Removing John Leavitt gravestone photo on Suffield, Connecticut

I'm not really sure how the Commons works, but I repeatedly entered information on this subject but never received a response. And after awhile was told that I couldn't enter information because I had been blocked. After awhile, I was just scratching my head. I posted a query on my user page, but no one ever answered that either. The two photos I uploaded, as I attempted to explain, were both taken by a cousin for her personal use. She emailed them to me and said I could use them for whatever purpose I chose. I cannot see where that violates any copyright whatsoever. In any case, could someone please explain to me how the Commons works; why the two photos were removed; how one goes about getting a response to questions on the Commons; and how I can go about posting photos in the future without a problem? Many thanks for your help.MarmadukePercy 06:24, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

I have addressed this issue repeatedly but never heard back from a soul.MarmadukePercy 01:49, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Sorry about the wrong link. It was supposed to be a duplicate of Image:Bill_Gates_at_CES_2007_(350043329).jpg. Either of them can be deleted, but the first one is not used anywhere. --Kimse 21:07, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

About that translate me bit... here's the translation in Macedonian:

ENG:The file Image:COA_of_Greece.svg has been replaced by Image:Coat_of_arms_of_Greece.svg by administrator commons:User:Siebrand: Was in category "Duplicate", exact duplicate. Translate me!

Admin on mk.wiki

Dear Siebrand, you may wish to add link to Betawiki for translation of Delinker summary. I think there this is possible. --Kaustubh (Talk) 04:18, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
CommonsDelinker uses local messages, you may have read on meta. The message above should be added you a page in the CommonsDelinker user namespace, where it will then be added as a edit summary. I cannot do anything with it, this should be dealt with locally... I'll discuss with Bryan if he feels for centralised editing messages. Cheers! Siebrand 08:10, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

Universal replace of Image:Helium-Neon Laser.jpg

Hi. This strikes me as a bad practice, since you have universally replaced an image with a descriptive name (that was stating which type of laser it was) by one with an undescriptive name merely modified from the automatic naming by the camera. guillom 14:10, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

CommonsDelinker behavior

Hi, I noticed this edit. It is not so fortunate as it removes an entry from the list of historic Valued images candidates. Is there a way I can avoid such edits happening in the future? -- Slaunger 09:15, 25 April 2008 (UTC) And this is not so good either replacing image= with the dupe name would work, but now the VIC is just useless. -- Slaunger 09:18, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

Nothing that can be done, really... Best correct/rename media links to the new status. Cheers! Siebrand 09:59, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
OK, that is a pity as in some cases the bot has removed a subpage name, which happens to be identical to a now invalid image name. It seems rather farfetched to go through a rename of a subpage just becuase an image of that name has been removed (by default the image name and subpage name are identical, but the image name can be replaced later if a dupe case occurs like this, but it is very unconvenient to rename the subpage and have it removed by the bot in such cases).
If I reinsert the subpage name, will it then be removed by the bot again, or is it a one time run for this image replacement? -- Slaunger 21:04, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
After the image had been replaced, and the to be deleted dupe has been orphaned, the orphan is deleted. So nothing will happen after that... Siebrand 21:26, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
And Siebot cannot be programmed to take exception from replacements when the image name follows the string "subpage=" in a template? What it did here is really annoying as the removal of the subpage parameter breaks the link from COM:VIC candidates to each individual review page. If this is not possible, can it then be setup to ignore certain namespaces or image pages (like COM:VIC, where I had to go mend the subpage link it removed in a template)? -- Slaunger 19:59, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

dubbele afbeelding

Groet, Siebrand 20:26, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Request about delinking bot

Please don't set it automatically to make minor edits; people who maintain articles need to see on their watchlist that a major layout change has just taken place. --Relata refero (disp.) 08:52, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, I am not certain I agree with your idea; I will discuss this with my co-maintainer. Cheers! Siebrand 11:35, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi, how do you decide which version of duplicates to keep? In this case the filename might be better in one, but the file information and particularly the categories were much, much better in the other. You decided to keep the better file name. Would you have transfered the description and the categories to the kept version? I just did it, so there is no harm done, but please take care that meta information such as descriptions and categories don't get lost by sorting out duplicates. greetings --h-stt !? 10:54, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

This is a job the dupe taggers have to take care of... I may notice these issues orphaning and deleting files, or I may not. If the taggers do a lousy job, I'm sure I will not be able to catch everything they let through. Just let me know if you think something needs a second closer look, or 'so fix it' if you are still able to. Cheers! Siebrand 11:33, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the answer, but obviously many if not most of those who tag duplicates don't look for these information. So I believe, you should take a look for potential loss of meta information. I know this slows down the process, but I would hate to see categories get lost, they are the prime method to prevent chaos and find images. greetings --h-stt !? 11:44, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Renaming

Why do you think, this Name would be better than this Name? Before the renaming there was a title everybody knows, what was to find there. Now we have a Name, who is not only bad, it also false ( a bobsled isn't a luge). Marcus Cyron 16:17, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

It's always the wrong name... Cheers! Siebrand 18:26, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
Great answer, thanks. It's too hard to accept, if you made a mistake? The problem isn't to make mistakes. The problem is your arrogant habit. You work so much here, it's normal to make mistakes. But if someone tell you about that, you only answer in that way. I understand now: Siebrand never made a mistake. I will remember. Marcus Cyron 10:35, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
No idea how you are drawing these conclusions... Siebrand 10:38, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Wrong image showing up

Hi, here CommonsDelinker replaced an image with a similar one. In fact Image:Friedrich.jpg didn't show up, but de:Bild:Friedrich.jpg instead, which shows a different person. What to do?--Sitacuisses 17:51, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Interesting... That should not happen. Maybe it happened because the file on de.wp has been there this long and some metadata is missing (uploaded in 2003). Best strategy would be to upload the file from de.wp to Commons under another name, and fix the references on de.wp where needed. Sorry this happended; it shouldn't have... Cheers! Siebrand 18:29, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
OK, I hope someone else looks after it. A quick glance at the instructions for moving images from .de to commons gives me the impression that I need to consult a lawyer before I start... --Sitacuisses 21:06, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

"bad name" cleanup

Thanks for cleaning up a a large number of my uploads from last half a year with "bad name" tag. --Jarekt 18:30, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

