Removing Image in WikiData

We have an old company logo that is still being referenced on the web in WikiData. I've already uploaded a new one, but how can I remove the old one? — Preceding unsigned comment added by WikiUser1980 (talk • contribs) 13:59, 01 September 2016 (UTC)

File is just availibale on Commons, not on language-specific Wikipedia?

Hi, I want to embed this image (IPhone 7 Logo.svg) in the iPhone 7 Wikipedia article. Problem is: it is not displayed, it seems like the image is non-existent - but it is! The Commons page is availibale, but not the image pages on de.wikipedia.org en.wikipedia.org etc. Could you help me with this? --TheMostAmazingTechnik (talk) 13:21, 8 September 2016 (UTC)

There's the same problem on other Wikipedias also. The upload of the file is recent. Wait a little. It is very unusual, but maybe the servers are exceptionally busy or something. If it still doesn't show later, more investigation could be required. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:03, 8 September 2016 (UTC)
I reuploaded the image and it's working now. I'll delete this image because it's still not working... --TheMostAmazingTechnik (talk) 18:36, 8 September 2016 (UTC)

File format changes automatically while moving Audio Files

Hi, I was moving some audio files to their appropriate names but the file format has automatically changed from .ogg to .oga. Now, even if I try to change it to .ogg, it does not happen and say that this file name already exists. Take "File:Pa-ਆਟਾ.oga" for example. Thanks a lot for your support. --Satdeep Gill (talk) 04:36, 2 September 2016 (UTC)

It's been like that for years. If you try to move .JPG it automatically becomes .jpg too. Ogg automatically becomes Oga. I've never heard of anything that changes this. INeverCry 06:26, 2 September 2016 (UTC)
If file extensions (not format) changes while they are moved, then they should have changed on the time of uploading. This change of file extensions create some problems, like group of files not in harmony (which is caused by one or more files having different file extensions), forcing a filemover to move a lot of files in the group to be in harmony instead of moving just few. I will be filing a task in Phabricator about this. Poké95 12:31, 2 September 2016 (UTC)
Task created: phab:T144593 Poké95 13:07, 2 September 2016 (UTC)
User:Pokéfan95 Thanks a lot for creating this task. This complicates the things a lot. All the .ogg audio files are required to be changed to .oga on Wikimedia Commons and then we have to fix the template on wiktionaries which use a template that accesses PAGENAME.ogg from Wikimedia Commons.--Satdeep Gill (talk) 13:28, 2 September 2016 (UTC)

Using a Wikipedia photo for a cover image

I found a photo here: https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Terracotta_Aeneas_MAN_Naples_110338.jpg that I would like to use as the front cover image for my book (self -published). I'm afraid I can't tell for sure if the Creative Commons license permits that type of use or not, so some help on that front would be appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 50.53.180.200 (talk) 08:21, 04 September 2016 (UTC)

It certainly permits, but you must attribute the image as specified in Commons:Credit_line for the CC-BY-SA license. Ruslik (talk) 17:39, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

Deletion of Pictures "Ukranenland"

Hello Help Desk Team,

a couple of days ago I tried to push a deletion of the following pictures:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Ukranenland

I'm a member of the museum in Germany where this Commons/Wikipedia article is about. (Ukranenland Historische Werkstätten e.V.) The chief of the museum asked me for help in this Wikipedia/Commons issue, because he is not into computer and internet.

ALL pictures that are shown in the link are very old. Some of them were photographed after a flood that destroyed the museum. So the pics don't show the actual status of the musem AT ALL.

Some of the pics are even very hurting to the image of the museum and because of that,it could mean an economical damage to our institution.

I marked every pic there for deletion, but one of your admins blocked me after that. He thought I was a spam-bot. That's not the case.

So once again....please help to delete this horrible pictures!

To replace it and to show the real image of the museum, we got many professional shots that can be uploaded after the deletion!

Thanks in advance!

Henning Boldt Ukranenland Historische Werkstätten e.V. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eygenart (talk • contribs) 18:15, 04 September 2016 (UTC)

There's no reason to assume that any pictures should show the current status of the museum. Photographs show the past by their nature.
I don't think it likely that these files will be deleted; I think the best thing you could do is contextualize them and provide new images showing the current state of the museum. (You'll probably need to send a message to OTRS to clarify that you represent the museum and that the museum has the rights to freely license these new professional pictures.)--Prosfilaes (talk) 22:34, 4 September 2016 (UTC)
Documentation of history is well within the scope of Commons. You should, instead, create subcategories that show the pre-flood museum, and the effects of the flood, and then keep only 'current' images in the top category. If you don't know how, you can ask for help with a list of the images that belong to each group. Reventtalk 00:48, 5 September 2016 (UTC)

Template for tag when uploading an edited version of a picture already in the Commons?

Hello. I've never found the Commons site very easy to navigate and I can't find where the templates for the different copyright statuses are. I am about to upload an edited version of a picture that is already in the public domain and in the Commons (I'm removing a large frame around the image), before using it in a Wikipedia article. Could someone please point me towards the tag/template etc. to use to link it back to the original file and mark it as public domain too? Many thanks, DionysosProteus (talk) 16:21, 5 September 2016 (UTC)

You could use teh same format that I used at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Half_Bananas_for_Sale_at_Market_-_Trivandrum_-_Kerala_-_India.jpg. Martinvl (talk) 16:41, 5 September 2016 (UTC)

My category was destroyed by someone ignorant

I made up a category called "Sackabfuhr" (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Sackabfuhr?uselang=de) here that deals ONLY with a special form of waste collection ONLY in the city and state of hamburg, Germany (cf. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sackabfuhr_(Hamburg) ). That's the reason why I called it "Sackabfuhr" with the German term. Some ignorant user destroyed the category and split some files to a general waste bag category, other files have gone to the nirvana ... I'm really, really, really angry. Why wasn't I contacted first? If someone does not understand the German description, why don't they ask me first? THIS BULK ACTION MUST BE REVERTED ASAP! How do I do that? GeoTrinity (talk) 01:15, 1 September 2016 (UTC)

