Made some edits, as in English we don't write "GunTower" or "SentryPost" (should be "Gun Tower" and "Sentry Post". Also, I feel we should stick to "Dongilchi", "Dongichi" and so on, rather than change them to "Dong1-chi", "Dong2-chi", etc., as these don't seem like proper words. But I'm not sure about the latter, because I don't know how such words are usually written in Korean. — Cheers, JackLee talk 10:42, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hello. A renaming like 'move cat|East-1 Sentry Post (Hwaseong Fortress)‎|Dong1 Sentry Post (Hwaseong Fortress)' was NOT my proposal and, in my opinion, is exactly what should be avoided. When I have proposed these series of renamings, I have thinked that they were not controversial : I was the recent creator of most of them, and there was at least one historical example of each proposal.
If someone thinks that these renamings are controversial, we have to use the regular procedure: "if you challenge a request added here, please simply remove it and kindly inform the requester of your reason for doing so. Invite the requester to open a formal request using {{move|new name}} or COM:CFD to discuss the requested name change".
I will, in a near future, open such a discussion. Some elements can be found at : en:Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Language#Renaming_of_categories_relating_to_the_Hwaseong_Fortress_at_the_Wikimedia_Commons
For the moment, the uniformity of the main subcategories should be restored by
Rename Category:Sentry posts of Hwaseong Fortress)‎ to Category:Sentry Posts (Hwaseong Fortress)‎ (0 entries moved, 0 to go) Warning: Please add a reason. Warning: Username of requester missing (user parameter). For transparency and to prevent abuse, please add your username.
Rename Category:Gun towers of Hwaseong Fortress‎ to Category:Gun Towers (Hwaseong Fortress‎) (0 entries moved, 0 to go) Warning: Please add a reason. Warning: Username of requester missing (user parameter). For transparency and to prevent abuse, please add your username.
It will be an interresting discussion to argue between '(HF)', 'of HF' and 'of the HF', but all of the other sub-categories are now using parentheses (and my proposal was to maintain this uniformity, using parentheses). Pldx1 (talk) 11:36, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have any objection to either "Sentry posts of Hwaseong Fortress" or "Sentry posts (Hwaseong Fortress)", and will leave the decision to the administrator doing the renaming. However, in English we do not capitalize terms like gun towers and sentry posts unless a specific gun tower or sentry post is being referred to. Thus, "Sentry posts (Hwaseong Fortress)" is correct but "Sentry Posts (Hwaseong Fortress)" is wrong. However, "Seobuk Sentry Post (Hwaseong Fortress)" is correct because a specific sentry post is being referred to. — Cheers, JackLee talk 20:39, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • One more (last) time: the point was not about this or that, but about uniformity over the 60 subcategories 'Hwaseong Fortress', the aim being to provide an easy use... for people using these categories. If this cannot be obtained using English words, there are so many other languages: remember, we are in Commons. The German Kanonenturm, Watchturm, usw. would do the job. The Pinyin Paolu, Pulou, etc. would also be efficient. This needs time, reflexion, discussion and consensus. For the moment, this a job in progress. Nevertheless, the unilateraly decided renaming of 'Sentry Posts (Hwaseong Fortress)' into 'Sentry posts of Hwaseong Fortress)' seems weird, even according to any English rule. Thank you for this interresting contribution. Pldx1 (talk) 09:20, 4 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with you absolutely that there should be uniformity in category names. However, we do have policies about how categories should be named. At the moment, the policy is category names should generally be in English: see "Commons:Categories#Category names". There isn't always a standard English name for a particular place. In such a case, I think it is appropriate to use the name of the place in its original language but spelled using the Roman alphabet (for example, "Category:Fukushima prefecture", not "
福島県
"). However, if you want to translate the name, then it would have to be in English and not other languages such as German or Mandarin. Also, you would have to ensure that it follows English language conventions, such as Gun Tower and not GunTower. As for categories like "Sentry posts of Hwaseong Fortress", note that the format "'XXX part' of 'YYY place'" is frequently used in the Commons. Here are some examples: "Category:Towers of the Sagrada Família"; "Category:Walls of the former Dominican Monastery in Elbląg". — Cheers, JackLee talk 09:38, 4 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Taking the first item here as an example all that is being done is substituting the word Dong for the word East, the romanisation of the Korean word for east, if we want to be true to the use of the tower's proper name then we should go all the way and use the accepted Romanisations of the Korean names so [[Category::Dongilporu]] in preference to either Category:East-1 Sentry Post (Hwaseong Fortress)‎ or Category:Dong1 Sentry Post (Hwaseong Fortress)‎. However given that doing this would make the categories meaningless to anyone unfamiliar with the topic I would not advocate this.