No problem. Just try to upload them under a proper name the first time in the future :) Cheers! Siebrand 18:31, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
I always try but in about 5-10% of uploads I mess up. Main reasons are: forgetting to change from original file name and inconsistency between upload tools (upload screen, Commonshelper, Commonplace, etc.) about need for or handling of namespace and extensions, like "Image:name.ext" . Some of them need the Image: and/or .ext parts and some want to put them themselves. If you get them wrong you get things like "Image:Image name.jpg.jpg" or "Image:name" (with no extension). Once I remember which form goes with which tool I will do much better. Cheers! --Jarekt 14:37, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Removing images that are duplicates

This edit strikes me as odd; not only does it leave a broken template there, but it was also unnecessary as the reference to the old image could simply have been replaced by one to the new image. Stannered 22:43, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

As you can see, I was *not* the deleting admin. Please ask him. Cheers! Siebrand 22:59, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Wybunbury Tower

Hi -- you removed several images of Wybunbury tower sourced from Geograph as duplicates. Hi Siebrand

Wie have a small problem. Why did you replace the Image:Nuremberg chronicles f 098v99r 1.png by Image:Nuremberg chronicles - VIENNA.png all pictures uploaded by the user schedel are konsequently named bey the pages of the book nuremberg chronikles. Therefore it may a big fault do destroy this order of a big set of pictures. Please Correct it, and keep this information for the future. -- Joergens.mi 12:20, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

You can fix it yourself by swapping the dupe tags. Usually for series of images there is some template description. I'll fix it if you haven't in a few hours or so... By the way, there are still duplicate pages in other publications. Do you want me to report them to you so you can fix them? Cheers! Siebrand 13:17, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Thank's that is a great idea, put it on my discussion page. Especiallay when german language texts/pictures are concerned. The best place will be User_talk:Joergens.mi#To_do. And yes I know that there is still one open item :). Even curiosities caused by the User GerWsUpload shall be reported there.

Thank you for fixing. --Joergens.mi 15:06, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Update afbeelding

Groet, Siebrand 14:43, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Hello, first of all sorry for my english, I'm not an english speaker. I noticed that:

I think that the algorythm that uses the bot is doing something wrong. I mean that the new image that was erased and replaced by this image was well categorized, and the older version was not categorized at all.

Hello, I saw you delete File:Mate 06.jpg ("Dupe of Image:Mate000000.JPG") but they are two problems:

  • (1) I've load the image in november 2005 and is a legitime work of my own, and
  • (2) user Nascente load the image in february 2008 as it was his own work, this is NOT true.

Also, I'd loaded under {{self2|GFDL|cc-by-sa-2.5,2.0,1.0}}, and now the image is under {{PD}}.

I'm afraid it's not done 100%. The update of Image:Mate000000.JPG don't preserve the historial, not allow the use of File:Mate 06.jpg in the projects that use it. Could you restore the original? --Tano4595 17:55, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
The image was replaced. Siebrand 18:23, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
I desagree the proceding. I think you must delete de newer duplicate, not the original. Otherwise, the historial is lost and the bots will delete soon File:Mate 06.jpg in the several projects that is actually in use. --Tano4595 18:31, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

Categories in dupes

Oups, you did it again: Image:Fort McHenry Entrance.JPG was listed for deletion, but its category wasn't added to the supposed replacement: Image:FtMcHenryEntrance.JPG. I repaired it, but over the last two or three days I came to late by many of your deletions and have no way of knowing, how many categories were lost. Please take care. Preserving meta information such as categories is more important then deleting dupes. --h-stt !? 17:53, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

Replaced an image with one that does not exist

Hi!

Getting rid of duplicates is a good idea, but there is an error in the process. For example here, it replaced an image that is a duplicate with one that does not exist at all. The problem is that the correct name has blanks, but it substituted a name with underscores. This also happened on the Hubble Space Telescope. Since I only watch about 200 pages, the problem must be pretty common. LouScheffer 02:56, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Upon rechecking, it's the edit summary that refers to the picture that does not exist. The article is fine, but since the edit summary has both images as red links, I had to double check the article to see. LouScheffer 03:01, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Your CommonsDelinker has made this edit. Thanks, Cacycle 12:29, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Please!

The next time you delete a duplicate image, would you please make sure that you either keep the version that is categorized or move the categories to the version you're gonna keep. Do you have any idea how annoying and tedious it is to hunt down cases like Image:Biserica cu Cocos din Cluj-Napoca.jpg and do the same goddamn thing over again? It's quite enough that most people here don't even bother to categorize, I'd say we don't need users to remove those categories. Dahn 22:10, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Best try and stay civil. It's not like we have different goals... Siebrand 12:19, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

It was not a duplicate. It lacked the annoying gradient which the French Wikipedia COA project includes on all their coats of arms images (to give some feeble illusion of three-dimensionality), but which makes all the colors slightly "off" (all whites beome greys) etc., and severely limits their usefulness outside of the French Wikipedia itself. Sayyid Kazim

I was wondering why you changed the Image:Sayyid Kazim Rashti.jpg with Image:Seyed Ali Mohammed Bab.jpg. We have a reliable source, Balyuzi, H.M. (1973) The Báb: The Herald of the Day of Days, Oxford, UK: George Ronald, pp. p. 16 ISBN 0853980489 which reproduces this image and states "Hájí Siyyid Kázim-i-Rashtí - This photograph was mistakenly identified as one of the Báb by Nicolas in his book Seyyed Ali Mohammed dit le Báb." So the image is of Sayyid Kazim, and should be named that, and not the Bab. Regards, -- Jeff3000 14:05, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

The newest and most reliable sources state the image is of Sayyid Kazim, and not of the Bab, and specifially note that the old book published in the late 1800s is wrong. Why are you using the older source? Regards, -- Jeff3000 15:06, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
Please work out the sourcing issue with your opponent first. Thanks. Siebrand 15:08, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
The opponents are using a old source, and the newest sources state the the old sources are wrong. I have proved reliable sources, and you've taken their side without looking into the situation. The status quo was the correct name. The so-called opponents are using the image of the name for the POV on the Persian Wikipedia. As you know Baha'is are a persecuted religion in Iran. Regards, -- Jeff3000 15:11, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
Siebrand cleans up tons of duplicates and it was a duplicate. So let's assume good faith here and not accuse him of taking any sides. If a consensus is formed that it should be the other name, I don't think he would have a problem sending CommonsDelinker back out there to rename it. Of course, if he went the other way on this one, he would get complaints from the other side. Sometimes you just can't win, so go easy on him. :) Rocket000 17:44, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Hey Siebrand, please see Commons:Administrators' noticeboard#Sayyid Kazim. What would you think if this image was renamed to Image:ImageinNicolas.jpg? It seems to be a good neutral name. Rocket000 01:34, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

strange rename

This diff looks strange, replacing Image:Charles_Perrault.jpg with Image:ChPerrault.jpg . I think the former name was more descriptive and appropriate, and it is also an older image. John Vandenberg (chat) 03:10, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

