I saw that you suppressed Category:Arctictis which was a redirect to Category:Arctictis binturong. I don't understand the reason for that.

This is still going on as of 16:50, August 19, and I consider it a serious bug. Note [1], which says "Robot: Moving category Road signs of Germany to Diagrams of road signs of Germany", but is actually moving Category:Free screenshot to Category:Free screenshots. It is a threading issue in pywikipediabot. It does however not lead to any known edit errors. It should be resolved once the pywikipediabot rewrite is done, and the framework is thread safe. Cheers! Siebrand 07:10, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

CommonsDelinker and svg replacements

I guess it is. I'll have to ask Bryan how to insert these, and I will take care of the in the coming week. Btw, you can have SVG relaced by SVG, just nothing from bitmap grapics to SVG. Oh, I'd completely forgotten about the Russia map hitlist. The hitlist I was thinking about was actually User:Lokal Profil/hitlists/Vector-images.com where there are copyrighted raster images to be replaced by free vector images. Questions SieBot Moves

Siebrand, your bot is doing great work. I have a couple of questions.

I noticed that you can use the move from a non-created category to an existing category which is great. The question is concerning the move to a non existing category. Would it be possible that the bot, when moving to a non-existing category that it moves the content of the source category and put it in the newly created category ? (executing in fact an almost complete rename)
We have thousands of images referring to categories in Chinese, russian, Japanse, Indian, ... Can we issue a category remove or "move to non" request ? Thank you. --Foroa (talk) 09:40, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

I think I may have misread the question. Let me reply with a question to get things clear. Which of the following use cases would you like me to perform?
  1. Move the contents of category A to category B, where B does not yet exist

Scenario 1 is a basic scenario on User:CommonsDelinker/commands, so no need to do anything there. Non-sysops can request moves on the talk page. I'm not suggesting it should be blocked, Rocket is. Substituting the template is standard practise for good reason (and I don't see how it would be a waste of resources - on the contrary, it keeps inclusions low so when the template is edited the job queue doesn't explode). It's rather curious that your were unable to verify that at the time, as obviously when I wrote that, only a minute earlier, I was still able to determine that the images clearly did not depict the same scene. However, while my point was that that explanation you now tried to give was what should have been on the original edit(!), I don't mind giving you what information is still available to me so you can work it out for yourself (and prove that explanation wrong):

  • This is the caption on fy:, still there because of the claim that the picture was equivalent:

CommonsDelinker misbehaving at en:wiki

Interesting. I honestly have no idea. CommonsDelinker is not known for making things up, and it is almost impossible to fool it. The only thing I can imagine is that something went wrong in a query it makes to find out which media have been deleted, but there we have the same thing: no delinks if media are still present. Flora of categories vs Plants of categories

The Flora of categories belong to a different tree. Those all end at an Category:Ecozones. Will it be possible to undo those category changes? I put a lot of work into them and well, there were a lot of problems with the Plants of categories -- like states in the United States which had no plants (even after all of that time spent and supermanagement of those Plant categories). Poor Rhode Island, here at commons with no plants!! The Flora of categories were made with different land divisions at the end, divisions chosen by people who are more interested in the enviromental conditions than the political "things". Please, please, undo that merge -- they should be merged the other way or left separate!!! -- carol (talk) 17:55, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

Also "Flora of" is native plants (the subcategorization is at least). I have no idea what the plants of people were doing other than super strong handed management but those categories are not full of native plants. Three main ways a plant exists, Native, Introduced (for plants that grow and spread on their own) and "cultivated". The differences between these three are kind of important to adaptive evolution studies. Okay, the physicist and mathematician in me has some strong doubts about the way they define these things. If some seeds are on your coat (in this case cloth or leather over coat, I assume) and drop onto the ground and grow, it is an introduced species. However, if you are a bird and eat the seeds on one island and "plant" the seeds on another island, that species is "native". Heh. That being said, it is the biologists science and I have been really careful inspite of my doubts of their definitions when making these new categories. I did ask for several categories that were made in 2006 and less than half made (alphabetically they did not get past C, so arguably 1/8 a project that had been abandoned) without talking about it with the creators of them. Removal images Softwell Maker

Commons allows only media with a free license. If the screenshots get a free license from the software manufacturer/copyright owner, they are allowed. two things

Will you write my bot? Commons:COMBotBot, it should create and make uniform genus categories for all named genera so that hotcat.js and kin will have a place to put plant images when they arrive and if the uploader is more thorough than that, it should also put the instructions of how to paste the template to make a uniform species category for the image if that doesn't exist already.

I made a python template for it and I can actually write (in python) the different search and destroy or search and add parts of it but the wiki-stuff that goes in between the python stuff doesn't sound like that much fun to learn, to me. It doesn't need to be written in python.

I really dislike how much the phrase "the assumption of good faith" is being used around here lately -- when it wasn't being used it seemed to just exist. That being said the bot should have the assumption of an upload....

