Former BMT Jamaica Line station sites[edit]

Why do I have a feeling that the File:Jam Av 160 St jeh.jpg is in the same boat as 168th Street (BMT Jamaica Line)? Do you have any evidence the combined Taco Bell/Pizza Hut restaurant was the old station house? ----DanTD (talk) 12:03, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No. There's no reason to think any picture I have uploaded so far, apart from the 144th St powerhouse (thanks for correcting my hasty categorization) shows any remnant of the elevated line. If my captions suggest such a thing, they too should be corrected; I only intended to show the sites (ie locations) because that's all I found. Today I hope to upload my last Jamaica batch including one pic that I think shows scars in the sidewalk where the 168 St northeastern stair landed; got some retouching, geotagging etc to get through before that. Nothing about your captions made me think that. It was the image of the building itself, combined with what I've seen at this link from NYCSubway.org on the corner of 165th and Jamaica that fueled my suspicions. I was kind of hoping to take my own pic of that site if I ever got back up to New York. Allrighty; no problem. I uploaded the last of my Jamaica Ave and nearby pix an hour ago, with categories subject to closer inspection. As I sought (in vain) better vantage points for powerhouse pictures a man came out and walked north but didn't reply to my greeting and query about the demolished elevated line, so the building is used for something, presumably to power the new underground line. Alas, I didn't carefully read the articles before joining the biker gang that morning, so didn't know the significance of the 165th Street building. I also forget but anyway it's good to see large categories properly diffused. I especially noticed the city school ones; eventually the city high schools will be ripe for borofication. Meanwhile my Thursday bike trip to Manhattan Beach produced little, but the pipeline has many July pictures and I'm heading out to Park Avenue (cars banned today) and probably Flushing tomorrow. Yeah, splitting the high schools by borough would be a good idea. Speaking of "borofication," I thought about doing just that to Category:New York City Subway mosaics. Must happen, all right. There's also a stylistic break; those after about 1930 are mostly much simpler. Anyway I'm glad proper thought is going into these questions. Hamburger stand at "42nd Street Station"[edit]

(tps) I believe it was the Times Square station, on the concourse level, near the shuttle, but I could be wrong. The full title of the photo would seem to imply that it was the Grand Central station, since it talks about the 2nd Avenue Subway relieving overcrowding on the Lexington line. Heh. This came into my smartphone just as a fellow biker gangmember downshifted while climbing out of Roosevelt Island and snapped her derailleur hanger, so I was busy rigging the bike so it could be at least walked to the 63d St line's station to go to the shop on Amsterdam Avenue. Yeah, all the above occurred to me when I found the old picture. The place seems familiar; I probably saw it in the middle or late 1970s when my young mind was quick but focused other matters. I have even tried to place it in the IND stations but can't find a good location in my more recent memories. So yes, we are caught between a vague (for me, anyway) feeling for Times Square and the similarly vague but contrary Second Avenue hint. Jim.henderson (talk) 22:25, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Stamford is strictly my fault; the Wizard did it right and later I munged the template and didn't check. Good going with the Rockaways. Well, a cat for Edgemere? I guess so. I also failed to properly fill Category:Buildings in Queens, New York City. Ain't gonna do it today, must soon walk two miles to an astronomy lecture but if the math as presented doesn't call for my heckling, umm, helpful suggestions I mean, I might find time also to use my netbook to write about my power failures on the road yesterday, which were both human and electrical. No appointments tomorrow; hope to adjust and upload more ToNH photos then; Sunday will be on the road mostly in The Bronx, with possible help from en:Transportation Alternatives unless they ask for volunteers for Triboro porter duty. I thought there would be more from Edgemere, but evidently not. Outside of the Rockaways, I see you finally got a pic from Queens Village. And Town of North Hempstead pics coming? Wow! There were quite a few sites I passed up taking pictures of (mostly in Roslyn), that I'm still kicking myself over. Good. I usually end the Information template with the curly braces on a separate line, partly to remind me whether they're there or not. Not this time. Got some pix in The Bronx yesterday; uploaded the two most urgent by WLM from my phone this morning and the rest will wait. No more photo expeditions until Thursday (thinking of Upper Raritan Valley) and I ought to finish processing Albertville / Roslyn before then. Plans for another North Shore expedition, none. I was nearby about a month and a half ago, and three hours ago I decided not to join a group bike ride tomorrow to Flushing that will probably come even closer. I'll decide in the morning whether to change my mind, and keep it in mind for the future if not. No, I don't know another candidate for the job. Fort Hamilton Pkwy Station on the IND Crosstown Line?[edit]

