Missing correct permission

Many maps come from the "atlas of conflict" website. It seems that an authorisation was sent to OTRS in July 2007 (ticket #2007071110003905) but also that it was not enough. Could a bot apply {{subst:npd}} on those images ? Thanks. --Pethrus (talk) 17:06, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

I download the dump from 2010-03-19 and seach all images there and I will mark them semiautomatic. Probably tonight. --Schlurcher (talk) 18:15, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

Transfer of images from dermnet

Resolved

We recently received permission to use all the images at dermnet on the commons. An OTRS ticket number has been assigned (#4599300), and template created for use with all these photos. With that being said, is there someone who can set up an automatic way to transfer the >23000 images from dermnet into Category:Cutaneous conditions? Thanks in advance! ---Kilbad (talk) 00:35, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

I've noticed several of these images already on Commons (though still marked as "waiting for OTRS"). Checking duplicates on Commons already while/before uploading might be important. They may be in use on several articles, have expanded translated descriptions and better categorised (or the exact oppisite, either is possible). See here all pages on Commons linking to that domain (900+). –Krinkletalk 00:50, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
PS: I read on his website they higher resolutions (instead 720x480) can be aquired. Just in case: has there been contact about that aswell, or is the permission/plan to upload the 480x720 ones from the website ? –Krinkletalk 00:55, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
Good questions... give me some time to follow-up on those issues. ---Kilbad (talk) 02:08, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
Yes I ve uploaded allot of images already, the descriptions are all links to the articles on English Wikipedia about the disease or conditions show in the picture, and the OTRS pending templates are being replaced. about the higher quality pictures, the author only allowed the use of images with the quality that is already published on his site MaenK.A.Talk 09:56, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
You might want to create a page at Commons:Batch uploading, the usual place for such requests. -- User:Docu at 10:01, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

Yorck project

Among the files using {{Painting}}, there are many from the Yorck project that could be converted to use multilingual templates, e.g. for File:Christian Krohg 001.jpg: {{Oil on canvas}}, {{size|cm|55|49}}, etc. -- User:Docu at 16:18, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

Investigating this one now. If all goes well, will run it tonight. -- Krinkletalk 11:47, 15 March 2010 (UTC)
I've created a page here: User:KrinkleBot/Yorck-Painting to get some insight into all of this, feel free to edit there. -- Krinkletalk 12:15, 15 March 2010 (UTC)
Looks good. To get an overview of possible values in the fields, you might want to have a look at http://toolserver.org/~kolossos/templatetiger/tt-table4.php?template=Painting&lang=commonswiki&where=Source&is=Yorck (May 2009 data) -- User:Docu at 12:38, 15 March 2010 (UTC)
Another thing if it can be fixed is to move creator templates from after {{Information}} template to the artist field of the {{Painting}}. --Jarekt (talk) 13:57, 15 March 2010 (UTC)
@Docu: Yeah, I got the link from your post below, nice tool.
@Jarekt: OK, I've putted it in the Example-case, will see how we're actually gonna do it, but it's now included in the "ideal case". -- Krinkletalk 14:37, 15 March 2010 (UTC)
Do you have any ideas what to do with the Country-parameter ? It's still present a lot but is not used in the template. So anything we do with it can only be an improvement as it is currenty ignored. --Krinkletalk 00:00, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
From Template_talk:Painting#Country I take it that it hasn't been used since 2006 and it can be removed. -- User:Docu at 05:56, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

About the techniques. I see some have their own multilingual template (see Painting/techniques). But all other variations are done by the {{Technique}}-template. How about using only Template:Technique ? (I mean, for the transformation from for "plain-text" to a template (such as {{de| Öl auf Leinwand}}). I'll leave any {{Oil on canvas}} the way they are, unless there is a consensus to totally transform to Template:Technique. –Krinkletalk 15:41, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

I tend to agree with you, but according to Template:Painting#Brief_syntax_description, priority should be given to tags in Category:Multilingual_tags:_Techniques. Besides that, the field itself is already called "technique". With some changes to the template, "|technique=Oil on canvas" could be sufficient, but this would probably be too simple. -- User:Docu at 03:08, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

Change Checkusage to Globalusage

Could someone change the current links to CheckUsage to internal links to Special:GlobalUsage. The CheckUsage is deprecated since some months, because the new feature is already on the page and it doesn't rely on the Toolserver. Most importantly, the links in the template namespace, on project and help pages should be changed, the rest can probably be left as is. Thanks for your help, --The Evil IP address (talk) 19:07, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, I'm working on it at the moment. Starting off in the Template-namespace. –Krinkletalk 20:47, 3 April 2010 (UTC)
Done most of the templates now. Since the default MediaWiki Special:LinkSearch shows all Files etc. aswell, I wrote a simple script that interacts with the API to filter in namespaces + search both links to CheckUsage on toolserver.org ánd on tools.wikimedia.de (there were/are lots of links to the old address too). See Link2CheckUsage.php?namespace=10&limit=100 for what's left in the Template-namespace and Link2CheckUsage.php for a general overview of what's left. –Krinkletalk 23:49, 3 April 2010 (UTC)
As it's now in the interface, we might want to remove some of the uses. -- User:Docu at 03:17, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

Grave sculptures category

In the Category:Grave sculptures are all the categories "Grave sculptures in X", X being a country name, along with the categories "Grave sculptures of Y", Y being the subject of the sculpture (hourglasses, animals, ...). We probably should create the category "Grace sculptures by country" and moves all the country-related subcategories in it. --Pethrus (talk) 16:13, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

The subcategories could be moved by bot easily, but you might want to discuss it with Verica Atrebatum first. They seem to have created most subcategories. -- User:Docu at 06:34, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

Substitute parserfunction output Flickr upload bot

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is important enough for a mass bot run, but I'll report it in case it is. Untill late 2009 the Flickr upload bot used to spit out half Parser Functions into the Information-template. For example here. Though I (obviously) haven't checked every upload so far I believe it affects all uploads from Flickr upload bot before "18:50, 26 October 2009 (UTC)" (first one without it last one with it).

See here for the contributionlist of the change. The request is perform changes like this one automated.

After ( {{subst:#if ):

I'm not 100% sure if all of them have it, nor if the kind of output in parserfunctions is exactly the same everywhere, but from the dozens of random ones I picked between last one and from earlier months the above example seems representative and simply substituting seems to do the trick. -- Greetings, Krinkle (talk) 00:05, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

So, is this do-able ? The issue that caused all this has been resolved since October 26th, 2009. However all the older ones still contain that parsercode in them. It'd be great if it could be substituted by a bot. -- Krinkletalk 14:32, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Dates in BArch templates

According to a note from 16:01, 30 January 2010 (UTC) by Martin H. at Commons:Village_pump#Bundesarchiv_categorization [permanent link], the date is in many cases incorrect.

