Image warping after resizing

I uploaded File:Josephoartigasia monesi skull.png, and then reuploaded a new version with taller margins on the top and bottom so the image would be a bit more square. But, when it's used as a thumb, it displays a super stretched image of version 1. I think I have to manually clear a cache or something, but I don't know how Dunkleosteus77 (talk) 01:20, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

B/W photos of WW2 Royal Navy ships

3x B/W photographs from the 1940's. Left to me by my Godfather who was most likely the photographer as he served on all 3 ships during WW2. He was a keen photographer, but I have no proof that they were taken by him. Will I be infringing any copyright?Cartwheelbob (talk) 15:47, 1 August 2022 (UTC)

Issue with multilingual svgs

When viewing multilingual svgs, labels appear in multiple languages, even if I have selected English. For example, when viewing File:2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.svg, I see "Bila Tserkva" and "Boryspil" in English, and "基輔" and "布查" in Chinese at the same time. Although I am fluent in both languages, it makes it difficult to comfortably view the map. Wk1028 (talk) 08:23, 2 August 2022 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:SMA LABSSCHOOL UNSYIAH LOGO.svg

this is the official logo of the labschool Unsyiah High School/labschool Unsyiah Senior High School, so the license is clear and original. The logo follows the logo of the Syiah Kuala university, because this school is under the auspices of the Syiah Kuala University (USK

- SMA LABSCHOOL UNSYIAH

--Luthfi Nabil Ramadhan (talk) 03:22, 3 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi Lufthfi Nabil Ramadhan. If it's an official logo of the school, then the school is likely also the copyright holder of the logo. This means that Commons can't really keep the file without verifying that the school has agreed to release an image of the logo under a copyright license that Commmons accepts. For more information on this, please take a look at this, this, this and this. If you can get an official representative of the school to agree to release the file under a license that Commons accepts, then the file can be kept; if not, then it's going to need to be deleted. For what it's worth, the logo can be seen on the school's official website, but if you scroll down to the very bottom of the website you find that it states "Copyright © SMA Laboratorium Unsyiah". This means that the school is claiming copyright ownership over the content appearing on its website, which means such content can't really be uploaded to Commons without copyright holder consent. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:58, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
@Luthfi Nabil Ramadhan: I also add a little bit info. If the file cannot be accepted on Commons, it could be accepted on English Wikipedia as Fair Use material (see WP:F and WP:LOGO). Make sure to write a detailed and valid Use Rationale for the logo if you decide to upload it to English Wikipedia as per Fair Use. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 08:24, 3 August 2022 (UTC)

Google arts and culture copyright-free?

Hi, I was wondering whether works on google arts and culture are copyright-free. It seems so because Google states "The Cultural Institute platform is open to non-profit institutions, museums, galleries, and archives with copyright-free or copyright-cleared content that they would like to share." (https://support.google.com/culturalinstitute/partners/answer/6002688?hl=en)

Just want to make sure. Thanks. Zenzyyx (talk) 20:21, 3 August 2022 (UTC)

They have to be checked on case by case basis, depending on the authors, the date and place of publication. Yann (talk) 20:35, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
"Copyright-cleared" here just means that if there is a copyright, Google has permission to reproduce it. It doesn't mean free-licensed. - Jmabel ! talk 20:39, 3 August 2022 (UTC)

https://artsandculture.google.com/asset/madam-x-halil-pa%C5%9Fa-turkish-1852-1939/rwG7FHZKYtJa4w This is the painting I am planning to upload to upload to wiki commons. Is it copyright-free? Thanks (Zenzyyx, talk) 20:46, 3 August 2022 (UTC)

It is not a useful source of images. Most images are copied from other sources with better resolution, license and information. There is no easy way to download the images, and no information about the license, even they are obviously in the public domain, i.e. copyright claimed on a NASA picture. Yann (talk) 20:47, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
This painting is in the public domain, and can be upload to Commons under the license {{PD-Art|PD-old-70-expired}}. There may be a better copy on [1]. Yann (talk) 20:50, 3 August 2022 (UTC)

@Jeff G. Thanks a lot! Just want to make sure, can I upload any work from google arts unless copyright is claimed? Thanks again. (Zenzyyx, talk) 21:08, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
@Zenzyyx: As long as you follow COM:L.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:02, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
@Yann Thanks for confirming this. Do you suggest I use the 1886 painting? The license of that has also expired, right? Also, how do I publish the image under that license? I am basically new to image uploading and am unsure how to do so. (Zenzyyx, talk) 21:01, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
There is no "license". It is its copyright that has expired, placing it in the public domain. As remarked above, the tag will be along the lines of {{PD-Art|PD-old-70-expired}}. There are a few others, depending on how old (e.g. {{PD-Art|PD-old-100-expired}}), you can find them in Category:PD-old license tags. - Jmabel ! talk 23:48, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
If you can't work out how to get what you want when uploading, you can always correct it immediately after by editing the file page. - Jmabel ! talk 23:48, 3 August 2022 (UTC)

ウイキペディアへの画像掲載について

About posting images on Wikipedia
1. First upload the image to Wikipedia? But does that mean that it can only be posted after that? 2. Will the uploaded image be available to anyone (I want to make it unusable)? 3. 3. The photo I want to post as an office worker is an aerial photograph related to the company. This photo was ordered from a certain company and delivered. Therefore, I think that the copyright belongs to the company, but how about it? And if you need to upload a photo, how should you answer the question for that?

Hi, and welcome. We can only post photos after they are uploaded. Photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons are available to anyone for use anywhere, that is the point. Photos uploaded directly to Wikipedia can have usage restrictions. Check the contract with the company to see if they sold your office the copyright , or licensed the photo for certain purposes only.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:35, 4 August 2022 (UTC)

Simple link from commons category to Wikipedia page of same topic

I have found myself putting notes like "This is about [[w:Moravia Union Cemetery]]" into commons Category:Moravia Union Cemetery, and similarly, because it is immediately helpful for my own navigating back and forth between Wikipedia article and corresponding Commons category, as i develop both. In the Wikipedia article, the link to Commons cat is by "template:Commons category-inline|Moravia Union Cemetery" or similar. Surely there is a standard template for going from Commons category to Wikipedia article? (But apparently that is neither "template:about" nor "template:main", which have different uses.) Pls ping me in any reply. Thanks in advance! --Doncram (talk) 17:18, 2 August 2022 (UTC)

I think the usual approach is to use the sitelinks from Wikidata, which appear both in the "In Wikipedia" category on the left of the page (assuming the standard skin) and in the {{Wikidata Infobox}} on the right in the form of the "Wikipedia" link near the top. There do seem to be a selection of templates for linking to Wikipedias as well. Ones I've found with a quick search are {{On Wikipedia}}, {{Mainw}}, and {{See also w}}. --bjh21 (talk) 19:36, 2 August 2022 (UTC)
@Doncram: A problem with linking via Wikidata is that Wikidata links Commons categories to Wikipedia categories when the latter exist. Then there will not be a sitelink to the Commons category from the Wikipedia article, nor vice versa. There was some discussion about this when Wikidata was introduced on Commons, but consistency was valued higher than usability. There may still be some tools (including templates) to overcome this. –LPfi (talk) 12:42, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
You could use Template:Mainw, in use at Category:Rolls-Royce Merlin. Template:En does a similar thing. Nimbus227 (talk) 17:46, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
But that one links just to the article in English. The template has "prefix" and "suffix" parameters, but in the example on the template page they seem to do nothing. Anyway, it doesn't make the language links from Wikidata to appear, but you have to add the links manually for any new Wikipedia getting the article, and then there is not much difference to just writing "{{en|1=[[en:London|London]]}}". (Template:en doesn't add any links by itself, and is not intended to.) –LPfi (talk) 11:08, 5 August 2022 (UTC)

deleted photos

I uploaded photos of cars that my husband and I personally own and I personally took the photos. These photos are of very rare cars, benefitting the Wikipedia content with proof of their existence. Why were they deleted? The reasons stated did not make sense and were not applicable to me. Jpistorius (talk) 13:09, 4 August 2022 (UTC)

What do you mean without free licenses? They are my photos and on the internet on my websites. My husband and I own Old Wheel Restorations (formerly Pistorius Collectible Autos) and we are the founders of the Gasparilla Concours d'Elegance. Jpistorius (talk) 13:19, 4 August 2022 (UTC)

Some Page Popups do not show anymore after upgrading to mediawiki-1.37.4

Hi there, We use mediawiki to order our cooking recipes since 2019. I upgraded recently from mediawiki 1.35.1 to 1.37.4. Since then the Popups (using https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Popups – (2c2c6d3) 07:04, 26. Jul. 2022) of some pages are displayed. For many Pages I get a popup window which gives the error message "Es gab ein Problem bei der Anzeige dieser Vorschau", which basically says: "There was a problem displaying this preview". Updating information for NARA (National Archives and Records Administration) images - correcting dates

I noticed that there are many images uploaded from the National Archives and Records Administration using the Template:NARA-image-full. This template states "The metadata on this page was imported directly from NARA's catalog record; additional descriptive text may be added by Wikimedians to the template below with the "description=" parameter, but please do not modify the other fields." There are obviously incorrect "date" fields, for instance "Ceremonies - Preparedness Day, Washington, D.C. - President Woodrow Wilson in Preparedness Parade, Washington, D.C - NARA - 23922795.jpg" which has a date field of "1917 – 1918" when the image itself says June 14, 1916. What should a person do in this circumstance? Update the "Date" field? Only update the Structured Data "inception" field? Caddyshack01 (talk) 15:14, 4 August 2022 (UTC)

@Caddyshack01: Probably the first suggestion, but you may want to ask at Template talk:NARA-image-full, too.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:20, 4 August 2022 (UTC)
We should remove that statement from the template. There is no reason we should be bound to repeat incorrect metadata, especially when it's a common issue across the many thousands of NARA uploads. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 18:55, 4 August 2022 (UTC)
The false date should probably be moved to an "original description" field. Such an "original description" is often quoted e.g. for WW2 images with propagandistic descriptions. Just removing the false date may cause confusion later. –LPfi (talk) 11:18, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
I think this is a good solution, but I wouldn't want to make any changes until there is a consensus on this topic. There are many images with missing or inaccurate details (date, description, author) and file names which are undescriptive in the NARA catalog. Another example is here 111-SC-36855 - NARA - 55232893.jpg, where an author and date are listed, but not included in the NARA metadata on wikimedia or NARA. Caddyshack01 (talk) 14:23, 6 August 2022 (UTC)
@Caddyshack01: Isn't the date supposed to be the date recorded? Then it would be actually correct being 1917 – 1918, as the date recorded says "Apr. 1918" on the picture. Date taken is Jun 14 1916, which is written in the description field as "Scope and Content". Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 12:06, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
In that case both dates would be relevant. Please clearly tell in the file description what the different dates stand for. –LPfi (talk) 20:30, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
@Polda18 and LPfi: I am finding it challenging to anything definitive on the purpose of the "|date=" field in an infobox, however on template:information it is "Date of creation, when the original source (such as photograph of 3-D scene, digital file, or original 2-D artwork, or SVG drawing) was created" and on Commons:Structured data/Modeling/Date the inception SDC is for "and which should be used for storing the time...photograph was taken". So from this, the proper use of the date field on the NARA images would be the stamped "Taken Date", and other dates such as the metadata and "Date Recorded" would go into the description? Caddyshack01 (talk) 14:35, 6 August 2022 (UTC)
That makes sense. Then NARA should update their process to fix this issue. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 14:53, 6 August 2022 (UTC)