As the latter is more properly sourced, that one was kept. Cheers! Siebrand 03:14, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
That is ridiculous. As the images are identical, the information on both image pages shuold be merged together and placed on the best named image, so it is easier to find. The enWP image says "Source: French wiKipedia: http://perso.club-internet.fr/stuvocal/chat_botte.html" - That link is dead, and [3] gives no attribution details. Hi Siebrand. In Galician Wikipedia recent changes I saw this edition. In my opinion San Anton.Oleiros.Galicia.jpg is better than Image:Castillo0003.jpg. The name San Anton.Oleiros.Galicia is more descriptive than generic name Castillo (Castle). The first name locate San Antón Castle in geographical location: Oleiros municipality in Galicia. Hi. Im not optimist to addition some new users (like Special:Contributions/ChristianEdwardGruber). What is your solution about these problems? continuing NPOV? --Rohan 21:24, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Yes if policy would be followed, a neutral name would be picked for these images where there are sources that state different things. If we were to actually follow NPOV, we would be picking a neutral name. There are sources, newer and actually more reliable, that state 1) the image is not of the Bab, but of Sayyid Kazim. I don't want to push Sayyid Kazim, and thus the original agreement over a neutral name, but Rohan wants to push his own POV. Regards, -- Jeff3000 21:43, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

You recently deleted this image, since it was an exact duplicate of this image. The reason the duplicate "b" was uploaded was because there is already an image with the same filename as the latter "non-b" image on en.wikipedia, meaning that the replacement image cannot be used. CommonsDelinker has now replaced the original (working) "b" image with the local "non-b" image, which fails to render and is generally poorer-looking than the "b" image was. Hi,

You asked that Okla5b.jpg be replaced by Moore_Oklahoma_Tornado_Damage.jpg, as it was in category "Duplicate". I agree to eliminate duplicate, however I have inputed the first image in 2007 and the second was just loaded today. In wiki logic, my Okla5b.jpg, having a longer histoiry, should have been kept. What was your logic? If it is the name more expressive, I must point out that there is more images in Category:Oklahoma City May 3rd 1999 Tornadoes showing damages and that the new name chosen for this particular image is not particularly oustanding. Flounder Camo md.jpg

Hi! When you deleted Image:Flounder Camo md.jpg as a dupe of Image:Flounder camo md.jpg, did you happen to notice that it was the version with the capital C that had been tagged as a featured picture on en.wikipedia? It's all a bit confusing (even the FPC nomination uses both names), but I think I've mostly fixed it now. I suspect, though, that there may have been some tags and categories on the deleted image description page (such as Category:Commons featured widescreen desktop backgrounds) which should perhaps be copied to the surviving image. Since I can't see the deleted content, could you please look into that? Oh, and just to humor me, could you please double-check that they really were pixel-by-pixel identical dupes? —Ilmari Karonen 13:08, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

I haven't really read up on the details, but from what I understand you had a difference of opinion, where your opinion was the minority opinion. There are a few ways to resolve that: keep on trying to change opinion in debate, change your views, persist and get frustrated and eventually leave. It appears you choose the latter, which is sad. There were IMO many other things you could have chosen to be involved in. Where so many people have to work together, getting your personal excellent solution implemented is often hard, if not unobtainable. I have been in a similar position often, both in Wikimedia projects, and outside of them. It is life, basically and you make your own choices, bearing the consequences, both the positive and the negative ones. Maybe this helps you, who knows :)
As for the js stuff: not really my thing. Too many other things to do. I took a quick look at it. Was not able to make out quickly enough what exactly it was about. the waving-in-the-wind svg flags of Monaco and Indonesia

Hi. It would appear that you initiated the cross-wiki replacement of Image:Nuvola Monegasque flag.svg with Image:Nuvola Indonesian flag.svg. I noticed this and commented at User talk:Rlevse#Image:Nuvola Indonesian flag.svg and Monegasque flag. The two svg flies are exact copies, but the flags are different; Monaco's is rather narrower in relation to it's height. It would seem to me that the replacements should be undone and the waving-in-the-wind svg file for Monaco updated to render a somewhat squarer image. I don't have much experience with editing svg files nor do I speak French or Italian (the languages of the wikis where this mostly applies). Just my two rupiah. Cheers, User:Jack Merridew a.k.a. Replacement of a picture by CommonsDelinker

CommonsDelinker replaced this image in this German article. What CommonsDelinker did not consider was that this picture in the German Wikipedia (not the Commons!) has the exact same name. Certainly not very smart of the uploaders, but it effectively means that the article has a different picture now, because pictures in the German Wikipedia take precedence over those from the Commons. Please rename one of the pictures (AFAIK I cannot do that as a normal user) so that the original picture can be used again in the German Wikipedia. And have CommonsDelinker check for stuff like this the next time ;) Thanks --Regani 11:12, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Dear user, I noticed that you use the includePage function in your monobook.js page.

This function is now obsolete, as the importScript function was introduced with rev:35064 to the MediaWiki Javascript core library wikibits.js. It also keeps track of already imported files.

Hi, Your bot has been recently translating category titles related to cathedrals from french to english, which is nice. Did you read the template {{PD-Orgelbrand}} before you added "no source" tag? Letters were to small? I will repeat it using bigger ones:

Questions from Ahonc

Hi Siebrand

Please find attached message in relation to my question. The administrator Ahonc directed my question to you. Would you be able to review my question and provide your advice at your convenience.

