Weak oppose It's a good photo, with decent detail and good bokeh. It's probably worth nominating for QI, but the standard for such a common subject at FPC is very high (it appears to be a feral pigeon btw, not a Barbary dove; I've removed it from that category). My main objection in this case is the composition -- it's too wide for where the subject is in the frame. Basile, as Aristeas has explained here and here, there is no such thing as un uncalibrated Adobe RGB ICC profile. If your computer is not able to consistently display images that include an ICC profile (like this one), then something is wrong with your computer, not the image. Nothing is wrong with my excellent and recent (2021) high end laptop, in my opinion. It's subtile but very clear. Differences are noticeable when the two pictures are superimposed, one coming from a program, and the second from another. In this case the intense blue and turquoise probably come from a Polarizing filter. That increases the effect -- Basile Morin (talk) 22:51, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Here's one thing you can try: put the two images side by side, grab a screenshot, open it on Photoshop, and use the colour picker to sample the same pixel on both images. The problem is probably not the laptop, but the software configuration. Photoshop e.g. can be configured to handle colour spaces in many different way, many of them being dangerous and leading to a wrong display of colours. Adobe sometimes messes with the program settings during updates (I have experienced this myself), so it is at least possible that even without our knowledge the software is configured in a wrong way. Guys, 2 tests made: 1) The original AdobeRGB, 2) The same file converted sRGB.
Conclusions: Very clearly different colors displayed on Chrome and Photoshop when the file is AdobeRGB, and exactly the same colors displayed on Chrome and Photoshop when the file is sRGB. It's so funny that I made the expected observations with this method you both suggest! To be sure, I made the same test with one of my RAW, the first one processed in sRGB and the second in AdobeRGB.
Sorry guys, but if you intended to convert somone to your weird speculations, it's completely failed, lol. Believe my good faith. After your insistance, I honestly started to suppose that maybe something could be discovered, but on the contrary, these observations confirm my personal feeling: better to avoid AdobeRGB (for the web) and opt for sRGB instead. Info: My Photoshop is properly calibrated sRGB.
Now, the good news after all these time-consuming operations, looking so close at the picture so many times, is that I noticed 2 more severe stitching errors: one in the middle, and one right of center. It means the withdrawal of the nominator is totally justified and very wise .

Comment first of all, Thanks to Ikan Kekek for the nomiation! I really appreciate it. Regarding the notes and other question: I fixed the tilt, I found the dead pixels (coming froming the 25sec expos., not using the reduction for it) ... the colors: I got curious, because usually I don´t do a lot of processing, except using hdr´s from time to time if light makes it easier or I can´t use filters. Usually other photographers tell me to add more saturation and so on. I uploaded the original RAW image here: Ethiopia - Lake Assale (raw image, no editing) Details of the shot: tripod, ND-filter, GND-filter, ISO 100, 25sec, f/8,0. The low ISO and low shutter speed explains the nice soft colors. And yes, it was a really blue to purple hour. Thhe whole set of images are crazy. Detail of editing: Exposure +0,63; contrast +24; highlights -100; shadows +22; whites -40; blacks -3; clarity +8; vibrance +12; saturation +32; no tone curve edits; no HSL or Color edits. I don't know about this photographer's editing processes, but Camera Raw and Photoshop/Lightroom always output "Uncalibrated" for me when I save a JPG even though I have the colour space set in program (Google search suggests this is pretty common). Watching this image through 3 different devices, the aspects are very far to each other. And that's because the colors space has not been set, IMO. I have exactly the same camera, and my original files are all sRGB, either recorded in CR2 or in JPG. As I always shoot in CR2 +JPG simultaneously, it is easy to verify. Moreover the metadata of the original JPG coming out from the camera have no "Tint" section. Due to obscure historical reasons the ‘Color space’ tag has only two possible values: ‘sRGB’ or ‘uncalibrated’. The value ‘uncalibrated’ (a very misleading