How to monitor only one category

I want to know how to see only photos add to an specific category. To be more clear, I want to see all photos recently add to Category:Images from Wiki Loves Earth 2022 in Brazil without seeing all photos add to all other categories that I follow. Thx -- Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton m 19:46, 4 August 2022 (UTC)

@Rodrigo.Argenton: Is Special:RecentChangesLinked/Category:Images from Wiki Loves Earth 2022 in Brazil what you're looking for? You might need to adjust the filters to catch just the kind of edit you're interested in. --bjh21 (talk) 09:03, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
@Bjh21: , thx for trying, but no, even with all filters on the related categories appears, so looks the same as my filters at my wachlist. -- Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton m 09:11, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
@Rodrigo.Argenton: I think the best you can do is only category changes and cut everything else out. It still shows the other categories but this is fairly limited to the category changes to the files in the category. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 20:40, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
Rodrigo.Argenton: you should get User:OgreBot to add your request to their User:OgreBot/gallery. You can try asking on the gallery talk page or maybe ask User:Magog the Ogre directly. Even though the bot is semi-active, it seems to be working properly. You can select as many categories as you like and even exclude sub-categories as you desire. Ww2censor (talk) 20:57, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
It is a watchlist, but just for the category given. I use the corresponding rss feeds to monitor a number of categories. Agathoclea (talk) 06:39, 6 August 2022 (UTC)

Hung Cao Photo

Hey, I was trying to find a photo to add for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_United_States_House_of_Representatives_elections_in_Virginia#District_10 on Hung Cao, but when I try to add an image to Wikicommons, it's giving some disclaimer about how it has to be my original art. Woods

Category:Woods presently seems to be a bit of a muddle, including both the substance (same as Category:Wood?) and the treed area (same as Category:Woodlands?). Does it serve any useful distinct purpose? ITookSomePhotos (talk) 00:17, 6 August 2022 (UTC)

Probably could become a disambiguation leading to those two categories. - Jmabel ! talk 05:56, 6 August 2022 (UTC)
I see that Category:Woodlands defines "woodlands" as "low-density forest forming open habitats with plenty of sunlight and limited shade". However, to me, a "wood" can be high-density, just typically smaller than a forest (although no doubt somewhere you could find a "wood" as large as some other "forest"). ITookSomePhotos (talk) 17:45, 6 August 2022 (UTC)
In fact, I'm beginning to think it would be easier if woods and forests were combined into one category, since the difference is hard to precisely define. Then we wouldn't have to worry about it. Whether "woodlands" needs to be distinct is not very clear to me. ITookSomePhotos (talk) 20:06, 6 August 2022 (UTC)

Photo of mayor election campaign picture on house wall

I recently took a photo of a painting on a house wall in Cologne (not North Korea, as one might think ;-), showing Cologne mayor Henriette Reker (ordered and paid by her to support her last election campaign in 2020). My photo is quite similar to this commercial one (above).

I would like to upload my photo under a free licence. May I, or could this cause trouble due to possible copyrights on the painting? --Anti. (talk) 11:56, 6 August 2022 (UTC)

@Anti.: Hi, and welcome. As Cologne is in Germany, COM:FOP Germany applies. I don't think the work is permanent (as it will probably be overpainted after the election), so I think COM:PRP applies, and you should not upload it without permission from the artist.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:10, 6 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi, thanks. In fact, this painting seems to be permanent. The election took place on 13th September 2020, the painting was made a few weeks before and it is still on the house wall today. This article explained that "election posters in public spaces normally must be taken down promptly after the respective election. However, this does not apply to murals on private house facades". There seems to have been no attempt or plan to remove/overpaint it since then at all.
So, to me, it "serves the purpose of a not-merely-temporary presentation", so an upload should actually be legal ..? --Anti. (talk) 13:08, 6 August 2022 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: What do you think? --Anti. (talk) 23:39, 6 August 2022 (UTC)

How can I easily see featured/quality images in a given category?

Some categories have "Featured images of..." - sadly https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Beaches is without one.

There is "Good pictures" button in header, sadly it just shows "Connecting..." on clicking.

Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 21:53, 5 August 2022 (UTC)

I tried https://petscan.wmflabs.org/ but its intersection of Category:Featured pictures and Category:Controlled-access highways (depth set to 10) runs forever and gives https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File%3ASearching%5Ffor%5Fbodies%2C%5FGalveston%5F1900%2Eogv and https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File%3AToronto%5F%2D%5FON%5F%2D%5FCN%5FTower%5Fbei%5FNacht2%2Ejpg - are there really no featured pictures of any motorways? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 12:23, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
Quality images + Controlled-access highways also found nothing useful ([3]) But https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:20190825_Autostrada_A4_w_Krakowie_0957_5675_DxO.jpg exists. In conclusion manual categories like Category:Quality images of roads and streets are needed to find anything Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 12:29, 7 August 2022 (UTC)

Image of a table

Hello, I am trying to upload an image of a table I created. The table is original using data from the ICC and World Population. Marloow (talk) 22:27, 7 August 2022 (UTC)

@Marloow: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png image as a new user. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to license it on your official website or social media or send permission via VRT. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. Also, please think about converting the table to wikitext via mw:Help:Tables, as tables of text are generally oos here.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:20, 7 August 2022 (UTC)

My template does not work

Hi. I am creating a template for URLs linked to nlc.cn. But it does not work as expected. My template: Template:NLC-Book-Link, example usage: Commons:Library back up project/file list/NLC/宋人文集. It resulted in something like: [1]&showType=1&indexName=data_411&fid=00320 instead of a normal link. Could anyone please advice me how to fix that? Thanks! 虹易 (talk) 06:02, 16 August 2022 (UTC) There was a stupid typo. Fixed now!--虹易 (talk) 06:06, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

Added {{Documentation}} template to your template, create it by clicking the "create" link on top of the documentation sheet. Describe the parameters of the template and what the intended use of the template should be. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 06:50, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
@虹易: If you don't feel confident about documenting your template using the {{Documentation}} template, then I can fill it in for you. Otherwise it is your responsibility to provide informations on how to use the template. You'll however need to explain the parameters briefly to me so I can fill them in accordingly. Possibly through my discussion page or via email. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 06:57, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
@Polda18: Thanks for your kindness, Polda18. I think I can do that a few moments later. (Now I am struggling with testing my upload bot). --虹易 (talk) 07:00, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
@虹易: No problem. Lemme guess, the upload bot is related to the NLC stuff, right? Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 07:12, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
And according to the NLC list page you provided as an example of the template usage, I found some file links to be broken, the wikitext is shown instead of the (possibly) red link, and I may know why. File names may not support characters like ["$*|\]</^> as they have special meaning in the Unix and alike environment, so if you enclose some name in square brackets, then the link isn't going to work. I fixed it for you, they're now in round parenthesis. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 07:07, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
Ohh. I didn't notice that. It indicates I have to fix my bot which stopped jus right now due to "InvalidPageTitle" error. --虹易 (talk) 07:19, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
Does the bot work with the list page for uploading the scans? It would definitely help to first verify that all links that have been included in the page are actually valid (invalid links do not replace the wikitext with actual links, it displays as is, which is why template parameters in the template display on their own page break the links, the link in this form is simply invalid). Once you verify all links have been written correctly, and once you fix all broken links, then you can start the bot. Just a thought for future. Does that help you? Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 07:26, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
Yes. I will try to check the filename before uploading. (But I think it is easy to overlook, considering I have >> 10k files to upload.) The bot works with a JSON file dumped from a MongoDB. The list is generated seperately. And I frequently adapts the bot scripts if I see anything wrong, since NLC did not compiled their metadata properly with machine-readable patterns. --虹易 (talk) 07:36, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
Yes, developers need to solve these issues as well, where the API isn't properly configured for data extraction using an automated software. All right, I'm marking this case as solved. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 08:06, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

Can somebody please rotate my video

I uploaded File:Automatic robotic lawn mower Gardena Sileno City 250 in action.webm from my iPhone with correct rotational pose, just to see that in Commons it is turned 90 degrees. Can someone please fix it? I tried the VideoCutTool, but for me it produces a blo... mess from my file, hence I quit the try. Pittigrilli (talk) 10:04, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

Have you tried external app for the video rotation? It seems like Commons doesn't support rotational poses, which I guess is speciality of QuickTime format that iPhone is likely using (being an Apple product). You'll have to transcode the file manually using PC tools I guess. Visit Help:Converting video for more informations. Then if you think you have it, try uploading the new webm file to Commons as a new revision of the previous file, replacing it. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 10:24, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
I rotated it with a web service. Hence, this can be archived. Pittigrilli (talk) 11:37, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

Display bug

The "black background" display of pictures, e.g. at https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/ba/Firestone_Copse%2C_Isle_of_Wight%2C_England_%282%29.jpg, is no longer working properly in the Edge browser. Pictures used to scale to fill the screen, but now they are scaled much too small, so the picture appears as a small rectangle in the middle of a large expanse of black. I think this should be reported as a bug. I wonder whether someone with access to the reporting system could do this? ITookSomePhotos (talk) 21:18, 7 August 2022 (UTC)

Edge browser uses the same engine as Google Chrome, and it works fine in Chrome for me. The picture scales so it fits in its entirety in the browser window, so I do see black bars on the left and right (image in the center), but the black areas are nowhere larger than the image itself. I can even provide you a screenshot: https://ibb.co/RgX8ch2 Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 12:32, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
It works fine in Chrome for me too. However, it does not work for me in Edge, irrespective of what you say about engines. I would be grateful if someone else could check it in Edge also. Thanks. ITookSomePhotos (talk) 22:17, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
Same result. Maybe check your browser's configuration. https://ibb.co/kh0jLKg Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 08:01, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
@Polda18: Thanks for looking at it. Upon further investigation:
1) Sometimes when I navigate to the "black-background" view, by clicking on an image, I get sent to a URL of the type https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/01/Brick.jpg. In this case, browser scaling seems to be remembered and reapplied to all such pictures, even ones I have never viewed before, and even across sessions, while not affecting the browser general default, such as is applied when I open an unrelated website. (It's possible that one time recently I manually reduced the scaling on one such page, possibly inadvertently with Ctrl+Scroll, and then it affected all subsequent views.) I don't know whether this is a browser feature or a wiki feature.
2) Other times, I get sent to a URL of the type https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Bricks#/media/File:Brick.jpg. This view includes controls, and a panel at the bottom, which are absent from (1), and even manual browser scaling in this case does not actually affect the size of the picture, only the size of the controls and framing content
At first I thought I got (1) when logged on and (2) when logged out, but now I seem to be getting inconsistent behaviour, or unknown things are changing under my feet.
Anyone can shed any light on this? ITookSomePhotos (talk) 18:44, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Mapa General.pdf

This file was made by the Subsecretary of Transport of Chile in 2006. I credited the designers behing this map, but i don't know how to tag creative commons for this because the Chilean Goverment, as far as i know, doesn't have copyright in any of it's works because it's national information dejected by the transparency law.

