Deleted image in a wide image template

Potential bot improvement

Nation-specified train station clock category

I see in my watchlist that your bot changed the category "station clocks" to "Train station clocks." I just thought you might like to know that tonight I've created a new category called "Train station clocks in the United States," in order to narrow it down from those in the USA. Category problems

Your bot recently changed the category (Category:University of Dayton) to (Category:University of Dayton, Ohio). This is a bot mistake and the new category should be deleted and changed back to (Category:University of Dayton) to reflect it's official title and name. I might also add that there is only one University of Dayton in the world. So the state after it is not needed. Please message me once the changes have been made. Thank you. Edit summary SieBot for category moves

Hi Siebrand, SieBot currently doesn't provide (a link to) the requestor's user (talk) page, like CommonsDelinker does. Over time the history of /commads is quite long and it's next to impossible to go and dig through all of it just to find that perhaps the timestamp on the edit of SieBot is several hours after the request was made (sometimes happends) - either way I think the way CommonsDelinker does it's stuff with providing a link to the user is a big step forward in the user experience. Could you build a similar principle in SieBot ? –Krinkletalk 17:49, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

CommonsDelinker on Wikinews

I followed the 'contact the operator' link from CommonsDelinker's meta page and reached you. So hi :). I'm sure I don't need to recap the problems with the bot on en.wn; bot isn't trusted enough to edit the archive, so requests need made manually. Some unscrupulous individuals simply delete images in use without consultation or giving a fuck. But, it strikes me that it wouldn't be hard to modify the bot to be able to make standardised protected page edit requests automatically. Could you, or whoever would be responsible (I understand a team jointly operates the bot, could be wrong) get in touch with me to discuss what would be required? Via rail stations

The CommonsDelinker removes the file links from templates, but especially the {{Vva}} is senseless without parameter. (s.a.:Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Vector version available/error) Can you please fix this? I believe that your bot

just removed a picture from J. Massey Rhind in wikipedia. Which is probably a good thing. A bunch of images were posted by some galley or something and that was one. Probably not a copyright issue since the work was done c. 1905, but the reason I'm here is that the text of the article mentioned the image, and when the image was gone the text no longer made sense. Does it make sense to mention this to you? PAS I did fix the text and removed the mention of the image. Still . . .... Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 01:23, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

Category moves by SieBot - change of old categories into category redirects

Some users who move categories using SieBot either remove old categories which should be kept as category redirect or keep the old categories empty without any redirect and without any note that the content was moved. I think, the SieBot should be improved in order to force its users to choose one of the two possibilities: either remove the old category (if it is confusing or erroneous) or to change the old category into category redirect (if the old category name can be searched or linked from somewhere). Could be the change of old categories into category redirects implemented as a defaultly pertaining step of the automatized moving process? --ŠJů (talk) 04:09, 7 March 2011 (UTC)

Agree, but the very large majority of category moves result in a deletion of the original category, so this should be the default (new destination category is always clickable in the deletion summary). --Foroa (talk) 04:20, 7 March 2011 (UTC)
See Commons:Rename a category#Should the old category be deleted?. I agree with that recommendation, though I realize that Foroa (since long ago) contravenes this practice. It is especially unacceptable to remove the old category unless all links from other projects are corrected. To create a category redirect should be the default treatment. Only "If the old category is a simple typo or you are the only person who ever used the category and you are the one fixing it up, it can safely be deleted." Also old categories with confusing or mistaken names should be deleted. That's all. --ŠJů (talk) 18:18, 7 March 2011 (UTC)

Wrong category moves

Note this Commons:Hospoda U Commons#SieBot which sais you make a wrong names. e.g. Category:Na příkopě (Prague) (incorrect) from Category:Na Příkopě (Prague) (correct) - decapitalizing later makes in the Czech language great importance and thus "Na příkopě" street doesnt exists at all and thus this category is wrong.

