About Image Format

I am trying to upload a file using UploadWizard which format is JPG. But when I try to upload file it will automatically change its format from JPG to jpg (small alphabet). Please tell me how I can upload it with format JPG using UploadWizard.WeNeverSing (talk) 11:06, 1 December 2016 (UTC)

Wrong "Photographs taken on ..." category

File:Defense.gov_News_Photo_040129-D-2987S-072.jpg was taken on 2004-01-29, and there is Taken on 29 January 2004 in the file information. However you don't find it in Category:Photographs taken on 2004-01-29, but in Category:Photographs taken on 2004-12-05. Does anyone know why? -- Robert Weemeyer (talk) 06:45, 5 December 2016 (UTC)

Not misleading, but potentially confusing? That may be why Zoranzoki21 requested the deletion a few minutes after creating this redirect. This filename was that of a deleted file. Using the exact same filename (including the parenthesis) for creating a redirect to a different file might cause a confusion. If it's not deleted, then I think it should at least have as its target the category, not an arbitrarily chosen file. That would help remove the misleading aspect of recreating the filename of a deleted file and redirect it to a different file. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:24, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi, It means it is an account running with an automated tool, called a robot or bot, not a personal account of someone. A bot account is under the responsibility of a person, but it is not the personal account of the person. See Commons:Bots for more information. How do I contact Wojciech Migda, who is listed as the author of the picture of Inbee Park, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2009_Women's_British_Open_%E2%80%93_Inbee_Park_(2).jpg.

(Edit conflict) Well, I do not see, where you read this, but Woiciech has added his Commons name in parentheses with a link to his user page, so in theory you could leave a message on his talk page. Practically Woiciech was lastly active here in May this year, hence it it unsure, whether he will react. On his (linked) Polish Wikipedia ressource he was only active until March 2014, in the English Wikipedia the latest edit was in March this year (see en:User:Wmigda). — Speravir – 00:45, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
There's a bit on his user page that says "feel free to contact me". Just to be clear: there is no requirement to contact the author in order to use files from Commons as long as you are willing to comply with the licensing requirements shown on the file description page. Using En wiki images in kn wiki

Hi, I wish to reuse this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahathir_Mohamad#/media/File:Mahathir_2007.jpg image on kn-wiki. Reason being I tried to download this image to local machine & upload to kn-wiki. I keep getting error saying such a file already exists... I couldn't hotlink this particular image either thru en:image--<link>.... I couldn't locate this piece of info in help section. Kindly help me. Thanks. how to upload a powerpoint file

Hello,

I created a powerpoint file that I want to include in a page I am writing. I can save it as a JPEG or other formats if that helps.

How do I upload this file? I tried with the JPEG version using the wizard for Commons, but got the error message "This action has been automatically identified as harmful, and therefore disallowed"

I don't know why this action is deemed to be harmful or what to do about it.

Hello Roger,
You triggered an automatic filter that prevents new users from uploading small JPEG images. This filter is intended to reduce copyright violations (images taken from the internet) being uploaded to Commons. In this case it was a false positive.
If your Powerpoint file is a graphic image then PNG is a better format choice and will not trigger this filter.
Once you have more than 25 edits in Commons the trigger will no longer check your uploads. MKFI (talk) 08:31, 3 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi. I added the club logo for Sai Gon FC a few months ago - however, it was removed as "deleted from Commons by INeverCry because: Copyright violation," However, I spoke to the club today and they confirmed that the image has not been copyrighted and can be used freely. How can I prove this?   • Under the Berne convention, copyright exists by default, so the logo is almost certainly copyrighted, even if its owners don't know that. In fact, if they don't know about that, it is unfortunately likely that the designer still owns the copyright, because that sounds like they didn't know they had to have the designer sign it over to them.
  • We need the copyright holder to provide either a sufficiently free license or a release into the public domain. See COM:OTRS for how they can do that. - Jmabel ! talk 20:10, 3 December 2016 (UTC)

Responding to Quality Image Review

I uploaded several pictures for the Wiki loves monuments campaign in September. I have just noticed that one of them, "Parham, St Peter's Church.jpg " was nominated for Quality Image Status. The reviewer, W.carter, thought it needed a more detailed description. I have now made the suggested change. Is it too late? And how do I contact W.carter to acknowledge this useful advice? You can contact a user by leaving your message on their discussion page. In this case, the page User talk:W.carter. That user can also probably also answer your question about how archived nominations can be reactivated. Or you can ask on the page Commons talk:Quality images candidates. I work for Life-Link Friendschip Schools and I want to upload the logo on Commons. I received the logo from the head of Life-Link Friendschip Schools. However, we both don't know who made the logo for our organisation.   • You don't point to an online example of the logo. If it's simple enough (just text and/or simple geometric shapes) it wouldn't be eligible for copyright. Otherwise, to upload it on Commons you are going to need to work out who owns the copyright and get their permission.
  • If your real goal here is to use the logo in the English-language Wikipedia, then bypass Commons and use the English-language Wikipedia's provisions for non-free images. - Jmabel ! talk 16:49, 29 November 2016 (UTC)

    Based on the Google cache, it seems the logo in question is https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/100185310735322779430/albums/profile/5673831368509853538. That would be above the threshold of originality required for copyright protection in most jurisdictions. A simple geometric shape would be something like a circle, an octagon or a chevron.
    If you are not autoconfirmed on English Wikipedia, you can use their files for upload wizard to ask an experienced user to upload the file. LX (talk, contribs) 13:32, 30 November 2016 (UTC)

