--Phrood 21:03, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Papyrus Westcar[edit]

Hello there!

Yes, the original image I posted to the Wikimedia Commons was a merger of two photos that were stitched together using PhotoShop. I also have it as a single image, standing slightly further back in order to get a decent reference image, so that is also available as well.

Judging by your User Page I am guessing that you are interested in further tweaking the image. If so, please be my guest!

In order to not further clutter up the Commons with duplicate files, I have uploaded the unprocessed files to http://www.captmondo.com/Ephraim33/.

Cheers from a snowy Toronto!

Thank you very much! --Ephraim33 16:37, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo, you've uploaded a picture of Gerardus Mercator in 2005. While scanning old books during an Project of German Wikipedia, I found this picture in an German book from 1936. You have given "Frans Hogenberg" as author whether in my book there is Hendrik Goltzius given as author. Could you please check the book where you've been scanning the picture from? -- MichaelSchoenitzer (talk) 13:40, 27 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also: In dem Buch steht als Bildunterschrift "I. Portrait of Mercator at the age of 62, engraved by Frans Hogenberg, 1574". --Ephraim33 (talk) 16:36, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Ephraim33!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Why are you redirecting pages to categories?[edit]

Why? /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 09:49, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I won't ask why, I've just revoked your actions. First, I can see no good reason for cross-namespace redirections (but I could be proved wrong on this one). More important, your edits just blanked the work of other contributors. This loss of information is just plain vandalism, so if it was a mistake, please pay attention, and if it wasn't, please don't do that again. Regards, --Eusebius (talk) 10:12, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

For example pages like Potsdam Conference, Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran, Robert Bárány or Karl Landsteiner have absolutely no real value above the category. And a lot of people taking care of categories, but almost no one takes care of these pages. So categories are usually in good shape, whereas pages often are not. Only when there are more than a few files, these pages make sence, since you can sort the files in different order, use captions and so on (example Albert Einstein). By the why, I find it kind of rude, to don't give me the time to answer your first question, but revert everything. --Ephraim33 (talk) 10:44, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I revert because it is vandalism. You're pushing your own personal opinion about galleries and categories (in spite of the existing polls about galleries and categories, none of them asking for the suppression of existing galleries) by introducing non-standard redirects and blanking other people's work. This is just an obvious motive for reversion. --Eusebius (talk) 10:55, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
 1. Can you show me such polls about galleries and categories?
Sure. Commons:Galleries, Commons:Images on normal pages or categories:Vote, Commons:Categories vs Galleries. There may be a lot more, this is a hot issue and has always been so.
 1. I don't thing these redirects are non-standard. At least I have seen them from time to time, for eample Jitzchak Rabin, Milton Friedman and Albert Schweitzer.
An object of a given nature "replaced" (through symbolic linking) by an object of another nature is somewhat unnatural, and very uncommon on this project. "There are some already" is not a very strong argument, I'm sure you understand it ("category redirections" exist, but please don't create any, they're only left behind after category deletions). However, to the best of my knowledge, there is no clear policy about it (hence my disclaimer in my first message), so you're really welcome if you want to start a debate about it on the village pump in order to clarify the situation.
 1. I don't think I have destroyed other people's work, because there was basically no work in Karl Landsteiner et al.
Before your edit, a gallery was there, and after your edit, the gallery had disappeared: you cause harm to people working with galleries preferentially to categories. This is often the case for content reusers, since galleries are (normally) collections of selected and organized content, by opposition to the unsorted bunch of c... categories can be sometimes.
 1. For people who are searching for images, these redirects are more helpful than the previous pages (only in these cases I have replaced the page by a redirect. If the page was ok, I haven't done anything). I can not imagine anyone who thinks Karl Landsteiner is more helpful for the users than Category:Karl Landsteiner. So why keeping unuseful stuff? Only because it was there?

