Can't choose the type of license

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Map_of_Cabul_1839-1842.jpg#mw-jump-to-license

This file can be deleted because of absence of source and license information. I have already added source (check, is it in appropriate form), but I can't choose license. Please, help — Preceding unsigned comment added by John Francis Templeson (talk • contribs) 11:16, 01 November 2016 (UTC)

John Francis Templeson (talk) 11:17, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

  • If the map dates from the 2012 publication of the book (William Dalrymple. The Return of a King: The Battle for Afghanistan) then it is copyrighted and we can't host it. You give the impossible date of 4 October 2016 (after the publication of the book) and you also say you are the author of it (which, if true, still would require that you go through the COM:OTRS process to release rights on previously published material). If it's an old map in the public domain, then you should give the actual date and author, and should indicate an appropriate public domain tag. As the uploader, it is your responsibility to sort out the basis on which the image is either in the public domain or free-licensed. - Jmabel ! talk 15:53, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

This map is from the mentioned above book. Is book considered free-licensed if it's in a free access? If yes, what tag I must write in the license bar?

John Francis Templeson (talk) 19:32, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

The answer is no. Ruslik (talk) 20:11, 1 November 2016 (UTC)
As a rule of thumb "stuff you run across on the Internet" or "stuff you run across in a book" (unless it's a really old book, like a century or so, and even then it can be tricky for a non-U.S. book) is almost certainly copyrighted and almost certainly not free-licensed. I strongly recommend that if you don't know your way around this, and you want to upload materials you didn't create yourself, then read public domain in the English-language Wikipedia and [Commons:Project scope#Must be freely licensed or public domain]]. - Jmabel ! talk 23:36, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

It's a file from en.wp that has been copied to Commons today. As you correctly linked above, the en.wp file is "File:EKingGill.jpg" and the Commons file is "File:E king hill 12thman.jpg". There's one file on en.wp and one file on Commons. There's no duplicate on Commons. -- Asclepias (talk) 03:41, 2 November 2016 (UTC)

Problems with Exif

I moved attribution from this image to Exif and on my system the email address (previously watermarked on the pic) appears as this: thejourney1 972@yahoo,com,br (with a space and commas instead of dots). I tried to remove the colon before but it didnt work. I tried an online tool to edit Exif with no results. How can I do?--Carnby (talk) 09:26, 30 October 2016 (UTC)

@Carnby: MediaWiki is incorrectly formatting the field as if it was a number. I submitted a patch to correct this: https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/318912 it should be deployed on Wednesday. You don't need to do anything, just check the page again on Wednesday evening to verify that it displays correctly then :) Thanks for reporting the problem. @Matma Rex: Thanks but there's still a problem: a comma between 1 and 972: thejourney1,972@yahoo.com.br (the dots are ok).--Carnby (talk) 13:52, 2 November 2016 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Pierre Joubert.jpg

I have problems on the copyright status to be assigned to this file. This is not my work, but a photo taken by another person. The photo is present in this album https://www.facebook.com/pascal.poumailloux/media_set?set=a.1749159377300.103171.1488319360&type=3. Before uploading the image on Commons, I contacted the author of the picture, asking his permission to use the image on Wikipedia. The author gave me permission. However I can not find any tags that correspond to this situation. What can I do?

--Yaniv 01 (talk) 13:05, 24 October 2016 (UTC)

There is no tag for this situation because it is not allowed. Firstly, you can't have recently contacted the author of the picture, Robert Manson, because he died in 2001. Secondly, Commons requires freely usable pictures and a permission restricted to use a picture on Wikipedia is not a free license. Thirdly, licensing must be evidenced by a verifiable declaration by the copyright owner. You can try to obtain a valid free license by finding the identity of the person who inherited the copyright of Robert Mason, asking them if they agree to release this image under a free license and, if they accept, asking them to send to Wikimedia an email confirming their declaration of free license by the procedure detailed in the page Commons:OTRS. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:21, 24 October 2016 (UTC)

Thanks Asclepias. I've found out an error occurred during my upload. I uploaded Manson picture instead of the one which I asked for. Now I've uploaded the correct file. The picture basicaly a picture taken by Pascal René Poumailloux, the person to which I asked permission. Also the photo of a photo creates problems, or not? --Yaniv 01 (talk) 15:22, 27 October 2016 (UTC)

@Yaniv 01: That Pascal Poumailloux owns a 'copy' of the image, and reproduced it to publish online, does not mean that he owns the copyright... the copyright probably belongs to the person who originally took the image, or his heirs. Given the 'signature' on the bottom right corner of the larger version, this was most taken by this person, who died in 2001, and would be copyrighted for well over 50 more years. Reventtalk 16:34, 3 November 2016 (UTC)
It's a cropped version of the same photo. Same answer as above. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:09, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