Category:Na příkopě (Prague) is correct, "Na příkopě" is the only official form of this proper local name. "Na Příkopě" is an unofficial simplified alternative of orthographic form according to the 1993 orthographic reform and is used in some popular maps but the official (and specialistic) form is uniquely determined and codified and used in official maps and ordinances. All proposed moves were carefully verified in most official and reliable sources.
RussBot worked correctly. A lapse was that SieBot moved the content into the goal category but didn't copy the original category page description to the goal category and kept some of goal categories as category redirects. --ŠJů (talk) 18:31, 7 March 2011 (UTC)

CommonsDelinker replacement svg to svg

Hi. I have a problem with CommonsDelinker task to replace some SVG files to another SVG files. For example a I made a task here. File is still used and linked. Problem is common, a I had many situations. Also here. Problem is more often when files has more links. Sometimes CD doesn't start at all. Especially when file is in highly used templates. Looking at the edit summary for the creation of Category:Petroglyphs of fish, I was surprised to see that SieBot attributes itself as one of the editors of the other page. Was this intentional or accidental? I just found it rather odd. Nyttend (talk) 18:26, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

Deleting images present as image redirect on local projects

Hi Siebrand, I recently created the Commons fair use upload bot, which uploads images deleted on Commons as fair use candidates to local projects on which they are in use.

The problem is this:

  1. The bot cannot upload images to En under the same filename as an image that has not yet been deleted on Commons. En restricts this kind of upload to admins only.
  2. To work around this, my bot re-uploads the images at a different filename, and creates an image redirect at the original filename.
  3. After the image is later deleted from Commons, CommonsDelinker removes uses of the image even though an image redirect exists at that title on the local project, referring to a copy of the image, so there is no reason to remove it. See an example.

I hope you can fix this problem as it will help limit the disruption caused by image deletions at Commons. Thanks a lot! Dcoetzee (talk) 23:28, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

Commons Delinker issue

Hi. I see you maintain the Commons Delinker, so thought you'd want to know...

The Commons Delinker failed to accurately delink a deleted picture on en:Heterotrimeric G protein, leaving a link at the top of the article.

It deleted

but failed to delete the next line,

My dear colleagie, I feel quite frustrated after you did your job. Deleted image of mybeloved father, olympic medalist Yuri Shurkalov. That picture was taken by me, when I was a little boy. Anyhow, I have the rights to place it in the Wiki. But I see, I broke some rule, so you insisted to delete it. PLEASE, help me to restore justige. At least, learn me how to. SieBot's little errors (CommonsDelinker category move function)

Hoi Siebrand, I noted that SieBot made some unwanted edits, or "errors". I've already fixed them manually, so you don't have to care about the affected pages/images. But I thought I let you know, so that you can look into it and can hopefully fix the "problem behind". Here's what I can report:

  • The CommonsDelinker command from earlier today was to move 12 related categories with a total of 1417 entries. Basically the task was to move all files from Category:Aerial views of XY to Category:Aerial photographs of XY.
  • Several files (approximated: more than 100) are in two or more of these 12 categories, because all the photos show the neighbouring islands of East Frisia. In most cases only one island is pictured and there was only one category to move (without any difficulty for the bot, logically). But sometimes two or more of the islands are pictured, and more than one category has to be changed therefore.
  • When the bot stopped working on this task (moving all 12 categories with all entries) there were 16 files left, that were effectively not moved. I waited a while, and also edited the command subpage with a new task (leaving the entries which said "448 entries moved, 6 to go" or so), but the bot ignored these files apparently and didn't touch them again. Finally it started working on another completely unrelated task.
  • I then checked these 16 files and found 19 wrong edits (3 files with 2 wrong edits each): [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11], [12], [13], [14], [15], [16], [17], [18], [19], [20], [21], [22], [23].
  • The errors made were always the same: The bot changed back an already moved/corrected category on a following edit (changing photographs back to views, while the command was to change from views to photographs).
  • I was looking for a specific pattern where/when this occured, but didn't really found one. First I thought that it only happened to files that are in three or four of these categories ("bah, the bot got confused, that was too complicated" *g*). But that's obviously not the case, compare e.g. File:Flug Borkum nach Juist 2010 027.JPG with File:Flug Borkum nach Juist 2010 052.JPG. Both images are in exactly the same categories. In the first case the two relevant categories were changed as expected ([24], [25]). In the second case one category was changed as expected [26], but on the next edit something went wrong. The time span between edits is also not of importance, as far as I can see. Sometimes the edits happened shortly after one another (within seconds), and sometimes there were minutes in between.

