Use the Translate extension on Template:Welcome

Hi! I ask you to introduce the Translate extension in {{Welcome}}’s i18n, because (I think) you have all the tools and knowledge to do this. The task contains the following parts:

  1. Move Template:Welcome/en to Template:Welcome/i18n (requires admin right),
  2. Move all other subpages to Template:Welcome/i18n/<lang> (bot makes it easier),
  3. Add translation unit markers to the English page,
  4. Mark it for translation (requires translation admin right),
  5. Merge the existing translations to the new system (possibly it can be done with bot – I think all translations use the layout template for now, so they have the same structure),
  6. Change Template:Welcome to use the new pages directly.

The /i18n page could look like this:

<languages />
<onlyinclude>{{welcome/layout

|welcomeHeader=<translate><!--T:1-->Welcome to Wikimedia Commons, {{#if: {{{1|}}} | {{{1}}} | {{BASEPAGENAME}} }}!</translate>

Have you noticed this “tiny” message? --Tacsipacsi (talk) 20:01, 10 December 2015 (UTC)

Tacsipacsi, I did notice and I am sorry I ignored it so far. I will try to get it started soon. --Jarekt (talk) 20:04, 10 December 2015 (UTC)
OK, it’s not urgent, I was waiting to ask you for months, so some weeks don’t matter. :) --Tacsipacsi (talk) 20:39, 10 December 2015 (UTC)
I have just found Special:PageMigration. It can help you in migrating (I don’t know how it works, but it’s probably not new for you. Source code before the next MW update here.) Tacsipacsi (talk) 20:20, 22 December 2015 (UTC)
Tacsipacsi, I began looking at this. I
  1. copied content of Template:Welcome/en to Template:Welcome/i18n, while leaving the original untouched.
  2. Added translation unit markers to Template:Welcome/i18n
  3. Created User:Jarekt/a using a spreadsheet which will help coping content of all other subpages of Template:Welcome/<lang> to Template:Welcome/i18n/<lang>
Could you by any chance create those pages. I seem to have very slow connection today. --Jarekt (talk) 18:16, 23 December 2015 (UTC)
Sorry for the late reply, I was a bit busy around Christmas. Why should we copy the pages instead of moving? (There are copyright problems unless you merge the edit histories after the whole change.) --Tacsipacsi (talk) 16:23, 27 December 2015 (UTC)
It is a little bit like working with template sandbox templates. You do not want to edit the live page create what you need off-line and than turn it on. I agree that ideally you want to preserve edit history, but merging edit histories sounds way to painful. I do not know a good solution to this, just like I do not a sane way of converting one type of i18n page to another. --Jarekt (talk) 04:21, 28 December 2015 (UTC)
Copied all translations. Shall I mark the English page for translation? --Tacsipacsi (talk) 12:00, 1 January 2016 (UTC)

Regarding the Photos

Hi, the two photos which I did upload: I don't think the copyright is correct on them after looking twice.

Images from Sulitjelma mines

Hi Jarekt! It is true that the files I uploaded with pictures from Sulitjelma have no license tag yet. However I follow the instructions in this section:Commons:OTRS#If you are not the copyright holder. I am now at step 2. I have already cleared with the copyright holder (www.nordlandsmuseet.no) that the images can be used by us. The thing is that it takes time to upload all those pictures, but after it's done I will follow the instructions further ahead. In other words get the museum to send e-mail confirming the license.--Frankemann (talk) 17:29, 5 January 2016 (UTC)

Question regarding how to properly credit photographer for photograph they have permitted to be used

Dear Jarket

Apologies for asking what might be an obvious question.

The photographer Julie Boileau has granted permission to use a photograph she took at a public event in Paris for a Wiki profile of a female artist.

(She originally posted this photograph to Flickr where it can be downloaded by anyone from the public).

I am having difficulty discerning how best to label this photograph and add it to the profile of the artist Heidi Quante.

Here is the Flickr link referenced above: https://www.flickr.com/photos/131713753@N08/23639470685/in/album-72157659901899814/

Immense Thanks if you might provide guidance on the proper procedure for uploading and labeling this image

Thank You Hugo — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hugo8888 (talk • contribs) 16:35, 06 January 2016 (UTC)

Hugo, the easiest way would be for Julie to change the license on Flickr to CC-by-sa-2.0 or cc-by-2.0. Than we could use standard tools to transfer it. If you alert me I can easily do it. Otherwise Julie will have to granted permission in writing and send it to OTRS. Please read COM:OTRS for more details. --Jarekt (talk) 17:05, 6 January 2016 (UTC)

Image deletion/license question

File:Nitrogen elimination.jpg, which you deleted based on your {{No license since}} tagging, had a {{NoRightsReserved}} tag dating back to 2006. The tag was placed by the uploader, who asserted it was his own work. At that time, this tag was valid...the invalidation of new NoRightsReserved, with default falling over to NoLicense, appears to be for post-2011ish uploads only. Could you double-check if there is some detail I'm missing? The file was transferred to commons from en.wp after 2011, but I'm an admin there and can see its older history if you need any further verification. DMacks (talk) 21:56, 10 January 2016 (UTC)

DMacks, I restored it. You are right we should have noticed the fact that this image was under a fine license on EN-wiki and was just transferred to the Commons. However the uploder should have noticed that the file ended up without a valid license template especially since I notified him about the issue and {{NoRightsReserved}} explains exactly what will happen. --Jarekt (talk) 04:09, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for all that (and your prompt response)! DMacks (talk) 14:19, 11 January 2016 (UTC)

Ji Jaretkt: I could use some help uploading an image for amy andersen's page. she emailed me a photo for use specifically on the wikipedia page and I need to follow the correct protocol to get it to stick. thanks '

The correct protocol is to read COM:OTRS and ask amy andersen to ask the photographer who took the photo to send Permission to OTRS. --Jarekt (talk) 03:43, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

Hello, I added trademark tag that's a logo of a company. What's the copyright violation here?--Aynamahruti (talk) 12:59, 15 January 2016 (UTC)

Aynamahruti, Trademark tag is not a license tag. We need verifiable information from the copyright owner of this file about what copyright license to use. Please see also COM:LIC. --Jarekt (talk) 13:05, 15 January 2016 (UTC)

I use that tag

Public domain
This logo image consists only of simple geometric shapes or text. It does not meet the threshold of originality needed for copyright protection, and is therefore in the public domain. Although it is free of copyright restrictions, this image may still be subject to other restrictions. See WP:PD § Fonts and typefaces or Template talk:PD-textlogo for more information.
is that okay?--Aynamahruti (talk) 13:43, 15 January 2016 (UTC)

Templates

Hello, Jarekt. I'm writing to ask you about this edit and other similar cases. I don't know why are you saying that the file lacks a license, as I clearly see a CC BY-SA 4.0 template on the page. Why was the template put on the file, and the user warned about it?

If it was a mistake, I'd appreciate if you could write that to the user, as he's a newbie and a participant on a local contest of us, and both he and we are confused about what happened.

Thanks in advance for your help. --Racso (talk) 06:18, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

Racso, thanks for alerting me to this problem. I usually check each file tagged by a database search for files missing licenses, before tagging it as "no license" but missed this one. I left a note to the user. --Jarekt (talk) 15:47, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

17:55, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

The company asked me to add their logo to the page and supplied the logo. They do not have any Terms of Usage on their site, however. I had thought the non-free logo tag (As used for the logo on the Trion Worlds page would suffice, as it should be considered fair use of a logo to represent the company visually.

What further steps do I need to take to avoid deletion?

Thank you.

User:Baraqorn, Commons does not accept Fair Use files, but en-wiki does so you can upload it there. This logo could also be {{PD-textlogo}}, but that means that we claim that there is not copyright protection on this logo, which might not be OK with the company. A 3rd rout is for you to read COM:OTRS and ask the company to pick some license and send a permission to OTRS to use this file under that license. --Jarekt (talk) 20:47, 15 January 2016 (UTC)
USer:Jarekt, Thank you for your help. I have one more question. Can the company choose "Fair Use" as the license they claim they want to use on this image when they send the permission email to OTRS? Or will this not work because the logo was uploaded via commons? Baraqorn (talk) 19:55, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
User:Baraqorn, "Fair use" is a US law explaining why we do not need permission from the company and to use fair use you do not need sending permission to OTRS. Files using Fair use are often scrutinized to verify if they still meet required criteria and removed, if they do not. Commons once successfully uploaded is more permanent. --Jarekt (talk) 20:01, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
User:Jarekt, Thank you again for all your help. I have uploaded a version of the logo through en-wiki as you suggested, and I believe I have correctly appended the correct permission language to the file. Baraqorn (talk) 00:01, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

Template:PD-old/lang

Hi! I see, you have deleted Template:PD-old/lang... can be, that this is why Template:PD-old appears only in English? Fauvirt (talk) 17:38, 19 January 2016 (UTC)

{{PD-old}} appears in several dozen languages. If you look at template documentation, it says that translations are handled by {{PD-old-text}}. If you would like to add additional languages add them there. Translations in subpages of {{PD-old}} are no longer used after the merge with {{PD-old-70}} and should be removed. I will work on removal subpages already handled by {{PD-old-text}}. --Jarekt (talk) 17:51, 19 January 2016 (UTC)

Okay. I understand now.  Thank you. for answering. Fauvirt (talk) 19:01, 19 January 2016 (UTC)

Can you help, why didn't appear my translation neither in the table or in the templates? Fauvirt (talk) 19:00, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

Fauvirt, {{PD-old-text |X=70 |deathyear=1923|lang=hu }} gives "