Categories may be descriptive or proper names, and in some category schemes the descriptive names are applied throughout, e.g Category:Air force of xxxx nation rather than the proper name of the organisation so Category:Air force of the United Kingdom rather than Royal Air Force. So although Category:Sentry Posts (Hwaseong Fortress) and Category:Sentry posts of Hwaseong Fortress look similar there are subtle differences between the two; the first is based on a proper name categorisation, whilst the second is an attempt at a descriptive one. So maybe Category:Hwaseong Fortress east 1 sentry post?--20:11, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

Really this should go to Commons:Categories for discussion.--20:11, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
For everybody's information Pldx1 has moved the contents of Category:Sentry posts of Hwaseong Fortress to Category:Poru (Hwaseong Fortress).--KTo288 (talk) 22:05, 7 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Moving lots of files into new category[edit]

I'm confused about how to formally request this, but I just created the empty Category:Maps of the Cascade Range because the files in Category:Maps of Cascade Range need to be moved there. Can this bot or another bot move all the files? Jsayre64 (talk) 03:56, 20 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Jsayre64, please keep the attribution next time when moving to a new category name. It's important that we list all the previous authors of a category before moving it, either in the edit summary or elsewhere. TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 18:50, 20 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The Wikimedia Commons page User:Donaldytong has been changed on 7 April 2015 by CommonsDelinker[edit]

Hi,

I cannot understand why a link was deleted/removed on the page of Donaldytong. There was not an image (Burj_Khalifa.jpg) inserted in that page, but just a simple link provided to redirect to the Wikipedia article Burj Khalifa because I am the original author/contributor of that featured picture. The attached email below I received today (07/04/15) can be your reference. Can I put that link back to the page of Donaldytong? I am looking for your advice. CommonsDelinker: Replace File:Ricola Logo.svg with File:Ricola logo 2.png across all Wikimedia projects. Reason: New logo

This one seems like it could hit issues. For instance, if there was talk about the old logo, the replacement would break the discussion (at least, it might make some text inaccurate; for instance, "Green text spelling Ricola" would no longer be accurate). Also, it's SVG to PNG. Adam Cuerden (talk) 19:52, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Athletes to athletics competitors?[edit]

Would it be possible to replace "Athletes" with "Athletics competitors" in every sub-category of Category:Athletes by club, Category:Athletes by country and Category:Female athletes‎ as per Commons:Categories for discussion/2011/11/Category:Athletes? "Decathletes", "Heptathletes", and "Pentathletes" should not change. "Olympic athletes" should become "Olympic athletics competitors". I am hoping there's an easier way for this to be done than me manually editing every item in a list to post here. Thanks - Themightyquill (talk) 14:23, 12 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Themightyquill: What about Category:Athletes in art‎, like Category:Athletes in ancient Greek pottery‎? Then there is the issue with all the "YEAR Summer Olympics athletes‎" that should be moved to "YEAR Summer Olympics sportspeople" because they seem to include all sports; then the new categories "YEAR Summer Olympics athletics competitors" must be created and populated. --Ruthven (msg) 17:11, 21 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Ruthven: I wasn't sure about Athletes in Greek pottery. Do those count as sports competitors, or do the athletes of Ancient Greece qualify as a separate category? I'm not sure, for instance, if the Category:Charioteer of Delphi can properly be considered a track and field athlete. The same goes for Category:Athletes in Classical Antiquity. - Themightyquill (talk) 17:19, 21 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Themightyquill: fine! Can you please organise the photos in the "YEAR Summer Olympics athletics competitors" categories; meanwhile I change the category names? --Ruthven (msg) 17:34, 21 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ruthven, and sorry for the late reply. I'm not sure I understand your concern with the Olympics athletics competitors or Category:Olympic athletes. Not only does the description in that base category specify that it should be strictly for track and field competitors, but so does every individual Category:YEAR Summer Olympics athletes category. Any files or categories placed in there for other types of sportspeople have been miscategorized, likely because the category name has been somewhat ambiguous. Rather than me going through each of those 29 categories, lets rename them to match their intended content, (ie. Category:YEAR Summer Olympics athletics competitors). Those who mis-categorized images and sub-categories will be notified of the change and are likely to make the changes themselves. Thanks for your patience and help with this. - Themightyquill (talk) 19:03, 29 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Global replacement for possibly incorrect Japanese ribbon bar[edit]

The allegedly false version, which would be globally replaced
The current version
CommonsDelinker: Replace File:JPN Daikun'i kikkasho BAR.svg with File:Order Chrysantemum Sash.svg across all Wikimedia projects. Reason: The previous image was an inaccurate representation.

I am making this global replacement request on behalf of Uaauaa, who alleges that the former image is a completely false representation of the award. The current solution is to overwrite the file, but this is against COM:OVERWRITE. I am going to link this discussion at Commons:Village pump, en:Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Orders, decorations, and medals, en:Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Japan. I will also give notice on similar pages across affected projects. Guanaco (talk) 20:41, 23 July 2017 (UTC) I have added notices to every wiki that would be affected and has a WikiProject Japan. For Japanese Wikipedia, notice was placed at ja:プロジェクト‐ノート:軍事史. Guanaco (talk) 21:14, 23 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Please indicate whether you  Support or  Oppose this global replacement below.