I am looking forward to hearing from your advice

Image Tagging Image:Swan_St._Bridge_over_the_Yarra_River.jpg

Please delete Image:Swan_St._Bridge_over_the_Yarra_River.jpg Thanks in advance --Donaldytong 11:01, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi Ahonc

Thanks for your message left in my talk page. I found my previous uploaded Image:Yarra River & Swan Street Bridge.jpg was removed and Image:Swan_St._Bridge_over_the_Yarra_River.jpg is still remained (you requested for deletion). Also Image:Melbourne Sheraton Hotel at South Bank of the Yarra River.jpg and Image:Melbourne Le Meridien Hotel.jpg were tagged by me for deletion because the building is no longer called Sheraton Hotel and Le Maridien respectively. These tags were removed as well.

Would you be able to let me know what was happened and what I can do for these incorrect name of the images?

I am looking forward to hearing from your advice.

Thanks --Donaldytong 14:25, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Siebrand reverted tags. Ask him why did he do it.--Ahonc (talk) 14:36, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
Ampersands are strange creatures that should not be in file names. Siebrand 13:02, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

I did not get what your answer is. My question is that I found my previous uploaded Image:Yarra River & Swan Street Bridge.jpg was removed and Image:Swan_St._Bridge_over_the_Yarra_River.jpg is still remained (Ahonc requested for deletion).

Thanks --Donaldytong 09:31, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

You must use {{Bad name}} properly to tag duplicates. For rename requests you should use {{Rename}}, which should also be used properly. A {{Bad name}} without a duplicate target will be removed (as you describe above). As for choosing which image will eventually be deleted: that's something I evaluated in case of Image:Yarra River & Swan Street Bridge.jpg was removed and Image:Swan_St._Bridge_over_the_Yarra_River.jpg and I simply chose the other one, instead of the one you selected, because ampersands in file names are evil. Siebrand 09:54, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
P.s. I would appreciate it if you used proper indentation. That makes it much more likely that I can give a quick reply. Look at the above: it's extremely messy. Siebrand 09:57, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
Just want to let you know that I'm getting annoyed by you appearingly not taking *any* notice of what is happening to your edits, or doing anything with the advice I give you above. I just reverted your speedy deletion request. Siebrand 14:09, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Could you please provide the answer that why I cannot use speedydelete|reason? I am the original author of the images and now the building names have been changed, which are irrelevant and not informative to the viewers of these two photos. I do not know what names they are for the current building names. May I request to delete these two images? Sorry, I added speedy delete tag again, but provided the reasons for deletion. Furthermore, may I have another question? Can an original author of the image withdraw the free license of the image in Wikimedia Commons? If he/she did, what would be the consequence? I am looking forward to hearing from your advice. Thanks--Donaldytong 05:59, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

There is no reason to remove validly licensed material. The name appears to have been correct in the past. Get the new names somehow and just note in the description the name has changed. When the new name is known, the files can be renamed. Stop messing about. Siebrand 06:48, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks very much for your advice and clarification. I am not sure how long it will take me to get the right names of the buildings. In the meantime, these two images may confuse the viewers, which is not desirable and objective for Wikimedia Commons. I would like to leave this matter in your trustful hands. Thanks again--Donaldytong 10:07, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Mystriosuchus.png

The gif image should be the one that's deleted, as a png image ensures no loss of quality over time, why a gif does not. Wilhelmina Will 07:32, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

In Wikipedia, they usually delete jpgs and gifs whenever a png version of the image is available. The image you deleted was a png image, while the one it was a "duplicate" of was a gif image. Why are you in favour of an inferior image? Wilhelmina Will 20:45, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Deleted wrong version of Pseudo-Seneca-Brogi?

You recently deleted Image:Pseudo-Seneca-Brogi.jpeg on the grounds that it was a duplicate of Image:Pseudo-Seneca-Brogi.jpg. However, Image:Pseudo-Seneca-Brogi.jpeg was the original one, and Image:Pseudo-Seneca-Brogi.jpg the duplicate. I happen to know, since I uploaded the original; I can't remember now if this was to commons.wikimedia.org or to en.wikipedia.org, since the history has been removed.

Can you please undo the deletion, and delete the ".jpg" one instead? I prefer ".jpeg" as extension names for JPEG images. Thanks. Eubulides 16:40, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

'jpeg' is not a standard extension. 'jpg' or 'JPG' is used more often. I usually delete the 'jpeg' and I see no reason here to honour your request, as it 'saves' nothing and costs me time. Cheers! Siebrand 16:41, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Wrong duplicate

Hello, you seem to have have deleted the wrong duplicate ;)

As per Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Tomba di Roberto il Guiscardo.jpg and the deletion tag still on the old pic. Could you reverse the process? Thanks. 62.147.37.190 18:45, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. That's my duty (I contribute in fa.wiki) But you performed it! • Rohan T 12:05, 28 May 2008

Not sure how you find which dupes on Commons are locally present on fa.wp, but if you haven't already, you may want to use the following URLs: [8], [9], [10]. With these URLs you will probably be able to dump *a lot* of images that have duplicates somewhere... Siebrand 12:08, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your attention. I try to find duplicated images from there. But in fa.wp images with copyvio may be left over 6 month! as this manner of fa.wp.sysops dup images may be left a year :-) • Rohan T 12:18, 28 May 2008
That sounds like an absurd policy... Can you let me know which template I should use there which is equivalent to {{No license}} here. I'll tag some image... So you have something to delete in six months :) Siebrand 12:19, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

I just tagged 511 files with {{No license}} on fa.wp[11]. And asked a question on the talk page of the category why the files in cat are not being processed. Who knows... It may help. Siebrand 13:53, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
Very thanks about your attention. I awaked your Bot do that, othewise I'll run a bot to start do this task. Can imagetansfer.py help me to do these tasks? • Rohan T 13:59, 28 May 2008
about fa.sysops: I have no hope in that. They left about 6 monyh without any attention! • Rohan T 14:04, 28 May 2008
You should not use imagecopy.py before you have properly cleaned your local file store. I have described a process you could follow on eo:User:Siebrand. Getting rid of "NowCommons", "no source", "no license" before starting to transfer "own work" and "OTRS verified" to Commons is very important in my opinion. Siebrand 14:05, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

--Atamari 09:05, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

CommonsDelinker and FlaggedRevs

I notice that CommonsDelinker is the top reviewer on German Wikipedia in the last hour, flagging 21 articles as sighted. Is the bot supposed to be able to do that? Is it only edits to previously sighted articles that are being re-sighted by CommonsDelinker, or is the bot registering articles as sighted for the first time?--Ragesoss 01:23, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