This could be fixed by retrieving the correct date, checking if the date currently in the template still matches the one at upload, and, if yes, update the date in the template. Dates fixed by users should probably not be overwritten. -- User:Docu at 20:13, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

Support. (an example of Bundesarchiv date problems). Teofilo (talk) 09:36, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
The difference there is a bit odd and might not be of the usual type:
I went through some 100 files I had categorized by year. There were 5 files where the date in the information template of the image was, let's say, "1901" instead of "1901/1910" (at their website/in the image itself). -- User:Docu at 17:49, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
The metadata we got from the Bundesarchiv should be somewhere at the toolserver. Either this metadata is incorrect or either it was wronly parsed. I think we should look into this. If it's the first case it could easily be updated without affecting user edits. Multichill (talk) 00:13, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
Sounds good. If we bear in mind that the dates here and there can have changed since (sample), it should be ok. -- User:Docu at 00:26, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

Updating LoC images with the LoC template

Many images on Commons that have the LoC as its source do not have the LoC template.. As I wrote on my blog the consequence is that we do not know how much traffic LoC images generate ... It would be really helpful if the LoC images all use the template. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 19:45, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

An example of an image WITH a template ... http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pocahontas_original.jpg Thanks, GerardM (talk) 20:05, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
See Category:LOC picture without template for a started maintenance project targeting this. I doubt that this is bot work, the sourcing on Commons s inconsistent, some files without template have only a wording saying "Library of Congress" or a link to the LoC search with session id that is not longer working. Furthermore the digital id is not longer used at the archival descriptions of the LoC-items http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/2006691548/ but hidden at the subpage http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/2006691548/resource/cph.3a10723/. --Martin H. (talk) 02:01, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
It should be possible to make a bot add Category:LOC picture without template to images with a specified text and without a relevant template. If we end up with 100 it should probably be done manually but if we end with 100,000 it would be nice to have a bot to assist adding the right template. --MGA73 (talk) 13:32, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

Interwiki linking

I have noticed that some articles and categories on Commons have interwiki links to corresponding articles and categories on various editions of Wikipedia (e.g., Brunei, Category:Churches in France). I think that this type of interlinking is beneficial to users and editors of Commons and Wikipedia projects alike, since it allows easier navigation between text content and free media on a particular subject (especially since it is standard practice on many editions of Wikipedia to link to Commons; for example, the templates 'Commons' and 'Commons category' are transcluded a total of more than 380,000 times on the English Wikipedia).

Therefore, I think it would be extremely useful to have a bot which could:

  1. Identify articles (galleries, Multichill (talk) 17:48, 17 April 2010 (UTC)) on Commons which have counterparts on one or more Wikipedia projects, and add interwiki links to the articles on those Wikipedia projects; and
  2. Identify categories on Commons which have counterparts on one or more Wikipedia projects, and add interwiki links to the categories on those Wikipedia projects.

This request was made at least once before (in 2008, see here) and I know that some interwiki bots currently operate on Commons (e.g., User:Emijrpbot), but interwiki linking on Commons is far less prolific and regular as on Wikipedia projects. Black Falcon (talk) 02:30, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

I think it is a great idea to improve interwiki links. Unfortunately I personally do not know how so all I can offer is moral support. --Jarekt (talk) 03:04, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
Empir..bot does some of the above. The main thing that is missing are interwikis from Commons categories to the corresponding WP articles as each WP article will eventually have a category on Commons. (BTW: there is no such thing as an article on Commons). -- User:Docu at 03:22, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
Shouldn't Commons categories link to WP categories and Commons galleries (thanks, by the way, to you and Multichill ... I was wondering what the correct name was) to WP articles? Thanks, Black Falcon (talk) 20:17, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
Why should that be so? Commons:Database_reports/Page_count_by_namespace can give an overview of proportions. -- User:Docu at 21:57, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
Good question Black Falcon. We should first decide on what logic to use with interwiki links at Commons. When we have that set up, it's easy to run a bot (I think I already have it semi-implemented it in commonscat.py). So what should the logic be? Example:
  1. If a category exists in some language wikipedia, link to it
  2. If no category exists, but there is an article, link to it
  3. Else, don't add anything
This means that category interwiki's and article interwiki's will be mixed. Feel free to suggest better logic! ;-) Multichill (talk) 18:27, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
A safer solution might be to link with en.Wiki and than copy its interwiki links, this would prevent links like category:Dom with polish pl:dom. Also excluding wikipedia disambiguation pages would prevent linking category:Dom with english en:dom. May be allow linking with other wikipedias only for people names. Also I personally would prefer to first try linking with articles and than with categories not the other way around, but that might be a minority opinion. Can your bot also link articles/categories on those wikipedias to Commons? Either way I think this is a great idea, long overdue. --Jarekt (talk) 18:49, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
  • I tend agree with Jarekt about what to link from categories. I vaguely recall that seems to have been the preference last time it was discussed at VP. -- User:Docu at 12:29, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Probably easiest to start with the galleries. Galleries should probably always link to an article on Wikipedia. Bot should work like this:
  1. Generate a list of Commons galleries which have an article with the same name on some wikipedia (i'm running this now, see here, about 50k items, so about 1/3)
  2. Loop over the list
  3. Do some checking (disambiguation, redirects, that sort of thing)
  4. Copy all the interwikilinks from the wikipedia article
Have fun. Multichill (talk) 17:48, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
  • If that could be made to work, a simple solution would be to add {{#ifexist:en:{{PAGENAME}}|[[en:{{PAGENAME}}]]}} to an interface messages that appears on category pages. Alternatively, we could just add an en_link all category pages. With all the redirects, it's likely that it will find a reasonable match at en_wiki. -- User:Docu at 12:29, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Fixing OTRS tickets

There are currently several files in Category:Items missing OTRS ticket ID because the OTRS ticket is included as {{OTRS|id=11234567890}} instead of {{OTRS|11234567890}}. Could some bot operator check these files and remove “id=” where contained? --Leyo 20:25, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

Clean up the mess by User:ARTEST4ECHO

I am not sure if a bot is able to do the task, but I’ll try: User:ARTEST4ECHO has removed a large number of pages/categories from Category:People by name by some mistaken idea that their categorization under Category:Men by given name somehow supersedes their membership in Category:People by name, so that it should be removed per COM:OVERCAT policy. He now says he is “done making the changes I wanted to and I really don't care about Category:People by name as that was never my objective”, so the task of cleaning up seems to be left to me…

Reverting all those removals manually would not be an enjoyable task, so I would like to ask the bot operators if it would be possible to revert those removals automatically. I guess the problematic edits could be found using Special:Contributions/ARTEST4ECHO where the summary contains “removed Category:People by name”.

Colour change in svg

On sv.wiki we have been discussing the possibility of harmonizing (and updating) the colour scheme used in the various Swedish (svg) coat of arms. The end result from these discussions would be a list of files to update and a list of strings to be replaced (e.g. fill:red, fill:#e60000, fill:#d21034 -> fill:#d40000 etc.). What I was wondering is if it would be possible to get a bot to do this. I.e. download file, do string replacements, upload file. Similar to the work done by Rotatebot for {{rotate|degree=90}}. Cheers /Lokal_Profil 22:18, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Sure, there's no reason that couldn't work. I already have a quick and dirty mass upload script written in Perl that I could fairly easily modify to do what you want. I can even add a preview step (using rsvg-view) to make sure replacement works. The tricky part would be coming up with the replacement rules that are sufficiently exhaustive to work on all applicable files, yet specific enough not to cause collateral damage.
The safest way would probably be a three-step process: use an XML parser to extract the styles, parse out the colors using some regexps (taking into account all the different ways they can be specified) and finally do something like collapse each color to the closest one in a given set (using an appropriate definition of color distance), possibly with some extra criteria on how close the original color needs to be. That still wouldn't work with funny stuff involving silly transparency tricks, embedded images etc., but it should handle most simple cases. Of course, if the original files are in fact already regular enough that a simple set of string replacements would do the job, then the whole thing would be much simpler. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 14:39, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. Since the files all depict coat of arms there are only 8 colours ever used (the few exceptions could easily be identified beforehand). Also the majority of the images will have been created by one of three users each using their previous colour scheme so even the number of replacements should be quite limited. Still if it's possible to parse the files and extract all the colours used (should be identifiable through fill:COLOUR and stroke:COLOUR) then I could easily reduce that to an exhaustive "replace x by y" list (once again it should be possible to avoid collateral damage by fill: or stroke:). /Lokal_Profil 13:40, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

