Info This artwork was made by Giacomo Raibolini, aka Giacomo Francia. He was the son of the more famous artist Francesco Francia, well known as a goldsmith and painter and a close friend of Raphael. This is an author belonging to the mannerism of the late Italian Renaissance. The exact date of the painting is not known, but it can be attributed between 1520 and 1540, when it was influenced by the painter Dosso Dossi, another mannerist tending towards the Venetian Renaissance. This picture is important because shows a Mannerism offspring from the Italian Renaissance. It is worth noting the resemblance of the Saint Sebastian depicted with his [father] to whom he was extremely devoted. The artwork was imported from Google Arts and Culture stitching 7880 tiles. I have applied a slight crop to the right bottom corner, so that what I believe is a feather star (black thing), is not on the way. Even if that could be an improvement, I don't see what is wrong with the crop, morays live in holes and rarely go out during the day as they are nocturnal predators. I also have to say that this animal is rare, and probably that's the reason why we have no FPs of the whole genus. Support The whole moray would be be too big to fit in the image, so I will assume the author meant to only picture its head. The crop is fine. The black thing is mildly not distracting. I have little doubt after reading the same words I used "Infortunate (sic) crop" in my review. That's an statement that doesn't speak for the reviewer. Again, we have no FP of the genus Echidna, but we have already 4 FPs of the species (not genus) Himantopus himantopus. I've definitely supported more images that I've opposed of El Golli Mohamed, so I have no personal issue here and no problem with the photographer, let alone free-license photographers. If I'm convinced, I support the image if not, I oppose, that has nothing to do with whom is behind the camera and in most of the cases people believe that and are thankful for the feedback. Oppose It might have been a very impressive view. Probably everyone has ever visited the world through the window of a plane, and thought "wow, these illuminated clouds are so dreamy from above". Unfortunately, the pictures are seldom extraordinary, due to the thick layers of glass between the camera and the subject. Hazy landscape in that case, and dull colors are probably the result of the material. The redtoothed triggerfish species is usually 50 centimetres (20 in) long and live in the widespread Indo-Pacific Ocean and Red Sea in a depth between 3–35 metres (9.8–114.8 ft). The normally feed on zooplankton or sponges. They are also known to be carnivorous and can eat many different types of animals such as krill, clams, squid, urchins, and small fish. Comment The problem of this picture is not the subject. Visit the top prizes of photojournalist competitions in famous newspapers and you will find many striking images of this kind. Comment I come back to my old standpoint that a really good encyclopedia needs good images for all articles, however distasteful they are, not just cute or nice things. Cruelties need to be shown correctly too. This photo is good in that it shows how bleak, colorless and depressing this kind of destruction is. Compare with what the news show from Gaza and Ukraine. I don't think anyone here would vote in admiration of this. There can also be a "wow" in the very accuracy of an image. There is a language barrier here in thinking that "wow" is only defined in a positive way. There can also be "wow" for the skill off the photographer to capture something difficult very accurately. Comment Just some info about this place. Fårö is known worldwide for its stark, desolate and minimalist limestone beaches. This photo captures that perfectly with the simple fishing huts and one lone person. This is where Ingmar Bergman lived and made many of his films. He came to the island when he was scouting for locations, fell in love with the place and stayed the rest of his life. Photographer's comment: He was one of the first citizens of the town and is one of its leading citizens, owner of the general store, president of the bank, and owns a cotton mill nearby, and a farm. He is a big land owner, owns Whitley-Davis farm and a cotton mill in Clayton. He said he cut down the trees and pulled the stumps out of the main street, and was the first man in that town of Wendell.

You are asking about the Letters and signs? I don't know anything about them. The Arabic numbers were written on each stone for reinstallation. The historic wall (part of an old railway bridge) was demolished to build an new bridge with a new wall. Instead of removing the red link, it should have been created to enhance the educational value of the file. The timestamp for the light and everything seem totally fine to me (perhaps a bit underexposed), considering how low and weak the sun is up here in the north in winter. Compare with this taken at 12:20 at roughly about the same latitude and the same number of days away from the winter solstice. This is the light we get at noon for about three months each year (no wonder we invented Nordic noir ;-) ). People often marvel at our midnight sun here in the summer, but rarely think about the other side of the coin: the midday darkness in winter. Oh didn't know, thanks for clarifying and wonder why this has been clarified only now since my rationales on my votes from yesterday were based on that and would have been easily refuted with this info.