Finding Creative Commons Images

After a bit of adjustment of the spelling, I'm guessing you're looking for information on one of the files in Category:Phryne by Henryk Siemiradzki. Information about who reproduced the painting photographically, if available, is shown on the file description of each respective file. For example, File:Henryk Siemiradzki, Frine alle feste di Poseidone a Eleusi, 1889.jpg was photographed by Sailko, who can be contacted by posting at User talk:Sailko.   • @Unschool: , that's not on Commons, it's on the English-language Wikipedia. Commons doesn't allow non-free images. If you have a comparable justification to use a different US News cover in an English-language Wikipedia article, you would upload it on the English-language Wikipedia (not on Commons, not allowed here) and use the same {{Non-free magazine cover}} and {{Non-free use rationale}} template used on the page you linked to (with an appropriate rationale provided), rather than the usual {{Information}} template. - Jmabel ! talk 05:50, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

Deinterlacing template

Nothing listed in Category:Video cleanup templates, so the best you can do without creating a new template is probably a generic {{Cleanup}}. (That's a redirect to {{Cleanup image}}, which is in Category:Image cleanup templates, but there's nothing image-specific in its wording or the category it applies.) What other information could I provide for this file? Cause I've been inform that there isn't enough sufficient information and it isn't valid or tag. How do I resolve that?

For the record I found this image on another website which happens to be Tnasylum.com from an article page at this link http://www.tnasylum.com/2012/10/shadows-and-light.html?m=1 so it's obvious the image is already been used even though it's from a photobucket.com account not sure if it's through permission though, so I figure the image is free licenses. --Homey104 (talk) 23:12, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

Help finding a photo

I have been trying to find free Creative Commons Images for Petra Cetkovská from 2009 and 2016. Specifically for 2009, at the 2009 BNP Paribas Open and specifically for 2016, at the 2016 Australian Open. I love adding photos to Wikipedia Pages to make te page more interesting, but I haven't been able to find any images from 2009 or 2016 for Petra Cetkovská. What should I do? I tried flickr, but when I contact people on flickr, they have not been answering me. Is there a website specifically I could use to find pictures of all tennis players that has free Creative Commons Images? Bryson483 (talk) 00:45, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

  • You keep asking essentially the same question over and over. You want free images of something (professional tennis matches) where there are probably few or no free images to be had. Best of luck (honestly) in finding them, but as for what you should do: either you should persist at seeking such images or you should give up. Concern regarding copyright of an image for book project

Dear Editing Commons: Help desk (new section), I am a 63-year-old retired Special Education teacher for Milwaukee Public Schools. I am in the process of completing a book project entitled, “Looking into Our Grandparents Immigrant Eyes.” I’ve gathered 240 family photographs of 1st & 2nd generation European Immigrant families who arrived in southeastern Wisconsin beginning in the late 1830’s. The transportation route used by the great majority of these families to our territory/state, during those early years, was the Erie Canal & Great Lakes steamer routes. I would like to provide some illustration of the Erie Canal route many of these immigrant families took to come here to Milwaukee. I have read the “terms & conditions” of your website use. I would then request your legal permission or ask that you direct me to the copyright owner of the map you provide on your website identified as:“Erie Canal Map 819- x 355 jpeg read tiger.com.” This will be my 3rd book related to local history & have never been motivated by personal profit with any one of them. I have probably invested more in production than what I earned in profit for either of my 2 previous projects. I simply have a love for local history & love to share it with others!!! my own images are being rejected

I am trying to upload one of my own images to Wikimedia Commons. It is a picture of someone using a BVLOS ground control station to operate a drone, extracted from a still frame of a high resolution video I created. I own exclusive rights to the image.

I keep getting this error on submission: "We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. See the guide to make sure the file is acceptable and learn how to upload it on Wikimedia Commons."

I have used another image from the same sequence in a post I made on our website. This is the image we have used: https://www.kongsberggeospatial.com/images/news/feature/iris_gcs.jpg

I can't show you the image I'm trying to upload, because I can't upload it. It's a similar image taken in the same session.

I wanted to introduce this image for a new article on BVLOS. There are very few images of actual BVLOS ground control stations that show an actual live mission, so this topic can not readily be illustrated with a different image.

Can you suggest how I can upload an image from this sequence without getting slagged for violating copyright on my own photos? --Chris Ivey (talk) 23:54, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

@Chris Ivey: you triggered an automated filter intended to stop new users from uploading copyright violation taken from web. In this case it was a false positive: the trigger checks the size of the image and expects a JPEG file to be taken with a camera or mobile phone with a fairly high megapixel rate. The video still frames you tried to upload (even HD) are below the limit and so they triggered this error.
The filter checks specifically cross wiki uploads from Wikipedia side. Chris, can you try to upload the images directly to Commons: Special:UploadWizard? MKFI (talk) 07:39, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

I cannot upload my photo

..to the page I have been editing. I have an account, have done more than 10 edits and have used wiki for weeks now. It's a simple photo that I took of the front of my house- the Wiki page is about the house. I get a "something went wrong" warning when I attempt to upload it. Not really sure what the issue is!   • I'm not sure what you mean by uploading "to the page I have been editing". You upload to Commons, then "transclude" to the page by making a link like [[something.jpg|thumb|caption]] there. Assuning this is about the upload to Commons, what tool are you using to upload? The Upload Wizard or something else? Are you uploading from a computer or a phone? - Jmabel ! talk 03:00, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
@Mylockport: I presume you tried to add a new image to White-Pound House? When you tried to upload the image you triggered an automated filter designed to stop people from taking images from the web and uploading them to Commons. In this case it was a false positive: the filter does a simple size comparison for uploads by new users. The image you tried to upload is quite small (640x615 pixels) and triggered the error. Do you have a higher resolution image? You do not need to scale down images before uploading them - our image scaler can handle that automatically. MKFI (talk) 07:54, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

Handwritten notes

It's not calligraphic. It fits into Category:Post-it notes, but some other tag for Chinese language would be good. --Djadjko (talk) 23:42, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

trouble uploading video

Deleting old image versions?

