Structured Data - file captions coming this week (January 2019)

Hi all, following up on last month's announcement...

Multilingual file captions will be released this week, on either Wednesday, 9 November or Thursday, 10 November 2019. Captions are a feature to add short, translatable descriptions to files. Here's some links you might want to look follow before the release, if you haven't already:

  1. Read over the help page for using captions - I wrote the page on mediawiki.org because captions are available for any MediaWiki user, feel free to host/modify a copy of the page here on Commons.
  2. Test out using captions on Beta Commons.
  3. Leave feedback about the test on the captions test talk page, if you have anything you'd like to say prior to release.

Additionally, there will be an IRC office hour on Thursday, 10 January with the Structured Data team to talk about file captions, as well as anything else the community may be interested in. Date/time conversion, as well as a link to join, are on Meta.

Thanks for your time, I look forward to seeing those who can make it to the IRC office hour on Thursday. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 20:22, 7 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
File:Leon Morel-Fatio-Emmanuel Barcet-IMG 8930.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Reprint Crane-trepanation-img 0507 crop.jpg

Dear Rama,

I am working for the publisher Hogrefe in Göttingen (Germany) and I am currently preparing a book for psychotherapists about the treatment of migraine, in which the authors of the book would like to reprint your photograph „Crane-trepanation-img 0507 crop.jpg“.

We will cite the source as following: Photograph by Rama, Wikimedia Commons, Cc-by-sa-3.0-fr.

If we should use a different citation, please let me know: hannah.muelenz@hogrefe.de.

Best regards,

Dear Hannah,
This is perfect. Thank you very much for your attention to Free licences, as well as for your flattering interest in my image.
Best wishes for your publication! Rama (talk) 16:20, 14 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Category discussion warning

Alter-globalisation has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Ludovic Hirlimann

<Paul-muadib> Hi,
<Paul-muadib> a bunch of years ago I gave the right to use images from the bosnian war to wikimedia and Rama uploaded them
<Paul-muadib> one example is here.
<Paul-muadib> At the time he asked for higher resolution images.
<Paul-muadib> after a 11+ years I finally rescanned in higher res my pictures
<Paul-muadib> they are at https://www.hirlimann.net/bosnie/imagesHR/
<Paul-muadib> I have no clue on how to add higher res to the ones that got uploaded in 2006
<AntiComposite> Paul-muadib, I would suggest you start by asking Rama for help by leaving a message on https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Rama
<Paul-muadib> AntiComposite: will do
<dereckson> Paul-muadib: thanks for the hires :)
<Paul-muadib> I should have done that way earlier

Bonjour Ludovic,

Rama (talk) 12:30, 4 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Structured Data - development update, March 2019

This text is also posted on the Structured Data hub talk page. You can reply there with questions, comments, or concerns.

A development update for the current work by the Structured Data on Commons team:

After the release of multilingual file captions, work began on getting depicts and other statements ready for release. These were originally scheduled for release in February and into March, however there are currently two major blockers to finishing this work (T215642, T217157). We will know more next week about when depicts and statements can likely be ready for testing and then release; until then I've tentatively updated the release schedule.

Once the depicts feature is ready for testing, it will take place in two stages on TestCommons. The first is checking the very basics; is the design comfortable, how does the simple workflow of adding/editing/removing statements work, and building up help and process pages from there. The second part is a more detailed test of depicts and other statements, checking the edge-case examples of using the features, bugs that did not come up during simple testing, etc. Additionally we'll be looking with the community for bugs in interaction with bots, gadgets, and other scripts once the features are live on Commons. Please let me know if you're interesting in helping test and fix these bugs if they show up upon release, it is really hard to find them in a test environment or, in some cases, bugs won't show up in a testing environment at all.

One new thing is definitely coming within the next few weeks, pending testing: the ability to search for captions. This is done using the inlabel keyword in search strings, and will be the first step in helping users find content that is specifically structured data. I'll post a notice when that feature is live and ready for use.