name) just means that the colour space has not been defined as sRGB; every picture with another colour space will be labelled as ‘uncalibrated’. This photo contains an embedded colour profile, namely Adobe RGB. The Adobe RGB (1998) colour space has its problems, of course, but it is widespread and a valid choice – it represents e.g. rich cyans, turquoise and green tones, shades of orange and generally dark and saturated colours better than sRGB. So on the colour space/profile side everything is technically OK, the image is tagged correctly. (I have verified this with Photoshop 24.4.1, Apple’s ‘ColorSync Utility’ and exiftool.) The varying display on different devices must have some other reason – often devices are not able to display all AdobeRGB colours, and even today software is often still ignoring or mis-interpreting embedded colour profiles, assuming sRGB regardless of the actual colour profile embedded in a photo. --Aristeas (talk) 08:52, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Aristeas: it is perfectly possible with Photoshop to attribute a sRGB color profile, so that the exif are correct to use on Commons: Edition -> Attribute a profile, then select sRGB. I made a try and it works. Also Commons:Image guidelines#Color space recommends: "It is safest to use sRGB: which is the default on most computers, including Windows and Mac OS X 10.6 and later. Images in other color spaces will not render correctly at all in many web browsers". Certainly ;–). I just wanted to point out that this photo does not miss colour space information (as that stupid ‘uncalibrated’ name suggests) but has an embedded ICC colour profile. Whether one wants to use colour spaces/profiles besides sRGB is something each editor must decide. Personally I use AdobeRGB when I notice that converting an image to sRGB would cause a loss of colours which is visible on good screens; these colours may not be visible on all devices (this is why I include that warning). Personally I think when person x uses a browser or setup which does not respect colour profiles, this is a problem of person x. Wikimedia Commons is a media archive with many uses, not only for on-screen display; many of the colours contained in AdobeRGB, but missing in sRGB can even be printed in ordinary offset printing, therefore I regard these extra colours as really useful, unlike the many other possible colours in more exotic colour spaces which often can neither be viewed on usual devices nor printed. – That sentence from Commons:Image guidelines#Color space is a bit dated; it refers to old software like Mac OS X 10.6 and Firefox 3.5 (oh yes, I remember them well, but I am old, too ;–). Since a couple of year at least on macOS most applications, including browsers, automatically respect colour profiles and try to display photos containing colour profiles as accurately as possible. I have been told that it is possible to achieve the same on Windows. So IMHO that sentence should be updated to the hint that whenever one wants to upload a picture in any other colour space besides sRGB, one should always make sure that it contains the correct colour profile; and that for simple images which do not need colour accuracy, e.g. for maps, one should best just use sRGB. --Aristeas (talk) 11:11, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that's your own interpretation, that I respect but do not share. For 2 reasons, 1) Macintosh environment represents about 10% only of the whole market, 2) if Adobe RGB was really better, with no drawbacks, then this profile would be recommend here. On the contrary, the aspect of non-sRGB images is often too far from what we expect (here). Secondly, the CANON 5D mark IV instruction manual confirms page 217: "Adobe RGB: This color space is mainly used for commercial printing and other industrial uses." And that’s your interpretation; I think we can differ here and continue with two different views. :–) – I have referred to macOS only because I use this system for photo editing and therefore know it best in respect to colour reproduction. But I have good news: the same seems to be true today at least when viewing photos with Firefox on Windows 10 and Linux, too, without any additional configuration. I have taken the time to view some of my photos in AdobeRGB and sRGB on my wife’s office computer (a good, but fairly standard Windows 10 office laptop with a simple display) and on the Linux machine I use for programming (Linux Mint with default settings, a simple office monitor). On both machines Firefox handles AdobeRGB photos automatically correctly, wow! Of