Artwork

Hello, I took a picture of a public displayed mural at my local library. This mural was made a couple decades ago. Is it suitable for upload to Wikimedia Commons? I know that some editors take pictures of artwork and put them on the commons, so I wanted to know if the date of creation disqualified the work. Thanks, Icebob99 (talk) 23:45, 2 November 2016 (UTC)

  • Typically the answer will be no, not eligible, but it depends on what country and what year the mural dates from. Since you don't say either of these, no one will be able to give you a solid answer. - Jmabel ! talk 15:18, 3 November 2016 (UTC)
Hi @Jmabel: , the mural was made in 2007 and is in the United States. Icebob99 (talk) 15:39, 3 November 2016 (UTC)
@Icebob99: It's not okay without permission from the artist.... see Commons:Freedom of panorama#United States, under 'Artworks and sculptures'. Sorry. Reventtalk 16:54, 3 November 2016 (UTC)
@Revent: Hey, that's why I asked, good to know. Thanks, Icebob99 (talk) 17:59, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

Speedy this?

The following image was uploaded by a confessed sockpuppet of a user on the English Wikipedia who was blocked for a number of reasons (copyvio, using Wikipedia for cyberbullying are the two biggest ones). I didn't know if this should be deleted or not. File:You're An Education!.png

Part of me leans towards recommending a delete because he's the type that sees continued use of his edits and articles as an endorsement that he should be allowed to continue editing. Tokyogirl79 (talk) 05:44, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

It's a presumably PD title of a notable work, so it shouldn't be deleted.--Prosfilaes (talk) 07:24, 3 November 2016 (UTC)
Deleted, description showed (c) Warner Bros., grabbed from a blog. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 07:37, 3 November 2016 (UTC)
The file is in use on en.Wikipedia. The two accounts are not blocked on Commons. And, as noted by Prosfilaes, the file looks like a public domain title. (Apparently the 1947 title card for the reissue of the 1938 cartoon.) It would seem odd to delete from Commons an in-scope file uploaded by a non-blocked user on the sole rationale that the user is blocked on en.Wikipedia where the file is use. Unless there is another issue, for a deletion request on Commons, at least a first step would normally be to get a consensus on en.wikipedia about the removal of the file there. Even then, the rationale for deletion from Commons would still seem weak and not a case for speedy deletion, but you could start a normal deletion request and see what happens with it. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:13, 3 November 2016 (UTC)
I'm dubious that this is PD, actually, unless you are claiming that it is itself below the TOO. The 1938 cartoon was registered, and renewed. The 1947 version doesn't seem to have itself been registered (as it contained no new material, other than the title sequence, that is not surprising) but many 'other' of the Blue Ribbon versions were being registered, and they would have included the same 'new' title sequence.
Actually, having glanced through the various copies of the CCE from the era, I suspect that Category:Merrie Melodies contains a number of works claimed as 'not renewed' that actually were. Reventtalk 19:05, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

This image is of the front cover of the Book. The book has no copyrights restrictions what so ever and does not carry any copyrights symbol. It was printed in Damascus Syria in 1966. It is out of print, and its auther has passed away in 1996.

I believe that it qualifies for free publishing and does not infringe any copyrights.

--Hisham Ben Ghalbon (talk) 01:25, 4 November 2016 (UTC)

I've marked the front cover as PD-Text, but the book itself will be under copyright for a long time; the Berne Convention (which Syria is a signer of) protects it for 50 years from the death of the author, or 2046.--Prosfilaes (talk) 02:18, 4 November 2016 (UTC)

Material on archive.org

Hi, I'm looking to upload a screenshot of a page on the Wayback Machine, and I'm wondering if being on the Wayback Machine means that it's okay to redistribute. I don't want to violate any copyright laws. Thanks, Icebob99 (talk) 14:31, 5 November 2016 (UTC)

Hi, No it's not okay. The thing to consider is the copyright status of the work itself. The fact that a work is reproduced somewhere doesn't remove its copyright. The Wayback machine is not the Whitewashing machine ;). -- Asclepias (talk) 14:46, 5 November 2016 (UTC)

Deleting a unwanted file

I would like to know how do you delete off a file that is no longer wanted it needed specifically a file that one's own self had uploaded? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Homey104 (talk • contribs) 23:53, 06 November 2016 (UTC)

  • Typically, you can't. You may not "want" the file anymore, but if you uploaded it here you've already granted an irrevocable license. Assuming everything was in order, about the only exception I can think of is if you uploaded a personal file for use on your user page. But if it's anything of broader interest, you can't undo the license you granted; you have no more right to delete it than anyone else. - Jmabel ! talk 02:24, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
  • On the other hand if (as I suspect looking at some of your uploads) it was a copyright violation without valid license in the first place, you can point that out as readily as anyone else, and it will be deleted. - Jmabel ! talk

--AliBoshehri (talk) 23:50, 8 November 2016 (UTC)

  1. Why would it not be copyrighted? It doesn't look very old.
  2. The reason it was tagged with {{Remove this line and insert a license instead}} is that when you uploaded you did not indicate any license nor did you indicate a public domain tag. The name of the template pretty much says what to do if you have either an appropriate license or have a basis to claim it as public domain. - Jmabel ! talk 00:59, 9 November 2016 (UTC)

Newbie: what to do with the original .svg file?