The second thing is a question. If I tell you that there are several ways to divide a sphere, would you have difficulty in understanding that and in knowing that different divisions of any geometric object are interesting to people for different reasons? -- carol (talk) 06:15, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

hello again Siebot owner

Could you make it so that Siebot and everyone else knows what the categories for "Plants of" are supposed to contain before there is a merger between "Flora of" categories and "Plants of" categories?

It is true, I requested that several categories that had been made early in 2007 and in 2006 be emptied into their parent categories. There was however a one to one relationship between them. And the categories ceased alphabetically before the C's had been completed. The merger that is occuring right now is from a very mature tree into a not yet completed tree (see my problem with Rhode Island, for instance) and the relationship between them is not one to one, for example, there is no "Flora of Mexico" as there is a "Plants of Mexico" due the fact that one is a politically divided tree and the other is environmentally divided.

In math class, before graduation (junior high maybe, high school definitely), we had to learn the simple things of set theory and one of those things was one to one relationships. That exists when one member of a set has an exact relationship with another member of a set and no others. This plants merging with flora thing is not one to one.
The User Siebrand is being presented as a person who authored a software that functions here yet my questions have been answered by someone who hasn't written a software to function like Siebot is. Can the author take the wheel for a while? -- carol (talk) 15:13, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

For instance, perhaps an investigation could be made into the reason that there was no Plants of Rhode Island when I was looking at that earlier (like in June, I think) this year. There are many things like that which leave me confused about what the contents of the "Plants of" categories are. Especially as I am certain that these categories are very clearly defined somewhere due to the attention that has been spent on their maintenance for years.

Siebot has the appearance of being well written software but here you said that you do not author software and did not author the bot. There are some technically simple ideas that supercede so many of the fuzzy and needlessly complicated ideas which I would like to express and I honestly believe that discussing this with the author of the software should be no problem. It has nothing to do with more than that and I am a software writer who could probably "fix scripts" and I am not a joke (or I shouldn't have been one) so this should not be perceived as a put down or a knock down but the simplicity of what I have been trying to say.... moving categories

Is moving a bunch of abandoned categories (1/12th made systems abandoned for at least a year) the same thing as moving mature categories that are mostly finished?

Should I take a poll of everyone I saw in the edit history of those plant categories that I requested be moved a few weeks ago and see if they have a complaint or had plans for them? -- carol (talk) 20:05, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

Me either! The categories I moved seemed to be being talked around and never about and no one came to say anything after they were moved. I know not to expect a thank you the same way that I know to expect a "please stop" along with some probably logical information about the reasons to stop (if that person is given a chance to settle down after such a surprise as that could be). I don't vote much here, either. There are a lot of things being voted on all the time that I have not enough understanding of to make a good vote for.

Edit summaries

SieBot's edit summaries seem to have gone a bit weird (although the edits themselves are fine) – see [4] for example. — iridescent 00:27, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

It's a known issue that only happens if SieBot gets categories for processing it cannot complete within 45 seconds. Backlog will get the summary for the job after that, but this edits themselves are OK as you also concluded. Cheers! Siebrand 09:02, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

bot service request

Hi there,

i'd like a bot to perform a repetitive task. I see that you are in charge of User:CommonsDelinker, and i can't figure out how to put my request there, so here goes: i'd like all the "Image:Wuest Tarock *" that belong to both Category:Playing cards and Category:Tarot cards be removed from the "Playing cards" category, in order to unclutter it, since "Tarot cards" is a sub-cat of "Playing cards". I've already done a bunch of'em manually, but i'm getting tired and that's obviously a job for a bot.

