The info and reference have been added to the description on the file page. It's up to Ermell to perhaps add the "as of 2009" to the file name when the nom is done. --Cart (talk) 15:46, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Look at it from the bright side: The new clock face is there to be photographed any day now, this historic face can't be photographed again. Do you call a photo of Manhattan with the Twin Towers outdated or an historical documentation that we are lucky to have? --Cart (talk) 18:09, 28 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Snowflake moray (Echidna nebulosa), Anilao, Philippines
  • I have applied a slight crop to the right bottom corner, so that what I believe is a feather star (black thing), is not on the way. Even if that could be an improvement, I don't see what is wrong with the crop, morays live in holes and rarely go out during the day as they are nocturnal predators. I also have to say that this animal is rare, and probably that's the reason why we have no FPs of the whole genus. That conditions to take pictures under water are more challenging than over the water is something that I don't need to elaborate, I guess. --Poco a poco (talk) 10:31, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have little doubt after reading the same words I used "Infortunate (sic) crop" in my review. That's an statement that doesn't speak for the reviewer. Again, we have no FP of the genus Echidna, but we have already 4 FPs of the species (not genus) Himantopus himantopus. I've definitely supported more images that I've opposed of El Golli Mohamed, so I have no personal issue here and no problem with the photographer, let alone free-license photographers. If I'm convinced, I support the image if not, I oppose, that has nothing to do with whom is behind the camera and in most of the cases people believe that and are thankful for the feedback. Poco a poco (talk) 10:31, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Dear reviewers, normally I am not a fan of repeating old mistakes, but regarding the incident mentioned here again, I would like to refer to the recent discussion from late May/early June. I agree with Poco a poco that we should please focus only on the images and not on the photographer behind the camera. Only through constructive discourse can we work together in a meaningful and healthy way. Behind every username there is a person who has to be respected, no matter if we have a different opinion or not. Best, -- Radomianin (talk) 09:08, 28 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • I am happy to rotate the image. However, I don't know what it should look like. The background and thus the horizon are not horizontal, as it is a hilly terrain that slopes to the left. Should I straighten the horizon and thus distort the image? --XRay 💬 09:43, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The person who looks to the photo don't know about the hilly terrain and will think that it's a problem so it's really better to rotate it a bit and the composition will be perfect. El Golli Mohamed (talk) 12:22, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Just a quick note: I can understand the arguments, but I have a bad feeling about such a change. Nature doesn't just have straight horizons, and that's something you can see. Anyone who wants to rotate the image for their own purposes is welcome to do so. The license allows it. --XRay 💬 17:41, 5 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

GBU-38 munitions are dropped by a American B-1B Lancer bomber onto an insurgent torture house and prison in Northern Zambraniyah, Iraq, March 10, 2008.
Yes, but atomic bomb tests killed people indirectly through radiation sickness not well understood at the time. It may not be relevant, but the nominator is a great admirer of US Armed Forces. Charlesjsharp (talk) 10:44, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
FPC guidelines: "The meaning of the image should be judged according to the cultural context of the image, not by the cultural context of the observer. An image "speaks" to people, and it has the capacity to evoke emotion such as tenderness, rage, rejection, happiness, sadness, etc. Good photographs are not limited to evoking pleasant sensation" -- Basile Morin (talk) 12:09, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And the vote takes into account the context of the observer. Given that the nominator is a great admirer of the US Armes Forces, I don't really think that he wants to evoke rejection or sadness through his image. El Golli Mohamed (talk) 14:33, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Having a user on Commons who has a special interest in military matters is useful. That means he can dig through piles of such images for the best ones and nominate them here, and we don't need to see all those depressing images. --Cart (talk) 15:38, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The nominator is not the photographer. All the countries of the world have army and weapons. The nominator is also a cyclist, a cat lover, and so what? -- Basile Morin (talk) 01:53, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think anyone here would vote in admiration of this. There can also be a "wow" in the very accuracy of an image. There is a language barrier here in thinking that "wow" is only defined in a positive way. There can also be "wow" for the skill off the photographer to capture something difficult very accurately. "Wow" is the ability for a photo to evoke emotion (good or bad) in the viewer. --Cart (talk) 15:13, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You misunderstand the meaning of Wow Cart. Unwise for a Swede to lecture a Tunisian. I agree with what El Golli Mohamed wrote. Charlesjsharp (talk) 21:30, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't speaking about "wow" according to Encyclopædia Britannica, but as used in the FPC guidelines as quoted by Basile earlier in this discussion. For years now, we've abridged that long sentence into the short word "wow". Whatever nationality we have, we are all WikiMedians. Right? --Cart (talk) 21:39, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Mr. R. B. Whitley visiting in his general store, Wendell. Wake County, North Carolina, September 1939
  • Gallery: Commons:Featured pictures/Historical/People#1930-1939
  •  Info created by Marion Post Wolcott, restored, uploaded, and nominated by Yann
  •  Info Mr. R. B. Whitley visiting in his general store, Wendell, Wake County, North Carolina, September 1939. Picture from the US Farm Security Administration. Photographer's comment: He was one of the first citizens of the town and is one of its leading citizens, owner of the general store, president of the bank, and owns a cotton mill nearby, and a farm. He is a big land owner, owns Whitley-Davis farm and a cotton mill in Clayton. He said he cut down the trees and pulled the stumps out of the main street, and was the first man in that town of Wendell.