A szerző halálozási ideje 1923, ezért ez a mű közkincs abban az országban, ahol elkészítették, és minden olyan további államban, ahol a szerzői jogi védelmi idő a szerző élete plusz 70 év vagy kevesebb." and seems to be OK, and this file displayed in Hungarian shows the template in Hungarian. May be it is matter of purging the pages. --Jarekt (talk) 19:12, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

hmm.. today it works...  Thank you. again! Fauvirt (talk) 14:49, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

The photo was taken from the film itself. At the time, it listed as film in public domain. I visited the website and it was all reconfigured without copyright information. If you think there is any violation, please delete. Take the opportunity to take a look at Category: Rocketship XM (film) which are other movie files that I took. Any questions about copyright, delete because I do not want confusion about copyright. Currently only carry own photos rightfully so. Thanks, --Paulo RS Menezes (talk) 22:31, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

Paulo, You might be correct about this image being PD and I do not have any reason to think that there is any violation. All I was alerting you about is that you did not do your homework before uploading the file and did not provide andy license templates that might explain this case. All files are required to have a com:CT license template. I am unfamiliar with licenses related to DP movies, but you can consult Commons:Hirtle chart, check other files that should be using the same license or ask at Commons:Village_pump/Copyright. --Jarekt (talk) 12:42, 21 January 2016 (UTC)
See as it was now. If not enough, delete. I'm currently very little time to search for a different form of licensing. Thanks. --Paulo RS Menezes (talk) 11:47, 22 January 2016 (UTC)

Missing copyright tag for Jüchtwind1.jpg and Jüchtwind2.jpg

Hi, thank you for bringing to my attention that two files I uploaded, File:Jüchtwind1.jpg and File:Jüchtwind2.jpg, are apparently missing valid copyright tags. I am certain that these two files are covered by freedom of panorama under German copyright law, and thus can be hosted on Commons consistent with the "current policy on Commons [...] to accept photos of artwork and sculptures that are covered by freedom of panorama in their source country". I tagged both with {{FoP-Germany}}, which I believed to be a valid and sufficient copyright tag. If I made a mistake or there was a change in policy, please tell me. Shinryuu (talk) 19:08, 22 January 2016 (UTC)

Shinryuu, {{FoP-Germany}} are great but FOP templates are not considered to be license templates since they only cover the object in the photo but not the photograph itself and they are always accompanied by License template from the photographer. If you are the photographer just add a license template of your choice. --Jarekt (talk) 03:32, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
OK, I didn't know that, thanks for telling me. I am both the photographer and uploader, so I've added {{PD-self}} and removed {{No license since}} in hope that this is OK. Shinryuu (talk) 10:10, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

16:38, 25 January 2016 (UTC)

Dear Jarekt, I am a complete novice in relation to the usage and editing, including uploading of files, to the Wikipedia. So please help me in achieving my objective, which is the uploading or adding a photograph of my father (Solowij Victor Sylvestrovych - Archbishop Varlaam) to the existing pages (subjects)or entries in relation to him in the Ukrainian and English Versions of Wikipedia. It would seem that an attempt to upload a photograph by another user of Wikipedia was unsuccessful due to some breach of copyright rules. The photograph in question was supplied by me from my family records and taken by me some 56 years ago and edited by the user who tried to upload it to remove the background .

See "(cur | prev) 06:35, 19 July 2015‎ CommonsDelinker (talk | contribs)‎ . . (5,236 bytes) (-83)‎ . . (Вилучив файл Arch._VARLAAM_-_копия.jpg, оскільки він був вилучений з Wikimedia Commons користувачем Ellin Beltz. Причина: Copyright violation, see [[:c:Commons:Licensi) (undo)" I hope that the Ukrainian language used in the quotation above does not complicate the matter.

I simly have no way of proving the origin of the photograph, considering its age and thus address the copyright matter, but I would like it to be reinstated in the article and added or uploaded to the English version of a the article. My attempt to upload a similar photograph of my father, which obviously was taken by a professional photographer, and is of similar vintage, in respect of which I most certainly have no knowledge of any copyright, was simply that - an attempt, and I even had no idea of how to upload it to the relevant Wikipedia articles. So I can not have any objection to its removal. I have other photographs that I could use, but, from my point of view they are not as good, or appropriate, as the two photographs subject of this discussion. I would be most appreciative of your assistance in achieving my objective of uploading or reinserting, as the case may be, one of the two photographs in question. Thank you very much for your interest and advice. Jaroslaw Solowij — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jaroslaw Solowij (talk • contribs) 00:19, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

Jaroslaw, I sorry you have trouble uploading files. I looked at File:Varlaam Archbishop of Ukrainian Autocephalic Orthodox Church.jpg and deleted File:Arch. VARLAAM - копия.jpg and they both have the same issue with unclear copyrights. You will be able to upload images that meet one of the conditions:
  1. You took the photograph and can choose any license you want. I would suggest {{CC-zero}} or {{CC-by-4.0}}.
  2. Someone from your family took the photograph and you unherited the copyrights. You can pick any license you want and I can help you add proper templates.
  3. You know the photographer and can contact him/her. Than the photographer can pick any license they want and send the permission to OTRS. Read COM:OTRS for details.
  4. File is in the public domain for one of many possible reasons, like known author died more than 70 years ago, or it was anonymously published more than 70 years ago, or meet conditions of {{PD-Ukraine}} or {{PD-Australia}}.
Let me know. If one of those photographs or other photographs you have, meet those conditions and I will try to document them. By the way, I was helping few years ado with some file upload and there is a Category:Collections of Józef Piłsudski Institute of America in Ukrainian which you might find interesting. From what I read about your father he might be an author or subject of one of those documents. Unfortunately, The files are mostly uncategorized, and undiscovered by Ukrainian community as the descriptions is mostly in Polish. Let me know how else I can help you. -- Jaroslaw Tuszynski aka Jarekt (talk) 02:51, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your response, as above. I accept your offer of assistance with uploading a photograph of my father to the existing Wikipedia material on "Соловій Віктор Силвестрович - архієпископ Варлаам (Соловій)" in Ukrainian and a similar heading "Solowij Victor Sylvestrovych - Archbishop Varlaam (Solowij)in English. Because I did take the photograph in question, I will gladly accept your advice and choose the license {{CC-zero}} and in support of this I attach the original photograph taken by me in our family home around 1960

File:Arch.VARLAAM original.jpg
original photograph taken by me at home

and the same photograph retouched by me to remove the background

File:Arch. VARLAAM.jpg
the same photograph edited (retouched) by me

This is the photograph (file) that was removed from the article by user 06:35, 19 July 2015‎ CommonsDelinker (talk | contribs)‎ . . (5,236 bytes) (-83)‎ . . (Вилучив файл Arch._VARLAAM_-_копия.jpg, оскільки він був вилучений з Wikimedia Commons користувачем Ellin Beltz. Причина: Copyright violation, see [[:c:Commons:Licensi) (undo)

This is the best that I can do in relation to uploading (reinstalling) this photograph to Wikipedia and I would very much appreciate your further help in this regard in adding the proper templates (whatever that means?) How do I actually upload the photograph to the articles in question? And last, but not least - I certainly appreciate your information on the Category:Collections of Józef Piłsudski Institute of America in Ukrainian. I certainly found this information most interesting and will slowly read through the attached documents, even though they are in Polish - I can understand the spoken language, but reading is a little more difficult! As a matter of interest, one of the documents is a letter from Symon Petliura the Ukrainian Head of State to Adij Liwickij the Prime Minister of the Ukrainian Government in Exile (he was my Godfather). Thank you so much for this material. Hoping to hear from you soon Jaroslaw! -- User Jaroslaw Solowij — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jaroslaw Solowij (talk • contribs) 09:28, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

Jaroslaw, I think what you should do is to reupload the original "Arch.VARLAAM original.jpg" with you as an author, the date on 1960's, and {{CC-zero}}. I can check it, but if you have any trouble with people questioning the validity of the license you can also send official permission to OTRS. It might be a good idea to do it anyway so the there are no problems when someone start questioning it some years from now. Once we have one in the system than you or someone else can retouch it and reupload under a new name, or I can resurrect the deleted one.
About Category:Collections of Józef Piłsudski Institute of America in Ukrainian. The documents are all in Ukrainian, but descriptions are in Polish. If you read any of those documents, it would be great of you could make sure they are categorized under people's categories, for example File:Symon Petliura - Pismo do Szefa Ludowych Ministerstw Ukraińskiej Republiki Ludowej Andrija Liwickiego - 701-007-001-406.pdf is in Category:Symon Petlura and Category:Andriy Livytskyi categories but there might be other people it is related to. Unfortunately it is hard to figure out which spelling of Ukrainian names is used in English, it is not Ukrainian and often differ from Polish spelling, unfortunately I do not speak Ukrainian and can not categorize those files properly. --Jarekt (talk) 14:09, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

Dear Jaroslaw (Jarekt) I have tried to answer this message from you and apparently failed, because I simply do not know the procedures of editing or talking on Wikipedia. What I wrote a couple of hours ago disappeared and I am attempting to talk again. I apologize for being a nuisance, but with my age of 8o years it is not that easy to learn new things and in particular Wikipedia procedures. I promise to stop pestering you once I have achieved my objective. You must have realized by now that I don't know what I am doing. Your last, very speedy response, as abov, was not seen by me until yesterday. Now I willtry to follow your advice to the letter and upload one of the original photographs of my father that we have in our family records and which was taken by me ore my brother. This I will do next week, after consultation with the family. The photograph that I will upload will have an unsuitable background, which I will remove by touching up the photo after it has been successfully uploaded in the existing Ukrainian page of the Wikipedia. Is this approach satisfactory? How do I ensure that it gets posted in that page? I also need help in sending anything to permission to OTRS. I simply don't know how to do it! Thank you also for the material "Category:Collections of Józef Piłsudski Institute of America in Ukrainian. It is a very interesting materialand I will study it after I have finished with the task in hand, namely getting the photograph in question successfully uploaded into the existing Ukrainian article in the Wikipedia. One final comment. I believe that the English version of the uploaded material on "SOLOWIJ Victor Sylvestrovych - Archbishop Varlaam" has been deleted from Wikipedia because it does not comply with many rules and regulations concerning posting material on Wikipedia. If tha is the case, I will revisit this project (English version) and try to edit it in accordance with the requirements and see what happens. Thanking you again for your patience and wishing you all the best, Jaroslaw Solowij Jaroslaw Solowij (talk) 04:51, 30 January 2016 (UTC)