Thanks, let me know if you have questions about these plans. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 21:34, 12 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Structured Data - early depicts testing

The Structured Data on Commons development team has the very basic version of depicts statements available for early testing on Test-Commons. You can add very basic depicts statements to the file page by going into the new “Structured Data” tab located below the "Open in Media Viewer button." You can use the Latest Files link in the left side nav bar to select existing images, or use the UploadWizard to upload new ones to test with (although those images won’t actually show up on the site). The test site is not a fully functional replica of Commons, so there may be some overall problems in using the site, but you should be able to get a general idea of what using the feature is like.

Early next week I will call for broad, community-wide testing of the feature similar to what we did for Captions, with instructions for testing, known bugs, and a dedicated space to discuss the feature as well as a simple help page for using statements. Until then, you're welcome to post on the SDC talk page with what you might find while testing depicts.

Thanks in advance for trying it out, you'll be hearing more from me next week. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 21:59, 21 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Revision deletion

Hi Rama. Would you mind deleting the 20:39, 1 May 2019 revision for File:Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford by Arthur Pond.jpg? I uploaded that particular revision without remembering to clear the metadata from the National Portrait Gallery, which happened to include copyright claims. Thanks! AlbanGeller (talk) 17:23, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Thank you for your contributions! Rama (talk) 17:25, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Can you also delete the redirects File:Robert-Gascoyne-Cecil-3rd-Marquess-of-Salisbury.jpg and File:Herbert-Henry-Asquith-1st-Earl-of-Oxford-and-Asquith.jpg? I have been trying to upload the uncropped images from the source under these filenames, and I'm not sure if it will let me. AlbanGeller (talk) 17:35, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Of course: I deleted the two pages, and renamed the files to these names. You can now find them at File:Herbert-Henry-Asquith-1st-Earl-of-Oxford-and-Asquith.jpg and File:Robert-Gascoyne-Cecil-3rd-Marquess-of-Salisbury.jpg, with redirects lefts at File:H H Asquith 1908.jpg and File:Robert cecil.jpg respectively (I hope that this was your intention). Do let me know if I can help with any further useful action or information. Rama (talk) 18:07, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for not making myself clear. I meant that I wanted to upload the uncropped originals under those filenames, while the cropped derivatives remained under the same filenames. AlbanGeller (talk) 18:11, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I get is now. Sorry.
Would uploading the uncropped originals into something like File:Herbert-Henry-Asquith-1st-Earl-of-Oxford-and-Asquith-original.jpg and File:Robert-Gascoyne-Cecil-3rd-Marquess-of-Salisbury-original.jpg be possible? It would be a bit simpler, but if you want I can undo the moves and free File:Robert-Gascoyne-Cecil-3rd-Marquess-of-Salisbury.jpg and File:Herbert-Henry-Asquith-1st-Earl-of-Oxford-and-Asquith.jpg for new uploads.
Cheers! Rama (talk) 18:19, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, though I think it would be simpler on my end if the moves were undone and File:Robert-Gascoyne-Cecil-3rd-Marquess-of-Salisbury.jpg and File:Herbert-Henry-Asquith-1st-Earl-of-Oxford-and-Asquith.jpg were freed for new uploads. Much appreciated. AlbanGeller (talk) 18:22, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Right, it should be the right way around this time. Can you confirm? Rama (talk) 18:30, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, all good. Many thanks! Clin AlbanGeller (talk) 21:00, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

FYI

Just an FYI, but I'm going to go ahead and close the OTRS ticket regarding Clarice Phelps, as it's been two weeks and they've not responded to your reply. I suppose we should go ahead and delete the image here. We can always undelete and continue on OTRS if they respond. If they do respond and somehow another ticket gets opened instead of the original, feel free to ping or email me. GMGtalk 22:20, 14 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Very reasonable. And thank you for your service in the OTRS, this is an invaluable function that used to have weeks of backlogs, your work and that of your colleagues is very much appreciated. Cheers! Rama (talk) 07:00, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Structured Data - testing qualifiers for depicts