Plants of Greenland -> Flora of Greenland

Hello Siebrand, My watchlist just got some +100 entries due to a change from Category:Plants of Greenland to Category:Flora of Greenland on images I have uploaded. I tried to look for the comaand which had led to the move, but I failed to find it. Could you provide me with a link to the edit, which has caused the bot to do these moves. It seems like I have missed an important discussion about naming conventions, or that someone has issued move commands which should not have been done. Yes, why has the move been done? Who has requested it? Where has the discussion taken place? Although I agree it does not make sense to have both categories, it is not clear for me, why the "Flora of..." category should prevail. In the case I mentioned, a well-ordered and consistent category was emptied into a catogory which was basically empty expect for the association of a few species. In a multilingual environment "Plants of.." may be better understood by the majority of users. Also, there is a Category:Plants by country but no Category:Flora by country. For reference I quote the most recent discussion about this topic, which I am aware of: User talk:Foroa#Flora of categories vs Plants of categories, and there are more references in that thread to previous thoughts about this. It has been my experience (from about November 2007 thru perhaps June 2008) that images were strictly not allowed in some but not all of the "Plants of" categories. Any image or subcategory placed within some of those categories would be disembled, or uncategorized and the contents put into a gallery and in that way going into the "Plants of" categories. There seems to be a backlog of conversations of people being angry that their images were managed that way that suggests that the activity had been going on for years. This was only in some of the "Plants of" categories, however. Through my observation and a little reading, it has been very difficult to determine what is the criteria for these categories and as I mentioned earlier that while the tree exists for years there were some gaps in that some areas did not have one. What comes to mind right away are states of United States. I haven't been able to determine what the criteria is for the "Plants of" categories, actually, and requests for information about it seem to trigger aggressive bot moves or dramatic human disembling categories and well, things seem kind of sad about this. Perhaps if those "Plants of" categories get maintained the same way for a few years more, the maintainers of them will be able to articulate what it is that they are exactly without the whatevers that occur now when asked.
Flora of have image map navigation, it is cool and it is also useful (or would have been back when I was researching plants and where they were native to). I think it would have been really something if I had come here looking for images and found all of that. I can honestly say that while making the navigation and putting all those areas together, I am even more interested in seeing the rest of this world -- it seems beautiful to look at when I started to look at it in larger chunks that then got a little smaller. -- carol 20:03, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
Category:Flora of Greenland has no image map navigation. You have to go two levels up in the Flora of ecozone hierarchy until you find a clickable map. Back to my question. If I may, I'll try to share an outsider's view (and also speak up for Siebrand). Before this whole thing got started, there was no difference between "Flora" and "Plants" to me. Of course, it's never good to be inconsistent with naming schemes, so the logical choice is to rename one or the other. Following that logic further, the obvious choice (at least at the time) is to go with the more commonly understood "Plants". Also, one look at Category:Plants by country and you'll instantly see what the majority are called. I would say that practically everyone (who's not directly involved) would not see anything controversial about making those renames. I almost did the first batch myself. Guess what happens when you perform a task like this and someone who's extremely active in this area comes to you and says you made a mistake? Well, you believe them. After all, it is their area and they would know better than someone that hardly ever ventures out that way. So no blame goes to the admin(s) that handled the requests unless they were aware of the controversial nature of the moves beforehand.

As for this discussion here, I think it would be better if all you guys start out and write some kind of documentation/guideline for the naming of these categories. Like I said before, the requests sat there for awhile and no one said anything. What are we supposed to do? Sit there and watch the backlog grow? Us non-specialists need something to go on, and you specialists need a place to argue work things out. Or else things like this will continue to happen. If you're worry about a lack of interest/discussion, be bold. That always gets people talking.

And if I was Siebrand, I would keep it a secret I maintained the category rename bot. Unless it's a technical issue, he really has nothing to do with it (unless he gave the commands himself, of course). Rocket000(talk) 06:43, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

I tried to get a clarification, and all people agree that flora and plants is pretty much the same but maybe a little different. Despite my repeated questions, nobody documented the precise meaning (or difference). Because there is no formal documentation on those categories nor central discussion place, the problem dragged on and on, If you want to maintain a system in a decent state, you cannot live with a double naming/category system. I don't know what caused the move, and frankly, I don't care because at least, now, there is one major problem gone and we don't run around around in circles anymore. I should like to see the attempts that you made to get the clarification -- I suspect that the authors of the "Flora of" categories were shy to answer your questions. Unfortunately my attempts have failed, and I agree the meaningless coexistence of both categories just had to stop at some point. Category:Plants of Catalonia had only photos of plants taken in Catalonia. Category:Flora of Catalonia should include native plants of Catalonia (maybe photographed anywhere). It's different.

Thank you for understanding that. My intentions were (as motivated by the least amount of maintenance first) that subcategories of "Flora of" should be native species (the same thing with Fauna and Geography although, the second is not so difficult to understand) and images that were put there could be plants that were growing at that location. I did not start to make species categories for plants until I started to author articles about them. I categorized many images including plants and I do not think that I made subcategories while accomplishing that task. If it is wrong to assume that this is typical behavior here, it should be good to communicate that to me on my talk page or here if Siebrand doesn't mind. -- carol 12:48, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

It is good that the categories have been merged.

There has been some talk of sub-categories but none of the "Flora..." categories I've come across have any. Just to be clear and borrowing from w:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flora, should there potentially be sub-categories for:

  • Native flora of .... The native and indigenous plants of an area.
  • Agricultural and garden flora of .... The plants that are deliberately grown by humans.
  • Introduced flora of .... Plants that are not indigenous to a given location but instead have been accidentally or deliberately introduced to the location by human activity or by natural means.

Also:

  • Is this the correct set of sub-categories?
  • Are they correctly named?
  • Should there be others?

It would be good to really bottom this out so we can document it for the benefit of all.