course it cannot display all colours, because the screens of both machines cannot reproduce them, but it displays them as good as possible, namely exactly as a correctly converted sRGB file. This means that today Firefox applies some colour management by default. (Firefox is just an example. If Firefox can do this automatically, every photo editing should be able to do it, too.) So we have obviously made some progress. – But even when this does not work on every computer, my view is that by publishing a photo on Wikimedia Commons I offer it not only for on-screen Wikipedia use and display on smartphones etc., but also for many other uses which may benefit from using a larger colour space. – The quotation from the 5D III manual certainly refers to out-of-camera JPEG files. When we set a colour space in a camera (many models allow to select either sRGB or AdobeRGB), this concerns only the JPEG files created by the camera. The raw image files from good cameras contain a wider palette of colours than sRGB or AdobeRGB encompass; in the raw converter we can select which colour space should be used for editing (if we select here sRGB, we already throw away many colours), and finally, when saving the result, we can again convert the file to another colour space (this is IMHO a good place to convert to sRGB, if we want so). An AdobeRGB file will only look very subdued when an application does not match/convert the colours, but just assumes that the file is in sRGB (this is what the old browsers did). As described above, this is not longer the case: today even on Windows or Linux machines with default setup, Firefox displays the photos with contrast, white and blacks, by converting the colour space, and many other applications should be able to do that, too, at least every photo editing application. Then there is also ProPhoto RGB color space which is larger than Adobe RGB :-) Not a reference, probably for good reasons. In my experience, the "uncalibrated" (= non-sRGB) color space is most often detectable because of a visual discomfort. That means the colors display weird on the screen. Sometimes oversaturated. The ProPhoto RGB color space and the Wide-gamut RGB color space are excellent working colour spaces, but it makes no sense to use them with 8 bit per colour channel, for a proper representation of the large amount of colours provided by these colour spaces at least 16 bit per colour channel are necessary. And this is also the reason why they are useful for editing (and maybe archival purposes), but not (yet) for the final photos uploaded to Commons: the traditional JPEG format does not support 16 bit per colour channel, we would have to use JPEG2000 (not supported here?!) or the good old TIFF (still not supported well by Mediawiki software). – Oh yeah, I know that warning on Commons:Image guidelines#Color space and the hint in your camera manual well. I have read them a hundred times. The wording goes back to the 2000s, maybe even to the late 1990s; these warnings have been repeated, almost word for word, again and again; but people forget to check them, they just repeat them, “to be on the save side“. These warnings are still valid today regarding files without an embedded colour profile – these will display more or less correctly only when the colours correspond to sRGB. But are these warnings really valid for a reasonable part of today’s devices with photos that contain a correctly embedded colour profile? You are so right that we should not draw generalities from a few local observations. But why then do you draw generalities from your local observations? I have provided evidence that today even some cheap, mainstream devices without any configuration are not necssarily subject to the faulty display of non-sRGB photos, as it was the case in the past and as the warnings from the 2000s suggest. You say that I have just catched some lucky exceptions, and that most devices still ignore or misunderstand colour profiles. That seems a tiny little bit unlikely, but if you really want a definitive answer, we must stop here and ask somebody who knows exactly about the state of art of colour profile handling in today’s mainstream software on today’s mainstream OS on today’s mainstream computers, tablets and phones. No, you extrapolate my position here. All the screens don't display well the uncalibrated photos, and even though you're convinced of the contrary, the consensus does not currently support your impression. But a majority of experts in 2023 seem to think the other way: images should be sRGB, and if not, that is not their problem.