As you might have seen, testing is underway for adding qualifiers to depicts statements. If you have not left feedback already, the Structured Data on Commons development team is very interested in hearing about your experience using qualifiers on the file page and in the UploadWizard. To get started you can visit Test-Commons and chose a random file to test out, or upload your own file to try out the UploadWizard. Questions, comments, and concerns can be left on the Structured data talk page and the team will address them as best as they can. Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 19:08, 11 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sculpture dédiée à Gou

Bonjour,

Bonne continuation ! Rama (talk) 19:29, 20 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Stele of Rames-E 16373-IMG 2662-black.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Changement d'auteur d'une image

Salut Rama,

--Gilliane (talk) 05:36, 27 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Structured Data - computer-aided tagging

The development team is starting work on one of the last planned features for SDC v1.0, a lightweight tool to suggest depicts tags for images. I've published a project page for it, please have a look. I plan to share this page with everyone on Commons much more broadly in the coming days. The tool has been carefully designed to try to not increase any workload on Commons volunteers; for starters, it will be opt-in for auto-confirmed users only and will not generate any sort of backlog here on Commons. Additionally, the tool is highly privacy-minded for the contributors and publicly-minded for the third party being used, in this case Google. The implementation and usage notes contain more information about these and other potential concerns as a starting place. It's really important that the tool is implemented properly from the start, so feedback is welcome. Questions, comments, concerns are welcome on the talk page and I will get answers as quickly as possible as things come up. On the talk page you can also sign up to make sure you're a part of the feedback for designs and prototype testing. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 17:57, 17 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Bonne continuation ! Rama (talk) 09:09, 19 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

My confusion

Sorry, I'm confused, are all the photos here of the Scale model Commerce de Paris, because some are labelled Ville de Paris? Broichmore (talk) 08:55, 25 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,
all these images are of the same scale model, the one with accession number "1 BF 32" at Musée national de la Marine. The ship depicted by "1 BF 32" was started as Ville de Paris and later renamed Commerce de Paris, which is the reason why the various images of "1 BF 32" have different names. I hope this makes things clearer, but do not hesitate to ask further should you have more questions.
Cheers! Rama (talk) 12:19, 25 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Kai3952 sent me a mail to request Autopatrol

I am extremely disappointed and hurt. I put my wholehearted trust in you, and you are the most trusted of all administrators. I'll email you whenever I have a privacy issue. I had NOT intended to make my email public. This email should not be made public due to my privacy, but you made it public.--Kai3952 (talk) 23:21, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies, I had not understood this.
Note that giving you the autopatrol status is recorded in public logs. Your interlocutors were aware that I was the one you had contacted, so there is little, if anything, that my message is disclosing that was not already public knowledge.
Sorry about this incident, I hope this will be resolved quickly and to your satisfaction. Rama (talk) 23:30, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Because you told them "Kai3952 sent me a mail to request Autopatrol"--Kai3952 (talk) 02:45, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I realise this, but that could easily be inferred from already-know elements — and indeed Alexis Jazz already knew (see here) before I wrote the message you mention. Again, sorry for the inconvenience. Rama (talk) 07:04, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, I inferred from the public log on Special:UserRights/Kai3952 that he must have mailed you with a request for autopatrol. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 06:49, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Demande de suppression de photos

Bonjour Rama,

AB — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2001:620:610:400:28E0:2F38:5A19:4DE3 (talk) 15:05, 6 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Bonsoir,
Rama (talk) 17:32, 6 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Reflection of person may also need black rectangle over face

Hi,

The image https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Usine_Bret_MG_1638.jpg may need an additional black rectangle over the person's reflection.

See the left side of the image, the left most window, near the handle for the right window.