--Ephraim33 (talk) 11:39, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Again, some people find galleries more useful. It's not your case, it's not mine either if you want to know, but it's apparently the case of many people who have expressed strong views in historical polls and have given a place to galleries in the organization of Commons. If you think a gallery should be deleted for some reason, it must go through a deletion request. You can't decide to blank stub galleries because they are not good/pretty/whatever are your own criteria. Instead, you are very much welcome to improve them by selecting better pictures or organizing them in thematic sections. And if you think galleries as a whole are useless, please just ignore them, but please be aware that the latest significant poll asked for a technical merge of the notions of gallery and category. Mediawiki is obviously far from that, but reading the discussions I've pointed to you can be instructive, I've myself learned a lot about how people consider galleries and categories, and taught myself to respect their point of view and the way they use Commons. --Eusebius (talk) 12:02, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Was soll das?[edit]

--Devilm25 (talk) 14:34, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

--Ephraim33 (talk) 14:38, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Warum dann die Karte als "Platzhalter" hochladen. Bringt doch nix. --Devilm25 (talk) 23:09, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Cairngaan[edit]

Hi Ephraim33, Category:Cairngaan is one of a number of bot created categories of places in the United Kingdom, the main reason for this was in relation to the bot transfer of properly licensed files from the geograph project. in this case [1] either the bot hasn't gotten around to them yet or they're here waiting to be sorted. There are a large number of these empty categories, which on the surface may seem superfulous but are useful. Having categorised geograph images myself, its great to be able to find the exact category you need without having to create the branch for it.

I've temporarily removed the speedy template you added to the category. If you feel strongly enough about it please feel free to reinstate it. KTo288 (talk) 09:03, 24 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If I see an empty category, I try to fill it (here, here, here, here, here). If there is no file, neither here nor (tranferable files) in any other wikipedia, I think there is no point in keeping this empty category. And in fact it would make my life easier, if empty categories without the possibility to fill them, would simply not exist. Since I look for empty categories using google, I would not have to check them over and over again. And since they are bot-created no work is lost. They can be recreated easily by any admin. But I will not fight for this. --Ephraim33 (talk) 09:25, 24 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

cat 19xx Deutsche Bundespost stamps[edit]

Was meinst du denn? --Ephraim33 (talk) 12:48, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to copyright
File:Perelman, Grigori (1966).jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

It's no copyvio. Please see Category:Pictures from Oberwolfach Photo Collection (Bergman). --Ephraim33 (talk) 08:15, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, please see File talk:Perelman, Grigori (1966).jpg. Are there other GFDL images that you uploaded as "relicense" even though they were uploaded after August 2009? Hekerui (talk) 08:23, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder how people should find the category on their own, it's hidden. Hekerui (talk) 08:25, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I copied the licence from another Bergman picture, which was maybe uploaded before August 2009. (I did not know that licences can have a best before date ;-) I have no idea if I have done the same in any other picture. Most files I upload are already in public domain. Is there any possibility to find all my GFDL images? Bay the way, you can make hidden categories visible in your "preferences" -> "Appearance" -> "Show hidden categories". --Ephraim33 (talk) 08:41, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! The criteria are in the migration guide. However, I don't really get why the MGA73bot2 marked File:Young theodore kaczynski.jpeg as ineligible, unlike the Perelman pic it was uploaded prior to the migration deadline. As for your images, I went over your uploads up to August 2009 with Special:ListFiles and couldn't find another image from the Oberwolfach Photo Collection that was problematic. However, you used flickr to upload for example File:Whale tail.jpg. Flickr image licenses have to be checked by a bot or a "trusted" user and be marked as such. Normally, if you use an assist to upload a flickr image, you are automatically given the Template:flickrreview. Best Hekerui (talk) 08:55, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Tagging empty NoUploads categories[edit]

Hi Ephrami33, I noticed you tagged the empty Category:William Logsdail for deletion. However, this category exists in order to remind people that this artist's works are not in the public domain, and to help detect uploads that need to be deleted. Please don't tag categories for deletion that have the NoUploads tag on the category description page. Thank you! Dcoetzee (talk) 20:17, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Reilly's maps[edit]

Hi Ephraim33 !