What is the criteria for the "Plants of" categories? I am so curious what could be the logic that has made them the way that they are. Some filled only with galleries, some non-existent, some with no galleries but only single images. (To not just suggest the merge but to have confidently gone ahead and did this merge and then to demand an explanation to the undoing and to demand that the research be done for you is an impressive display that seems to fit the understanding of the logic that holds English wikipedia together? I am guessing about the logic here as well.) Explain what you knew to be the criteria that makes the "Plants of" categories and how you knew without me telling you that they could merge and also one other little question. Personally, I think that it might be more interesting to use names in the sense of "Flora of San Serriffe", "Flora of San Serriffe, native", "Flora of San Serriffe, introduced", "Flora of San Serriffe, cultivated" as people search in the first place to the beginning of a category name, so should give less trouble with HotCat. moving categories to non-English names

did you move these English categories to non-English names [5]? My understanding of Commons:Language policy on categories states that they be used in English. My understanding is that English be used for categories, native language for articles (which seems like a fair compromise). If we start using native names for categories, how is anyone who does not happen to speak French for example supposed to find it? I speak some French but how am I supposed to know that Category:Cathédrale Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Vaast d'Arras is the same as "Arras Cathedral"[7]? You misunderstood me, Gryffindor, I am neither pleading for Arras Cathedral nor for Cathédrale Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Vaast d'Arras. I can live with both and there are pro and cons for both variants. The important point is that we need to find a broad consensus that covers at least all French cathedrals. In the moment, all categories within Category:Cathedrals in France use the French name. Oh well, that happens. I am quite used to a lot of traffic on my talk page, especially on days that I have SieBot make 15.000 or so edits. My 2 cents: I do not support a "French only" solution. I guess the only workable solution is (again, and yes, optimal, but not the best ever solution - think other scripts than Latin for example) to always use a category name in English, even if something has a proper name in a different script or language. I agree with that but take for example the category of Chartres Cathedral which has been moved multiple times already back and forth (from Category:Cathedral of Chartres over Category:Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres to Category:Chartres Cathedral and finally back to Category:Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres). Dear Siebrand, if we could keep it simple and you clearly state when you are relaying inaccurate information about yourself so that me and everyone else will know when wrong information is being relayed about abilities. The exchange we had on August 28, just a few days ago, on this talk page suggests that you should not be suffering right now from feelings of a personal attack. Is the message now, four days later that you can author software? Please understand, I have been honest and forthright most of my days. The few untruths I have told became 1) too complicated to keep and 2) not as interesting as the truth.
I have a strong feeling that there are several very good projects available here at the commons and the insistance of some to take existing and not abandoned projects is kind of a sad thing for the way that humans interact. Anonymity is not so strong of a suit, in my opinion. Especially when the overtakers have displayed that they are not able to understand simple things like the lack of a one to one relationship between the sets nor the ability to ask. This is not a project manager, this is (my opinion) a broken person.
The last two or three years (and this is the truth) I count footsteps as I literally take a step. The feeling of the invasion of my privacy is strong; the counting makes it uninteresting perhaps. I have one blessing and that is my name and decades of the mostly completely honest attempts to communicate with people in real life and online.
So, I have counted to one, thank you for the advice, it was a good suggestion. Perhaps this same suggestion can be given to others (who probably have more things than just their name since they were so protective not to use their real names) and keep counting until they can display an ability and willingness to communicate and an ability to understand simple things like sets of things which are not equal. Serious delinker/dupes tools issue

This is new. I have run several dozens images through the delinker 2-3 times and while delinker acts like it's processed them, they don't actually get delinked. For one thing, the "universally replaced" tag doesn't show up. This is a big issue. Please advise. I'm not submitting more to delinker til you tell me this is fixed. I agree we should have "Coins of France" cat vice "French coins" but things like "(Moving from United States Air Force to Air force of the United States (following category redirect))" (and Army of the United States vice United States Army) are just silly. It is a misapplication of the policy. The reason is that the organizations are actually named "United States Air Force" and "United States Army", therein lies the difference. In general, all "Plants of <Country>" categories used to be categorised in:

  1. Category:Plants by country|<country>
  2. Category:Nature of <country>
  3. Category:Flora of <region>| <<country>

During the recent move to "Flora..." (and the several that preceded it), many have lost their link to 1. Would it be possible for SieBot to check all "Flora of <Country>" categories and restore links to 1 and 2 if missing.

Once this is done it, would be a tedious but relatively simple task to manually work through "Category:Plants by country" to check for and restore links to 3 (which are also missing in some cases eg Japan, now manually restored).

(tab reset) Apologies if it sounded as though I'm accusing the bot, I'm not, hence the "(and the several that preceded it)". It is definitely the case that somehow or other most of the countries of the Caribbean lost their categorisation to Category:Plants by country and some also lost it to Category:Flora of the Caribbean (which was previously Category:Plants of the Caribbean). I'm certain of this because they were there when checked recently yet I had to restored them manually last night. However, there were various moves and restores going on prior to the bot's involvement and it may well have been these that caused the problem. To be honest, it doesn't seem worth spending time to investigate any further.

With regard to what's required, you could look at Category:Flora of Jamaica and Category:Flora of Japanfor examples.