A bot to add " made with Inkscape" on my svg drawings

Hi. Please, if somebody can make a bot to specify in each of my svg files that it is made by Inkscape, I would thank him very much. A user asked me with what tool I was drawing svg files, and I realized that I omitted to write it, since the beginning. That mean all files .svg from User:Barbetorte should specify they are {{Inkscape}} in the description area. If it too complicate, just tell me. Tag a whole category with "no permission since"

Hello,

Could a bot help me tag all the paintings by contemporary artist Category:Reginald Gray with {{No permission since}}. This is a huge work and I would prefer a bot to do it rather than do it manually. The uploader is probably the painter himself, but if we don't add a little pressure or eventually delete the pictures, he probably won't bother to send a permission E-mail.

Births and deaths by months and years

Hello, could any bot create categories of births and deaths by months and years, e.g. Category:January 1988 births, Category:March 2010 deaths. I'd like change {{Creator}} template to automatically categorize to these lower categories. Categories contains only template {{Monthbyyeardeaths|197|6|2}} (for February 1976 deaths) or {{Monthbyyearbirths|188|8|5}} (for May 1888 births). Bot created catetegories would be great from 18th century to 2000 for births and from 18th century to date for deaths.--Sevela.p 08:56, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

If you want to want to re-organization births/deaths by year, please open a discussion at Commons:Categories for discussion first. The general idea of the categories is to select categories about people of given time period more easily rather than make a category for birth dates. -- User:Docu at 09:06, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Births and deaths categories and creator pages

As most of you know most of the categories in category:People by name should have birth/death year categories (like Category:1990 deaths) but many do not. At some point I changed template:creator so it adds such categories automatically for all the categories in Category:Creator template home categories. This was discussed on several occasions here, here, here. I generally dislike auto-categorization and always saw this addition as a temporary measure, so I would like to add proper birth/death year categories to all the categories in Category:Creator template home categories which are lacking them and retire this autocategorization from template:creator. Unfortunately, I can not think of a way to easily do it by hand or using AutoWikiBrouser bot like user:JarektBot. Do any pywikipediabots have capabilities which might be useful for that task? Any other ideas how to tackle this?--Jarekt (talk) 20:13, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

You might want to try, e.g. {{move|1990 deaths|1990 deaths}} with SieBot, but I'm not sure it works. With the category script of pywikipediabot, you can add a category to all articles in a category and it skips it if the category is already added directly. -- User:Docu at 21:43, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Listing open deletion requests

Many deletion requests have been open for months but never been listed in the Archive pages, and many have received little or no feedback - maybe because they were never listed. For example, Commons:Deletion requests/File:KittyEmsley.jpg (links), Commons:Deletion requests/File:HernesTønnemannen.jpg (links), Commons:Deletion requests/File:Lolamidd.jpg (links). A bot that scans for these unlisted deletions and lists them in the current Archive page would be great. Wknight94 talk 16:48, 27 March 2010 (UTC)

And maybe add section headings to ones that don't have them. That's probably less important though. If they get listed, at least people will see them. Wknight94 talk 16:52, 27 March 2010 (UTC)
I can only double that. I have no idea of the technical aspects, but maybe it would be possible to categorize {{Delete}} by day and then a bot always adds the missing DRs to the log page. That would be real awesome, because it's annoying, for both admins and users, if a DR isn't noticed by anyone. --The Evil IP address (talk) 19:45, 27 March 2010 (UTC)
Anyone? I am not comfortable closing DR's where neither the uploader nor the community in general have been notified. Wknight94 talk 12:33, 9 May 2010 (UTC)
Since today my bot lists deletions request from commons to portals on dewiki. So my bot database has a list of all files and the corresponding talk subpage. Thats why a made this request today. e.g. listing all files where the here-Link point to a non existing page would by a very simply task for me. (53 hits at the moment)
Because am not very active on commons, can you give me some more hints how i can detect all inactive subpages? According to the doc i think a list should contain all files linking to non existing subpages, subpages containing the delh-template, file page not linked on the subpage or subpages not embedded on a site linked from Commons:Deletion requests/Current requests or Commons:Deletion requests/Older discussions. Is that right?
On dewiki my bot already creates this list. Merlissimo (talk) 18:54, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
Mmh - no reply. So should i close the request then because of inactive requesters? Merlissimo (talk) 17:19, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
Sorry. I think we may be talking about slightly different things. If you look at the steps in Template:Delete, I think you are talking about #1, while I am talking about #2. The subpage is being created - it just is not being listed in the logs where the rest of the community sees it. A good example is this links here page where you see that the subpage has been transcluded into Commons:Deletion requests/2010/04/09. That is what we want. A bad example is this links here page where you see the DR subpage has not been transcluded anywhere - so it has probably never been seen by anyone. Wknight94 talk 13:47, 20 June 2010 (UTC)
But thats would meet the last criteria i wrote: Your good example is transculed/embedded in a page (Commons:Deletion requests/2010/04) linked from Commons:Deletion requests/Older discussions - your bad example not. I was talking about a list containing misstakes #1 AND #2.
Were should i put such a list? Merlissimo (talk) 17:44, 20 June 2010 (UTC)
I created Commons:Deletion requests/incomplete. Does this help? Merlissimo (talk) 05:04, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
I ordered the list by date in category title. Merlissimo (talk) 14:30, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
Ah yes, that's brilliant! That is exactly what I am looking for - and more. I didn't know there were that many! We can't list those all in one day's log. Maybe we could list 20 or so per day until the backlog is under control. Wknight94 talk 14:38, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

{{Oil on canvas}} is a redirect, to oil on canvas
medium QS:P186,Q296955;P186,Q12321255,P518,Q861259
, I thought it was more logical to have go directly to the main template. Actually, we can also see thins otherwise : {{technique|oil|canvas}}, provides an automatic translation, so if it happens that for some languages the translation of oil on canvas follows an unexpected pattern, {{Oil on canvas}} would allow more flexibility. But, if this problem arises, we can probably invert the redirect so that we don't get any problem.

Changing the descriptions of every file in Category:Minerals of Mogok

DustyBot replacement for en:WP:FPC

Crosslinked at en:Wikipedia:Bot_requests#DustyBot_replacement_for_WP:FPC

DustyBot formerly did the important job of keeping English Wikipedia Featured Pictures noted as such on Commons. I'd like to request a bot to do the following, in order to replace it:

Main tasks

1. [Once a week to once a month] Go through all images in en:Category:Featured pictures, and, if the images are on Commons as well, mark them with {{Assessments|enwiki=1}}, if no Assessments tag exists already; otherwise, add the enwiki=1 parameter to the existing Assessments tag.