It's a bit confusing to have so many different kinds of nominations (FP, MOTD, POTD, quality image,...) so I think maybe all of this should be clarified succinctly (e.g. with a small diagram) at the top of the pages (like the FP candidates page and note that the "Featured pictures" page has no info on POTD but shows the day on the right). I thought it was called "featured" picture because it was "featured" on the Main page and that if not added there right away it would be featured there sooner or later. These dots are invisible to the eye. They appear due to the high level of detail. Some of them are part of the painting, some of them might come from the velvet frame around. The painting may also be slightly locally deteriorated at this scale, since it is 138 years old. Removing these elements to rejuvenate the painting is of course possible, but I think that this would alter the reality of the work, preserved in its current state. Especially on the face, eyes and lips. From my point of view, these are natural dots, that are an integral part of the object. Info In short: photographic art as described. In long: Explaining photographic art is certainly not easy, but I can say something about how it came about. The motif was a tree trunk with a varied structure - with different shades of green and brown. This tree trunk was photographed using the "Intentional camera movement" technique, so that the corresponding movement effect was created. The direction of movement of the camera was parallel to the tree trunk. The exposure time was chosen so that the structure of the trunk was still preserved. (It was only an exposure time of 0.6 seconds, so not too little and not too much). In post-processing, the image was edited so that the contrasts were emphasized and at the same time the colors were made a little more saturated. The resulting image was the basis for the image shown here. In the final step, the image was duplicated (in 2 layers) and one layer was mirrored in order to achieve the symmetry effect. In w:The Snow (poem) the photographer (you) added a random image to the article to decorate it, without even the caption "artist impression" - misleading to readers and I would be surprised if the image stays in the long term. The same applies to w:Rhombus and I am not sure how lax Wiktionary's policies are for image placement but wiktionary:light at the end of the tunnel is a real stretch. Saying an image has potential for Wikimedia usage is a slippery slope, see this deletion request. You can argue that if an image scrapes into the Scope, and people think it is pretty then we feature. This has ramifications though, for example now someone wanting to learn about a rhombus will get this "postmegasurrealism" image as a top suggestion. Commander Keane, thank you. I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this point. You are taking the hardliner approach that only exact images should be used in articles. There are many like you here, but I am of the opinion that articles that deal with abstract subjects can also benefit from having images, and often more abstract images are better suited for this purpose. Artists are often called on to illustrate texts about non-tangible subjects, although you call such practice "to decorate" an article. Articles on Wikis etc. are not scientific papers, even though many editors do their best to turn many of them into such, but are supposed to bring knowledge to as many people as possible. And often, an image can help to make an article more accessible and distinguishable from other articles. You can view each article the same way you view a book. A hundred years ago, a book on an abstract subject looked like this, while this is what a similar book looks like today. Commander Keane, no, the image was created outside the WikiProject and only uploaded and nominated here when the new gallery for creative photography was added. I do a lot of "outside the box" images, and they have met with mixed receptions here. I was actually totally flabbergasted by how well that photo was received. I often browse FPC, WLM, WLE, etc. looking for good images to pair with articles on the projects. Mostly images by others, but sometimes mine. I think that when the community has put so much work in weeding out good images, it would be a shame not to put them to use somewhere. I also update articles with what good images I can find. I had come across the poem by accident some months before my photo was promoted, and since people seemed to like the picture and it was in tone with the poem, I thought it might be ok to pair the two. My edits may be bold, but they are free to revert (as I sometimes say in the edit summary) and I do abide by such decisions, and never edit-war to keep the images I suggest. So far, more have been kept than reverted. Whether it is easy to create or not is actually irrelevant. An FP does not always have to be complicated to create. In any case, experience plays a role in the effort involved, which is also impossible to estimate. In any case, the focus here was on the idea and the photos were taken on the basis of this idea. Info The rather tinted paper was definitely pulling this image down, as well as some bleedthrough and a fold line (with some mirroring across the fold line). Also, it wasn't actually the largest version available at the source, but I think that's an uncontroversial sort of change, even for an FP, so I just updated it. It has nothing to do with "the box" but rather with the fact that underwater colors fade and with the lights I use (which causes shadows depending on the subject or POV). One day I'll publish a before - later comparison of images taken in raw and the result after processing (with special focus on WB). Neutral I see the problem. The image needs that sunlight from the curtain to express the emotional feeling connected to the cats attitude. After you changed the exposure the effect is gone and the curtain look unnatural. But without your changes it looks as there was a defect. There is absolutely no background processing. I was lying on my stomach and used a low DOF to give this result which allows to isolate the bird very well from its environment. c) focus is not bad imo nor the composition. Focus is on driver number 64 in the middle of the photo and you have to open the images in full resolution to find that the drivers around are slightly out of focus