I can't believe I missed this chance to nerd out, I hope you guys are not done yet! :) Basile, my understanding is that indeed most, but not all, current software is able to accurately display AdobeRGB images i.e. to convert them on the fly to sRGB with minimal loss of colour fidelity. I've tried Aristeas' example below on a trio of platforms (Windows, Mac, and iOS) and a couple of browsers each, and image (A) displayed correctly on all six combinations (with just a hint of extra saturation). Defaulting to sRGB for taking images and uploading them somewhere is certainly the best option for most applications, but there are exceptions. For instance, photographers and graphic designers that work with both print and online media use a monitor with nearly 100% coverage of both Adobe RGB and sRGB (e.g., these), so that they get the best out of both worlds (wider gamut of colours for Adobe RGB, less posterisation in 8-bit exports for sRGB). I welcome Aristeas' initiative to offer images with different colour spaces where necessary, allowing the end user to choose the most appropriate one for their intended purpose. More good news, before somebody calls out “Firefox is niche, too”: AdobeRGB photographs also display well with Microsoft Edge on the same Windows 10 machine. Even better, they even display well in the nameless default browser installed on my smartphone, wow. Here is a quick test everybody who is interested can try: (A) AdobeRGB file with correct profile, (B) sRGB file with correct profile, (C) AdobeRGB file with sRGB profile (intentional error). Please open (A), (B) and (C), each in full size, in three tabs or windows. Then compare the colours. If (A) looks like (B), your machine cannot display the extra colours of the AdobeRGB colour space, but correctly matches them to sRGB – fine, colour management is working. If (A) looks like (B), but with a deeper blue in the sky, then congrats, your machine can even display some of the extra colours in AdobeRGB. If (A) looks like (C), your machine does not understand colour profiles at all, but handles all RGB files as sRGB. This is what the old warning meant when speaking about “subdued” or faded colours. Well, this is interesting. I see it the same way as @Aristeas. The light and color surly depends on cloud coverage, sun, dust and probably many other things in the atmosphere/sky. So shooting two images at the same time doesn´t mean the colors will be same, right? Have you ever seen a sunset/sunrise in central Europe impacted by the Saharan Air Layer. I guess there are plenty impacts like this. IMHO the colors of the sky and therefore the landscape look different every single day. We all see this every single day beeing outdoors taking this beautiful images and uploading them here. The color space is AdobeRGB, yes. Fixed but currently not yet uploaded? Should we conclude that the file named "File:Ethiopia - Lake Assale (raw image, no editing).jpg" is actually an edited version with a misleading name? If so, it is important to fix this error as soon as possible by uploading an update, in my opinion, or to delete the wrong file. Support Beautiful. And, to my eye, the colours look perfectly attainable. Lighting can change drastically, depending on atmospheric conditions, the angle of the camera towards the sun, and the sun's elevation, so comparing this image with others of the same location doesn't tell much (e.g., this and this were shot at the same location within less than 5 minutes). The camera's white balance setting and the Raw processor demosaicing algorithm will further influence colours, making it very hard for anyone but the photographer to assess if the resulting image is faithful to what his eyes are seeing. In a nutshell: are these colours possible? Yes. Were they like that when the image was taken? If Snowmanstudios asserts they were, then they were. Does it really matter? InfoUnfinished obelisk, Aswan, Egypt. It's the largest known ancient obelisk and located in the northern region of the stone quarries of ancient Egypt of Aswan. The obelisk and wider quarry were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979 along with other examples of Upper Egyptian architecture, as part of the "Nubian Monuments from Abu Simbel to Philae". Its creation was ordered by Hatshepsut (1508–1458 BC) and is nearly one-third larger than any ancient Egyptian obelisk ever erected. If finished it would have measured around 41.75 metres (137.0 ft). Comment That one works better for me, it's got a mysterious feel about it. Neither of them gives any usable clues about the location though. I like the idea, but before reading the description I was struggling to make a connection between the watch and the moss. Oppose The problem of the over-contrasted images of this kind is that they seem to have been copied, manipulated, many times from a distant original, like a photocopy on paper which has lost all its shades. It gives the impression of an inaccurate reproduction of another artwork. Oppose Sorry, but the plane’s wing is hiding a part of the Chinese balloon; at the first glance the balloon looks like a part of the wing. Most of the picture is uninteresting out-of-focus stuff like the pilot’s helmet. That unsharp thing protruding from the left into the window does not help the composition, and I wonder why the focus is obviously on the wing – either the cockpit or the balloon should have been in focus. In the end we are seeing not much in this photo, neither of the aircraft nor of the balloon nor of earth. Maybe this is a great shot for the friends of military stuff, but as a photo it just does not work. Supplement: You could try to nominate this one as a FP on the English Wikipedia. For Wikipedia FPs the eduational value of a photo is often considered as very/most important, much more than here on Commons where we emphasize the technical and aesthetical quality. I'm voting against, but I can understand other people consider the main subject here is the cyclist. Then they don't really care about the background. The most logical explanation for the perspective issue is the camera was oriented upwards. To make the Buddhist graves vertical, the camera should have been parallel to the wall (inducing extra space at the bottom, to cut off later) or the perspective fixed in post-process.
