J. Kurtz and Sons Store Building[edit]

Just a note, the image posted for the J. Kurtz and Sons Store Building is not the correct building. The building pictured (with applebee's in the base) is across the street. the attached image is the correct building.

This means anyone anywhere can use this photo for anything without asking further permission, without payment, and without credit. If you do wish to credit me, it should say, "jim.henderson via Wikipedia". Perhaps you would like to upload a picture of the subject pastor, releasing it as I released mine. Thanks. I thought of this target on my way to Port Morris and thought, oh, this can't wait to winter when the southing of the Sun will shade much of the facade all day. Parking the bike, I noticed that the opposite buildings were low enough to keep it in sunlight, but what the heck, it's a good time. Maybe one day I'll return from Westchester on a train and get off in Harlem on the western platform for a high shot. Or just climb the station stair. Re: Cat and cop[edit]

Thanks for your comment on my arrest by the licensing police. My first thought was "what, it's a public monument!" But I get it. You say that it is "rarely possible" to find the owner of a recent copyright on public art? Then these just don't get into Wikimedia? Or is there any workaround? You say "we have millions of pictures with much worse categorization." How would I find these photographs to help with the categorization of them? Also, I am glad to hear from a fellow human editor. I have posted comments a couple of places regarding categorization, and haven't received any replies. Do you feel like taking a look and replying? Slightly busy this evening, @Drbones1950: so I'll just address the licensing question for the moment. Sometimes a fellow Wikimedian thinks the subject important enough to do research for which I lack patience. That's how the King Jagiello Monument got in. Polish interwar copyright law, Italian fascist copyright law, American law both under Buenos Aires Convention and Berne Convention and a few other items were carefully compared. Also en:File:Rockefeller Center statue side view.jpg which was only US law but had other complications. I've never heard of a case where one of us snapped a picture and then sought, found and persuaded the person with the rights, though it probably has happened. Incidentally, we do everything better if we put each other's userpages on watchlist and butt into their discussions when we have something useful to say. As in Wikipedia there are topical Projects for places, etc but they are far less successful than in WP. Probably because we have far fewer active editors. Uncategorized pictures are plentiful, @Drbones1950: and many occur in big bunches. The richest lodes are the daily uncategories, for example Category:Media needing categories as of 1 May 2015. I don't work these very much because, being completely uncategorized, they take more thought and offer fewer items of interest to me. I get more from Category:1913 books and the like, because they already group similar but poorly organized items. City cats like Category:Buildings in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania are similarly rich. Usually, if we start somewhere in the category system that we know, and work our way up and down and across, we find many items that have much work to be done. Bayonne Bridge redecking[edit]

Yeah, it's not like MTA who fully release the bountiful works of their staff photographer, Patrick Cashin. I've been busy the past month, partly with Wikipedia things like coaching at Museum of Modern Art en:Wikipedia:Meetup/WikiArte/MoMA 2016 tomorrow) handling pictures from the OHNY photo contest, after spending a week in San Diego. I am unsure of finding time to bike out to Kill Van Kull, one side or the other, before further big transformations. Life is full of hard choices, when there's so much fun to be had in the city. More a fan of civil engineering, but yes. Indeed, two hours ago at a meeting on 14th Street of astronomy buffs who are also railfans (New York has a club for everything) I learned that the Nostalgia Train will be running on the 6th Avenue Line Sundays in December. I haven't ridden subways very much since getting my Citibike key, but might get a chance at this. Also tomorrow I'll return to 14th Street for the Wikimedia hackathon. Busy, busy. Dates on NYPL Detroit Publishing postcards.[edit]

Hi, this just popped up on my radar, and the date seemed early to me. Looking at the source archive page, the "1898" in the date field of the file description appears to have been haphazardly scraped from a blanket "1898-1931" probably applied to the whole collection. My many failures were not at all the fault of the interface. Working in familiar geography will make it much more efficient than my old ways. I complained before getting enough experience . It opens on the last seen location, which is usually the best guess. Perhaps this uses a cookie. I tagged several Montreal pictures, and a few New York City ones. Jumping that distance is less tedious than crossing an ocean, and usually I don't even have to cross a river. I do hope you can ameliorate the impact of the watch limit bug by one method or another, pending repair. My friend @Pharos: had it even worse. Bonaventure station picture renaming[edit]

Hi Jim,

Just a quick notice that I requested one of your pictures for renaming. You might have been a bit confused indeed because this is the Lucien-L'Allier metro station, not the Bonaventure station as you first mentioned in the title (it's true that both stations are close to each other though!). The station sign is not that easy to read in the picture, but you can have a look at the location data that point right to the Lucien-L'Allier station.

Photo of antique washing machine in Kentucky ... Maytag page[edit]

Question of identity

Dear Jim,

I submitted a suggestion for deletion, as there is an error in labeling on the part of the museum (according to the geo coordinates, it is the museum in Madisonville, KY.) As a Maytag historian, I can verify that the machine pictured is absolutely NOT a Maytag artifact. The first Maytag machine was the "Pastime", produced in 1907, and looked nothing like that in the photo.