Hello, in the french wiki, the page https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Livres_du_Disque-monde shows a picture "Plan de lecture des Annales du Disque-Monde", which points to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Diagramme_disque_monde.png and whose original source in SVG format is http://orizuka.free.fr/blog/public/Divers/guide_DM-source.svg

I downloaded this SVG file to my computer, edited it with Inkscape to complete it with the translations of the last books. I then uploaded a new version of the png file. Ok.

But how can I share the updated version of the SVG file (in case someone would like to change something)?

Is wikipedia able to display a svg file directly? Jack-cnv (talk) 10:47, 10 November 2016 (UTC)

Hi Jack-cnv, I reverted your upload. You should upload your file separately. Regards, Yann (talk) 10:52, 10 November 2016 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) @Jack-cnv: You can use our Upload Wizard for uploading the SVG to Commons. After uploading, you can replace the PNG version with the SVG one. Thanks, Poké95 10:54, 10 November 2016 (UTC)
Clarification: "After uploading, you can replace the PNG version with the SVG one" means you can replace the usage at fr:Livres du Disque-monde, not replace something on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 16:57, 10 November 2016 (UTC)

There were many Air Raids. Then 2 of us were taken to a small air port in the middle of the night (pitch black). there was a small plane there with the engine running painted black and we were flown to a unknown location in France I was physicly thrown out of the plane by my protector 19 years old! way too intelligent for my age and volunterd into this at 18. Learning HOW to use Wikipedia

I have used Wikipedia on a few occasions, and have to admit that I am still at a complete loss as to how to navigate this web site. Can you do something to make life a little easier to use it. Talk, Preferences, Beta, Watchlist,Uploads,Contribution? All mean nothing to me except contribution.Do try to understand that you have members of various age groups, and late starters in computers and web sites like Wikipedia. I have to search now to find what I do next for my message to reach you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kennyboy45 (talk • contribs) 14:07, 11 November 2016 (UTC)

  • @Kennyboy45: For starters: this isn't Wikipedia, this is Wikimedia Commons. If there is anything specific you are trying to do on Wikimedia Commons, ask here, and either someone will tell you how or point you to a page that will tell you how. For the English-language Wikipedia, the analogous help page is en:Wikipedia:Help desk.
  • Short answer: as at all a casual user, you shouldn't care about Beta, probably don't need to mess with Preferences. "Talk" on the top bar reaches your own talk page (mainly a place where people may direct messages to you). Uploads shows images you have uploaded; Contributions shows all edits you have made. Those two are each in backward chronological order. Watchlist is a little trickier: you will notice slightly lower down, in the top nav for the specific page you are on, a tab called "watch". Once you click that for a particular page, it is added to your "watchlist". Every time you click "Watchlist" it will show you the latest edit to each such page you are "watching", in backward chronological order. Hope that helps at least a little. - Jmabel ! talk 16:10, 11 November 2016 (UTC)

Something apparently in Turkish

Setenay hukuk felsefesi derlemeler. Temenniler serisi madde madde sıralanmışken, koşullar yine o maddeleri yok sayabilir — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eksıoglu (talk • contribs) 21:41, 14 October 2016 (UTC)

It's Turkish, all right. I don't read Turkish but I can recognize it. So can Google Translate (I used Detect Language just in case):
Setenay is a compilation of legal philosophy. A dry understanding of law that only reduces to the norm rule dimension has never been sufficient in terms of social acceptance. At the same time, the rules were sought to serve justice. At this point, the philosophy of law has made it possible for the rules that have philosophy to help the law to gain meaning and value. As a term, there is also a law of law, despite its positive connotations, with a rare form of justice, which is rarely given.
I have no idea how to make sense of that; maybe someone else can. --Thnidu (talk) 15:55, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

iSPOT CC-BY-SA

Hi, I am trying to find some photographs of South African plants and found many good images on iSPOT. One of the photographers there Tony Robela has posted a statement that all his work is under CC-BY-SA. Is it ok for me to copy and upload his work? What tags should I put on it, e.g. he does not mention any version number. How do I best credit him? Sorry for my ignorance, I usually only upload my own work, or derivatives from things I find here. Jcwf (talk) 06:47, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

  • It should be OK.
  • The page you link is login-only, so I can't read it; you might do well to save its content somewhere & email that to the OTRS people.
  • I'm not sure on the version thing: does someone have thoughts on this? It should be safe to do 1.0, but I'd sure rather see the latest (4.0).
  • For now, besides anything with a license, in the "Permission" section of the Information template link to that page you mention above. If later they issue you an OTRS authorization number after reading the page, that should also go there.
  • Presumably, credit him as "Tony Robela" unless he credits himself otherwise. Put that both in the "Author" field of the information template and the "Author" field of the CC license. - Jmabel ! talk 18:52, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