My article on the Sackabfuhr is likely to appear on the German Wikipedia start page soon, and all visitors clicking on the Commonscat link will now find everything but not my 44 files showing Sackabfuhr in Hamburg! I'm sorry but this action was pure vandalism by the user ŠJů. Could someone with powers please restore my category soon? Thanks. GeoTrinity (talk) 01:25, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
Could you name it "Waste bag collection in Hamburg"? --ghouston (talk) 01:40, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
Nothing was destroyed and nobody should be titled "ignorant" here. I cleaned some unsystematically named categories and insufficiently categorized files and categories. As can be seen in the history, the category Sackabfuhr was never categorized under "Hamburg" before my edits (i.e. the German description didn't correspond to the categorization nor to the category name). Even the files were not categorized by location anyway. I hope, Category:Waste bag collection in Hamburg is more convenient for the Commons categorization system. --ŠJů (talk) 02:10, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
@ GeoTrinity: Btw., when you want to link a category, use simply a colon before the word "Category". :Category:Hamburg displays as Category:Hamburg. And when you want link any wikipedia article from Commons, you can use the same way with the language prefix: :de:Sackabfuhr (Hamburg) displays as de:Sackabfuhr (Hamburg). Do not forget the initial colon! Cheers! --ŠJů (talk) 02:20, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
I invested a lot of time to write the article in the German wikipedia project and to create the corresponding category. Of course you are ignorant since you simply did not understand that "Sackabfuhr" is not the general collection of waste bags but the official way of collecting trash in specific red or pink bags for those 13,000 households that don't have other waste containers. It must not be confused with other, general waste bag collections. Therefore, your category "waste bag collection in Hamburg" is simply wrong since Sackabfuhr has nothing at all to do with other, free, or paid forms of waste bag collections. You dissolved the differentiation though. And whenever a category is useful for something specific, the terminus technicus has to be used, cf. the existing category "gelber sack", even if this is in a language other than German. What you did, is NOT an improvement but you destroyed a working category for something very specific that was set up correctly by me, with a lot of effort, by the way. I will now look for a way to revert your crap on my own. If you don't fully understand what this category is about, you better leave your hands off it. What you did was a mistake. GeoTrinity (talk) 19:17, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
And I invested a bit of my time to correct your errors in categozation and naming categories and embody your contributions to Commons categorization system. Co-operation is a ground of wiki work. --ŠJů (talk) 20:49, 1 September 2016 (UTC)

GeoTrinity asked me for help and review of the current situation. Here my 2 cents: As far as I see ŠJů acted in good faith but in lack of knowledge of the specific waste handling of Hamburg. This can happen and should be no drama. After reading the article de:Sackabfuhr (Hamburg) I suggest to (re)create a specific Category:Sackabfuhr (Hamburg) to collect all images of pink waste bags of Hamburg. Does this sound as a solution? Raymond 15:28, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

I can add my cents again. Every city and every municipality have its own "specific waste handlings" and every city or municipality have specific colours, design and types of bags, containers etc. There is nothing mysterious nor incomprehensible on the Hamburg waste bag collection system. As far as I see GeoTrinity acted in good faith but obviously (as proved above) in lack of knowledge of the specific principles and handling of wiki categorization system at Commons. This can happen and should be no drama. The systematic category Category:Waste bag collection in Hamburg contains (in its corresponding subcategories) all images of "pink waste bags" and all images of waste bag containers from the previous Sackabfuhr category (which was specific primarily by the fact that it was improperly named and quite deficiently and inadequately categorized). There was no reason for panic or hysteria, no reason for rude assaults and insults – nothing was destroyed, nothing is disappeared. On the contrary, several serious categorization errors were corrected by me and the Hamburger collection system was made integrated to the categorization structure. The only problem was that GeoTrinity didn't orientate himself in the categorization structure and is not willing to accept that category names are generally in English (except for proper names or brands) and categories need to be integrated to the categorization system and conform with it.
Generally, "waste bag collection" categories contain mostly images from municipalities where is a system similar to the Hamburger one. As far as we will seen that there exist several distinct waste bag collection systems in Hamburg, we can try to distinguish them, however the word "Sackabfuhr" is not able to do so anyway because it is a literal translation of the common English description term "bag collection" only. Currently I see no need for such a distinguishing. City of Hamburg has the only waste bag collection system. As proved by a Google test, "Sackabfuhr" is not a specific "brand" name of the Hamburger system but a common term used also in other German-language cities which use or consider similar waste bag collection systems (whether for residual mixed waste or for sorted waste).
Raymond, what is your idea how should the (re)created category be integrated to the standard categorization system? According to your vision, Category:Sackabfuhr (Hamburg) should be a subcategory of Category:Waste bag collection in Hamburg and should have specific subcategories Category:Waste bags in Hamburg ("Sackabfuhr" system), Category:Waste bag containers in Hamburg ("Sackabfuhr" system), Category:Waste bag collection trucks in Hamburg ("Sackabfuhr" system) etc.? Or even your idea is to have the longed-for category as a parallel unsorted, unstructured and not interconnected mix? Wouldn't be better to create a gallery page for such a purpose? --ŠJů (talk) 19:04, 4 September 2016 (UTC)
ŠJů: Sorry I forget to mention that Category:Sackabfuhr (Hamburg) should be a subcategory of Category:Waste bag collection in Hamburg. Gallery page... hmm.. I am not a fan of it. Isn't really maintainable. Raymond 19:28, 4 September 2016 (UTC)
A gallery page is better maintainable than any needlessly complicated and unsystematic categorization, and above all, it would not disrupt the categorization system. What is your idea how the Category:Sackabfuhr (Hamburg) should be structured? Really we need such a paralel category tree, with a danger it will scatter images and rivall the standard subcategories? Why not to keep a standard and simple categorization and to learn to use it? --ŠJů (talk) 19:46, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