2. [Once a week to once a month] Go through all files in en:Category:Featured sounds, same as above, only use enwiki=3 instead.

Optional extras [Only do these if not too much trouble]:

A. [Once a day] Attempt to keep up with new FPs, with a daily check of the archives for the current month and [if near the start of a month] the previous. These archives are always of the form en:Wikipedia:Featured_picture_candidates/July-2010. They contain transcluded nominations; those that are promoted will almost always contain the exact text: {{FPCresult|Promoted|File:FILENAME.EXT}} - e.g. {{FPCresult|Promoted|File:Ardea modesta.jpg}} would tell you that File:Ardea modesta.jpg had been promoted. If the text is not that exact text, it may safely be ignored until the next run of bot function 1. Featured sounds are a much slower process (as well as lacking a standardised closing), and so can likely be skipped for this.

B. [En-wiki only; Once a month] Check featured pictures appear in articles, leave a note on WT:FPC if there are any that miss this requirement.

C. [En-wiki only; Once a month] Collate Featured pictures thumbs, the Featured picture pages, and Category:Featured pictures; leave a note (on WT:FPC) if any appear in one or two of them, but not all three. This would indicate a mistake was made in closing or delisting, and should be dealt with manually.

This would be extremely helpful to documenting the English Wikipedia featured media projects. Adam Cuerden (talk) 03:08, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

' age pyramid WarXboT|80

I've fixed a diagram by only removing the font-family:... Sample: There are many diagrams in this category to be fix. Maybe remove the font-family complete? Regards --Perhelion (talk) 21:50, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Another better (maybe) hint from german here (the combination of size and font-family maybe) --Perhelion (talk) 22:18, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
There is no fault regonizable near identical (header) diagrams have different results. Another example, I've optimzed the code and leave the complete font-family: File:USA_Clark_County,_Kansas_age_pyramid.svg --Perhelion (talk) 23:10, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
I have a bot framework, which can manipulate SVGs & reupload them. Could you provide the exact changes you did? I won't be able to run it before friday (?), because I don't have access to my main pc now. --DieBuche (talk) 11:44, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
He made a lot of minor changes, but he did not know what he did. All these files (could be more than 3000 for all the counties in the USA) contain this line:
.text {fill:#000000;font-size:30px;font-family:'Courier,Helvetica,Times,Arial';text-anchor:middle;}

It should be changed to :

.text {fill:#000000;font-size:30px;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed';text-anchor:middle;}

I have done this by Hand on File:USA Atchison County, Kansas age pyramid.svg and it worked fine. Uwe Dedering (talk) 16:00, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Danke. I'll start friday then unless someone else is quicker--DieBuche (talk) 17:09, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
The fault is that font-family:'Courier,Helvetica,...' is in quotation marks. That is in CSS only for single font allowed. (Courier looks not so good) Danke auch. --77.179.242.109 17:35, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Maybe an url can be built with Special:Undelete so you'd have to select "open all links" just a few times.  Docu  at 09:37, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
As far as I know it is a standard feature in pywikipedia. We just need a list of files to restore. And perhaps a reason why for the summary + to make sure it seems ok to restore :-) --MGA73 (talk) 10:40, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
Sweet! Thanks, didn't figure it would be part of delete.py. If anyone else needs it: 1. Define your admin account like

2. use the delete module
python delete.py -file=list.txt -undelete -summary:"OTRS received"

Could someone please sort my uploads into a category "Photographs by Mbdortmund"?

Thx! --Mbdortmund (talk) 10:49, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

It looks like there are too many to do it with CC (7500+).
If it's done, you might need to double-check the result and move/remove some images (e.g. images of other authors you uploaded or images where you just revert someone else) or add other images (e.g. images reuploaded by rotatebot).  Docu  at 11:25, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Thx for the hint, I know that there are a lot of pictures only retouched by me, I will correct that. --Mbdortmund (talk) 11:40, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Maybe Special:WhatLinksHere/User:Mbdortmund in Filenamespace gets good results. You could use the list tool in AWB to cross check. --  Docu  at 15:17, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
At first thx to MGA73, that' really helpful! Could you say how long the bot will work, at the moment it has marked about 2.838 files?
At docu: Is it possible to generate a request of some kind finding "What links here" minus "the files marked per Bot"?
Thx for your help --Mbdortmund (talk) 16:02, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
@ Mbdortmund. I found 8 thousand images so it should be done in a few hours. I plan to create a list of "What links here" in a few moments and I can make my bot work on these images also. It skips images allready in the category so you should wait with the cleanup untill the bot is finished... Otherwise it might add the images again :-) --MGA73 (talk) 17:06, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
Bot is now finished. Perhaps the bot could help you remove the category or to change it to "Images edited by Mbdortmund" by editing all images that does NOT contain a specified text like "Mathias Bigge" or "M. Bigge" or "User:Mbdortmund". However that would also remove images uploaded by you as PD-old etc. --MGA73 (talk) 18:30, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
Yes, with the AWB list module. Once search has updated, this should work too, just filter for media.  Docu  at 05:25, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Fetching missing description from captions used in articles

Category:Media lacking a description contains 55,000 files. Would it be possible to reduce the number by fetching image captions used in other wiki pages (mostly Wikipedia articles) and adding them to the file description page on Commons? --Leyo 17:22, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

This would make a lot of incorrect descriptions. For example, the first image in today's featured Wikipedia article, Confirmation Bias, is File:Handgun collection.JPG and its caption is "Strong opinions on an issue such as gun ownership can bias how someone interprets new evidence." While this perfectly relevant in the context of an article on confirmation bias, when used in the description of a picture of a handgun collection, it doesn't really make much sense. - EdoDodo talk 18:08, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
I am aware of this possible pitfall. In your example, the caption in Handgun would be perfect. Maybe it would be best to do this task in a semi-automated way. Or would adding a clearly visible note that the description was added by a bot enough? --Leyo 18:20, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
Indeed, but it's impossible for a bot to figure out which caption is appropriate and which one isn't. As for doing it in a semi-automated way... Yes, that would be possible, probably through a tool on Toolserver or something (you input an image or list of images, it fetches the captions used for them and you choose the most appropriate). I doubt a completely automated addition, even if clearly marked, would be acceptable. - EdoDodo talk 19:21, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
I think the initial series brought good results and this should be continued.
Current status from [9] is: Category:Media_lacking_a_description has 55553 images. Distinct images used: 15011 (27.02% of all images in category).  Docu  at 04:35, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
The semi-automated way is already possible (enable WhatIsThat in Pref>Gadgets), and the full automated way as well. see User:DieBucheBot/stats for details. Personally I would maybe wait a bit more before running it again, but if others do favour a repeat soon, I'll do that as well. --DieBuche (talk) 07:33, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
(EC) I added descriptions to the some of the most heavily used files found with glamorous (until File:Kazimiero-bazn-kryzius-64.png, where I have no idea). --Leyo 07:42, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

Search for fake OTRS tickets

This may be a stretch, but how about a bot that searches for fake OTRS tickets? It would have to search the history of files with OTRS tickets, and determine which account added the OTRS ticket, then see if that account is a valid OTRS user. Sounds easy, right?  ;) Wknight94 talk 17:20, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

