn’t know if it would let me put them in the public domain if I said they weren’t - because I do own them, and it seems like a crying shame to rob the world of the knowledge that they would give since all of the other people who could have inherited the copyright are dead. Pinkietastic (talk) 20:31, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
In copyright terms, an accurate, non-creative reproduction of a 2-dimensional work doesn't create a new copyright (It's slightly more complicated in the UK, but not in a way that makes any difference in this case). So an accurate photo or scan of a photo doesn't change whose work it is, etc.
Photos should almost always be attributed to the actual photographer.
If you have inherited the relevant intellectual property rights, then you can license these with {{Cc-zero-heirs}}. You might also want to use COM:VRT to have a correspondence on record clarifying how you come to own these copyrights.
VFC is quite a good tool to make mass changes. Once you set it up through your preferences, you can launch it on Special:ListFiles/Pinkietastic to act on all the photos you've uploaded.
Once all that's sorted out, hit me up about getting going on categorization.
I hope that helps. - Jmabel ! talk 22:46, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
Thanks man! I’ll definitely look into that and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can! Pinkietastic (talk) 01:35, 22 August 2023 (UTC)

Previously when I was browsing (the English) Wikipedia I noticed that out of all of the sound clips in en:Études (Chopin), only his "Ocean" etude opens a separate popup instead of playing the audio outright. I eventually figured out this was because someone had previously added Spanish captions to what is a completely wordless piece, containing the name of the work and "Music plays". However, the name of the work is directly in the filename (so there is no need to also state it in a caption), and even more embarrassingly, the captions weren't even Spanish to begin with. I thought that blanking the page would revert the WP audio to just playing the audio outright like every other file on that page, but it still doesn't seem to; would deleting that page help? If so, could someone please do that for me, given I obviously don't have an account? Thanks. 2603:8001:4542:28FB:B593:4B67:C7AA:C849 17:56, 19 August 2023 (UTC)

There should be captions: how would a deaf person know that it's only instrumental music otherwise? —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:29, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
1. The filename itself states the audio is of an etude, which is defined as an "instrumental musical composition".
2. Even beyond that, a quick glance through the file usage shows that almost every single invocation of it is in the context of Chopin's Etudes (which make clear they are piano compositions) or an article about piano itself. (This also means that even if a deaf user's coming across the file from Commons itself, the file usage page is littered with references to pianos.)
3. Even beyond that, I think a better way to tell deaf users it's piano music without inconveniencing everyone else would be to maybe explain that in the file description, such as what I did here. 2603:8001:4542:28FB:B593:4B67:C7AA:C849 19:10, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
File descriptions do not show up on media embeds and no one is "inconvenienced" by making files accessible. Accessibility features like captions and alternative text are not optional. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:14, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
Then for the sake of standardization, it might be worthwhile to add captions to Chopin's 26 other etudes on the page I came from, just so we don't have 26 audio files that immediately play when pressed on mobile, and then one that goes through a two-click popup to a seemingly-blank screen. (And maybe you should set it so the "Spanish captions" are actually, well, Spanish.) 2603:8001:4542:28FB:B593:4B67:C7AA:C849 19:39, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
They should all have captions and the Spanish caption is already in Spanish: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=TimedText:Frederic_Chopin_-_etude_no._12_in_c_minor,_op._25.ogg.es.srt&diff=prev&oldid=794484428Justin (koavf)TCM 19:43, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
@Koavf You have a cornucopia of babel boxes on your user page, but none of them contain any indication that you are working on, interested in, or dependent on accessibility techniques. Yet you argue here that it makes sense, indeed is necessary, to subtitle a very specific audio file, the text "música sin canto" for 3 minutes and 5 seconds (in an audio of 3 minutes and 15 seconds duration). I think this is trolling. If subtitles in a pure audio file should really be the most sensible way to make Wikipedia more accessible, then the subtitles of this etude would at least include a mention of the characteristics of this etude and basically something like a commentary in a directors cut: "Here the composer lets the bass violins warble to then abruptly let the saxophones play a counterpoint...". C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 11:54, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
It is in no way "trolling" to add accessibility features to files, no matter which userboxes I have. Your comment is completely off-base nonsense. If you think that explaining that bass violins are warbling is more useful to a deaf person then you are free to edit the captions, but note that I have never seen any closed captions like that in my life. What is far more common is something like "Dramatic music" or "no sound" when sound might be expected. Have you ever seen any closed captions on any piece of media that read anything like "Here the composer lets the bass violins warble to then abruptly let the saxophones play a counterpoint..."? Are there any guidelines that suggest this is best practice? —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:36, 20 August 2023 (UTC)

Are all of these icons and these logos fine as well? The items for the radio stations already exist on Wikidata so i can use them there. @Jmabel: --Trade (talk) 04:18, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
    • Of "class emblems", almost none. Most of those involve quite a bit of copyrightable design. The medic and sniper ones would be fine, and a couple of others (pyro, for example) might just squeak by because of PD "prior art". The radio stations are mostly very close to the line. I'd say in order from clearest "yes" to clearest "no": RISE FM, MSX FM, Head Radio (I personally would draw the line here), KJAH Radio, Double Clef FM, Game Radio FM, (I think after this is a clear "no") Flash Back 95.6, MPlay3, Lips 106, Chatterbox FM. - Jmabel ! talk 18:47, 21 August 2023 (UTC)

Reverse image search on a specific website

Let's assume that we have an image that was once hosted on a website. The admin has removed it from the page, but the file is still available on that website if we try the URL. Considering that we have the file to do reverse image search, is there any chance that we can find the URL using a tool? That's the case with some valuable freely-licensed files that we can host on Commons, but we cannot find on the original source. Thanks, HeminKurdistan (talk) 16:45, 21 August 2023 (UTC)

Special:Watchlist displays no watched pages

Hi, new and primarily mobile user here. I marked a number of pages for my watchlist, but when I navigate to the list, it tells me I have no pages in my watchlist. If I click on the edit log, it clearly shows edits to pages on my watchlist. Is there another page I can use to see my watchlist?