Jaroslaw, I do not mind helping, especially if the project can gain unique old images. We do not need more photographs of sunsets or erections, but it is rare to gain a historic image of historic individual to illustrate article without photographs. About OTRS: you will need to grab example text from COM:ET, modify the parts in gray and email it to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. The modified text will need to mention license you have chosen (I would suggest {{CC-zero}} or {{CC-by-4.0}} or which file it relates to (You can list file names or say something like Photographs of Solowij Victor Sylvestrovych uploaded by User:Jaroslaw Solowij. You will get quick reply with case number an at some point a volunteer will contact you either approving or with some additional questions. Usually if you are the copyright holder you can upload a file without OTRS, but with old historical images it is safer to send permission, since we do not have many contributors who could have been taking photographs during WWII. Once images are uploded I can help with adding them to articles. Let me know if you need any help. --Jarekt (talk) 05:18, 30 January 2016 (UTC)

Hi, Jakert. Could you please check if the license of the image I uploaded is according to the rules now? Thank you.

It is not clear if the author user:fzuppone is the original designer of the logo. --Jarekt (talk) 17:05, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
Hi, Jakert.

I set the license as I created the image. Knowing that it is not copyrighted, do you know what can I do? --Fzuppone

I added {{PD-ineligible}} for the original design. This should fix it. --Jarekt (talk) 20:18, 29 January 2016 (UTC)

Caltha scaposa

You are the second admin targeting the same two files (see my talkpage). I have forwarded the email exchange (in Dutch) to OTRS in which I request the photographer to upload some not yet published images to wiki commons. I wanted to illustrate the wikipedia article I created before but for which no files were available. He sent me a link to his copyright protected photo's, because he couldn't figure out how to upload himself, and says the images may be used provided his name is mentioned. I then responded explaining wiki needs images without copyright, because third parties that reuse the files cannot be regulated by wiki commons. The photographer now sends me other not yet published photos directly and writes I can use them. I'm convinced the photographer is fully aware that he agrees to not using his copyright for those two images. I'm sure if we force him to fill in forms and declarations, he will withdraw because of the fuss. There are currently no other images for this species and it grows in China and the Himalayas, where not many contribute to wiki commons. Could you please help me out? Dwergenpaartje (talk) 12:08, 1 February 2016 (UTC)

Dwergenpaartje, if you look at the actual messages, I was informing you that you do not have any required license tags and User:Magog the Ogre alerted you that even if you add the license tagswe will still need the permission from Marijn van den Brink, the photographer. Marijn will have to pick a license, I would suggest {{CC-by-sa-4.0}}, and send us permission to use those files under the stated license. You can write the text of the permission, by modifying example text in COM:ET, and send it to Marijn with request to read, approve, modify if needed and send back to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. The files can be specified by name, or if you expect to upload more of his files than you could use "Flower photographs by Marijn van den Brink uploaded by User:Dwergenpaartje", etc. I understand the importance of those files but the current state does not meet the rules agreed on by the community and will be deleted if left as they are. Let me know of I can help in any way. --Jarekt (talk) 13:28, 1 February 2016 (UTC)

Photo copyright

Hi Jarekt, I am contacting you about the article Jerome Coopersmith which was published in Wikipedia main space 2 days ago, after which I discovered that I failed to provide the correct copyright information for the image I uploaded for use on that page. I am making every effort to correct that, but want to check with you that I have completed all the necessary steps.

Someone at the teahouse helped me by changing the status of the copyright to "pending" to prevent the image from being deleted. I also added the tag "cc-by-sa-4.0|Photo by Judy Coopersmith" (brackets removed) in the licensing section. Finally, I can confirm that the owner of the photgraph, Judy Coopersmith, has emailed permissions-commons her permissions form with the license details earlier today (ticket#Ticket#2016020510015656).

Is there anything else I need to do?

Thank you in advance!

Template:Upload campaign header Wiki Loves Monuments finished

Hi Jarekt. You have changed last year all language templates in {{Upload campaign header Wiki Loves Monuments finished}} and changed the year 2015 to {{CURRENTYEAR}}. Now, when going to Campaign:wlm-sk it look odd - its saying wlm 2016 is finished - its wrong there was no wlm 2016 yet. Either should be the "finished" template changed or the {{WLM-is-running}}, or the campaing itself. Cann you help me please? Or give some advice where to discuss this issue. Thanks.--LacoR (talk) 12:11, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

Why does it matter? The template is not being used at the moment. I guess you use the "finish" template when the competition is finished, and until then it stays unused. --Jarekt (talk) 03:05, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
I disagree with you. At the moment the template is used. Try this. It is a link from the lists of cultural heritage monuments from Austria at de.wikipedia (example). Its saying "Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 is closed." But there was no WLM 2016. It was correct till December 31, 2015.--LacoR (talk) 21:14, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
It should be fixed now, although I have no idea how to force purge of this page.
 Thank you.--LacoR (talk) 12:48, 8 February 2016 (UTC)

Tacy Byham photo

Hi,

I uploaded an image on Wiki Commons which has been deleted although the copyright permission request was submitted in early January: Ticket:2015123010016788 Confirmation of receipt (Re: Permissions Wikimedi)

What else needs to happen to get this image back up on Tacy M. Byham's page?

Thanks!

It seems like Ticket:2015123010016788 is waiting for a reply from Tacy M. Byham, as the permission seem to come from her not from the photographer who took the photograph. --Jarekt (talk) 14:05, 10 February 2016 (UTC)

I got these photographs by asking directly to Mrs Magona, you may want me to send you copies of the emails between me, Mrs Magona and her assistant ?

Didn't you notice the {{OTRS pending}} on this page ? Mrs Magona or her assistant will soon send the declaration of consent.

I am really upset about some people "working" on Commons, you guys are really paranoid about licenses and copyright infringement. I consider this deletion request as an aggression and a denial of my good faith. You should wait one week before annoying people with deletion requests when there is a mention of OTRS pending...

PS : If you want to answer, do it on my talk page, I will not add this page on my watchlist, I have others things to do than losing my time on Commons.

I thought that the license would be added when the ORTS would be confirmed. I added {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}} on the four images. Hello and thank you for showing up.

I uploaded the image with the wikimedia wizard. I previously got authorization from Nature's portal for licenses - see below. I realize that I am completely ignorant of the copyright specificities and would enjoy a hand on this. BR Maxorazon (talk) 13:51, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

Maxorazon, the license you provided unfortunately is very uninformative. To paraphrase it: We do not know what it it, but figure out if it does or "does not carry the copyright of another entity" and if not you can use it. The permission sounds like {{Attribution}} license. I am leaning more towards {{PD-ineligible}}. However bigger problem is that figure is so small to be totally unreadable and so unusable. We need a version big enough to read the axis and legend. One other solution would be to draw the figure ourselves if we can find the underlying data, either on the web or read of from the plot. I can help with that. --Jarekt (talk) 13:05, 5 February 2016 (UTC)

I uploaded it to the Theta Kappa Pi wiki but it was deleted because I do not know what tag to put it under, since it was a family member that created it and gave it to me, I did not create it or find it on a website somewhere but he did give it to me to use how I would like. Please let me know what tag I need to put it under so that I can re-upload it for my sorority's wiki. Thank you. File:Theta Kappa Pi Crest.png - 38.69.30.118 02:37, 23 February 2016 (UTC) BindiTKP

User:BindiTKP So you have 2 options:
  1. your brother in law uploads the image and he can pick any file he wants. I usually use {{Cc-by-4.0}} for example.
  2. You read Com:OTRS and ask your brother in law to pick a license and send permission to OTRS. If he does and you let me know I can undelete the image.

Deletion of WalterKittel.jpg

Hi Jarekt, yes, it is a photo of a photo with reflection, and it thus is not high quality. I do have the rights, as this is from an estate that I own and supervise, but go ahead and delete. I should have uploaded this differently anyway. Thanks for the attention. Hundnase (talk) 04:04, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

Hundnase, I am sorry for the results of my attention. Do you know who took the photograph? If it was family, you could have inherited the copyrights and I can guide you through the process. I am a big fan of old unpublished photographs of notable people, but we need to get the copyrights right. --Jarekt (talk) 12:51, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
Jarekt Yes, it's family, and I took the photograph (but it was a bad photograph, as you noted, so deletion would be okay). Is there anything specific we should do for copyright, for a future similar upload? Yes, it's family (we have birth certificate mentioning his name if it's useful). Thanks again for the very friendly response. Hundnase (talk) 16:12, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
File:Pokemon collection.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

  1. image is in Public domain and you know why, then you can point to a specific copyright template for that case
  2. you took the image and you can pick any license you want
  3. someone else took the photograph and you follow steps outlined in COM:OTRS

Licence

Dear Jarekt,

Please can you help?

We have permission from the photographer to use the image of the 12th Duke of Grafton, by Henry Bourne. However, he has contacted us to say that he does not wish anyone else to be able to reproduce or copy this picture.

