• Our next virtual meeting will take place on Saturday, August 27. At this point we have two presentations lined up:

• The aperture and its (less known) effects (XRay)

•  Comment @Charlesjsharp Actually, it is an interesting question about proper scope for hot air balloons. I see the following two reasons to have valued images for every balloon:
  • We have scope for particular house and particular ship. Even for front view or side view of a house or a ship. But there are not too many balloons nowadays. I do not have exact statistical figures, but I think there are more houses and more ships than hot air balloons. And checking the categories for ships, houses and hot air balloons we can easily find that in Wikimedia Commons we have significantly less images of hot air balloons than images of buildings or images of ships. Like ships and houses, most of hot air balloons are unique, and most of the others are produced in very small series. For example, this is the valued image of serial ship

  • In our category tree for hot air balloons the next step after the particular balloon is usually something like Hot air balloons of the United Kingdom. Are we ready to check all the subcategories of such wide category to choose the best photo of a balloon from UK for example? I don't think so. But it means that there is no chance to have valued image of hot air balloon at all.

Question from the CPUG Board

Dear user group member,

I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.

With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.

That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.

However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:

This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

Your comment in QI nominations

Hi, Dear Alexey;

Thank you for your recent comment on File:Voria Ghafouri in 2023.jpg in Commons:Quality images candidates/candidate list#July 27, 2023 and I want to ask you if the problem you mentioned about the image not being sharp can be fixed or not? If you don't see the problem of the image in the basic principles, take a look at these two new versions of the image (1 and 2) to be uploaded in the commons; And I will be glad if you also participate in improving the quality of the image and uploading the new version :) Maometto97 (talk) 09:33, 28 July 2023 (UTC)

I have checked all the three versions of the photo, but I think, it is just impossible to improve any of them to QI status due to low level of detail and poor sharpness.

The timeline for the 2023 election will be

• September 15 – September 30: Applications for the election committee
• October 1 – October 9: Vote for election committee (ideally comprised of three members)
• October 10: Election committee starts work
• October 20 – November 9: Nomination phase for candidacies
• November 10 – December 10: Elections
• December 15: Results announced

In the first step we ask you to be part of the election committe. Please add your name on the Election Page.

STF lenses

Hi Lex, thank you very much for creating Category:Smooth Trans Focus (STF) lenses and adding this category to the respective lenses! There was just one small misunderstanding: The Fujinon XF56mm F1.2 R is not a STF lens, only the special variant Fujinon XF56mm F1.2 R APD (for the difference of both versions, see e.g. these tests: [2] and [3]). Therefore I have removed the STF category from the Category:Fujinon XF56mm F1.2 R. It’s a pity but it seems that on Commons we have not a single photo of the APD variant (Fujinon XF56mm F1.2 R APD) nor a single photo which has been taken with it ... Ah, I have found some free photos of/with the Fujinon XF56mm F1.2 R APD lens on Flickr! That’s nice. I will transfer some of them to Commons, so we can also show the APD lens. Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you

Dear fellow Commons photographer,

I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.

At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.
