First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

--SieBot 17:47, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

File:Gruzja2009.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

MatmaBot[edit]

I've noticed there's a bizarre situation on Commons where Commons:Bots/Requests has items on it over a year old. Yours is the oldest. Are you still hoping someone will act on your request and give your bot permission after all this time? Wnt (talk) 00:01, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. odder (talk) 18:21, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Happy Holidays!
G'day, just a quick greeting wishing you and your family happy holidays and all the best for 2014. And of course, a big thank you for putting a leg up by doing what you do on Commons, and helping to make it the fantastic project that it is. Thanks for uploading File:Logo of Łódzka Regionalna Sieć Teleinformatyczna 2012.svg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Logo of Łódzka Regionalna Sieć Teleinformatyczna 2012.svg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Thanks for uploading File:Cross-wiki uploads to Commons, 2015-10-21 to 2015-12-09.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

No required license templates were detected at this file page. Please correct it, or if you have any questions please check my FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Yours sincerely, Jarekt (talk) 13:39, 10 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Upload wizard[edit]

Hi! I would like to thank you to make the fix for the wizard countdown as I reported at the Village Pump. Some years ago (2013) I proposed some possible future improvements, but since I am not very familiar with Phabricator and other places where these discussions take place, nobody has really cared about that, so... Can I just leave you a note and maybe you can post them for me? Or maybe just leave me your impressions or comment about.... Here we go:

  1. Alert: the best part of the Wizard uploader is that you can let it go and do something else. It would be useful to have an alert when the upoload is finished and you are supposed to do something to go on, like a sound, a change of the color of the screen, or a java pop-up.
  2. Copy undo: when you add descriptions and categories you usually copy them from the first files. You open the "Copy menu" and the "Copy title (with automatic numbering)" is already selected, always. If by chanche you already put specific titles on each image (I do, because I prefer to keep the information in the title rather than in the description, in order to save that in my private archive too) and you mistakenly forget to unselect it, there is no way to undo, to revert it. All the titles are gone, and as a result it will take less time to start over the uploads again, instead of manually correct all the filenames one by one. Undo option would really help a lot, in case, or just a way to always unselect that option in your preferences.
  3. Add bottons to top as well: after adding categories/descriptions, sometimes you have to scrool the list all to the end, sometimes you need not, so it would be useful to have the "continue" botton at the top of it too (now it is at the bottom only). Also, when you finish uploading it takes you all the way up: if you do not need to revise all the images, it will be useful to have the "Upload more files" botton at the top too.

Number #1 would be really useful, but number #2 is a must-do... it screwed up so many uploads to me! N. #3 I'd especially appreciate a botton to start uploading again after a session is finished on the top. I am in the top 10 uploader of Commons, so I spend a LOT of time with the wizard. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!! --Sailko (talk) 12:38, 20 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Sailko: These sound quite sensible, I filed #1 as phab:T122073 and #3 as phab:T122074 with some brief comments. #2 is already filed as phab:T116513. I'll try to look into this one soon, no promises about the other ones.
Looking at the other ideas from the old thread: "Knowing how many files I am uploading" has been implemented at some point (there's a counter next to the progress bar), "Work it during the progress" is tracked as phab:T39462, and "Hot-cat facilities" is phab:T42076. Matma Rex (talk) 20:43, 21 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, something was already improved since. I have no words enough to say THANKS :) --Sailko (talk) 09:52, 22 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Rotatebot source[edit]

Hey, source code is there but I think it's just wrong to fix it as it will just give everyone the feeling we don't need this implemented "natively" in MediaWiki, but it really should have implemented it. -- Rillke(q?) 22:47, 15 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Rillke: Thank you for the pointer. I might have fixed it: [4] (no guarantees). I'm not currently working on implementing the functionality in MediaWiki, sorry. Matma Rex (talk) 00:36, 16 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Is deleted. Thanks for spotting that. Is /* Any JavaScript here will be loaded for all users on every page load. */ correct? I think it isn't loaded for all users, nor should it be... -- Rillke(q?) 20:27, 20 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Rillke: No, it's just getting confused by subpages in the MediaWiki: namespace. It's treating it like a translation of "MediaWiki:Common.js" to the "IEFixes.js" language. You can ignore that (and not make any more confusing subpages ;) ). Matma Rex (talk) 20:30, 20 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry[edit]