To try to clarify, and using the numbering above:

  1. If you look in Category:Plants by country you'll notice that what used to be a category well populated with "Plants of ..." subcategories now has only a few "Flora of ..." subcategories, many being those that I restored yesterday. I guess that what's required is for every "Flora of ..." category to contain [[Category:Plants by country|<country name>]] where <country name> is derived as described at * below.
  2. According to Commons:Category_scheme_countries_and_subdivisions#Nature, each "Flora of ...>" categories should be categorised in its respective "Category:Nature of <country>". In other words it should contain [[Category:Nature of <country name>]].
  3. This is a regional categorisation that the bot almost certainly can't directly help with (I included it only for completeness), but once it has done number 1 there will exist in Category:Plants by country a complete list of "Flora of ..." subcategories which I can work through manually.

* In writing all this I've been assuming that SieBot has sufficient string manipulation capabilities to be able to work through all categories starting with "Flora of " and within each, obtain the page name and trim the "Flora of " bit off (or "Flora of the " occasionally) leaving it with just the country name to be used in building category names and sort criteria. Is that correct?

But as soon as I read something about a content mistake about a bot in a comment, I request detailed information about it immediately, because if there is an issue, it needs to be identified asap. More into detail: Category:Flora of Jamaica and Category:Flora of Japan: check the history of those cats. For Jamaica it was removed by an anonymous, Japan never had it.
Then on to Plant by country: the contents of that category should be moved to Flora by country, and the former should get a {{Seecat}}.

Thanks to the bot and owner for the "Flora of ..." work. "Category:Flora by country" looks well populated now.
For the record, while it is true that Category:Flora of Japan has never contained Category:Plants by country, Category:Plants of Japan most certainly did, and other categories too. I guess I would have expected these to be transferred as part of a cat move. Presumably there are reasons why that can't happen.
Will talk to Multichill about the other questions as you suggest. Thanks for the pointer.

Ah, right. I get it :) Categories are not merged when category contents are moved to a category for which a page already exists. That is indeed a possible omission in the bot code, but can also be seen as a feature: the assumption being that the new category is at least as well, or better organised, than the old category. It's probably a case of "damned if you do and damned if you don't" but in the cases I've been involved in it would, on balance, have been better if the bot had moved the categories categories. Reason: it's easier to (a) remove or correct excess/misnamed categories than to (b) hunt down those that have been lost. aircraft categories needed

Hi, I need a Super-Category for my new Categories:

Maybe I should create Category:Special use aircrafts as a subcategory of Category:Aircraft. And make Category:Crop dusters and Category:Banner towing subcategories of Category:Special use aircrafts. What do you think? Or who can I ask in Commons? I've unblocked the bot. First, it worked exactly as it should, the problem was caused by a human error. Second, it had already finished with the unlinking. Siebrand, is there a way to instruct the bot to undo its changes, where they haven't been undone already? This might have affected more Wikipedias than just en and fr. Also cool would be a check whether the image has been restored at the Commons in the meantime before actually unlinking. Crap. And here I thought after 40 minutes on inactivity it'd be safe to unblock. Sorry guys. Siebrand, it really seems that a "restoration check before unlinking" is desperately needed. Commons admins can cause such problems, they should also have some guarantee that when they restore an image, no further delinkings will occur. I also think the bot needs a command that makes it try to undo all its changes for a particular image, and report to the person who had entered that command any pages on which an undo failed/was not possible. Common delinker question

I got a random question about it.

Some images are deleted but can be either:

  • restored when the issue is fixed (OTRS or the missing information fixed.)
  • transferred to the local wikis were the image were used.

The problem is that the images are already delinked, so the linking must be done again. I don't know if commonsdelinker is able to revert the step, I assume that technically it could do it if the versions were not modified since. (by reverting itself.) (I actually don't know if the command exists or is implemented.) Could a link to the commands that are needed to revert the unlink be added in the talk page of each deleted images? If it is not possible could the talk page list the place and revision where the images were used, so someone can do manually the merge?

CommonsDelinker errors

CD does not make fauly edits. Administrators make errors, and CD acts on administrative actions, good and bad. If the bad is not fixed within 10 minutes of deletion, CD *will* unlink. Commons Delinker complaint

Instead of removing the picture from the article, in this diff Commons Delinker replaced the King's name by another King's name, enabling the mistake between the two kings to be perpetuated. If you check the diff little closer, I think you will agree with me that you have a better target to aim your complaint at: the admin that gave the replace command. I just want to ask if something has changed since the last time. Looks as if it would be still on the todo-list. A {{universal remove}} would be very usefull for Trichome-close-up.jpg. It is used on some wikipedia sides, but it should be deleted, because: Summary is "from en:Wikipedia"; The log on wikipedia tells me that the image was removed by Nv8200p because it was tagged with {{Pui}}. The uploader wrote "from overgrow.com" as comment. So I think that this image is a copyvio and should get deleted even it's a nice picture.

Commonsdelinker bug

Deleting instead of replacing

Hi Siebrand! I have written a notice on m:User talk:CommonsDelinker aswell, but it's perhaps easier to talk here.

