How to model various types of locations in structured data, for files on Wikimedia Commons

Caution: distinction between location of where the file was produced and what is depicted in the file[edit]

This has traditionally been done via the two templates {{Location}} and {{Object location}}. Here we are modelling the first of the two.

Caution: distinction between a digital file, and a creative work shown/depicted in a file[edit]

When a file on Wikimedia Commons shows/depicts a creative work, location information about the file and about the depicted work are usually very different.

It is best to describe the creative work as an item on Wikidata to keep this distinction clear.

(example)

Modeling various locations related to Wikimedia Commons files[edit]

Type of metadata Notes Wikidata property Status
Location we see A specific location we see in the image depicts (P180)
Where the photo was made location of creation (P1071) or located in protected area (P3018)
Where the photographer is standing location of the point of view (P7108)
Street the photograph is about located on street (P669)
Coordinates of the photographer Same as {{Location}} coordinates of the point of view (P1259) (optional qualifier heading (P7787) and elevation above sea level (P2044)) ✓ Done
Coordinates of the depicted object Same as {{Object location}} coordinates of depicted place (P9149) (optional qualifier heading (P7787) and elevation above sea level (P2044)) ✓ Done

Properties not to use[edit]

These properties shouldn't be used and will give a constraint violation

Property Replacement Notes
location (P276) location of creation (P1071) or depicts (P180) Use location of creation (P1071) if it's about where to photo was created. Use depicts (P180) for what location is depicted
located in the administrative territorial entity (P131)
country (P17)
location of creation (P1071) location of creation (P1071) should contain the most specific location item. located in the administrative territorial entity (P131) & country (P17) can be derived from this item.
recording location (P8546) location of creation (P1071) location of creation (P1071) should be used for consistency
coordinate location (P625) coordinates of depicted place (P9149) coordinate location (P625) is ambiguous so it is replaced by coordinates of depicted place (P9149)

General notes and remarks[edit]

  • Both Location and Coordinates and are wanted since they can help answer different kind of SPARQL queries.