--Calamardinho (talk) 23:47, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

  • @Calamardinho: I don't see anything here saying that the Chilean government generally waives copyright. Typically a transparency law just prevents secrecy, not government ownership of copyright. Can you point at anything in particular that indicates otherwise for Chile? - Jmabel ! talk 03:27, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
It would generally be a good idea to look at relevant copyright rules by terrirotry page, in this case COM:CHILE. Nothing about government issued works being exempt from copyright can be found there, so I would assume that government issued works are still copyrighted, and therefore not acceptable for Commons. Collective naming while uploading

I want to upload a series of images with names like IMG_20220730_133812.jpg that indicate date and time, but with the collective prefix Steyr 30 Loon op Zand as that is what they depict. As far as I remember from two years ago the upload form gave the option to add a collective prefix to the existing names, but now it bluntly refuses to advance to the next step as the current names are nondescript. I am *not* going to add the prefix and the categories 50 times, even less so as I have planned another upload of over 4000 files. I do however want to retain the datestamp, as it connects the files to my own archive.

Has the upload form been changed and what can I do to get this extremely unhelpful grumpy wizard to work form me? Or perhaps there are alternatives that work on my chromebook? → bertux 10:18, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

@Bertux: Hi, and welcome. Please see Commons:Upload tools.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:22, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
I tried Pattypan but I can't get it to work on my chromebook; perhaps it will work in Linux mode but I am not prepared to try that without guidance. None of the tools specifies for which operating systems they are suitable or tested; even on GitHub chromebook is rarely mentioned. Am I to try them all?
Anyway, the upload wizad should handle such basic tasks. Surely the current version is meant to scare off new users? Btw, I'm not a newbie and I didn't encounter this issue in previous uploads; as far as I remember, after inserting the prefix I was asked if all the files should get this prefix. Yes, sure! None of this now → bertux 10:48, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

@Bertux: Try COM:APP.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 17:21, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
Thanks! However my device is not compatible with COM:APP. (I should have said 'My chromebook runs about 40% of Android apps properly and another 35% with restrictions or bugs'.)
Btw, I tried COM:APP with my Android phone but most of the app interface disappears when I hit the + sign for starting an upload. It doesn't respond and crashes after a few seconds. Anyway, although it worked when I tried it two years ago on the same phone I found it rigid, clumsy and disappointing → bertux 18:16, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
@C.Suthorn mailed me about the Offroader app, thanks! According to the Play Store it is free and compatible with my phone and my chromebook but it has less than 10 users so I find it a bit scary to try this one. There is a paid version on Amazon for a whopping 54 dollar with a description of some features.
Offroader will accept the nondescript filenames so that moderators can rename the series in one swoop. (Does it work like that? Not wanting to add a lot to their workload).
Also it requests my Wikimedia password according to this description, apparently without using en:OAuth. Not going to try this one → bertux 10:25, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

Renaming before uploading

I will consider renaming before uploading. The Windows Explorer will add a collective prefix when you request renaming of multiple files at once and some zip-programs will add the mapname to the filenames. Surely some apps for chromebook or Android offer this feature too? → bertux 10:24, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

I will add a tip for users to use Powertoys from Microsoft devs, it adds number of features to Windows, including bulk rename (other than that, command line/terminal has to be used to bulk rename files, or making a script). Linux users should have a similar tool handy as well. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 11:14, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
You are right, MS-DOS supported collective renaming, not the Windows GUI. My chromebook has a Unix-like command line I remember, I will try that, thanks. Regardless, the Upload Wizard should offer such basic tools for uploading file batches → bertux 12:45, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
Linux (bash & co):
for file in IMG_*.jpg; do mv -i "$file" "Steyr_30_Loon_op_Zand_$file"; done
LPfi (talk) 13:42, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
Or perhaps remove the "IMG" at the same time (bash syntax for simplicity, the syntax highlighting seems not to understand "| sed"):
for file in IMG_*.jpg; do mv -i "$file" "Steyr_30_Loon_op_Zand_$( echo "$file" | sed s/^IMG_//)"; done

If you don't have bash, you might need to use "`command`" (backticks) instead of "$(command)" and some versions of sed require "sed -e" instead of just "sed". –LPfi (talk) 14:22, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

Newbie help request

Would anyone be able to help me? I have a >100 year old photograph of a battleship I am trying to add to the relevant page along with a very brief description. I have spent far too long going around in circles trying and failing to do this. It’s a relevant/ interesting photo from 1919 previously unpublished. Can anyone quickly do this for me as I have tried and failed many, many times. Thank you. Albidog (talk) 14:59, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

A photo from 1919 would *likely* be public domain in most countries. More info would help give a precise answer. What country was the photo taken in? (Different countries have different copyright law details.) Do you know anything about who took the photo - family, found photo, military archive? -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 15:18, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi. Thank you for coming back to me. The photo was taken by my grandfather in Italy in perhaps 1920. It is very unlikely to have been published anywhere. The glass negative recently came to light in his old house along with about 50 other photos of largely long deceased family members. I can send you a copy of the photo if you wish. Albidog (talk) 21:10, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
If you inherited unpublished photos from an ancestor (presuming no other close relative has a conflicting claim to the rights to reproduce the photos) you can license them for reuse as you see fit. Just explain the situation in the image description page. Licenses with templates you could use include for example {{PD-heirs}} to release to public domain, or {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}} if you wanted Creative Commons attribution. For example I've uploaded scans of some photos by my deceased ancestors under Creative Commons asking for attribution to "Family photos of Infrogmation" - if you preferred you could also ask for attribution to the ancestor's name, whatever you think appropriate. If you'd like me to take a look when you do your first upload, feel free to leave me a note on my talk page at User talk:Infrogmation. Thanks for your attention, and I look forward to seeing interesting photo or photos! Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 21:48, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
Many thanks again. Are there people in the Wiki community who would be able to upload the photo for me? I spent a few hours yesterday trying and failed miserably. My IT skills are non existent unfortunately. Albidog (talk) 06:53, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
@Albidog: Hi, and welcome. Are you able to email it?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 09:59, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi Jeff. Could you email me your email address please. Mine is cerijones@mac.com. I can then email you the photo and intended caption etc. Sorry I’m hopeless with this! Many thanks Albidog (talk) 15:23, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
@Albidog: Please see File:SMS Tegetthoff moored in Venice, Italy (1919).jpg and this edit. In addition, I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer post permission on their official website or social media or send the photo and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 04:14, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

More generally: for any given image, only the owner of the copyright can grant a license to use that image. That owner may be an individual or an institution. You can try to convince them to grant such a license, but you can't force them. - Jmabel ! talk 14:56, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

How could I upload my own work under Attribution only license

I do not like CC-BY. Cause it asks for a link to the license, which makes me uncomfortable. --Interaccoonale (Talk) 10:27, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

@Interaccoonale: Hi, and welcome. You may use {{Attribution}}, which redirects to {{Attribution only license}}.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:42, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
yeah, but I can not specify other license when using upload wizard. --Interaccoonale (Talk) 10:48, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
See Commons:Upload Wizard FAQ. There is also another option to use Special:Upload, which provides an everything at once interface to upload files. It is usually for more experienced users who know how to format the file description correctly and which licenses to choose from. Special:UploadWizard is usually for new users that may not know how licensing and uploading to Commons generally works, so it only suggests mostly used licenses to choose from. I'm not sure if you can specify a custom license tag, but I believe there is such option. Simply choose "custom" and fill in the license tag yourself. If not, then I guess you'll have to use the more advanced upload page. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 11:00, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

Uploading video demonstrating usage of the android Wikipedia app

This is kind of a bucnh of questions at once. I apologize in advance for that.

So I was hoping to upload a video of what an editing session/general interaction with the android Wikipedia app can look like because I've been working on an enwiki essay about the advantages/disadvantages of what using the app can be like and I wanted to be able to show a frame of reference for what it's actually like to use the app because not a lot of people actually use it. First, is this actually within the mission of Commons? I've never tried to upload video files before and while I know it's possible because I've seen some, but I'm hesistant because video is more resource-intentsive so I figured I should ask if there's anything I need to know first before I do so. The second issue is copyright status. Based off the answer I recieved in a previous help thread [4], I'm assuming I wouldn't upload the file as my own work and would link every page I visit as the source and choose Share-Alike 3.0? Also, I'd appreciate it if someone double-checked I did the screenshot upload right when I got around to it because this was the first time I tried to upload something that wasn't filed as my own work [5].

Also, is there like an easily accessible guide geared to Wikipedians or just like in general to figure out Commons-related stuff? Maybe I just have banner blindness or something but I don't want to be wasting people's time if I can figure out the answers to questions myself. Again, thank you to anyone in advance who tries to help me. Clovermoss (talk) 00:16, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

  1. @Clovermoss: This video sounds perfectly appropriate for Commons.
  2. It's your own (derivative) work; any pages you show need to be credited overtly and in accord with their license(s).
  3. I don't think there is any one special guide as against the collection of help pages, policy pages, etc.
As for File:Options to share a diff on the android Wikipedia app.jpg:
  1. A lot of those logos are copyrighted, unlicensed and therefore not appropriate for Commons. I'd suggest we replace those with Gaussian blurs. Let me know if you'd like me to do that for you. In any case, I've added {{Trademark}}, because that will apply even to the ones too simple for copyright.
  2. Your "source" doesn't make any sense at all. The picture is a diff, but your source is just a permalink.
  3. All images on Commons should have at least one category.
Jmabel ! talk 01:22, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Thanks for answering my questions. My line of thought for the source was that I should link to the page that I took the screenshot from... but I guess I didn't think about how it'd be better to just to link the diff itself? It seems more obvious in hindsight. As for Gaussian blurs, feel free to add them for me but I was wondering how I would go about doing it myself? I think in general I do add categories to what I've uploaded. So it seems like I've dropped the ball here on a few things. Clovermoss (talk) 04:04, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
I understand, that you want to create a video of using the Wikipedia Android App and upload that video to Commons. Most (all?) Android devices will record video(capture)s in mp4 format. You will need to transcode the mp4 file to webm. This can be done with video2commons, or with ffmpeg. The help page on video upload in commons shows the syntax for a 2 pass transcoding. The resulting webm file will be dramatically smaller than the mp4 as the transcoder can consider the minimal changes between frames of a videocapture. In general video files are large. Most ways to upload to commons have significant difficulties to upload files larger than 600MB-1.2GB. Files up to 600MB can be uploaded with any upload tool. Files up to 1.2GB will in most cases upload with one to five tries. Files larger than 2GB can only be uploaded with Rillke's script or Offroader. In the past it was no probem to upload 4GiB. 4GiB is the maximum size for Commons and that will not change for a long time. --C.Suthorn (talk) 06:46, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for some more specific details C.Suthorn. The video is around 600 mb, so I think that sizewise it should be fine given what you've just said. It's definitely in the mp4 format, so I'll work on converting it. Clovermoss (talk) 12:01, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

Cannot upload SVG (34.2 MB)

I'm trying to upload an svg of the global rail network to replace File:World railway network.png, as requested there. However, the Upload Wizard appears to be breaking. I already reduced the size from >60 MB but cannot go lower without compromising quality. It stalls out at the "Processing" / "Queued" point, on the apparent brink of completion, and does not progress no matter how long I give it. How can I fix this? Would an alternate upload system work better? Thanks for your help! Ganesha811 (talk) 17:26, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

Thank you for your help! The script did not work (it got stuck on waiting for the server to put together the chunks, appparently), but Special:Upload worked and the file is now available at File:World railway network.svg. I'm going through the category/licensing things now that Upload Wizard would usually help with, but if you could take a look to make sure I did it right, I would really appreciate it! Thank you. 18:05, 11 August 2022 (UTC) Ganesha811 (talk) 18:05, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
The file size could be significantly reduced. There is a large number of unnecessary spaces and white spaces. There is a large number of path tags with identical attributes. By using CSS and style attributes, the size could be reduced. Many numbers are of the format ###.#####. By multiplying all with 100000 the decimal point can be eliminated. And by using shorter identifiers there could be some more size reduction. --C.Suthorn (talk) 18:56, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
Feel free to upload a new version, for sure! I created it via export from ArcMap, but I'm not at all knowledgeable on SVG management in general. Or if you have tips on how I can reduce its size, that would be welcome as well. Ganesha811 (talk) 19:32, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
At least spaces and whitespaces can be removed with any text editor and find+replace. (same for CSS, but some knowledge of SVG+CSS is needed for that.) --C.Suthorn (talk) 20:43, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
Good tip, I was able to get it down to 6.22 MB and have uploaded a new version. Thanks for the suggestion! Ganesha811 (talk) 21:04, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

Subir videos

--C.Suthorn (talk) 22:20, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

Licensing Question

I found two months ago a very interesting picture which I want to use for my book's front page. I'm having trouble contacting the user, so I want to know if I need a written permission from the photographer in order to use it. Here is the link to the picture: https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lotus_maculatus-IMG_0397.jpg In a few words, I want to know if the picture's license grants me the right to use it for my book. Thanks! Avionvolador2702 (talk) 21:48, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

@Avionvolador2702: Hi, and welcome. In a few words, "no." You must follow the license, or negotiate with User:Christer T Johansson. Please see COM:REUSE.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 21:53, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
Ok, how can I contact User:Christer T Johansson?