d) and no one outside Wikimedia Commons judges the merits of sports images by open them in full resolution.
Well, quickly, 1) You're welcome, a) When time is limited, try to frame larger during the action, then you'll have all the time to crop afterwards, b) The crowd is fine, no worry about that, c) we disagree about the focus. Depth of field could have been more generous. We could also say that this is what makes the difference between an ordinary photo and a great one. At thumbnail size, the biker at the left is already blurry. So that's not very appealing. d) Not sure, but anyway here it's Commons :-) Otherwise there would be a bunch of fair candidates, too, at smaller resolution. e) Yes, high resolution with limited DoF. Just a clarification. There was no time to switch between lenses/cameras and Nikon's superb 70-200 was a reasonable choice of lens imo. There were hundreds of motorcycles so some motorcycle or rider will always be cropped regardless of focal length. And without a zoom lens, the picture would (in my humble opinion) be much more boring. I personally think that one of the picture's strengths is that you get so close to the riders. On another way, it's a blurry image (foreground AND background), except when you zoom in :-) Then you think "oh, this rider here is not out of focus". But alone in the crowd. Comment I must say, I'm delighted how well ArildV has been able to capture this event. We've been missing good photos of this big sport event for years now. The reason for this, is that it is actually really hard to photograph. The race is held in the beginning of winter, and often coincides with the first snow. The light is therefore extremely bad (part of the race is made in darkness) and the bikers are moving very fast; that's the challenge for the photographers. Adding to that, it is also mostly damp with temperatures just above freezing at the track and mud is flying everywhere. Support The sea slug may not seem very sharp at first glance, but comparing other photos I doubt that it can look sharper – most parts of this creature’s surface are obviously rather smooth. Looking at photos with lower exposure, I also cannot spot additional details in the bright part. Therefore it seems not unfavourable that the bright parts of the sea slug are very bright in this photo, and I really like how the creature seems to shine here. Neutral I'm a fan of this type of illustrations, but the hyperrealism might be counterproductive. Some animals blend into the background and are hard to distinguish without zooming in. Yes it's not perfect. The background is important so I think one is only supposed to glance over the animals which are only examples to enable a rough idea and it's sufficient that one can properly see them even though they are a bit hard to distinguish from the background at times. There's not much like it in the Commons, it helps illustrate several Wikipedia articles otherwise lacking images and is a rare and educational interesting image. The concept itself already is quite valuable but the artistic execution and the overall implementation is still more than worth featuring even when not perfect (which other complex-subject comprehensive FP things are?). Would be good but it doesn't reduce the quality or accuracy dramatically I think and people could add it. It would be best if image project files like XCF could be uploaded but here one could simply add things on top (this way one can't remove things, move things, or alter the background however which is why I meant to request this feature at some point and think I've seen it discussed already somewhere). I don't think this is much of a reason to nonsupport or oppose the image instead of e.g. a weak support and the file could be improved at a later point. 💡 Info There was wind, that's why some leaves are moving. It's not a matter of depth of field. Whites are correct in my view. It is sunny. All the white parts should be white, not gray, and there are not blown highlights in this picture. Main subject is the building. In focus, with consistent depth of field and wide focal length (24 mm), taken at the distance. Increasing the depth of field by reducing the speed would result in more motion blur for the leaves. Support Beautiful and well-done, the three-quarter view gives probably the best possible impression of the temple. I also agree that the technical settings are very reasonable – at 24mm FF, ƒ/8 is certainly the best choice because it gives enough DoF and avoids diffraction (which with today’s cameras and lenses is already visible at ƒ/11, of course). Given that ISO 50 helps to reduce shot noice, it is a solid choice, too. This is a photo of the temple, so we want the best possible quality in that part of the photograph; and most of the foliage is still more than sharp enough. Would be better but it's high resolution and how is that a reason to oppose? FP has tons of images not even 2% as useful and/or widely used as this illustration so why are the standards suddenly that it has to be perfect in every technical way? The image is high res and I don't know if one can just make an SVG of such a detailed image. Is there any criteria that requires illustrations to be SVGs?