Comments[edit]

@Nihonjoe: Interesting. If you look at the picture (bottom left) from Cabinet Office, the 略綬 is actually a pin. My guess, based on another cabinet order here, the 翼 refers to ribbon bar, in which the regulation states that you must wear the ribbon bar that is associated with the ribbon of the award with the 略綬. This would explain the appearance of the original image. I will confirm this later. Alex Shih (talk) 08:00, 29 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Alex Shih: @Nihonjoe: I guessed that your confusion is confusing Japanese "略綬(ryakujyu)". "Ryakujyu" in Japanese legal terms means rosette. The ribbon bar is "制服用略綬(seifukuyou ryakujyu)". The pictures and regulations presented by Alex Shih belong to Rosette. And, "翼" is the golden part of this. There is no provision for combining both. Therefore this is a mistake.--uaa (talk) 19:47, 29 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Uaauaa: I'm not confusing anything. So far, however, all you've presented is text which may or may not support your claims. You have so far failed top provide any image evidence supporting your claims. Please focus on that. ···日本穣Talk to Nihonjoe 20:13, 29 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Nihonjoe: It would be you who first asked for evidence at the official Japanese site. There is no image on the official site. I can only find such images(File:Takedanomiya Tsuneyoshi.jpg).That is the upper left.If you can not read Japanese and can not understand without images, you will not qualify to discuss this matter at all.--uaa (talk) 20:55, 29 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
If you think that this picture is valid proof, you are confused.--uaa (talk) 21:06, 29 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Uaauaa: You misunderstand how things work. The burden is on you to prove why things need to change. You are the one making the claim that the current image is incorrect, so you need to prove it. I don't have a problem if both images are kept on Commons, but if you are wanting to replace an image, it's on you to prove that it needs to be done. ···日本穣Talk to Nihonjoe 21:44, 29 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Additionally, you need to stop overwriting File:JPN Daikun'i kikkasho BAR.svg. Until this discussion is over, you need to stop doing anything with that file. ···日本穣Talk to Nihonjoe 21:52, 29 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • My apologies for participating in this discussion so late. I think the discussion has not covered an important point, which is the purpose of these types of images used in articles. They seem to represent the components that belong to a particular honorary Order , and to distinguish the class, if any are designated, within that Order. If a rosette or other pin is worn on top of a ribbon, that will depend on a country's military tradition and public custom, but that is not practical for the type of image you are discussing, and those peculiarities can be discussed within each article. The source that Alex Shih discussed is fit for that purpose.

A good example of how these images are used can be seen in the Order of the Precious Crown article here: [1], which refers to the official descriptions here [2]. Furthermore the decorations of class within awards change. A Japanese example is given here [3], and look to this WP article to see how the components of a class within an Italian award, and the images to represent them have changed here [4].

The image being disputed in our discussion relates to two Orders, one with a collar, and one with a rosette seen here [ http://www.gov-online.go.jp/useful/article/201704/1.html#section2], and you have already referred to [5]. To return to my original point, which is how well the disputed images represent the regalia components in a particular Order, then the image that contains the ribbon and the rosette is useful for understanding the regalia of the 大勲位菊花大綬章. It does not seem like there is evidence that any ribbon is associated with the 大勲位菊花章頸飾. Furthermore, if you look at how these types of images are used in different Wikipedia articles, they seem to be used as an icon for particular award, not how they are supposed to be worn as a ribbon on a particular public service uniform (e.g. Military, police dress uniform etc), and they seem efficient as icons for that purpose. I hope this adds to the discussion, by looking at the matter from a slightly different perspective that has been discussed so far, and with the general reader, across the lifespan in mind. what's the anti-SVG sentiment?[edit]

I just noticed that it's not possible to request this tool file replace raster images with SVG, even though that it's the superior and preferred format for non-photographic content, as explicitly stated throughout this project. It says it is to "prevent WWIII" - this isn't 2006. I don't know of anyone who thinks that PNG version should be used when superior SVG files are available. So who exactly is against these files being replaced? For example, this tool could be used to clear the many categories like this – Commons:Top 200 images which have a vector version available by usage. Request for change in bot treatment of category redirects[edit]

There is a problem with category renamings requested through this page, where the proposed new name already exists as a category redirect to the old name. Example: recently, the bot changed Category:Zoey to be a category redirect to Category:Zoey (Left 4 Dead). However, Category:Zoey (Left 4 Dead) already existed and contains {{Category redirect|Zoey}}, so now we have two redirects each pointing to the other in an infinite loop. When I raised this with Steinsplitter (quite a while ago), he responded that "It is generally up to the users to delete the target category/to prepare the category's so that the bot can simply move the category." (Emphasis in original.) This is technically correct, I suppose, but the fact is that many users fail to do this, and the bot does not check. My proposal is simple: before redirecting Category:XXA to Category:XXB, the bot should check whether Category:XXB is an existing redirect to Category:XXA, and if so it should abort the edit (with some appropriate error message). --R'n'B (talk) 18:15, 18 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

We could also add a new parameter to the template and if this parameter is set the bot deletes existing pages. GPSLeo (talk) 13:52, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