@Wikicology: Agreed that Wikimedia Commons is not a personal photo album, but given that there is an article about him in en-wiki that would not seem to be the issue here. - Jmabel ! talk 18:30, 2 September 2016 (UTC)
@Yurevich777: Assuming that we are talking about :, though, there are two problems. (1) only the copyright holder can license copyrights to a photo. Typically that would be the photographer. You as the subject can do so only if those rights have been signed over to you in writing. (2) Given that the picture has been previously published, we will need a release as described in COM:OTRS. - Jmabel ! talk 18:35, 2 September 2016 (UTC)
I actually misread their comment. My bad! Good to see that you have responded to this. Thank you. Warm regards. Wikicology (talk) 18:50, 2 September 2016 (UTC)

so what now?? the photographer has to spend his time to register here to upload the photo?? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yurevich777 (talk • contribs) 10:36, 03 September 2016 (UTC)

  • That would be one solution. The other two are (1) if the photographer has a web presence, he or she could post it there with a clear statement of what license applies, and you could reference that as the source or (2) the photographer could send an email as described in COM:OTRS. You could prepare that email yourself, to minimize their work. In the future, if you are having photography done professionally and want to release it under a CC license, this all becomes much simpler if first publication indicates that license. - Jmabel ! talk 15:40, 3 September 2016 (UTC)

Royal_College_of_Music_logo.jpg

The college has recently updated its logo and this is reflected on the College's Wikipedia page. I want to replace the existing on Wikimedia Commons with the new one. The German, Chinese and another still displace the old logo.

How do I replace this exiting logo because when our URL is typed into emails, it picks this wrong logo. This is not good for our branding. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Warriorg (talk • contribs) 08:44, 08 September 2016 (UTC)

On the technical aspect, you can edit the pages of the Wikipedias by replacing the filename of the old logo (File:Royal College of Music logo.jpg) with the filename of the new logo (File:Royal College of Music Logo.png), as it has been done in the English-language Wikipedia. There is no need to do anything to the file of the old logo on Commons.
(Although this was not part of your question, there may be some uncertainty regarding the licensing of both files. About the file:Royal College of Music logo.jpg, a person writing under the username Philip.t.day claims he made the image, although he attributes it to "Anon", and he claims that the image is under specific licenses. About the file:Royal College of Music Logo.png, a person writing under the pseudonym of "Royal College of Music" claims that he/she made the image and claims a copyright on it. Those authorship and licensing claims might have to be verified. The wording of your question ("our branding") seems to imply that you have some relation with the College. Maybe you can help clarify those authorship and licensing issues.)

Copyright help regarding File:Project Y Cowork.jpg

Hi, my company (Los Alamos Commerce and Development Corporation) owns the rights to this image and gives permission to have it on Wikipedia Commons. What else do I need to do to confirm copyright? I don't want the image to be removed from the page.

--Lace1285 (talk) 20:48, 9 September 2016 (UTC)

  • You provided no information about its copyright status when you uploaded. I'm not sure if it's even original enough to be copyrightable (though it would be eligible for trademark). If it's not, it would be PD-logo. If it is, then the owner of the copyright needs to decide on a specific license and should send email as described at COM:OTRS so that we can verify that this is coming from the real owner. - Jmabel ! talk 22:41, 9 September 2016 (UTC)

Where to add attribution template?

I just uploaded two pictures that I took myself of a historical marker in Baltimore, MD, U.S. (image 1, image 2). My understanding of the discussion about the copyright status of the marker as a potential 3D artwork at WikiProject Maryland#Image request in Baltimore was that the owner of the marker, the Maryland Historical Trust, informed another editor by email that "Our file photos are public record and we hold no copyright. We do request credit for use of photos from our files or our website, such as 'photo courtesy of the Maryland Historial Trust.' [sic] We also hold no copyright over other's images of the roadside historical markers." (my emphasis). Another editor replied that we should use the template Maryland Historical Trust, but does that only apply to images taken from Maryland Historical Trust or does it also apply to the pictures I took of their plaque? If it applies to my pictures, where do I put it? Permstrump (talk) 22:56, 9 September 2016 (UTC)

  • My take: "We hold no copyright" is simply not true: since 1978 in the U.S., copyright exists by default, cannot be waived, and (unless I'm very mistaken) rights can be transferred only in writing. Theoretically, licenses can be oral, but because of the mess around oral contracts, Commons requires at least an email from the rights holder, as described at COM:OTRS. The closest they can come to waiving copyright is to license under CC-0, and if someone can get them to send an email to that effect as described at COM:OTRS, great. Hi, I want to create a page for my band but don't know how to change the wiki page name from my username to my band's name! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Broderick at TEN (talk • contribs) 01:21, 10 September 2016 (UTC)

  • This question doesn't make a lot of sense. Let's start here: are you talking about a page on Commons, or on Wikipedia? Still, in any case, this is likely to be unacceptable both as a conflict of interest and project scope (unless your band has a pretty serious level of notability). Also, in any case, creating a page (or a Commons category) for a band has nothing to do with changing a username. - Jmabel ! talk 17:08, 10 September 2016 (UTC)

Problem uploading photos

I can't upload photos to commons using "upload file" or the upload wizard. I can upload with Vicunna uploader. I have a similar problem uploading to Facebook. Facebook says to update Adobe Flash, but I've done that and this Windows 10 doesn't need it anyway (I read). I tried another Windows 10 computer and it does not have the same problem. But I need to get the problem fixed on my main computer - any ideas? Bubba73 (talk) 21:15, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

Basically in Firefox the tab just says "onnecting" and the blue circle is spinning. It does this for a few minutes, then stops; and the file has not been uplaoded. Months ago I often had problems with upload Wizard so I went to Commons Upload. But that quit working. Vicuna uplaoder works but it is overkill to upload one photo. Bubba73 (talk) 00:56, 7 September 2016 (UTC)
I may be due to some Firefox extension. You should check them. Ruslik (talk) 12:29, 7 September 2016 (UTC)
I uninstalled Firefox, reinstalled it, and don't have any extensions. IE has the same problem. I'll check other browsers. Bubba73 (talk) 02:03, 8 September 2016 (UTC)
Google Chrome doesn't have the problem. Bubba73 (talk) 02:08, 8 September 2016 (UTC)
Do you see any errors in the browser console? Ruslik (talk) 20:48, 8 September 2016 (UTC)
By browser console, do you mean the regular browser screens? No, only problem is uploading photos. Bubba73 (talk) 05:52, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
I mean a console as described here. Ruslik (talk) 20:08, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
I found it in Firefox, but I don't know how to upload with that. Bubba73 (talk) 20:49, 10 September 2016 (UTC)