In any case I come to think FP is more a problem to the project than anything else because it has tons of mundane images and facilitates more of them while not including images that are actually educational and highly valuable (as long as it's not renamed to "Featured photos" or similar). Good points, I think it is well FP-worthy despite not being perfect. Would be good if you could specify what you mean with CA. I think the font size is chosen so that the texts fit there rather than having the same font size and adjusting the image around it. So I think none of these are truly a problem except that the lines shouldn't be white as they are hard to see. It would be best if a new version was created with other line colors and maybe a few larger fonts, both of which can be implemented by anybody. Photos of mundane birds everybody has seen a thousand times are better than a heavily use actually-educational illustration about something that is relatively unknown and exciting. FP have absurd selection of featured pictures, these are ~always both noneducational and boring. It is one of the best diagrams created by Commons users and I don't see an issue with it. Other FPs are also not perfect, just great but maybe I should just start voting oppose very often because the whole thing is a joke and some kind of technical photo competition rather than in lie with COM:SCOPE. And your rationale is not strong since you didn't even mentioned a reason nor what would be better if recreated. FPs should work with what there is in the commons, not have low standards for photos and extremely high standards for actually educational illustrations. The image is 2,704 × 1,386 and 2.5 MB. The size certainly isn't a problem, it's very large.
From Stone Age – The period lasted for roughly 3.4 million years[1] and ended between 4,000 BC and 2,000 BC and dogs were domesticated around 15 k years ago. So the rationale at least is objectively false but not entirely sure what you mean with and assume with "representative for" there. It might very well be a pretty painting, but it is a fantasy version of what the Stone Age might have looked like. It was made long before any modern archeological science had begun, so if there was a good photo of it, it could be nominated as just a painting and not as something that we should put forward as to what the age actually looked like. If you want a painting to represent what the era looked like as in "realistically depicting ancient society", I don't think this is the one. Stone Age people only had dogs for 1.17% percent of that period (at the end of it), so it's bit of a stretch to have this representing the era. It would be like having how things looked in 2023-2024 representing all of the last 2000 years. There is also a guy who looks like he is blowing a horn. The oldest musical instruments found are from 60,000 BC, so in the same ballpark as the dogs.