My mobile specs: Samsung Galaxy S22, Android v13 One UI v5.1, Firefox Android app. Thanks! Pingnova (talk) 23:42, 21 August 2023 (UTC)

Not sure what you mean. You need to click on the star button so the star turns black so article are included in the watchlist.Paradise Chronicle (talk) 08:30, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
Yes, I've done that. When I navigate to a page I have watchlisted, the star is filled in/blue. I clicked the star on a few pages to unwatch and watch again and I still see nothing on my watchlist. The view/edit watchlist page is empty and tells me I have nothing on my watchlist. But when I look at the list of edits made to watched pages, I can see edits made to the pages that should display on my watchlist. I can only see which pages I have watchlisted by combing through those that have been recently edited. Pingnova (talk) 17:47, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
Here is an Imgur page with screenshots showing a watched page with the star filled in, the related edits watchlist page, and the view watchlist page which displays a message telling me I am watching no pages. https://imgur.com/a/usjqpfu Pingnova (talk) 18:02, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
That is strange indeed. You can post your question to Commons:Village pump/Technical and see if someone can answer there. I don't use the mobile interface and can't help with it. But do you have the option to "edit raw watchlist" on the mobile interface? (It doesn't seem to be on your images.) If so, maybe you can add manually a page or two directly there and see if it remains there and if it then shows in the "view and edit watchlist" option. I know that's not a solution, but as an experiment it might help to identify the problem. In the non-mobile interface, it takes the user to the page https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:EditWatchlist/raw In the mobile interface, I don't know if there is a page https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:EditWatchlist/raw ? Also, if you can add pages with the non-mobile interface, it could help determine if the problem is with the mobile interface. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:29, 22 August 2023 (UTC)

I want to delete an old photo of a person and replace it with a more current photo

I want to replace a photo of someone I know who has passed away and has a wikipedia page with a more current photo of them that is more recognizable. How do I do that? BlueFeltPen (talk) 22:28, 22 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi BlueFeltPen. There are multiple layers to your question so answering it is a bit more complicated then it seems. First of all, Commons only hosts content that is either no longer or never was eligible for copyright protection or is protected by copyright but has been released under a license by its copyright holder deemed OK for Commons. With respect to photos, they are typically considered to be protected by copyright and generally it's the person taking the photo who is considered to be the copyright holder. So, if you can provide more information about the photo you want to use, it will probably be easier for someone to help you. Perhaps answering the following questions will help others give you a more specific answer. Did you take the photo yourself? Have you previously published the photo somewhere online or in some print publication if you did take it? Where did you find the photo if you didn't take it yourself? Is it something you found on some website or in some print publication? -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:48, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply. I've had the photo for a long time, it was given to me by the person who is since deceased. I believe he'd be happy to have his out of date photo replaced with something recognizable and clearer. Is it possible to add it as a second photo and leave the first one there also, at the least? Or do I have to find a photo somewhere that I can get permission to use? There are many of him online, I just wanted to use one that was personally given to me by him that I know he liked. BlueFeltPen (talk) 17:36, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
Also, there is no reason here to delete the old photo. History is of just as much interest here as the present. - Jmabel ! talk 01:53, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
I appreciate your perspective but in this case this is a person of some renown and when their wiki page was first created whoever created it didn't have a good picture of them. The person attributed as having posted the photo is no longer on Wikipedia and there is no way to contact them that I can find. I would like to post a more recognizable photo that is also clearer. thank you for your response though. BlueFeltPen (talk) 17:31, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
@BlueFeltPen: Commons is an archive. We don't delete old photos just because someone has a different photo they prefer. It may not be the photo that should be on the Wikipedia article, but that doesn't mean it will be deleted from Commons.
"it was given to me by the person who is since deceased": was that person the photographer? If so, would it be possible to get permission from their heir(s)? You don't say what country this is about, but in most countries, copyright persists for 70 years after the death of the author (for a photo, the photographer). Yes, we absolutely need permission. Commons only hosts files that are either in the public domain or free-licensed.
If you do know the heir, see COM:VRT for what they'd need to do. - Jmabel ! talk 19:59, 23 August 2023 (UTC)

"Families have expressly requested that two photos be removed..."

Hello all.

I've been approached at my WP-talkpage [12] about 2 pictures at Familial dysautonomia and several other language WP:s, File:Riley day.jpg and File:Kyphoscoliosis hereditary sensory autonomic neuropathy III.jpg.

Afaict, the licensing is ok. But: is there, per the request, a case for deleting these pictures from Commons per COM:BLP? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:19, 23 August 2023 (UTC)