I spent two hours on Friday trying to find the right licence code for this, and could not.

I would be grateful if you could advise which licence code to use in this instance. Thank you very much.

User:Anashkat, I assume we are talking about File:VF-SHOT-1-205 RT 2V 2 FLAT.jpg. Unfortunately Henry Bourne requirements are not compatible with Commons policies, so you will not find a license template that matches. Also the photographer should send permission to COM:OTRS witch would specify his choice of the license, if the file would to remain. --Jarekt (talk) 15:34, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

Thank you very much, I will contact the photographer tomorrow, and request he seek the correct permissions.

Assumed authors

Hi Jarekt, i'd like to remove some author assumptions generalizing this example. I would go through all user categories and check if there are files having this {{Author assumed}} have this use as parameter. If so i remove the template together with {{Own assumed}}. Does that make sense? --Arnd (talk) 05:42, 8 March 2016 (UTC)

Arnd That does make sense, if you know somehow that the user is the author of the images. {{Author assumed}} and {{Own assumed}} were added to images that did not use {{Information}} and in most cases did not explicitly specify author or source. All we knew was that User:Example uploaded the file with {{Self}} or {{PD-self}} templates, so we assumed that he is the photographer when adding {{Information}} template. If the user is still active and says that all those images were taken by him/her or there are some other way of knowing (like photographer's name in the description) than by all means change the templates, but I do not think we should be removing those templates without additional information. --Jarekt (talk) 12:50, 8 March 2016 (UTC)
Ok, so i will create first a candidates list of files, then somehow proof the concept at some examples and finally start a bot run. --Arnd (talk) 14:34, 8 March 2016 (UTC)

Keep Clean And Run Image

Dear Jarekt I contact you to reply to your observation on the File:Keep Clean And Run.jpg that I've just uploaded. I would like to point out that this image belongs to the category of trademark that, according to wikimedia guidelines, is OK if it is too simple to be covered by a copyright. This is the case. I'm certain that this logo is not covered by any copyright. What I'm requested to do besides using the {{Trademark}}template? --Noemi.silvestri (talk) 16:57, 9 March 2016 (UTC)

All files require a license template and it is uploaders responsibility to figure out which one fits their circumstances. I your case I think it is {{PD-textlogo}}, which I added. --Jarekt (talk) 17:12, 9 March 2016 (UTC)

Hi Jarekt, Just mentioned you on Commons:Village_pump#Commons:Credit_line. Whatever the outcome, we might get some constructive comments on ways to improve the essay. Personally I think it should be a guideline.--P.g.champion (talk) 18:02, 9 March 2016 (UTC)

Template:BANQ media

Hello Jarekt,

I saw in December that you edit Template:BANQ media to transclude Template:Photograph like it was couple years ago. The thing is I changed it intentionaly since it is used for all kind of media from BAnQ : drawing, manuscripts, audio, video, etc. I saw you're AWB user, so you probably have a technical reason to modify {{BANQ media}} and maybe I should multiply BAnQ templates to fit drawing, manuscripts, audio, video, etc. You tell me!

Anyway, I revert your December before noticing you're very experimented on Commons and you probably have a really good reason to do so. Thank you for educating me! Best regards, Benoit Rochon (talk) 15:40, 13 March 2016 (UTC)

Benoit, that template is a nightmare. I'm not a big fan of custom templates, but if you do so: Build it on top of an existing template. This template is a complete mess. Would {{Artwork}} cover it? Multichill (talk) 15:46, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
Edit conflict with Multichill : Just to let you know that I'm about to upload 1,000 photos from the Collection Félix Barrière (with BAnQ collaboration) and again, Template:Photograph is not flexible enough for projects WMCA: have with BAnQ... {{Artwork}} is not good for collector, post cards, manuscripts (...) cases. Should I create multiple templates for BAnQ projects ? Benoit Rochon (talk) 15:52, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
Would {{Art Photo}} work? That's probably the most extensive one we have? If not, what is missing? Multichill (talk) 15:54, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
I first wanted to do our own template to include all cases and make it grow in the future to add more and more details needed for BAnQ projects, but maybe this is a bad idea.
But yes, Multichill, {{Art Photo}} is way better for our needs! Still missing "Collector"; Collection Félix Barrière are press clippings by Félix Barrière (circa 1900) where photographers are unknown. So maybe a field "collector" would be good ? Benoit Rochon (talk) 16:08, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
Benoit Rochon, I did not realized Template:BANQ media was an extension of Template:Photograph in the past so I rewrote it from scratch while trying to keep all the functionality intact. In general it is a total nightmare to maintain large number of infoboxes, especially when we are trying to have uniform look, proper machine-readable markings, micro-formatting, compatibility with mw:Extension:Media Viewer/About, etc. Ideally we would only have templates that use standard Infobox templates or templates based on and transcluding them. Unfortunately, from time to time someone writes a new infobox template for his uploads or some single institution. The easiest way to make sure those new templates are following all the current requirements of infoboxes is to invest time into rewriting them as an extension of an existing infobox. I pinged you about the problem with {{BANQ media}} at Template talk:BANQ media but never got a response. I recently discovered that {{Biohist}} and {{Fundación Joaquín Díaz-Description}} are will also require a rewrite. --Jarekt (talk) 03:02, 14 March 2016 (UTC)

Painting images without artwork template

Hi Jarek, how are you doing? I'm linking up items about paintings on Wikidata with images here on Commons. This seems to go quite well. At User:Multichill/Painting images no artwork template I created a list of images of paintings that don't use the {{Artwork}} template. Do you have some clever bot to convert these?

I use the Wikidata link on the creator and the institution template to compile lists of suggested matches. See Wikidata:User:Multichill/Image suggestions and User:Multichill/Same image without Wikidata. This of course only works if the images use these templates (implicit or explicit). Do you have any idea if Category:Artworks without Wikidata item still contains a lot of images of paintings for which the creator or institution is still missing as a template and could be set by a bot? Multichill (talk) 15:10, 12 March 2016 (UTC)

Multichill, I do not have a bot for adding Artwork or Creator templates. I use Template:Artwork/subst as substitution template to convert from {{Information}} to {{Artwork}}, but afterwards I usually need to do some hand clean-up. As for Creator template, I thought I wrote bot like that some years ago, or maybe just discussed it with someone, I will look tomorrow on a different computer. The idea is to go through Category:Creator template home categories and in each category search for files that do not use creator template. For those files look at each individual "author" or "artist" and see if the name does not match the name of the artist. Some variations would be: "name", "name (\d\d\d\d-\d\d\d\d)", "[[w:name|name]]", "[[:\w\w:name|name]]", "{{w|name}}", etc. Any of those combinations would be replaced with {{Creator:name}}. I did run like this back in the days when we still have ~ 3k creator templates, by running SQL query to find all the files and associated creator page, dumping each file author/artist field into a giant spreadsheet and using excel operations to find matches, and then somehow create list of files which are ready to update with AWB. It sounds like a very convoluted approach now, but It added many thousands creator templates to files. --Jarekt (talk) 02:34, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
That's subst template is really nice! That's a good way to tackle this. Let's see what I run into when I use it.
The creator approach sounds very much like how I now match stuff between here and Wikidata, I just do it fully automated now and offer suggestions as tables here. Would it be possible to apply the same logic to {{Institution}}? Hope you can dig up some code :-) Multichill (talk) 20:51, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
Multichill, for conversions between {{Information}} and {{Artwork}} you might prefer to adjust Template:Artwork/subst or it's clone to map Information.author to Artwork.artist, and somehow make sure that uploaders listed as "authors" move to Artwork.source. Artwork files using {{Information}} with CC license from the photographer should probably use {{Art Photo}}. As for the code, I looked but I do not think I wrote any for this. I think I remembered User:JarektBot/Replace PD-old.py that was working with creator templates to look up date of death and add it to {{PD-old-auto}}. --Jarekt (talk) 14:26, 16 March 2016 (UTC)

Hi Jarekt,

The copyright owner of this image has sent an email to Wikipedia Commons OTRS using the template, It was sent today, 20 March 2016.

As I'm new to editing in Wikipedia I'm not sure whether I'm supposed to change the tag to OTRS Pending 20 March 2016. You mentioned in your message to me that I could just contact you, so could you please either update the license information for me?

Thanks for your help.