Duplicate file names[edit]

Hi I am not sure this https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T135394 has been fixed, but I did not get an error when I uploaded File:US leading causes of death-2014.png so I am wondering if the error only affects svgs. Delphi234 (talk) 08:34, 25 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Delphi234: It's unfortunately not fixed yet, the patch is awaiting code review. The bug affects files of all types, but only when the file name (without extension) is a prefix of the file name of some already existing file. There are no other files whose names being with "US leading causes of death-2014". Matma Rex (talk) 12:22, 25 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I guess it is just if I make the name shorter? I was thinking it would be tripped up by File:US leading causes of death-2013.png 13:36, 25 May 2016 (UTC)

On another note it looks like my suggestion to just left justify the exif data was implemented. Delphi234 (talk) 06:33, 28 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Delphi234: Yeah. I usually try to update the original report at Village pump, but it's archived very aggressively and often the thread is already in the archive. Someone would probably complain if I edited archive pages, and someone would probably also complain if I tried to restore the archived thread, and either way finding the thread in the archive would take effort better spent doing something else. I just hope that anyone interested watches the Phabricator task :) Matma Rex (talk) 12:52, 28 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed it because the exif block looked different on all the files. Delphi234 (talk) 18:23, 28 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Uploadwizard maps[edit]

Hello Matma Rex, I read that the Kartographer extension was activated on Commons this night. What does that mean for the map link for UpladWizard we spoke of (Commons:Village pump/Archive/2016/04#UploadWizard should link to coordinates)? --Slomox (talk) 07:59, 17 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Slomox: It unblocks the UploadWizard work, since we'll now be able to use the Kartographer maps in it on Commons. There is still some work to be done on our side – I actually wrote a patch for phab:T133905 a month ago, but it doesn't work reliably (sometimes the popup will open, but no map will be visible) and I haven't had the time to debug it yet (I was focusing on UploadWizard reliability rather than new features, and recently on the cross-wiki uploads mess). Broken UploadWizard interface[edit]

Hi, do you know the UploadWizard in Italian has a broken interface? I couldn't see any recent change in messages or templates, only [5]. --Nemo 13:23, 29 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Nemo bis: No, I didn't, thanks for letting me know. It's possible my change caused it by loading those additional messages; I think there's a </div> missing somewhere in one of them. I've been looking at it for an hour now and I still didn't find it, eh. I wish there weren't so many nested templates there. Matma Rex (talk) 15:26, 29 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Again facing badparams problem[edit]

Hi,
Thanks for your previous efforts to face this technical problem where I couldn't upload a file for "badparams" problem. After your supportive effort, I am facing same problem with another file(I uploaded previous one). I waited to upload the file till this Wednesday and even now couldn't upload this file. This is the file I wanted to upload. Please can you help me doing it. --Pavan santhosh.s (talk) 05:09, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Pavan santhosh.s: This looks like an entirely distinct problem, I'm not sure yet what's causing it. It seems specific to this PDF file. I'm sorry you keep running into issues, thank you for reporting them. I filed phab:T143993 about this and I will investigate it. Matma Rex (talk) 12:40, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Pavan santhosh.s: I think I figured out what's going wrong and fixed it. We don't do non-emergency code deployments on Fridays and weekends, so I scheduled a fix to be deployed on Monday (13:00–14:00 UTC). You should be able to upload the PDF afterwards. Matma Rex (talk) 17:11, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Matma Rex: Thank you. I will try uploading it on next Tuesday or Wednesday --Pavan santhosh.s (talk) 03:49, 27 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Pavan santhosh.s: The issue is resolved now. By the way, while testing it, I learned that a copy of this file already exists on Commons: File:Tallapaka pada sahityam.pdf. Matma Rex (talk) 14:00, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Matma Rex: Thank you. :) --Pavan santhosh.s (talk) 15:05, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I am dubious if this is actually your own work if you decide to ambigiously name MediaWiki developers as the author instead. There is no doubt of MediaWiki's license as depicted to be correct, but if this is your own work, then you should also add an appropriate license for it (GPLv2+) as a derivative work of MediaWiki.