@Avionvolador2702: to be clear: even without contacting User:Christer T Johansson, you can use it by conforming to the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license offered for that photo. - Jmabel ! talk 01:59, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
Thank you very much for clarifying the matter, I thought I needed to request permission. Great! I'll do it. Thanks again! Avionvolador2702 (talk) 02:34, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
@Avionvolador2702: — I was just about to make the same clarification as Jmabel. When Jeff G. said "No", I am pretty sure he was saying "No, you do not need written permission from the photographer" to use File:Lotus maculatus-IMG 0397.jpg. You can click the little "World icon / Use this file" to have the system generate the correct attribution for the photo that you will need to place in your book (probably on the same page you place your own copyright statement for the book). In this case the suggested attribution text is "C T Johansson, CC BY-SA 3.0 <https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0>, via Wikimedia Commons". So next to your own copyright statement, you could say something like "Cover photo © C T Johansson, CC BY-SA 3.0 <https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0>, via Wikimedia Commons". —RP88 (talk) 02:01, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
In addition, I should also mention, if you modify C T Johansson's photo to use on your book cover, under the terms of the Creative Commons CC BY-SA 3.0 license you must distribute your modified photo under the same CC BY-SA 3.0 license (or a compatible license). —RP88 (talk) 02:15, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
Perfect! Useful information, thanks for clarifying, I was thinking how to contact him, but now the process is more simple.
Thanks for your answer!! Avionvolador2702 (talk) 02:37, 12 August 2022 (UTC)

@Rejoy2003: The way Jeff worded that may be a little harsh but: most of what is on the Internet does not meet Wikimedia Commons' licensing criteria. Occasionally you may be able to get someone to issue a license that they haven't previously issued, but in general if you didn't take the picture yourself (or otherwise own the copyright), it isn't in the public domain, and there isn't already a sufficiently free license offered, it's unlikely that the relevant permission can be obtained. Copyright help regarding File:Jim McNamara headshot.jpg

Hi all, I am a graduate student at Emory University working on Epilepsy research. Jim McNamara is a epilepsy researcher that I admire and want to create a Wikipedia page and attach his headshot. I obtained the headshot from Duke medical school webpage (https://scholars.duke.edu/person/jmc). Is it possible I can use it for the Wikipedia page?

Sincerely, Thomas

--Fu Hung Shiu (talk) 01:53, 14 August 2022 (UTC)

@Fu Hung Shiu: The page says "©2022 Duke University " and nothing in Duke's terms of use indicates any free license. You would have to find out who owns the copyright of that particular image and get them to grant an appropriate license. Frankly, it's more likely that you could contact a Wikimedian who attends or works at Duke and get them to take an appropriate photo. - Jmabel ! talk 02:50, 14 August 2022 (UTC)

How to upload my musical audios and videos — Preceding unsigned comment added by Iffy kay (talk • contribs) 10:33, 13 August 2022 (UTC)

@Iffy kay: Is that about music composed and performed by you? Otherwise you will want to check that any underlying copyrights don't hinder you from licensing your files under a free licence. If other people's rights are involved, please tell the details – for us to be able to give some advice, probably after asking further questions.

Requesting Import to Commons from Japanese Wikipedia

Hello!

There is an image on Japanese Wikipedia that would be useful to me on English Wikibooks, so I'd like to import it to commons.

The file in question is here (File:Piece PME-001.jpg)

I'm pretty sure the licence is compatible (Dual CC-BY-SA-3.0 Unported & GFDL 1.2 or later), but the tool I normally use for importing local English Wikipedia local media to Commons appears to either be absent or something I overlooked. I'd appreciate some help with this as a result.

Thank you for your time and assistance! Mbrickn (talk) 03:10, 14 August 2022 (UTC)

Please trim a new commons drawing

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lady_Bryce_(nee_Elizabeth_Ashton).jpg

Please edit to get rid of the writing and just have the drawing - if that's possible. I cannot do it on this machine Thanks 49.198.41.28 03:50, 14 August 2022 (UTC)

I could do it (cropping isn't too hard), but I notice that there is a CC-BY-SA licence indicated, while the author is said to be unknown. @Srbernadette: Whom am I to attribute? Who licensed the image? The image is said to have been published in the USA in 1907, so out of copyright there, and if truly anonymous also out of copyright in countries with a term of creation/publication + 70 years. If the underlying image is not from the USA, it might still be under copyright in countries with a term of 70 years pma (which seems to include the UK), if the author was young and lived a long life (we assume 120-years-old works by unknown non-anonymous authors are out of copyright, and that would be in 2028). –LPfi (talk) 08:59, 14 August 2022 (UTC)

Category:Jackie Groenen is a subcategory of (among others) Category:Groenen (surname), which doesn't exist. Is this correct or should I delete that? Dutchy45 (talk) 06:11, 14 August 2022 (UTC)

This category is generated by the infobox through Wikidata. You can make this category by listing it in some other categories such as Category:Surnames. Ellywa (talk) 06:30, 14 August 2022 (UTC)

Press release or article from 1962 - only available in print

As references I would like to use a press release and an article that were only published in print. The material has been photographed. How do I upload such information that was previously publicised? LX-SIN (talk) 06:55, 14 August 2022 (UTC)

@LX-SIN: You might want to tell what countries are involved. If the article was signed, it is unlikely that its copyright has expired in countries with a copyright term of 70 years pma: if the author lived in 1952, it would still be under copyright. You might want to publish the material on a Wikipedia as fair use, but I think Wikipedia in English (which I assume you need it for) doesn't allow non-free files that aren't directly used in any article.
Another option would be to put the material on the net anywhere, if you find a way to do so legally. You might also be able to find the relevant article already published on the net by some archive. If you tell in what publication you found it (name, date and any other relevant info), somebody might be able to find such an archive. E.g. most Swedish newspapers from that time are in fact available.
LPfi (talk) 09:09, 14 August 2022 (UTC)
To use an article as reference on Wikipedia it doesn't need to be available online, but it sure is helpful to ensure it is and provide a link. Otherwise you might be asked to provide quotes or even to e-mail a copy. –LPfi (talk) 12:59, 14 August 2022 (UTC)
@LPfi Thank you for your guidance. Neither publication is signed. The press release is by a German state government. The article was published in a German professional publication and prints a speech by a state minister. Is there a chance to upload the material to Wikimedia Commons? Quality issues

Are there any standards for the minimum quality an image should have? In other words: Is a lack of image quality considered a valid reason to nominate an image for deletion? This one certainly is way below my personal standards for image quality. What do you think? --217.239.8.230 13:01, 23 August 2022 (UTC)

There's no definitive rule on quality here however generally speaking "bad quality" is a valid reason for deletion providing there's higher quality images of that subject available, If it's the only image we have then no it cannot be deleted. In this specific case I would say no that image shouldn't be deleted as the rest of the images there are also in very bad quality. Hope that helps, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 13:12, 23 August 2022 (UTC)
In addition to what Davey said, if the file is in use on other Wikimedia projects (as that one is), then it shouldn't be deleted just for being of terrible quality. This is codified at COM:INUSE. --bjh21 (talk) 13:23, 23 August 2022 (UTC)
O.k., thanks. My personal preference would have been to rather have no photo in an article than such a bad one, but if that's the standard, then so be it. --217.239.8.230 14:18, 23 August 2022 (UTC)
Whether to use the image is up to those editing the articles, but we will provide it for them to make the decision. If a better one is uploaded, we might mark the bad one as superseded. –LPfi (talk) 14:31, 23 August 2022 (UTC)

Updating Logo For College

We recently rebranded and have changed our colors from Green to Blue at Mesalands Community College. I have no clue how to get around the copyright issues and prove that 'we own' the logo. I tried adding our website as a source as well and that didn't seem to help. PeteyStampede (:talk) 15:27, 15 August 2022 (UTC)

@PeteyStampede: It looks like the old logo was not on Commons, just en:File:MesalandsCommunityCollege.png on the English-language Wikipedia on a fair-use basis. You can do the same with the new one. - Jmabel ! talk 18:25, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
@PeteyStampede: That should work.
Proving your ownership should be easy, the question is whether you want to license it as required, and whether you would have to negotiate with the author (designer) to do so.
On such updates in general: on Commons, we want to keep old designs, beside the new ones. If the Wikipedia article is reasonably long, perhaps they want to have also the old logo in it, but fair use is possible only for files in use, so if the article is too short for both versions, just overwrite. If somebody wants too, the old version can be resurrected from the file history.

File Upload

To Whom It May Concern:

I was wondering if my uploaded file (A.C. Kuma jpg) is good.

Thank you! Skuma81 (talk) 17:27, 15 August 2022 (UTC)

It is not very sharp, it is low resolution and the lighting is odd. Did you take the photo yourself, in the room together with Mr Kuma? It seems Johnj1995 thinks you found the image somewhere and photographed the image rather than the person (it's difficult to get good images that way, and such images are problematic copyright-wise). The file lacks categories, which would tell e.g. me who this A.C. Kuma is – and without the description mentioning his nationality, profession and the like, it is difficult for others who don't know him from before to add them. If there is a Wikipedia article on him, please link it. –LPfi (talk) 17:57, 15 August 2022 (UTC)

To Whom It May Concern:
The A.C. Kuma jpg file was sourced from a library archive (Ameyi Chambers), with no copyright issues. Prof. A.C. Kuma was a renowned Ghanaian lawyer, law professor, and philanthropist. He was a close confidant of Ghana's first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Ameyi Chambers was his law firm. I posted the biography in my sandbox for review and approval.