Images related to medical conditions raise privacy and ethics concerns, even when they are sourced to peer-reviewed journals. Do we have a hard-line policy about showing images of medical conditions? @Doc James: may be able to comment from a more informed perspective...
ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 13:19, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
Obviously, a photo taken during a medical examination is not taken in a public place and requires consent. In the present case, consent was given. See the section "acknowlwdgements" in the source article [13],[14]: "The authors are grateful to the families for their cooperation. Written consent for publication was obtained from the patient or their relative." The article was published in 2007. The photos in the two files are undated but from the look they might be from much earlier, likely before 2000. The latest picture of the person on those files is when she was 19. When consent was given, the pictured person was adult, unless she was dead, which unfortunately is possible, in which case the consent would have been given by a relative. I suppose that one might argue if the person who consented to publication consented to publication with a free license. That would be a valid question and it could be asked to the authors of the source article. If the request for deletion had come from the pictured person or from her surviving relatives, I think Commons should be open to the possibility of a deletion. However, from the wording of the request on the page en:User talk:Gråbergs Gråa Sång#Question from Kincsk (14:49, 22 August 2023), it sounds like the request is made by some unrelated person claiming that unidentified "families" requested the removal of the two images from the Wikipedia article. That vague wording is suggestive that it has nothing to do with the family of the pictured person. The request does not mention a deletion from Commons. The editorial decision about what to do with the Wikipedia article is for the editors of Wikipedia, not for Commons. But IMHO that some unrelated people take issue with medical illustrations is not a reason to remove those illustrations from an article. The files are in use and they are useful to the understanding of the article. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:18, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
I quite agree with Asclepias. I suggest that a request by sent to VRT with detailed about who requests the deletion. Then a deletion request can be started without mentioning personal details. Yann (talk) 15:34, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
Without a view on a possible deletion: "Consent was given". I assume that the persons depicted gave their consent to the publication in a professional journal in 2007 (Wikipedia had been around for 6 years, Facebook for 3 years, Twitter for 1 year, Mastodon did not yet exist). They may not have even been aware that this journal would also be available on the Internet, that lay people can borrow it via interlibrary loan from any library, that it will become searchable via image search engines, and that BigData ML algorithms will use it as learning data for generating images. To speak here of a valid Consent for Commons is not necessarily insightful for all people. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 16:31, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
That is a valid concern, although it's more about changing the general policy. Where to draw a line for consistency? Should the policy refuse all consents given before a certain year, e.g. 2020? And/or refuse all consents given for a first publication in paper or in a scientific publication? Or never accept any consent at all, because people cannot know what might be possible in the future? Those are legitimate questions for a general discussion of policy. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:07, 23 August 2023 (UTC)

ATTN: User:Kincsk: you will want to write to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, where this can be further sorted out by confidential correspondence. - Jmabel ! talk 16:50, 23 August 2023 (UTC)

Probably not to do with permissions-commons. They want to remove images from a Wikipedia article [15] because they're an organization who apparently believes that they have authority to approve the contents of that article. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:16, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
@Asclepias: they would presumably like the image removed from Commons as well, and that removes it from Wikipedia. If the affected family writes to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, I would assume they would get a courtesy deletion on a personality rights basis. Do you think not? - Jmabel ! talk 20:03, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
Ok, if you believe that there's more than a 1% chance that this request can have anything to do with the actual family, who never manifested a problem with those photos in the 15 years they've been on Commons and Wikipedia. But if not, I'm not much for the idea that this organization, who just seems to think it's entitled to supervise Wikipedia articles, would start making requests by email to delete Commons files. A first step could be to use the talk page of the article and, in the unlikely event that it at least claims that the family is involved, then they could contact Commons. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:41, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
@Asclepias: I agree that if the request just comes from the organization, they don't really have any "standing" here. - Jmabel ! talk 22:05, 23 August 2023 (UTC)

What do you mean? Do you want to write an article in the english Wikipedia and use an image that is used in another language wikipedia already? In that case you can do that, if the image is on commons. If the image is not on commons it is probably fair use and you have to check if it is fair use in the english wikipedia also. Or do you want to create an article outside of wikipedia and use an image from commons. You can do that, but you must obey the license of the image. It is described at the description page of the image and there is no need to ask (here or anywhere else). Or are you asking, if you are allowed to do something that is forbidden? Hi, I am not sure if this works also for an IP, but if you create an account in the English Wikipedia there is a dropdown menu where you can scroll down to translations. Click on it, select the languages English and afrikaans and go for it.Paradise Chronicle (talk) 19:03, 24 August 2023 (UTC)

swap images

my husband Daniele Scalise is on wikipedia Italia, I'd have to substitute his old pic with a more recent one (I've already changed the texts) thank you Franco Frillici FrancoFr3 (talk) 11:44, 24 August 2023 (UTC)

That's not what Commons Help desk is for. You can swap the pictures yourself (provided the picture is freely licensed for commercial use, which Commons require, you can upload that picture here on Commons as a new file), simply edit the page and change the file link to your desired picture. You don't even need a user account for this (though there are some exceptions, like soft locked pages, etc.), only your IP address will be visible in the edits history log. If you don't know where to start, try asking in Italian Wikipedia's Help desk. Commons only provides common repository for media files used by all other Wikimedia projects. Though if it's your husband's picture, you may have an unacceptable conflict of interest. You should probably read it:Wikipedia:Conflitto_di_interessi before possibly getting yourself in trouble. - Jmabel ! talk 16:24, 24 August 2023 (UTC)

Upload picture of mounted photo

Hi,

I took a picture of a 1962 framed photo of Coal Harbour, Vancouver Island so is it okay to upload it and publish ?

thanks for any info.

Mike Peel Mpeel (talk) 17:29, 24 August 2023 (UTC)

That would depend on the copyright status of the 1962 framed photograph. 1962 is after when photographs are public domain in Canada, and URAA would have restored the copyright on the photograph. Some more information on the photograph itself would be needed (like who was the photographer). Abzeronow (talk) 17:36, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
The issue is entirely about the original photo. Whoever shot it in 1962 (or their heirs) certainly still retains copyright, at least in the U.S. which is where our servers are located. So unless you know who that is and can get their permission, no, it cannot be on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 19:48, 24 August 2023 (UTC)

Wikimedia Images: Is there a difference between structured data and categories / location tags?

Hi,

I'm going to try to use an image that I've uploaded as an example to my question.