If this is not your own work, please name the actual name of the screenshot author or "unknown". 80.221.159.67 23:16, 4 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I am the "screenshot author"… I could go through all the MediaWiki screenshots I uploaded (there's more than just this one) and change the source to something else in them all, but I'm not convinced it would be necessary or useful. I re-read Commons:Screenshots and it does not provide clear advice on what the correct values for "Source" and "Author" are. I'm pretty sure the way I described these uploads is fine (but I'd be happy to be proved wrong). Matma Rex (talk) 20:40, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Bad thumbnail[edit]

Hi Matma Rex,

Would you do me a favor and look at File:Child Soldiers International.jpg, to figure out why it is wrong in the infobox at w:en:Child Soldiers International? None of the black words appear in the thumbnail. WhatamIdoing (talk) 17:48, 24 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@WhatamIdoing: It's a problem with thumbnailing CMYK JPG files, see phab:T38346 / phab:T141739. Matma Rex (talk) 15:43, 25 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Another statistics question[edit]

Hi Bartosz,

it seems, that you are skilled with queries. Do you think there is any way to review User:Multichill/Categorization stats? I'm waiting for this since quite a long time.--Kopiersperre (talk) 10:44, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Kopiersperre: If you just want an up-to-date number of entries in Category:Media needing categories and Category:Media needing category review with subcategories, you can install w:Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser on your computer and use it to make a list of pages in those categories (recursively). Note that this might take an hour or two. (This wouldn't be practical with a single SQL query, since MySQL doesn't really let you work with recursive structures.) Historical data might be impossible to get, though, since categories are only stored for current versions of pages in the database – you could extract it from dumps if you really wanted to, but this would be quite an effort. Matma Rex (talk) 13:00, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, how can I set up a bot, which records this values again? Maybe @Multichill: would give me the sourcecode.--Kopiersperre (talk) 13:10, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I still have the source, but it's old style pywikibot so it needs a bit of tweaking. The queries are on the talk page so if you just want to run them now, you can throw them into quarry. If people actually care about this bot, I can restore it's functionality so it continues to update that page. Multichill (talk) 13:49, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Also languages "Aromanian", "Samogitian" and "Belarusian (Tarashkievica)" are repeated twice, "Crimean Tatar" and "Crimean Turkish" is the same language, it needs to be fixed. Thank you in advance for your help. --TohaomgTohaomg (talk) 19:43, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Tohaomg: Thanks for the translations, I'll get them added – I'd like another Ukrainian-speaker to check them for typos, since I don't speak the language myself. I see you registered on Phabricator, can we continue on phab:T172219? :)
The duplicates are interesting, this seems to be caused by duplicate language codes for some languages (MediaWiki added support for them before the codes were standardized and now we have two). This affects Aromanian (rup and roa-rup) and Samogitian (sgs and bat-smg). I filed this as phab:T172220.
At first I expected Belarusian (Tarashkievica) to be a similar problem (it has two codes, be-tarask and be-x-old), but I don't see the duplicate – when viewing Special:UploadWizard in English, there are only single entries for "Belarusian" and "Belarusian (Taraškievica orthography)". Same with Crimean Tatar/Turkish – there are only single entries for "Crimean Turkish" and "Crimean Turkish (Cyrillic script)". Perhaps these two are mistakes in the existing Ukrainian translation? Matma Rex (talk) 20:53, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Oh nevermind, I see the Belarusian duplicate – it's in English as "беларуская (тарашкевіца)‎". I filed another task about the missing English translations (phab:T172222). Matma Rex (talk) 21:01, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Matma Rex, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.

Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:

  1. You edited MediaWiki:Gadget-HotCat.js. Thank you for caring about Wikimedia Commons's javascript pages.
  2. Though, that change appears to introduce 19 new jshint issues — the page's status is now having warnings.
  3. To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in javascript writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine.

Błędne polskie tłumaczenie etykiety przycisku na stronie Special:AbuseLog[edit]

Jeszcze wczoraj było „Szukaj”, a teraz, po zmianie wyglądu, jest „Zapisz”. Zgłosiłem to do Ciebie, ponieważ z pewnością jesteś w stanie poprawić to znacznie szybciej niż ja. --jdx Re: 00:46, 18 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open![edit]

2022 Picture of the Year: Saint John Church of Sohrol in Iran.

Read this message in your language

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