The problem here is that the gallery chosen for this photo is Architecture. Our guidelines are quite clear concerting the distorsions: Images should not be unintentionally tilted. Images of architecture should usually be rectilinear. Perspective distortion should either have a purpose or be insignificant. Yes, it has some perspective and\or distortion problem, but it is really beautiful, and it is obvious, that editing would mean significant retouching changes. On the other hand, frankly, from aesthetical point of view our "verticals should be vertical" rule makes not all, but many of our architecture images look unnatural and sometimes even ugly in my eyes. Besides the leaning verticals there was also some lens distortion (barrel type) which had to be fixed. It was not possible to get all verticals straight; seems that both (some of) the Buddhist graves and the ornamental merlons are slightly leaning in reality. I suppose the revision is somewhat better, overall, but we can't escape noticing that the main obvious difference is that different gravestones are leaning in each version. Thanks. It seems very obvious to me that the perspective in the corrected version is fine, and definitely more realistic than this one above. Thus I will remove my oppose if it's nominated here. I agree that the Buddhist graves are not always perfectly vertical (I myself experienced the difficulty in this photograph), however the difference between both pictures is very explicit in my view. One is leaning in due to camera orientation, and the other one respects the quality guidelines. Concerning the recommendations (for non-tilted candidates), the implementation depends on the angle. In this case, with enough distance, I see no reason not to respect them. Otherwise it gives the impression that the graves are naturally tilted (which is wrong). I was just curious because often people use such settings only for an intentional long-exposure effect, but I saw no benefit for an intentionally long exposure with this subject. The settings are understandable if you needed them for the necessary depth of field etc. It may not have been necessary to go down to ISO 50. Some cameras have a real base ISO value below 100; e.g. on Nikon’s D850 or Z7 using ISO 64 will give us less noise and more dynamic range than with ISO 100. But on cameras with a base ISO value of 100 lower ISO values are usually just pulled from ISO 100, i.e. we get a longer exposure, but no improvement in dynamic range or regarding noise. According to Photons to Photos this also applies to the 5D IV (see 1 and 2 for dynamic range; 3 shows a small read-noise benefit for ISO 50, but 4 shows a small disadvantage, so it’s even). It's not a contradiction. ISO 50 will produce less (shot) noise than ISO 100 because you're increasing exposure. In most modern sensors, using ISO 50 is equivalent to using ISO 100 with a +1 exposure compensation (that's why Aristeas called it "pulling", a term borrowed from the old film days). In a nutshell: ISO 50 and 100 are usually interchangeable, provided that you are doing ETTR to maximise sensor saturation. I've added the "usually" because there are sensors that behave differently (e.g., on certain Panasonic cameras, see this thread where Bill Claff - the founder of Photons to Photos - digs into this topic). A final word on Photons to Photos data: don't read too much into small differences. Bill doesn't test all the cameras himself, he instead compiles data from volunteers that follow his protocol. Oppose The distorsions seem a bit extreme here, due to the low distance and wide angle. I don't mind the few insects in the sky, but there are visible chromatic aberrations on the battlements of the tower. The light does not seem very natural to me, as if the shadows had been lifted too much. Also the slightly shifted