I have problems with commons:uploader or upload Wizard. Using Vicuna uploader works, but it is overkill to upload one or two photos. Bubba73 (talk) 20:54, 10 September 2016 (UTC)

And the problem is in IE and Firefox, but not Chrome. A few weeks ago I had a browser hijacker, which I got rid of, but the problem seems to have started after then. I completely uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it, and didn't add any extensions. Bubba73 (talk) 21:14, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
I asked above if there are any error messages in the console? Ruslik (talk) 20:16, 12 September 2016 (UTC)

Wimbledon College of Art

Please could someone who knows how to do this:

(a) go to the "Wimbledon College" Wikimedia Commons page

(b) remove the following image from the "Wimbledon College" page (since it does not relate to Wimbledon College):

   https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Snow2-470x352.jpg#file

(c) create a new Wikimedia Commons page for "Wimbledon College of Art" if none exists there already.

(d) put the removed image in the (new) "Wimbledon College of Art" page Wikimedia Commons page instead. (The image is already on the Wikipedia page for that institution, but is misfiled in Wikimedia Commons.)

The image has been on the Wimbledon College page for years but relates to "Wimbledon College of Art", not "Wimbledon College". It is irritating seeing it sitting in the wrong place, year after year. I don't know how to move an image from one place to another, otherwise I would do this without troubling you. Thanks. 5.150.92.82 09:50, 12 September 2016 (UTC)

Regele Carol or Amiral Murgescu?

Guys, I think we got the wrong title for a picture. It may be a historical mistake. The minelayer here is not Regele Carol I, but Amiral Murgescu, according to dedicated Romanian sources. Looking through the pictures of the forum, she does seem to more likely resemble Amiral Murgescu than the large Regele Carol I. A good hint would be the mast sizes. Regele Carol I had equal-sized masts, while Amiral Murgescu had the rear mast shorter than the front one, just like the ship in the picture. It's a very fishy situation...What do you guys think? 86.122.201.57 13:12, 12 September 2016 (UTC)

  1. add (hopefully valid) information from there into Commons:Bundesarchiv/Error reports (English is fine)? (Is there some information at all?)
  2. ask the author there for respecting copyrights at least for the image in question? I cannot see anything of this there.

adding transcripts to photos

i'd like to add transcripts of some photos to commons but i can't seem to find the correct way of doing this.

images like https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Allmystery1988.jpg could use a transcript so that it can be found better.

is there a standard way of doing this?

--Wvdp (talk) 13:25, 14 September 2016 (UTC)

Hi Wvdp, for things like inscriptions in artworks (like statues) we have Inscription, which plugs into Artwork. As far as I know, we don't have anything like this for other types of objects, so in your example it would probably just go into the "description" field of the regular Information template. --El Grafo (talk) 13:59, 14 September 2016 (UTC)
I add inscriptions like this. There may be better ways, but it works. --Magnus (talk) 14:26, 14 September 2016 (UTC)

  • We might need someone with better German than me to sort out what is going on here (or this might be just as unclear to a native speaker as it is to me!). I'm guessing this is about File:Hofbauern Feigl.jpg (this user's most recent upload, deleted at the user's own request. But I don't understand what further we can do to delete a photo that has already been deleted, nor what he or she is indicating as an intention with "dann nehme ich eben alle wieder weg" (take back all of what?) so perhaps I'm missing something here. - Jmabel ! talk 20:50, 12 September 2016 (UTC)
Jmabel, if you can see a girl (“Mädchen”) and a boy (“Junge”) on the deleted image, then everything should be fine. User Standard-Latein wanted to delete the last uploaded image depicting a boy and a girl. In the user’s upload gallery I cannot find such one. The deletion request is for personality rights. And, yes, it’s rather cryptic for me as native German, as well. It goes in this direction: “If you cannot delete this image, then delete all my images instead, but I do not know how to” … — Speravir_Talk – 02:02, 13 September 2016 (UTC)
The people in that photo are older than I would characterize as a “Mädchen” or “Junge” (the younger of two women in the photo is at least in her mid-20s, possibly older, and the only man is certainly past 30, so it's hard to be sure. But since the uploader gave a similar rationale (Personenrechte) when originally requesting deletion of that image, I'm guessing that is the one in question. Still, this remains "clear as mud." The user seems to be complaining about our failure to delete a photo that was deleted over a week ago. @Speravir: Is there any chance you could contact them in German & see if you can work out what they actually might want? - Jmabel ! talk 17:59, 13 September 2016 (UTC)
I wrote something on the user’s talk page here. I had BTW the idea, that an upload filter may have been come in between, cf. the user’s contribution history, and “Mein letztes Photo wird verweigert.” translates into “My latest photo is denied/refused.” — Speravir_Talk – 18:33, 13 September 2016 (UTC)

Upload images from open source, free PMC (pubmed central) articles?

Is it OK uploading images from a open-source free PMC article, of course providing the correct reference from where the material comes from?

Depends on whether the image is freely licensed. Even freely licensed journals can include fair use material, in which case you'll see a photo credit at the image. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 20:29, 16 September 2016 (UTC)

Why can't I upload Youtube screenshots?