the light show on Xi'an city wall during the Spring Festival in 2024
  • Gallery: Commons:Featured pictures/People#Events
  •  Info created by Ghrkya - uploaded by Ghrkya - nominated by Ghrkya -- Ghrkya (talk) 13:48, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support This picture was taken during the Spring Festival(or known as the Lunar New Year),and shows the yearly light show on the Xi'an city wall, which is the only well-protected city wall in China.I chose the main door of the city wall-Yong-Ning Men to record that(the whole city wall is too long to be taken).I believe this picutre can perfectly show the situation when Chinese people celebrate the Spring Festival. -- Ghrkya (talk) 13:48, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment The people in the front are disturbing. You may have a chance if you crop a chunk at the bottom Poco a poco (talk) 10:52, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your reply,I do had thought about this cropping. But I want to show how enthusiastic the Chinese people are when celebrating the Spring Festival.I can understand you that this people may looks a bit messy, but in a other way,the crowded people can perfectly shows the situation. --This is ghrkya who don't want to change this signature 14:29, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Support I understand the objection about the foreground people, but when we consider this as a photo of the Spring Festival (not just of the building), the people are an essential part of the image. IMHO it’s OK that the people are out of focus, as the photo does not intend to show the individual persons, but the event with a mass of people coming and going. – Aristeas (talk) 17:51, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • ✘[No] No, and El Golli Mohamed is certainly the last person who should defend revenge votes here:
  1. Reported twice at COM:ANU for explicit revenge votes. Warned in 2015 (see the huge list of disrupted nominations in this consensual section).
  2. Blocked 2 weeks in 2024 for recurrence.
  3. Again two weeks ago on Poco's nomination (using the same words as him in this unsuccessful nomination).
Unacceptable. -- Basile Morin (talk) 01:01, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The last, the first I don't care. So because you are always trying to find errors in the photos of others, we should not criticize your photos, or it will be a revenge vote? Maybe it's a new rule here. El Golli Mohamed (talk) 11:09, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Road to Padum nestled beneath the Zanskar Range

It gives the feeling that after this road there's a path, and climbing up this path leads to the top. I'm sure it's much more difficult, and that's probably why the picture is interesting. A red link is a signpost pointing to a knowledge gap. It's an opportunity to expand the wiki's content, not a problem to be eliminated. Instead of removing the red link, it should have been created to enhance the educational value of the file. Removing the category was an act of vandalism, as it diminished the educational potential and removed metadata. By deleting the red link, you prevented me from easily identifying and creating the category. Now, I'll have to double-check if others who may not understand wiki principles have also removed red links. -- Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton m 07:09, 15 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Social Flycatcher Perched
-- Basile Morin (talk) 03:39, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • You can basically reject any image with this type of rating. Portraits of women are out of the question, as are photos of birds. Your reviews seem very generalized. --XRay 💬 16:42, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, I can't and I supported many images that have actually something in them worth of making them a FP. Maybe photos of birds have been worth of it for a while but people seen enough photos of them by now and there's nothing special here compared to other high-quality bird pics. Portraits in general, yes. Prototyperspective (talk) 17:38, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We voters usually allow a photo for each species to be qualified for FP. A significant portion of FPs are of lifeforms, usually different species. For this species, there are no FPs. Zzzs (talk) 21:06, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would support a revision to this practice – there are million upon millions of species. Maybe something like a certain number of items per family would make sense but I think it would be better if there's more consideration of which photos people are likely already familiar with and/or which have been extensively featured by now already. Prototyperspective (talk) 21:25, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm doubting this new practice would take off, but if you really want to, go head. Zzzs (talk) 22:23, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your comment and I appreciate that even though the image is not to your liking that you feel it is a high quality image. Needsmoreritalin (talk) 01:56, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't know where you got the idea Zzzs that "voters usually allow a photo for each species to be qualified for FP". That has never been the case. The typical comment I make 'no FPs of this species' is made to stop voters wasting their time checking current FPs. In no way is that to imply that voters should wave it through. Rarity is a different matter. Nominators should always tell voters if there are existing FPs of their subject, whatever it is. Charlesjsharp (talk) 21:21, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. But do we want it on the Main page (at least at this point where these have been extensively featured and people have seen very many such images in general already) – and if not wouldn't another nomination make more sense or there be exception for which FP are featured there and in the Wikipedia app? Consider that there are many alternative things to feature which would be more interesting to people and get WMC more users and contributors. Prototyperspective (talk) 13:43, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Those are called pictures of the day. Any featured picture can be a POTD. However, they are NOT required.
Also, this isn't about being on the Main Page. It's about whether the image is really one of the best pictures Commons has to offer. An image being on the Main Page is irrelevant. Zzzs (talk) 14:35, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh didn't know, thanks for clarifying and wonder why this has been clarified only now since my rationales on my votes from yesterday were based on that and would have been easily refuted with this info.