I renamed these files according to the renaming guidelines, which express that a "change from completely meaningless names into suitable names, according to what the image displays" should be made (# 2).

If you don't agree with the way I renamed these files, please request new names and do so til the bottom of the category.

Best, Papatt (talk) 22:39, 22 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is that you consider only your point of view. OK, you know that Reilly was a cartographer who made a lot of maps but what about others ?
Maybe you didn't notice that Reilly is the name of many people and some places too. So if these names weren't "completely meaningless" in your mind, they were at least misleading, another undisputed reason to rename a file (i. e. # 3). Of course this still applies to the not yet renamed Reilly files.
However, I'll let you some time to find someone relevant to approve your point of view and deny mine before going on what I began.
Please also notice that renaming back isn't this easy. The redirection has to be deleted before a renaming can be done, that means three operations and at least two persons are needed to proceed (1 : ask for deletion - 2 : deletion - 3 : renaming).
With this in mind, you'll understand that the shortest way to an homogenous status isn't the way back.
Best, Papatt (talk) 10:08, 23 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Please agree that I couldn't assume my renamings would be disputed since I had at least one undisputed reason (according to the renaming guidelines) to do so. My choices can be disputed, I can agree too.
OK, I can agree with your choice, but I'd like to suggest "File:Reilly's map Nr <number>.jpg" and, for the "<number>X" maps, something more meaningful like "File:Reilly's map Nr <number> coloured.jpg" (to be checked since I noticed some differences).
I'd be glad you ask for some more help by formally requesting renaming by means of the template Reilly's map Nr <number>.jpg (where <number> will be explicited), especially for the "<number>X" files and relatives.
According to that, I'll follow your guideline (with the "harmonize" reason) while other filemovers will deal with your formal requests. Please let me know if (and how) you agree by pointing to your first requests.
Best, Papatt (talk) 08:03, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

--Llez (talk) 13:52, 13 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Juchu! Weitere Schnecken! --Ephraim33 (talk) 15:42, 13 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Please note that banknotes could be in fraction of currencies. I stated this in file names, so it's not necessary to know language. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:22, 5 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Of course you are right. But on the banknote it's written 2 kopecks (and not 0.02 rubles) so the category is Banknotes with a face value of 2 (and not Category:Banknotes with a face value of 0.02). --Ephraim33 (talk) 14:37, 5 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

But 1 kopeck = 0.01 ruble. Currency is ruble. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:06, 6 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The value (the number on the banknote) is 2. The unit (kopeks or rubles or cent or dollars) does not matter. It's the similar to the 2 kopek coins like File:2 копейки СССР 1988 г.jpg, which can be found in Category:Coins with a face value of 2. --Ephraim33 (talk) 14:39, 6 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Holevo, Alexander2.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

File:Suttinger, Karl Benedikt (1746-1830).jpg[edit]

Hello! You uploaded the above file of Karl Benedikt Suttinger (my ancestor, thanks for the upload!) and I would like to see the rest of the book it was from, or at least the page that the picture comes (hoping that it includes more information). I was wondering if you knew where I could find the book. I can't seem to find it online; do you have a copy I could purchase or would you be willing to send me pictures by any chance?

Thanks for any information, Adam — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 72.12.205.35 (talk) 14:40, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Stamps of the Faroe Islands[edit]

We need images for Jens Christian Svabo (2010) and 2017 onward. Can you help with this? Please ping me. -- Valjean (talk) 14:53, 3 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You can get the stamps from en.stamps.fo. For example for the list of Faroese stamps 2008: FO 639-648. The stamps of Jens Christian Svabo you can find here and here. --Ephraim33 (talk) 15:45, 3 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry I didn't communicate well. We need help with getting them uploaded. I'm not very good at it. We are specifically in need of those with images of people for this list: List of people on the postage stamps of the Faroe Islands. -- Valjean (talk) 15:57, 3 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
