Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:24, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Please not use PD-self for images you not created yourself or own the copyright. Use an applicable license tag, here it is HAER, see Category:Historic American Engineering Record for ~1000 examples. --Martin H. (talk) 06:27, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks, Martin. That's the perfect tag to use. I didn't know, because I've never uploaded PD images before and am not entirely image-saavy. (sad, as I'm an admin on the enwiki) I uploaded about 15-20 images, so I'll go through and fix them. Tedder (talk) 08:05, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
- Okay, I think I fixed them all, though I don't know what the identifier should be. I used HABS for most of them, as they were building records, and for the ones I didn't know what to use (since they were OWI, I just used the generic pd-usgov template. Tedder (talk) 08:19, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
- Great. The licensing of the various US Government agencies and projects is very diffused. For OWI we have PD-USGov-OWI, the supertemplate is PD-USGov, so if unsure what specific agency or project it is (but sure that it was created by or on behalf of the U.S. federal Government) use that. If you concentrate on the LOC you may find one of the various license tags created for the LOC collections usefull. See Commons:Copyright_tags#US_Library_of_Congress_public_domain_collections and Category:Images from the Library of Congress. --Martin H. (talk) 13:20, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
- I just noticed that the OWI template is a merger to the FSA. --Martin H. (talk) 13:22, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks. Looks like PD-USGov-FSA is probably what I should be using for FSA-OWI. Tedder (talk) 20:18, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

Did I miss something? The file itself doesn't seem to be geotagged? That prevents me from locating it. I grew up in w:Marylhurst, Oregon (w:West Linn, Oregon). I admit I haven't been back to the neighborhood in many decades. I do not recognize the neighborhood sign and cannot find it using w:Google Street View. Please advise. — Tim Chambers (talk) 00:06, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