It's a bit confusing to have so many different kinds of nominations (FP, MOTD, POTD, quality image,...) so I think maybe all of this should be clarified succinctly (e.g. with a small diagram) at the top of the pages (like the FP candidates page and note that the "Featured pictures" page has no info on POTD but shows the day on the right). I thought it was called "featured" picture because it was "featured" on the Main page and that if not added there right away it would be featured there sooner or later. So now my objections only relate to which kinds of images are being nominated / frequently being nominated (which anybody can contribute to by also nominating other kinds of images) – will strike the respective votes. Sorry for it. Prototyperspective (talk) 15:14, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oval portrait miniature of Gustave Duchesne oil painting by Valentine Manchon Duchesne in 1886

You...still haven't answered or fixed my issue with the white spots on the outside. They're fixable. --SHB2000 (talk) 06:54, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
💡 Info And if you zoom in on this painting for example (which is proportionally 35 times larger), you'll see a bunch of small cracks, which are characteristic of high resolution paintings, and which testify to the real condition of the canvas. These details are important, and don't always deserve to be erased. They can also give an interesting indication of scale and level of detail of the artwork -- Basile Morin (talk) 07:28, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
These dots are invisible to the eye. They appear due to the high level of detail. Some of them are part of the painting, some of them might come from the velvet frame around. The painting may also be slightly locally deteriorated at this scale, since it is 138 years old. Removing these elements to rejuvenate the painting is of course possible, but I think that this would alter the reality of the work, preserved in its current state. Especially on the face, eyes and lips. From my point of view, these are natural dots, that are an integral part of the object. Like the frame, which does not deserve to be deleted, even if it is worn by time -- Basile Morin (talk) 01:43, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Photo art based on a photo of a tree trunk in the Hohe Mark Nature Park in the district of Holtwick, Haltern am See, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
Info In short: photographic art as described. In long: Explaining photographic art is certainly not easy, but I can say something about how it came about. The motif was a tree trunk with a varied structure - with different shades of green and brown. This tree trunk was photographed using the "Intentional camera movement" technique, so that the corresponding movement effect was created. The direction of movement of the camera was parallel to the tree trunk. The exposure time was chosen so that the structure of the trunk was still preserved. (It was only an exposure time of 0.6 seconds, so not too little and not too much). In post-processing, the image was edited so that the contrasts were emphasized and at the same time the colors were made a little more saturated. The resulting image was the basis for the image shown here. In the final step, the image was duplicated (in 2 layers) and one layer was mirrored in order to achieve the symmetry effect. Both layers were then blended together so that the dark tones were dominant. --XRay 💬 04:57, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • I find your statement remarkable and honest. It is understandable. I have had these difficulties myself and still have them today. For me, it is a further development of photographic creativity. I first had to make friends with ICM, but I already enjoy the pictures that are created with it. I also have a preference for symmetries. I can only recommend trying out lots of things and being creative with photography. --XRay 💬 20:06, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • How should I rate "boring"? You have no access to photographic art? You don't see any content? When do you see meaningful content? I find your assessment quite confusing. --XRay 💬 16:39, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's not special, or interesting, or worth a FP. If asking about that adjective it's about how interesting and engaging such as thought-provocative and inspiring something is. Note "strange" is not meant as a reason for opposition, it's just a mention that it's basically unknown or meaningless what's being looked at. Meaningful is when you for example can say this artwork is about this or that such as communicating some emotion or idea etc. My rationale is similar to the one just above mine. Prototyperspective (talk) 17:33, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Artwork is about this or that"? Maybe you just don't have the mental access to it? Neither photographic art nor a painting or sculpture always has to be figurative. BTW: I see a forest spirit in the picture, even if this is my imagination. --XRay 💬 06:19, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose Agreeing with the above opposes. Also my reasoning is that Commons' scope is education not entertainment. On that basis, evaluating the image as an illustration of a photo technique I find it is not the best of its type - I can't easily understand the camera movement. Having said that, it is a beautiful piece of art and I wouldn't mind hanging it on my wall.--Commander Keane (talk) 06:42, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Perhaps the argument should not ignore the fact that "educational" is to be understood in a broad sense and that Wikimedia Commons is a media archive for all Wikimedia Foundation projects. In this respect, I am of the opinion that the image fits very well into the scope. --XRay 💬 07:53, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • + 1. Thank you. – Aristeas (talk) 09:32, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Commander Keane, I think you might consider that Commons has such a broad scope that even images that at first glance may not look "educational" can indeed be used as illustrations for more articles and other WikiProjects rather than just the first one that comes to your mind. Example: Another ICM photo that is used to illustrate an article. Here at FPC we only worry about if the image is really good, and then we let editors decide where they want to use them. --Cart (talk) 16:10, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@W.carter and XRay: I am happy to discuss further but I am currently unmoved by your arguments. Perhaps on the talk page of this nomination so as not to distract. Just ping me. Commander Keane (talk) 18:15, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Commander Keane, I think it's ok to say the few words I have in reply here (talk pages are very rarely used here on FPC, discussions about images are held on the nom page as to not divide discussions needlessly). I have no problem with you not thinking this photo is not one of the best on Commons, that's perfectly ok. But I think we should not discard such images as "useless", just because we might not see the context in which they might be used. I have now found use of this image in two articles. --Cart (talk) 18:29, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@W.carter: Ok I will reply here. In w:The Snow (poem) the photographer (you) added a random image to the article to decorate it, without even the caption "artist impression" - misleading to readers and I would be surprised if the image stays in the long term. The same applies to w:Rhombus and I am not sure how lax Wiktionary's policies are for image placement but wiktionary:light at the end of the tunnel is a real stretch. Saying an image has potential for Wikimedia usage is a slippery slope, see this deletion request. You can argue that if an image scrapes into the Scope, and people think it is pretty then we feature. This has ramifications though, for example now someone wanting to learn about a rhombus will get this "postmegasurrealism" image as a top suggestion. Commander Keane (talk) 19:08, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Commander Keane, thank