But I want to upload a smaller version as well, and I can't find any guidance on doing that. Do I have to go through the whole process again? --Thnidu (talk) 15:33, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

Please don't upload duplicates. There's usually no reason to do that. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:01, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

I just now got advice on https://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=wikimedia-commons, of how to do it in the en:wiki article, but there's no indication of that here on Commons, not that I could find anyway. Please add such info to UploadWizard: how to add a different-sized version of an image, either on Commons or in a wiki. --Thnidu (talk) 15:59, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

  • We don't want a smaller-sized image. The info is "don't do this." If you upload a smaller-sized image, it will be deleted as a smaller-sized duplicate. - Jmabel ! talk 18:53, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

Where you can get images from

Can you get images from Getty Images and put them onto Wikimedia Commons if you get permission from the author who took that image??? Bryson483 (talk) 22:12, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

It probably depends what image, what author and what contract they have. You should ask the author in question, who is certainly the person best placed to know the answer to this question. Remember that the permission you need is a free licence. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:53, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

File from old postcard refused by Commons

My file was created from a Canadian postcard circa 1940 representing the sanatorium of lake Edward and sold by the sanatorium which was a public building owned by Québec government. So it is in public domain. It is more than 50 years old for Canada and more than 70 for USA. Why is it refused? I have an other postcard circa 1926 of the same building; will it be OK? --Cajetan392 (talk) 01:18, 14 November 2016 (UTC)Cajetan392--Cajetan392 (talk) 01:18, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

  • Assuming this is about File:Sanatorium du lac Édouard vers 1940 (période de 1926 à 1943).jpg, you may be right. Or not (remember, copyright expiration dates are usually relative to the copyright-holder's death, not the date of publication). However, on the file page in question you did not even make any claim of a grounds for public domain: there was no PD license tag at all. So it's not surprising that a bot came along and tagged it on the basis that there was no indicated permission, and that it was then deleted.
  • Probably you are most likely to get the copyright status (which I think is quite unclear) sorted out at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. If you like, you can take the matter directly to Commons:Undeletion requests, but I really recommend sorting out the copyright issue first, so you have some ammo to argue with for undeletion. Remember to give the file name like I did in the preceding paragraph: it won't particularly help non-admins, but it will let admins look at the history of what happened. - Jmabel ! talk 05:54, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

How do I prove a photo is free and not a copyright violation?

A portrait photo of William Tunberg was deleted because it was uploaded as Fair Use. The owners, Bill & Camille Tunberg, didn't originally want the photo (or any of their photos) to be free, but this is the only way the photo could be uploaded to Tunberg's Wikipedia page. So now the owners agree it is free, and it was uploaded as free. What has to be done to prove this? I received a message stating that it's a possible copyright violation and slated for deletion. This is very frustrating. I'd like to upload other photos as well. What's the proper procedure? If I can't upload as Fair Use, and I can't upload as free, then how do I get photos on the page? Again, the owners give their permission for anyone to use the photos uploaded to Wikipedia. Do you need an affidavit from them? Thanks for your help.Cstwct (talk) 03:03, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

Please have a look at Commons:OTRS. They have to follow the decribded procedure. --JuTa 03:50, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

I don't think the terms are compatible with Commons. • If it's pretty obviously not a privacy violation, all we really need is the photographer's consent, since that would be the copyright holder. See COM:OTRS for how the photographer can send that; remember that they should make sure to be specific what license they are granting. - Jmabel ! talk 00:05, 16 November 2016 (UTC)

Corrupted thumbnail

Hi. I just noticed that File:Bangkok Benjakiti Park 2.jpg (as well as others by the same author) generates a corrupted thumbnail. Is this due to the progressive JPEG bug? Is there a bot that's supposed to convert such images, and if so, is it still running? And is there a way to flag files to get the bot's attention? --Paul_012 (talk) 19:36, 12 November 2016 (UTC)

No, it's due to the CMYK JPEG bug (phab:T141739). This should be fixed soon (check out the Phabricator task – we already identified the solution and a few possible fixes, now we just need to find some time to prepare and deploy one of them). Matma Rex (talk) 10:34, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

Flickr: Public domain pics from the Somme 100 commemoration

Hi, trying to upload public domain pics from Flickr for the following album.[1]. Uploaded the 294 pics using Flickr2commons and all looked okay. Few days later I find they have been deleted (wouldn't have minded a heads up before someone did this, by the way). Figured out the problem was the public domain license needed further explanation before pics could stay on Commons. So tried reuploading but only 2 pics have re-uploaded. One of which is here so I added the PD author license explanation to these two pics BUT other 292 won't upload because they are getting a Transfer failed [1] : Warning/duplicate-archive error. So question is how can I upload these public domain pics to Commons without falling foul of the Warning/duplicate-archive error and how can I bulk amend the license on Commons once they are on so they have the PD author license once they are up? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stinglehammer (talk • contribs)