Here is the example image: File:Juvenile Northern mockingbird.jpg

If you look at edit source for that image, you can see that there is:

  • location data: {Location|41.735901|-72.6351}

But there is also a separate???? section for the image titled "Structured Data" where I can specify information like: Category:Mimus polyglottos

  • depicts: Northern Mockingbird, beak, bird, etc.
  • creator: me
  • coordinates of point of view: 41°44'9.244"N, 72°38'6.360"W

Questions:

  • What's the difference between Structured data and the category tags and location data? Are they the same thing? When should I favor one over the other?
  • If Structured Data is NOT the same thing as "category", is there a way to use Structured Data to automatically register categorical data for the image?
  • Similarly, is "Coordinates of point of view" identical to location? Is there a way to get these variables to "cross-reference" each other?

Thank you.

Pdanese (talk) 18:41, 21 August 2023 (UTC)

@Pdanese: these are two distinct, overlapping systems. The category-and-text system is older; Structured Data for Commons (SDC) only dates back about 5 years. Some people would like it eventually to become the dominant (or sole) system here, but that remains controversial, to say the least.
There is no exact equivalent of categories in SDC, although there is an extensive list of supported properties, of which the most important is probably depicts (P180).
coordinates of the point of view (P1259) is, as far as I know, an exact equivalent of {{Location}}. Most coordinates of the point of view (P1259) values have been filled in from Location templates by a bot, though there is no problem with hand-entering them. A bot will notice if there is a discrepancy between the two, and use a maintenance category to mark that.
No, there is currently no way to use structured data to generate categories. In fact, I had proposed exactly that but lost out. At that point, the discussion would get more into organizational politics and less into a "help desk" issue. Feel free to hit me up for that discussion, but this is not the place for it. - Jmabel ! talk 19:32, 21 August 2023 (UTC)

Ukrainian president's website

I would like to upload some images from the Ukrainian president's website, but I am a bit confused about the license. See, the website itself states the following: "The Presidential Office of Ukraine. All materials featured on this site are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International. The use of any materials posted on the website is permitted provided you link to www.president.gov.ua regardless of full or partial use of materials." However, the current license used on Wikimedia allows images from the website to be uploaded on to Commons if the website uploaded them prior to 4 October 2022. Now I am not really sure what to do. Is it still okay to upload this images or is it prohibited now? Bakir123 (talk) 14:24, 24 August 2023 (UTC)

Before October 4, 2022, Presidential Office of Ukraine had licensed files as CC-BY 4.0. Since Creative Commons licenses are irrevocable, we can keep the images from before that date. To be able to upload images, you'd have to show that they were uploaded there before the license changed. If the images are from October 4, 2022 or after, we cannot accept them. Abzeronow (talk) 15:48, 24 August 2023 (UTC)

@Abzeronow I am aware of that. These images are from after 4 October. But the thing is that the owner still releases them as a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International. From what I know, it is free to copy and redistribute the work in any way. So I am just asking to be sure if I can upload those images. I understand that the images are from after the wanted date, but the website clearly says that the images can still be free use. Am I right, or? Bakir123 (talk) 16:12, 24 August 2023 (UTC)

No. Commons does not accept non-commercial or no-derivatives licenses, let alone one which is both. - Jmabel ! talk 16:25, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
Specifically, CC-ND-NC images are free to use, but Commons requires that the images are free to use and modify which is not allowed for no-derivatives license. Additionally we also require that "free to use" does not include limitations for use such as no non-commercial use. MKFI (talk) 06:56, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
@MKFI: I presume you meant to write "no commercial use". I've never heard of a specific "no non-commercial use" restriction. - Jmabel ! talk 17:30, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
Yes, should have been "no commercial use". MKFI (talk) 20:23, 25 August 2023 (UTC)

translating graph labels

I want to upload a version of a file with the labels in English without overwriting the existing file with labels in French. I haven't done this in a while, should I be doing this at the page for the French file, which looks like it will overwrite it, or just uploading it separately with its own file name? New file name, definitely credit the original, and if the only difference is the labels connect the two files using {{Other version}}; if you are making other changes besides labels, then probably {{Derivative works}} / {{Derived from}}. - Jmabel ! talk 17:34, 25 August 2023 (UTC)

  • 1) the authors and copyright status of the original medals, and
  • 2) the author and copyright status of the photographs. You indicate yourself as the author of the images and at the same time Нарисовано по фото в интернете, which seems contradictory. A clearer description of the situation would be better.

Hi, my name is Stefan Florin (manager marketing team weryon.ro) and i represent Sebastian Ciobanu, who has his page with Wiki: https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebastian_Ciobanu and who wants to change the picture chosen by the Wikipedia editor for his profile, How we can proceeed?. Thank you in advance. Weryon Digital Marketing (talk) 06:09, 21 August 2023 (UTC)