you. I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this point. You are taking the hardliner approach that only exact images should be used in articles. There are many like you here, but I am of the opinion that articles that deal with abstract subjects can also benefit from having images, and often more abstract images are better suited for this purpose. Artists are often called on to illustrate texts about non-tangible subjects, although you call such practice "to decorate" an article. Articles on Wikis etc. are not scientific papers, even though many editors do their best to turn many of them into such, but are supposed to bring knowledge to as many people as possible. And often, an image can help to make an article more accessible and distinguishable from other articles. You can view each article the same way you view a book. A hundred years ago, a book on an abstract subject looked like this, while this is what a similar book looks like today. It's small thing, having an image to associate with a text/book/paper/article, but it helps. --Cart (talk) 19:34, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@W.carter: Thank you for your response. Using this image to potentially illustrate the cover of a WikiBook is an interesting use case that I did not consider. I will ponder my position further personally. Incidentally, did you create The Snow (poem) image for that article specifically, or was it just a happy coincidence? Commander Keane (talk) 21:09, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Commander Keane, no, the image was created outside the WikiProject and only uploaded and nominated here when the new gallery for creative photography was added. I do a lot of "outside the box" images, and they have met with mixed receptions here. I was actually totally flabbergasted by how well that photo was received. I often browse FPC, WLM, WLE, etc. looking for good images to pair with articles on the projects. Mostly images by others, but sometimes mine. I think that when the community has put so much work in weeding out good images, it would be a shame not to put them to use somewhere. I also update articles with what good images I can find. I had come across the poem by accident some months before my photo was promoted, and since people seemed to like the picture and it was in tone with the poem, I thought it might be ok to pair the two. My edits may be bold, but they are free to revert (as I sometimes say in the edit summary) and I do abide by such decisions, and never edit-war to keep the images I suggest. So far, more have been kept than reverted. If I create an image specially for an article, it is usually for articles that are very hard to get images for (1, 2). --Cart (talk) 22:11, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose Sorry if this is ignorant to the effort you spent on this, but my impression is that this can be made easily and it's not very impressive to me. I have made stuff like this before when messing with blending layers Henrysz (talk) 03:17, 17 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Whether it is easy to create or not is actually irrelevant. An FP does not always have to be complicated to create. In any case, experience plays a role in the effort involved, which is also impossible to estimate. In any case, the focus here was on the idea and the photos were taken on the basis of this idea. Of course, the image is ultimately only created in post-processing. --XRay 💬 07:03, 17 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose I don't understand where something outstanding is. And while "Featured picture" shouldn't be essentially a photograph, these abstractions does not reaaly fall into any of criteria for FP. What do you look at when you're measuring its quality? What is wow here or at least what was the intention for the creation of a picture and is it clear for a viewer? And what is the overall meaning and educational value in these pictures? I don't like to sound as an old professor but bring it back when you'll find a meaning for it. Красный wanna talk? 09:38, 17 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have one small request: please don't always mention this so-called “educational value”. The Scope of the project is clearly defined further and is not limited to this. I have already explained this in another comment above. Quite apart from that, the views on what is “educational” are completely different. It is not a clearly tangible argument, but rather a matter of interpretation. The fact that I can't think of a use case doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Thank you! --XRay 💬 09:55, 17 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • FYI, a cite from the scope: The aim of Wikimedia Commons is to provide a media file repository … that acts as a common repository for the various projects of the Wikimedia Foundation. --XRay 💬 09:57, 17 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose I like the image. But as this here is a process of promoting outstanding photographic works, and the rules are stating that FP candidates should at least fulfil the requirements of good images as well as QI should and be outstanding in a way, I must say that this is not a good image showing anything existing in the real world in an exceptional good way. It might be art. But this is not an art contest. I could support this, if it was a reproduction of a piece of art. but it's not. --August (talk) 11:57, 18 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Neutral I see the problem. The image needs that sunlight from the curtain to express the emotional feeling connected to the cats attitude. After you changed the exposure the effect is gone and the curtain look unnatural. But without your changes it looks as there was a defect. So I am not sure about your nomination any more. --August Geyler (talk) 15:52, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Start of Gotland Grand National 2023
  • Well, quickly, 1) You're welcome, a) When time is limited, try to frame larger during the action, then you'll have all the time to crop afterwards, b) The crowd is fine, no worry about that, c) we disagree about the focus. Depth of field could have been more generous. We could also say that this is what makes the difference between an ordinary photo and a great one. At thumbnail size, the biker at the left is already blurry. So that's not very appealing. d) Not sure, but anyway here it's Commons :-) Otherwise there would be a bunch of fair candidates, too, at smaller resolution. e) Yes, high resolution with limited DoF. Finally I find this is a good candid picture, but not an extraordinary one. Best regards -- Basile Morin (talk) 07:07, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
      • Just a clarification. There was no time to switch between lenses/cameras and Nikon's superb 70-200 was a reasonable choice of lens imo. There were hundreds of motorcycles so some motorcycle or rider will always be cropped regardless of focal length. And without a zoom lens, the picture would (in my humble opinion) be much more boring. I personally think that one of the picture's strengths is that you get so close to the riders. Best regards--ArildV (talk) 07:19, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • On another way, it's a blurry image (foreground AND background), except when you zoom in :-) Then you think "oh, this rider here is not out of focus". But alone in the crowd. To summarize my personal point of view, I would have preferred that the whole thing was sharper, and the composition better mastered. • I guess, I have to assume again that this has nothing to do with my last vote in one of your noms. This is getting boring. We are talking here about a tiny animal shot underwater and still there is more detail here and in some current FPCs Poco a poco (talk) 08:44, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I remember you that it's just a comment not a vote so don't tell me please about your last vote. This is boring. An underwater photo doesn't mean an unsharp photo, not well exposed. You did good sharp underwater photos that I supported as FP. This one is not a good quality. Try to fix it. If Ermell for exemple voted against your photo that you nominated today for QI, that means that it's in relation with an old