@Skuma81: How do you get from "no copyright issues" (whatever that may mean) to your claim when you uploaded this that you own the copyright and are offering a CC-BY-SA-4.0 license? - Jmabel ! talk 02:33, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
I am not sure what you mean. It must have been an error or miscommunication on my part. The source was subsequently corrected. Skuma81 (talk) 02:43, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
@Skuma81 at the file description page you wrote "Author Skuma81", which means, that you were in the same room with Kuma, had a camera and released the shutter of that camera to create this image of Kuma: You are the author. If what you write on this page is correct, then you gave this image to the Ameyi library (in 20212 or earlier, es the EXIF tells it was scanned with an Apple coputer in 2012) and now took it from the Ameyi library (so you either did not transfer the copyright to the library, or it was transferred back to you by the library) and uploaded it here. Still you state, that you took the photograph in 2022 (ten years or more later than shown by EXIF) and use an inexistent template for the Ameyi library as source. For the file not to be deleted the Ameyi library will have to send a permission to VRT (it is your task to ask the library for the permission and to explain to the library the steps to send a permission to VRT. It is also your task to create the template, if you want to use it and to correct the date in the information template) C.Suthorn (talk) 07:20, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
(Link to the sandbox biography: en:User:Skuma81/sandbox. –LPfi (talk) 08:44, 16 August 2022 (UTC))
I think the crucial part is what you mean by "sourced from a library archive (Ameyi Chambers), with no copyright issues". Has the copyright to the original photo expired? Has the archive acquired the copyright and licensed it with a suitable licence? I assume you are not the photographer and that you are not in a position to licence the photo, so the description needs to be corrected, but that's trivial as soon as we know the facts. It is a pity that the Apple scan wasn't better quality, but I assume you'd need to go back to do or ask for a better scan to correct that problem. (I don't know from where C.Suthorn gets the Exif data, exiv2 shows "No Exif data found in the file" and the link here on Commons shows nothing useful). –LPfi (talk) 08:56, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
The picture is part of a family album. Prof. A.C. Kuma was my dad, who passed away about ten years ago. The picture was taken at his home library. He was a renowned Ghanaian lawyer, law professor, philanthropist, and a confidant of Ghana's first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. I am also waiting for the biography to be reviewed and approved.

Commons omit part of the MetaData. A small portion is shown by default, some more can be made visible (on the description page). In the database is more (may be all of EXIF, IPTC and XM) and can be queried with the API. In case of video files, commons only showrs audio and video encoder versions, but adds much more (i.e. copyright, author, title fields) to the database. --C.Suthorn (talk) 11:22, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

@Skuma81: From what you have described, there is no way that this photo lacks a copyright. I'm pretty sure that in Ghana, as in most countries, copyright exists automatically from the very fact that a picture is taken, and it is certain that copyright on this picture would still be in effect. The questions are:

  1. Who took the picture? That person would be the original owner of the copyright.
  2. Was the copyright ever transferred? That would typically have to happen explicitly: simply transferring the image does not transfer the copyright.

At this point, due to the confusion so far, in order to keep (or restore) the picture, we would need to go through the process outlined at COM:VRT, where the copyright owner starts an email correspondence with the Volunteer Response Team to clarify the situation. If that copyright owner is someone other than you, have them cc you on the correspondence so you can follow what is going on.

Also, it would be a lot better to have a better copy of the photo, and would also be important to have the {{Information}} template filled out accurately (e.g. the correct date of the photo, as accurately as can be determined). - Jmabel ! talk 14:56, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

Problems uploading a file

I have been trying to upload an image I took at a music festival, but each time I go to publish, I get a message that the file had failed to upload. The image was my own, I accepted all the conditions, gave it the appropriate licensing, captions, etc. but the image failed to publish/upload with no explanation. I'm sure this is covered somewhere in the archives but after a quick look it seems there are thousands of pages of them! I was attempting to use the Upload Wizard. Thanks for any advice. BrianFG (talk) 04:44, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

Uploading another Palestinian flag

There seemed to be a edit war between the lighter colours of Palestine, and the darker ones. Everyone was debating on the file and changing it to lighter or darker colours. So I thought of making another version with darker colours, so that the normal version can stay unedited as the lighter version. Can I do that without going against the rules? Is that allowed?

While I'm at it, if I can do that, then why not rename the lighter version to Flag of Palestine (lighter colors/colours)? Kxeon (talk) 13:33, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

  • @Kxeon: "Can I do that without going against the rules? Is that allowed?" => Not just allowed, but encouraged.
  • But normally we don't rename existing files unless the name is meaningless, actively incorrect, etc. This does not meet those criteria. - Jmabel ! talk 15:02, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
Just made the new file! Should I also make one for the lighter version or not? My brain is debating with itself on what to do here Kxeon (talk) 15:49, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
Like, I could leave the the current version alone, considering that's the one with the lighter colours, but I could also make a new file while adding (lighter colours) to the end of it, which I feel may be a good decision because leaving the old one alone may cause people to think that that's the correct version or something due to it not having anything after it like what Kxeon (talk) 15:52, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

Radio masts

What's the right category for Category:Radio masts, please? Highly surprised to discover that this doesn't exist at all, not even as a redirect... - MPF (talk) 21:06, 15 August 2022 (UTC)

We have Category:Radio towers, which redirects to Category:Antenna towers and masts. --rimshottalk 21:22, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
@Rimshot: Thanks! I've made Radio masts a redirect to it, but it seems an absurdly cumbersome and counter-intuitive name that a lot of people will have difficulty finding (just as I did!) - MPF (talk) 21:30, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
Apparently, there's a distinction between masts and towers, and the category tries to be inclusive for both. I agree that it's counter-intuitive, but with the redirect in place, it should be easy enough to find. There was some discussion at Commons:Categories for discussion/2012/01/Category:Communications towers before creating the category. --rimshottalk 19:18, 17 August 2022 (UTC)

Olivia Newton-John images

Hello. Please can someone revert these images of Olivia Newton-John to their earlier non-blurred versions. Many thanks Polyamorph (talk) 14:23, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
@Polyamorph: The background of the images was blurred by request in Photolab. The fact that you did not like my work should not be a reason for rudeness. PawełMM (talk) 17:44, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
@PawełMM: next time don't do that! The changes you made affected over 20 different wiki's. In future upload the blurred version as a derivative work so that it doesn't cause such disruption. Polyamorph (talk) 18:18, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
@Polyamorph and PawełMM: Let's not stay mad about this incident. The image edit was clearly done in good faith, and the primary issue was that it was done in the wrong way, which had undesirable results. I think it's clear now how to technically do such things in the future (make a derivative, so the major change isn't automatically propagated). With her recent death and all, it's understandable emotions can get heated. But I'm pretty sure no one had an intention to attack you personally, PawełMM; at least I had none when I called the blurring "absurd". I was only criticising the work (and more specifically, it appearing seemingly out of nowhere during an ongoing vote), not the person (and in all honesty, my own attempt at a blur would have looked pretty similar ^^). --LordPeterII (talk) 18:22, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
Absolutely, the issue here was that the image was in-use across multiple wiki's. This needed to be fixed quite urgently and some of us (less familiar with commons as we work on en-wiki) didn't really know what was going on. I absolutely agree PawełMM was acting in good faith. My comments about the blurring were not intended in anyway to disparage your work. It's fine to have a blurred version, but just not replacing the current image. Cheers Polyamorph (talk) 18:33, 17 August 2022 (UTC)

Template:F11 Museum

Hi, Template:F11 Museum allows diffusion of images to sub-categories but retains the museum main category in every image. I have tried editing the template to remove the category elements and purged the cache without success. I tried removing the template from images but that blanks the image details. Hopefully someone can edit it to change its behaviour or point me in the right direction, many thanks. Nimbus227 (talk) 09:05, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

  • @Nimbus227: The first version you tried should work. A lot of updates have been lagging lately. Also, things like this often require at least a "null edit" on each relevant file page.
  • If you apply this, though, you are going to want to make sure you get that museum main category onto any "leftover" images, otherwise this becomes more of a negative (no longer easily found via categories) than a positive (remove overcat). - Jmabel ! talk 16:07, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

How to fix "Found unsafe CSS in the style element of uploaded SVG file." error?

I attempted to upload an SVG file using the upload wizard and was given the error "Found unsafe CSS in the style element of uploaded SVG file."

I googled this issue and found some people saying font was an issue, I removed all text from the file and tried again but was given the same error. What do I need to do to fix this issue?

Thanks :) ProfAuthor (talk) 15:32, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

You can keep the text, but you will need to remove the CSS that calls a font. It will look something like "https://..../...ttf" if it is a ttf font or any other font fie format. C.Suthorn (talk) 17:31, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
How can I view the CSS of the file? ProfAuthor (talk) 10:35, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
Just open it in a suitable text editor, one that either doesn't try to be smart or is smart enough. General-purpose editors targeted at programmers are the best, but any that shows the content and has a search function will do. –LPfi (talk) 18:29, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

@.polishcatsmybeloved: I requested file renaming as per an obvious error criteria. Also, please, see COM:SIGN. As of the map, I found another copy, which does actually have division borders and names in it: File:Map-of-Vietnam-Divisions.svg. I also changed the old language templates for {{mld}} and added Czech translations into the file descriptions. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 07:25, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

How do I fix this error?

  • @Hossein.1386.jamshidi: It might work after a reboot, but if your machine really doesn't have enough memory, there isn't a lot we can do about it. - Jmabel ! talk 16:09, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
    • Not that we can do, but some computer expert could find a way. There really isn't any need to use a lot of memory even if the file is big. It can be read piece by piece from the disk, but you would need a programme that does not waste memory. –LPfi (talk) 09:01, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
@LPfi: I can confirm. A file can be read piece by piece, which is what hexdump does to print out contents of a binary file. It can read a file that is couple of GB in size, and not run out of memory a single time. And it isn't a very difficult task to do yourself, once you know a little bit of C programming and the core concept of the program. I did a simple Windows port of the Linux tool hexdump (simple in a way it's actually not the whole program, but rather its core functionality), all without looking even once at the source code of the original. And it only uses few kB of memory, even if it reads a file that has 100 MB. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 09:55, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
The problem is to get that program to communicate with Commons' upload API. Does commons accept a client that just dumps a file over the TCP connection once it has sent the http headers? You also need your client to communicate over https. I don't know how involved the setup procedure is, but you certainly want to use some existing library, or a tool which can accept a stream on STDIN and send it over https in suitable chunks. –LPfi (talk) 18:23, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure that uploading the file through chunked upload is going to fix the issues. And for the record, most modern browsers use chunked upload by default. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to upload big files over the internet if the file size exceeds the available memory, it would cause memory overload and possibly crash the program or system. National flag of the United Kingdom

United Kingdom needs to be added to Category:National flags by country, but Category:National flag of the United Kingdom, the obvious item to add, is empty/unused, referring instead to Category:Union Jack. I don't want to add Category:Union Jack to Category:National flags by country because the country may not be obvious to international readers. What is the best solution to this? I did originally add Category:Flags of the United Kingdom to Category:National flags by country, but then I took it out as it seemed anomalous compared to the others in the list. ITookSomePhotos (talk) 10:18, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

I don't know why Category:Union Jack exists, is that a nickname to the flag of UK? If it is, it would make sense if the redirect was the other way around. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 10:35, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
The national flag of the United Kingdom is the Union Jack, also known as the Union Flag [6] Polyamorph (talk) 10:38, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
And no law, according to English Wikipedia suggest that it is an official name. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 10:45, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
Plus, as it has been stated, there is an issue with international recognition. Not everyone knows that Union Jack refers to the national flag of UK. I didn't know that, eighter. What I suggest is swapping the redirect so Category:Union Jack redirects to Category:National flag of the United Kingdom, not vice versa like it is now. That obviously needs files in that category to be moved to the other category, but that's something a bot can do once the redirect is swapped. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 12:26, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
That seems a good idea, but there are several derivative categories that also include the term "Union Jack" (see subcategories at Category:Union Jack). Could we cater for all tastes by naming the main category "National flag of the United Kingdom (Union Jack)" or "Union Jack (national flag of the United Kingdom)"? ITookSomePhotos (talk) 08:52, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
That would probably be good. The first name would be ideal as most people will search for the flag under the country's name and not immediately under Union Jack. So if Category:Union Jack is now the main category, it would make sense to rename the category to Category:National flag of the United Kingdom (Union Jack) and then make {{category redirect}} from Union Jack to National flag of the United Kingdom (Union Jack) (and of course correct the Category:National flag of the United Kingdom redirect to the new name). Then it could be added to the parent Category:National flags by country. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 08:59, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
OK, I have added a "move" request at Category:Union Jack, so hopefully someone who knows how to rename categories safely will do to that in due course, if there are no objections. ITookSomePhotos (talk) 16:44, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

Is Wikimedia Commons being systematically archived anywhere?

Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask this. Is Wikimedia Commons being systematically archived anywhere? Or is there any commitment by the Wikimedia Foundation itself to ensure long-term access to content uploaded to the Commons? Wzhkevin (talk) 12:29, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

I'm not sure of what you mean. You mean like an internet archive for deleted files? No, of course Commons doesn't archive deleted content for public access. It does for a limited period of time for undeletion request (usually up to a year), but deleted files are kept private without public access until the undeletion stasis period ends, then the files are deleted permanently, freeing space for new files. Files are usually deleted for being out of scope or because of copyright violation, which obviously are valid points to remove access to those files on Commons. Some deleted files might end up on Internet Archive's Wayback Machine, but you should note that Wikimedia has no affiliation with Internet Archive for archiving contents on Wikimedia sites and such archived files might be a copyright violation. It may be reasonable to ask Internet Archive to remove all archived snapshots of deleted media on Wikimedia Commons, especially if the media is a copyright violation. All other files are stored publicly long term and even file history is provided if the files are updated at some point, so you can view all history of the files themselves, granted all revisions do not violate community guidelines of Commons (out of scope, unwanted update, copyright violation, etc.). So pretty much every file you can see on Commons is permanently stored if it follows community guidelines. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 12:39, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
Some of that is not quite correct: On a technical level, files are (with very, very few exceptions in extreme cases) never actually deleted, they are just hidden from the public. That means that 1) files that were deleted in, say, 2007 can still be undeleted today by any regular admin and 2) deleting files does not free up storage space in the slightest. El Grafo (talk) 13:36, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
Well, doesn't that however quite violate the copyright of some files deleted for obvious copyvio? It would make sense to impede some sort of time limit to request undeletion. A year is pretty long time to do so, there's really no reason to assume that uploader will notice much later than after a year. As for files that may enter public domain at some point (and therefore could potentially be undeleted some time later), is it really worth it to keep a file that will remain deleted for decades? Many of copyright violations are files that have been released recently, or their author is still alive, or their author has died only recently, which in many cases means 70 years before the file enters public domain. I'll ask you this question. Can you see Commons or Wikimedia itself still being available in 70 years? I would be glad if it was (though I wouldn't have much use of it then - I would be eighter dead already or still alive, but probably sucking meals through straw at some elder home with other fellows, just waiting for the inevitable), but we can't be certain. I'm not sure if it really makes sense to keep files that will enter public domain decades later for undeletion. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 08:21, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
@Polda18: Every year, on Public Domain Day, Admins undelete files which have just entered the Public Domain due to age. They have been doing so here for 17 years, and on enwiki for 19 years. I intend to facilitate that practice for as long as is possible and practical, on this named project or an heir or successor project, even after I have left this mortal coil.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:40, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
Not quite sure what you're looking for, @Wzhkevin. The Wikimedia Foundation runs several redundant data centers in different places of the world [7]. Database dumps are being made available on regular basis, but they do not contain the media files. I'm not aware of any external archive or our media files. El Grafo (talk) 14:09, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
One obvious reason to keep an archive outside WMF is for the possibility that WMF goes crazy or gets a legal mandate to shut down immediately (i.e. on too short a notice to organise any saving of the files). Better safe than sorry. The needed storage space makes it unpractical for most individuals to keep a backup of Commons (100 M files, if the average size is 4 MB that means 400 TB (+backups etc.). –LPfi (talk) 19:27, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
@Wzhkevin and Polda18: The WMF made a commitment that the content is available as long as possible, possibly forever. For this reason, there is m:Wikimedia Endowment. Yann (talk) 11:33, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

Request file be moved to an existing name

I have modified a figure which contained a single letter misspelling to resolve discussion on a wiki article. My account is too young to replace the file as would be the desired action for such a minor edit. The error message I received stated I should ask at the Help Desk to have someone "...move your file to the name you want". The original file that should be replaced is "PORV_closed_piston.svg" the file name I uploaded because I could not directly replace that file is "PORV_closed_piston_v2.svg". The discussion indicating that this correction is accurate and desired can be found on the talk page of the article "Pilot-operated_relief_valve". BJHat (talk) 05:13, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

You can't upload a new file to a conflicting file name hoping it gets replaced. Replacing a file with a new version is done using a revision upload, which you can find below at the end of each file description right below the file history. If you click "Upload new revision of this file" where I stated you'll find it, it will ask you to select the file you want to upload to replace the original file with it. Not to mention that the typo was already corrected by the uploader.

Hi, and welcome. — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 17:49, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

Patent images published after March 1, 1989

Hello, I noticed that the images of the Dihedral synchro-helix actuation doors are credited to Kartsriv, but these images actually come from the patent US2019/0218838 from Koenigsegg. It concerns the following files:

Now that we know the correct author, the question becomes whether or not they are public domain. The template {{PD-US-patent}} states: In general, the contents of United States patents published prior to March 1, 1989 are in the public domain in the US. [...] Patents published after that date are most likely copyrighted, unless in the public domain for another reason. The patent in question was published in 2019. So, should these images be removed? The name of my fathers coast guard ship

I would like you to verify my information. My Dad's name was Salvatore John DeFazio. He served in the Coast Guard during World War II. His ship was in the Atlantic Ocean. I'm afraid you've posted your request to the help desk for Wikimedia Commons, a collection of freely usable media files to which anyone can contribute operated by the same non-profit foundation as Wikipedia, so you probably won't be able to get an answer to your question here. However, the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration has a page Request Military Personnel Records Using Standard Form 180 describing how your father (if he is still living) or you (as his next of kin) can use a US SF-180 form to request your father's military record, which might include which ship or ships he served on while in the Coast Guard. Your local VA or other veteran's organization might have someone able to assist you with making this request if you have additional questions. —RP88 (talk) 01:07, 21 August 2022 (UTC)

I am co-chair of the Python Software Foundation Trademarks Working Group. The email for contact with the WG is psf-trademarks@python.org. This inquiry concerns the trademarked Python logo at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Python-logo-notext.svg.

There is a problem here, but it is slightly nuanced. When viewed as SVG, the image shown is correct. The information page contains a link to the PSF Trademark Usage Guidelines, which is perfect. It might be worth adding the link to the FAQ at https://www.python.org/psf/trademarks-faq/ as well. Use of the mark is not unrestricted, but in general our usage policy is very broad and permissive. We definitely like it to be on Wikimedia Commons.

However, whichever software you use to render SVGs to PNGs at various resolutions produces inaccurate renderings. In the case of the Python "two snakes" logo, this is most noticeable in the gap between the "snakes" in the logo. Our use policy is strict about maintaining the outline shape, although we allow changes to color or adjacent or interior visual elements (subject to permission from the Working Group).

Unfortunately, this means that a number of well-intentioned users that we know of—and almost certainly many more that we do not know of—have downloaded the rendered PNGs from Wikimedia, and used them in the incorrect rendering in contexts that are otherwise nominative and permitted. I'm honestly not sure what the best approach to addressing this issue is. Do you have an infrastructure in place to turn off the rendering to PNG, and only provide the SVG? Or possibly simply additional notice on the page indicating the concern I indicate would mitigate the issue.

Please let us know. I'll keep an eye on this page, but emailing the WG at the above address would be even better.

It seems there is little the uploader can do, but rather something affecting our infrastructure. I assume the PNGs are automatically rendered by the Mediawiki software and I don't know of any way to stop it or change the rendering parameters for an individual file. A temporary workaround might be to replace the thumbnails with correctly rendered ones, but this may be tricky as they exist only in a cache. A bug should be filed. –LPfi (talk) 06:57, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
My colleague and co-chair of the PSF WG, noticed that the SVG available on Wikimedia only uses 2-3 digits of precision within the SVG file. However, the version directly available from the python.org link uses 6 digits of precision. I'm not sure whether this difference contributes to the difference in rendering accuracy, versus the underlying rendering library used or other factors.
I'm certainly able to provide a version of the SVG that is trimmed to the logo only (i.e. without the accompanying "Python" wordmark in the image). I'm not an expert in graphic tools, but it was not difficult within Inkscape to delete the word and shadow elements. The version I obtained doing this retains 6 digits of precision.
David Mertz (Memories of lost time (talk) 15:19, 21 August 2022 (UTC))

Note: I believe I have resolved the issue. Apologies for my limited knowledge of graphics format and the quirks of Wikimedia. I uploaded several iterations in quick succession, which looks odd in the history. But the version of 15:50, 21 August 2022, which shows a nominal size of 115x126 appears to render correctly both as SVG within Wikimedia, and when rasterized as PNGs.

The first couple uploads I made, rendered with the right edge cut off, although the full image was shown when viewing the SVG alone, or in Inkscape on my local system. To work around this, I added a small right margin to the bounding box in the current version. The right margin does not need to be used by authorized reproduction, but I felt that a little whitespace was less bad than truncation, since different rendering contexts are possible.

Removing large space inbetween categories

Hi, So I use the "perform batch task" feature to remove redundant cats, unfortunately doing this has resulted in this (a large space in between categories) - Is there a way I can remove this large space preferably with said feature?,

  1. @Davey2010: In the future, for the cats you are removing, remember to do a newline before <nolink>[[Category</nolink>.
  2. At this point, your best bet is probably to use the same tool to map four consecutive newlines to a single newline. Since it will only affect files that have four consecutive newlines, it's harmless to run it on a pretty broad set of files. - Jmabel ! talk 01:26, 21 August 2022 (UTC)

Copyright Tag for Non-Copyrighted Material

@Graywolf1980: I'm afraid we're going to need some more information to answer your question. Who created this sound recording? Has this sound recording ever been previously published with permission of the creator? If you did not create this sound recording, are you able to obtain permission from the creator (or, if they are no longer living, their heirs)? You mention that you've uploaded this recording, but I can't find any audio files uploaded by your account on Commons or English Wikipedia. Where did you upload this sound recording? —RP88 (talk) 02:06, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
I haven't finalized the upload yet, since I'm not sure on the copyright status. The person who recorded this gave a cassette copy to the local school library in the 1990s, and this is where I transferred the file from. It's not music, nor is it even speech, so I wasn't sure on which one to use. To my knowledge, it has never been published or copyrighted. The school no longer knows how to get in touch with this person or even if they are still alive. I'm going to pause and look into this more before I continue with uploading. Graywolf1980 (talk) 02:54, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
@Graywolf1980: Unfortunately if this sound recording was created after 15 February 1972 and it has never been published it is protected by US copyright and the term of the copyright expiration is life of the author + 70 years or 15 February 2067, whichever is later. We're going to need permission from the creator of the sound recording, or, if they are no longer living, their heirs, in order to host the file on Commons. If you do manage to contact the creator or their heirs and would like to upload the recording to Commons follow the procedure at COM:VRT to provide evidence that the copyright holder has given permission to publish the sound recording under a free license. —RP88 (talk) 03:21, 21 August 2022 (UTC)

I have tried to upload this image below I made this (below) using https://textcraft.net/ which allows you to use the images you make with it to be used on social media, this probably includes Wikipedia userpages, but bruv, it won't let me because it used WIkimedia Commons, it is for my damn userpage, I am very familiar with MediaWiki as I have my own wiki, I just wanna know why it will not let me upload my flipping image.