If you have a contact at the Hopkins County Historical Society in Madisonville, perhaps you would be so kind as to advise them, and agree to the deletion of the said photograph.

Thanks @Bradross63: I know nobody at the museum; was just killing time before the Total Eclipse later in the week. Errors in labels are not normally grounds for deleting a file and I do not intend to do that. Rather, such errors are grounds for correcting the description and sometimes the filename. Technically I could say I have no evidence that you know what you're talking about, resist stubbornly, and keep the filename and description on grounds that we have documentary evidence it is Maytag. That is not my plan, however, as I do not put great faith in the Museum's label. Instead I intend to change the description and rename the file. I shall also remove it from the en:Maytag article. Drat, you're right @Taterian: Our Civil War categorizing is not among the best in Commons, and a couple other pictures misidentified other Pickett charges as being the famous one at Gettysburg. Don't even mention it! It was a pleasure to get acquainted with you and I already plan to draw on your unquestionable knowledge while dealing with the Civil War files and categories which are as you so rightly pointed out, "not among the best in Commons," which is very regrettable. And the NYPL itself sometimes makes mistakes as you can see here, Category:Samuel Blachley Webb. Last but not least, the Generalsandbrevets.com is now perfectly accessible and navigable through the Internet Archive at The Generals of the American Civil War and The Brevet-Generals of the American Civil War. I use these both sites a lot recently since all files without proper sourcing are getting deleted within seven days after nomination regardless of their usage in wikis. Could be worse, @Taterian: at least it ain't the USMC. Civil War is not a specialty for me, as it seems to be for you, so I seldom go very deep there. I do a lot of diffusing of old books, digging out pictures like the one you spotted me mishandling. My deeper dives are into my dear home town and its suburbs, where many new pictures are my own. Anyway it's pleasant when going to WM / WP meetups to identify myself as not just a Wikiphotographer but a "cat wrangler", or when meeting library and museum people, as a "Wikimedia curator". ✓ Done Usually if we have only one or two pictures of a subject, I make no category, thus saving time which can go to handling more old pictures in more old books. However, if another user such as you, @E4024: is confused by that practice, I can make an exception such as Category:Thomas Johnson (Kansas politician). Suburban neighborhood in Manhattan (Yeah, right)[edit]

Cleaning out Category:Manhattan and its parents and children is something I do occasionally. For one thing, tourists intending to visit Manhattan often put all their pictures in there, including ones snapped when coming and going. This style of street arrangement, far as I know, is used nowhere in NYC except small parts of western Staten Island. Other nearest places are in Essex and Bergen Counties and bits of Hudson County. More distant, eastern Nassau and northern Westchester. Without figuring out the wind directions and airport approach paths for the hour on EXIF, there isn't much hope. Or even with.

NYC building identification[edit]

Do you recognize File:Paolo Monti - Serie fotografica (New York, 1965) - BEIC 6361487.jpg or File:Paolo Monti - Serie fotografica (New York, 1965) - BEIC 6346994.jpg? They were taken over 50 years ago. The original uploader believed that this one was related to Category:Museum of Modern Art (New York City), however I've looked up and down 53rd and 54th streets and don't see any present day structures that have a dark congregate-type exterior with grating and features set at 45° angles. It doesn't look like anything in the MoMA sculpture garden either. Perhaps it was something MoMA-related or was near MoMA, but has long since been torn down and built over? The photographer also took shots of Washington Park and the Financial District in the same 50+-year old collection, so it could also be a building farther downtown. Hah! Sometimes we find exactly the right person. Five years later, I got a job nearby and habitually sat on the wall in front of Black Rock, the en:CBS Building to eat my lunch. Seeing the pictures I wasn't sure, so checked the building on the Upper East Side that was affiliated with Metropolitan Museum of Art when we had a Meta:Wikimedia New York City meeting there. Nope. So, north facade or south? No, this is the west, 6th Avenue side. I'm shocked that we have no good picture to illustrate this building (the Monti ones are artistic, not illustrative). Monti seems to have worked on a ladder or platform; he must have been about five meters above ground to make the perspective on the reflected building across 6th Avenue. Alas, it seems my 15 minutes of fame are up. I met Angie Gonzales, Queens reporter, in Downtown Flushing. She got some action footage and some words, called in to the studio and arranged for a live interview on their morning show. Yipes! But, several hours later, Valerie the morning booker Emailed to say, no, they can't use me but the stuff Angie got will appear. Presumably cable TV subscribers saw that, but I don't have cable nor know anyone who saw the show. So, I'm back down to being just one of the real people. Puzzled me for a minute, @DanielPenfield: as the Herald Square Building isn't particularly famous. Slowly the bank building with the columns, and the distant building with the Bell logo, came together in my mind. Only three Manhattan telephone exchange buildings are skyscrapers and somewhat white, and I worked briefly in all of them. This one was NYTel HQ at the time, 1095 Avenue of Americas. Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right.