vote? It's simply because your photo has not a good quality. •  Support -- Prototyperspective (talk) 21:34, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Neutral I'm a fan of this type of illustrations, but the hyperrealism might be counterproductive. Some animals blend into the background and are hard to distinguish without zooming in. If the goal is to print it as a poster, it will fail because the hyperrealism creates noise and hides the main subjects. Sometimes, less is more. --Wilfredor (talk) 23:36, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it's not perfect. The background is important so I think one is only supposed to glance over the animals which are only examples to enable a rough idea and it's sufficient that one can properly see them even though they are a bit hard to distinguish from the background at times. There's not much like it in the Commons, it helps illustrate several Wikipedia articles otherwise lacking images and is a rare and educational interesting image. The concept itself already is quite valuable but the artistic execution and the overall implementation is still more than worth featuring even when not perfect (which other complex-subject comprehensive FP things are?). Moreover, having to zoom in is fine. Less is more is not possible in this case. Prototyperspective (talk) 23:54, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment I would have expected more examples of plants like Rhyniophyte and ferns. --Lupe (talk) 19:25, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Would be good but it doesn't reduce the quality or accuracy dramatically I think and people could add it. It would be best if image project files like XCF could be uploaded but here one could simply add things on top (this way one can't remove things, move things, or alter the background however which is why I meant to request this feature at some point and think I've seen it discussed already somewhere). I don't think this is much of a reason to nonsupport or oppose the image instead of e.g. a weak support and the file could be improved at a later point. Photos of mundane birds everybody has seen a thousand times are better than a heavily use actually-educational illustration about something that is relatively unknown and exciting. FP have absurd selection of featured pictures, these are ~always both noneducational and boring. Per COM:SCOPE a key function of the site is educational media and illustrations, not some kind of technical photography critique site. Prototyperspective (talk) 20:15, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Strong oppose per above. There are better diagrams than this. Since its a computer model, it can be recreated. I have a strong feeling this will be FPX'd soon. Sorry! --Zzzs (talk) 04:08, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is one of the best diagrams created by Commons users and I don't see an issue with it. Other FPs are also not perfect, just great but maybe I should just start voting oppose very often because the whole thing is a joke and some kind of technical photo competition rather than in lie with COM:SCOPE. And your rationale is not strong since you didn't even mentioned a reason nor what would be better if recreated. FPs should work with what there is in the commons, not have low standards for photos and extremely high standards for actually educational illustrations. One could easily fix the color of the pointer lines which I think is the only notable problem among the ones mentioned. Prototyperspective (talk) 09:59, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ideal picture about life and society in the Stone Age - cave dwellers (painting made ca 1885)
Thank you for nominating this image. Unfortunately, it does not fall within the Guidelines and is unlikely to succeed for the following reason: Image is small size for an artwork, uncentered, and image quality is below the threshold for FPs. The image is not representative for the Stone Age as an historic period. It stretched for roughly 3.4 million years and it was only during the last 40,000 or 30,000 of those, that dogs became domesticated.--Cart (talk) 14:37, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply] Anyone other than the nominator who disagrees may override this template by changing {{FPX}} to {{FPX contested}} and adding a vote in support. Voting will then continue in the usual way. If not contested within 24 hours, this nomination may be closed.
  1. The image is 2,704 × 1,386 and 2.5 MB. The size certainly isn't a problem, it's very large.
  2. From Stone AgeThe period lasted for roughly 3.4 million years[1] and ended between 4,000 BC and 2,000 BC and dogs were domesticated around 15 k years ago. So the rationale at least is objectively false but not entirely sure what you mean with and assume with "representative for" there. Shouldn't have put the FPX template there for no good reason. --Prototyperspective (talk) 22:15, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It might very well be a pretty painting, but it is a fantasy version of what the Stone Age might have looked like. It was made long before any modern archeological science had begun, so if there was a good photo of it, it could be nominated as just a painting and not as something that we should put forward as to what the age actually looked like. If you want a painting to represent what the era looked like as in "realistically depicting ancient society", I don't think this is the one. Stone Age people only had dogs for 1.17% percent of that period (at the end of it), so it's bit of a stretch to have this representing the era. It would be like having how things looked in 2023-2024 representing all of the last 2000 years. There is also a guy who looks like he is blowing a horn. The oldest musical instruments found are from 60,000 BC, so in the same ballpark as the dogs.
If you compare it to most of the other paintings that are promoted now, you'll find that it is indeed quite small. And with the off-center doorway/whatever and very poor technical quality, it's not enough for FP. --Cart (talk) 22:28, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just makes it more explicit that you seem to confuse Featured Pictures with Featured Photos even despite that there is a gallery type for nonphotographic media and that I linked it above. Nobody is assuming or stating it's a totally factual entirely accurate representation. I used that word realistically only in my support rationale, not in the nomination. Maybe one could clarify that this is showing a scene at the end of the stone age. If you look at the gallery for which this is nominated all or nearly all of them are how people imagined things. Maybe it's problematic that it isn't much informed by modern science and that one would need to attach text to clarify that if anything it would be toward the end of that period. However, this does not represent the whole era – maybe you think so because of the title but I was not suggesting that title was somehow displayed (at least without the explaining text). What matters is not the details but more general things like them being next to a cave, but the aspect of this being how people in recent history imagined humans in the past is also relevant. It's not clearly false and if it was it should be contextualized anyway. Also maybe the file should be moved from "aus der Steinzeit" to sth like "der Steinzeit" / "Imagined scene of the late Stone Age (1885 painting)". Prototyperspective (talk) 22:40, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not confusing any galleries, I know pretty well what they stand for since I created many of them. But, sorry, even with all the caveats, the small file and low technical quality of it remains. --Cart (talk) 22:54, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comment For featured reproductions of nonphotographic media, the “featured” status distinguishes to a large extent the quality of the digital reproduction. We do not feature a reproduction even of the greatest painting on earth when the reproduction is insufficient. Just take a look at the individual gallery pages – e.g. the ‘Exteriors’ … That gallery contains not only excellent, but also many rather solid and typical artworks, but in outstanding digital reproduction. – Aristeas (talk) 14:29, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Strong oppose It seems the FPX may be contested (not sure what's going on here), but what Cart said. --SHB2000 (talk) 05:09, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose Sorry, this is a very interesting painting, but the resolution is really low for a digital reproduction according to today’s standards, and in addition it’s rather unsharp and blotchy. Not even to mention the problem of factual authenticity rightly flagged by Cart … – Aristeas (talk) 14:03, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose blurry at full res. Disagree with that it is "realistically depicting ancient society" - that may have been the artist's intent in the 1880s, but the "caveman" archetype notions are badly outdated from improved understanding from archaeological studies in the generations since then. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 22:00, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • And what about Commons:Featured pictures/People/Portrait? Yann (talk) 17:37, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have any issues with community-rating them as high-quality or even "Featured picture", I just oppose them being featured on the Main page, the rss feeds, and the Wikipedia app. Most of the images on the page I think would be unsuited for these three things, however many also show special things that may make them worthy of FP since they are not about the person but the peculiarity of (e.g. the activity of the person etc) the image such as those:
Prototyperspective (talk) 17:45, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with the above. How is a woman's portrait photo a valid reason to oppose? Is it because there's no wow? Zzzs (talk) 17:34, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Portrait photos are unsuited for featured pictures why would they be suited for it? It's not about the wow, it's about the quality/characteristics of the image, portrait photos are inappropriate. See explanation above and it could be elaborated further despite that I don't know why people seem to find it surprising. Prototyperspective (talk) 17:37, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Prototyperspective, images converted to links. Please do not display other images at a nomination. The FPCBot will read them as 'Alternatives' and this will complicate things for the nom closing. --Cart (talk) 18:11, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Undid vote for the reasons given here, a FP doesn't have to be a POTD and my points if anything are now only about which kinds of images (not) frequently nominated as FP but not about whether or not it should be FP. --Prototyperspective (talk) 15:24, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Support In some contexts, it has happened to me that I write something but not completely because the other part remains in my head (I think this is the case). Another possibility is that the author of the negative vote comment has a native language other than English, and when translating, something that might have made sense does not entirely make sense, or due to their limited way of explaining and giving arguments. --Wilfredor (talk) 18:03, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You seem to refer to my comments without addressing any points outlined broadly in it but do not provide any rationale as to why this photo of a human should be a featured picture shown on the Main page. There's nothing special about it, it's a portrait photo of a notable human and people are better learning about people by looking at their Wikipedia article, e.g. via Featured Wikipedia articles, than at a photo of them. Why should this be a FP, please explain. Prototyperspective (talk) 18:10, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I get the impression that you are confusing Wikipedia with Wikimedia Commons. However, the criteria for what an FP means are different. --XRay 💬 04:30, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was pointing out that you are basically confusing WMC with Wikipedia by putting portraint photos of notable people on the Main page which is something the featured articles on WP are for, not photos here.
Still no addressing of any points or explanation for why this would be good to be FP. Prototyperspective (talk) 12:18, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Where do you get this idea that articles about people should be featured on Wikipedia, but not images on Commons? Why would we not want to feature portaits? Kritzolina (talk) 15:32, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Prototyperspective, It is WMC that supplies the different Wikipedias with images, images of all sorts of subjects (including people), and it is on our interest to show what really good images should look like (including portraits of people). This is how we set standards for excellent photos: through examples. No images here are promoted simply for being on the front page of Commons, they are all selected because they are suitable for the different Wikipedia projects. And as for getting on the Commons front page, is in fact rather uncommon for a portrait to end up there since there are about ten times 365 FPs promoted each year. I think that your notion about people on FPs, is at the wrong forum. Here we only assess what photos are excellent; if you have a problem with them appearing on Commons front page as Picture of the day you should discuss that at that project's talk page, not here. --Cart (talk) 15:43, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes indeed, that's why I recently struck my vote – didn't know not all FP are included there and thanks for pointing to the best suited place to discuss this. Prototyperspective (talk) 17:28, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment It is a very poor portrait with an unfortunate facial expression. Charlesjsharp (talk) 18:07, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Support Appealing portrait in good quality. Honestly I do not understand most of the objections in this discussion. We may say that this isn’t a very innovative or creative kind of portrait; but a portrait must be adequate in style and technique to the character and mission of the person it shows, and IMHO this does apply here. – Aristeas (talk) 12:31, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is a high-quality portrait but why should it be featured on the Main page? And as for your rationale, there are millions of high-quality portraits, everybody with access to the Internet has seen lots of them. Prototyperspective (talk) 12:51, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comment First I do not vote for an image because I want it to appear on the main page etc.; IMHO that’s a minor matter. I vote pro/contra images in order to help to select the featured pictures. Second, maybe there are millions of high-quality portraits, but (it’s a pity) only very few high-quality portraits with a free license – browse Wikimedia Commons and you will see that 99.9% of our portrait photographs are of low or modest quality. Third, after reading about Mia Farrow and browsing photos of her, I have the impression that this photo is a very fitting portrait that matches her character. It would be inappropriate to portrait Farrow e.g. like Dalí. You see I do not just vote “yes”, but I have taken about one hour of research before casting my vote. So you have every right to disagree and to vote against this photo, if you follow other arguments, but you do not need to quarrel with me about my vote – I have given valid reasons for it. – Aristeas (talk) 13:15, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support A charming portrait of excellent quality. And if I look at the other FIs from that gallery, I prefer this one to many others. As to the point of why portraits in general should be featured ... I don't understand the distinction from any other kind of images. There are also millions of high quality images of animals, plants, landscapes and buildings out there. We are showing the best of what we have in all kinds of topic areas as featured images and in my opinion, this one stands out for the reasons Aristeas also points out. This person is photographed in a way that seems