For future edits, we could use the abuse filter to check for that. The devs would have to configure a new usergroup "OTRS" first, but the filter should be able to check that.  Docu  at 20:42, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
Note, though, that there are valid reasons for a non-OTRSer to add an OTRS tag: If uploading an edit of an OTRS-tagged file under a new filename, for example, or if the permission given explicitly included other files, which they decided not to upload until the first OTRS went through. Adam Cuerden (talk) 23:21, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
The filter extension can log, warn and/or block.  Docu  at 13:22, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

To test this, maybe the following could work:

!("OTRS-member" in user_groups)
&!("sysop" in user_groups)
&(action == 'edit')
&(article_namespace == 6)
&(lcase(added_lines) rlike "\{\{otrs|permissionotrs\|")

We might want to name it "test" until the user group is set up and we are sure it works. BTW there already is Special:AbuseFilter/50 we could eventually replace or update.  Docu  at 11:02, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Looks good. I guess your following he bug report, they haven't yet decided how to set up the group exactly--DieBuche (talk) 11:12, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
Sometimes users get the ticket and then use the template when uploading it. Should we flag this as well? And everyonce in a while I use my bot to add the same ticket to a lot of pages, should we maybe exlude users with bot flags?--DieBuche (talk) 11:14, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
I haven't much experience in filter syntax, so I started just with a sample that might work. I agree that both cases you mention should be included. This test could be used to find names we need to add to the usergroup eventually.  Docu  at 11:17, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
Shall we give this filter a try?  Docu  at 18:22, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
Sure, where do I add it? Obviously only logging for now--DieBuche (talk) 18:33, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

FlickreviewR clone

FlickreviewR is working very slowly at present, not entirely sure why. Bryan has been informed, but may take a while to sort it. However not withstanding the present situation, I think it would be beneficial to the project to have more than one bot that can do that role, with FlickreviewR malfunctioning the present queue is mushrooming rapidly.

Bryan has made the source freely available here (and presumably some of the other files there too). I don't think its the most recent version, but would it enable us to have a functional clone (or several)?--Nilfanion (talk) 11:16, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Do you have the resources to run that bot? I guess it could be speedily botflagged since it's running on already approve code--DieBuche (talk) 11:30, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
Otherwise I could run the bot, but due to the lack of a toolserver account only during day time--DieBuche (talk) 11:33, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
I don't personally have ability or resources to run such a bot at present. It may an idea to do so independently of the toolserver, as that means there is bot coverage if/when toolserver is down. Obviously minor tweaking to code would be required (so the new bot says it reviewed it and not the original...)--Nilfanion (talk) 11:39, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
Ok, I'll have a look at the source & see what needs to be adapted.--DieBuche (talk) 11:46, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
There is Magnus' bot that does the same (in a better way IMHO).  Docu  at 05:54, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
Actually no. Magnus' bot is an upload tool, whereas FlickreviewR checks uploads that were uploaded through Flickr. Magnus' bot doesn't deal with the core function as it cannot check if files such as Clannad influence.jpg are correctly licensed. FlickreviewR is fully functional again now, but it would still be helpful to have a backup existing.--Nilfanion (talk) 09:18, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
Sure, once it's uploaded, it's too late. But there are many ways to upload through the bot that can make it more convenient to use. For the sample you mention, FlickrreviewR would probably fail too.  Docu  at 09:49, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
The whole point of FlickreviewR is to check files uploaded by others. The use of upload bots is a superior way of uploading Flickr images (as there is never any doubt then), but there's no requirement to do so. FlickreviewR really should pass the image I mentioned.--Nilfanion (talk) 09:56, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
It was my understanding that some use FlickrreviewR to upload files, but I might confuse it with yet another bot.
BTW, with "would probably fail too" I meant that a manual review would probably reject the image because of the ad in the picture, not the license at Flickr. Bots fail, because they would pass the image.  Docu  at 10:01, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
I think there's two bots that do Flickr uploads at present, both mentioned on the upload form (with a caveat that they are unstable, which hardly encourages their use!). FlickreviewR is for everything else and is not an upload tool.
Agreed Poor example image there and is why we shouldn't totally rely on any bot for anything. Its preferable for a bot to check the license than a human, as that removes the chance of error. The fact humans can look at more than just "is the license correctly copied?" is ultimately a matter to handle through deletion requests (or speedies), as once the images have passed Flickr review they should be treated like any other freely licensed work on Commons and deleted if its an unacceptable derivative work. If the license is confirmed there's no reason to treat Flickr-sourced files any differently to ones from any other source. For instance, I think its likely there are unacceptable derivatives in the Geograph upload - only way to detect them is hard work :(--Nilfanion (talk) 10:13, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
Maybe we could re-write part of Flickr upload form to encourage users to use the bots that check and upload the files.  Docu  at 10:29, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
A draft is at MediaWiki_talk:Uploadtext/fromflickr#Update.  Docu  at 18:51, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
  •  Comment Uploading with a bot is the best solution and I support almost any way to persuade users to use a bot. But we still need a bot to check images uploaded "manually". The main purpose of the Flickrreview bot is to either mark files with a problem (so humans can have a look at them quick) or to verify that the license is ok in case the image should later be deleted on Flickr or if the license is changed. The bot also upload the largest resolution if the license is ok and only a small verion of the file is uploaded. So the bot does a lot of good stuff. It does not check if it is a copyvio or in otherways unwanted on Commons so we will always need humans to review files.
Normally when bot is down it is only for a few hours or a few days. As I understand it the problem last time was that some database on toolserver was down. A clone bot would not be of use unless it had a working database and if the operator was ready to start it. I do not think that we should create a clone but perhaps make the bot a multi-maintainer-bot would be good - if Bryan agrees ofcourse. That way more users could help maintain the bot and restart it if needed. Perhaps a backup of the database is a good idea - unless bot is rewritten so it does not need a database. --MGA73 (talk) 10:43, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

I am not opposed to running a clone, but I don't think it is necessary. Most of the problems arise when part of the toolserver is down; a situation that does not arise too often. Part of the problem I think is that the bot used to run only once every 6 hours. I have set this to 1 hour. -- Bryan (talk to me) 11:47, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Good idea. That keeps unreviewed files down to a minimum if server crashed. Also files are reviewed faster reducing the risk that license is changed before the file is reviewed. Also uploader might find out faster is source is missing or license is unfree. --MGA73 (talk) 11:00, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

replacing explicit cat specification by template that induces that cat

Hi, I created {{Created with Text Editor}} resp {{HandSVG}} which add a note to the description page and add to cat Category: Manually coded SVG. The entention is to make it clear to editors that there might be some additional information within a svg file itself, so it's similar to "created with inkscape" class templates. So the Job looks as follows:

for all files in "Category: Manually coded SVG":
if there is a "[[Category: Manually coded SVG]]" string in it:
      remove that string;
if there is not already a "{{Created with Text Editor}}" present:
         add it

The preferred place to insert the template is somewhere after {{Information}} (if that template is present) but before the rather lengthly license section. If no good place can be determined, just do an in-place replacement. Is that doable? --Georg-Johann (talk) 18:56, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Change date of all pictures in one category

Hi folks, my digital camera was misconfigures and now in one category all pictures have a wrong date: Category:250 years Battle of Warburg. The pictures are dated at 2010-08-31 but they were taken on 2010-07-31. I think, this is a job for a bot? Greetz from Germany. --DaBroMfld (talk) 19:51, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