I tried to upload a screenshot from [1], which is CC 3.0 licensed, and filled in the form correctly as far as I can tell. But the Wizard refused, saying "This action has been automatically identified as harmful, and therefore disallowed." Does this not count as an Adaptation? In the description I put the title of the video and said it was a screenshot, and gave the time, which I think "takes reasonable steps to clearly label, demarcate or otherwise identify that changes were made to the original Work." What did I do wrong? Kendall-K1 (talk) 00:18, 16 September 2016 (UTC)

  1. Where's the indication of the license?
  2. Probably should be fine, but the Wizard is probably going on the assumption that most stuff giving YouTube as a source is a copyvio. You can probably upload it directly with Special:Upload rather than with the Wizard. - Jmabel ! talk 00:47, 16 September 2016 (UTC)

UploadWizard has no special checks for YouTube. If it's blocked, it's blocked by a generic upload filter that will presumably reject it the same when uploading with any other tool. Matma Rex (talk) 01:21, 16 September 2016 (UTC)

Uploading files

I am trying to edit the page of a local celebrity, Roxxxy Andrews. I am attempting to upload a photo I took of her; one I had to crop myself out of; but Wikipedia is telling me that I don't have the licensing rights to it. The issue is, I took the photo, uploaded it to my facebook page, had to download it to edit it, and now I can't upload it here. Can someone please help me figure out how to upload this photo? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rjcox1979 (talk • contribs) 04:06, 17 September 2016 (UTC)

  1. You say you took the photo, but you had to crop yourself out of it. So was this essentially a selfie (because if someone else took the photo, they would own the copyright.
  2. I can't see how "Wikipedia" (by the way: this is not Wikipedia, this is Wikimedia Commons) would be "telling you" you don't have the licensing rights to it. Could you be more specific on what message you are getting, and at what URL?
  3. My guess (only a guess from this vague description) is that you gave Facebook as the source, which of course would not be an acceptable source. Presuming the photo is really by you, just be clear about it being your "own work", but also see COM:OTRS and send an email accordingly, since apparently you already published the image elsewhere (Facebook). - Jmabel ! talk 23:24, 17 September 2016 (UTC)

Clicking the 'Next' button, it flashes, but nothing happens. I'm using the Opera browser. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jkutasz (talk • contribs) 20:55, 17 September 2016 (UTC)

Would you be able to take a screenshot of the UploadWizard interface when the issue appears? (And upload it somewhere temporary, e.g. imgur.com.) Perhaps there is something wrong with it that will be obvious to an experienced editor. Are you sure there are no error messages shown? Matma Rex (talk) 23:03, 17 September 2016 (UTC)

Free vs. Fair use

I've run across a number of old Sanborn insurance maps on Google Images which make good illustrations for baseball parks. I am uncertain as to whether they are free use or fair use. Obviously the scans would be relatively recent. But the maps themselves are from the early 1900s. Before I go uploading something I shouldn't, can someone give me some guidance? Thank you! ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots11:30, 16 September 2016 (UTC)

Uploading slideshows about a particular place.

Hi there. It's just an idea, but would you allow me to upload a slideshow, about a particular place (say, as an example, Gosport, in Hampshire)?

The idea, quite simply, is that I would produce a slideshow of somewhere like Gosport. I would use a slideshow program, such as Windows Movie Maker, to assemble a number of photographs (which I, myself, would take) and would include a narration, recorded by myself and which would link the illustrative shots of the place, in question.

My name is Graham Freer and I have been a professional radio broadcaster, for more than 55 years.

I live in England - My address is 18 The Links, Gosport, Hampshire. PO13 0DU

The file File:Harris Creek Sitka Spruce.jpg has been tagged with needing additional source information. The file was uploaded from Flickr, which was listed as the source, along with the Author and the licensing information. I am not sure what else needs to be included. how do I delete my photo for the photo contest

I want to delete my photo I posted for the contest so I can upload it again with categories and geolinks. Melissa Stewart — Preceding unsigned comment added by MelissaMStewart (talk • contribs) 16:14, 18 September 2016 (UTC)

Just edit the image description page and add categories and/or coordinates (see Object location). --Magnus (talk) 16:20, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
Hi Melissa! There's no need to delete it if all you want to do is add more information to the file description page. Just edit the page like any other wiki page. Various questions user : RuleOfThirds

Hi,

1. I have no idea if I am writing, formatting the page, being contextual and co[n]cise within your criteria. Is it ok ? or if not any suggestions ?

2. I am fluent in English, Italian, Czech and German. Can I write all my articles on the one page using all these languages ? i.e. 1st paragraph in English 2nd paragraph translation into Italian of 1st paragrapgh and so on.

3. Have tried uploading a simple image of a mathematical formula. I wrote the formula in Hotoshop, and converted it into a small .jpeg When I tried uploading it, all sorts of bells and whistles and red light started going off and the procedure was dissallowed from completing by your system.

4. I see that the userName I chose [ RuleOfThirds ] also acts as title to the page. Can I change it to Rule Of Thirds ?

thanks ever so much,

Pete pete@3spam.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by RuleOfThirds (talk • contribs) 17:26, 18 September 2016 (UTC)

  • @RuleOfThirds: You are asking this on Wikimedia Commons, but your questions seem mostly to be about Wikipedia (Commons doesn't have articles). Wikipedia has separate sites for each language, so a Wikipedia article in any given language would go on that respective site. Commons is multilingual. The description for an image file can contain multiple languages, set off like English language description goes here. Italian language description goes here. etc.
  • Never heard of "Hotoshop". Is that a typo for something else, possibly "Photoshop"? Probably not relevant in any case how you made the image.
  • Generally, mathematical formulas should not be uploaded as images. See instead . No idea what specifically went wrong on your upload, unless the file was so small that it ran afoul of a filter that guessed it was too small to be a useful image. The distinct account name User:Rule of Thirds is not taken. If you want to change your account name, see en:Wikipedia:Changing username.
  • I hope that covers your various issues. - Jmabel ! talk 02:18, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

JPEG image doesn't resize properly in viewer

Image with scan-line like glitch

There's something strange happening in this image: File:Bernadotte-aktionen. Danske Røde Kors busser kører gennem Odense d. 17. april 1945 på vej til Sverige med danske fanger fra tyske koncentrationslejre (7392607518).jpg. The original file is fine, but when the software resizes it, it develops a strange glitch that looks a bit like TV scan lines. Any idea what's going on here? It's a CMYK JPEG, which is a format that's not completely supported by the server software and shouldn't be used anyhow, see Help:CMYK. --rimshottalk 21:23, 18 September 2016 (UTC)

Nomination of two fotos as featured pictures fails for the second one

I was trying to nominate - separately, of course - two of my best fotos as candidates for featured pictures. I obviously nominated both successfully. However, while I succeeded placing the first in the list of candidates, the second constantly fails to be accepted; there is only a red text line showing up in the preview and the image is not displayed. Upload of a new version of a file: Old version still the actual one?