The image is first image on the article //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water purification

Amicalement, Bernard de Go Mars (talk) 21:11, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Islamic art in the Louvre - Showcase 1B

Hello Rama, the box "wikidata" shows that this category would belong to "departement des antiquités égyptiennes" instead of " department of islamic art" . In wikidata, when we want to correct it, it shows "department of islamic art". I don't know how to correct this....Maybe you know.. Yours faithfully--Faqscl (talk) 10:13, 8 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Salut,
Bonne continuation ! Rama (talk) 10:20, 8 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
c'est bon, ça marche  ! Merci --Faqscl (talk) 13:01, 9 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, since you took this photo, do you know what's that thing hanging under the barrel of the gun? Is it a usual part of it? Thanks, pandakekok9 05:17, 9 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'd wager it is something to do with trench warfare, I'll ask around. Cheers! Rama (talk) 06:24, 9 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
So, mystery solved, I was far off the mark, and it is an early flash suppressor (or redirector, hence the shape). There is a video on Youtube (that the spam filter doesn't let me link to), titled "The St Etienne Mle 1907: France's Domestic Heavy Machine Gun", by Forgotten Weapons, which discusses it in some details at around 20 minutes into the clip. Problem on identification of ships

Hi Rama, Have a looks at these two images. File:Storck, Four Days Battle.jpg and File:Four Days battle mg 0501.jpg. You will see that there is a difference of opinion when it comes to identifying the ships (with the Reference Tooltips) on both pictures. I would be grateful for your thoughts on the matter? 19:02, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

Hello,
first, thank you for your confidence, which I find flattering, although it might be over generous since this is not the era that I know the best.
I understand that the question is whether the ship preceeding De Zeven Provincien is Eendracht or Hollandia? I have some reading to do to freshen up my knowledge enough to have an idea of a clue, it might take a bit of time.
Thank you again in any case, and take good care of yourself in these difficult times. Rama (talk) 14:01, 24 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You too! Just to clarify regarding Identification of the ships in the pictures, I identified the ships in File:Storck, Four Days Battle.jpg from the RMG / NMM websites' reading of the event. On the other hand File:Four Days battle mg 0501.jpg has a different reading but no mention is made of by whom or where. -Broichmore (talk) 12:15, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Lugalannatum/ Gutium

Hi Rama! These two categories refer to the same object, but I have no idea how to fuse them: Category:Inscription of Lugalanatum-AO 4783 and Category:Gutian inscription-AO 4783. Best regards! पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 09:00, 18 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,
I have fusionned the Wikidata item, moved all images to Category:Inscription of Lugalanatum-AO 4783 (which I thought was a more specific name) and left a redirect at Category:Gutian inscription-AO 4783.
The layout with the references is a bit of a tricky thing, I'll ask on the Village pump whether somebody knows of an elegant solution that would do justice to your excellent work without relegating the images of the category underneath the template.
Many thanks and good continuation! Rama (talk) 09:41, 18 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ornament on the hood (bonnet) of Jaguar image

Hello, My username is ileanadu, but I have been unable to log in for several months. However, I was curious about the hood ornament for this jaguar picture that lists you as the owner. I have never seen anything like it. Is it an elaborate image of a jaguar and if not, what is it? When was it in use

Louvre Image?