Your misconfiguration of your camera will show up in the metadata, not necessarily in the file description you provided during upload. My bot is correcting the typo in the file description, but you will need to correct the metadata yourself and then reupload. I see some pictures with the metadata showing the time and date as 00:00 1 January 2000 as well. --O (висчвын) 00:47, 15 August 2010 (GMT)

The reason I am suggesting changing the metadata is because some random user might see one of your pictures and nominate it for deletion based on date and licensing discrepancies (i.e. CC-BY-SA-3.0 didn't exist in 2000). Not that anyone who understands this situation would ever nominate your picture(s) for deletion, but keep that in mind. --O (висчвын) 17:37, 15 August 2010 (GMT)

Make redirects from titles with correct Romanian diacritics to the currently used diacritics

We at ro.wp are currently in the process of changing the widely used, but incorrect Romanian diacritics (Ş,Ţ) with the correct, but somewhat less used versions (Ṣ,Ṭ). You can find more informations here and here. This creates serious problems for around 8% of the users, so we implemented some JS solutions for them. Unfortunately, the solution sometimes fails on the file names (does not recognize the file names in templates, when they do not contain the namespace).

As local redirects to commons files do not work, we would need redirects to be created form titles with correct diacritics to the currently uploaded files ( like File:Poșta din Ruginoasa.jpg -> File:Poşta din Ruginoasa.jpg). Based on the experience at en.wp, this would mean creating a list of all files containing Ş,Ţ (+lowercase), then working on that list.

I have a pywikipedia robot that does the replacement for a page list. Its code is available here. I was wondering if there was somebody with bot rights that was willing to run it (or make another robot that does the same thing)? Thanks.--Strainu (talk) 20:51, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

Tragedy of the Commonist

Greetings,

I've been using the Commonist for batch uploads of photos from Caesarea, then uploaded another batch of Tel Arad. Unfortunately, I forgot to update the categorization and date between those two batches. Thus I would like to ask for a bot to do the following corrections:

Finding possible problems with uploads from Geograph

Hello. I am looking for some help with finding images which were uploaded from Geograph which don't use the geograph template. More specifically, I'd like a list of any page which contains a link to geograph.org.uk (special:linksearch does this) which is in the file: namespace and which does not include template:geograph. Does anyone have a bot which could do this? The reason for wanting this is that these pages are probably missing information, and perhaps geolocation data, which exists on the original Geograph page. Update links of old PNG with new SVG

Is there a bot that updates the links of a PNG which has a SVG version available? --Mouagip (talk) 11:57, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

You mean you need it done for a single instance, or you would like a bot that does it automatically in all cases? Because if it is the second, then there may be some cases in which using a PNG version is preferable. - EdoDodo talk 12:09, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
I would like to have a bot for all cases. If a PNG is properly vectorized I can't imagine a case where the SVG is not preferable. Of course there are PNGs not suitable for vectorizing but for those you don't make a SVG in the first place. --Mouagip (talk) 12:28, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, the thing I was thinking of is fair use images, where a low-res version has to be used for copyright concerns. But I suppose if that was the case it wouldn't be vectorized in the first place, and it wouldn't be on Commons. - EdoDodo talk 12:31, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
You can use replacer.py (part of pywikipedia). That's the code used by user:CommonsDelinker. Multichill (talk) 16:40, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

CommonsDelinker used to have this capability ages ago but then it was decided that such capability would do more harm than good and was thus disabled indefinitely. --O (висчвын) 02:56, 16 August 2010 (GMT)

Several bots convert text to allow localizations. There are a few strings that don't seem to get converted. Please list them above. One or several bot operator might want to add them to their search/replace programs. -- User:Docu at 16:15, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

All already implemented in my bot. Feel free to suggest missing tasks direct on my bots page. I dont think here is the right platform. --Schlurcher (talk) 17:01, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
First I had listed them on User talk:Emijrp as his bot had already edited one of the pages and I think he scans the dumps for pages to fix. None of the three uploads were really recent.
I think it's an advantage if several bots can share the same list. Personally, I'd rather not fix one thing more than once manually. -- User:Docu at 17:10, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
  •  Comment: The Booland3 (and 4 probably too) should be orphaned, deleted and salted. They will always be reproduced by the upload bots as long as they exist. The bots simply put all templates from "Templates used on the page" on the file description page if they exist, even when they're only within a template, see for example {{!}}'s usage on file pages. The template is unused and if such a meta template is desired, then it should have a different name. Every meta template that's used on some wiki's file description page should be salted to prevent creation of those. --The Evil IP address (talk) 18:33, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
I informed the creator of these templates. He substituted them. --Leyo 15:34, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

  • If it could be possible to set (i18n) in the comment with localization, because it can be interpretated as geo-locating. Esby (talk) 20:38, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
  • I added "file description pages cleanup" to the section header (some are i18n, others are just cleanup). -- User:Docu at 09:36, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

{{int:license}} vs. {{int:license-header}}

I thought that wasn't being done, because all pages use {{int:license}} -- User:Docu at 16:17, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
Yes, that's because the bots added it before the correct heading actually existed. But it should use license-header, as license is for the "license" label on the upload form and those are not the same strings. --The Evil IP address (talk) 13:35, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
Well, it's there now. It seems easier to change the upload form instead. -- User:Docu at 14:24, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
I removed the use of {{int:license-header}} from the list above. The only bot that uses this is JarektBot and about 3 Million Images (about 2 Million edits from Empjirbot and 1 Million of my bot) use the other so why not change the single use of in the upload form, than to change all those images? --Schlurcher (talk) 16:03, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
Because this would mean a change in the core software, which the developers surely won't do because bots at Commons massively inserted the wrong system message on their file description pages. --The Evil IP address (talk) 16:43, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
There is a easy work around as I posted some time earlier, but no one was willing to insert it in the {{int:license}}, the following code does the trick (German version of int:license):
{{#ifeq:{{NAMESPACE}}|{{ns:6}}|Lizenz|Lizenz:}}
and I tested it myself on the testwiki works perfectly. --Schlurcher (talk) 16:48, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

I think I agree with The Evil IP address here {{int:license-header}} ("Licensing") should be preferred to {{int:license}} ("Licensing:"). I do not see it as a problem that most of the automatic replacements so far was to {{int:license-header}}. We also probably should not be hanging from {{int:license}} to {{int:license-header}}. But new changes of "License" headers should be to {{int:license-header}}. --Jarekt (talk) 18:05, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

I disagree. I simply can't belive that it is so difficult to change one single use of a system message in the upload form. To tolerate two standards will only increase the problem. Then it is even better to live with the colon than to creat such a mess. The mess was only created, because the bug notice was not addressed in a proper way. --Schlurcher (talk) 18:10, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
And there is a easy solution (posted 3 comments above) that will solve the whole problem and makes the use of two diffrent messages redundant. --Schlurcher (talk) 18:12, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
How many times are {{int:license}} and {{int:license-header}} currently being used in file namespace? -- User:Docu at 18:21, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
{{int:license}} - about 3 Million Times
{{int:license-header}} - about 1'000 Times (Dump 2010-03-19, 464 matches)
--Schlurcher (talk) 18:25, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
Let's apply the fix you suggested for MediaWiki:license then. Converting 1000 pages instead of 3 million (once again) seems easier. -- User:Docu at 18:30, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
So, Jarekt must stop his bot, right? emijrp (talk) 20:14, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
I do not have strong opinions on this subject and I will not run until this is resolved. --Jarekt (talk) 21:50, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
Do not forget to count those 149 language versions of MediaWiki:License-header. (Not that I would think this is a good idea at all. You should also realize that as soon as the initial problem gets fixed directly in MediaWiki, the upload process will create newly created file description pages with license-header, anyway.) --Mormegil (talk) 21:55, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
So, it seems the decision is already made. Let's update the clean-up.py and start running again ?