Below is a link to the picture.

  • Were you logged into an account when you tried to upload? Because you weren't logged in when you left this message.
  • Also: you linked an account User:DragonsBeathUP2 but used text to make that say "DragonsBreathUP2" (note the difference, "Beath" vs. "Breath") which is really confusing. - Jmabel ! talk 18:32, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
Ok, I did it on Wikipedia editing a sandbox where I would copy and paste it into my userpage, I made the text logo using a website that lets me use it on social media including wikipedia user page. 86.29.220.255 18:48, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
The cross-wiki upload filter is kind of picky. I assume the file you were trying to upload was File:DragonsBreathUP2Userpage.png, which is small enough that the filter assumes it is a "web size" image off the net. Try logging in and using the upload link in the left margin here instead (Special: UploadWizard).
(Logging in before posting and linking the filename (as I did now) makes it much easier to find log entries, please do that next time. The user name with the "r" does not exist, I assume it was a typo.)

Can't load my svg file

Hi all! I have been making the map for 4 months, and now I have completed it and started uploading it here. I waited 5 minutes, and then Dikwarehouse writes that "This file did not pass the verification procedure." At the beginning of the download, he gave me that this file was already downloading. Tried again - same result. Resaved my file as "plain SVG", tried again - same result. What to do? Tell me please.

P.S.: I want to upload this file in svg format in any case, so that everything is beautiful. The file weight is 239 MB, if that matters.Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 08:11, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

Please note Commons:Maximum file size. Uploading this file should be possible with Commons:Upload Wizard. Ellywa (talk) 08:19, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

@Ellywa: Au contraire, the maximum the Upload WizardSpecial:Upload supports is 100 MiB. @Пётр Тарасьев: I suggest you use User:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js (doc at User talk:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js).   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:02, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
The Wizard supports in principle up to 4GiB. The original upload of this file: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Politparade.webm&oldid=337593636 was 3.07 GiB with Upload Wizard. Today the Wizard is not likely to upload anything above 1.2GiB. C.Suthorn (talk) 12:46, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
@C.Suthorn: Sorry, I was thinking of the Special:Upload limit. However, bigChunkedUpload provides vastly more feedback than the Upload Wizard.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:54, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

@User:Jeff G.I exported this SVG file to a PNG file via Inkscape. I got a PNG file weighing 343 MB. I started uploading this file to Wikimedia Commons. And I managed to download it! Further buttons open in the Download Wizard. So it's not about the file size! And in what? I don't know...Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 15:23, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

Uploading photo from WikiCommons

Hi, Is it possible to upload a file from Wikimedia Commons? If so, does it necessiate providing any specific descritpion? Orangetheworld (talk) 14:08, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

@Orangetheworld: Assuming that by "upload" you mean reuse it elsewhere, the answer to your first question is "yes, you can": files here are all intended to be reusable. License terms vary, so without you specifying what file, there isn't a lot I can say to answer your second question, other than that the relevant information should be on the file page and any licensing pages it may link to. - Jmabel ! talk 15:18, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

How to show proof

Hello, I want to upload a file and I want to show proof by showing an email that says I can use it, I was wondering how I can do that? Thanks WikiCommons. Yours Truly, BettyCrocker321 (talk) 20:14, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

@BettyCrocker321: If you are not the author, but have received permission from the original author to upload the file to Commons under the terms of a free license, you can follow the procedure at Commons:Volunteer Response Team which basically involves having the author email an appropriate permission statement to the VRT volunteers. —RP88 (talk) 20:39, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

not so much of a question as statement

none of the licensing advice or rules in this site regards stuff like this, but historical photos of my own ancestors of which i am nearest enough of posterity to be the exact guy in the family theyre called the family historian, then yea regardless which source I found it I have more intellectual property right than the source, especially in regards to servicemen kia without direct descendants. Don't make me start citing the specific laws i know the interpretations thoroughly...--mister covert Darealcovert (talk) 21:08, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

If you meant to say "photos by my own ancestors" I think you are right. However, in case "photos of my own ancestors", you are not owing the copyright. Ellywa (talk) 22:02, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
Expanding on what Ellywa said: copyright of a photo belongs to the photographer, not the subject. If one your relative (A) took a picture of your relative (B) and you are the heir to A's intellectual property rights, then you own any persisting copyright, and can upload with a license such as {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}. And the situation is the same if A took a picture of anyone or anything else. However, if someone else (C) outside your family took a picture of B, then barring the unlikely event that you are heir to C's intellectual property rights, you may very likely own a physical copy of the photo of B but, no, you don't have the copyright: C's heirs do. - Jmabel ! talk 00:17, 23 August 2022 (UTC)

Hello, I just want to make a request to you that I hope the uploaded photo on wikimedia commons will not be deleted because that photo is really actually from Facebook and I got it from the photo of Jovelyn Galleno and because the photo I made is blurry, I used an enhancer. I uploaded the picture but after a few hours someone notified me that this picture I uploaded is copyrighted, I would like to get rid of it just for the article page of "Disappearance of Jovelyn Galleno" who mysteriously disappeared in the Philippines. @Wazzup Carl: "Facebook" is not an adequate source. There needs to be a link to a particular URL, and the owner of the copyright needs to specify a license that is compatible with Commons. I'd be very surprised if the photo is licensed by the owner of its copyright (but feel free to prove me wrong); this almost certainly needs to be deleted. - Jmabel ! talk 14:54, 24 August 2022 (UTC)

Guys I need your help. I'm kind of new to Wikipedia I created my account with Yuriikanalosh user name I thought I was creating an article. Yurii Kanalosh is the birth name of the person I was making my article about. I don't want to have any trouble with my article in the future because of my user name. The only reason I'm creating my article because I think this article should exist on wiki to help people find true information about that artist. I also uploaded some images of that artist I marked those pictures as my own work. I do not own those pictures. English is not my first language and wiki for beginners is a bit confusing.I waited for my article to be published for 4 months it was approved but then deleted I think because of my user name and pictures I uploaded. Someone thought I was getting paid or I'm the person in the article. Please someone help me change my user name and delete these pictures .

Okay to upload photo of newspaper front page from 1964?

I have taken a photo of the front page of a North Carolina newspaper from 1964 that features a photo of First Lady Ladybird Johnson. Is it okay to upload this? Oldyeller64 (talk) 01:47, 24 August 2022 (UTC)

@Oldyeller64: No, that would almost certainly be in copyright. Are you familiar with the Hirtle chart? If not, it's probably worth a look. - Jmabel ! talk 03:17, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
Considering the present glut of online newspaper archives, the OP doesn't provide sufficient context for someone to investigate this on their own. It "would almost certainly be in copyright" if the individual issue failed to contain copyright notices? My read of Hirtle is that blanket copyright protection is a more recent thing than 1964.RadioKAOS (talk) 04:56, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi Oldyeller64. During that particular time period, I believe that only print advertisements were required to have separate copyright notices. Photos and other copyrighted content used in printed publications (e.g. newspapers, magazines, books) was (I believe) considered covered by the copyright for the publication as a whole. Moreover, it's also possible the the photo did not originate with the paper itself, but instead came from wire service. The paper, therefore, could have been using the as part of some agreement it had with such a wire service, but that agreement might not have included a transfer of copyright. Since this is a photo of the First Lady of the United States in 1964 and First Ladies often make public appearances that attract media coverage, it's possible the same photo could be being used by multiple newspapers (perhaps even international papers) covering the story (whatever it was). So, without knowing any more about the en:provenance of the photo or at least know what the photo is, being simply from 1964 isn't enough to say this is OK for Commons. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:46, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
The photo is of the front page of a special edition of the Hertford County Herald designed for people to hold up and welcome the First Lady during her visit on the Ladybird Express train. Except for the masthed, the entire front page is a cut out, posed photo portrait of Ladybird surrounded by the text "HOW DO LADY BIRD" in 120 point bold type. The photo may have been from the wire but looks more like a White House handout. At the time, the newspaper was published by Parker Bros., Inc., which was my grandfather and his brother. Oldyeller64 (talk) 01:45, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
Without knowing more about the en:provenance of the photo, it's hard to say anything definite one way or the other. However, Commons policy requires the uploader of a file to clearly establish it's acceptable to upload to Commons per COM:L; in other words, it's responsibility of the uploader to convince others that they're right and not the responsibility of others to prove the uploader wrong as explained here. Borderline cases tend to be deleted per COM:PCP when there's a reasonable doubt about the photo's licensing. If you can show that the photo was taken by an employee of the US government as part of their official duties and that the photo was then distributed to various media outlets, then it's quite possible that could be within the public domain as explained here. Photos taken by other people can be trickier to sort out because it's generally the person who takes a photo who is geenrally considered its copyright holder and not the subject of the photo or someone who possess a physical copy of the photo. Photographers working for a newspaper might have had en:work for hire type of agreement with their employer which meant the paper owned the copyright of the photos it used, but some photographers might've retained total or partial copyright ownership of their work (e.g. retained the negatives of their photos). Are there any old newspaper archives or anything else online which shows the photo and how it appeared in the paper? -- Marchjuly (talk) 14:41, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

Uploding an image is not succesfull

For the wiki article "List of Protected Areas Regional Offices of Thailand" I made maps using "OpenStreetMap" and roughly maps of national parks and wildlife sanctuaries from official Thai government, which is permitted by Thai law {{PD-TH-exempt}}.