I tried to upload a new version of the photo "File:Kittywakes (Rissa tridactyla) hunting fish at a glacier on Svalbard.jpg", since the jury for FPC requested removal of CAs. I did that and uploaded the new version. However, while the actual foto now is meant to be the new one (by means of the upload date) it still shows the CA - and hence is still the original one. I tried to reload the CA reduced version ("zurücksetzen" in the German version); but the original one still keeps being displayed. Now I have several useless versions of the foto and still not the CA reduced one to present it to the FPC nominators. What am I doing wrong? Thx for help. --AWeith (talk) 09:26, 19 September 2016 (UTC)AWeith

Adding logo of a company along with a screenshot - copyrighted

  1. What licensing tags do I need to use to add a logo of a company based in US (copyrighted)? The image was uploaded here; https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ProcessModel_Logo.png
  2. What licensing tags do I need to use to add a screenshot of a copyright protected software? The image was uploaded here; https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ProcessModel_Software_Screeshot.png

I updated the copyright tags on both images after getting a notification, are the new tags correct, if not, what do I need to add? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ProcessModel (talk • contribs) 12:36, 21 September 2016 (UTC)

  • I'm pretty certain the latter is well above threshold for copyright (way too complex for "simple geometric specs or text); the former is near the borderline (those shapes aren't so simple). You've done this right, in terms of your apparent intent, but I'm inclined to think you are wrong about the copyright status of the images. - Jmabel ! talk 18:00, 21 September 2016 (UTC)
  • Thank you for your reply. I have been looking into how other commercial softwares like Photoshop, Windows, etc have their screenshots added to wikimedia. I try to replicate the tags they have added and all it does is mark the image for speedy deletion. I have the required permissions from the software publisher to use the images in the wikipedia article. Can you, or anyone else provide help on how I should be marking the images? --ProcessModel (talk) 19:19, 21 September 2016 (UTC)
    • Permission to use in a Wikipedia article is not sufficient for Commons; we'd need permission for derivatives, for Commercial re-use, etc., as explained in COM:SCOPE, and for something like this we'd need the copyright-holder to send that permission as explained at COM:OTRS. But for Wikipedia, there may be an easier solution. Different language Wikipedias have different policies on using non-free images. If you wanted to use it in the English-language Wikipedia, and it is relevant to an article there, it might be acceptable to upload directly to the English-language Wikipedia rather than to Commons. You would use en:Template:Non-free use rationale in place of the "Information" template. For other languages, you'd have to check their policies one-by-one for whether they allow this (e.g. German does not). - Jmabel ! talk 19:31, 21 September 2016 (UTC)
    • I have just updated the copyright tags on the screenshot image. Can you please check both to see if they make sense and can stay on Wikimedia? I tried uploading directly to English wikipedia and it asks me that "I attest that I own the copyright on this file, and agree to irrevocably release this file to Wikimedia Commons under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license". So I can not use that. If the new tags that I added are still not acceptable, I will start reading on en:Template:Non-free use rationale to see how else I can use them. Thank you for all your help so far. --ProcessModel (talk) 19:53, 21 September 2016 (UTC)
      • I don't think we can accept the condition that they be notified of all uses. Also, any licensing permissions from someone other than the uploader need either to be posted verifiably at the site of the rights-holder or need to come through COM:OTRS. I think en-wiki non-free use is a better bet for you here. - Jmabel ! talk 00:05, 22 September 2016 (UTC)

  • We don't normally delete older versions: we keep the full history of what has happened. A "deletion" is really just hiding from normal users (admins can still see it), doesn't save any disk space.
  • In general, TIFFs, while allowed, are not a preferred format. - Jmabel ! talk 18:05, 21 September 2016 (UTC)

Maybe it just takes some time for the software to process new uploads. For me, both maps are showing a red cross so I guess it is now working. This, however, is very to hard to spot because it is "buried" under a Wikimedia Commons symbol, but if you zoom in on the location you'll also see the marker. Question about the PD-Art tag

I have a question about PD-Art tag. I have read Commons:Licensing and Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag and I am still not sure whether or not it is Ok to use the PD-Art tag in the specific case I am interested in. Namely, I would like to upload a small picture of Louis Barnett Abrahams taken from a June 27, 1905 edition of the British newspaper "The Sphere", see here[7], on page 282 at the top, the portrait in the middle. The picture itself is a photo of a portrait drawn by Solomon J. Solomon. The name of the person who took the photo is not specified. Since the newspaper was published in the U.K., and the portrait itself was drawn there as well, and this happened before January 1, 1923, my impression is that if I cut out the photo of the portrait, e.g. like this[8], the resulting image would be considered to be in public domain in the U.S. However, I am still not sure if I am allowed to upload such an image to Commons with the PD-Art tag. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks, Nsk92 (talk) 02:43, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

  • 1923 is relevant only for the U.S.
  • A faithful photograph of a 2-dimensional public domain work is still public domain. If the original is in the public domain, then so is the photograph. - Jmabel ! talk 15:55, 23 September 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, but I am not sure how that resolves my problem. My impression is that the image in question is definitely in public domain in the U.S., but may or may not be in public domain in its country of origin, the U.K. The reason for the latter is that under the U.K. law the copyright protection expires 70 years after the author's death. In this case that would mean that in the U.K. the image is in public domain if the author died prior to 1946. The portrait was drawn in 1905, and we have no information on when the author died. He could have died before 1946 or after 1946. Regardless, because the portrait was produced before 1923, my understanding is that the photo is considered to be in public domain in the U.S. So I am still unclear on what the bottom line conclusion is regarding the possible usage of he PD-Art tag in this case. Nsk92 (talk) 19:03, 23 September 2016 (UTC)
You mentioned the author. If he's him, he died in 1927. On Commons, some users would use PD-old-90. Depends if you are ok with it. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:11, 23 September 2016 (UTC)
Yes, it is indeed him. I did not realize this fact until another editor at Wikipedia pointed this out. The caption in the newspaper identifies the painter of the portrait as Solomon J. Solomon, R.A.. The postnomials R.A. mean member of the Royal Academy of Arts, and there was only one Solomon J. Solomon who was a member of the academy at the time, so I think that definitively identifies him as the painter of the portrait. Before I figured this out, I have already uploaded the image to en-wiki, because I was certain that the image is in public domain in the U.S. but not certain if it is in the public domain in the U.K. Nsk92 (talk) 00:02, 24 September 2016 (UTC)