The biography article about Sebastian Ciobanu doesn't have any picture and it does not seem, that there is any image of Sebastian Ciobanu on Commons. if there was a picture of Sebastian Ciobanu available on Commons, sooner or later a Wikpedian may add it to the biography of Sebastian Ciobanu on the different language Wikipedias. If there is a portrait image of Sebastian Ciobanu with a free license available on the internet anyone can import it to commons. If a photographer (or someone who received the full copyright of the fotograph) has an image them can upload the image to commons. If you have one or more fotos of Sebastian Ciobanu, you can upload these image, if you check before, that you own the full copyright (i.e. the fotographer transferred the full rights to you). You need to give the name of the author (the fotographer) and the source (where it has been published before) and as it is not your own work, you will also need to send a permission to VRT (click the link and read, how to do the VRT process). Addional note: Your account name is the name of a company. At english Wikipedia you will get blocked fot that name immedially. You can request a renaming at meta and as you are a representative of a company you should both verify the account and disclose that you are a representative of a company. The rules differ between different Wikipedias. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 07:47, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
Manny thanks! Weryon Digital Marketing (talk) 14:48, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
  • @Weryon Digital Marketing: I think User:C.Suthorn has made this a little more complicated than it needs to be, by trying to cover all cases (though he is very correct on his advice to change your account name and disclosing that you are a representative of the company; I'd also add, you should read en:WP:COI about conflicts of interest). But as for the photo, here are the three easiest ways to do it:
    1. Have a photographer take the picture (or pictures). If they already have an established web presence of their own, have them place the pictures on their own web site/Flickr page/whatever and indicate overtly that they offer a it under the {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}} license (which means they reserve the right of attribution, but allow derivative works and commercial use, both of which are required by Commons). Then anyone with an account can indicate that page as a source and upload the photo.
    2. Have a photographer take the picture (or pictures). Have them create their own Wikimedia Commons account (if they don't already have one) and upload it themself, using the {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}} license. They should use their user page to state clearly who they are. There is still some possibility they would have to go through the process outlined at COM:VRT if someone doubts that the photo is really theirs, but given that we are having this discussion now I think that would be easily sorted out; you can just refer them to me and I can probably settle it without that process.
    3. Have a photographer take the picture (or pictures); have anyone (including yourself) upload the picture using the {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}} license, and mark the file page as explained at Template:Permission pending. Then have the photographer send permission as described at COM:VRT.
There are a few other ways to do this, but I believe these are the most straightforward. - Jmabel ! talk 19:03, 21 August 2023 (UTC)

  • @Unbandito: At the lower right that indicates that it was copyrighted when first created (1934). Under copyright law at that time, they'd have had to renew copyright in 1962. If they did that, then it is copyrighted through 2029; if not, it is now {{PD-US-not renewed}}. You'd need to look through the 1962 copyright renewals and see if the copyrights for this were renewed or not. I'm honestly not sure whether the 1962 renewal records can be found online; someone at Commons:Village pump/Copyright would know. - Jmabel ! talk 22:51, 25 August 2023 (UTC)

Copyright question and rotate question

Hello,

I wanted to upload a picture (made by me) of a town hall in Raszków, Poland. The town hall in question was renovated in 2018, but it was first built in 19th century. My question is: Can I upload a picture like that?

Also, when i tried to upload the picture using the Upload Wizard, it was rotated the wrong way. How can I fix it? Walfip (talk) 10:15, 26 August 2023 (UTC)

Walfip: I cannot see that you have uploaded any images that have not been deleted. Which image are you talking about? You can add a rotate request to the file page by following the details found here: Template:Rotate. Ww2censor (talk) 10:55, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
Perhaps I used some wrong words. What I meant was that during the Upload stage of the Upload Wizard the picture was rotated the wrong way (the supposed bottom of the picture was on the left), so I did not try to upload it because it would be wrongly rotated. The picture was never uploaded nor deleted, so you could not see it. Walfip (talk) 12:15, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for answering the rotate question. However, one question remains: Can I upload a picture like this? Walfip (talk) 12:22, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
@Walfip: You may try. I have seen that happen in the Upload Wizard, with mixed results (wrong rotations were fixable after upload).   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:24, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
@Walfip: According to COM:FOP Poland, Poland has a generous freedom of panorama for anything publicly exhibited. How to Remove Wrong Image from a Page?

How can I get an image removed from a Wikimedia Commons page? The person in the picture is not the person whose page it is. I requested a deletion a month ago, with detailed reasons, and never received a response.

Page is Lotte Lehmann's page: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?search=lotte+lehmann&title=Special:MediaSearch&go=Go&type=image

Image is of LILLI Lehmann, not LOTTE Lehmann: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lilli_Lehmann_as_%27Venus%27_in_Wagner%27s_Tannh%C3%A4user.jpg

This picture has been used in at least two different Wikipedia pages, and incorrectly identified as being Lotte Lehmann. I was able to modify the name in the image description (it was originally listed as Lotte Lehmann as well), but it should be removed from Lotte Lehmann's page.

Thank you. SP-lava (talk) 02:10, 25 August 2023 (UTC)

  • @SP-lava: that's not really a Commons page, it's just a search result. Probably if you put "Lotte Lehmann" in quotes, you'll get a better search result. File:Lilli_Lehmann_as_'Venus'_in_Wagner's_Tannhäuser.jpg (which is a Commons page) appears now to be entirely correct. - Jmabel ! talk 02:22, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
Thanks @Jmabel. I did not realize The images I found were a search result, I thought they were on a specific Lotte Lehmann page, that people had added pictures of her to. Clearly I do not yet understand Wikimedia Commons - I thought it was like a Wikipedia page, a dedicated page that aggregates information on one specific person, concept, or thing. I did what you suggested, and tried a different search with quotes around the first and last name, but LILLI Lehmann's picture still showed up. Is there any identifying information I can edit on the page for https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lilli_Lehmann_as_%27Venus%27_in_Wagner%27s_Tannh%C3%A4user.jpg to further refine the description, so it doesn't show up on a Lotte Lehmann search? The goal here is to stop people from inadvertently choosing that image when they are wanting to illustrate something about Lotte Lehmann. (In fact, she never sang the opera role shown in the image.) Thank you.~~ SP-lava (talk) 22:16, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel -- I did some digging and found that when I first reported this, back in July, the request for deletion was denied, but the file was renamed using a redirect to reflect it was Lilli Lehmann. Could the redirect be the reason it still shows up in a search? If you can think of a solution, please let me know. Thanks. ~~ SP-lava (talk) 22:28, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
    • It's some sort of problem with the search. Maybe it's using an old cache? Maybe the redirect? We usually hesitate to delete redirect for a file that had a given wrong name for any significant period of time because there is a fair chance someone is still using the redirect. As far as I can tell, Category:Lotte Lehmann appears to be fine. - Jmabel ! talk 22:31, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
@SP-lava: Yes, it is because of the redirect. If the search is performed with Special:Search, it shows in bold the words that the search finds, and for this file it indicates that it is the words in the redirect. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:14, 26 August 2023 (UTC)

How to upload text data (JSON) with images?