Hello Rama! I hope you are doing well, and thank you again for the formatting enquiry to the Village pump the other day. Regarding pictures from the Louvre Museum... would you by any chance have a better image of this carnelian bead ? It's quite special as it has a dedicatory inscription by Shulgi, and was found in Susa by Jacques de Morgan (Sb 6627) [3]. I found it from one of your panorama images "Room 305 display 4". Best regards! पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 10:50, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,
Not at the moment, I am afraid, but I'll make a note of paying special attention to it next time. I'll also pass the word to @Jastrow: and @Thesupermat: , two excellent photographers with keen eyes for archaeology and who will be in position to try when the Louvre reopens.
Cheers! Rama (talk) 11:25, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much! पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 11:56, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your expertise and your guidance! You are rendering a very distinguished service by pointing us to the most relevant items. Good continuation to you! Rama (talk) 11:58, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Rama! Would you by any chance have images of the following objects Near Eastern Antiquities in the Louvre - Room 8 Display 4, seals (in the red boxes), located in Room 8, display 4 of the Louvre Museum (objects from Susa). Best regards पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 06:56, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,
Sorry, I am afraid I do not have much left to publish anymore. But I will pass the word around in case one of my colleagues has anything, and I will most certainly put this on my list of things to do next time I can go in the Louvre, which hopefully will not be in a too distant future. If you have a list of things that would especially interest you in the occasion, I would be most interested to hear about it.
If that can of any consolation, and for further reference, here are the catalogue numbers and the links to Cartel, the Louvre database.
1) top left, round seal (Seal impression of Liburbeli in the service of Epirmupi Governor of Elam and vassal of Rimush and Manishtushu): this is Sb 6673 [4]
2) top right, trapezoidal fragment (Seal impression with inscription Eshpum Governor of Elam): this is Sb 6675 [5]
3) bottom , rectangular (Axe blade with inscription Ilishmani, scribe and shakkanakku of Elam ): this is Sb 14243 [6]
Hope to have better news for you soon. Cheers! Rama (talk) 08:24, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much Rama! I don't have so many images I am interested in, but if it's OK with you, if I keep finding some I will post them here! Best regards, and looking forward to your next visits to the Louvre Museum! पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 09:28, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I would be very grateful if you kept pointing to objects of particular interest, this is the best way for us to have them. Cheers! Rama (talk) 09:31, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Rama. I am adding this image , in case you can obtain a better one (references included in the description page). It is interesting, as it shows the quality of statuary at the time of Naram-Sin, which appears already very much in line with the beautiful statues known from the rulers of Lagash, such as the statue of Ur-Baba. Also a better image of the vase of Dudu of Akkad would be great, as the inscription is barely visible in the current image (especially the name of "Dudu" on the right, which should appear like two standing boots). Best regards! पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 14:59, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I would say "noted", but you did it yourself. Thank you for the catalogue numbers, that is very convenient to find the items in the exhibit. Hopefully I can go on a photographic expedition sooner than later. Cheers! Rama (talk) 14:02, 24 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Stele of the Vultures

The stele in 1969 (top), and damaged in 2005 (bottom)

Hello Rama! Since you seem to known the Louvre very well, I would have an enquiry about the Stele of the Vultures (particularly the relief with the Phalanx): the relief seems to have been heavily damaged sometime between 1969 and 2005 (before-after photograph attached). Would you by any chance know what happened? Best regards पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 05:30, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,
I am afraid I that this goes beyond my superficial culture. I see that a good deal of the scientific articles about this stele dates from around 1900, so I would not rule out that they had restored the bas-relief and that this was later undone, or that one of the image could actually by a duplicate. I have transmitted the question to a friend who might know or have access to people who do, but this is still a long shot.
Cheers! Rama (talk) 09:10, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello
my friend confirms that this is a case of de-restauration. Cheers! Rama (talk) 10:42, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Very interesting! Now that you say it, it is true that the "broken" portions in 2005 do tend to appear as lighter patches in the 1969 photograph. Great info. Thank you! पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 11:05, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Priest-King

Hi Rama! One more would be great to have: Musee du Louvre, Paris, Sb 2125. It shows a curious temple, and an Uruk priest-king (fragmentary) killing enemies. Best regards! पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 12:29, 29 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nice one, noted. Cheers! Rama (talk) 12:42, 29 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Rama! +1 ... It would be great if you could have a better image of this stele of the Nubian Pharaoh Taharqa in Room 19/318 [7]. Best regards! पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 06:45, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ah yes, there is room for improvement here. Can't wait to go back, when I do I will notify you in advance to make sure we have everything on my todo list. Cheers! Rama (talk) 07:31, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Great! Thank you so much! I will add new items of interest if I find any! Best regards पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 12:32, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Looking forwards to it, and I hope I bring back usable images in July. Cheers! Rama (talk) 15:58, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Rama! In anticipation of your next visit to the Louvre, it might be possible to get a better image of this beautiful gold object belonging to Ahmose I. It is E7168, but I am not sure if it is currently visible. Best regards! पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 05:48, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello पाटलिपुत्र, I will keep an eye open for it. Cheers! Rama (talk) 10:52, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello पाटलिपुत्र, here are the preliminary results, fresh from this morning. No detouring nor Q-Item yet, I hope I will do them in good time.