I hope you can help me. I was wondering if there is an easy way to check which wikis CommonsDelinker worked on within a certain period. In particular, I'm interested in knowing which pages had these files removed, so that some damage control can be done - many of these images could be replaced, and they were simply removed from articles. Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

The page linked above is getting very full with replace commands given by file movers that are not administrators (like me). Hello Siebrand, I don't see in your archive this point: when CommonsDelinker is deleting a photo link in an infobox, the caption is not removed: [29] or [30]. Is it possible to clean up the caption? Ciao, visto che nel modificare le cartine sei esperto, riusciresti gentilmente a modificare questa cartina File:Monza mappa.png (http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Monza_mappa.png) allargando lo sfondo con i nuovi comuni di Cornate d'Adda, Busnago, Roncello, Caponago ad est (e magari segnando come nome la città di Cornate d'adda) e Lentate sul Seveso a ovest (segnandola anche come nome)? Commons delinker

Hello, in Der Stürmer I had a photo of the front page of one copy of the newspaper. It got deleted from Wikimedia Commons with no warning, and the Commons Delinker deleted it from 13 articles. Now I have restored the image on the English language Wikipedia, and I have reverted the bot changes to the English language article. What I think I can't do is revert the changes on the foreign language Wikipedias, since I don't have accounts there, and don't speak those languages enough to even know what "undo" "save" etc. buttons are. Is there any way for the bot to fix this? It is a bit unfortunate that 13 articles were modified due to one image removal and now there appears to be no way to revert once the image has been restored. Category to delete

Hi, I've taken a look to the categories about BMW vehicles. I've seen an error: the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé is in the wrong category (Category:BMW F14), so I've moved all the pictures in the right category (Category: BMW F06). Change of Category Kirchdorf BE into Category:Kirchdorf, Bern

It may by discussed if it is good to change category names like "Kirchdorf BE" into "Kirchdorf, Bern", the change could be justified although it is not necessary as "Kirchdorf BE" is the official form used in Switzerland (even found at the village entry). But the point is: If you make such a modification you should make shure the the links to commonscat on all projects in all languages is changed also. Jewellery (or Jewelery)

Hi Siebrand - Please note that in English, unlike French & maybe other languages, "jewellery" only means stuff you carry on your body or clothes for adornment. Large metal plates, chalices, forks etc etc are "metalwork" or "silverware" if silver, and so on. The categories should be "metalwork" for most stuff. Thanks - hope you are well. Commons delinker deleting captions

Beste Siebrand, het valt mij op dat in deze [33] edit de Commons Delinker met de afbeelding meteen de bijschrift uit een boek sloopt. Nu kan ik mij voorstellen dat in veel gevallen een bijschrift zinloos is zonder plaatje, maar in dit geval gaat ook een stuk inhoudelijke tekst verloren. Ik vraag mij toch af of dat wenselijk is. Verder vraag ik mij af of het niet mogelijk is om vanuit Commons direct lokaal een waarschuwing te krijgen dat een afbeelding verwijderd gaat worden. Nu moeten we achteraf op zoek gaan naar een vervangende afbeelding, wat extra lastig is omdat met het verwijderen van de afbeelding ook de categorieinformatie e.d. is verdwenen, terwijl het zoeken in dezelfde categorie wellicht snel tot een goede vervangende afbeelding zou leiden. Category moves

Hi. Moves of group of categories by User:SieBot have a systemic defect: when some of moved categories is a subcategory of another one, such subcategory remains in the old category and is not moved to the moved category. It is necessary to not move any next category until the previous one is not completely moved. Could you fix the bot in this sense?

The second defect I noticed is that in case that the new category was existing before the moving still (as a category redirect or when the categories are merged), some movers don't check whether the content of the old category page (description and categorization) is copied to the page of the new (goal) category. Could you devise some aid to prevent such cases?