@Stinglehammer: I guess this is a Flickr2Commons bug. Uploading an exact copy of a file that was previously deleted produces this warning (you can see it on Special:Upload or in UploadWizard too), but it can be overridden if the tool supports this. I guess you'll have to try using some different tool, I'm pretty sure there's a bunch of them (UploadWizard also has uploads from Flickr, but they're only enabled if you're an administrator or license reviewer). Matma Rex (talk) 15:12, 17 November 2016 (UTC)
At this point, Commons:Undeletion requests would seem simpler than uploading again. Then use VFC or some other tool to fix the license. - Jmabel ! talk 16:27, 17 November 2016 (UTC)

Unknown author

What if I am not sure about the author of an image? Is the source the weblink to the image? KarinSpader (talk) 21:09, 17 November 2016 (UTC)

Ideally, an image description page would have both author and source information. A source is always required; a link to where the image was found will do (see COM:EI). If the author is unknown, you can add {{author|unknown}} to the author field. clpo13(talk) 22:31, 17 November 2016 (UTC)
If you're not sure about the author, then you should upload the image to Commons only if you are sure that it is free independently of the identity of the author for a reason you can specify. The source is the link to the image in its context, not only to the image. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:23, 18 November 2016 (UTC)

I emailed the folks that run the European Tree of the Year competition. The woman said I could use them as long as I credit the author. In this case it was just labeled as the town itself, some other pictures have a singular person who took the picture. I didn't know what to put, I had the permission but I didn't know the option

--Stackler (talk) 22:55, 17 November 2016 (UTC)

  • Unfortunately, generic "permission to use" is not good enough for our requirements. We need a specific license (e.g. CC-BY, Free Art License) or a release into the public domain (typically via CC-0) and we need that to come from the rights-holder. If the rights-holder is not the uploader, that can come either by a published statement elsewhere online (e.g. indicated license on Flickr) or by the process lined out at COM:OTRS. I know this can be a pain. Unfortunately, a firm decision was made many years ago that "I'm sure this would be all right with them" isn't good enough. - Jmabel ! talk 00:02, 18 November 2016 (UTC)

Album Art & Band Pictures: Wikimedia-Safe Upload, or Copywritten Images?

I was wondering if it would be acceptable to upload pictures related to a band (Car_Bomb) so I could add them to their Wikipedia page? It's not my band, and I'm just trying to clean up their Wikipedia page by adding some pictures, but if I don't own the content, (like album covers or pictures of the band), am I still allowed to upload this to Wikimedia? (And as a follow-up; If I can't upload this to Wikimedia, how can I still upload them to the Wikipedia page?) Raptor XIV (talk)

  • There are two possible approaches:
    1. You can approach the copyright holders about releasing these images under a free license. See COM:OTRS for how they can release this without having to do the uploads themselves. However, this is unlikely in this case: very few bands will free-license their album covers.
    2. Assuming you are talking about the English-language Wikipedia, unlike Commons they allow non-free images under certain circumstances. Two good starting points are en:Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria and (as a substitute for the {{Information}} template, en:Template:Non-free use rationale.
  • BTW, no such word as "copywritten". It's from "right" not "write". The word is "copyrighted". - Jmabel ! talk 16:28, 18 November 2016 (UTC)

Using pictures

Can i use a picture i find from the interent — Preceding unsigned comment added by As!28 (talk • contribs)

  • That's pretty vague. If you are asking if you can upload it to Commons, generally no. Everything on Commons must be either public domain or free-licensed. If you don't understand what that means, please stick to uploading only pictures you took yourself. Most content on the Internet does not meet those requirements. - Jmabel ! talk 07:32, 19 November 2016 (UTC)

Help with uploading this image

I would like to upload this image. I contacted the Arkansas Governor's Office about uploading this image, and they said I could if I credit it to the Arkansas Governor's Office. However, there is no license option for that that I know of. Any help? --1990'sguy (talk) 00:16, 19 November 2016 (UTC)

  • Since you are just linking the image itself, rather than its context, it's impossible to verify that there is permission on the linked page. In other words, that's not a useful source link. You need to link the page where the image appears.
  • If the permission on the page is as you say, it would just be {{attribution|Arkansas Governor's Office}}. However, if it doesn't spell out on the page that you can do that, you'll need them to send an email as described at COM:OTRS indicating that they granted you permission. However, it does need to spell out that derivative works are acceptable, and that commercial use is acceptable.
  • I know that's a bit of a high bar; it's often not very convenient to do this for a single third-party photo. - Jmabel ! talk 00:32, 19 November 2016 (UTC)
The source page has an "all rights reserved" copyright notice, and permission for one person to upload an image somewhere is nowhere near the kind of free license required to host the content here on Commons. LX (talk, contribs) 11:29, 19 November 2016 (UTC)

Hej Daga!
Who invented the mandatory field for exact publishing dates?