Cheers! Rama (talk) 17:05, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Rama, thank you so much for these fantastic images!! I will take a few days to incorporate them into articles, but they will make wonderful additions!! I envy that you were able to visit the Louvre with so few visitors right now... Please accept a small token of my appreciation... Thank you so much again!! पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 18:22, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I am honoured to award to you the Order of Ashurbanipal, consisting in four rotating barnstars, for your outstanding contributions to Wikipedia. Each and every one of your photographs is an invaluable contribution to knowledge. Thank you! पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 18:22, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ahah, thank you, glad you liked them.
I wonder whether the bead Sb 6627 might be on display the wrong way round, I cannot make out lots of details of the writing, and it seems to be inverted compared to the old one.
Thank you for the suggestions, I seized the opportunity to photograph several seals since I had the equipment to do so.
Cheers and good continuation! Rama (talk) 22:40, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
𒀭𒂄𒄀 𒀭𒌦𒈠𒈾 Shulgi Dingir Kalam-ma-na: "Divine Shulgi, God of his land" [1]
I am looking forward to your photographs of seals! Carnelian bead Sb 6627 is not too badly positionned but the inscription is quite faint indeed. The full inscription reads "Ningal, his mother, Shulgi, god of his land, King of Ur, King of the four world quarters, for his life dedicated (this)" in : The Archaeology of Elam, p. 134, Plate 5.2 , and in your photograph it is possible to read the portion "Divine Shulgi/ God of his land", which is not a bad portion to choose for display! (the cleaning lady must have some knowledge of cuneiform)... I've made a graphical transcription. Thank you again! पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 05:54, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have another expedition planned for tomorrow, I will try to return to Sb 6627 and see whether I can maybe get a slightly higher and lower angle, hoping to catch the rest of the inscription. Fingers crossed. Cheers! Rama (talk) 13:29, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Good news!! If so, can you also try to catch the extreme right of the Dudu vase inscription? It has the name of Dudu (two "boots", one on top of the other ), and maybe a sharper angle to the right could catch it better?? Best regards! पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 15:26, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Will do! Cheers! Rama (talk) 20:26, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, I have uploaded the images of the vase I took yesterday, you can find them at Category:Alabaster vase of Dudu of Akkad-AO 31549. As you can see from the annotation of File:Room 228 of the Louvre display case 2-IMG 9003.JPG, it is in a corner and not very easy to photograph, especially without a tripod (I had to crawl and aim my main camera without its viewfinder), so I hope I got one fit for the purpose. To do better than than we would probably need to have the item removed from the display — not something they do on an everyday basis obviously.
Now onwards to Sb 6627. Cheers! Rama (talk) 08:57, 19 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello पाटलिपुत्र, and here is what I come up with the bead: File:Carnelian bead with dedicatory inscription by Shulgi-Sb 6627-IMG 8660.jpg. Here again the quality is mediocre and the angle is not ideal, but we are pushing the limits of what one can do free-handed and through a display glass. I hope we get to be in sufficiently good terms with the conservators to have access to such items one day, until then we have to improvise. Cheers! Rama (talk) 09:48, 19 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Rama, thank you so much, these are great improvements! "Dudu" is clearly visible in this image. And the inscription on the carnelian bead is almost much easier to read. Thank you so much for your time and efforts! पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 13:11, 19 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Glad I could be a little bit useful! Do not hesitate to tell me if you have further ideas of important items, there are chances I might do another trip in September. Cheers! Rama (talk) 19:37, 19 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @पाटलिपुत्र: , I have juste added a bit of new material at Category:Rectangular axe-Sb 14243 that might be better support for your transcriptions. Thank you for your amazing work and good continuation! Rama (talk) 08:49, 12 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