If an image has non-free versions in its history (aka copyright violations) but the current version would be OK (see File:Sanjay Dutt at the launch of T P Aggarwal's trade magazine 'Blockbuster' 09.jpg for example), how does one request the deletion of specific historical image versions while keeping the current valid version? En-wiki has a specific cleanup template for this request, but I couldn't find the analogous feature on Commons. GermanJoe (talk) 14:29, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

I don't think there is a particular template. You can use any way that will draw the attention of an administrator. For example, in a simple case, you can request a speedy deletion, specifying the versions to be deleted. In the case you link to, I would suggest a note on the administrators' noticeboard, because this case seems related to actions by a group of accounts on other files and administrators might want to look into it. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:26, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

Only showing 10 file revisions

When looking at a file that has more than 10 old versions (such as File:ElectoralCollege2016.svg), only the 10 most recent show up, unlike the 50 that used to. I cannot find anywhere in Preferences to change this, and when I click "older 50" or "older 500", it still displays only 10 revisions. I've tried everything: shutting my computer down, purging the cache, logging out of Commons, but nothing seems to work. --MB298 (talk) 20:13, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

@MB298: Whoops, this looks like my fault. I recently made the change [1] to limit these lists to 10 files in response to a suggestion that they are overwhelming (m:2016 Community Wishlist Survey/Categories/Commons#Allow hiding chosen versions of images on File page), but it was definitely not supposed to disallow overriding it to display 50 or 500. Random missing HotCat links

I have used HotCat for many years with no problem. Currently, when I click on a file description page, HotCat links (+- etc) are missing more often than not. I need one, two or three page refreshes to make the links appear. The problem has been evident for about the last month. Running Win7 and Firefox 50.0.2. At about the time it started, my PC had one or more redirect type of trojan infection. Various attempts were made to clean up, including removal of some unrecognisable programs, hundreds of cookies, etc. Also, amended preferences at Commons and Firefox, but no apparent effects of those. Finally cleaned PC with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, but HotCat glitch remains unresolved. HotCat documentation doesn't seem to offer solution. @PeterWD: When you encounter the issue next time, can you please open Firefox's error console (Ctrl+Shift+J, or Menu → Developer → Browser Console), click "CSS" at the top to filter out these errors (there will be lots of them, none of them related to this issue), and then copy-paste everything else from that window here? Problem with 'pipe character' magic word

Hi! Globetrotter19 reported me, that something doesn't work perfectly with the {{!}} magic word. If you upload a file using Upload Wizard and with a description has more than one language versions, the last language link doesn't work. It should start with the {{lang_code|1=, but it starts with {{lang_code{{!}}1=. These two variants should give back here the same result (see mw:Help:Magic_words#Other), but in this case don't, see an example here. Is it a know issue? Samat (talk) 22:58, 10 December 2016 (UTC)

{{en{{!}}Text}} is definitely not supposed to work the same as {{en|Text}}, that would kind of defeat the purpose of {{!}} (compare: {{en|Text|Text}}, {{en|Text{{!}}Text}}).
This rather looks like a bug in UploadWizard, which will replace | with {{!}} in the descriptions to avoid breaking the outer template syntax. This is supposed to skip pipe characters that are part of template syntax, but it seems to have malfunctioned here. However, I can't reproduce this issue myself (it definitely doesn't happen for all uploads with multiple descriptions) – have you seen any other cases where this happened? @Matma Rex: according to Globetrotter19's answer, this bug happened at his every single uploads (about 500 pieces) in the last more than one month (except the ones he uploaded with Commons:CropTool). @Matma Rex: you are right, the second is the actual case. Didn't think on that :) But I think, we should find a way to make the input fields more robust, prepared for this kind of unexpected usage. There is a similar issue with the Visual Editor, where the page can collapse or make unexpected errors if I wrote wikicode into it. @Samat: @Globetrotter19: I don't think it's possible to handle this in a satisfactory manner. It would make the feature more complicated, so when it fails, it will fail in more complicated ways. And we'd have to maintain this code forever; I don't see how this would still work if Commons eventually switches to structured data for file description pages, for example.
Is there some way we could support your use case? I understand that filling in the separate fields is annoying is you already have the whole description as wikitext. If you're importing this from somewhere, perhaps some tool which can do mass imports would be more convenient, e.g. Commons:Pattypan? Matma Rex (talk) 23:13, 12 December 2016 (UTC)

Dear editors: My husband came across the above photo and brought it to my attention. It is listed as part of the "Picturing Canada" collection. However, the image does not show Whitby Harbour in Ontario, Canada, which looks like THIS. Instead it appears to be Whitby Harbour, North Hampshire. The copyright status tags are ok. The policy of Commons requires a tag for the status in the country of origin of the photo, i.e. the country of the first publication of the photo, which in this case is probably Canada, since it was registered for copyright in Canada by a registrant doing business in Canada. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:15, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
Files like this are in the Category:Images from the Canadian Copyright Collection at the British Library because they are images registered for copyright in Canada (not necessarily taken in Canada, although most probably were) and the reproductions in this Commons category were made from copies in the British Library. We can see that there was nothing wrong in the file name, in the description and in the categories (it was uncategorized thematically) when the file was uploaded. Files mass-uploaded from archive websites are often insufficiently described and insufficiently categorized, which can make it difficult for users to add details. In this case, in 2013, a user of Commons assumed mistakenly that the photo showed Canada and added thematic categories relating to Canada. When you find miscategorized files, you can correct the categories, like Jmabel already did for this file, and you can add a more detailed description when useful. By the way, there is probably the same type of addition of wrong categories by the 2013 user at File:Contemplation Fishermen (HS85-10-36213).jpg and at File:After the storm (HS85-10-36212) original.tif. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:15, 12 December 2016 (UTC)

I see many official portraits of politicians on Wikipedia, however Wikimedia Commons says I can only upload it if it's over 150 years old.