Somebody designing the upload wizard evidently thought it would a very smart idea to make a mandatory field for the exact date of creation or first publication of the image uploaded. Considering that a relevant part of the images in Commons are in public domain because they were created centuries ago, and it is usually quite impossible to know the exact date of creation of a 18th-century work of art, anyone uploading any such material is just forced to produce bogus metadata, littering the system. Thus, should anybody happen to know the proud inventor of that bloody field, please pass along my suggestion that they might want to meditate about their deeds. Thanks. --Oop (talk) 00:19, 17 November 2016 (UTC)

@Oop: Hi, I am the proud inventor of that bloody field. The toggle to the left of the date field allows you to disable the "calendar" mode, and input anything you desire into it. Matma Rex (talk) 15:09, 17 November 2016 (UTC)
...but if possible, Oop, don't just input anything you desire into it, but instead use the {{Other date}} template (or {{Complex date}}) to enable automatic translation into the reader's preferred language, e.g. {{complex date|date1=1700|adj1=late|precision1=century}} → late 18th century

There are generally two ways to do that. Either you put a gallery your page like this:
Alternatively, you can create a user category into which you can put all your files and just link to that from your user page. Take a look on my user page to see how it's done. Please note though, that Commons is not a general image uploading service, photos uploaded here must be "educational useful" (in a broad sense). For details see COM:SCOPE. --Sebari – aka Srittau (talk) 17:32, 20 November 2016 (UTC)
You don't need to create the ability. The ability already exists. Visitors can click on the link «User uploads» in the left column of your Commons user page. Or if you want to make it more prominent, you can add another copy of that link somewhere in your page and you can add a text of presentation if you want. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:37, 20 November 2016 (UTC)
  • You can copy and paste on your user page this:

Creator template and categories

The page Category:Asahel Curtis says, "Add pages to this category by adding {{Creator:Asahel Curtis}} to the page" but, in fact, adding that does not seem to affect the categories. For example, File:King Street Station and Union Station, Seattle, Washington (4860575703).jpg uses {{Creator:Asahel Curtis}}, but I had to also explicitly add [[Category:Asahel Curtis]] to get it into that category. Are the instructions simply wrong? Is this a caching issue? Is something broken in some other way? Repeat photos with misleading file name and wrong author

Relating to File:Eunectes deschauenseei.jpg. First uploaded almost 2 years ago, but uploader provided wrong identification (it's Eunectes notaeus, not E. deschauenseei) and the source+author had taken the photo (it wasn't theirs). However, the true source+author have copyright requirements that are compatible with wiki and photo was uploaded more than 10 years ago with real ID+source+author: File:Anaconda jaune 34.JPG (source page has changed since 2004, but can still be seen via wayback: [3]).
How does wiki.commons deal with this? Rename the newly uploaded file with its current misleading file name (File:Eunectes deschauenseei.jpg), or delete it entirely because it is a cropped, smaller copy of a photo already on commons? 80.62.116.207 16:49, 23 November 2016 (UTC)

The new file should be marked for deletion using {{Dupe}} template. Ruslik (talk) 17:24, 23 November 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. I've tagged the file with the duplicate template. 80.62.116.207 17:38, 23 November 2016 (UTC)

Derivative map

I want to take this image: File:BlankMap-World6-png.png (released as public domain), color it and upload it to commons as 3.0 or PD (whatever is easier). What license should I use? Thanks Jim1138 (talk) 05:36, 23 November 2016 (UTC)

Since it's a public domain file, you can use any license for your derivative work. CC BY-SA 4.0 is usually recommended (this is the default option in UploadWizard). Matma Rex (talk) 09:22, 23 November 2016 (UTC)
To enable the most reuse, I would recommend reupload as either PD or CC-0. --Sebari – aka Srittau (talk) 15:12, 23 November 2016 (UTC)
Thank you. CC-0 was easily selected, so I used CC-0. Thank again Jim1138 (talk) 03:03, 25 November 2016 (UTC)

Yes, you may create a user category for your uploads. Please put place it in Category:User categories by adding {{User category|アアアア}} to your category.
If someone who speaks Japanese could translate this response, it would be great.

Solomon Pekar

Dear Sir/Madam,

thank you for sharing with me the objections of EugeneZelenko regarding the photo of Solomon Pekar. Probably, there is some confusion regarding it. I did not submit this photo as a new page in Wikipedia. As I stated in my submission note, the photo is aimed to the page “Solomon Isaakovich Pekar” that exists in Wikipedia already for years. However, that page doesn’t include Pekar’s photo, and my submission is Pekar’s photo for it.