To change or not to change

As I already mentioned user:JarektBot is currently inspecting {{PD-Old}} files to see if a {{Creator}} template can be added. I also added many of the above replacement to that job. Sometimes bot changes dozen things in a file and sometimes only one, those only-one changes are often trivial: {{int:license}} -> {{int:license-header}} or remove {{ImageUpload}} templates. Judging by User_talk:JarektBot those trivial changes are controversial. I do not have strong feelings one way of the other. Any other opinions if my bot should be doing this kind of trivial replacements or just stick to the few most obvious ones? --Jarekt (talk) 15:38, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

If I exclude the int:license-header/int:license-question, I think all changes currently listed above make it worth editing a file description page, except maybe for the removal of {{ImageUpload}}. They do change a description when viewing a template in various language versions, e.g. for File:Yulong Xueshan 11.JPG (random sample from current SchlurcherBot changes):

[en] [de] [es] [fr] [it] [nl] [ja] [pl] [pt] [ru] [ca] [cs] [hu] [no] [fi] [sv] [uk] [zh] [ar] [id] [da] [eo] [he] [ko] [lt] [ro] [sk] [sr] [vi] [tr] [mk] [ms] [bg] [et] [el] [simple] [eu] [fa] [gl] [hr] [nn] [sl] [th]

Obviously, ideally a bot does all changes in one edit. BTW when using pywikipediabot, the removal of {{ImageUpload}} could be added into the "cosmetic changes"-module, this would make sure it's only being used if one of the other changes are being done. -- User:Docu at 15:55, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
I added a comment in the table entry about replacing {{Date}} with a normal dash-format. This is fine since the template around it is redundant in most cases. However if additional text is present in the Date-field, then replacement should not be done since that will break translation. 81.92.181.166 02:26, 8 May 2010 (UTC)
The word of caution applies to several other replacements too. To limit the risk, I added part of the following field for some. At least in one instance, Leyo removed it, probably for the sake of clarity. -- User:Docu at 04:54, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
To make the table easier to read, I'm moving the comment here:
NB: Cuation with this one, only replace with dash-format if it's the only content of the date-field. If other text is present the Date-template is required to maintain transtability since the "dash-detector" wont work then (ie. with texts like "original upload date"). 81.92.181.166 02:26, 8 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanks.  Docu  at 12:35, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Regex collection for bots

I started a page for localisation and general fix / cleanup regexes. I hope that other bot operators will add any useful ones they use or improve what's there. If you have any suggestions, let me know. I plan to add more in the future. Sorry, it's not python; I use AWB for these things, but once I add some more stuff and, I'll work on a commons-localization script (along with a XML file for AWB to load them all at once). Rocket000 (talk) 18:25, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

May I suggest to rename it in order to inaugurate an official page like w:Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos? JackPotte (talk) 12:09, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

template:technique

I've recently made similar requests to user:Schlurcher, but since the list is already quite long, I can't keep adding things on it forever, so I put my request here: Could a bot replace in all files or pages (that is wherever {{Technique}} is used):

  • "{{Technique|opaque watercolor over graphite|gray wove paper}}" by "{{technique|opaque watercolor|over=graphite|coloron=gray|wove paper}}"
  • "{{technique|blabla, blibli and blublu|bloblo}}" by "{{technique|blabla|and=blibli|and2=blublu|bloblo}}"
  • "{{technique|blabla and blibli|bloblo}}" by "{{technique|blabla|and=blibli|bloblo}}"
  • "{{technique|blabla over blibli|bloblo}}" by "{{technique|blabla|over=blibli|bloblo}}"
  • When the last parameter ends with "mounted on bloblo", replaced that by mounted on bloblo eg "{{technique|blabla mounted on bloblo}}" → "{{technique|blabla|mounted=bloblo}}"

NB= blabla, blibli, bloblo and blublu can be several words long--Zolo (talk) 06:45, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

✓ Done --Schlurcher (talk) 18:01, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. Things are beginning to really improve for artwork descritpions. However, some things were done in the wrong order here -that may be my fault- so that we have {{Technique|opaque watercolor|over=graphite|gray wove paper}} rather than {{Technique|opaque watercolor|over=graphite|coloron=gray|wove paper}}. It would be real nice if it could be fixed. It should only concern files now categorized in The Life of Christ by James Tissot, so that it amounts to replacing "|gray wove paper" by "|color=gray|wove paper" in files of that category.
The problem was that the replaces triggered in the wrong order. I changed this and fixed the pages. --Schlurcher (talk) 16:10, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

(if anyone you are interested, it was occasion for me to notice that other changes can be donein category:the Life of Christ by James Tissot: [[category:European Art in the Brooklyn Museum]] and [[Category:Art of France]] could be removed from all files of the category, <nowiki>{{Artwork-provenanceorcl|Purchased by public subscription}} could be changed to {{Artwork-provenanceorcl|type=Purchase|through=public subscription}} and titles like ''blable blalbla (ding ding)" could be changed to "{{fr|dind ding}} {{en|bable blabla}}" (French probably first because it is the orginal language)--Zolo (talk) 22:02, 20 September 2010 (UTC) ✓ Done --Schlurcher (talk) 16:23, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

Rename categories

Hello,

I would like a bot to rename Category:Paintings by Eugène Ferdinand Victor Delacroix to Category:Paintings by Eugène Delacroix (the latter has been created on May 30th 2010 but apparently not filled).

Similarly I'd like Category:Lithographs by Eugène Ferdinand Victor Delacroix to be renamed to Category:Lithographs by Eugène Delacroix.

It's the standard template, which I wanted you to see, so you can use it in the future, a bot request not being needed. The template permits an admin to automatically create the new cat and move all files and texte.I did similarly for Category:Paintings by Eugène Ferdinand Victor Delacroix in Saint-Sulpice. --Havang(nl) (talk) 11:09, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

Rename and create categories for the Romanian historical monuments

The bot should:

  1. Rename Category:Historic_monuments_in_Romania to Category:Historical_monuments_in_Romania. Historic means "worth remaining in history", while historical means "which belongs to the history" - the latter is the correct translation for the Romanian "istoric"
  2. Rename (historic->historical) all existing subcategories of the category above.
  3. Create categories named Category:Historical_monuments_in_X_County for ALL the Romanian Counties (only some exist). A full list of the categories is given below.