I should probably address this to User:Youngking11 as well as you, but something just doesn't seem right here (File:Fort Hamilton Parkway.jpg). The only Fort Hamilton Parkway station I know of is on the IND Culver Line, and while it serves the G Train, this image is listed as an IND Crosstown Line station. I agree; having used that station a few times in the past couple years and seen that this is the color scheme. It's probably labelled on the basis of having arrived on the G, so when the talk pages of the user and image produce no answer in a couple days it should be changed. Oof, still sore & tired from 60 miles of mostly flat bicycling yesterday to Putnam County followed by many hills and not many pictures and must run errands today. I'm glad to see this was taken care of, more or less. But do you know what station serving the G train I'd like to see more of? The one formerly known as Long Island City - Court Square (IND Crosstown line). All three sections of Court Square station need multiple photos in their galleries. Unfortunatley on my last two trips to the New York Tri-State Area, I never even got a chance to go to the city, other than going through it to get to and from Long Island. The closest I came was Rockville Centre in my previous trip, and you can see the results of that one in the Rockville Centre, Baldwin, and Bay Shore commons galleries, among others. --DanTD (talk) 01:45, 18 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
We'll see. I used that station this spring but the pictures had little illustrative value. Yesterday morning I got some rest and made my netbook able to handle E-mail offline but at Noon word came that my main business for the day wouldn't happen so I took a bus into downtown Pittsburgh, walked across the Allegheny River during an unexpected shower, and found myself in lovely photographic territory in East Allegheny. And me with only my little camera phone, but after an hour warm sunlight gave me pleasant pictures of the Elks Lodge, Carnegie Library, Childrens Museum, Calvary Methodist Church and other interesting places. Wore myself out and with the last dregs of battery power got some nice snaps of the First Avenue trolley station.
Today will probably give more rest and during the week at home with the big computer screen I'll be geotagging, retouching and uploading, and maybe the poor little camera phone got good stuff despite its low resolution and poor coverage of lowlights. 36th Street Station on the Brighton Line?[edit]

I just discovered another image of a station which doesn't seem like it's on the right line (File:36th Street Entrance.jpg). Actually I didn't know about the request; just thought it would be a good idea. Every day or two after the storm I looked up while crossing 57th St on my usual way to and from the grocery, dentist, bike shop, office supply shop, whatever. One fine day the shot was there, waiting for me. I ought to buy a bigger camera for pedestrian occasions like this, when a bigger sensor behind a longer zoom with wider numeric aperture would let me snap such things without looking for a steady support. 79th Street Station on the Sea Beach Line?[edit]

I just moved another one of your images of subway stations to a category, but I discovered a huge error about it. It claims to be on the BMT Sea Beach Line, but unless it was an old name of an existing station, there's no 79th Street station on that line. Your geotag indicated it was on the BMT West End Line, so I moved it there. Also, there are now 100 individual station categories for the New York City Subway stations in Brooklyn category. ----DanTD (talk) 19:49, 24 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Dan. I often mix up the names of those two lines, and caught another such error before uploading that batch. Obviously this pic shows the elevated line, not the entrenched one. IRT stations give me similar trouble south of Chambers Street, for similar reasons, but fortunately sharper Wikiminds often handle Manhattan stations. My geotags are more reliable than my words, even when the camera's GPS failed and I'm manually tagging, because that work puts my mind in geographical rather than railroad mode. Thank you for all the cat wrangling you've been doing. When the notion to diffuse an overloaded category strikes, usually I tell myself, "Self, DanTD is much better at this, and you should settle for uploading more pictures for him and other thoughtful editors to handle." Ooh, I got a copy of AIAA Guidebook to New York City and a new 30 years old bicycle whose bottom gear doesn't work yet, among other goodies. Much to study. The new AIA Guide has a lot of good stuff in it - but if you have an older one, don't throw it away, because some stuff got dropped. I find that it's still useful. Have fun with the bike. (30 gears!! 30 years, 18 gears on my new Pugeot touring bike from probably early 1980s, having sold the older, larger Panasonic last week. For a few years I have been on a two bike system. My little 3-speed Brompton Bicycle folder serves short or mixed mode trips, especially photo expeditions, and a big touring bike can keep up with my over the hill biker gang's suburban joyrides. The Panasonic Sprite, however, was getting to be too big for my progressively enfeebled old body, especially on stairs. I was going to replace it with a new, much lighter one but a friend of a relative heard of my intention and gave me his unneeded Pugeot. After one lap around Central Park to get to know its merits and shortcomings I adjusted various parts and it should work properly when weather and local chores allow me on the road again. Twice the weight of what I would have bought new, and geared for younger legs, but half the weight of the mighty Panasonic.