:pl help needed

Hi Jarekt, incidentially a user at Forum noticed that the uploads of Abrimaal (talk · contribs) carry a CC-BY-SA license-template AND a CC-BY-NC icon. When I asked Abrimaal about that, he openly stated that he simply didn't find the CC-BY-SA-NC licence-template and that he intends to give permission only for non-commercial use! When I checked his uploads for more of these image, I found a huge number (see User_talk:Abrimaal#CC-BY-NC_icon_at_CC-BY-SA_licensed_images) of such tagged images and also noticed that most of them had been supported by a :pl WikiGrant[90]. Now, I wonder whether this grant doesn't include a free license in its terms. Could you take this case over? --Túrelio (talk) 12:02, 21 March 2016 (UTC)

Hi Jarekt (talk · contribs) and Túrelio (talk · contribs),
Accepting the rules of Wikigrants I agreed for free licence, including commercial use by Wikipedia and related projects of Wikimedia. -SA means that the images must be reused with the same licence and, in case of commercial use, the same value as the author was granted. About 200 uploaded images were refunded about €40 what makes €0.2 per one image.
  • The -SA licence restricts the publisher to sell a publication issued in one copy, containing one image for €0.2.
  • When the edition is 100 copies, the price must be divided by 100 = €0.02 per 1 copy.
  • When a publication contains 100 images and the edition is 100 copies, there is still €0.2 for one copy.
  • Third parties do not know what was the refund for the whole work, and how many images were uploaded. The -SA says that they must be reused with the same licence, that is "copy, modify, distribute for free" by default. When any image is uploaded to Commons, this message is displayed "Thanks for uploading! You can now use these files on wikis, or link to them on the web". There is no message "you can print thousands of copies and sell them". It is unacceptable that one sows, the other one reaps. Will any library or museum allow to take away the collections and sell them?
The additional -NC licence applies only to the attempts of commercial use by third parties without a contract with the author. However all of the images may be published by third parties as free media including printed publications.
Local governments and publishing companies reuse free media in commercial publications, but that's not all. These publications are not issued by authorities who hold the budget, but by acting alongside 'charitable' foundations. Citizens must pay for service in offices, in return the offices get high quality promotional materials for free. If the governments intend to arbitrarily restrict the freedom of photographic documentation of the major objects, let them not count on easy money on free media that serve education and information. For publication in the commercial media the third party should contact the author of the work and offer payment. Only such a sequence of events allows the author to survive and develop as a producer, what includes the cost of of equipment care, software purchases, improvement of the workshop and the time spent on preparing the material for publication. That is why I do care that knowledge, information and half-means necessary for its acquisition (e.g. internet access) were widely available and free of charge for everyone.
When photography (or other media development) is the only work that can be done by a disabled person at the edge of social exclusion with occasional earnings of 20 euros per month, what licence should I use to protect myself and other media producers from starving, acts of crime, madness and suicides?
  • CC-BY-SA gives everybody freedom to make money on someone else's work and nothing to the proper owner
  • CC-BY-NC as the only licence is not allowed on Wikimedia Commons
  • Abrimaal (talk) 22:28, 21 March 2016 (UTC)

Marek, Commons began to operate in 2004 and in the first year there was a lively discussion about NC content, fair use, etc. but then consensus was reached and in last 12 years we are community that accept COMMONS:License policy. I for example contributed ~2600 photographs under CC-BY licenses. Those that do not like those standards go somewhere else. For most people here photography is a hobby not a job, and nobody here will become rich by contributing their work. Sorry there was a misunderstanding about the meaning of the CC-BY-SA license you agree to or the policies of Commons, but if you are opposed to NC licensing you should not contribute here. I am sorry bout your circumstances but this discussion was settled 12 years ago. --Jarekt (talk) 02:05, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

Hi Jarekt, I am a student at the University of Ostrava and I was asked by the university officials to update the university wiki page - thus to upload a new official logo of the university. I have no idea which license should I use. The logo itself can be used freely, but just as any other official logo of any insitution (using Corporate Design) there are certain visual rules that anyone have to follow (the logo simply cant be modified in ways that does not follow the Corporate Design Manual). The only way for a state university to have up-to-date logo on a page about the university have to publish it on the Wikimedia Commons under completely "free use", including that anyone can do what he wants with the logo? Or what is the solution there? Please tell me some simple way how to resolve it, because I havent found any "best practice" example so far (I have seen other universities logos waiting to be deleted...). Do I have to tell the university officials to send the OTRS permission? But then - what will be the possible/desirable licence? Thank you a lot for your reply, kind regards, MayTheGiantBeWithYou (talk)

MayTheGiantBeWithYou, There is some guidance in Commons:Copyright_rules_by_subject_matter#Trademarks. This logo is to complicated to use {{PD-text-logo}}, so there are 2 other options:
    • find a info on the web that says that logo can be used under free license compatible with wikipedia, (unlikely)
    • request University to pick a license and send an email from official university account to OTRS.
Sorry about limited options here, and let me know if you need any help. --Jarekt (talk) 16:37, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

    Re copyright for File:HymersCollegeMainHall.jpg

The licence under which this file is used (Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 License) is given in the Permission link ( http://midnightthewitch.deviantart.com/art/Hymers-College-Main-Hall-372004534) on the filepage, at the bottom of the sidebar. Not sure why there's a problem with this as it is correctly attributed to the user, Wikimedia is non-commercial, and the article doesn't constitute a derivative work as far as I am aware. Hello. The icon is taken from the press kit of Blackmagic Design Pty Ltd. These images are intended to be used for display purposes. In order to confirm this, I contacted the company, and asked them if I may use this image for wikipedia. They said that no permission is required to use these images. I will gladly forward you the email if you wish. I have also sent it to OTRS. Thanks. --TeslaK20 (talk)

TeslaK20, good move about sending it to OTRS, but we still need to figure out what license template is the best match. Please look through COM:CT. usually we require permissions send to OTRS to specifically mention which copyright license they mean. "no permission is required" might mean {{Copyrighted free use}} but it is for copyright holder to decide. {{CC-zero}} might be another option. --Jarekt (talk) 17:42, 6 April 2016 (UTC)

    File:Amphitheater Moraine Park (25054073233).jpg

    Hi Jarekt

I'm currently importing a lot of National Parks Service images from National Park Flickr accounts to Commons. Currently they are all marked as PD licenses even though they should be marked as PD-USGov-NPS (a quirk with Flickr2Commons). I'm still trying to learn how to use VisualFileChange to change the license template on masse. As soon as I have done this I will fix the license on this file and all the others. You can see my work plan here User:John_Cummings/BR_Flickr_accounts, I think it should be around 5000 images once its done. If you know how to use VisualFileChange please could you correct the licenses for the files is Category:Files_from_RockyNPS_Flickr_stream?

Thanks Jarekt, I'll let you know when I've imported some more. Do you know how to add images already on Commons to the Flickr import categories I've created? I made a lists on the page I created but don't know how to add them to the categories without doing it one by one. --John Cummings (talk) 13:06, 13 April 2016 (UTC)
John, You can post a list on some page like User:John Cummings/sandbox, open it with VisualFileChange, than use "append any text" action to add "[[Category:....]]". I also like to use en:Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser for repetitive tasks. Even without bot flag you can do things much faster than by "doing it one by one". If you want to learn it see Commons:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage and Commons:Requests_for_rights#AutoWikiBrowser_access. --Jarekt (talk) 15:07, 13 April 2016 (UTC)

Hi Jarekt. I have sent an e-mail (12 April 2016) to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org under the name [Ticket#2015031710017141] about these photos[111][112][113]. Jafarov gave a permission to upload all his photos into Commons sending an e-mail. Could you please put this ticket number under these photos. --Interfase (talk) 05:46, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

Interfase, my not was about Ilgar Jafarov files that are missing {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} license template. --Jarekt (talk) 11:34, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

Hi, Jarekt. I saw that you tagged these images {{OTRS}}, but I only noticed it after I had asked the uploader for clarification. My concern is that the bylines for these images at http://www.azer.com/aiweb/categories/magazine/34_folder/34_articles/34_metro.html say "Photo: Ilgar Jafarov, Azertaj" (Azertaj is the Azerbaijan State News Agency), and we don't know the nature of Mr. Jafarov's agreement with Azertaj: was he a freelancer, an employee or working on a work-for-hire basis? At any rate, do you think I should leave the {{OTRS}} tags in place, or switch them to {{OTRS received}} pending clarification from the uploader? --Rrburke (talk) 13:34, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

Rrburke you are right please proceed as you feel fit. I usually try not to interfere with other OTRS volunteer handling of their case, but was helping with those files since they were missing license templates. Also under second look it is unclear to me why the permission for those 3 files is from the uploader and not from the photographer. I guess any questions about those files should be asked to both of them. --Jarekt (talk) 13:52, 14 April 2016 (UTC)
Hi, Jarekt. The photographer has offered a blanket permission at [114] to use all of his work. It's just that in this case there is another name on the byline, so I though it prudent to inquire further. As I look at the permission more closely, though, I have a concern: this blanket permission was sent from an address at a generic email provider, like a Russian Gmail or something similar. Should I ask that the copyright holder resend his permission from an @azertag.az @azertag.com address, of should I just leave it alone because another OTRS agent has found the permission satisfactory and approved it? Like you, I don't like to interfere with another agent's handling of a case. --Rrburke (talk) 15:34, 14 April 2016 (UTC)
Rrburke, I think the first permission is OK even if it comes from generic email provider. A work email would be better but that is not always possible and it is uncommon to get permissions from gmail accounts. I do not think it is a fraud. I reread the original permission and you are right it was a "blanket permission"; on my first read I though it covered only 2 websites. In other discussions related to photographer giving conflicting permissions to multiple parties the consensus was: we do not care as it is photographer headache not ours. So my take would be that "the nature of Mr. Jafarov's agreement with Azertaj" is Mr. Jafarov's and Azertaj problem not ours. --Jarekt (talk) 15:57, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

    Pytanie

Boston9 (talk) 04:48, 16 April 2016 (UTC)

    picture upload

I am not sure why my image of Joanne stubbe keeps getting flagged for deletion. Am I not tagging the creative commons license correctly? On the website I found the image on, it says: Images for download on the MIT News office website are made available to non-commercial entities, press and the general public under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial No Derivatives license. You may not alter the images provided, other than to crop them to size. A credit line must be used when reproducing images; if one is not provided below, credit the images to "MIT."

    Gorrkari (talk) 14:31, 20 April 2016 (UTC)

Gorrkari, it is quite simple: each file is has to be matched with one of more license templates, which represent limited set of every license which is allowed on Commons, and in your case "no required license templates were detected at this file page." A closer look at File:JoAnne Stubbe.jpg shows that you are looking for Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial No Derivatives license License, we do not have a template for it because no "Non-Commercial No-Derivatives" licenses are allowed on Commons. I think you will need to find a different image that can be distributed under licenses compatible with Commons requirements. See COM:LIC. --Jarekt (talk) 16:20, 20 April 2016 (UTC)

    Hi Jarekt,

    Thanks for the message.

