Your best shot 2019[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

It's early 2020, which means it's time again to look back at photographs taken over the course of the past 12 months. As always, I'm curious – what would you consider your best shot of 2019 and why? I invite you to share your image and your thoughts in order to provide others with the opportunity to celebrate, learn, and enjoy:

Your best shot 2019

Thanks for all your effort in sharing your vision of the world with others under a free license!

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 20:19, 19 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Commons workshop for NYC community gardens[edit]

Hi! I proposed a workshop for the upcoming GreenThumb GrowTogether Conference (conference Apr. 4-5, CUNY Grad Center; workshop Apr. 4, 2:45-4:15PM) on using Wikimedia Commons to document NYC community gardens. Some folks from Wikimedia NYC recommended you as a possible cofacilitator. Would you be interested and available to cofacilitate? TrMendenhall (talk) 20:13, 26 February 2020 (UTC)TrMendenhall[reply]

Sounds like fun, TrMendenhall. Count me in; I have put thousands of pictures in WP including hundreds at WP events, and there's room for more. Odd, This does not mention time of day, but I expect to be there early anyway to coach and so forth, from beginning to end. Jim.henderson (talk) 21:02, 26 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent! And thank you! I'll be in touch later today. TrMendenhall (talk) 14:59, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Welsbach Electric = Edo Aircraft?[edit]

Is there any chance that the Welsbach Electric Building you took a picture of in College Point is the same building as the Edo Aircraft Corporation factory? If so, I'm going to group that and the Library of Congress images of the building into a new category. ----DanTD (talk) 00:19, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

No idea, DanTD. It's a factory district where this was the most impressive factory, that's all. Not planning to go there again; have other places I haven't seen in years if ever. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:23, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Spuyten Duyvil Bridge pic[edit]

Beyond My Ken (talk) 03:23, 16 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Beyond My Ken. Always nice when they give proper credit. I never thought this one of my better pics but I guess it fit the somber mood of the story. Now that the virus has shut down the pleasant in-person meetings of Category:Wikimedia New York City perhaps for months, and even impacted my suburban bicycle trips, I expect to resume uploading this year's pictures and sorting old ones to make them more findable. I might even find time to make a thoughtful collection of my favorites. Has the panic thrown you out of work or otherwise given trouble? Jim.henderson (talk) 12:50, 16 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
So far, no, but it's likely that at least one of my gigs (in June) will be cancelled. Beyond My Ken (talk) 04:19, 17 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Commons Photographers User Group: Meeting on May 30, 2020[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I’d like to invite you to our group’s first Virtual Meeting on Saturday, May 30, 2020. The meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Please take a look at the meeting page and add your name to the list of participants if you’re planning to attend.

Hope to see you in a week! All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 17:09, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Affected:

Yours sincerely, Buidhe (talk) 16:22, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I am much relieved that the nomination is withdrawn. Not so much for my own picture as for the better ones by other photographers. Jim.henderson (talk) 14:21, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Commons Photographers User Group: Meeting on September 26 and other stuff[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I've got a quick update for you, containing three items:

  • I’d like to invite you to our group’s second Virtual Meeting on Saturday, September 26, 2020. As last time, this meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic. If you'd like to present, please add your name and the proposed topic to the list on the talk page.
  • Also, I'd like to start a conversation about how we should be sharing responsibility for the user group going forward. I'd love to get some help when it comes to organizing things and I'm convinced that we can achieve more if a couple of people helped with coordinating stuff.
  • Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has asked me to spread the word about their latest survey: Universal Code of Conduct Survey. The goal is to create a safer environment on Wikimedia projects and the Foundation gathers feedback prior to coming up with a first draft.

Hope to see you at the Zoom meeting in September!

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 19:03, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Photo opportunity[edit]

I didn't look before I leapt when I created Category:Feinstein's/54 Below. It's only got one image and that looks like that will be deleted soon. Also, the Wikipedia article, Feinstein's/54 Below, could use an image. Perhaps you can fill in the gaps on one of your upcoming photo shoots. -- DanielPenfield (talk) 17:29, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, @DanielPenfield: I saw it in WikiShootMe a few weeks ago but the map said it was inside a skyscraper and I saw nothing from outside. That's because coordinates in Wikidata put it two blocks off the correct location. I just now corrected WD and may have a chance at the photo tomorrow or Sunday. Many other things to do. Jim.henderson (talk) 17:43, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Recognize this skyline?[edit]

Has a midtown feel, but there's a building with a cupola on the left that doesn't quite match 240 Centre Street, a building with an ITT logo on the right, and a gothic-looking tower on the right suggestive of, but doesn't match Woolworth Building. -- DanielPenfield (talk) 09:08, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

No luck, @DanielPenfield: can't place it. Fairly busy this year, too, despite staying away from photo targets more than a couple miles away. Jim.henderson (talk) 21:29, 14 September 2020 (UTC).[reply]
It's Midtown, looking west, between 48th and 49th Streets. I didn't pick up on your first hint, but I understand now. Thanks for all of your help over the last couple of years and best of wishes in your future work. -- DanielPenfield (talk) 21:53, 16 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Reminder: User Group Meeting this Saturday[edit]

Dear Commons Photographers User Group member,

This is a quick reminder that our second virtual meeting will take place this Saturday, September 26. The agenda entails presentations about drone photography, about the story behind a featured picture, and about the future of LRMediaWiki. We'll also discuss photographers’ contacts with the Wikimedia Foundation and the election of representatives for our user group. You'll find information about all of this on the event page:

I'm also inviting you to share some information about yourself and your photography work with other members of the user group on our new membership list:

I hope you're well during these difficult times. All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 00:22, 24 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

New to cat wrangling[edit]