I would sure hope the former and not the latter :) I think you should check the edits CD makes. I guess they are only image replacements. CD does not have any logic to make changes to flagged revs properties. Siebrand 01:26, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
It seems to be working properly; the only article I found that had no prior sighted revisions remained unsighted after CD changed an image. Other bots on de-wiki seem to be doing the same thing, only re-sighting if the previous version is sighted.--ragesoss 01:33, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Helena Paparizou's Images

Why did you delete my images "Elena Paparizou, Eurovision Song Contest 2005.jpg" and "Elena Paparizou, ESC 2005, Final.jpg"? I didn't violate copyright! These was posted at flickr and marked license template CC...--KriFFek 07:36, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I am sure you assumed good faith. But these are obviously screen captures that the Flickr poster does not have a copyright on. Please use common sense. Siebrand 07:41, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
I think, if it'll be screen captures there will be some hindrances, lines and rodacter's logo. But it's true, image "Martin Stenmarck ESC05.jpg" violates copyright too. But I don't think that these images are screen captures. Screens can't be such good quality. For example this [12] is screen.
I fear these things will only get harder to determine as High Definition Television penetrates further and further. I have also deleted the image you indicated as a capture. Thank you for your understanding and help. Cheers! Siebrand 07:57, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

while looking at recent uploads....

I was just looking at the recent uploads and I got curious about what all of the seeming square white images were in the stream. This is one example: Image:De Die Chinesische Mauer (Kraus) 16.jpg. Now I am confused/curious if these uploads were intended and what is going on. -- carol (tomes) 14:11, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

I replace the empty book pages with exactly the same simple image (a 1x1 pixel) to reduce the number of duplicate pairs. I think there will be 50-200 more of those uploads. They look a bit out of place, but it actually serves a purpose. Unfortunately we cannot redirect to a 1x1 pixel *and* have a description page. This is the best compromise. Siebrand 16:32, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for the explanation. I only looked at the one page before asking and it is still interesting as it is a solution for a problem that I did not know existed. Managing a few million images should always be kind of interesting. -- carol (tomes) 16:45, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Help with renaming

Hi, I was just approved as a trusted user for renaming media via Commons:MediaMoveBot. Can you give me some advices how to use the bot? ??

In most cases it doesn't if you replace it by 1 pixel pictures. But what is the benefit, 1 pixel picture 21 Kb scan of the original page 33 KB. and it might be that a white page with a small remark will be overeritten. because it will falsly defined as an dupkicate. And the next problem ist, that an Admin with no knowledge of the situation will do a mass deletion of 1 pixel files because he thinks that is a fault.

It is about reducing the number of duplicate pairs so that cleaning up the last pairs are not cluttered with all kinds of experiments by mostly book uploaders. And so that we can let the book uploaders more easily know where they made the mistakes. We are now actually below 1.700 duplicate pairs and that is quite an achievement... This is where the hard work for you as a book uploader starts... :) Siebrand 17:15, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Dupes and redirects

I'm not sure if this is a bug, the result of an out-of-date list, or just an accident, so I'm letting you know in case it's a bug that can be fixed:

OsamaK tagged Image:RKTanitimYeniHanCaravanseraiManisaTurkey.jpg as a dupe of Image:RKYeniHanCaravanseraiManisaTurkey.jpg, I assume based on the dupes lists you've been creating. The second one had already been deleted a month ago and redirected to the first one. So the result was, the redirect page was replaced (by CommonsDelinker) by a redirect to itself, and the file it was supposed to point to was deleted. I'm not sure if that was because of an out-of-date dupes list or a bug in the duplicates query script or something else. Cheers--ragesoss 07:05, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I read it on his talk page. Redirected pages do not show up as a dupe in the queries that I use as source for the dupes list. It must have been 'out of date'. Shit happens, but as long as we have people like you reporting it, no harm done that cannot be corrected. Cheers! Siebrand 11:08, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

OTRS

Complicated questions

I am here asking what to me are complicated questions and the reason I am here asking them is that I think you operate a bot which leaves a really good footprint; like it doesn't make a mess of things and actually is cleaning stuff up here.

I have been attempting to communicate with a couple of people who have access and are writing software which is similar that is supposed to help with managing images. They write, instead, something more akin to paint ball spewing software. I end up feeling somewhat victimized because of things like this if you can see the list of undo I had to do there. The system that seems to be in place here -- I would have to say, resembles the German invasion of Guernica which was the first time they used aerial warfare (if I heard the story correctly) and they used the planes and other toys to chase people into buildings then bombed the buildings to chase them out into the streets then bombed the streets to chase them into the buildings, etc. I made those changes because I care. I would like to see the people involved who caused the situation in which I did what the software is supposed to do make some changes because even if they don't care, I do enough for all of us.

Writing software is complicated, I have written some simple python scripts -- I think that perhaps the scripts I have written are somewhat more complicated than a paintball bot (a bot that spews templates onto lists of image pages or atop of Category pages. I find it also to be extremely intersting that there are no gallery with stuff spewed upon them. How come the paintball bots do not spew there?

I have written about the huge gaps in time in which I have not had access to a computer between say now and 1976 when I first started to play with them. It is the kind of situation in which writing articles is perhaps a good task for me -- but if there are no people who can write good software (I don't consider a paintball bot to be good software, but I might be wrong about that.) And if the people with the access are not interested in writing software that accomplishes more than just the simple pasting of templates and other annoyances -- well, see how complicated the question is.

I looked back on this and the only question I have asked coherently (I actually had access to a computer with Coherent installed, but the internet was a long distance phone call and making a database on that thing of my music collection seemed premature, as was the time spent with the Osborne) is this one "How come the paintball bots don't spew on the gallery pages?"

Can you help or point me somewhere that they are not constantly restarting world war one in spain? -- carol (tomes) 19:47, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

Images relating to Flat Holm

Hi Siebrand you have tagged a load of images for deletion which were either taken by me or my staff as part of our work to promote awareness of Flat Holm island through the Wikipedia article which we are working to get to good article status. I will send emails to record permission as suggested but would appreciate your help for work that has been done in good faith Please advise TR001 06:04, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

Sending permission to OTRS should suffice. Best add {{OTRS pending}} to the image and remove the request for deletion. "Assuming good faith" is not an issue here. I do assume you have the best indentions, but when it comes to licensing issues, contributors should just deliver unambiguous proof of license - nothing personal. Cheers! Siebrand 18:55, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
Please see reply to emails

We have received the permission for the images (both in this and the other four emails you sent) and have made the necessary modifications to the Image pages.

