First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Category:Sanchi[edit]

salut Chaoborus,

well it's very simple, Sanchi is only a village and not World Heritage, while the Buddhist monuments at that village are World Heritage. It's like "Versailles" and the palace there. Gryffindor (talk) 10:35, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Fossil" categories[edit]

While extinct taxa are usually only found as fossil specimens, this does not mean that all the media collected in Wikicommons about those taxa are images of fossils. Many taxa such as those in category:Dinosauria are represented by illustrations and models, not by actual specimens. Thus the fossil specimens are subcategorized for easy location in the main Category:Fossils. Please do not arbitrarily blank these cats!--Kevmin (talk) 04:19, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Chaoborus!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

How friendly - I guess you know that pictures from the party to celebrate his 100th birthday don't belong in his category. Fine. Or pictures from the churches he created. Some might say the church should be in the category of Ochoffa, but I'm happy to go with your view Victuallers (talk) 22:07, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Type 62[edit]

Hello.

It's very easy to confuse Type 62 and Type 59 since the former is pretty much just a scaled down version of the latter. There are however some details that can help identify these vehicles. Here are the three most important ones: 1. The fume extractor, both Type 59 and Type 62 have a fume extractor at the tip of the barrel but the Type 62 one is more complex. Also it's positioned further away from the muzzle. 2. The roadwheels or rather their shape. When compared to the Type 59 ones they look drastically different. 3. A rather thin track. This can only be seen when viewing the vehicle from the front.

It's interesting that this should be labeled as T 58. My guess is they wanted to label it T 59 but someone confused the numbers. There actually was a Chinese medium tank known as Type 58. It was a copy of the Soviet T-34-85. Not many people know about it mostly because only a small number was produced before it was replaced on the production lines by the more advanced Type 59.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement[edit]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

 • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
 • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

 2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
 3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

Pay attention to licensing
Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.

File:Morrison-color.jpg seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file.

If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file discussion page.

Thanks for uploading File:Morrison-color.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Morrison-color.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

Hi, please don't overwrite an existing file with a different image, please see COM:OVERWRITE. If you think there is a problem with the current file, feel free to nominate it for deletion instead, using the 'nominate for deletion' link from the menu. Jcb (talk) 15:44, 7 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The fact that this is a picture of Georg Cantor is not relevant to you ? --Chaoborus (talk) 17:17, 7 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That's not an excuse to violate COM:OVERWRITE. Again, if you think there is a problem, nominate for deletion instead. Jcb (talk) 17:21, 7 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The deletion was completed on 2019-02-07. (The image's history and upload date are lost.) The photo of Georg Cantor (Ioan-budaideleanu.jpg) mis-titled as "Ion Budai-Deleanu", apparently got picked up. It is shown by stale mirrors at https://alchetron.com/Ion-Budai-Deleanu and https://www.cartepedia.ro/autor/ion-budai-deleanu-11178 ; it was copied to goodreads article at https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/1984808.Ion_Budai_Deleanu (a change request is in there); it is overlaid with "Ion Budai-Deleanu (1760-1820)" at http://www.trilulilu.ro/cufarul-cu-teatru-radiofonic-tiganiada-de-ion-buda ; and it is collaged on Pinterest (possibly others - these results are from Google Images).

Also, User:Mihai Andrei has suggested that the new image, File:Ion Budai-Deleanu.jpg, created 2019-02-07, might actually be en:Inocențiu Micu-Klein - he deleted the image from en:Ion Budai-Deleanu, and tried to rename it "File:Inocentiu Micu-Klein.jpg" here. (The request was denied. Renaming is not a remedy unless there is an option to prevent automatic "repair" of the pages that use it - if it really is the wrong image, broken image links would be preferable.) He did not take other action such as commenting on the image description or its talk page, or taking it down globally - the image remains on 5 Wikipedias. The image was accidentally deleted from Romanian Wikipedia; I put it back so that more would people see the possibly incorrect image. Image searches for "Inocentiu Micu-Klein" and "Ion Budai-Deleanu" have some overlapping results and some resemblance. (It is confusing out there.) Maybe this image should be checked and confirmed if possible. Are there any actual images of IBD? In an old book? Does this image match one of them? Do we know this is not IMK? What is the actual source? of the image? I don't see any mention on the claimed source, https://czytam.pl/ . - A876 (talk) 07:42, 15 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your message. It is an interesting development, and User:Mihai Andrei could be right. Sorry I can not help you : I don't know any actuel image of IBD. My old (french) dictionnary has none. Chaoborus (talk) 15:14, 15 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
•I hoped you would re-confirm your source, in case it was correct. But I looked further; it is not. Similar pictures of Ioan Inocentiu Micu-Klein on the web are mislabeled "Ion Budai-Deleanu" more often than they are correctly labeled "Inocentiu Micu-Klein". (IBD quit studying for priesthood; the image shows a bishop, so it cannot be IBD. Better: I found ONE similar image with a Latin inscription confirming it is IMK (LOOK HERE).) You seem to have made the same mistake as the person who picked up the image of Georg Cantor - you trusted the web. I can't find a definite image of IBD; maybe none exists, or maybe none is online; and maybe that's why people keep grabbing wrong pictures. I have nominated the picture of IMK as IBD for deletion (overwriting is not a remedy (and I have nothing to overwrite with); moving (renaming) is not a remedy as mentioned previously.) I left notes at Wikidata:Talk:Q840643 (Ioan Budai-Deleanu) and at Category talk:Inocențiu Micu-Klein.
•I wondered how you came to publish the image – is anyone's photo of an old painting public-domain because the painting is public-domain? If it's okay to publish, it should be okay to republish it as a new image of "Inocentiu Micu-Klein"... - A876 (talk) 06:29, 17 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Good job! I did not actually trust the web, but it was the first image uploaded, before those of Georg Kantor, which was obviously wrong... the image was only "less wrong" . Chaoborus (talk) 08:27, 17 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

 • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
 • To perform file name swaps.
 • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion warning

Danse de la fontaine émergente has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

"Syndicalism"[edit]

Edit I just made; I figure you'd want to know, there's an issue of a false cognate here between French and English. "Syndicalism" in English is a rather specific form of socialism, in French syndicalisme révolutionnaire. The more general French "syndicalisme" would be "trade unionism" in English. I see this is a mess in Wikidata, and I'll start a discussion on their chat. - Jmabel ! talk 23:08, 28 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