I guess the objections of EugeneZelenko are not regarding already existing Solomon Pekar page but regarding the photo that I supplied a few days ago with the only aim: to include it into the Pekar’s page. The photo that I provided is in my personal possession for decades. I cannot provide any specific date when the photo has been taken, but it seems to me that it is not needed for this purpose. I provided the date to which it probably be attributed. I wished to put the photo at the Wikipedia Pekar’s page long ago but could not figure out how to do this technically. This is my first attempt to add photos to Wikipedia pages, hence, if I did this not in the best way, please excuse me.

I previously donated this photo to the American Physical Society visual archive where it can be found as:

https://photos.aip.org/history-programs/niels-bohr-library/photos/pekar-solomon-a1

This page says explicitly that (i) this is the photo of Pekar and (ii) that I am the priginal owner of it.

In conclusion, please put this photo at the Solomon Pekar’s Wikipedia page. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TooOldMan (talk • contribs) 21:57, 26 November 2016 (UTC)

Digital Sky Survey copyright

I'm uncertain about the status of images from the astronomical Digital Sky Survey (DSS), or more usually now from Digital Sky Survey 2 (DSS2). These are under copyright, see here. I believe that there has been communication explicitly authorising the non-commercial use of these images on Wikipedia. However, I think there are an increasing number being documented incorrectly, for example File:Shurnarkabti-sha-shutu (Zeta Tauri).png. I don't know whether the need tagging for deletion or just documenting differently. Lithopsian (talk) 16:56, 26 November 2016 (UTC)

Commons can't accept anything with a non-commercial use clause. See also Category:Sloan Digital Sky Survey. --ghouston (talk) 00:30, 27 November 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll get categorising and tagging. Lithopsian (talk) 20:14, 27 November 2016 (UTC)
If you are tagging for deletion, no need to categorize. - Jmabel ! talk 21:30, 27 November 2016 (UTC)

Unable to upload images to Wikimedia due to several images being deleted for not being in compliance with fair use

Hi there,

I am a super new user to Wikipedia and have been diligently working on creating my first article. Everything was going okay until I ran into trouble regarding a couple of photos that I uploaded to Wikimedia. Turns out one was not allowed as it was a screenshot from a TV however the second photo is mine. Because it has been used (by my granting permission) by my business website on our blog, it was cited as a copyright infringement (it's not - I own the photo and the website!). Additionally, I currently have one photo that is being reviewed by Permissions by Wikimedia Commons and am awaiting approval (I own the photo - it's my old modeling composite card).

I just now attempted to upload a new headshot that is from my smartphone and it was rejected. Apparently I am now blocked from uploading photos because of potential abuse(!) however only one photo was actually in violation of Wikimedia standards, all others are mine.

How can I have this block lifted from my account so I can finish writing this article and submit it for approval?

Thanks a million. Baxter91 (talk) 04:41, 27 November 2016 (UTC)

  • Headshot from your phone was probably blocked from a "Wizard" upload for being very low-res. I think it should be possible to upload via Special:Upload, though I'm not sure. Can anyone tell this user something more definitive on that?
  • On the other front, someone may have already explained this to you but if you have a photo that you first posted to the web elsewhere, probably the easiest way to sort out the rights issue is if you can post an indication of the licensing at the same site where you posted the photo. Then you can link to that either in the deletion discussion (if that is still ongoing) or at Commons:Undeletion requests if not. If for some reason it is not practical to indicate the licensing on that site, see Commons:OTRS for another way to do this (using email) but it is usually backlogged on our end by 1-2 months, so it usually takes a while to get the image undeleted here. - Jmabel ! talk 08:41, 27 November 2016 (UTC)

  • You're not blocked from uploading on Commons. You can see that in your logs. What may be blocked is the tool for interwiki uploading from Wikipedia to Commons because it was abused. That has to do with the tool, not with you. You should be able to upload directly on Commons.
  • Discounting the deleted screenshot, you currently have three files on Commons: 1. card, 2. book signing, 3. awareness month. See your logs. Is the file you say was blocked another file or one of those?
  • For the photo published on your website, IMO the method suggested above by Jmabel is the best to resolve the matter quickly, i.e. indicating the free license for this photo directly there on your website with the photo. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:48, 27 November 2016 (UTC)

updating an image for which prior permission was given

For the Wikipedia page AoB PLANTS, a letter of authorization is on file granting permission by the journal's owner to use the journal's cover image on the Wikipedia page. The image has been modified and we want to post the revised image. Must we obtain another letter of authorization???? — Preceding unsigned comment added by GailRice (talk • contribs) 21:47, 27 November 2016 (UTC)

  • @GailRice: Assuming you mean en:File:AoB_Plants_2015_cover.gif, that is a non-free image on the English-language Wikipedia, and is in no way connected to Commons. If (as I'm guessing) you wanted to replace that with the 2016 image, you could do that the same way; the 2015 image page should get deleted when it is no longer in use. Nothing about non-free use like that requires a letter of authorization, but, again, that is strictly on the English-language Wikipedia: the image would not be acceptable on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 00:33, 28 November 2016 (UTC)