Duplicates/redirects

I have a doubt with better versions of images and duplicates... I uploaded 3000 covers of a magazine in high quality. I founded low quality versions of a few of those used right now in various proyects. What is the better approach to do the merge? A redirect in the low quality version? Duplicate template?   • Tricky question, because they are not exactly duplicates (different crop). I'd say yours is very clearly superior. I suspect that they should be cross-linked as alternative versions, and that you should tag the less good version with {{Superseded}}. I'd also support replacing any uses in other projects.
  • Because they aren't exact duplicates, any process of redirect and deletion would probably have to go through Commons:Deletion requests. I'd be in favor of deletion and redirect, myself, but I think just doing it unilaterally would violate our processes.   1. Are you specifically asking about adding locally in one of the language-specific Wikipedias, or are you asking about uploading herch e in Commons?
  2. Are you uploading a photo you took yourself (should be no problem) or something that someone else created (much trickier from a licensing point of view, and it would be useful for you to indicate (for example, with a URL) what you want to upload.
  3. If you are using the Upload Wizard, which most beginners use, you will be prompted for licensing information and offered several the most common choices.

Uploading a photo that is not my work??

I am trying to upload a photo that is not my own work, but I have purchased the work from a photography company. How do I do this without having the photo taken off wiki commons?

  • Assuming the work is copyrighted (which most photos are by default in most countries), it is very unlikely that such a work would be OK for you to upload here. When you purchase a physical photo, you are not purchasing intellectual property rights such as copyright. Jmabel, the transfer of rights and the physical photo. We usually refer to this as assignment which is not the same as licensing. This is still subject to the nature of the work and the laws of the country where the rights are transferred. Meanwhile, purchasing the photos does not implies that the purchaser owns the copyright of the photos, the same way I cannot say "I own the copyright of The Gods are not to blame" simply because I bought the book from Ola Rotimi. This is why I asked if there is a written, or signed contract stating a transfer has taken place in form of assignment in which the assignee becomes the new owner of the copyright. Is the dust jacket of a book (no artwork: just the title, author's name, publisher's blurb, and price) published in England in 1907 in the public domain? The author died slightly less than 70 years ago, but surely that has nothing to do with it, since the copyright, if any, would belong to the publisher rather than the author, no? I am trying to upload the logo of Grunt which is a open-source software. I am guessing it is not trademarked, but I cannot be sure. How can I confirm this? Also, I am unable to find designer's name and date of publication for this image.   • Trademark is not an issue, except for possibly using the {{Trademark}} template. The question is whether it is copyrighted. You don't point to an example online, but this is presumably recent enough that if it rises to the threshold of originality necessary for copyright, then it is copyrighted. - Jmabel ! talk

Images not working at all

Hi I've just joined Wikimedia Commons but not one of the images is showing up. There is the 'broken link' box in the top left corner of every image on every page. I have tried cutting and pasting the url and it is still a blank box. Please help.

  • I assume this is about File:User सन्दिप अधिकारी.jpg. You did not provide any license information at all. To upload images here, you must select a license; you were notified of this on your talk page, did nothing about it for 8 days, and the image was deleted.
  • A typical, appropriate license would be {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}} (click on that to see the terms).
  • At this point, I believe if you want it undeleted your best bet would be Commons:Undeletion requests.
  • I notice that your only contributions to Commons are this image (a selfie), your own user page, and your question here. You seem to have a similar pattern on several other wikis. It's fine if you want to upload one or a few images for your own user pages, but only if you intend to actually be active on the projects with substantive contributions, not if all you are doing is making yourself a bunch of promotional user pages. If you've made substantive contributions in one of the languages that I can't read, you should probably mention that when requesting undeletion, and it is more likely that your request will be looked upon favorably. - Jmabel ! talk 05:27, 12 December 2016 (UTC)

I mentioned deletion in my original question. This is a file to which a reference on nl.wikipedia was removed manually a full week after its deletion on Commons. Dinosaur918 (the user who removed the reference) reports some 50 similar cases in the past week. Richard 20:30, 14 December 2016 (UTC)
I see that on en.wp the link to this file was removed by a different bot [2], Filedelinkerbot, which does not seem to exist on nl.wp. Setting watchlist to "all pages visited" needs confirmation?

Maybe I simply never realised that behavior, but did the watchlist always require another confirmation after clicking the "Mark all pages visited" button? Or has something changed recently? A small box with some text "Are you sure blah blah?" pops up and needs to be accepted before the watchlist is reset (I am using Firefox 50.0.2, Windows XP, and Vector skin). If this additional confirmation step is intended, is is possible to disable this behavior for single users with some .css or .js setting? GermanJoe (talk) 04:40, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Possible non-free file?