I tagged the file [[[File:Toytown-pic.jpg]]] as OTRS Pending, as I'm currently awaiting clearance / copyright and licence conformation from Carters Steam Fair. I am in email correspondence with them, but await them completing a licencing email template / on-line agreement. I have today emailed permissions-commons@wikimedia.org with the email thread from Carters, which I'm hoping will be enough to update the copyright on all the files I have uploaded to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Carters_Steam_Fair so far that lack the information.

EDIT 14:41 GMT 22/04/2016; OTRS ticket#: 2016042210012506 has been assigned to my email.

Lee Price, every file on Commons is required to specify a Public Domain tag or copyright license, see com:lic and com:ct. I assume that the image is from US and that it is in Public Domain. For such images we have a handy Commons:Hirtle chart to figure out which Public Domain tag to use. I do not know enough about the source where this image was published to establish the license but I suspect {{PD-1923}}. We usually ask uploaders to only upload files for which they have evidence that they are in Public Domain. Let me know if you need more help. --Jarekt (talk) 18:40, 25 April 2016 (UTC)

I don't know how to add the tag you are requesting. However, the image is Public Domin. See the copyright page at: https://www.nlm.nih.gov/copyright.html.

The image is available here: https://www.nlm.nih.gov/changingthefaceofmedicine/physicians/biography_66.html The copyright information "Public Domain" is available at the bottom of the page. Hello, please don't delete these files, I'm no copyright expert, so I've decided to contact the Shakes & Fidget – The Game support. Main community manager „Holle“ told me that I can freely upload images from the game on commons. I know email approval isn't enought (I've done it couple of times) so I've asked him for further affirming documents. He replied: „Hello Luboš Kadeřábek, Use this imprint: Playa Games GmbH Alstertor 9 20095 Hamburg, Germany Amtsgericht Hamburg, HRB 109725 Umsatzsteueridentifikationsnummer: DE815081395

Playa Games GmbH Alstertor 9 D-20095 Hamburg Amtsgericht Hamburg * HRB109725 * VAT ID DE815081395“ As I said, I'm no copyright expert. I didn't know how to formulate it and how to categorize it. So I just copied and pasted the imprint in the „other case“. I hope the imprint is enought to upload the pictures. If not, please explain me what should I do. I've also uploaded couple of more pictures from this game under the same "license". I don't want these files to be deleted, because I've already used it on an article i'm managing. You can see it here: „https://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shakes_%26_Fidget_%E2%80%93_The_Game“. Thank you. Copyright status: File:Uc color 01.png

Hello, thanks for contact me about the copyright status of: Uc color 01.png. I am new at Wikipedia, so I'm not sure about how the things works.

About the image that I have uploaded, I don´t know how to put the copyright tag neither what copyright status should I use, even whean I actually work in this University, at the Communications Department, so I am very sure that I have permission to use it and the origin of the brand. I asked to the Marketing Department about the Copyright status and they gave me this information, which I included in the description of the image:

"Marca mixta registrada bajo las clases 16, 35, 38 y 41 en INAPI Chile bajo los números 822.761 y 844.323."

Which literally mean something like this: "Registered brand under the 16, 35, 38 and 41 classes in INAPI Chile (is our national institution who regulated the copyright issues) under the 822.761 y 844.323 numbers (this are the ID's assigned)."

I don't know how to translate those terms to a Wikipedia copyright tag option. I am pretty sure that doesn't belongs to the any Creative Common tag. I was going to use the Public Domain tag but then I read that this tag is used when "those whose exclusive intellectual property rights have expired, have been forfeited or are inapplicable", so I discard this option.

If you could gave me any advice and help me to put the right copyright tag I would be very thankful, because this is the right brand, the previous was an older version of the brand and must be replaced.

            Kind regards.

Alejandro Figueroa Escobar (talk) 13:29, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

Alejandro Figueroa Escobar, "Registered brand" I think is related to trademark laws, which we usually handle by adding {{Trademarked}} template to the files. The Copyright information requirement, makes a lot of sense when applied to photographs and scans or artworks or books, but makes less sense when applied to logos, but we still require it. I assume that the University is the copyright owner of this image, so you should read COM:OTRS and request an email from Marketing Department or some other official in the university stating that they are the copyright owners and that they allow the use under some standard conditions (which we call license template). Copyright owners are allowed to pick the license and I would suggest looking into {{CC-zero}}, {{Cc-by-4.0}} or {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}. Let me know if you have mode questions. --Jarekt (talk) 15:56, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

            Jarekt (talk) 11:45, 2 May 2016 (UTC)

Jarekt, I think that adding {{Trademarked}} would be very useful, thanks for that. I still have a doubt about the "license template"; I checked the "Wikimedia OTRS release generator" (it's a great tool, by the way) and I still not sure about the free license that I should use, because we need something like the "Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC BY-ND 4.0)" (people is allowed to use it, but is not allowed to modify the brand) but I am not sure if you allow it as a valid free license. Thanks for all your help. Bye!
Alejandro, Yes we do not accept CC-BY-ND licenses. I agree that others should not be allowed to modify the brand and present it as the university logo, but I think that is handled by the trademark laws. Same with a case of other "university" opening next door with very similar name and logo. CC-BY-SA and CC-BY would require reuses to always mention the name of the copyright holder and would not be convenient for misuse. By derivative works we mostly mean a photograph of a t-shirt, university building or a welcome sign with your university logo. Such photographs would be violating the terms of CC-BY-ND license. The same with a collage of all the logos of universities in Chile that someone might want to create. By the way File:Uc color 01.png was deleted but I can restore it once we agree on a license. In the worst case scenario I can imagine someone modifying your logo and reuploading the image, but such an image would likely fall outside of Commons scope, since it would not be useful to illustrate any articles. --Jarekt (talk) 15:22, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
Jarekt, Can you restore it to edit the trademark information? I think I am going to put the {{Trademarked}} with a Creative commons tag; also, I am going to show it to the guys form Marketing Department, to know if they are ok with that, and ask them to complete the "Wikimedia OTRS release generator", just in case. Are you agree?
✓ Done. I added {{Trademarked}} and Category:Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. By the way, what is wrong with File:Escudo de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.svg? SVG files are usually considered to be of much better quality for logos than PNG, and unless there is an issue with that file the community will likely not downgrade to File:Uc color 01.png and your file will still be unused. If there are issues with File:Escudo de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.svg than it might be better to work with people who draw it, to fix them. Another thing is that if the logo was used since the school was created in 1888 than it likely meets conditions of {{PD-Chile}} and there are no copyright holders. Than you can use {{PD-Chile}} instead of going through OTRS or picking licenses. --Jarekt (talk) 17:11, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
Thanks so much Jarekt! It's not a problem about the .svg format file, actually I am agree with you that .svg could be more convenient. The problem is that the .svg file shown an older version of the brand, that is not allowed (the use of color is not the right one). I could create an .svg file based on my .png file eventually, but for now I need to replace the older version of the brand with the new one, the .png file. I can see that I haven't resolved this issue yet, because the info in the image page says that I have 7 days to define the license (either using "Creative commons" or the "Public domain" tag), so I'll try to complete it.

You deleted two photos I used with permission from Ken Stone at Masterstrack.com 1) I have e-mailed written permission to use them and the entire catalog of Masterstrack for wikipedia purposes. He knows I will use them appropriately to support wikipedia articles about the subjects he covers on his website. All he requests is attribution, which I did. 2) These specific photos were also publicly released for distribution on his website. I provided the link to that statement. You obviously did not read the statement because you still deleted the photos.

We need to get this issue settled now. I intend to use many of his photos. I cannot keep chasing the overzealous administrators on commons each time they notice something I have posted. I wrote to the e-mail address to discuss this and exchange e-mails of permission. Nobody has replied, not in 24 hours, not in a week, not in months.

I have now added a large notice to my talk page on commons. I do not monitor the commons talk page. I am very active on English wikipedia. Please contact me there. Trackinfo (talk) 18:15, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

Trackinfo, Did you try setting your preferences in such a way that you get an email each time someone tries to communicate with you on a Wiki you do not frequent. That is how I keep track of my talk pages. As for your images, as I already mentioned you did not add license templates to your files and all files are required to have a license template here as well as on Wikipedia. My semi-automatic message on your talk page was alerting you to this issue. I see you send email to OTRS (ticket:2016022910007263) but as the volunteer that answered you (on April 20) explained, we need permission from the copyright holder (hopefully something following examples in COM:ET) and if you them than you should forward them otherwise you should ask the copyright holder to send them to OTRS. Please read COM:OTRS for more information. --Jarekt (talk) 19:53, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
You have now received the appropriate release for those photos, so you can reinstate them. Having done so, I also have Mr. Stone's blessing to use other photos from his site. How does he sign a blanket release for such a purpose? I have the same arrangement with another non-profit organization. How does a board member sign off on blanket rights? I asked those questions in the e-mail. The response I found, sent almost 2 months later only repeated the same information from the website. No new information was provided. These are specific questions I asked. Trackinfo (talk) 19:02, 5 May 2016 (UTC)
Trackinfo, Thank you for contacting Mr. Stone. I restored File:ChaplinDouay.jpg and File:WilcockGough.jpg. If Mr. Stone website only carries his photographs he can say something like "I hereby affirm that I, Ken Stone, the creator and/or sole owner of the exclusive copyright of photographs at masterstrack.com .....", or he can lists https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B0uEFY-GO79dWkdEdWRWUEI4SVk&usp=sharing and https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B0uEFY-GO79dM2Y5bXRwSnY4bHM&usp=sharing google drives if he wants to narrow it down to only those. --Jarekt (talk) 20:16, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
--Jarekt (talk) 03:01, 4 May 2016 (UTC)
Ankry (talk) 08:52, 4 May 2016 (UTC)

It is Extraction from the Protocol of Third Soviet-American Session regarding maritime shipping dated first part of 1974, the crew members names in English crew lists and ship's names had to be ajusted on English before 1st of June 1974 as per agreement. The copy of this extraction was given on each Soviet ship to ajust properly ship's name and crew full names in Crew List on English. It is not full text of Protocol.