This request by User:EPO made commonsdelinker delete the image totally in 4 pages in swedish wikipedia, and at least one deletion in af.wp! The reasons for theese deletions were unused duplicate(?) removing reference to deleted duplicate

Another problem is that CommonsDelinker doesn't work everytime. (For example: Whitewidow.jpg was a duplicate of White widow.jpg which was in use on several pages on en.wiki (including :en:White Widow (cannabis)). I told ComDelinker two times to replace it 1, 2. Today I told ComDelinker replaced it again.
For some reason ComDelinker didn't remove the image even it was deleted days ago. ???
@ Siebrand: Shouldn't it be enough if I check the usage as long as today's changes aren't displayed? Maybe there should be something like {{universal del-replace|||reason=}} which deletes all images which were universally replaced.

Problem with deleted image

A bot has deleted the image File:Kortrijk 30 Leiestraat.jpg. This image represented a statute of the fictional charater Lucky Luke. The bot claimed the image did not complied with the FOP criterion. I do not mind if it is true or not. I only want to upload again the image in the English encyclopedia, where I am sure that the image will not be deleted, for even if the image is judged non-free, I can at least add a FUR. The problem is that the original uploader of the image is not me, I do not know who uploaded it, I do not have any version of the image. Can you tell me who is the uploader, or restaure the image only to copy it ? It is very important, because free images for comics are extremely rare, because any works by the comics authors are copyrighted, so that the only free images are those representing statutes, wall paintings and objects., and we lack them. Two different persons claim to be author

Hallo Siebrand, the image on Commons Image:Ph-bas.gif is similar to the image on the nl-wiki nl:Afbeelding:Vlag Fil Basilan.gif. On Commons user Jjarivera claims to be the author, on the nl-wiki Jaume Ollé is mentioned as author. Stange! Since the image on the nl-wiki is part of a big group, I guess Ollé is the real author. The svg replacements

HI

I've now gone through the png -> svg replacements made by Commons delinker and found that it missed a bunch of them. I've seen from [21] that they were added and I can't seem to find a trend to why these particular ones should have caused trouble. Anyhow the ones that were missed can be seen in User:Lokal Profil/hitlists/Vector-images.com#Batch_2. Worst case I can replace them by hand but it would still be nice to figure out howcome CD missed them.

You deleted the image (log) as a duplicate of Image:Amphitheatrum sapientiae aeternae - Alchemist's Laboratory.jpg in June, but I'm not sure if the image was actually a bit-for-bit identical. This move has been done during the category naming harmonisation process of "Churches of xxx" (a few hundreds) to "Churches in xxx" (a few thousands). Churches in Gotland is coherent with Buildings in Gotland, Open air museums in Gotland and Buildings in Visby. So far, the two cats "churches on xxx" remain untouched I think (I am not the driver here). Well, I can't help feeling that "in Gotland" looks rather ugly, and the existence of more categories using that preposition doesn't really make me feel better about it. "Gotland" on its own is always preceded by the preposition "på" (on) in Swedish. (To use "in" one would need to specify what unit one is talking about.) Using "of" is an acceptable alternative to take the small island of Fårö into account. This is not the place to discuss it. I would suggest to insert the necessary {{Move|New cat name}} in the concerned categories. I would suggest to use the proposition "on" for all the Islands, as it fits better with your language and the use on other Islands. Alternatively, you could issue a COM:CFD as to discuss the generalisation for all Islands. Question is, if we have a special rule for Islands, we don't have to have the word Island in the category names as there are hundreds of Islands allover the world and for Gotland, you need to do a subtsantial amount of clicking and reading before you know that one of the meanings could be an Island. (I for one, I did not know that Gotland means equally a Swedish Island, despite the fact that I have family in Sweden). van Gogh sub-categories

Hi Siebrand, Siebot moved some categories recently which I had called "works" into "paintings". My English being less than perfect, I however want to declare that there are by far more drawings and mixed media left by this artist than just the renowned paintings. Let's come to the point:

  1. Almost all the renames Siebot did, are OK, as the objects are paintings.
  2. vGogh left by far more drawings and mixed media than paintings. Question: Would Category:Drawings and mixed media by van Gogh in the X museum be an adequate CAT name? Or what else would you propose? (I called it "works", because I did not see much use in such splitting, as far as museum-subcategories are concerned, but admittedly I was wrong on the syntax).
  3. I totally disagree with Gryffindor's approach to file names, by faintingly continuing the Yorck project name-giving, which is just numbering (counting) the pieces added -- which ist totally arbitrary, whilst unique identifiers do exist for the vG oeuvre. In case you'd be willing to comment on this, I'd try to make myself as clear as ever possible (i.e., put adequate questions which you might answer at relatively little expense).

Or, how about another proposal: Just to rename "Paintings by vG in the X museum" to "Artwork by" or similar, as it would be too much of an effort, imo, to create precise sub-cats just for those museum subcats, and afterwards create a "paternal" category like thisone: In many cases, the subcats would not contain but few items.