Thank you for providing this to us, and for your contribution to the Wikimedia Commons.

Yours sincerely, Daniel Bryant

Right. Same here... Siebrand 14:56, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
I think this is about CommonsDelinker. Even though it is a bot, it is not everywhere flagged as one, as 'we' (Bryan and I) leave that complete up to communities to decide. We do not request bot flags, and have a neutral opinion about it - things are to be said for both types of behaviour. Siebrand 15:02, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Image:Flag of Serbia Pantone.svg

Hi,

I see that you have deleted Image:Flag of Serbia Pantone.svg, stating that it is a duplicate of Image:Flag of Serbia.svg. However, I don't recall that the two images were the same, as they used different color palettes. Having this version is useful in order to compare the palettes, especially as there is occasional edit warring on the issue, so could you please undelete it? Thanks in advance :) Nikola 16:31, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

sostituisco l'immagine Blason_Bourganeuf_23.svg con Albe_arms.svg

Commonsdelinker erased image Blason_Bourganeuf_23.svg and substitute it with image Albe_arms.svg (the two images have same design but they refers to different cities). Now the list of cities of french departement Creuse show an image who is related to town Albé of french departement Bas-Rhin (as shown in its page). This could create big confusion to an user who doesn't know the blasonnement of the town of Bourganeuf. Please, arrest the substitution of images of coats of arms: only the image is not enough to understand a blazon, also the older's name is important. --151.49.66.49 19:29, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Deleted images used by scripts

Dear Siebrand, you have once again deleted Image:WikEd_ctrl.png. As I have told you before, this image is used by a tool / gadget. This was clearly marked by the following template:

All images in this gallery or category are used by a MediaWiki tool, gadget, or user script.

Changes to these images will affect many users.
Please discuss any changes with the uploader or script maintainer first.

Please note: These images might be loaded dynamically so that there might be no direct links.

Your deletion currently affects thousands of users of wikEd! Please restore the image immediately and make sure that this does not turn into a monthly game (by placing the image on a blacklist or by checking for that template). Thanks, Cacycle 12:59, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Right. That one was on my list... Sorry (once again). I have now created a redirect. Does this resolve it (I think it should, but not certain). Siebrand 13:55, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
No! Please restore the image. Thanks, Cacycle 21:42, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
Could you explain to me why you need two image that are equal under different names? If It Walks Like a Duck and Quacks Like A Duck... Siebrand 21:45, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
It is used for different purposes and and the actual pixel values might change. I really hope I do not have to make some minor changes just to prevent you from deleting it... Cacycle 21:53, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
Well, it pops up as a byte-by-byte duplicate. You are not contesting that. Displaying the same image in different ways is no reason to have it twice. It is even heavier on your application. I propose that you change your app a timy bit to use the same image, until there is an actual need to pollute commons with unneeded duplicates. If you think that your purposes are best served by changing the image in its most minor detail, please do so. I see no reason to restore the file. Of course you are free to contest this on COM:UR. Please reference this discussion. Cheers! Siebrand 21:59, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Commons Delinker substituted the image Del_.jpg with Image:Del.jpg but the newer version wasn't uploaded properly

I was on the "Gurgaon" page and I noticed that one of the images was totally white. Then I saw you removed that image with a duplicate. The duplicate hasn't been uploaded properly. So trhe image is blank. It would be very kind of you if you redelete the old image as the new image hasn't ben uploaded properly. Thanks Manaspunhani (talk) 05:42, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Without a proper page link, I cannot confirm your observation. Please give me that information if you want me to do anything. Image:Del.jpg looks OK to me. Cheers! Siebrand 16:04, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

You have deleted the picture "Image:Schlacht bei Hard.jpg" that I uploaded 2006 to the commons, because back then it was only available on the english wiki. Now somebody uploaded it again and you decided to delete my version. I do not want to question that decision but I would be delighted if - next time - you would copy the german description to the english page befor you delete my picture. sidonius (talk) 17:30, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

en.wp is not a source. What was the source before it got from en.wp? Uploading a copyright violation on en.wp, then moving it here with a reference to a 'valid license' on en.wp does not make it really valid, does it? Cheers! Siebrand 10:50, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Blason_Bourganeuf_23.svg and Albe_arms.svg

As I yet told you Commonsdelinker erased Blason_Bourganeuf_23.svg and substitute it with image Albe_arms.svg (black shield with three white chevrons). Today user Caranorn uploaded a new version of coat of arms of Albé (Armoiries commune fr Albé (67).svg - blue shield with three white chevrons). So the old coat of arms of Albé could be wrong. If the black shield for Albé should be deleted because wrong, which should be the coat of arms to be referred to the town of Bourganeuf (the coat of arms of Bourganeuf was deleted !) ?. --Massimop (talk) 19:40, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Oh, and I started to say something, but deleted it, but your response brings it back to mind. It was transwikied last year with exactly that source. I suppose whoever moved it (and then deleted it from enwiki) thought the description and context were proof enough of its age. It was deleted here apparently because someone has sharper eyes or a narrower interpretation of policy, and yet there was no attempt that I can see to notify anyone on enwiki where it was being used. (I can't tell if the uploader here was notified since I can't see the deleted history, therefore I don't know whose talk page to check.) No wonder enwiki users are so vocal about trying to make sure that local copies are not deleted when images are transferred to commons. Thatcher(on enwiki) 11:14, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Moving images?