Commons Delinker is deleting links to existing files on it.wiki

Hello, as per above, Commons Delinker is delinking many files on it.wiki, files that are still existing here on Commons. Examples are File:Lystrosaurus_BW.jpg and File:Pterodaustro_BW.jpg, and many many others. It seems that all these files have been deleted and suddenly restored. CommonsDelinker: protection request

Hi, is it possible that CommonsDelinker doesn't delete a link but sends a message about deleted files at Commons? In b:de:Das Schreiblernbuch there are a lot of links to the same picture. Yesterday the bot changed 12 sites after deleting File:Balut.jpg see the recent changes. On these pages it's often difficult to find the place where the link is removed. I'ld prefer the "red link". Therefore I propose: Protect b:de:Das Schreiblernbuch and all the subpages - these pages only! - not to change by the bot. Instead of changing, send a message to b:de:Talk:Das Schreiblernbuch. It would be useful if the bot could include the list of all related pages. But that's not necessary because this list can be created by prefix search. -- Thank you very much! More incorrect delinkings of reuploaded files

Hi Siebrand, I asked you about this about 6 months ago but haven't yet seen a fix. CommonsDelinker is removing links to files deleted on Commons, even if those files have already been locally reuploaded. See for example [38], where it removed the image "Saina Nehwal.jpg", which had at that time already been re-uploaded at en:File:Saina Nehwal.jpg (actually, due to technical restrictions, it was re-uploaded at en:File:Saina Nehwal - from Commons.jpg and en:File:Saina Nehwal.jpg was converted into a redirect). The file has since been deleted from En, but it definitely existed at the time. Can you please fix CommonsDelinker so that it does not remove links to files that exist on the local wiki, even as a redirect? This would make my bot, User:Commons fair use upload bot, much more useful, and help build positive relationships between Commons and other wikis. Thank you! A wystarczy pojechać do którejś z nich i zobaczyć jak wygląda tablica z nazwą miejscowości. A skoro podjąłeś już taki trud to zmieniaj też commons na wikipedii. These Volacion deleting my pics for copyright, but which were not clearly explain their own work and put the power where you serve, as files (File:GordonMichaelWoolvett.jpg And File:WWE '13.jpg) deserve to be restored and clearly explain where take them out and so far I saw were asking me the answer but explained.

The deletion log shows you deleted Category:Canadian actors, because the contents was {{Category redirect|Actors from Canada}}.

That seems like perfectly reasonable content to me. So, am I missing something?

Missing file

I tried to upload an image and was told that the same one had already been deleted. The deletion log explained: "Siebrand deleted File:George V of the United Kingdom - Punch cartoon - Project Gutenberg eText 16113.png (Dupe of Image:A Good Riddance - George V of the United Kingdom cartoon in Punch, 1917.png)". I cannot find the latter file on Commons, however. Has there really been such an image, and where is it now? At least you got an answer. You can feel happy. BTW since the support for CommonsDelinker was getting somehow worser, files are now replaced by the file movers themself if this is automatically possible. This will of course add more patrolling work to the local wikis; but this something Krinkle asked for. Whether one or 29 as threshold, does this really matter?
BTW, there is jira:COMMONSDELINKER-21, but we even don't know whether it is still used and whether it will be removed after the lights for toolserver are switched off.
Finally a big thank you to the operators of CommonsDelinker, a piece of software that shouldn't be a bot due to its importance and of course because it is simply required when you deal with files in MediaWiki. -- Rillke(q?) 19:15, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
With the instability of CommonsDelinker increasing, I expect more and more disturbances in the workings of CD and CDH. Bryan is almost completely out of the picture. Neither I nor Multichill still have a lot of time to look after CD[H], other than updating pywikipediabot code and kicking a process now and then. Because this bot runs on literally all open Wikimedia wikis, we are only open to accepting maintainers that we know. If you know anyone who would want to continue development of CD[H], please let us know. Name change