CommonsDelinker misbehaviour

Hello Siebrand. Although CommonsDelinker is in fact a good tool to keep things up to date, I feel it's not working most effectively in the way it is applied now. If not watching carefully ones articles, you see sooner or later an article irreparable damaged. A specimen of that is our article stq:Wikselsponnenge. The text of that article thoughout refers (with a, b, c, x) to an image which has disappeared. The bad thing is, that you are not alarmed when superficially scanning your articles, because CommonsDelinker removed the reference to that image. Still worse is, that it also removed the text we added to the image, which sometimes constitutes an essential part of the article.
I would propose another system, in which each Wikipedia gets a message page, in which you can see whether images are removed to which it is linking, together with the concerning pagenames. In that way the author(s) of an article can repair it in the best way, using the data from the old link. --Pyt (talk) 11:56, 24 November 2008 (UTC)--

System corruption ?

Any idea why Category:Archaeological sites in Pakistan is filled up with 111 images that seem not to belong to this category ? Is there any command to reset/rebuild a category as the duplicate and speedy delete categories have quite often corrupted counters. --Foroa (talk) 09:34, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

interesting! I did some experimenting and "action=purge" does not work. Only thing that appears to work is make a null edit to all current category members, and then purge the category. Not really something you will look forward to doing. This is something you could post on wikitech-l. Maybe all categories on Commons can be rebuilt somehow, as this is almost certainly not the only messed-up category. Siebrand 17:52, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
The cause of this was this edit. It was reverted, but it takes some time for the job queue to update all pages using the templates. If the changes had to be done faster, null edits (manually or by bot) was probably the only option. Category counters are updated when adding or removing a page in a category. That will onl add or subtract 1 from the counter, so if it was already wrong the updated count will still be wrong. Incorrect category counts are only fixwd when viewing a category with less than 200 members with a incorrect count, or if a system administrator runs a maintenance script on the server to update counts for all categories. /Ö 21:56, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Siebrand, you misunderstood: Siga has already uploded a correctly named duplicate, so he should use {{Badname}}.

(1) S. Kommentar oberhalb, beschrifte das zu löschende Duplikat mittels {{Badname}} (ist imo selbsterklärend).
(2) Es gibt ein Template {{Rename}}, das die Arbeit des Neu-Uploads+Löschen bestehender Links etc quasi per Bot ablaufen lässt. Allerdings solltest Du ein "trusted user" sein um es zu nutzen, ansonsten müsste
a) ein trusted user Deinen Änderungsvorschlag erst bestätigen, damit der Bot ihn behandelt, und in jedem Fall

Uuups: Missverstehen kann man einander auch auf Deutsch ;). Da Du "Nutzung geändert" schriebst, habe ich den Rest schlampig gelesen. Um {{Badname}} zu nutzen, muss die Kopie mit dem richtigen Namen vorher hochgeladen sein. Dann ist das "Badname" meist binnen Stunden oder Minuten weg (der nächstbeste Admin braucht bloß ein Knöpfchen zu drücken). Da ich aber zu faul war, das Tierchen runter- und hochzuladen, hab' ich doch den Rename angeleiert, der je nach Bot-Aktivität tagelang braucht. Aber nächstes Mal weißt Du hoffentlich Bescheid. Substitution of Image:BSicon TBHFu.svg-like

Hi,

The Image:BSicon TBHFu.svg-like images are used in models that take a %%%% label as parameter and display Image:BSicon %%%%.svg - a computed link. Thus, when the following line is met: 

universal replace|BSicon BHFu.svg|BSicon TBHFu.svg|reason=(incorrectly named) duplicate

What is really meant is that the label BHFu should be replaced by TBHFu in all its occurrences. It should be identified as a label, with no alphanumerals before or after, because a label may be used as substring in another label. Usually it is simply preceded and followed by "|" or blank spaces, but special cases may be tricky.

Since the 'bot can't do it the correction has to be done by hand, and this is very tedious and risky. And the reference in de:Wikipedia:Formatvorlage Bahnstrecke changes from time to time, leading to duplicates that nobody wants to orphan.

Could you please program the 'bot so that it can understand that situation?

Could you instruct it to switch Category:Locator maps of cities in Ohio to Category:Locator maps of villages in Ohio for all files that depict Ohio place articles that are (on the English Wikipedia) categorised as villages? Have you considered working on Siebot so that its edit summaries would actually reflect what it's doing? It's a little disturbing when I look through my watchlist and a photo of a Tibetan singer has a comment that it's been placed in a category about churches in Norway. Die damals willkürlichen Unterkategorien zu „Military of Germany“ wurden im November 2007 von mir sinnvoll geordnet, siehe Category talk:Military of Germany. Eine Neuorganisation durch Sie ohne entsprechende Diskussion halte ich – gelinde gesagt – nicht für „wikilike“!

