Your most memorable shot 2020[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I hope you, your familiy, and your friends are well during these difficult times. I wish you all the best for 2021 and I can't wait to see what your most memorable shot of 2020 looks like.

Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.

Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.

If you're interested in joining this meeting, please sign up on the page below:

Also, don't forget to post your question(s) prior to the meeting on the following page in order to ensure a good and fruitful question-and-answer session:

I'm very much looking forward to this event and I hope you'll be able to join.

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:53, 15 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

In Soviet Russia is not Humor in Russia[edit]

[1] - it's not actually Humor in Russia, it's Humor about Russia, but you won't hear those jokes inside the country. It would arguably be insulting, except that Russia isn't Soviet any more; but they still don't make these specific jokes. --GRuban (talk) 04:10, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

GRuban@ Yeah, Category:In Soviet Russia covers something resembling an ethnic joke, except the butt is not the nationality but the state, more or less. Political humor, perhaps? Darn if I know. I knew the redcat that it had was useless, and it seems to me almost every category ought to have at least two parental cats. I have every confidence someone, somewhere, can handle it better than I did. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:40, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

incorrect address/wrong building being used in an article[edit]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_talk:51_W75_St_9th_Av_jeh.jpg is actually at 76th St and is incorrectly being used as the location of the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Krim_siblings Danny Rathjens (talk) 23:07, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you kindly, @Danny Rathjens: you are correct and the error is all mine. Well, someone else might possibly have misled me by mistaken coordinates, but if that is so, it's still my fault for not checking. I have repaired the error in the Wikpedia article, and begun the repair here in Wikimedia Commons. I shall also check Wikidata, where another record of the information might possibly be incorrect. Thanks again; having uploaded thousands of pictures with urban locations I am grateful to anyone who can catch my errors. For that matter, it's possible I'll be able to get to that location tomorrow to shoot the correct location. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:47, 3 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:341 Columbus Av 2021 jeh.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Reminder: Commons Photographers meeting tomorrow[edit]

Just a quick reminder: the meeting with large format-photographer Ben Horne will happen tomorrow, Saturday, March 20. If you haven't done yet, please consider signing up for the event and add your questions to this page. This will be our first virtual meeting in 2021 and I'd be super happy if you could join. Interesting category you added[edit]

Hello,

I noticed that you added Category:Anthropomorphic pareidolias to Category:Princess of Hope. This opened up a whole new array of categories that I did not know about and will explore further. So thank you! Best, Krok6kola (talk) 16:11, 14 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Always pleased to help, @Krok6kola: ; this is the kind of thing I find when a picture that I'm recategorizing for another reason has a strange category that sends me into previously unimagined parts of our vast category tree. My way to this one was even more indirect; one of my old pictures had been categorized by another editor, whom I followed into other changes that led me here. Deep rabbit holes can be found anywhere and lead us everywhere. Jim.henderson (talk) 01:39, 16 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Category discussion warning

2016-12 Black Lunch Table at BRIC has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

This image doesn't show the Hotel Pennsylvania, at 7th Avenue and 33rd st, it shows the old Hotel Taft building, today the Hotel Michelangelo, at 7th Avenue and 51st St. That's why I removed the "Category:Hotel Pennsylvania" from it. User:jamesluckard (User talk:jamesluckard) 02:20, 20 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ah. Thanks, @Jamesluckard: I wasn't paying attention, misremembered my location, and let myself be misled by a not very close resemblance. Drat; I must rename, recategorize, and adjust coordinates. That's what I get for letting dumb things like this happen. Good thing someone's awake; thanks again. Jim.henderson (talk) 02:50, 20 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Question abortus a beautifil photo[edit]

Hi Jim, i Just saw a beautiful photo you made. Can I ask you a question about it? Martijndejong (talk) 12:47, 16 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Jim, are you there? Martijndejong (talk) 13:07, 16 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, @Martijndejong: I'm a bit busy this morning, trying to knock off some items before going out to snap some pictures. Go ahead; I'll answer when there's time; probably several hours from now. Jim.henderson (talk) 14:32, 16 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jim, thank you very much for taking the time to follow-up up on my question, great to hear from you! It's about the photograph you made of the red Roosevelt aerial tram over the water. Can I use it to make a wallpaper of it and put it on a wall in my office room in my house? The picture is really great, great colours and I really like the composition! I was wondering, do you have a original high resolution file for this purpose? I would be more than happy to pay you for this, since I think it is worth it! Kind regards to you in New York (New Amsterdam ;) from the Nerherlands! Martijndejong (talk) 18:17, 16 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Oops! After a busy day I forgot! Yes, @Martijndejong: you can use this photo for any purpose you like, good or evil or whatever. Anyone can; I gave away my rights years ago. It would be pleasant if you gave credit to "Jim.henderson via Wikipedia". No, I do not have a file of higher resolution. I did not reduce the resolution to upload this picture. What you see, is what you get. Jim.henderson (talk) 02:02, 17 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