The changes are needed to organize WML2011. Thanks!--Strainu (talk) 19:33, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

I just wrote a little bot for these kind of requests. It's called create_categories.py and it's part of pywikipedia. Anyone feel like testing it to create these categories? Multichill (talk) 21:18, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Could someone please check and correct User:Multichill/Romania? This is based on the list above. Looks like there's some difference between the naming in that list and the names of the categories here at Commons. When that's done it's just a click to generate the categories. Multichill (talk) 18:09, 10 July 2011 (UTC)
Looks like it's got every one in the list above, and the names match EnWp cats - so AFAICT it looks good. :-) sısɐuuǝɔıʌ∀ (diskuto) 19:18, 10 July 2011 (UTC)
So what is the right one, Category:Argeș County or Category:Argeş County? Either the current (red link) categories need to be renamed or the list needs to be changed. Multichill (talk) 19:49, 10 July 2011 (UTC)
Category:Argeș County is correct. The S-comma is part of the Romanian alphabet. The other chracter is a Cedilla - which was widely substituted for S-comma because S-comma was missing from pre-3.0 Unicode standards. Also, the Romanian Wikipedia article uses the S-comma - Județul Argeș. sısɐuuǝɔıʌ∀ (diskuto) 20:00, 10 July 2011 (UTC)
Ok. I created the categories. Now what needs to be done:
  1. Correctly name the county categories (see story about S-comma)
  2. Merge incorrect duplicate subcategories of Category:Historical monuments in Romania to the new ones
  3. Get rid of Category:Historic monuments in Romania (churches) (it's a mess)
Multichill (talk) 21:50, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
Hi there and sorry for the long silence.
  1. Done (by changing the subcategories, we're not pushing for the diacritics change on commons just yet)

Changing description of maps

Could a bot change the automatically copied description to something like Map showing the borders of parish X in the hundred of Y?

All of my maps in this category should be changed: Category:Maps of civil parishes of Sweden plus all other maps I have made. Edaen (talk) 21:31, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

I think you need to be more specific with WHAT you want to change and in WHICH files. Can you provide an example of changes you would like to see? I put in User:Edaen/maps some of the files I think you meant to correct. Can you verify the list and change it if needed?--Jarekt (talk) 17:39, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
The text in the description is copied by derivativeFX and relates to the source files. The maps are cut outs from combinations of source files and the descriptive text in no longer a correct description of the maps. The text should be somthing like Map showing the situation of the civil parish of V in the hundred of X (or hundreds of X1 and X2 ...), county Y (or counties Y1 and Y2 ...), region Z, Sweden. Circa 1850-1900. Where the maps have a double name, the first is the name of the hundred (X) and the second is the name of the parish (V). The region is given in the category begining with Maps of civil parishes of Z. The hundred is also given in a category and this is a subcategory under counties.
For exampel, in File:Fjäre Älvsåker.svg Fjäre is the name of the hundred and Älvsåker the civil parish. The category Maps of civil parishes of Halland gives the name of the region, in this case Halland. The category Fjäre härad is a subcategory of Hundreds of Halland County which gives the county.
In some cases a parish may belong to more than one hundred and/or county such as File:Faurås Gunnarp.svg.

OK I will look into it.--Jarekt (talk) 17:41, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
Thanks! Edaen (talk) 17:55, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
I looked through the data and this is more of the metadata gathering problem than bot job, since for each file we have to figure out parish, one or 2 hundred names, one or two region name and one or two county names. Once we have those I can change the descriptions. I figured some of those out for 255 files in User:Edaen/maps and saved it as Comma-separated values Excel file here. First 15 files do not have parishes and all are lacking counties. Can you please add those? --Jarekt (talk) 19:51, 5 July 2011 (UTC)
I've added hundreds to the first 15 files. The last file, File:Marks härad.svg should not be included since it is a map of the hundred. I put the list on User:Jarekt/a. Edaen (talk) 21:15, 5 July 2011 (UTC)
How about counties do you know easy way to populate them? --Jarekt (talk) 01:28, 6 July 2011 (UTC)
The only way I can figure out is to use the category-structure, for example Category:Ås härad. They are more or less hopeless in reality with borders dividing parishes and relatively frequent changes and merges. Edaen (talk) 06:54, 6 July 2011 (UTC)
It is running. Hopefully it is OK. If not I will try again. --Jarekt (talk) 16:49, 6 July 2011 (UTC)
Looks good. Thanks! Edaen (talk) 05:59, 7 July 2011 (UTC)

Move files within categories

Hi, I would like to ask a bot, if it can move files within the following categories:

If the bot knows an administrator, could you ask him to delete the empty categories than?--Juandev (talk) 06:27, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

It's being done.
You can generally request such renames on User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands‎‎ or use cat-a-lot to move them directly.
Should Files by Juan de Vojníkov also be renamed? --  Docu  at 10:43, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

I see. Thaks. Well Files by Juan de Vojníkov could be also renamed, but there is a problem that not all files I uploaded are there. See the next request.--Juandev (talk) 06:13, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

I'll move them. We can check afterwards what is left. --  Docu  at 06:20, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
Mostly done. I tried Special:Search/Juandev and Special:Search/Juan de Vojnikov. --  Docu  at 20:06, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

OK, thank you very much.--Juandev (talk) 18:17, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

Add a category

I would like to add all files uploaded by user:Juandev to this category: Category:Files by Juandev. Thx!--Juandev (talk) 06:34, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Add a new category

Hello, I'd like to add a new category to all the medias I've put online until today. Add Category:Images by JeanBono to all files from user:JeanBono. Thanks! JeanBono (talk) 20:32, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Is there anyone who is willing to provide a list of unused files in Category:Images which should use TeX (incl. subcategories)? GLAMorous does not have this functionality. --Leyo 16:38, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

You could use Glamours on each category and than compare compare the listing with the result of CatScan2. --  Docu  at 20:09, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
I will post a complete list of unused files in that category (incl. subcategories) into User:Leyo/TeX in an hour. odder (talk) 11:18, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

Created {{Dlib.si}} which should be used atm by around 1250 files. Any chance a bot would do something like "|Source=[http://www.dlib.si/?urn=URN:NBN:SI:IMG-2MF8GE74 dlib.si]" => "|Source={{Dlib.si|2MF8GE74}}" on them (there are some more variants)? --Sporti (talk) 16:13, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

Sure, no problem. For future reference. If it's just a link:

python replace.py -lang:commons -family:commons -regex -nocase -weblink:www.dlib.si "\|\s*Source=http://www.dlib.si/\?URN=URN:NBN:SI:img-(.+)\r\n" "|Source={{Dlib.si|\1}}\n"

If it's a link with some text:

python replace.py -lang:commons -family:commons -regex -nocase -weblink:www.dlib.si "\|\s*Source=\[http://www.dlib.si/\?URN=URN:NBN:SI:img-(.+)\s(.+)\]\r\n" "|Source={{Dlib.si|\1}}\n"

Working on the remaining ones right now. Multichill (talk) 13:49, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
The 108 leftovers are at http://toolserver.org/~multichill/temp/queries/external_not_template.txt (query). Should probably be cleaned up by hand or semi-automatic. Multichill (talk) 14:14, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
Ok thanks, I'll do the rest by hand. --Sporti (talk) 15:43, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

Internationalization: own

Could someone please internationalize the uploads of this user? It is mainly about

{{de|selbst erstellt}}{{en|own work}} → {{own}}

(see my sample edit). --Leyo 14:20, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Not done all, see e.g. File:Acetylchlorid BKChem.svg. --Leyo 15:03, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
Yes technically correct, 3000 left in the pipleline, but will be done soon. --Schlurcher (talk) 15:23, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