Concerning User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands. We discussed this a couple times at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems. Would it be possible to change the name of that page to something like User:CommonsDelinker/command requests. That way there would be a talk page at User talk:CommonsDelinker/command requests.. There have been several discussions at COM:AN about the problem. The lack of a talk page for User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands means that stuff gets added and removed from it, and the only communication between the parties is via edit summaries. The edit summaries are oftentimes short, cryptic, incomprehensible, or non-existent. This is causing bad feelings, edit wars, and blocks. Is there a problem with changing the name of the page? I can agree with your recent moving "Category:Stained glass windows of xxx" to "Category:Stained glass windows of xxx". (I noticed this for xxx = "Tetragrammaton".) After all, there are may categories "Staines glass windows", and it is always better to have a distinguishing part at the beginning of the title. This holds for both images and categories. I agree that "Tetragrammaton on stained glass windows" sounds less well grammatically than "The Tetragrammaton on stained glass windows", but here we are talking about titles of images and/or categories. Within running text, the definite article

However, the most non-distinguishing part is the definite article "the" at the biginning. I would prefer to drop that in all category and image names! If someone enters "The so-and-so" into the search window, a list of possible matches is shown, but there are far too many titles starting with "The..." to show them all. As a consequence, titles beginning with a very common but hardly significant word like an article will be much more difficult to find than those without an article!

So, just for "findability", it seems better to avoid all initial "The", "A" and "An"!

A delinker talk page would solve a lot of problems

Siebrand. Human nature being what it is, people are going to go to the first place they see to ask questions and get answers. That is why some people end up here.

I see this note at the top of this talk page: "If you have a question about a specific category renaming, please contact the administrator who initiate the renaming. The administrator can be found in the edit history of User:CommonsDelinker/commands, adding the request shortly before the renaming was done."

That is unrealistic in many cases. Many people aren't that adept at navigating edit histories. Some people don't even know for sure what an edit history is.

But everybody understands what a talk page is. And a delinker talk page serves another purpose too. People learn from other people's mistakes.

People keep making plaintive pleas on Foroa's talk page about category name changes breaking interwiki category links on their various Wikipedias. Sometimes they get pointed to User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands. But that page is a wall of intimidating instructions. Especially for non-native English speakers.

People, myself included, have lots of questions about how to use it. A talk page is where I would start.

Aragon coat of arms change

Hello, are you the operator of CommonsDelinker bot? Could you explain what is the reason for the massive change of File:Escudo_d'Aragón.svg with File:Official_Coat_of_Arms_of_Aragon.svg? The first one is the official representation of the coat of arms and the second is another unofficial heraldic representation. The problem is that the change has been applied massively even in my personal page in Commons (while i'm the author of the first image, but not the second). I noticed these two edits [46] [47] -- both of which changed Category:Citadelle de Québec to Category:Citadelle of Quebec.

Shouldn't the edit summary a bot leaves say why the edit was made, and offer a pointer to the discussion where it was agreed the bot should make the change?

If I had participated in that discussion I would have asked why the change was necessary.

Assuming a policy or discussion backed up changing the name of the category from French to English -- shouldn`t it have gone all the way? Citadel is the English spelling, the bot got that wrong.

A year or so ago I categorized some German boat lifts, which were subsequently recategorized into categories in German. I initiated a discussion over this recategorization, the conclusion of which was that if boat lifts had a specific name, in German speaking regions, the subcategories for those boat lifts in those regions should be named in German.

It seems to me that the conclusion of that discussion and your bots renaming are not in synch. I can abide with either convention, I just think it should be followed everywhere.

Your bot has to stop removing file-links from de.wikibooks. It is fine if the bot changes the file name after it has been renamed. But simply removing the file link equals vandalism. Removing images with a bot account is a problem

Hi Siebrand,

The actions of your User:CommonsDelinker bot do not appear in Special:RecentChanges page, and this is a problem when it remove images without any image to replace it as some wiki templates and pages may be broken: users are not informed about image deletion, so they cannot search for (or import) a replacement picture.

I propose that you use another account (CommonsRemover for example) to remove image from pages (keeping CommonsDelinker for all other actions). This account would not have the bot flag in order to see image deletion in the Special:RecentChanges page by default without having to click on "show bots".