If you compare it to most of the other paintings that are promoted now, you'll find that it is indeed quite small. And with the off-center doorway/whatever and very poor technical quality, it's not enough for FP. --Cart(talk)22:28, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just makes it more explicit that you seem to confuse Featured Pictures with Featured Photos even despite that there is a gallery type for nonphotographic media and that I linked it above. Nobody is assuming or stating it's a totally factual entirely accurate representation. I used that word realistically only in my support rationale, not in the nomination. Maybe one could clarify that this is showing a scene at the end of the stone age. If you look at the gallery for which this is nominated all or nearly all of them are how people imagined things. Maybe it's problematic that it isn't much informed by modern science and that one would need to attach text to clarify that if anything it would be toward the end of that period. However, this does not represent the whole era – maybe you think so because of the title but I was not suggesting that title was somehow displayed (at least without the explaining text). What matters is not the details but more general things like them being next to a cave, but the aspect of this being how people in recent history imagined humans in the past is also relevant. It's not clearly false and if it was it should be contextualized anyway. Also maybe the file should be moved from "aus der Steinzeit" to sth like "der Steinzeit" / "Imagined scene of the late Stone Age (1885 painting)". Its certainly higher than I would have liked, but I was shooting on wet rocks, covered in algae, at the edge of the inlet. Any further and I may have not been able to climb back up the Jetty. Yeah. I was in good light, shooting at a low ISO and a reasonably high shutter speed, so I could have gone to f/8 without having a detrimental impact on the image. But it is a solid black duck, except for the interesting features on the head, especially the unique scoter bill and white eye. Thank you for the support! Support A very impressive view of this harsh landscape. I agree that the small white line or halo effect at the mountain edge could be sorted to improve the image further. But I would not call the image overprocessed. Darkening the sky and brightening dark parts of the landscape is an established part of photographic practice; people have already done this in the time of film photography, either by combining several negatives in a single print (like e.g. in this famous photograph) or by applying paper masks, dodging and burning during the exposure of the print. Just like HDR the goal is to reproduce the extreme dynamic range of the reality within the limited dynamic range of a photograph. The assessment should be guided by the question whether the result gives a realistic and appealing impression or not. Oppose Quality is not quite there, in my opinion. High dynamic range would have helped. Also taken too early, in my opinion, with the sun quite high, for a contrejour. Very harsh white spot. The sky is not really special, and the clouds have no shape. The grass lacks sharpness in my view, and the colors seem oversaturated or deteriorated. The picture seems heavily processed, probably to lift the shadows, but it has an impact on the quality. There is CA at the top of the trees. I don't have any issues with community-rating them as high-quality or even "Featured picture", I just oppose them being featured on the Main page, the rss feeds, and the Wikipedia app. Most of the images on the page I think would be unsuited for these three things, however many also show special things that may make them worthy of FP since they are not about the person but the peculiarity of (e.g. the activity of the person etc) the image such as those:

Prototyperspective, It is WMC that supplies the different Wikipedias with images, images of all sorts of subjects (including people), and it is on our interest to show what really good images should look like (including portraits of people). This is how we set standards for excellent photos: through examples. No images here are promoted simply for being on the front page of Commons, they are all selected because they are suitable for the different Wikipedia projects. And as for getting on the Commons front page, is in fact rather uncommon for a portrait to end up there since there are about ten times 365 FPs promoted each year. I think that your notion about people on FPs, is at the wrong forum. Comment First I do not vote for an image because I want it to appear on the main page etc.; IMHO that’s a minor matter. I vote pro/contra images in order to help to select the featured pictures. Second, maybe there are millions of high-quality portraits, but (it’s a pity) only very few high-quality portraits with a free license – browse Wikimedia Commons and you will see that 99.9% of our portrait photographs are of low or modest quality. Third, after reading about Mia Farrow and browsing photos of her, I have the impression that this photo is a very fitting portrait that matches her character. Hi - the art clearly depicts two subjects, the camel and the woman, with text in Arabic (granted, I don't know what it says). It follows a clear artistic theme and color scheme and is an example of art from