It is confirm that some Soviet ships had other English name before 1974 what I want to say in the article SS Nezhin. It can assist to search information for other articles about the Soviet ships. As example can be SS Leninsky Komsomol due to this ship possible to search by three names.

Also before 1974 Russian family names and names was written not like today due to was not this Protocol yet.

            For example:

            • Russian name Evgeny and after 1974 Yevgeniy.
            • Name Alexandr and after 1974 Aleksandr.
            • Ship's name Leninsky Komsomol and after 1974 sometimes Leninskiy Komsomol. And new ship with the same name was built in 1980s has exactly name Leninskiy Komsomol.
            • Ship's name Negin and after 1974 Nezhin.
            • The ship Toyvo Antikaynen received name in honor of fin kommunist Toivo Antikainen and now You understand why the ship/s name and person's name have differences.

On my opinion it will assist in information search for articles.

If you will found out this extraction on English can better.

            Good afternoon Dier Sir,

Which lisance can be for the photo of the search via Internet???

I am Ukranian and one Russian put labels to delete on all my private files in articles SS Nezhin and SS Karaganda maden by my father and now in my collection. I can make photo of all this allready first time published photos. Some other photos also my relatives, my family photos in mentioned articles.

I want to pay attention that if You delete photos (I do not say about Protocol of Third Soviet-American Session) from my privat collection it is means that somebody can copy and use it in future. Articles SS Nezhin and SS Karaganda including photos already copied to plenty sources from Wikipedia.

If You will delete Protocol of Third Soviet-American Session (really it is only extraction from the Protocol) or some photos of booklets or books from my collection - it is not problem. But my private photos of the ships Nezhin (ship, 1954), Karaganda (ship, 1919), Metallurg Anosov (ship, 1962), Toyvo Antikaynen (ship, 1970) are first time publushed here and allready copied by others.

Why Russian deletes files of Ukranian???

            Good morning Dear Sir,

Many thanks for Your advise. They still not reply.

Can you clearify the situation: in case down mentioned files will be deleted as historic file, where will this files will stored and in wich country. For me is better to store in in USA and in GB also. It is can not

            • File:Three sisters of Zhukovsky family at monument in honor of the earl MS Vorontsov in Odessa 1954.jpg
            • File:On board of Soviet ship Karaganda in Venezia port.jpg
            • File:Venezia and crewmember of ship Karaganda in 1963.jpg
            • File:A haircut and having on board Soviet ship Karaganda in 1961 or 1962.jpg
            • File:The crew members of Soviet ship Karaganda play dominoes in 1962 abt.jpg
            • File:Soviet steamer Karaganda Between March 1961 and 1963.jpg
            • File:Zhukovskiy family in Odessa in 1954 about.jpg
            • File:Crew members of ship Nezhin on the Plazza San Marco in Venice.jpg
            • File:Two crew members and Syrians on board of Soviet ship Nezhin.jpg
            • File:SS Nezhin in period from 1958 to January 1961.jpg
            • File:Soviet SS Nezhin between May 1956 and June 1958.jpg

And one more. If the Russia Wikipedia said that it is their history - it is wrong. It is history of USA, GB also and I can prove this. It the RUssian say that they are successors of the Soviet Union it is can be discussed. For example: if all men in the Soviet Union passed any military education they were swore to keep allegiance to the people of the USSR. In this case Russia can say that every man in Ukraine or any other ex-republic of the USSR had to follow Russia directions still. I want to say that everything has limit. It is means that I want it will be stored in USA and GB also. Next time I will give very small photos.

            Hi Jarekt,

I do not really understand whether I made a mistake or not... The two uploaded files File:Luxembourg, water tower Gasperich, Jim Clemes (1).jpg and File:Luxembourg, water tower Gasperich, Jim Clemes (2).jpg are published on the net. I am not the photographer, nor the author. Therefore, I wrote an e-mail to the author asking for the rights to publish these files under the CC BY-SA 4.0 license.

As I understood from the Commons:OTRS/de Help-page (section: "Mögliche Vorgehensweise, wenn du ein fremdes Werk noch nicht hochgeladen hast"), I had to upload the files and send an e-mail with the links to Commons to the author of the pictures requesting the license authorization. I furthermore undertsood, that I had to put the subst:OP template to the files.

This procedure might no be right... Meanwhile I read the English version and it seems that I had first to send the e-mail without uploading the pictures??? Could you please tell me the right procedure to follow? What about the yet uploaded files? Regards, --GilPe (talk) 16:48, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

            Files waiting for deletion

Hi, thanks for notifying me on several cases of possible deletion. Let me clarify: 1. "File:Shahnameh Azeri Translation Book Cover.jpg" is my photo from the cover of a book published in 1934 (more than 70 years ago) in the Soviet Union. 2. File:Abbas Djavadi DNA Test Results.jpg as well as: 3. File:Abbas Djavadi Regional, Ancestral History.jpg 4. File:Iranian Population Ancestory.png 5. File:My and Georgian Regional Ancestry.jpg 6. File:My and North Caucasian Regional Ancestry.jpg are ALL parts of my personal DNA test results about my ancestry sent to me by Genographic Project of National Geographic. In the notification and their website they clearly state that they do NOT claim any ownership over the downloads, charts and tables of those results (see: "Terms of Service, http://www.nationalgeographic.com/community/terms/).

I appreciate your concerns. I'm just new with Commons!

            Regards, Abbas.djavadi

            Good Afternoon, Jarekt -

And thank you for the followup regarding the Gilbert Stuart portrait of Samuel Miles.

The portrait is owned by the Washington, DC Gallery of Art - and their policy is the work of art is in the public domain.

            OGL License

Hiya! Got your message about some of the OGL files we've just uploaded. I thought that using the batch uploader a bot would recognise the OGL in that field and update it accordingly? It seems to have done so with most of them. It's taken a bit of time for the whole upload to process (581 will be the final total) and I've noticed the rights data seems to update itself overtime so assumed it was down to a bot doing its thing. Hi Jarekt,

The new logo I downloaded from our Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/ETXCapitalGroup/ - since our graphic designer was not in the office. I have been given permission to do this. You can also contact me on my work email michael.webb@etxcapital.com.

Silverhobbit65 license questions for uploaded selfie

I think I did what you wanted, Jarekt, by putting the cc-by-sa code into my format for the selfie I posted to my User page. I am new to Wiki uploading, and rusty with my HTML, so please be patient.

            Need help with File:Macula.svg

I created an image with a description of its copyright status in plain English. No template exists for this status, which I also mentioned. It's an image with two layers. The bottom layer is a photograph with a "Wikimedia Commons Attribution ShareAlike 2.0 licence." I added a diagram on top of that which is my own creation. Please have an actual human being look at this. Thank you. Zyxwv99 (talk) 16:43, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

Zyxwv99, it seems fine to me. Your "copyright status in plain English" was "Attribution ShareAlike 2.0" which does have a template {{Cc-by-sa-2.0}}. I clarify description a bit. Is there still a problem? --Jarekt (talk) 12:02, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

Copyright Permission for Seneca Rocks Photo

Hello, I work for the Avampato Discovery Museum in the Clay Center in Charleston, WV. We are currently updating one of our discovery galleries to include a small rock climbing wall and we are interested in using your image of Seneca Rocks (File:Seneca Rocks - front 1.jpg). The image would need to be able to enlarge to approximately 20ft in length. Would it be possible to use your image and for us to obtain a file that will be large enough to enlarge to 20ft?

Thank you, Kayte Kincaid Director of Education

Kayte, You are welcome to use my photograph (or for that mater any photograph on Commons) as long as you observe the requirements stated in the license section, which in my case is the attribution requirement. You might also want to read Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia. If you click on the image you will access full 6,048 × 2,326 pixel version. I do not have any higher resolution version so I hope it is enough for 20ft blowup. Be aware that the photograph was stitched from 2 photographs (using Hugin software) and there might be some artifacts which could be visible at that magnification. Thank you for your interest. --Jarekt (talk) 14:16, 26 May 2016 (UTC)

Hello. If you look at the right corner below the picture you'll find a small label which says that it is in "Public domain". [163] I didn't find this category among the licence alternatives. Best wishes Mbakkel2 (talk) 14:47, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

Mbakkel2, saying "Public domain" is not enough. You will need to pick one of the public domain license tags that specify why it is in Public Domain. --Jarekt (talk) 12:52, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
I have found the correct Public Domain tag related to Norway. It is more than 70 years ago since the photographer, Gustav Borgen, died. In fact, he died 90 years ago, in 1926. I am more uncertain about the US Public Domain tag. Borgen worked as a photographer in Oslo and I don't know if or when this specific photo was published in the U.S. Today the photo is included in the photo collection of the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History. I tried this one {{PD-1996}}. Best wishes Mbakkel2 (talk) 15:18, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

Authority control and the National Library of Israel identifier

            Hi Jarket,

We have now the new technique of using wikidata for Authority control. Is there is possibility to add National Library of Israel identifier. May you want I ask someone from the he.wiki to do it? -- Geagea (talk) 10:30, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

Geagea ✓ Done. I added NLI, it should be most visible on pages with few other identifiers. It might be not visible on Creator/Institution pages where we only show top 5 identifiers, which were specified. The top 5 partially depend on your language, so you might see NLI more if you use Hebrew in your settings. Let me know if it works OK. --Jarekt (talk) 13:19, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