Hello, This is the help desk page for Commons, the media website. Your question is not about Commons. It is apparently about lt.wikipedia, the encyclopedia. You should consult the policies on lt.wikipedia and try to contact someone from lt.wikipedia if you need explanations about something there. All we know here is what you see in the comment you quoted above: the administrator on lt.wikipedia considered that your account was only for publicity. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:04, 23 September 2016 (UTC)
You tried to add information about a company which does not appear to be relevant for inclusion in an encyclopedia and for which you have a paid conflict of interest. As far as I know, that's not allowed on any language edition of Wikipedia. You may wish to read Commons:Guidance for paid editors.
As already noted, you're also on the wrong web site. If you look at the address bar of your browser (a good habit to get into if you want to avoid falling victim to phishing), you'll notice that you are on Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia. If you have further questions about the specifics about why you were blocked on some other site, I suggest you ask at that site. LX (talk, contribs) 14:22, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Permission

How do you ask someone who took a picture that you can use their photo for Wikimedia Commons? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bryson483 (talk • contribs) 23:28, 24 September 2016 (UTC)

  • Pretty much the same way you ask for anything else. Do you know the person? If not, do you have a common language? Are they a professional photographer? Do they probably know what Commons is? Do they have any history of free-licensing photos? Is the photo already online in digital form? Is there exactly one photo you want to use, or are you looking to make a broader arrangement? Without answers to questions like that it would be pretty hard to give you at all a detailed answer, but there is one thing for certain: you'll need to have them give permisssion as explained at COM:OTRS. Just your word for having permission won't be enough for you to upload here. - Jmabel ! talk 02:33, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

  • Page from a movie's original scenario (text cannot really be read)
  • Two planning documents of a movie set
  • Cards from a TV presenter with text on a side and logo of the show on the other side

Can those be free pictures?

Thanks for your help, FR (talk) 20:30, 24 September 2016 (UTC)

  • That's a lot of different questions! Several of these are marginal calls, so don't upload them if you will be offended about your wasted time if they get deleted. If that's no problem, I'd suggest that you link the uploads here so someone can follow up and make judgments based on something more concrete.
    1. For the exhibition: if any of the paintings are copyrighted and are legible, you might consider covering them with a Gaussian blur. It's hard to say something general without seeing the image, because there is no way for me to know how legible any one painting might be. See File:Georgetown Rainier malt house interior 03 - blurred.jpg for an example where I did this: click through and you'll see that they are quite blurred.
    2. If the text is not legible, I'm guessing there would be no problem, but again, it could be otherwise.
    3. Unless you are the author of the planning documents, that's probably not your prerogative. They'd be inherently copyrighted.
    4. I'd guess not OK, but hard to say without seeing it. Is the logo just text and simple geometric shapes? If so, it would not be eligible for copyright (although thresholds vary in different countries, and you didn't say what country). If the text is just name, address, etc. then it's not copyrightable, but if there is, say, a few sentences of slogan, it might be.
  • I hope that helps. - Jmabel ! talk 02:44, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

Uploading photos

Hi. I have two photos of an MP I want to upload. The MP has emailed them to me - and granted full and free permission to use them on Wikipedia under a free licence. ( Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 License??) I have the email ready and willing to send off to the OTRS people for confirmation. Am I alright to upload? Myosotis Scorpioides

  • (The following presumes that the MP is indeed the copyright holder. As the subject of the photo he/she may not be: usually copyright resides with the photographer.) Forward the email to COM:OTRS. They prefer to get them directly, but I presume that if the original email address is visible in the forward, that should suffice. You might want to cc the original address so they know it's legit. Then when you upload, remember to add OTRS pending so that someone looking at the file page can see what's going on. - Jmabel ! talk 14:58, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Karikatur-Hattar.gif

Ich habe das Bild aus dem Jordanian Satirist Arrested For Cartoon Mocking ISIS. Welche Lizenz kann ich angeben, dass es auf wikimedia bleibt?

--SamsMarsRover (talk) 22:17, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

Wenn ich das richtig sehe, bisher gar keine. In Commons sind nur creative commons-Lizenzen erlaubt. Du müsstest nachweisen können, dass der Autor die Karikatur unter einer solchen Lizenz veröffentlicht hat. --Furfur Diskussion 22:26, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
Was heisst das Konkret?
--Furfur Diskussion 05:23, 26 September 2016 (UTC)

Jeff Davis Show on Wikipedia

I have hosted the 24 year running "Jeff Davis Show" from Austin Texas I have covered many interesting, ground breaking and exclusive stories and information. I have the show on many social media forums and would love a "Jeff Davis Show" wikipedia page. I have tons of videos, news stories, photos, etc Sincerely,

  • This is Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia. There are no articles here, nor is it the place to make a case on whether your show is notable enough for a Wikipedia article (you'd have to convince Wikipedia editors of that; for what it's worth the, key to that is to find third-party writing about your show).
  • On the other hand, for materials to which you own copyright, if you are willing to release them under a free license, those would probably be welcome here. - Jmabel ! talk 16:02, 26 September 2016 (UTC)

Adding a Category

I want to add a sub-category "Episcopal Hymnals" to the category "Hymnals". I have read up on how to add a category and know the images that I want to include in the new sub-category. But how will I know that the new sub will be under the existing parent cat? Under Commons:Category it says to add: "Category-links that put it into one or more parent categories. At the bottom of the new page, insert lines of the form ." But how do I accomplish this if I use the category wizard? Thanks, Drbones1950 (talk) 19:45, 27 September 2016 (UTC)