its locality, which might be notable in and of itself. The photo also shows a (subjectively) interesting window design, plus that architectural feature on top. Then photos of non-low-quality graffiti showing simple things like a few colors and a human at mediocre quality in some style should also readily become FP. Are there stats for how many graffiti photos there are among the FP? With nothing in particular I was referring to a meaningful subject, not simple color aesthetic, a woman and a camel, and ornamentation as the content. I wrote the rationale before I learned that not all FP so things are a bit different now but the conclusion remains the same and the other rationales are more than unconvincing (e.g. nonexistent). This venomous sea snake is found in tropical Indo-Pacific oceanic waters and it spends much of its time under water to hunt, but returns to land to digest, rest, and reproduce. It has very potent neurotoxic venom, which it uses to prey on eels and small fish. On average, the total length of a male is 875 mm (2 ft 10.4 in) long. Females are significantly larger, with an average total length of 1.42 m (4 ft 8 in). Note: there are no FPs of this genus and only one of this family (a captive snake). I also have to say that taking this picture was not safe. The snake came from behind and was heading to me while I was taking pictures somewhere. Luckily my fellow diver warned me. Support The animals are in their natural environment, they are practicing common daily activities of their species instinctively, they seem to be an undefined genetic variety with larger than usual ears, which catches my attention. I think it must have been difficult to take this photo due to the rapid movement of the cats playing and running around. Oppose This image isn't very sharp and the grass obstructs much of the lower subject without adding to the image. It doesn't have the same wow factor or rather "awwwwww" factor as this other image by the same user. Oppose Sorry, this is really a nice scenery and a good composition, but large parts of the landscape (which IMHO is the subject) are rather soft, and in darker parts, espec. at the right, one sees irritating dust (?) and something like a reflection or violet veiling (see image note). Was this photo taken through a window? – Ah, maybe the “dust” items are just falling rain drops. That would explain them. Comment Because Julio Cesar Goncalves Corrêa is not very active here, I have created a slightly edited version. The editing possibilities are somewhat limited in this case (because of the compression and the large gradients in the original file we run very soon into pixelation and posterization when we make major changes). However the CAs on contours as well as the colour noise on the dunes and water is mostly gone and the extreme vignetting on the top left corner fixed, too. (I have kept some of the slight vignetting at the left, removing it entirely seems to reduce the effect of the image.) @ArionStar, Basile Morin, and El Golli Mohamed: What do you think? If you like this version better, please nominate it as an alternative. If you have further hints for editing, I will try to fulfil them. InfoMandarinfishes (Synchiropus splendidus) during mating, Anilao, Philippines. The mandarinfish is native to the Pacific, ranging approximately from the Ryukyu Islands south to Australia, in a depth of up to 18 metres (59 ft). They reach a length between 5–8 centimetres (2.0–3.1 in) with males being bigger (on the left in this picture). Despite their popularity in the aquarium trade, mandarinfish are considered difficult to keep as some fish never adapt to aquarium life, refusing to eat anything but amphipods and copepods, what this carnivore feeds from in wild. In the background the mountains of the Tuscan-Romagnolo Apennines are visible and recognisable at a distance of 50 kilometres. These hilly places are historically important, as the famous Italian poet Dante Alighieri stayed there immediately after being exiled from Florence, and then went to Forlì and Ravenna where he rests in peace. Dante remained in these areas very close to Florence between 1302 and 1303 because he was aiming for an agreement with the Ubaldini family to gain access to Florence, at the time the dominion of the Black Guelphs. Dante was a White Guelph and when he realized that he could not return without taking risks (he had been sentenced to death for treason), he left those places from which he had had security. In chapter XXVII of the Divine Comedy - Inferno (starting from line 25) he speculated and explained differences between places and consequently pointed which area of Romagna could be convenient to live in without running further risks. Support This picture creates an interesting mood, and I think its impact is stronger when you consider what is happening in Crimea and the Ukraine. The colors of the rocks against the water of the black sea and the gray clouds. The woman photographing her child, the smooth hills, with the large, sharp outcroppings, and all of the pebbles and small stones. I think of the resilience of the people of Ukraine in harsh conditions, the Holodomor and the Russian occupation. And she seems more attentive to the photographer and the image of herself than to the protest in action. Nazi analogies are so often rehashed that they are not very powerful, in