Hi!

I'm preparing to upload a bunch of images from the Nasjonalmuseet for kunst, arkitektur og design. I wrote a script to hit the Digitalt Museum's API and pull down a bunch of data, like when the work was created, the author, etc. I then parse this data and generate the Wikitext and templates I need for the image. (Example page with some bugs to still work out.)

I'd like to include the raw data from the API (which is sort of an ugly JSON blog) because I have to make some lossy choices with my parsing and I want to make sure future editors have something to fall back on to fix it if I made a wrong choice with how I'm using the data.

I've considered Template:Created with code but am not sure this is the best way to preserve the data. Any suggestions? Thanks! -- Falcorian (talk) 04:05, 28 August 2023 (UTC)

You could include the raw text data in the description page and then instantly create a new revision of the description page with the data removed and document the presence and removal in th edit comment. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 08:37, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
Those are both good ideas! I like the "comment out" option at first glance because then I don't have to have my bot do two edits, which should be slightly easier. -- Falcorian (talk) 01:02, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

Potential Incorrect Identification

Hello. I believe this File:William Campbell (Medal of Honor).jpg may not actually be the person it says it is. I have further reasoning at the talk page of William Campbell but I would like to see if there is a relevant forum on Wikimedia to discuss potential changes to the data of the original file. Thanks in advance! Clyde Jimpson of the Arkansas String Beans (talk) 15:08, 28 August 2023 (UTC)

@Clyde Jimpson of the Arkansas String Beans: Hello, This type of question could be more for Wikipedia. You could ask at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Humanities. There's no specific page on Commons. There's Commons:Village pump for general discussions. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:32, 28 August 2023 (UTC)

An artist's works

Through message, upon being asked by me, an artist told me that I could reuse all his art works (that he uploaded in social media, specifically in Instagram and Twitter) without asking him, even in YouTube but I should mention his name wherever I reused it. But he didn't mention any licensing statement in any of his public uploads! Can I upload those arts? If so, what are the cautions and precautions that I should take up before and after uploading those pictures? Haoreima (talk) 20:09, 28 August 2023 (UTC)

Works of art from a Museum

Can the pictures taken from a Museum's website be uploaded giving full credit to the artist and the current Museum where it is housed? Untitledjuan (talk) 01:33, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

  • @Untitledjuan: typically, no. Nothing special about a museum in this respect. Most (probably 98%) of what you will find online is copyrighted and not free-licensed, and therefore ineligible for Commons.
  • Exception: non-creative photos of older, two-dimensional works (U.S. works published before 1928; most non-U.S. work where the artist died before 1953, though some will run afoul of that U.S. rule, it's complicated) are often in the public domain and can be uploaded on that basis.
  • The above is an effort to give quick rules of thumb on something that is actually very complicated; if you don't know your way around copyright law, I'd suggest avoiding museum images of 20th- and 21st-century works, and also avoid anything that includes showing a frame, because the frame will be three-dimensional. - Jmabel ! talk 02:54, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

Wikidata infobox

I have added a category about a building that has an entry in Wikidata. I copied the name of the Wikidata item to be the name of the category, but when I add the {Wikidata infobox} tag I get the message "NO WIKIDATA ID FOUND!" How do I link this category to the Wikidata item? The category is "Channelkirk Church"

TIA -- PeterK147 (talk) 14:44, 28 August 2023 (UTC)

Convenience link: Category:Channelkirk Church. - Jmabel ! talk 14:52, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
this (on Wikidata) fixes it. Wikidata, not Commons, controls what Commons categories are connected to what Wikidata items. - Jmabel ! talk 14:55, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
Hi @PeterK147: the above solution allows you to use {{Wikidata Infobox}} in its simplest form. If you are not confident in editing Wikidata (yet) you can include the "qid" parameter into the template at the Commons end. In this case it would have looked like: {{ Wikidata Infoboxqid = Q17567874 }} to get the same result. FotoFree (talk) 15:41, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
But, unless I'm mistaken, using an explicit QID on Commons does not provide the Interwiki links, which must be done on Wikidata. - Jmabel ! talk 18:17, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
Hi @Jmabel: , yes, I think you are right there. Proper sitelinks, between the WikiData item and Commons Category, have to be set up at the WD end using your example edit above. Perhaps the template "qid" parameter is intended for another purpose, but the question sparked a memory braincell in me that I was once in the same position. At that time WikiData looked 'scary' so I used that (seemingly simpler) alternative. Now I realise WD is actually quite cool, so would heavily recommend doing it the proper way and set up sitelinks explicitly at WD, by taking a bit more time to learn about it. Open to other's input as I am not very technically up on this - e.g. would a bot on WD add a sitelink from the template call from Commons? Probably not possible. Sorry to promote something if it causes problems... FotoFree (talk) 07:56, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
The purpose is that you might have more than one category that needs to refer to the same QID: when Commons splits something that Wikidata lumps. - Jmabel ! talk 14:57, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

Old postcard with photo of a building, photo taken ~ 1939, postcard sent 1940.