Hello, @Peter Glyn: I'm replying here to what you said in your own Discussion Page, to get you accustomed to the many forums we use in Wikimedia Commons. You can read other items in our individual pages to see some of what we've been up to. Besides the individual ones there are also community forums such as Village Pump.
Railways are a topic in which we have much participation. I have done a thousand or so pictures on that topic, though they don't have a particular subcat in my personal category tree. The majority of photos in Category:North Shore Branch (Staten Island Railway) are mine, as you can see by clicking them. I confess this sample reveals my special fondness for defunct and decaying lines, and my scantier interest in rolling stock. Anyway there is much fun to be had.
Yes, Wikidata has an enormous number of locations, acquired en masse from various databases. Most are of very little interest and highly unlikely to be the subject of an article. So, I bike to the ones on WikiShootMe or sometimes the Commons App, and snap the ones that are not stultifyingly boring or ugly. I don't categorize by how interesting the place or how bad my photography; maybe that would be a good idea. Tomorrow I'll join a biker gang to pedal through an area I don't know well; might find some interesting targets.
"Jim I made a big blunder on one photo. I uploaded a plate of food instead of a tavern. Then I replaced with the correct photo and both got deleted. Great! Then I uploaded a fresh photo. It shows linked to the Q number but when you look there, it doesnt show."
Alas, again I don't have time to study properly a fouled up job. I've made similar mistakes many times over the years. You can ask for permission to be a "File mover" which allows you to rename files. I've done a few in the past week or two, to correct minor naming errors. :Well, Peter, time has come to end this one, put a notice in your talk page, and tend to several other things before tomorrow's hours on the road. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:45, 10 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Brilliant. Thank you. I have a big week coming up. Cheers Jim, you have been a brick, Peter Peter Glyn (talk) 05:08, 10 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I hate categories[edit]

Hi Jim!! Longtime no see!! How's life treating you? Can you help me with this category issue? See :File:Haring 03.jpg and the redlinked category People eating fish - how do I turn it blue? Atsme Talk 📧 18:30, 5 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It was at the Boston Fine Arts Museum library, @Atsme: if my memory hasn't yet fizzled away. A fond memory anyway. Hotcat and cat-a-lot are very useful, but one thing they cannot do by themselves is make a new category. For that you must use the Source Editor. My method is:
  1. Go to a sister category such as Category:People eating pizza.
  2. Hit Source Editor.
  3. Copy the whole thing.
  4. Go to the picture.
  5. Click the red cat to create.
  6. Paste.
  7. Edit to replace whatever's wrong such as "pizza" with what's right such as "fish".
  8. Publish, and now use Hotcat to repair whatever is still not right. I'm happy when I get it right in the first three tries.
This reminds me, Hotcat ought to get this feature. Or maybe there's a reason. And maybe there should be a separate Commons:Village Pump for categories as there are for copyright and other matters. Long ago, after a couple years experience, I came to understand and enjoy cat wrangling. It's as easy as herding Wikipedians.
There will presumably be a session or at least a meeting of Wikiphotographers at Wikimedia North America in Toronto, plague allowing. Much to discuss there. Jim.henderson (talk) 22:32, 5 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Commons Photographers User Group meeting on Saturday[edit]

Dear Commons Photographers User Group member,

I'd like to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, December 12. We'll have two presentations: Habib Mhenni aka Dyolf77 will answer the question Do "we" need DSLRs anymore? and Martin Falbisoner will walk us through the making of his featured picture File:Caribbean_Sea_-_Long_Exposure.jpg.

If you can make it, please add your name to the list of attendees to this page:

I hope to see you in three days. Also, I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best for 2021. Your contributions to Commons make a big difference.

Warmly, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 14:22, 9 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Origins of the Jackson Heights Salvation Army[edit]

I've been scanning through a lot of Queens images lately, and I found out that since you took a picture of the Jackson Heights Salvation Army building, I also stumbled upon the same building when it was the First Christian Science Church in Jackson Heights. And there are more than several images of that church back then. ----DanTD (talk) 22:50, 11 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Suggest revising caption of your image File:CI_boardwalk_Sandy_sweepers_jeh.jpg[edit]

Hi Jim.

I'm pretty new to wikipedia, so pardon my faux pas.

This file https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratization#/media/File:CI_boardwalk_Sandy_sweepers_jeh.jpg that seems to have been posted by you currently has the caption: "Civic engagement is conductive to democratization. Volunteering is an important type of civic engagement. Pictured are volunteers cleaning up after the 2012 Hurricane Sandy."

and I think the word "conductive" (defined as "having the property of conducting something (especially heat or electricity): to induce currents in conductive coils.") in the caption should be changed to "conducive" (defined as "making a certain situation or outcome likely or possible: the harsh lights and cameras were hardly conducive to a relaxed atmosphere.").

I would change it myself if I could figure out how to revise captions. I did change the same word in the body of the article.

I hope this helps. Here's wishing you and yours a safe and happy holiday.

CopyrightX (talk) 16:02, 26 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@CopyrightX: I am merely the photographer, and had no idea my picture would be put to this use. Not that this is bad; we Wikiphotogs are pleased when someone finds another use for our pictures; that's why we do what we do. It's just that, theoretically, this is not my department. But what the heck. I only had to do the same as you did. Went to Democratization and clicked "Edit" on the section header. Clicked on the picture, and edited the caption there. And you should do the same if my idea of a correct caption is not a good one.
You see, it's just part of editing the article. Don't worry; you'll get accustomed to how things work. This isn't even one of the really tricky parts, but you'll get there. And, boo-hoo, being an old man I must hide from the virus this winter since it especially wants to kill people like me. Anyway, keeping busy at my keyboard until we get back our freedom to party.