angle of view is less appealing than if the picture was taken in front. It is a camp, it is India’s oldest, this one in particular. They are known for rehabilitating orphaned elephants, you may know it from this recent Academy award-winning documentary. Support Yes, if one wanted to freeze the motion the shutter speed of 1/40 s was wrong. However we can also accept that the photographer wanted to show the trunk’s motion; and this is possible by showing it with motion blur. In addition the rather slow shutter speed has also lead to a nice display of the splashed water; with a faster shutter speed it would have been less pronounced. Support The light nicely emphasizes the three-dimensionality of the sculpture and makes it stand out from the background which is at most sides darker than the sculpture. The foliage is of uniform colour and offers a fairly uniform background. You could try to crop it a bit more (but not too much). Info Axillary wrasse (Symphodus mediterraneus), Arrábida National Park, Portugal. This species of wrasse is native to the eastern Atlantic Ocean from the Azores and Madeira to the coasts of Portugal to Morocco and then along the coastal waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Found in eelgrass beds at depths from 1 to 50 m (3.3 to 164.0 ft) it can reach 18 cm (7.1 in) in standard length, though most do not exceed 12 cm (4.7 in). This species is a food fish, game fish and can also be found in the aquarium trade. Axillary wrasses are oviparous, males are nest-makers and it feeds mainly on mollusks, gastropods, bivalves, tubicolous worms, chitons, sea urchins and bryozoans. Oppose The top crop cutting off the head is a bit unfortunate in my view. I also see no reason to include the blurry wooden frame in the composition. Additionally, the picture is oversharpened. Weird artifacts got in the hair at various places. @Basile Morin Fair enough! You know, over the years, FPC has established some fairly dogmatic views on certain things that are just not in line with (and sometimes the complete opposite of) what is considered reasonable in certain genres of photography. That's at least in part the legacy of the old days. People around here were mostly concerned about taking useful photos for Wikipedia. Without much prior exposure to photography, reviewers latched on to the common guidelines that separate the beginner photographer from the snapshot-taking tourist. But guidelines were mistaken as rules, turned into gospel and applied without considering whether they actually apply to the image in question ("verticals must be parallel" is my personal favourite). It's slowly gotten better recently, but on occasion we still struggle with this legacy. Maybe I've grown a bit over-sensitive to that. Maybe I was the one missing the point: I took your comment as you falling for the old and very misconceived "never cut into people's heads" dogma. Apologies for that!
I see the composition as a very pleasing, roughly golden ratio based one (eyes around the top right intersection, mouth around the bottom right one). If that doesn't resonate with you, that is absolutely 100% fine and gives me something to think about. I'd prefer a good discourse over a boring rule-of-the-fifth-day-nomination any day. No worry, I would be very happy to debate too, in my mother tongue, for all the subtleties of the language and the cultural references.
In Europe, the educational system is different from that of the United States, thus the adjective 101 for example is not immediately obvious.
"Sterile" is a word I would not have chosen if the head had been uncut in that case. "Conventional", perhaps?
Show me a rabbit, a duck, or a bear with the top of the head missing, I would probably find the crop similarly unfortunate :-) Because a "whole" is precious in animals (including humans).