@Andrew4351: Please send an email as explained in COM:VRT. When you have done this, please add a line of code to the file page of File:Логотип факультета журналистики МГУ.png. Where it says |permission = you need to add {{subst:PP}} behind the = sign and save the edit. Our volunteer response team will then validate the file and mark it as approved. Another important step is that you grant a free licence for the logo such as {{Cc-by-4.0}}. All uploads here at Commons need to be free for anyone to use for any purpose. The licence should then be stated on the file page, too, where it says Remove this line and insert a license instead. De728631 (talk) 13:28, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi 45BearsFan. You might want to take a look at this and this before uploading anything you find online to Commons. @CRARTE: Hello. You did everything as it is supposed to be. We don't overwrite old images with totally different files, nor do we delete "outdated" versions. Instead we keep the old files for documentary reasons, and new images should always be uploaded under a new file name. However, if you only made small changes to an existing image, you can overwrite the existing file: Look at the bottom of the "File history" section where there is a link called "Upload a new version of this file". Also, please sign your posts to discussion pages like this by typing four tilde characters ~~~~. This will automatically add your username and a time stamp. De728631 (talk) 15:11, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
Edit: After reviewing your upload, I think we can merge the two files under the old name. The changes are small enough to have the two images in one upload history. I will arrange that. De728631 (talk) 15:13, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
The latest version is now available at File:Flippin Garage (historical).jpg. De728631 (talk) 15:22, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
On that note, how is this historical photo your "own work" as you claim in the description? Unless you are the original photographer, you can hardly grant a free licence for the photo because you don't hold its copyright unless you are the photographer's heir. I don't need to ask them. Only 3% of the population of France actually spoke French at those times. There is English and French content. I can't find any other nation or tribe other than the Germanic tribe of where this started. Sinking into reality (talk) 01:21, 27 August 2022 (UTC)

@Sinking into reality and Jeff G.: If the content is all over 200 years old, and it's from France, I can't think of any way there could be a persisting copyright. The only question is how best to indicate the status. I'd say that the combination of {{other date|before|1790}} (or an earlier date, if you can determine that for a particular image) and {{PD-old-70-expired}} in lieu of a licensing template is pretty safe. Someone may have a better suggestion than that last template, though. - Jmabel ! talk 02:00, 27 August 2022 (UTC)

Svg-file optimization

Hello! Could you advise me? I made a map in svg format and it turned out to be 239 MB, I started uploading this file, but the Wikimedia does not accept it because the file does not pass verification. I further began to understand, ran this file through svg-checker. There are a lot of errors in the file. I later realized that I was using fonts that were not accepted by the Wikimedia Commons servers. Hence two questions:

- How can I find out the entire list of fonts accepted by the Wikimedia Commons servers?

- How can I optimize my file (remove redundant, metadata, etc.)? Preferably in Inkscape itself. Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 11:08, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

Answers:
  1. List of all acceptable and supported fonts for SVG renders on Commons and anywhere else is at m:SVG fonts,
  2. To optimize an SVG file, first make sure that paths and other objects are optimized (therefore simplify paths that could be simplified while retaining original shape - less vertices placed so the original shape and the simplified one are visually identical), and don't save the SVG as an Inkscape SVG, but save it as a plain SVG. Inkscape will complain about the file not being saved when closing the editor, but that's okay. Further optimization could be done with removing unneccesary white spaces (empty lines presumably), and removing metadata that only have informative characters or are otherwise unused in the document and do not define any kind of shape, pattern, gradient, etc. that is used by some object in the document. Unused patterns, gradients shapes or objects entirely outside the document boundaries can be removed from the code. SVG files are actually just XML files, which are in plaintext format using XML markup language to define shapes. So SVG files can be edited in plaintext editors, for syntax highlighting I recommend using Notepad++, VS Code or Sublime Text.
Hope that will help. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 11:08, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

I've just put this article in wikicommons in the section "imagies" in this webpage https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocche_di_Civitella

cat question

Hi, So recently I've been removing Category:Dennis buses in the United Kingdom and Category:Alexander buses in the United Kingdom from images where the vehicle has been identified (Ie Category:Alexander ALX400 on Dennis Trident 2 buses in the United Kingdom) - the ALX400 category are aleady subcats at the Alexander and Dennis categories

However I've also been removing Category:Double-decker buses in the United Kingdom from images as the specific bus identification category is already there and going to for instance Category:Alexander ALX400 on Dennis Trident 2 buses in the United Kingdom will have at the bottom "Category:Double-decker buses in the United Kingdom" however because these Double-decker categories aren't in the actual images - Am I doing viewers more disservice by removing the Double/single deck categories from images or would everyone know what a Single and Double-Decker bus is ?

I hope this makes sense, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 18:56, 28 August 2022 (UTC)

How do I add an updated version of an image that is ShareAlike in copyright?

I see others have added to an image the changes and updates they made...but I can not figure out how to do it. I uploaded the image with the original copyright info, but got an error message. I really just removed the background on 2 images, and want to upload the new version under the same image/copyright, but I can not figure out how to do that, sorry. Laura Ladyp22 (talk) 23:56, 24 August 2022 (UTC)

@Ladyp22: If you removed background, you almost certainly should not overwrite the original image. You should upload your image as a derivative work. You don't indicate what image, or say what license it is under, but many licenses require that derivatives be clear what was the original author's work versus your own.
Typically, uploading a derivative work like this is easier with Special:Upload than with the UploadWizard. You can copy-paste from the existing file page to Special:Upload and make the appropriate edits before activating the upload. - Jmabel ! talk 01:06, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
That is: click edit as if you were to edit the wikitext on the file description page, copy all, use Special:Upload to upload your version, paste the content you copied into the to be description of the new file and edit as appropriate. You should at least change the source to {{Derived from|filename of the original}} and tell in the description the changes you made (or do the equivalent by other means). You should link your file from the other_versions field of the original file. –LPfi (talk) 14:08, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

Sorry, I got the template syntax wrong above. The problem with your upload was that the licence wasn't given as a template and the bot that posted the message doesn't recognise the licence as free text. I hope the file is fine now. –LPfi (talk) 16:45, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

Portrait of Margaret Thatcher by Russell Bradley

Hi, I am an artist and my name is Russell Bradley, I painted Margaret Thatcher in 1992, evidence here below.I would Like to upload a photograph of me and margaret thatcher from the unveiling. I can be seen in the Thames news video with her so it can be cross refrenced. Would be nice to get some recognition after all these years as an Artist who was comissioned to Paint Lady Thatcher. I would apreciate any help Thank You.

Hello. You would need permission from the original photographer to upload the photo here under a free licence. This is usually done by the copyright holder sending an email as explained in COM:VRT. Once the email has been sent, you are free to upload the photo here and add a remark {{subst:PP}} on the file page. That will mark the file as "permission pending" until the permission email has been processed and approved by our volunteers. De728631 (talk) 16:40, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
PS: Ideally, the photographer should also mention in the email that Commons user Raptapmap aka Russell Bradley painted the Thatcher portrait. De728631 (talk) 16:43, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi ,Thanks for your input, but this was 30 years ago, The people involved are Dead. I was given a photo of Margaret Thatcher and myself standing infront of the portrait by the charity who commisioned me to paint her. The news paper articles give my name and the thames tv news coverage has me in it with margaret thatcher. The photo is from the event. All the info is there for a significant event to be loged in to history. But of course only if anyone is interested in actuly looking at the info.
Thanks again, I shall just have to keep having people say to me, you did not paint Lady Thatcher, wheres your proof, Look at this video, well they do not mention your name, no they were far more interested in giving Margaret Thatcher a hard Time as you can see in the video, so I show them The independent, oh they say it says Russell Bradley. Then I say look at IMS. it has more information there. Then I show them my news paper clips from The Telegraph and the Daily mail.https://www.artmajeur.com/en/russell-bradley/presentation#images-2
https://www.artmajeur.com/en/russell-bradley/presentation#images-1
Why is it not on Wiki they say, thats an historical painting, and you went to the SLADE and all thoes other artists who painted her are.
Thanks again and sorry to go on but I thought I would give the Margaret Thatcher painting recognition, one last try. Raptapmap (talk) 20:25, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
@Raptapmap: if you still own the copyright of the painting (haven't transferred it), and want to upload your own photo of your own painting (or anyone else's photo that is simply of the painting) here, that's not a problem; just go through the COM:VRT process yourself. I'd say that one on IMS Vintage photos would be OK (no creative element in the photography) even though it's not a very good photograph.
But for anyone else's photo/video they took of you, they own the copyright (or have transferred it, possibly to heirs), so it's their (or their heirs' or assigns') permission we would need.
If the issue is simply citing this in Wikipedia to prove that the painting exists, there is no need to have a copy on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 03:43, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
Thanks so much, you nailed it , I just need to get it cited on Wikipedia, Thanks again. I wish i knew how lol <IP redacted> 07:56, 28 August 2022 (UTC)

@Raptapmap: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user. — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:35, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi Jeff G. I will just deleat the 2 new additions to the sandbox page, and I think just give up. but thank you for letting me know, Have a great day Raptapmap (talk) 16:15, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
If you didn't transfer the copyright to the painting, there is no problem in your licensing a photo of it as you like, but please provide a photo with decent resolution. The filter for cross-wiki uploads is kind of picky, so you might want to use the upload wizard on Commons instead of using tools on Wikipedia (click the upload link in the left margin e.g. on this page). You might need to follow the instructions on Commons:VRT to confirm that you are the copyright owner. It seems the press image page has got it wrong, as I don't see how the painting would be out of copyright. –LPfi (talk) 16:56, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
Thank you so much, for all your kind interest and Help with this page, I am a bit confused, so I changed the wikipedia page back with the two photos. I am so glad their is a sandbox, so if it breaks any copyright someone can just deleat it. As far as I understand, If I painted the painting and its a photograph of the painting then its ok, Only the Independent keeps online records of its newspaper that far back, so I was luky to be able to cite it. The Daily mail is a paper clipping which I think is like some one taking a photo of my painting and having copyright. so if i took a photo graph of the cliping i have fro 30 years ago I think that is ok. but I do not know for sure. But thanks againto you dedicated People. Raptapmap (talk) 18:04, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

classification list change inquiry

Question: I've seen a photo described as 'wiki list of gay actors' floating around the internet for some time. It looks legit and is supposed to be from around 10 years ago. There are a lot of names on it - "200 pages out of approx 946 total." But when I attempt to search up the same list today I get one with only a small fraction of these numbers. 99 pages only - just one name under "J" for example when there previously were 18. Numerous names have been deleted. No record of all these apparent deletions anywhere I can find. Was there some massive re-do of this content which is not chronicled in edit history anywhere? Or were all these people potentially 'outed' against their will in the first version? Curious Freesonemaven (talk) 00:11, 31 August 2022 (UTC)

@Freesonemaven: Hi, and welcome. Where exactly did you find it?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 01:12, 31 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi Jeff & thanks. I'd attach a screen cap here but don't see anywhere to do so. It has appeared on a number of Hollywood gossip chat boards and social media outlets - the point being that some actors were once listed there as openly gay but later removed their names when electing to closet. I was most surprised by the massive decrease in overall volume (ie, not jus one name removed but seemingly hundreds), which seems really strange. Freesonemaven (talk) 15:20, 31 August 2022 (UTC)

Vimeo Video question

I was searching for CC-BY videos of director Irvin Kershner on Vimeo (https://vimeo.com/search?license=by&q=Irvin+Kershner), and I came across this one. Thing is, the video is a clip for a film, so it has a different kind of page. As you can see here, it doesn't have a "More" tab like most Vimeo videos, which contains the licensing information. So, I decided to put the video link through an HTML code viewer, and see if I could find the license indication that way. Sure enough, I found this:

Is this good enough to allow video screenshots from this on Commons under the CC-BY 3.0 license like the search and code show? JamesTheLaptop (talk) 21:43, 31 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi @JamesTheLaptop, Personally I wouldn't upload the video/screenshots - Despite the CC hyperlink within the coding and despite the filters listing this as a "CC-BY" IMHO given there's no symbols or text on the film page itself actually stating this is CC licensed I wouldn't upload it, CC is implied but for me it's not stated. Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 12:45, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
I don't think this is good enough. Most people won't look into the HTML source code of the page to read license, and browsers currently do not automatically display this information based on this meta tag. Sufficient license should be visibly placed on the video page itself, which means that meta tag stating the license isn't sufficient enough as it's not visible on the page. If you want to use the clip, I guess the best option for you is to contact Vimeo about COM:VRT, politely explaining this situation and ask them to send license confirmation to an email address stated in the VRT page, with a carbon copy to you. If the license isn't immediately obvious from the page or from additional resource that is visible somewhere, VRT is the way to go. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 13:24, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