very fitting. --Kritzolina (talk) 13:08, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • We have users dedicated to nominating images from their special field of interest like space, fractals, birds, flowers, churches, Arctics, weather, old photos, whatever. Yet the user you decide to drop a daft remark on regarding their specialty, is the one interested in cats. --Cart (talk) 20:54, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • That article wasn't made as a promotion, only a test run at translating articles from sv-wiki (article not written by me), as I have explained to you before and you didn't say anything about at the time. Now you bring that up, with your own made up reason for why it was made, as soon as you want to throw some dirt my way, it's getting old. I've spent ten years here atoning for that first mistake (yes, I call it a mistake even though I told Admins on en-wp my real name and they cleared me for writing it) and you are still holding a grudge for that, even though I've tried to have the article deleted twice. Well, I'm not the one placing a link to my website in the description field on every photo I upload here. Up until a few years ago, that was a site that promoted your own photo business. --Cart (talk) 22:01, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Felinlove and Cart, don’t take this too seriously. It’s not easy with this user; he jumps in on many nominations, commenting on everything. Of course if Charles mentions objective shortcomings of a photo, this is important (just as with any other user); but if any user (including me, including Charles, …) makes personal attacks or invents rules, it’s best just to ignore it. – Aristeas (talk) 14:57, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Comment Because Julio Cesar Goncalves Corrêa is not very active here, I have created a slightly edited version. The editing possibilities are somewhat limited in this case (because of the compression and the large gradients in the original file we run very soon into pixelation and posterization when we make major changes). However the CAs on contours as well as the colour noise on the dunes and water is mostly gone and the extreme vignetting on the top left corner fixed, too. (I have kept some of the slight vignetting at the left, removing it entirely seems to reduce the effect of the image.) @ArionStar, Basile Morin, and El Golli Mohamed: What do you think? If you like this version better, please nominate it as an alternative. If you have further hints for editing, I will try to fulfil them. Hope it helps, – Aristeas (talk) 10:22, 18 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I consider the picture photojournalism. It is nominated for the contemporary history gallery. Demonstrations and statements like this were common in 2022. --Thi (talk) 21:26, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose We have some unwriten rule, not to put actual political situtaion on FP, till it cool down. Probably we have double copyvio, i doubt author of printed photo made Kremelj and Putin photo, to make collage. Above all, i dont want to see this "hate speach" as picture of the day. --Mile (talk) 11:15, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment The sign includes copyrighted elements, so the picture is under deletion according to Commons:Derivative works. 29 Wikipedia articles use the image. It could be useful if the sign was blurred like the license plate numbers in some pictures. I don't do it with my own skills, so that the picture doesn't start to resemble Ecce Homo. --Thi (talk) 18:26, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment Agree; maybe we can help here. @A.Savin: Would you agree that it is sufficient to blur the image(s) on the demonstrator’s sign, keeping the “Stop Putler!” letters, to get rid of the copyright violation problem? Then such a modified version of this image could be kept as a useful illustration for the mentioned Wikipedia articles. Is it also necessary to blur the (already very blurry) Hitler image on the sign in the background? I would regard the latter as de minimis because it is out of focus. (And no, I do not want to promote/defent the “Putler” term; historically this is certainly a wrong comparison, just as most comparisons; but the term exists, and the image is a good illustration.) – Aristeas (talk) 19:22, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Not just the source images but also the collage itself (yes, even as poorly made one as this) may be a reason to claim copyright. So no, blurring wouldn't help us and the image should be deleted. --A.Savin 10:13, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Spectacled warbler in Zaghouan, Tunisia
You are clearly missing the point of having FPs. Ideally, we should have at least one image that is so great it can be viewed as an FP for each category and each article on the WikiProject. Saying that we don't need more FPs of birds because there are already hundreds of them, is simply ludicrous. We need more FPs (of all sorts of subjects), not less, if this is ever going to be the high quality project we strive to make it. And please stop referring to the front-page all the time with these boilerplate opposes, they are not a helpful critique. The front-page is an insignificant by-product, not a goal. Odd votes like this, are actually counterproductive since they keep many good photographers away from FPC, thereby limiting the selection of diverse photos here. Not all people show up voluntarily to such hostile environments to get their photos evaluated when photography is a hobby and not a livelihood you need to fight for. --Cart (talk) 11:16, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The same applies for illustrations and other images that are more educational than photos of which there are many thousands of the same subject. Prototyperspective (talk) 13:43, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Your reasoning sounds really warped to me. So in your opinion, what should we have FPs of since according to you, people and birds are now out of the question, and how many FPs do you think we should have on Commons to cover all articles and projects? You have only stated cons in your arguments, I'm interested in hearing your pros. I'm also curious about what categories here contain thousands of illustrations of the same subject. I do a lot of category sorting, and I don't recall coming across such categories. It would be interesting to see so many different takes on the same subject. --Cart (talk) 14:20, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I believe that all of Proto's opposing votes should be nullified. Criticizing pictures of birds and claiming they do not fit within COM:SCOPE, as well as using the Main Page as a reason to oppose, are unhelpful reasons. Additionally, Proto mentioned that they would "start voting oppose very often" because the image they nominated received multiple opposing votes due to quality and professionality. Based on their behavior, I doubt Proto understands how FPC works. Zzzs (talk) 15:28, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If we had a community decision that a user isn't fit to vote on FPC, for whatever reason, then all their votes (s & o) should be striked. That's how it's been done before with sockpuppets and disruptive users. Such a decision usually comes after a discussion on the FPC talk page. --Cart (talk) 15:38, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I believe this should be considered as a last resort if Proto continues with his disruptive behaviour on FPC. Zzzs (talk) 15:42, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That is true. All other efforts and attempts to resolve things like this, should first be made before doing something drastic. --Cart (talk) 15:45, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have posted on his talk page what COM:FPC is and warned him of his behaviour. Zzzs (talk) 16:49, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Fingers crossed then. I really miss the days when FPC was a forum for photographers, where we supported each other and tried our darndest to create the most stunning images for the WikiProject. --Cart (talk) 18:42, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Objectively false.