There has been a little bit of contention over the Wikipedia article David L. Richards, which started with one editor (Sophia1778) trying to change the article on the page to something more recent. I've emailed Richards via his university e-mail and he's confirmed that Sophia1778 is his wife and he also commented that the photo is incorrect - I'll ask him to elaborate on this. The photo in question is File:David L. Richards.jpg and the image that Richards and his wife wanted added is this one.

One thing I've noticed, however, is that the person who uploaded the photograph may not have actually held the image's copyright. I found this page which looks like it might be from 2011. It has a portion of the image, but not the full thing. Something that I also noted is that the image itself says that the source is "University of Connecticut", which would imply that the uploader Daver68 does not hold the image copyright but possibly took it from Richards's staff bio or possibly a course page. Adding picture under Creative Common License: allowed?

Dear Sir/Madame,

I want to upload a picture from someone else unto the Wikipedia Upload Wizard, but am not sure whether this is legally allowed. I asked the person who made the picture (of a virus) for permission, and he gave me the following answer:

'You have our permission as long as it has proper attribution (credit) and you use the typical Creative Commons language Wiki uses for attribution.'

So does this mean that uploading is allowed, if I add his name as a reference? If not, is there another way that makes it possible to still add the picture? E.g. to upload the picture to my own account? Or maybe it is allowed on the Dutch page?

I've added above mentionned file to Wiki COmmons. There is no registered copyright. I also have no clue how I can find such a thing. I've requested this (and some other) picture from a museum I'm working with in order for this wiki page. These pictures are exhibits they have at the museum or photo's they have in their archive. They know nothing of a copyright on those pictures.

What am I to do in such a case in order to use these pictures?

  • There are two different copyrights involved here: the copyright of the banner and the copyright of the photo. The photo is the simpler. You say "Zelf foto", so I presume you are the photographer. Since this is a 3-dimensional object, your photo inherently has a copyright, and you will need to provide an appropriate license, just like with any other photo you take.
  • The underlying object is trickier. Given that it's a museum, they probably have various information that you haven't given about the item (e.g. an acquisition number but most importantly at least an approximate date). Those would determine the copyright status. Most likely it is in the public domain, and all we would need is the license for your photo, but it is imaginable that the banner itself is copyrighted, in which case, if the author is unknown, we are almost certainly out of luck because there would be no way to obtain that required license. - Jmabel ! talk 16:55, 16 December 2016 (UTC)

       Hiya, To be honest. I've got no idea what you're talking about. The banner is made in the 1800's, when the specific shoemakers guild was founded. The museum does not have any papers, licences
       or anything like that which proves it's copyrighted material, either for the banner itself or the picture of the banner. The same goes for a bunch of other pictures I have used in my 
       wikipage Schoennijverheid in Izegem. They told me it is free material, even though they don't want others to use it without their permission (which is understandable). I've been working with the 
       people of the museum in order to have as much usable information on the subject as possible (since it's a academic assignment for my education as social worker. Since I have their permission and the

  • If the banner was made in the 1800s, I think it's a pretty safe bet to say the banner itself is covered by {{PD-anon-70-EU}}. But it remains the case that the banner is a 3-dimensional object, someone took the photo, the photo is inherently copyrighted, and if there has been no transfer of rights the photo belongs either to whoever took it or (if it was work for hire) to their employer. If an employee of the museum took the photo as part of their job (which sounds like the case, though you haven't spelled it out) then the museum presumably owns the copyright of the photo and only they can grant a license to reuse it. If I correctly understand "They … don't want others to use it without their permission" as "They don't want others to use it without crediting them", then the appropriate license would probably be {{CC-BY}} or {{CC-BY-SA}}. Unless they already have posted the image elsewhere on the web with an indication of such a license, the museum needs to send an email granting that permission, as explained at COM:OTRS. They must specify a particular license. The simplest thing would probably be if they say you will be uploading multiple images on their behalf, and that the license applies to all of your uploads of their copyrighted material. Then on the image page, indicate in the permissions section that the underlying object is public domain, and for a license tag give {{CC-BY}} or {{CC-BY-SA}} (whichever the museum prefers). Also, put {{OTRS pending}} so this doesn't get prematurely deleted as the OTRS process (which is backlogged) works through.
  • All of this would be much simpler if you'd taken the photos yourself. Since the underlying object is in the public domain, you would be the sole copyright holder; you could grant any appropriate license you wanted. The legalities around uploading other people's photographs that have not already been free-licensed are tricky, hence the COM:OTRS process. - Jmabel ! talk 19:31, 17 December 2016 (UTC)
  • By the way, "Registered copyright" is almost completely irrelevant under the Berne Convention, which the Netherlands signed in 1912, and any color photo is certainly more recent than that.   • More or less. We're not at all interested in obtaining things fraudulently. Again, if the museum is near you and you can take your own pictures of objects that are now in the public domain, that would be simplest. Also, for anything in the public domain and strictly 2-dimensional (e.g. a painting without the frame, photographed straight-on) in most countries (I have no expertise on the Netherlands) the photograph has no copyright of its own, because there is considered to be no creativity involved, simply reproduction of a public domain work. - Jmabel ! talk 17:41, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

using an old photogtaph of an ancestor to edit the wiki page

Hello. I have got a problem uploading my photo to wikimedia commons. I have noticed there is an entry on wikipedia about my family ancestor. (https://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduard_Krziwanek) There is his portrait but I think I have a better photograph of this politician. My photo is taken in an atelier Winter in 1860. I wanted to upload a cutout from this photo to exchange the painting displayed but the website said the photo can not be accepted for some reason. Can you help me with this? @Standorhoutmees: you triggered an automated filter designed to stop new users from uploading images taken from web. In this case it was a false positive. The filter simply checks if the image size is below certain threshold. If you have a higher resolution image it should be accepted. MKFI (talk) 07:30, 19 December 2016 (UTC)

Cannot find author, consent from the owner, OK to upload?