Old postcard with photo of a building, photo taken ~ 1939, postcard sent 1940. To my opinion all copyrights are expired. How can I make use of this photo to upload it to Commons without getting objections from watchdogs? Lupo.aneth (talk) 18:38, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

Please elaborate on details of this postcard: which country published it? Abzeronow (talk) 19:09, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
By describing the source of the reproduction, the photographer, the country of first publication of the postcard, the country where the building is or was located, the architect, and the specific rationale for the conclusion about the copyright status of the building and the copyright status of the photo. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:17, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

Upload the coats of arms of municipalities

Can upload the coats of arms of municipalities of Venezuela to the Wikimedia Commons?? AbchyZa22 (talk) 22:07, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

@AbchyZa22: There's no general answer to that. Anyone can render an image from a blazon. Any given rendering would have its own copyright. If the blazon is new enough and unique enough to retain a copyright of its own, you might have an issue with that rendering being considered a derivative work, but otherwise any given rendering of a blazon is just like any other drawing: if it's above the threshold of originality, it is copyrighted at creation by the person who drew it; eventually (though typically after many decades) it will fall into the public domain. So unless you are rendering the blazon yourself, the usual issues will arise that would arise for copyright status of any other drawing. - Jmabel ! talk 00:37, 30 August 2023 (UTC)

Photos of my grandmother, actress & singer Marie Burke

Wikipedia have a page on my grandmother, actress & singer Marie Burke. I would like to upload some of the photos of her from our family albums, but I did not take them. Quite a few were 'publicity' photos, or scans of old programmes, e.g. 'The Great Waltz' at the Center Theatre on Broadway in 1934. Can I upload them? I am especially keen as the photo on the Wikipedia page is not actually of Grannie Marie, & I'd like to put the record straight. Carolwellwood (talk) 22:58, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

  • U.S. programs and publicity photos from that era typically will fall under {{PD-US-not renewed}}. You'd have to go through the usual checking to make sure copyright was not renewed. Someone at Commons:Village pump/Copyright should be able to help with that.
  • As for family photos, if you are the heir to the intellectual property of the photographer, you can use something like {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}. If not, you'd need the person who does own those rights either to upload and license them, or to go through the COM:VRT process.
  • Yeah, I know it's complicated. Sorting out copyright on things that are old but not super-old can be really tricky. - Jmabel ! talk 00:43, 30 August 2023 (UTC)

Markers misplaced in PNG preview of SVG image

Hello. Arrow markers are displaced in PNG preview of SVG image File:Wiatrownica klapowo-zasuwowa - schemat.svg. Can you pelase fix? Regards TazGPL (talk) 05:52, 27 August 2023 (UTC)

Commons uses an old version of librsvg for this PNG rendering and it has a lot of bugs. Until it gets updated, unfortunately the only way to fix problems is to work around the bugs. As far as I can see, the issue is that the arrowheads are directed by the auto-start-reverse function, which is not supported by librsvg. I am not aware of another way to get the same result using a different function, maybe someone else does? I'd say the easiest solution would be to just draw the arrowheads using simple lines in a triangle shape. That will be rendered fine. Madfly2 (talk) 21:52, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
I'll give it a try. Thanks! TazGPL (talk) 04:33, 30 August 2023 (UTC)

Keeping original resolution of maps

Hello. I am facing issues with keeping original resolution of maps I take a screenshot of. For example, I uploaded File:Map of Europe and neighbors.svg from Political Map of Europe. I used it in Wikipedia but it was removed due to legibility issues. I noticed that the original map doesn't have legibility issues as my uploaded copy. Investigating the issue further indicates that the screenshot mechanism of the operating system might be the culprit. My question then is, is there a tool you suggest I use to copy maps to upload them here to keep the original resolution? Regards, Thinker78 (talk) 18:21, 30 August 2023 (UTC)

@Thinker78: Hi, and welcome. In the case of deviantart, please log in to deviantart and then use the built-in download button. Doing that with this file produced a 39,736 KB file named "political_map_of_europe_by_shadrol_d7hf7lg.png", roughly 18x the size of your upload (before cropping).   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:37, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
Thank you. I will do that. Is there another option you suggest when there is no download button? Regards, Thinker78 (talk) 18:40, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
@Thinker78: In the current Chrome for Windows, unless the site disallows, I can right-click on the image and then click "Open image in new tab" to see what they are hiding, click "Save image as..." to save it, click "Copy image" to copy it for pasting into an image editor like the GIMP, or click "Copy image address" to help with precise attribution. Your browser may vary.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:48, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for the tip. I tried it out and found out that saving image also reduces resolution unless I use a specific format that keeps the resolution, like PNG. Regards, Thinker78 (talk) 01:42, 1 September 2023 (UTC)

need a slight tweak to an image

the slany shanty

See image at right. I took this in a hurry, because it was a real rarity for there to be only one vehicle out front in the middle of the day (it has since been badly damaged by fire) So, I see now that in my haste I did not really level my phone very well and the building appears to be slanted, which it was not. I'm not really too adept at photo manipulation so if someone who is could just adjust this slightly that would be great. Beeblebrox (talk) 20:09, 30 August 2023 (UTC)

More permissive license

Hello, I have over the last couple weeks uploaded several of my own works to Commons (e.g. File:Aleppo pepper jarred.jpg). I originally uploaded them under CC-BY-SA 4.0 without thinking about it, but I would actually like them under a CC0 license. How can I change this? I know there's no way to go the other way, but it seems like I should be able to make the license more permissive. TheTechnician27 (talk) 02:30, 31 August 2023 (UTC)