addition to corrupting ancient history. It could be useful if the sign was blurred like the license plate numbers in some pictures. You are clearly missing the point of having FPs. Ideally, we should have at least one image that is so great it can be viewed as an FP for each category and each article on the WikiProject. Saying that we don't need more FPs of birds because there are already hundreds of them, is simply ludicrous. We need more FPs (of all sorts of subjects), not less, if this is ever going to be the high quality project we strive to make it. And please stop referring to the front-page all the time with these boilerplate opposes, they are not a helpful critique. The front-page is an insignificant by-product, not a goal. Odd votes like this, are actually counterproductive since they keep many good photographers away from FPC, thereby limiting the selection of diverse photos here. Your reasoning sounds really warped to me. So in your opinion, what should we have FPs of since according to you, people and birds are now out of the question, and how many FPs do you think we should have on Commons to cover all articles and projects? You have only stated cons in your arguments, I'm interested in hearing your pros. I'm also curious about what categories here contain thousands of illustrations of the same subject. I do a lot of category sorting, and I don't recall coming across such categories. I believe that all of Proto's opposing votes should be nullified. Criticizing pictures of birds and claiming they do not fit within COM:SCOPE, as well as using the Main Page as a reason to oppose, are unhelpful reasons. Additionally, Proto mentioned that they would "start voting oppose very often" because the image they nominated received multiple opposing votes due to quality and professionality. People turned this FP thing into a "some of the finest by photography technical criteria but nothing else" long ago but WMC is not a photography critique site (not saying technical photo critique shouldn't be done and that there shouldn't be photo communities on the site). Support Thank you, RodRabelo7, for this nomination. I reconstructed the image from RAW using NX Studio, applying a vignetting fix. I used Topaz Denoise for noise reduction. The ISO was set to 1600 due to the lighting conditions. I didn't use a tripod to avoid drawing attention in a favela. The aperture was set to 2.8 because the subject was far away, and at such distances, a larger aperture isn't necessary. Oppose Level of blur of the background. Yes, DoF is a real problem, not only on edges, also at the distance. Low level of detail due to high ISO: 2500 here or 5000 / 1600 in the previous version(s), it is far too excessive when you need to lift the shadows in post-process. Shooting at dark night without tripod is hard (more than blue hour). The picture is okay to document the place, but technically not one of the finest. Empirical solutions when you don't have a tripod: 1) use a simple (and more discreet) monopod, which generally allows you to reach one full second quite easily, 2) use a wall, or any edge of surrounding structure, then stabilize the camera with stones, 3) walk with a friend who masters martial arts :-) or with good eyes, capable of monitoring, 4) Possible sometimes to manually take multiple shots at different focus points, then carefully assembly them at home, 5) Go at blue hour, when there is still more light. What bothers me more, is "the excessive noise reduction" (far more important than here for comparison), destroying the textures and details, in addition to the low DoF. Info Goby (Amblyeleotris rubrimarginata), Anilao, Philippines. This species of goby found on reefs or in sea grass beds in the western Pacific from New Caledonia to the Great Barrier Reef and around New Guinea, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. It can be found at depths of from 3 to 26 metres (9.8 to 85.3 ft). This is a fairly elongated goby up to 8 centimetres (3.1 in) standard length. Comment On Helicon Focus, have you tried to use a lower radius (4 or less)? It might help in reducing the blurry areas around the stamen. Sometimes a lower radius creates halos around the flower, though. When that happens I often use the 'Use other output as source' option in the 'Retouching' tab to combine to combine the best bits of a high-radius stack and a low-radius one. --Julesvernex2 (talk)

I just checked what I use: Depth map (B) Radius 8, Smoothing 4. I never change it. You have to go through each image cloning in the background where it is in focus then manually complete in Photoshop/Lightroom using the cloning tool. It is time-consuming. You're throwing away a lot of what Helicon can do by sticking to the default settings and going straight to cloning. Here's the workflow I found most effective so far: 1) make several outputs with different settings (usually method B with a 4 to 20 radius, but sometimes also method C); 2) combine the best features of each output (with the 'Use other output as source' option mentioned above); 3) clean up the background by sourcing it from a single frame (usually Helicon sources it from multiple frames, messing up the bokeh); 4) clone any lingering errors (sometimes within Helicon, but most often using Photoshop's better tools) --Julesvernex2 (talk) 16:59, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