Hi, I wanted to upload an old photo of a person that was taken over 60 years ago. It is impossible to find the photographer now, but the person in the photo, who is now 86 years old, consented to share the photo to public. Can I go ahead upload the picture?   • Probably not OK. You don't say what country, and there are some where it would be OK. If you can answer that, we can proceed to the relevant questions for that country.
  • Copyright does not always vest with the photographer. I believe that under UK law, if a photographer was commissioned to take a photograph, then the copyright belonged to the person who commissioned the phot, not the photographer themself. (The law deemed that when the photographer was paid, he sold the copyright unless the agreement said otherwise). Thus, if the person in the picture is British and they commissioned the photo then they own the copyright. Also, copyright can be passed on to another person, for example, by inheritance. Couple of weeks ago before i got an account i added to the 1995 page on brths section the singer Dua Lipa With that i added too the picture of the singer. It was exactly the same picture that was on her main page here. Only a lot smaller i did the same thing someone else had done on that 1995 page. Just with another person(Dua Lipa) If it was cause that picture was not free to uuse.With respect none of those are here unless the person in question has been dead long or i made it myself. The first won't happen for most of the pics here i bet.So either you have a busy job removing alot of unauthorised pics or you allow them unless the person on a picture or the maker protests. I bet the picture that is on her personal page now is made by someone else then the one who posted it.I was tempted to put it again as i did before on the other page. But as i am tired of the nonsense i did not.I asked one editor and he had no idea why but i do not know who removed it and i would love to know why so that i can either be justified to remove evey pic on the site put down without authorization. Or can put a new one up and not have the same hassle. If it was cause the person did not like the pic. That is a personal thing i cannot help that. I took the same picture i saw on the main page cause if it can be there and can be on other pages too as long as they make sense of course. So either let people go ahead or rebuild alot of the wikip[edia site.

Help needed

Could someone please help me avoid having my photos deleted? Both my uploads are my own work. To my knowledge, i have filled in the summary information properly... yet a user is asking for more information (source) which is already listed. I have requested what more information the user is looking for, but i have yet to get a response. I feel as though I'm am being bullied. Hi, Indeed, the user who jumped at your throat is inappropriately agressive. He or she is also misusing the "no source" tag and making absurd assertions and demands. You are right not to let the user bully you like that. That said, any user may start a discussion and may question the validity of a file, if they can at least articulate some reasonable doubt. If not, they should assume good faith. So far, the comments of the user seem to have missed the "reasonable" aspect. Let the discussion run its normal course. Now, let me ask you a personal question. It's fine to contribute to Commons anonymously, so feel entirely free to answer or not. But the user name you chose for your account leads me to believe that you're not trying to remain anonymous and it seems to imply that you may be related to the person pictured on the photos. If you don't mind, would you tell if and how you are related? That may help a little to evaluate the validity of the photos. Multiple images in upload history

I just encountered File:First Congregational Church- Manistee.jpg, where the author overwrote an image with a different image of the same church. Is it possible to re-upload and use the old file, or does this essentially count as an author-requested deletion? It seems like a fine enough image. kennethaw88talk 05:57, 20 December 2016 (UTC)

Good question. The first thing to do is probably to ask the user what his/her actual intention was. Of course, overwriting is not the way to request the deletion of an image. However, when an uploader correctly requests the deletion of an image a few days after the upload, the deletion is almost always done. In the present case, the overwriting was done one day after the upload. If the intention of the user was to leave both images on Commons, then one of the files should be reuploaded with a different name, or an admin can separate the files. If the intention of the user was to delete the image and if he/she believed, although mistakenly, that overwriting was the way to do it, then maybe the image can be deleted. But the fact that the user never made an actual deletion request probably means that he wants to leave both files. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:18, 20 December 2016 (UTC)

{{VN}} template not producing Wikidata link

I added the {{VN}} template to Category:Percina nigrofasciata and the result includes a notice reading "Note: no wikidata item is associated with this category". However, there is an associated Wikidata item. Why is it not showing up? I tried using the useWikidata=1 functionality to no avail. By contrast, {{VN}} in Category:Anas wyvilliana does produce a wikidata link. Why does one work and the other not? --Rrburke (talk) 13:02, 20 December 2016 (UTC)

It seems to work that way only if the page or category where the template is used has a site link to Wikidata. If a sitelink can't be created, it can be given a parameter like useWikidata=Qxxx. --ghouston (talk) 03:52, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

Changing a Photo

Good morning, I and the Creative Services Manager for MSA - The Safety Company, referenced on Wikipedia under our old name Mine Safety Appliances. I wanted to update the logo that is used on the Mine Safety page to the current version that was changed in 2004 to add the tagline "The Safety Company". However, the system will not allow me to do so and the reason given seems to indicate that because of the file type or contents, I do not have permission to do so. Someone placed the old logo, so it seems there is precedence. You probably mean File:Mine_safety.jpg. As you account is not autoconfirmed you can not re-upload files uploaded by other accounts. You can wait for four days to become autoconfirmed. However I advised you not to re-upload the file but to upload the new logo under a different name and then change it in the article. Ruslik (talk) 19:42, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

Attracting professional photographers

I've just uploaded File:Lee Mack and Tom Parry on Radio 4's 'Don't Make Me Laugh'.jpg. Check the credited Flickr user's photostream, it's simply impressive. There's a wide array of well-shot photographs of top British comedians and actors. I think the photographer is from BBC. All the work is in non-free CC licenses--itself a rare find. I got this one by sending a permission request to change it to BY-SA since we didn't have any photos of Lee Mack.