In der Kategorie „Military of Germany“, die das Militär Deutschlands unabhängig von der Zeit umfasst, gab es sinnvollerweise und logisch die (zeitliche) Unterkategorie „Alte Heere vor 1918“. Wenn Sie diese Unterkategorie als „Military of the German Empire“ in die Kategorie „Military history of Germany“ verschieben, müssen Sie es aber auch sachlich richtig machen. „Alte Heere vor 1918“ ist zeitlich umfangreicher (ohne Beginn bis 1918) als nur das Kaiserreich (German Empire) ab 1871!! Selbst wenn Sie das „Heilige Römische Reich Deutscher Nation“, das in Deutschland nicht als Kaiserreich bezeichnet wird, darunter subsummieren, dann fehlt die Zeit von 1804 bis 1870! Insofern ist die von Ihnen angelegte Unterkategorie „Deutsches Heer“ = „Alle alten deutschen Heere vor 1919“ in der Kategorie „Military of the German Empire“ zweifach sachlich falsch: 1. gab es vor 1919 kein deutsches Heer (1871 – 1919 ein preußisches, sächsische, bayerisches und württembergisches Heer, davor noch mehr deutsche Staaten mit eigenen selbständigen Heeren und dazu noch vor 1804 ein Reichsheer), 2. gehörten die Heere vor 1870 nicht zum Kaiserreich, da dieses noch gar nicht bestand!

Delinker: Universal replace of a to be deleted PNG by a SVG

Hi Siebrand, I would like to close this DR by deleting this PNG image because of its unclear copyright status. I hesitate, however, a little bit because this image is used on 52 pages in 20 projects. The best approach, I think, would be the universal replacement of this image by this SVG. This proposal was already supported and implemented by the experts on fr-wp. I intended to ask the delinker to do the same for the remaining projects. I found, however, following notice:

Note: To avoid World War III, CommonsDelinker will ignore a command to rename an image if the new image is svg and the original is not.

Can i ask you why your bot has renamed Category:Bulk carriers to Category:Bulk carriers (ships)? I do not think the brackets are necessary, i don't know anything else than ships called "bulk carriers" (there are indeed some freight trucks / train carriages designed for bulk loading but they are not called this way). The category name is less intuitive now. Can you explain why this renaming took place ?

Well, practice is also to avoid unnecessary over-precision. If it isn't broken, then don't fix it. I really do not understand this renaming. People who will place images in this category are those who have an idea of what a bulk carrier is. When you google around (for example for "bulk carriers" trucks), you will see that there is a whole industry around bulk carriers (cranes, trucks, material handling, companies, statistics, ...) so that category:bulk carriers will overtime become the top category again with the Bulk carriers (ships) as a subcategory. --Foroa (talk) 19:16, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
Fair enough. However the key word here is "over time". Don't anticipate too much on categories / articles which may be created "over time" as they may, in fact, take years to appear, and in the meantime bother everybody else who is looking for the category / article. If someone had edited the page, I would not have noticed the removal of the image. SieBot and its moving mistakes

1) SieBot in the tens of cases returned a previous change as here. It is necessary to use such sequence of procedure steps, that first the whole moving of one category is finished and the moving of the next can be started after it.

2) Until the correction of commons-links at wikipedias is assured, it is necessary to keep the old categories and to put the template {{Seecat}} into each of them. Until all links from wikipedias are corrected, the old categories wouldn't be deleted (and wouldn't remain without {{Seecat}}).

The problem seems to occur when two parallel threads do (almost) simultaneous moves on the same file (this occurs since the problem of the wrong summary edit in the move Siebot has been corrected). It looks as if the move instructions are not atomic or not interlocked.
I am very much against all these seecats all over the place for many reasons as in the end, it will make HotCat completely unusable and train people with the wrong names. I would suggest to delete all source categories by default but leaving in the edit summary and deletion log a text "moved to category:destination" (as is done when a category with a move request has been moved). Multichill promised that his bot would pickup this edit summary and automatically adapt the Commonscats templates in the various wikipedias. --Foroa (talk) 20:02, 13 March 2009 (UTC)


HotCat can work with "seecat" categories, as far as I know. If an user choose any category, HotCat insert the goal category into the page, not the choosen old category. Thus many of kept "seecat" categories can make our work easier. (Now I don't mean the set of movings mentioned above.)

But there is very more serious problem here. There are many category changes made through CommonsDelinker page and very easily now, but nobody allows for keeping of links from wikipedias. So I tell: the old categories should not be deleted until all links from wikipedias are corrected. If some bot will change the links from all wikipedias within a minute, the old category can by deleted in the next minute. If nobody will change the links from wikipedias, the old categories should be kept until this problem will be solved systematically. --ŠJů (talk) 00:27, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Hotcat gets saturated and non-functional when there are too many cats with similar names. Moreover, it trains the people with wrong names and prefixes, so because for example, too many "people of xxx" categories exist, people create over and obver again "people from xxx" categories because they think that this is the rule. There are hundreds of wikipedias using commons and hundreds of other consuming sites, so waiting till all links are changed is not realistic at all. They just should not link to categories but to commons galleries with the same names as their articles.