Derivative images

For an image derived from an existing Commons file (for example, a crop), should the source be given as the existing file, or the source of the existing file? Vzeebjtf (talk) 06:59, 28 November 2016 (UTC)

You should also specify the source of the existing file and can add the existing file as well. Although I would do the latter using the other_versions field. --Sebari – aka Srittau (talk) 07:03, 28 November 2016 (UTC)

Actual copyright status

I'm currently editing the italian page of Bombing of Yawata (June 1944) and I was looking for images. In this reference (http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/AAF/V/AAF-V-1.html) I found a picture that could be useful for the page, however I don't know if I can use it or not. The images is surely older than 70 years, but it's located in a copyrighted book (last renovation is 1983). Yaniv 01 (talk) 12:54, 28 November 2016 (UTC)

  • It's going to depend on what country's laws apply. Republication in a book doesn't matter: anything about publication date would be date of first publication. But for most countries, the relevant date isn't the date of the photo, it's the date the author dies. You might do better to take this question to Commons:Village pump/Copyright, where there is usually more expertise. - Jmabel ! talk 16:12, 28 November 2016 (UTC)
User:Yaniv 01: The first image on that page is already on Commons (in higher quality than the version on that page): File:B-29 target cities in Japan.png. It's hard to imagine that the other file wouldn't also be {{PD-USGov-Military-Air Force}}. LX (talk, contribs) 17:20, 28 November 2016 (UTC)

Can I upload this picture to Wikimedia Commons?

https://eo.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dosiero:Robert-RolletdelIsle.jpg — Preceding unsigned comment added by Momijiro (talk • contribs) 16:49, 28 November 2016 (UTC)

The license box tells us, the image would be in public domain, so yes you could move it to Commons. But in fact this depends on life dates of original author. The name mentioned there is Jean-Robert, but there is only an intrawiki link to an Esperanto article without these dates. Do you know these dates? Is there an article for the author in another Wikipedia like the French? BTW into this Esperanto article eo:Karikaturaj bildkartoj de desegnisto Jean-Robert are more images embedded. I did not check them, but in case they are also available only for Esperanto Wikipedia, they perhaps could be moved to Commons, as well. — Speravir – 17:10, 28 November 2016 (UTC)
Oh, the first embeded image is already on Commons, and this could serve as template for image and license information, but needs itself categorization, see File:S-ino Alice Farges en karikaturo.jpg. — Speravir – 17:15, 28 November 2016 (UTC)
Thank you very much. --Momijiro (talk) 17:59, 28 November 2016 (UTC)

Where to discuss categorization of Category:Nikon AI AF Nikkor lenses

Hi! Where is a good place to discuss the categorization of Category:Nikon AI AF Nikkor lenses. IMHO the discussion page of the category reaches only a small audience. For me the naming AI AF Nikkor lensen is odd. "Ai" is a term for old Nikon lenses. I guess the name was chosen to indicate that these lenses have an aperture ring. But it is not an official notion of Nikon, s. for example AF DC Nikkor 135mm. --Tuxyso (talk) 18:15, 28 November 2016 (UTC)

I already got personal confirmation from the maker of this video, Jeroen van Kan, to use this video. He posted this video (https://vimeo.com/62503607) with no copyright restrictions on Vimeo. I just want to know I did everything oke. I would not like Wikepedia to remove the video since I am really trying to follow the guidelines to post a 'clean' article.

If there is any doubt about this video, do let me know in time (before the possible expiration). Jeroen van Kan, is namely willing to supply all the documentary necessary.

Kind regards --MarqyF (talk) 22:31, 28 November 2016 (UTC)

  • The File page was marked for possible deletion because you didn't indicate any license terms at all.
  • I don't see any indication on that Vimeo page that there are no copyright restrictions. If he would add that to that Vimeo page, that would suffice: it would be clearest if he says explicitly that he is releasing it into the public domain under CC-0. - Jmabel ! talk 01:24, 29 November 2016 (UTC)

Uploading a photo I have been given

I wish to upload a photo of the subject of the article I am preparing for inclusion in Wikipaedia. It is a photograph of a painting which the owner of the painting has sent to me and is happy for me to include in Common.

Could you please tell me what procedure I need to follow: any forms that need to be completed etc.Pogga D (talk) 22:45, 30 November 2016 (UTC)

  • It doesn't matter who owns the physical painting. What matters is who owns the copyright to the painting. We'd need permission from the artist or the heir to the artist's intellectual property rights. That permission, if obtainable, must either grant a specific free license or release the work into the public domain. The process is explained at COM:OTRS.
  • You don't mention what language's Wikipedia, but I'm guessing English. If so, there is some chance that even if the image is not eligible for inclusion on Commons, you might be able to upload it directly to the English-language Wikipedia under their provision for using non-free images. - Jmabel ! talk 23:32, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