Now, I was wondering how to encourage possible future contributions besides my usual thanks.

  • A plain link to Commons:First steps but someone like this joining here is really less likely--they do have a job (hehe).
  • A more realistic expectation would be getting them to release their work and we doing the dirty work (form filing and uploading).
  • Plus there's a good chance I'll find another page without an image and will have to request the same person again--me doing that seems impolite. It would be better if I say now will they mind me bugging them in the future.

So keeping all this in mind, are there any helpful links to give them? or simply any advice as to what to say? I've been referring and updating the guide on requesting free content REQUESTFLICKR and especially the section Wikipedia:Requesting_free_content#Recognition_for_Flickr_users. Song sheet "Mary from the Dairy" issued in 1950

The song sheet comprised four pages. Cover sheet shows title and photo of Max Miller who sang the song and the composers (words by Sam Kern, Max Miller & James Walsh; music by Sam Kern). Pages 2 and 3 comprise the musical annotation and words. Inside it stated "Copyright 1950 by The Peter Maurice Music Co. Ltd., Maurice Building, Denmark St. London W.C.2"

Uploading image with explicit permission from copyright owner

I want to upload the current logo of the Ayn Rand Institute. I emailed the Institute, and they emailed me back granting me explicit permission to upload the logo onto Wikipedia along with contact information for their legal expert and the official logo PNG. I'm unsure how to go forward because I'm not sure how to describe this situation in the copyright section when I try to upload the image onto Wikimedia commons. Please help. Thank you. The problem is that the permission you requested and got is not the kind of permission needed to host copyrighted content here. (See these instructions for how to do that properly.) But if we're talking about this logo, then it is not actually eligible for copyright protection, so no permission is needed, and {{PD-textlogo}} applies. That's assuming they released that photo under the CC license too. The process was a bit strange, in that the NZ Government was assigned the copyright to the flags, so that they became crown copyright, released them under a CC license, and then assigned the copyright of the failing designs (which was all of them?) back to the original authors. The statement on [3] actually says "After the referendums, copyright in unsuccessful flag designs will be assigned back to the designers as appropriate. Once copyright has been assigned back to the designers, any use of those flag designs will require permission from the designers or any other owner of copyright in those flag designs (unless the use is otherwise permitted under the Copyright Act 1994)." They never were under a CC license. The footer on the website was: "Unless indicated otherwise, all content on Govt.nz is licensed for re-use under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 New Zealand Licence" (emplasis added). The more complete general statement on the "copyright" page also included the caveat: "Unless indicated below, or on specific items or collections of content [...]". It also specified: "Exceptions - Copyright in photographs on Govt.nz is not owned, or licensed to you, by the Crown. Unless otherwise stated in relation to specific photographs, you cannot copy, distribute or adapt any photograph without the agreement of the copyright owner." When it comes to the flag designs, it is clearly "indicated otherwise". The "resource" page with the flag designs specified: "These designs are for personal use only and are not available for commercial purposes." Another specific statement spelled out that "... In accordance with the Flag Design Terms and Conditions, the copyright in the flag designs is owned by the Crown during the referendum process, and following that process if a new flag is chosen. After the first and second referendums, copyright in any unsuccessful flag designs will be assigned back to the designers as appropriate. Right, it's a government site, so I should have expected a statement in one place to be contradicted elsewhere. That's bad news for File:Lockwood Silver Fern Flag.png, but I don't think it would apply to the flag designs in general. There was nothing to revoke. The designs were never under the CC license. The CC license of the government website applies only "unless indicated otherwise". On that website, the statement with the designs, "These designs are for personal use only and are not available for commercial purposes", clearly "indicates otherwise". (Even in the hypothesis where the government had tried to offer the designs under CC (which it did not do), it could not have, because someone can't offer more rights that they have.) Being in compliance

Apologies in advance if this information is available but have been all over the site and through the links and still not sure how to proceed so that I use these images correctly. at least in one regard - no surprise, am new to the program.

I recall finding elsewhere that I need to provide a link to the image page, indicate any changes, and make the any changed images available at no charge on Wikimedia Commons, all good.

Here's where I run into a big question: The first image I would like to use is the Black Labrador Retriever, and am logged in as I view the page, where I find this requirement: "You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor."

language question

I understand the the Commons is multilingual. But I am wondering if it is best to redirect the Black Sea to Чорне море - Чёрное море - Karadeniz - Marea Neagră? Kalbbes (talk) 19:22, 22 December 2016 (UTC)

Does it have to be redirected at all? Most files in it are translated and the Russian title is confusing (to me at least). All the "See also" cats use "Black Sea" wording. Many may not read the gallery because of the title (I nearly didn't, thinking it was unrelated to the Black Sea) but the "See also"s are useful. Kalbbes (talk) 20:39, 22 December 2016 (UTC)
The redirections (there are from a few languages, e.g. Black Sea, Mer Noire, Schwarzes Meer, ...) may make it easier for some users to find the gallery page (they may also reduce the risk of someone creating by mistake duplicate galleries under those names). Reverse what redirection, why? The unilingual redirections work fine to lead to the multilingual title. The multilingual title is not likely to be of use as a redirection to one unilingual title. Germany, France or the United States do not have a connection with this location that surpasses the connection with the neighbouring countries. Do image files that make factual claims need a reliable source?

