Trochilidae[edit]

Hello my friend,
You did a wonderful job of disambiguation in Trochilidae here.
But you shouldn't have use the dXX= parameter. It is must simplier to replace "|Sappho" by "|Sappho (Trochilidae)".
Also it is much simplier to maintain (If you insert a genus in the midle, you will have to recalculate tje "|dXX=" parameters.
Cheers Liné1 (talk) 10:41, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are right, hopefully the Genus list won't change. ;-) But the ioc has often updates. We follow them since a while on fr.wikipedia.
Cheers Liné1 (talk) 14:05, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If you use a text editor with line numbers and support for regex search & replace and/or macros, like Notepad++, it's really easy to recalculate the genus numbers (along with doing lots of other tasks, like alphabetizing VNs). Rocket000 (talk) 11:36, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File:Balga, February 2010, Women around the water pump cropped.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Note: The above warning seems to have been bogus. Anon never followed through with an actual nomination for deletion. See User talk:61.155.81.150#File:Balga, February 2010, Women around the water pump cropped.jpg for more information. - dcljr (talk) 09:44, 30 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

Picture of the Year 2013 Results[edit]

The 2013 Picture of the Year. View all results »

Dear Dcljr,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files

  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

Mandelbrot categories[edit]

Hi.

I've just emptied out Category:Mandelbrot sets (zoom), which you created, and moved the images to the new Category:Mandelbrot sets (detail) ... Agreed?

OK

I have thought about creating subcategories with respect to :

  • image type ( static image, series of images, animation, videos)
  • set  : whole set / detail of the set ( = zoom)
  • algorithm ( DEM, ETM, ....)
  • color ( 24 / 8/ 2 bit)
  • part of plane : exterior / boundary / interior
  • map ( quadratic/higher power / ... )

So every image could be categorized using each above subcategory.

Best regards. --Adam majewski (talk) 17:18, 10 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds logical, but I think this needs more discussion. Let's continue this at Category talk:Mandelbrot sets. - dcljr (talk) 03:50, 11 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

RfC on the scope of file renaming criterion 2[edit]

Pursuant to the closing of the RFC "Proposed overhaul of the "Which files should be renamed?" section", a second RfC has been opened at Commons:Requests for comment/File renaming criterion 2 specifically to address the scope of criterion 2, which currently reads "To change from a completely meaningless name to a name that describes what the image displays." Since you participated in the initial discussion, I am notifying you of the follow-up RfC.

Please note that I fully anticipate that the first few days will see a number of additional options proposed, so it may be a good idea to check back periodically on the RfC.

Thank you. Sven Manguard Wha? 01:43, 25 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!