Hi, I recently stumbled over Commons:Village_pump#Moving images - why is it so hard?, and had a few questions and a request which I do not expect to be anwered there any more, unless I directly ask someone more competent. So, can "Moving of images" already be done, and if yes, by whom? TX, --WeHaWoe 07:27, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Files cannot be moved. What is possible is to create redirects within the namespace Image:. That means that you create a redirect from Image:RedirectedImage to Image:Test.jpg, and then you can add Image:RedirectedImage anywhere, and Image:Test.jpg will be used. Hardly renaming, and does not really solve the problem, because the source will remain the incorrectly named file.
So we re-upload files, then orphan the source, and delete the source with reference to the target. We use tags ({{rename|tonewname|reason}}, trusted users to add the tags, and a bot (Commons:MediaMoveBot) to do the heavy lifting. In local wikis this is probably not worth while, but here it is definitely added value to have media files named correctly, as it increases chances for finds and usage, just like proper description and categories. It suck, but it is reality.
A risky rewrite of the file backend for MediaWiki, and a conversion of existing file stores should be performed, planned for a long time already, but no one is working on it as far as I know, to make native file renaming possible. The idea would be to store files under their sha1 and human readable file names would only be table entries, always pointing to the file that cannot have a name different from its sha1. Obviously this introduces new challenges regarding uploading of new versions, synchronisation when using shared file repositories, etc. To sum it up: not trivial. Which is probably why no one has gotten around to doing it.
Well, there you have it. More clear now? Cheers! Siebrand 08:05, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
I do think so ;) -- TX --WeHaWoe (talk) 19:15, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

I thought that {{new name}} would only be appropriate after a re-upload was already done (which, of course, I'd like to avoid)? Or am I wrong on this?. Bot CommonsDelinker

(Sorry for my English, I'm not good in this language). Hi, I belive, there is a little problem with this bot or with the organization of deletion: for example, we have in ru-wiki a project "World famous paintings" (ru:Википедия:Проект:Известные картины). It is a list of paintings made as a <gallery></gallery>, as you can see. So, somebody erased here painting image:Francisco_Goya_-_Saturno_devorando_a_un_hijo.jpg. And instead of replacing it with match copy, for example image:Goya - Saturno devorando a su hijo.jpg, this bot simply erased all the mention of this painting from this list at all. That is a notable loss for the project. We used to belive to CommonsDelinker's edits and not to check after it, but now I've checked, and saw that this way it erased[14]from our list one more painting - Giorgione's Judith, that was also easely to replace with copy. It is not very bad for usual article, but for listes/galleries it is. Can I ask for a little bit more accuracy in deleting of such files with already existing but not used replacements? It is bad to simply delete it without replacements. Or it is not bot's problem, but the users' who deleteted this files without marking of duplicates? Thanks. --Shakko (talk) 19:51, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

All duplicate deletes should be checked before deletion, and not deleted before it has been made certain that the file has been orphaned. You should definitely complain with the deleting admin. Sometimes CommonsDelinker cannot replace. You can check successful and failed replacements here. Cheers! Siebrand 19:55, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Friedrich_August_III..jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multilicense GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. Books happen to be sequences of pages. If two pages have been designated the same scan (not being an empty page), something went wrong. That has to be corrected. I think you made a mistake when deleting this duplicate. The description and source of the kept file is very different from the information in the original description (upload log comment) of the deleted file. /Ö 15:48, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

You have also deleted many other "duplicates" without checking for correct descriptions. For example, many Carl Michael Bellman songs you have replaced and deleted so that the song numbers do not match the number of kept file. Either you should not delete such files, or you should edit the descriptions so they mention all songs that use the same melody. /Ö 15:57, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

CommonsDelinker on Hebrew wikiquote

Hi. FYI: I have just granted CommonsDelinker a bot flag on Hebrew wikiquote. I recommend you ask the local bureaucrats for a bot flag on all the other wikis where your bot doesn't have one yet. Have a nice day, Dolev (talk) 19:40, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

Nah. Asking a bot flag on 740 wikis is a bit too much. We are neutral towards this. Communities should decide for themselves if CD should get a flag or not. Siebrand 19:57, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

I have removed tags indicating that Image:Napoleon4.jpg, which seems to be the CLEARLY preferred version of the painting, should be replaced with Image:Jacques-Louis David 007.jpg which is a different version, and not anything close to an actual duplicate of the other versions of the painting. I have also reverted edits that were made at a few of the English Wikipedia articles, including Napoleon Crossing the Alps, where all FIVE painted versions of this work are discussed, this was clearly the preferred version, and the previous bot edit would have used the inferior image as a representation of 3 of them. I believe many people would appreciate it if the bot could be run again on other pages where the clearly preferred version of Napoleon on the piebald horse was removed for the muddier scan of the version of him on a brown horse. ~ Stormrider (talk) 21:31, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

"Mayors from New Orleans"?

I wish to state my objection to the move of "Category:Mayors of New Orleans" to "Category:Mayors from New Orleans". The new name IMO sounds absurd (what does it refer to-- perhaps a mayor of some city in another state who was born in New Orleans?) and some of the parent categories now seem non-existant. There was no discussion about renaming this category on the talk page nor immediate parent categories before the move. I request a reversal of this move. I am leaving a similar message on at User talk:Rocket000. Thank you for your attention. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 17:38, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

About Image:Mitsubishi logo.svg

Hi Siebrand,
Sorry to jump in--I saw this conversation at the Japanese village pump. My arguments may be completely invalid since I can't see what was deleted, but it seems to me that the standard Mitsubishi logo (i.e. the three diamonds and the "Mitsubishi" name) would be exempt from copyright in the first place because it is composed solely of simple text and geometric designs which, as explained at COM:L#Simple design, are not subject to copyright (see the relevant footnote here).
Based on this, could I ask you to reconsider your deletion, or at the very least correct me if I'm wrong about the content of the image? Thank you very much! --jonny-mt en me! 05:35, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

Raspberry Bavarois Photo

Hi -

Coul you tell me whether the following statement corresponds to your expectations for a publication in my next book, or if it lacks an element declaration:

I thank you in advance, Arianne

Looks great. Given that it is public domain, formally no credits at all are due. Also see Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia for a more elaborate "HOWTO". Cheers! Siebrand 10:46, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks very much for your prompt reply, Arianne

I see that you deleted Image:Picture 1.png, which was marked as an inappropriate image name, for being a duplicate of other inappropriate user names. This unprotected the page and someone has now uploaded an inappropriately named file to the location. Please refrain from deleting "generic" image names marked with files intended to prevent unhelpful filenames. Thanks, BanyanTree 00:22, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

Global account

Hi, Siebrand,

For as far a I can see there are now no more remains of the account User:Aiko. I'm not sure whether it is completely deleted, and if I could add this account to my global account, it is not visible in this tool.