Hi,

I've found some image files here, such as maps and diagrams, that have nothing to indicate that they are factually correct or cite any sources. Some of these have found their way to Wikipedia (though that's another story), but I was wondering if the uploading policy of Commons means that factual accuracy or sourcing is optional. I'm mostly talking about images like:

  • A territory map of a historic country or empire whose borders are not common knowledge
  • An image claiming to be the flag of something with no other information
  • A photograph identifying something such as a building or animal (e.g a regular plantation home identified as Graceland)

Is it just up to the various Wikimedia projects to determine sourcing and accuracy? --TangoFett (talk) 11:46, 23 December 2016 (UTC)

Another opinion please

I uploaded this file - " Pollard trade mark 1907.jpg " from a 1907 (now defunct newspaper Truth available on the National Library of Australia's), to illustrate an article on Pollard's Lilliputian Opera Company. I believe its actually a cartoon, not a trade mark but that's sort of beside the point. Any advice on whether this can be used would be good.Nickm57 (talk) 10:28, 24 December 2016 (UTC)

Speedy Deletion of Images

Hi,

Three images I had uploaded successfully and linked to the pages of three personalities got nominated for speedy deletion under section F7. I have got these files from the personalities themselves, specifically to upload on Wikipedia, have added photographer credit etc. Could someone guide me on what I'm doing wrong and why they got deleted?

You're going to have to ask on English Wikipedia, since that's where you uploaded en:File:Onir Profile.jpg, en:File:Raj Purohit Director.jpg and en:File:Ansh Bagri Profile Picture.jpg, which are what I'm guessing this is about. uploading images with no licensing rights of a government organisation

hi,

i don't have any licensing rights, but i want to upload a logo of an official organisation of Pakistan which is Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. im not sure how to upload the image as to avoid its deletion in the future?

is there any legal way of uploading the logo of representing an official orgnisation for public knowledge purpose in a legal way in order to avoid deletion in future?

Not here on Commons unless the copyright holder is willing to release it under a free license. If you intend to use it on a project that allows non-free fair use content, such as English Wikipedia, you may be able to upload it locally to that project. Using a different Username on Commons than Wikipedia

Is it permissible to create a separate Username on Wikimedia Commons than my pseudonym used on Wikipedia? The reason is that I have many photos (that I shot) that would be useful to the Commons community, and I would like to use my real name when uploading them. I would contribute them copyright/license free, but would like my actual name attributed as the photographer. We don't have a formal sockpuppet policy on Commons. It is okay for you to create one as long as you don't abuse it, for example by voting multiple times or "arguing" with yourself etc. Sebari – aka Srittau (talk) 16:29, 27 December 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for your answer, User:Srittau. That's what makes me uncomfortable, someone thinking I was sockpuppeting by having two accounts. I would never think of arguing with myself or voting multiple times on things, as that would be abusive to the community. I will probably not create a separate Username, and just forego uploading photos. I want to keep life simple. Netherzone: I don't see any policy issues, but you might find it awkward from a practical point of view to have to log out and log in when switching projects, since logging in on one Wikimedia project logs you into other projects as well. Cross-wiki notifications also won't work with multiple accounts, so you may want to set up e-mail notifications if you plan on using one account less frequently.
Seeing as your reason for wanting to do this is attribution, keep in mind that you can always put your real name into the author field of the {{information}} template, in the author field of the {{self}} template and/or the attribution field of most licensing templates for licenses that require attribution. I do this for my own uploads, with a link to my user page. Of course, some reusers will still credit whichever username is listed in the "File history" section, even if that's a bot and there's a clearly listed actual author. HotCat exporting

Wikia I have formerly used importing the HotCat Gadget to Wikia with no problems but it seems to not be working anymore. A quick search on DuckDuckGo and here showed nothing. Location template questions

Re: File:Seattle - panoramio (3).jpg, I see we are not supposed to use the {{Location}} template more than once on a page; does anyone have something better to substitute here? (Incorrect photographer-asserted location + corrected location.)

Well, the file has been deleted, but I had a chance to look at it before that happened. You should be able to resolve issues like this by marking the incorrect location as secondary, as documented in Template:Location/doc#Template parameters, but personally, I'd just remove it. I see it was deleted with "Uploader requested deletion of a recently uploaded unused file". family photo

I am completely new to wikimedia and, after this is resolved do not have any ambitions to contribute more postings. I have created a biographical entry for the Polish wikipedia about my father, who died some 50 years ago. It went through several reviews and now seems accepted by whoever has the final say in such matters. For now it is the text only, but I would like to add his photo as well. It would be one of the photos of no commercial value from our private family archive and, as they were taken some 60 years ago I even don't know who their authors are. So, can I post one of them? What do I do about the licence/copyright? If you don't know who the author is, it will obviously be impossible for you to obtain the author's permission to publish their work, as required by law (not to mention publishing their work under a free license, as required by Commons' policy). LX (talk, contribs) 13:39, 30 December 2016 (UTC)
I think you should take this question to Commons:Village pump/Copyright. I suspect that in many cases older Polish photos that have never been published either fall into the public domain or would be eligible for copyright by whoever now publishes them, but I have no expertise in the matter. Copyright help regarding File:Endla1911.jpg

Does anyone know about copyright laws in Estonia? In Finland copyright of an ordinary photograph (not a piece-of-art) expires in 50 years. --Vesa Höijer (talk) 16:47, 31 December 2016 (UTC)

COM:CRT#Estonia has a link to the law where you can see for yourself. I don't see anything there about a shorter term for simple photographs.