Agreed about "dogmas" (to avoid). Each case is particular. However, conventions are powerful too. Even adoptable sometimes :-)
Oppose In defense the the photographer, cutting the top of the head is not "unfortunate" but done with intention to achieve a more intimate, less sterile composition. That's portrait photography 101, complaining about this is like complaining about the lack of feet in an upper body portrait: missing the point. Info The genus Strigilla was introduced by TURTON, 1882 (Conchylia insularum britannicarum, page XVI), and was defined as "shell with angular striae in opposite directions". Normally all ribs or striae have a similar direction, here it changes in a very noticeable way. If you look at the left valve, on the left side the striae are horizontal and slightly curved, then there is an almost smooth area at the top, followed by striae running from top left to bottom right, then another fairly smooth area and all the way to the right again striae at a different angle than in the middle of the valve (and vice versa on the right valve). The crop could be slightly improved in my opinion, by placing the boat in the center, keeping the same ratio (to avoid an elongated aspect), however the resolution will be significantly lowered, and it's not possible to avoid the vertical format in this case. The lack of sharpness and noise start to be noticeable at low size, here. The nomination is also poorly categorized with no description in English (and a superficial one in Portuguese). Strong oppose Usually I can understand why someone nominated an image, even if it obviously won't succeed. But in this case I am scratching my head. The lines in this image scream for horizontal orientation, as with any other picture of a sunset over the ocean from the beach. And even if it were done that way, an uninteresting boat on an uninteresting sea underneath a very pedestrian sunset (as I've said, if you nominate a picture of a sunset here, it better be one that makes most of us feel like we've never seen a sunset before, and this ... well, it's the kind of sunset that makes me wonder if there are ever going to be any more good ones) is just not going to get off the beach, so to speak. Support These animals are very fascinating: after the breed was almost exterminated, only a few specimens were found for a rescue program in various zoos, with which new bison were released into the reserve after successful breeding in the early 1950s. The current population of about 1000 animals on the Polish and Belarusian side goes back to these last zoo animals. This image is the result of combining different stacking processes in the editing program. @Charlesjsharp: I use Helicon Focus, and for this image two different merging methods were used combined – B: depth map, and C: pyramid. Usually people come out of the forest and go towards that rocks on right bottom of the photo, thats popular place to take pictures, in winter by foot when lake is frozen, summers on boats. It's a colonial sea squirt common in the British Islands and that can be found from Norway along European coasts south to the Mediterranean. A single sea squirt can grow up to 2 centimetres (0.79 in) and they can be found to a depth of up to 50 metres (160 ft). Support A fresh view of a frequently-photographed subject ... always a delight, and multiply so when done this well. How do I know? I thought on first glance it was a different city. I love the way the contrails accentuate the ascending curve of the skyline. I love the way the pancake ice in the Hudson adds some visual interest in the lower part of the image without being a distraction. I love the winter sky. All around superb!

There is a single branched tentacle over each of its eyes. It's very territorial and their territories are centred around a crevice in the rocky reef which the fish uses for shelter. They occur in shallow seas at depths of 3–32 metres (9.8–105.0 ft). It has sharp, comb-like teeth which they use to scrape food from the substrate. They feed on sea anemones[ and on other invertebrates such as prawns and other crustaceans. The "orange and teal" look has been a bit of a color grading fad in the world of cinematography, partially because it is a pair of complementary colors that works well with human skin tones of all sorts. In principle, that seems to be a reasonable choice for a still shot of a bronze sculpture at golden hour with clear sky. Thanks for your review. We share the same opinion here. The state of conservation is generally excellent, considering the age of the document. We could handle a restoration using Photoshop, but in this case I don't want to falsify original details, given that a graphic work of art always contains imperfections due to the limitation of manual skills, the materials, the textures, etc. Yes, the paper is lined, and there are authentic inscriptions written at the bottom. Maybe a trace of brown pad over "l'an 2"? At full resolution a few spots are darker and lighter, but they don't look like scratches, so perhaps not to be removed. Even the turquoise tiny spots on the upper lip and under the eye, although obviously unwanted, may be aged 229 years. There