Update: I think I did it right. TheTechnician27 (talk) 02:39, 31 August 2023 (UTC)
@TheTechnician27: That's probably OK, but usually when adding a more permissive license, you don't remove the old one. Instead, you offer a choice of licenses. - Jmabel ! talk 03:03, 31 August 2023 (UTC)
That makes sense. In this case, since the new license is CC0, it seems reasonable to just let it be the sole license since it grants permission to do anything with it. TheTechnician27 (talk) 03:06, 31 August 2023 (UTC)
Not only is it reasonable, but it's the only possibility. Those two statuses are incompatible. One could not claim the copyright and license a work that has been dedicated to the public domain. -- Asclepias (talk) 11:06, 31 August 2023 (UTC)
@Asclepias: not legally clear whether you can really abrogate copyright (in some countries it is legally clear that you can't). CC-0 falls in such cases falls back to "but you can treat it as if I did." Some people might actually prefer the CC-BY-SA, especially if they want attribution for their derivative work they may want to make sure the original is attributed as well. (They could deal with that by a more elaborate attribution, I suppose.) Anyway, it's not quite as simple as "dedicated to the public domain," though that is certainly the intention. - Jmabel ! talk 18:13, 31 August 2023 (UTC)

Forgot to assign the license of my upload File:AAI-4 Modus Bamalip (Venn) RGB.png

Hi there, forgot to enter the license when uploading File:AAI-4 Modus Bamalip (Venn) RGB.png. How can I fix it? Qniemiec (talk) 21:09, 31 August 2023 (UTC)

@Qniemiec: Edit the file page to add the license, just like you are editing here. Since you don't say what license, I can't really say something more specific about what you should add. - Jmabel ! talk 22:35, 31 August 2023 (UTC)
But it looks like you've already done that, offering a plethora of licenses. - Jmabel ! talk 22:37, 31 August 2023 (UTC)
Yes, if I've understood it correctly, in case of forgetting the license, it can be fixed by editing the file's description and appending the respective licence tag, e.g. {{PD-self}} or {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}}. But I was too panicked by this deletion warning in the middle of the night to calm down and read what was recommended there later on as an aid. Qniemiec (talk) 12:19, 1 September 2023 (UTC)

Uploading my brand-new author icon to Commons

About a week ago, a Redditor by the name of "LeoTheFloofyDragon" delivered this portrait of my blue-furred tanuki avatar, which I intend to use not only as the top-left icon for my creative-venture wiki, but also my WP userpage portrait. (This becomes important in the commentary for an FTA post I'm currently preparing on MH, my first since late June.) Before any of you ask, here's a transcript from RDT chat on Saturday afternoon confirming his permission:

Routhwick: "Afternoon, Leo. Care if I give you a reminder before long?"

LeoTheFloofyDragon: "Reminder?"

R: "Yep. Uploading soon (with your kind permission) under my wiki's preferred PD waivers."

L: "Ofc!
"I just ask that you credit me as the maker of that piece somewhere if you don't mind"

R: "As I always do in my descriptions/commentary."

L: "Awesome, tysm :3"

If The Harvett Vault (talk · contribs) could do it (sorry if Commons gave you a hard time on your uploads recently), then so might I. Any further advice? --Slgrandson (talk) 18:22, 21 August 2023 (UTC)

@Slgrandson: if the artist wants attribution, I would recommend strongly against a PD waiver. That does not retain the right of attribution. Use {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}} instead.
I'm going to assume right now that the artist has not formally transferred copyright to you; if they have, then this gets more complicated. Say so below and I'll give you the more complicated version.
The simplest way to clarify permission would be for the artist to add a comment to that Reddit post indicating the license they are offering (again, presumably {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}}) and how they want to be attributed. Then anyone (including you) can upload that, citing that page as the source, and using the indicated license. - Jmabel ! talk 19:19, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Any moment soon, I'll remind Leo of COM:VRT (né OTRS) to save face. (Pinging now before this gets stale.) --Slgrandson (talk) 21:13, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Relayed your advice/my VRT suggestion to Leo via RDT chat. Still awaiting further consultation from another 1-3 Commons clerks before I move ahead. (Happy Labor Day!) --Slgrandson (talk) 00:19, 5 September 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Just gave Leo an "ELI5" ("Explain Like I'm Five") on the licensing requirements + VRT. Any further developments, and I'll reach back. Anyone else to give us a hand? --Slgrandson (talk) 07:07, 11 September 2023 (UTC)
@Slgrandson: I agree with Jmabel on this. Five year olds may not license their content.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 08:03, 11 September 2023 (UTC)
Yes, but that "ELI5" bit is just an expression. --Slgrandson (talk) 08:07, 11 September 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Sadly, Leo's had second thoughts about the Commons go-round; from what I heard from him on the 11th, he doesn't want his real name out (though I suggested his Reddit handle should be O.K.). Would you mind perhaps if I did the honours on his behalf instead? (Either under the terms you recommended earlier, or under my preferred ones.) Apart from @Jeff G., anyone else care to weigh in further? --Slgrandson (talk) 23:58, 19 September 2023 (UTC)
@Slgrandson: if you are doing on his behalf, then we need the VRT. And he may choose any attribution he likes. - Jmabel ! talk 01:00, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
Sorry, @Jmabel. Pinged Leo again yesterday, asking for the license option; haven't heard back from him yet. What's a long-time furry friend/wiki webmaster to do? --Slgrandson (talk) 23:13, 29 September 2023 (UTC)
Sorry to keep this hanging around here, @Jmabel et al., but this might as well be the (second-to-)last on-hold ping on this matter. If this goes nowhere, we'll try our luck with another artist soon and hope they respond with the license confirmation. Otherwise, I'll let you know if things have changed. --Slgrandson (talk) 08:27, 8 October 2023 (UTC)