If the standards are this high, I'm going to vote by putting images under a lens of a high standard. Prototyperspective (talk) 21:04, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You wrote "images like this shouldn't be highlighted such as included on the front-page" as part of your reason for opposing, so I don't see how you can deny that and call it "false". --Cart (talk) 21:14, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was referring to Featured picture candidates are images that the community will vote on, to determine whether or not they will be highlighted as some of the finest on Commons. They aren't only shown on the frontpage but also highlighted with tools and methods that show featured pictures as well as more as a general thing where I disagree with that these "some of the finest on Commons". People turned this FP thing into a "some of the finest by photography technical criteria but nothing else" long ago but WMC is not a photography critique site (not saying technical photo critique shouldn't be done and that there shouldn't be photo communities on the site). Prototyperspective (talk) 21:37, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Commons as such may not be a photography critique site, but the COM:CRIT, QIC, VIC and FPC sure are. How else can we determine what photos are good. --Cart (talk) 21:48, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Their contents are already evaluated so technical flawlessness etc is already not the only criteria – people here just don't consider the criteria of educational content much usually. I quoted things that describe what FP is and what WMC is and from both I conclude that criteria of educational quality/degree is very appropriate. Prototyperspective (talk) 22:28, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • The background was chosen very carefully to be not so interesting. In the African bush, this is the nearest we can get to a nice bokeh. You would not see the water droplets otherwise. Charlesjsharp (talk) 07:46, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question This picture is upscaled? what's happened with the child face (right lower corner) --Wilfredor (talk) 21:25, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This must have been due to some window glass curve effect. I don't think the image was upscaled. The camera is capable of more than 100 MP. August (talk) 21:32, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Oppose Quality problem. F/2.8 = Limited depth of field. Out of focus foreground and background. ISO 5,000 = poor level of detail. Very high level of noise in the dark areas. Blown highlights on the beach. Also overprocessed (the whites are gray) -- Basile Morin (talk) 10:52, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support Thank you, RodRabelo7, for this nomination. I reconstructed the image from RAW using NX Studio, applying a vignetting fix. I used Topaz Denoise for noise reduction. The ISO was set to 1600 due to the lighting conditions. I didn't use a tripod to avoid drawing attention in a favela. The aperture was set to 2.8 because the subject was far away, and at such distances, a larger aperture isn't necessary. It’s normal because it is a night photo for some areas to appear very bright while others are darker. --Wilfredor (talk) 23:53, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose I dont see DoF problems, but 2.8 means very unsharp on edges. Bigest problem is very strong CA, i think hours could be spent here to solve it, after it highligthed boards etc. Tripod would solve, but you didnt try it. Alternative has same problems. What is blown cant get back. --Mile (talk) 07:46, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't use a tripod because it is a dangerous place to have such an expensive camera, I couldn't draw attention to myself so I had some problems in that place Wilfredor (talk) 12:42, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment I read that before, but i dont see how should this help to change my vote. You would have CA in any case, means a lot of work to solve it. I did like the photo in thumb, but when opened in 100 % not so much. --Mile (talk) 14:25, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Comment Its is, i wish you could do that with first one, or to try here midtones, shadows to incerase EV. 1st is too brigth, this one is a bit underexposed. --Mile (talk) 19:10, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose Level of blur of the background. Yes, DoF is a real problem, not only on edges, also at the distance. Low level of detail due to high ISO: 2500 here or 5000 / 1600 in the previous version(s), it is far too excessive when you need to lift the shadows in post-process. Shooting at dark night without tripod is hard (more than blue hour). The picture is okay to document the place, but technically not one of the finest. Empirical solutions when you don't have a tripod: 1) use a simple (and more discreet) monopod, which generally allows you to reach one full second quite easily, 2) use a wall, or any edge of surrounding structure, then stabilize the camera with stones, 3) walk with a friend who masters martial arts :-) or with good eyes, capable of monitoring, 4) Possible sometimes to manually take multiple shots at different focus points, then carefully assembly them at home, 5) Go at blue hour, when there is still more light. It will also bring an appealing sky, while reducing the highlights -- Basile Morin (talk) 03:18, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And it seems tilted to the right. 03:03, 27 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What bothers me more, is "the excessive noise reduction" (far more important than here for comparison), destroying the textures and details, in addition to the low DoF. When you zoom in, many areas appear almost solid color, like the sky, the mountains, and the transitions sometimes reveal artifacts -- Basile Morin (talk) 01:43, 28 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Black wheatear (Oenanthe leucura)
  • A high quality photo of a bird species like this does provide educational value. Not everyone will be aware that semiarid dessert supports significant birdlife. Charlesjsharp (talk) 16:56, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes but not much of it and my view is that it's not sufficient to be FP. It shows how this particular species looks like (like the other photos of the species) but the educational value (especially given the large amount of FP photos like that, the limited relevance to people and society, the existing other media about the bird, etc) is limited. I don't know why the criteria of educational value is not more important to other editors here given the WMC pillars / the contents of the scope page. SHORT DESCRIPTION
  • I just checked what I use: Depth map (B) Radius 8, Smoothing 4. I never change it. You have to go through each image cloning in the background where it is in focus then manually complete in Photoshop/Lightroom using the cloning tool. It is time-consuming. I've given up pointing out the ubiquitous stacking errors. Some voters don't seem to mind. Charlesjsharp (talk) 16:15, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • And you have to do the same for the background otherwise you get these sort of halos/patterns. Charlesjsharp (talk) 16:20, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You're throwing away a lot of what Helicon can do by sticking to the default settings and going straight to cloning. Here's the workflow I found most effective so far: 1) make several outputs with different settings (usually method B with a 4 to 20 radius, but sometimes also method C); 2) combine the best features of each output (with the 'Use other output as source' option mentioned above); 3) clean up the background by sourcing it from a single frame (usually Helicon sources it from multiple frames, messing up the bokeh); 4) clone any lingering errors (sometimes within Helicon, but most often using Photoshop's better tools) --Julesvernex2 (talk) 16:59, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
