New Brooklyn Categories

I finally created a category for East New York, Brooklyn. A lot of the Brooklyn categories really should be renamed, though. ----DanTD (talk) 22:09, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

Good going; it takes a lot of shoving to make things neat. I see my pix of Bronx and Bklyn stations moving, and police precincts. My glance shows two Brooklyn neighborhoods named as in "New York" and if others also need renaming I'm sure you'll figure it out. A great many moves, though each fairly easy to decide, would be diffusing the school pictures among new Category:Education in New York City by Boro or, even more ambitious, in the State or at least LI by County. Me, with my injury mostly healed I've been on suburban roads getting much sweat and many pictures. I'm actually thinking of renaming some places "*******, Coney Island," including a few that I've already tagged for renaming as "********, Brooklyn." Of course, these would only apply to the neighborhoods in Coney Island. As for the Coney Island cat itself, I can't decide if I want to keep it as is, or change it to "Coney Island, Brooklyn." "Rockaway" is a whole other story. I want to split that between Queens and Nassau County. ----DanTD (talk) 02:52, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

Oof, I thought by sloughing off in the summer I could avoid thinking about such things, but now I'm being flattered that the people who are still paying attention want my opinion. All right; for the Coney Island cat, my preference is to name the category with "Brooklyn". For the CI subcats, no opinion. For Rockaway, seems to me the category should only be Queens, and anything on the other side of the border should be in a cat such as "5 Towns, New York". Has the Rockaway cat collected any ToH pix or places anyway? Jim.henderson (talk) 01:18, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

About four of them, and Five Towns already has a category in the main Wikipedia page. I can see the idea of the Rockaways being just for Queens, but I also like the idea of Rockaway neighborhoods having names such as "********, Rockaways." Hmm, yes, one in East Rockaway while I was chasing the LIRR Rockaway Branch. I guess that one and the LIRR terminal shoot down my idea that the Rockaways do not overlap ToH. And an earlier pic that's about the border (with French housemaid in foreground; there really are such people in NYC). No, as a North Shore boy I am much confused in this neck of the woods and hope an industrious cat wrangler will make sense of it. Hmm; last time I was in Far Rockaway, this Spring, I chanced upon a former colleague who lives there. No, I don't expect to look him up until I visit again and can ask for a personal guided tour. Before you archive this thread, I'm letting you know that last night I finally created categories for Fort Greene and Stuyvesant Heights. It is pleasant to have two of New York's industrious and judicious cat wranglers (one operating more in Manhattan, the other more in Outer Boros and eastern suburbs) participating in my little talk page. Perhaps we would get more attention for the questions if we moved to a more public forum, for example the discussion page of the NYC or NYS category. Splendid work; I have been thinking Ft Greene was long due and the others are also welcome. Perhaps some the pix I put into Downtown actually belong in Ft Green. Me, I spent the morning unproductively at en:Hamilton Grange and more productively at en:CCNY and my photoprocessing backlog is now ten weeks. Sorry to be getting back so late. I think the name already given to the category will also serve well as the article gallery name. There's no reason for them to differ unless you want the gallery to focus clearly and permanently on the rehab work. If so, the word "Rehabilitation" or some synonym should be affixed, with perhaps the year as well. Jim.henderson (talk) 01:18, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

Good work. It organizes the photos into a clear explanatory sequence. A few words in captions are misspelled and a few others are slightly odd in English. This weekend I expect to look again to see what still needs doing but tonight I'm tired from a long bike ride with friends and tomorrow has other plans. Another goof; 199th Street, not 99th

I just took another look at File:BQG 73 Av 99 St jeh.jpg, and it looks like it's time for a rename to File:BQG 73 Av 199 St jeh.jpg, since that's where it actually is(Yes, I saw the geotag, but that's not what makes me want to rename it). I usually see that bridge from Francis Lewis Boulevard, when I'm in the city. Do you want to do the honors, or should I tag it for renaming? ----DanTD (talk) 12:42, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

The automatic E-mail alert of your comment came to my cellphone while I was searching elusive targets in Bushwick, or rather hiding from a brief rain shower under a tree there. Reading the talk page itself on the tiny phone screen is difficult, so an hour later I told my 20 year old niece, "A nice old Wikibuddy in Florida says one of my recent pictures has the wrong street number, but I've been uploading Rockaway and he must have mixed up the numbering systems." Nope, you got it right; it's an old pic. If we don't tell my niece, I can pretend she's sincere about how smart her silly old uncle is. Anyway, error is repaired as recommended. Category:Juan Pablo Duarte Square

Hi. A week or so ago, while doing something else, I noticed that this category didn't have any photos in it, so I put in on my list, since I'm down in that area fairly frequently these days. I finally took some shots last week, but didn't get around uploading them until today, only to find that there were two of yours already there! And they dated from 2008!! A little sleuthing, and I realized that you had just moved them into the cat recently.