is also a dark mark over the hand, which looks like a superficial horizontal folding line, and another one even less visible above. But the paper doesn't seem folded, thus I wonder if these marks could be preliminary lines of construction by the artist (insufficiently covered by the wash above), or an irregularity of the original paper, or something else of historical significance. The physical work is missing, thus as long as we don't know the origin of these peculiarities, I would find the enterprise of arranging the drawing to make it potentially superior to what it probably was in 1794 quite perilous. Oh, yes. The original scan very obviously is. File:Amanda Berry Smith by T. B. Latchmore - Original.tif The photograph is pasted to the mount. The paper colour of the mount is just what they chose, it doesn't indicate anything about the photo colours. Sepia was pretty much the method of stabilising photographic prints of this period; most of the stuff that wasn't sepia'd won't have lasted. @Ikan Kekek and Charlesjsharp: It's probably not reversible as the negatives probably no longer exist, but I don't think cabinet cards - which this was - have the same dimensions as a negative. So it's probably one of those things where they took the photo, they wanted reproductions to hand out, the ratio's fixed for that and pretty narrow horizontally vs. the tall verticals, so... crop crop, here you go. Early photography had some odd constraints, especially when it came to how images got mass produced as opposed to just, y'know, framed as a photo. I checked two glass negatives, and both were a ratio of 4:5, and this cabinet card is almost exactly 2:3 Adam Cuerden (talk) 23:16, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Possibly, though I've seen weirder things in old photos - often get the same photo in a half-dozen different forms - oval cropped, a wide crop, a narrow crop, a stereoscopic square crop. Also, I'm not sure if cutting things off on the side was looked down on as much back then. (Also, consider [1] and [2] - clearly the same photo, but the second is far better cropped. Maybe they were just sloppy back then? Kinda rare to see a carte-de-visite or cabinet card with two people in it that I'd be entirely happy with the crop of, anyway. Comment I have the impression that the face of the statue has a very smooth surface, so that we cannot see much texture/structure/whatever. This would mean that the photo is actually as sharp as it gets. If that's the case, I suggest you add your image to an applicable article sub-section ('Breeding and lifespan', perhaps). Support I saw photographs on exhibit at a very crowded opening in a gallery on Thursday, and I think this is better than some of the works I saw. It has a satisfying form to me, good light and contrast, and the parked cars (which aren't that obtrusive, and one is arguably helpfully parked approximately in front of the middle of the building's facade), bicycle and person are part of the urban scene. The ornate wrasse occurs in on rocky areas where there are growths of algae and sea grass beds. They are all female in their early life phase and the bigger ones (applies to all exemplars longer than 9-12 centimetres -3.5 to 4.7 in-) transform in males, reaching a maximal length of 12 centimetres (4.7 in). Ornate wrasses can be found at depths from 0 to 50 metres (0 to 164 ft). heartbroken oppose ugh, I'm really torn here. This is without doubt one of the most pleasing shots I've seen here for a while, but 2.6 Mpx from a 36 Mpx sensor dos not really align well with our "best of the best" approach. But let's not get hung up on numbers. What matter is what it does to the image, and that's where I disagree with Aristeas above: There is a lot of fine detail in this scene and I think the image currently doesn't really do that justice when viewed as a whole image at screen size. Zoomed in to 1:1, it looks quite mushy despite all the downscaling. That lens on that camera under that kind of light should be capable of so much more, and with some clever processing before the downscaling I think it should be possible to produce a super crisp image ... or am I missing something here? --El Grafo (talk) 08:11, 24 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Comment Well, I would not call the picture mushy, not even at 1:1. The brush-like structure of the incense bundles poses the risk that sharpening very quickly leads to zigzag structures and an artificial impression. Strong oppose Usually I can understand why someone nominated an image, even if it obviously won't succeed. But in this case I am scratching my head. The lines in this image scream for horizontal orientation, as with any other picture of a sunset over the ocean from the beach. And even if it were done that way, an uninteresting boat on an uninteresting sea underneath a very pedestrian sunset (as I've said, if you nominate a picture of a sunset here, it better be one that makes most of us feel like we've never seen a sunset before, and this ... well, it's the kind of sunset that makes me wonder if there are ever going to be any more good ones) is just not going to get off the beach, so to speak.