  • I have created Category:Episcopal hymnals for you (not different capitalization, following Commons normal rules for this). I have no idea about a "category wizard", but when you want to create a new category, you can just navigate to the where the category page would be and click the "Create" button. - Jmabel ! talk 05:11, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

Uploading our updated logo to our wikipedia page

Hi there, I'd like to add our new logo to our charity's wikipedia page. Is there a way to do this? It seems logos aren't allowed on commons pages so I can't figure out how to add it to our wikipedia page. Thank you, Emma. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Digitalmanager16 (talk • contribs) 09:31, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

  • I'm guessing (since you are writing in English) that you mean the English-language Wikipedia. Unlike Commons, that does accept copyrighted images on a non-free use basis. I'm guessing (though you don't say, and you don't indicate the name of the organization) that your new logo qualifies for copyright, and that is the issue.
  • In the English-language Wikipedia, read en:Wikipedia:Non-free_content_criteria to make sure you understand the policy; then you will want to upload your image in the English-language Wikipedia, not in Commons, at en:Special:Upload and probably use en:Template:Non-free logo in your upload. - Jmabel ! talk 15:04, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

File:Barkley Thompson at the Christ Church Cathedral (Episcopal) in Houston, Texas, Lenten Lecture Series 2014.png

I would like to request deletion of this image because there is an exact duplicate image (except better resolution) existing in the same category (Episcopal Church (USA)). Is this something that would qualify for "speedy deletion"? In future, is this the way to request removal of an image or is there a better way? Thanks, Drbones1950 (talk) 15:23, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

You can mark the page of the small file with Dupe. The other image, File:Barkley Thompson Lenten Lecture Series 2014.jpg, seems to be the smaller one, so I marked that one. BMacZero (talk) 17:53, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

Verifying OTRS letters from people with little or no Internet connection

Wiki Learning Tec de Monterrey (an approved WMF user group [10] is currently working on its annual "Semana i" projects. One of the activities this week is the videoing of interviews with notable Mexican artists, or in some cases, family of deceased artists. Several have offered images of artists and works for Wikipedia. I have explained free licenses etc and they are willing to sign stuff over to CC-by-SA 4.0. However, most of these are older people with little or no Internet presence. I would like to know if Commons would accept verification of the letters (really from and signed by the person indicated) from Wiki Learning Tec de Monterrey, sent from my Tec de Monterrey email address. Getting the Lead/Main article image via the API

Hello Community!

I've been trying to use the API to retrieve the main/lead article image but I haven't found a way to do that. Using Chris Farley as an example: Thefollowing would give me the image of the grave stone: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&prop=pageimages&format=json&titles=Chris_Farley

While https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&prop=images&format=json&titles=Chris_Farley would give me a list of the images on the page, but with no indicator to say which image is the main one.

Update: If I go to https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Chris_Farley&action=info I see the same result I would see in the API call (which is different than https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Farley [top image on the right] ) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hibans (talk • contribs) 02:06, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

Anyone has a clue?

PageImages seems to do what you want. But see the "Image Choice" section of that linked page, which says that "Non-free images may be skipped for copyright reasons", and the first image on the Chris Farley page is non-free. --ghouston (talk) 02:51, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

Verunka

  • I'm not sure why you are asking this here on Wikimedia Commons. Although Wikimedia Commons, the English-language Wikipedia, and the French-language Wikipedia are all Wikimedia Foundation projects, they are basically separately run. I might have missed something (French is about my 7th-best language) but you don't seem to be asking for anything pertinent to this site. If you are, could you please repeat the particular point with which you want help here? - Jmabel ! talk 15:08, 22 September 2016 (UTC)
  • Of course if a French-speaker sees something relevant here that I've missed, please help this user! - Jmabel ! talk 15:08, 22 September 2016 (UTC)

Category:Images_from_Fortepan and Category:Colour photographs_from_Fortepan

Category:Images_from_Fortepan has 69.855 images, Category:Colour photographs from Fortepan has 5129. Impossible to investigate in categorisation, as you can only switch page by page by 200 images. Is it - via a bot - possible to split up these categories in categories by 1000 or so? Or is there an other way? --Stunteltje (talk) 08:25, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

  • You could -- for example -- use VFC to mark the ones in Category:Colour photographs from Fortepan that are also in Category:Images_from_Fortepan. But I'm not sure what exactly you are trying to do, so maybe that wouldn't be useful. - Jmabel ! talk 15:10, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
    • It is not my intention to delete files. I just want categories of say 1000 files, otherwise I cannot categorise files say 40.365 to 41.365, because I have to click per 200 files, starting at 201 every time. Doesn't work. --Stunteltje (talk) 19:16, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
      • I'm confused by your last remark. I didn't suggest anything about deleting files. I was suggesting that you could use VFC to attach a temporary category (or other searchable mark) to files you wanted to work on. Perhaps I jumped to a conclusion in thinking you were looking for the intersection between these two categories you mentioned.
      • What exactly is it you are trying to do (intended end result)? - Jmabel ! talk 04:26, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
        • Not you, but VFC asked the deletion when I tried it without installing. What I want is to start all over again after a categorisation, but with file 201, 1201, 2201 ..... 41401, 42601 .... and so on. So not more than about 1000 files. Otherwise when a file was categorised, I have to start with file 1 again. That's all. A solution like the new uploaded files: (new | oldest) (50 new | 50 old) (20 | 50 | 100 | 250 | 500) bekijken. But to start with a self given digit. --Stunteltje (talk) 07:23, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
          • I'm not sure about VFC without installing, but VFC has a dropdown (where there default is to nominate for deletion, which I personally find annoying but so be it) that lets you choose to substitute text, append text, etc. But that sounds like it won't work for you here, anyway. So let's try a different question: Is there an easy way to see content of these categories starting alphabetically either at a particular offset from the beginning or at a particular file? It looks in this case like the category sort keys may be a little weird, so a generic answer may not do it for you here. - Jmabel ! talk 16:41, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
