Wikipedia Play Africa Competition Files Flagged Redundant

Hello TCells,

Some of my pictures were flagged redundant. Pls kindly review the files flagged. They are original pictures taken by me at the events stated in Jos Nigeria. You can observe from the mrta data information and also the multiple pictures uploaded of one scene. Please kindly restore it & remedy this anomaly. Hi T Cells. As I am new with the LR right, I have a question to ask. If the stated source of the file is no longer available, how should the file be dealt with? 大诺史 by "no longer available" do you meant the source is no longer accessible and you have no idea of under which license it was previously uploaded to Commons? @大诺史: Try archive.org. As the link was not found there, try Google cache. As it's not there either, try finding it in Bing cache. (doesn't seem to be there either) You can contact the uploader, but at this point it's probably a loss. - Alexis Jazz ^{ping plz} 06:20, 4 August 2019 (UTC)

大诺史, chances are that the video has been deleted from YouTube. That happens most of the time and there is nothing Commons can do about what happens on external websites. That being said, the image was imported from YouTube by a trusted user, User:Explicit, and I assumed they verified that the file was available there under the stated license on that date prior to importing here. Thus, if this is the case, the license cannot be revoked even thou the source link is broken or the license has changed, the same way a license cannot be revoked if any Flickr file change their license in the site after they have been verified here on Commons. You can't verify the license as you cannot access the source but may be passed if User:Explicit confirm that the file was available there under the stated license on that date prior to importing here. T Cells^Talk 07:07, 4 August 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the ping, Alexis Jazz is bang on - The only way you can verify it would be to view a cached version however there's no longer cached versions available so as such the only option we have is to decline the licence and delete. –Davey2010^Talk 11:32, 4 August 2019 (UTC)

@大诺史: I forgot one method: search Commons. (insource:"X-TuJSVGbeY") Sometimes there is another file uploaded from the same source (like a screenshot) that has already been reviewed. In this case no such luck. - Alexis Jazz ^{ping plz} 15:00, 4 August 2019 (UTC)

@大诺史: Generally prefer DR. The uploader (Explicit) is an admin/license reviewer so it's best to let the uploader handle it in this particular case. If any other (reasonably trusted) user can confirm it was available under a CC license at the time, Explicit could review it. Of course, we have to take into consideration why the YouTube account was terminated. We don't actually know, but copyright violations are a common reason for account termination. - Alexis Jazz ^{ping plz} 15:14, 4 August 2019 (UTC)

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

• To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
• To perform file name swaps.
• When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Ash - you weren't asked for your opinion here. I understand to a degree your urge for solidarity here on the "island of misfits" where "all is forgiven and nothing else should matter", given your own history, but that's an unrealistic expectation, given human nature (see your own RFA requests if you doubt that), and I nevertheless urge wikicology to take my request very seriously.

I'm not only asking for an "apology" but far more importantly an immediate withdrawal of a bizarre, unsupported suggestion of socking. Accusations of socking without evidence are not something to be taken lightly. I've never socked myself, but I do believe you're personally very familiar with the principle. Ash? Could you share with us your real life name or your LinkedIn profile? Asking as you are deliberately provoking me by using names that I do not use on this project as a harassment tactic. Please do something more obvious that I can quietly report to WMF Legal and we can get you globally locked from all projects rather than childishly poking the bear. I don't believe I'm "deliberately provoking" anything. I've only ever used one name on wikimedia projects. Your previous names are well documented at your RFA requests (you even confessed to some of them, though, I'm led to believe, not all of them, as was mandated by English arbcom). Sorry if you thought abbreviating one of the many was presumptious, I tried to choose the most "real" - apologies if I got that wrong. Hi @T Cells: if you feel that Begoon is harassing or hounding you, please do take the evidence to ANU. This user is obviously looking for a fight, to import grudges from other places, to find an excuse to make legal threats, and to harass other contributors, not to support the mission of this project. Rather than arguing with this person, it may be more productive than noticeboards to raise any evidence of on-wiki or off-wiki harassment with WMF Legal directly. Commons Photographers User Group: Meeting on September 26 and other stuff

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I've got a quick update for you, containing three items:

• I’d like to invite you to our group’s second Virtual Meeting on Saturday, September 26, 2020. As last time, this meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic. If you'd like to present, please add your name and the proposed topic to the list on the talk page.
• Also, I'd like to start a conversation about how we should be sharing responsibility for the user group going forward. I'd love to get some help when it comes to organizing things and I'm convinced that we can achieve more if a couple of people helped with coordinating stuff.
• Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has asked me to spread the word about their latest survey: Universal Code of Conduct Survey. The goal is to create a safer environment on Wikimedia projects and the Foundation gathers feedback prior to coming up with a first draft.

Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.

Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.

Question from the CPUG Board

Dear user group member,

I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.

With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.

That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.

However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:

Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you

Dear fellow Commons photographer,

I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.

At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.