I point this out to (A) Show the great minds think alike, and (B) Just to let you know (again) that I'm not stalking your contributions. If I had come across the cat a week later, and seen that it was already populated, there would have been no reason for me to go take more shots. Anyway, best to you - I hope your injury has healed. I'm glad if someone walks behind and catches me when I slip, which I surely did back in '08. Sometimes I too return with what I think is a prize and discover a pic that someone else made long ago with superior sunlight or whatever. And sometimes I see my photo vanishing from an article it has long dominated, because someone a couple years later applied better understanding and did a better job. That's how the cookie crumbles.

This park was a target of a Commons:Wikipedia Takes Manhattan photo contest, which left a great many categories without pictures and vice versa. Even with prior preparation it's difficult to deal precisely with a sudden spate of photos. I don't know whether the contest will have a 2011 edition. Injury is all healed, thanks; body is merely old and decrepit, much like the mind but I expect to kick around the streets quite a few more years.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks. I seldom revisit my picture descriptions until the upload notice trickles to the bottom of my watchlist, some 50 or 60 hour later. This lack of category, being an actual defect rather than a mild shortcoming, should have got my attention but in summertime my attention wanders more. Yesterday while I was pedaling northeast with a biker gang through unfamiliar territories in the north central Bronx and southern Mt Vernon my phone kept playing its E-mail tune but I saw that much of the traffic was Wikimedia matters, which are never urgent enough to call for breaking formation. After lunch I said goodbye to the group who were returning to the South Bronx and Manhattan, and used solar navigation and inquiries among the natives to find Glen Island where I got some shots of en:Travers Island and the Kleine Deutchland Castle (didn't know there was such a thing) which will eventually be processed and uploaded. Pictures in the park

I have discovered that both Central Park and Riverside park tag their lampposts with the number of the nearest cross street. CP adds a W, C or E for West, Center or East. Today I've started using those numbers for photos. Jim.henderson (talk) 13:24, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

I knew CP did that, but I didn't know about Riverside. Glen Island is nice - for many years it was the site of my extended family's annual picnic. I wish, however, that the "casino" was a less mundane building. Did you get any shots of the ruins of Fort Slocum, over on David Island? Beyond My Ken (talk) 16:01, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Riverside Park's lamp tags are less prominent, being merely embossed stainless steel rather than painted as well to bring out the embossing. I ought to examine more of them and see whether the rest of the numbers are as easily deciphered as the street number. Bridges and some other structures in Central Park have a seven digit label but I've got no clue as to their meaning.

Never having seen Glen Island, and knowing nothing but its approximate location, I only caught the most obvious targets including Travers Island which I already knew existed. Ruins on nearby islands were not prominent, so I (or someone else) must return in winter when foliage falls away and reveals the artifacts of the past.

Drat; yesterday I was examining my pix made while walking along the length of 20th Street on a cloudy afternoon in May and saw that you were there several weeks earlier with brighter light and sharper eye and snapped up all the good objects: Churches, Police Academy, whatever. Fortunately I'm now recovered from my accident, and able to bike to the Outer Boros and nearby suburbs where alert, thoughtful photographers on foot can't catch me. Delightful. No, my experience and talent as a photographer are not great, but I am a good bicycler and this helps me find many things to photograph in places on or near my little island. My experience as a dabbler in astronomy also helps in guessing when the Sun will shine correctly. So, from your Facebook page and other online evidence you are a Finnish banker in Denmark and a frequent visitor to New York, and I hope my beautiful teenage blonde niece in Brooklyn looks as good as your picture when she is fifteen years older.

I just had a thought tonight; Do you think it's possible that a percentage of the customers who use the Pizza Hut at File:Steinway Railway Woodside barn jeh.JPG might be railfans and trolley junkies?