Before, I asked you about the possibility of usurption [19], and as you may know, recently I was allowed to usurp the en:User:Aiko-account, but maybe Commons is not yet ready for account-Usurption? If the User:Aiko-account is indeed deleted, renaming would be another possibility, and maybe you could help me with starting up that procedure. Rolling back Delinker

Can you drop by the Village Pump, specificly the thread Commons:Village_pump#Luke_ford_permission? We had a mass removal of images on Commons (over 1100) which Delinker then removed from the other wikisites, as it should have. It's looking more and more like the Commons deletion was done in error and we're almost certainly looking at restoring them all to here. The question's come up about how to undo the what Delinker did, and I think the operator of it would be the best person to answer that question. Tabercil (talk) 15:37, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Help for student

Dear Sir,

My sincere apologies for taking the liberty of writing to you, instead of learning how to use Commons myself.

One of my students (Xavier) uploaded an image that he made, showing the pt:United Parcel Service logo, to be included in his article about that company. You were involved in deleting that image from Commons, with good reason, no doubt.

Xavier is not fluent enough in english, so he asked for my assistance on this matter.

Are you or anybody else available and willing to give Xavier or me some specific directions to try to get that image back on so that it can be included in his article?

I understand that the regular procedure is for a user to learn how to use Commons properly, but Xavier already tried and didn't succeed. At this time, being under pressure to grade all my students work, I can't afford to start learning from scratch about Commons. I'm just trying to mediate this matter, on behalf of Xavier, under the assumption that it would be of mutual interest, to all involved, to make that image available.

Best regards,

Hi Siebrand, I just now tried to improve on the de translation -- Template:Rename media/de. My questions:

  1. did you create the original template(s) "Rename" and/or "Rename media",
  2. did you create BetacommandBot, or both/all three of them? If not,
  3. where ist that stuff to be discussed? It seems pretty much worth while to have some little cleanup ASAP in the original(s), see, for instance, User_talk:Collard#File_Naming ;))
  • In short: Renaming a file, say Image:060530-F-4692S-014 (188125762).jpg failed, although the proposal was made by a trusted user (me ;) and (by error) moreover approved by admin Collard. My other proposals, untouched by any admin ;) were correctly dealt by the bot. I later re-signed my four edits concerned and now wait... ;)
Moved to Commons talk:MediaMoveBot --WeHaWoe (talk) 08:20, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
  • I think that the backlink Template:Rename redirecting to Template:Rename media should be eliminated from the template description, and the links to the outdated version should be changed by a bot. What do you think about? I'm going to do this in the de version, which, thereby, will be rather a proposal for improvement than a translation.
Going to remove backlinks, soon. Besides, create User_talk:WeHaWoe/Sandbox_tl_Rename, User_talk:WeHaWoe/Sandbox_tl_Rename/de, User_talk:WeHaWoe/Sandbox_desc_MediaMoveBot to try out for a while, having stopped to edit German translation. --WeHaWoe (talk) 08:20, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Question: Would it be manageable, with reasonable effort (by either text="approved" or "pending", or by using a subcategory, depending on "trusted user / admin" status or not), to mark the difference between non- and approved requests? It's not really funny to check each-and-all file histories to find out whether I (=any trusted user) should approve some request, or whether it's already "been done". Unless you know a better place for discussion, let's please talk here. Otherwise my monologue might be moved to any "better place". --WeHaWoe (talk) 08:37, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

(At the risk of looking overly pesky.) When I edit an article in ruwiki, the toolbar button's image is loaded from upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/03/Button_internal_link_ukr.png. Is there a chance to change the path so that no "ukr" is present?--Sergei (talk) 07:19, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

Hey Siebrand, have you or Bryan ever thought about adding a journal-output to the Commons-Delinker and functionality to undo its actions? Commenting out versus deletion

I'm thinking that the delinker bot should comment out references to stuff rather than deleting it outright. That way it's clear that something has been deleted, and some indication of what it is. Deleting it can damage the text in mysterious and subtle ways and it would take an awful lot of user munging through the history to detect this, and deal with it. Ideally the bot would add information, such as give a hidden URL of where the information was taken from, so that people can look for a workaround (yeah, I know...)Wolfkeeper (talk) 13:38, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

CommonsDelinker: new feature?

Hi! I'd like to offer an idea for a new feature for the CommonsDelinker-bot: RELINKING. Right now, when some Commons admin decides to delete an image, the bot helps (or damages, dependent on personal opinion) the Wikipedia's by unlinking the image, so there won't be any red image-links. When the image is restored here, it's mostly too late: all references in the Wiki's are gone.

I'd like to suggest a relinking-feature: when an admin restores an image, CommonsDelinker should look at it's own edits and revert it's own actions about the image. Off course, this can't happen is someone had edited in between, but when CommonsDelinker was the last editor, it could easily do that. I know it's somewhat heavily more cpu-intensive, but it happens less than deleting an image. --Tuvic (talk) 21:13, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

The process isn't that hard, but developer time is hard to come by... http://stable.toolserver.org/delinker/ contains all edits by CD. The feature request is not new. Someone needs to implement it, and Bryan does not have the time... Siebrand 22:05, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
Mmm, too bad. :-( Ah, well, I'll just be furthermore irritated by some Commons admins, then. Hell, I might even take a look at the original Delinker-code. (most lightly I wont, but you never know :-)) --Tuvic (talk) 07:43, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Hallo

The top table at User:CommonsDelinker page says "The bot should currently be active on most all Wikimedia projects". Shouldn't it be either all or most instead of the two of them together? --Javier ME (talk) 21:21, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

Nice. You found a case where it didn't work, indeed. I do not think that we are going to try to catch every possible exception. Thank you for changing it manually. As for the user page: feel free to improve. Thank you in advance for that too :P Cheers! Siebrand 21:51, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

Paste-able list

A toast!

User:Rocket000/Sandbox#paste-able Rocket acquired the list, I got NEDit and/or vi which is capable of pasting a column. That made a list which any yoyo running your bot can now paste. "Yoyo" being a kindly nickname for those who can add commands to the delinker but without enabled text editors and a handle on regexp. -- carol (talk) 07:54, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

✓ Done When the bot has finished, someone will have to take care of deleting (I do not think redirection makes sense) the source cats. Siebrand 09:01, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