Hi! EPH changed yesterday the name to [Hanza Media], as reported by [Jutarnji list] today. Sincerely, I don't see great and urgent need to confirm the rights on coats of arms, logos etc. This new logo was published with the news on the changing name and logo. The news was published in the printed edition and in the on line edition for the subscribers only, otherwise I've should quote it with a link. I suppose that is better to present a new information immediately, if and when it is undiscutible, instead of wasting time with the "bureaucracy". If I'm wrong, suggest me a right way, please, but not in general terms :). If you need to answer, please use my address. Thank you for your care. --Inoslav Bešker (talk) 06:33, 2 July 2016 (UTC)

Inoslav, The message on File:HanzaMedia.gif only says that the image is missing a license which is required for all images on Commons. Usually the only images on commons are the ones created by the uploaders, or created by others but released as Public Domain or under license compatible with Commons. Unless the image falls into one of those categories they are deleted. I do not know enough about File:HanzaMedia.gif to suggest something specific, but one think you can do is to reach out to [Hanza Media] and ask them if logo is aviable under a license compatible with commons, and if so can they send permission to OTRS. Read more at COM:OTRS. --Jarekt (talk) 15:08, 2 July 2016 (UTC)
Dear Sir, I've explained that the HanzaMedia.gif is a logo of the company. I have no time to research if their logo is compatible with this or that, nor I have time to study what OTRS is. So I'm going to inform the [Hanza Media] about the content of your letter. My aim was to inform users, out of that aim I'm completely indifferent whether their new logo will be present in Wikipedia or not. Thank you for the time you've dedicated me. user:Alejandrocastillovazquezvela, please read COM:OTRS that page explains everything and has sample permissions. Let me know if you have any questions afterwards. --Jarekt (talk) 04:34, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

Hi Jarekt, what means NE in this context? Btw, I think that several (or even all) of these erroneous locations do not only use the wrong coordinates format but also the wrong template. If one uses the UploadWizard and manually adds the coordinates then i am sure (s)he refers to the {{Object location}} and not to the camera. --Arnd (talk) 15:00, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

Arnd, Those are temporary categories for 4 earth quadrants. Many files have coordinates but messed up hemisphere marking. It I look at each quadrant separately , I can fix some by just adding hemisphere. As for {{Object location}} vs. {{Location}} I do not know which one they meant, Wiki Loves Earth did not use regular UploadWizard, but a custom one (I think). Why do you think people using UploadWizard meant to add {{Object location}}? The explanation of this field is "Geocode your file to identify where the media was recorded (it is not always useful to enter a location for every kind of media)." It could be more clear but it sounds to me like camera location instead of object location. Also for many nature photos like panorama {{Object location}} makes little sense since there are many objects in the image. --Jarekt (talk) 15:18, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

Ok. --Arnd (talk) 16:51, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

About copyright status for File:Köppen Csc US West Coast.png

Hello, I just saw your note on the copyright status for File:Köppen Csc US West Coast.png. I'm quite confused about the proper status, and would love some advice here, especially since I plan on making similar maps in the future.

I produced the map myself using GIS. I used raw data from government sources to produce it, but this map did not exist before I made it. Since that would make me the creator, would I then have the copyright on the data? And thus, I could release it under a Creative Commons or to the public domain? I've credited the government sources in the file summary - is that sufficient crediting? Thanks! Redtitan (talk) 18:20, 11 July 2016 (UTC)

Redtitan you the creator, but I have a feeling this might be {{PD-Ineligible}}, since I do not think country border shapes is something that can be copyrighted. I would ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright, since people at that forum have best understanding of the law. --Jarekt (talk) 19:31, 11 July 2016 (UTC)

You wrote me about File:Art Drelinger, Billy Butterfield, Bunny Shawker, Stan Freeman, Toots Mondello, and Bob Haggart, Columbia studio, New York, N.Y., ca. Mar. 1947.jpg.

I am inexperienced at uploading images to Wikimedia Commons, so I must have done something wrong. The Library of Congress website says about the collection that contains this image: "Mr. Gottlieb has dedicated these works to the public domain, but rights of privacy and publicity may apply."

However, after I uploaded the file I found the same image already on Wikimedia Commons. There is no reason to have two copies, so please delete the one that I uploaded. Thank you. Teblick (talk) 21:08, 14 July 2016 (UTC)

Wuerzele, please read COM:OTRS, and I think you should forward your email there. The copyright tag that matches would be {{PD-Author}}. --Jarekt (talk) 03:48, 15 July 2016 (UTC)
Jarekt excellent, thank you. I did forward the email and asked the Quia person to forward their email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org as well. About the tag: I dont know if that one is appropriate, since Quia isnt the author, but a user maybe named troybyall/Yazvac from what it looks like in the file's link . I had searched the user to no avail, tried all kind of combinations.--Wuerzele (talk) 13:29, 15 July 2016 (UTC)

            prosba o pomoc

Mógłbyś to uporządkować ? --91.140.58.8 09:31, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

{{Label}} weirdness

Checking the bot run, whenever I go to uselang=ar the ar translation is gone, and whenever I go to uselang=de the de translation is gone. Can you check why is it happening? (Maybe I can too but Module:Wikidata is kind of messy for a non-lua-native) --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 16:31, 19 July 2016 (UTC)

Zhuyifei1999, The {{Label}} seems to be fine since {{Austria|ar}} gives "النمسا" as it suppose to do. I think it has something to do with {{int:lang}} and how it interacts with uselang=ar. I will check more. --Jarekt (talk) 16:41, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
I think I found the reason. Changing user interface settings to de worked. Probably Module:Wikidata/FormatEntity line 27 "mw.wikibase.label" doesn't respect uselang. I'll check for a ticket on phab --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 16:45, 19 July 2016 (UTC)

All these duplicates???

Not sure whether this https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Crown.jpg&diff=202374981&oldid=201210230 was purposeful, or bot done. There are a string of these edits that were redirects with underlying files that you have marked as duplicate that are clearly not.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:39, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

billinghurst, I was just trying to do something with bunch of files, with images, that become redirects. They no longer had license templates. Everyone I looked at was a proper duplicate so the best course seemed to tag them as duplicates without a license. I was planning on then processing them as duplicates. It was not a bot job, I looked at every edit, but I did it with AWB so I could not see the images. --Jarekt (talk) 12:28, 25 July 2016 (UTC)
K thanks. Couple of duds, however, I sort of worked it out later into the run when I got into the unduds. They had had info templates, and it looks as they slowly degraded once people just made the redirect decisions on some. <shrug> All resolved.  — billinghurst sDrewth 13:23, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

Arnd, At the moment one can do edits like this adding {{Object location}} templates to categories. It should be also possible to rewrite Module:Coordinates to follow wikidata sitelinks to d:Q9185625 and to d:Q518287 to get the coordinates that way. I would also like to write some template to query wikidata and put appropriate information describing category. Automatically adding:

I contacted Ciro Amado, whose pictures were deleted

            Hi Jarekt,

I noticed that you commented on Riley's page regarding Ciro Amaro's pictures, which were deleted. Well, I contacted him on his Facebook fan page, which definitely looks official to me, and he confirmed that he indeed uploaded those pictures. He doesn't have a website, unfortunately, for OTRS purposes, but here's his Facebook page [223]. There you can see in the About section that there's an email address and an Instagram account. He actually won third place in the Wiki Loves Monuments Brazil competition last year [224]. In my humble opinion he should be trusted. I mean, this is not a case of an uploader pretending to be him. I do suppose there is a solution. His only concern is that if it's too late to restore the pictures for this year's competition, then he would prefer to keep them deleted and use them for a subsequent contest. I don't know the deadline. Perhaps if he sends you an email from the Gmail account that he has listed on his Facebook page you could undelete the pictures without a lengthy OTRS process, given the fact that it's a competition, and not something that can wait longer? Thanks in advance for your help and insights. Dontreader (talk) 01:50, 2 August 2016 (UTC)

Dontreader, I am sorry that happen to Ciro Amaro. I trust he is the person who uploaded the images, but we do see about 50 images per day uploaded without licenses or with wrong licenses, etc. So many people are attuned to look suspiciously at awesome images uploaded by a new users, and checking if they were available somewhere else on the web, and for those we do require OTRS. I have access to OTRS and if Ciro Amaro sends from ciroamado@gmail.com a standard email to OTRS saying (in his language of choice) that all images uploaded by User:Ciroamado and http://www.wresh.com.br/clientes/peach-site/author/ciro-amado/?post_type=product are his, I will have them approved and undeleted in a day. Just send me a note that the email was send and it would be easier for me if he can also send the ticket number (16 digit number starting with 201608...) they will send him back in reply email. --Jarekt (talk) 02:30, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
Great! Thanks for your help, Jarekt. I completely understand what you mean. I have nominated tons of images for deletion due to copyright violations and other issues. It's late in Brazil now, I think, but I will leave a message for Ciro with your instructions. I really appreciate your kindness! All the best, Dontreader (talk) 03:01, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks so much, Jarekt, for your amazing help with these pictures! I'm really glad that this story had such a happy ending. It was by sheer chance that I noticed the problem. At first I assumed that the pictures were copyright violations, based on my experience with nominating hundreds of images for deletion, but I'm really glad I was actually able to find Ciro. He was very cooperative. I have had to go through OTRS myself with most of my uploads (it took me a long time to learn the process), so I helped Ciro, but I really appreciate your speed for this case, especially since it's for a competition that means a lot to Ciro, and obviously his contributions to Commons are amazing. I'm very grateful for all the help that you and the other OTRS volunteers and administrators give us here on Commons! Have a great day! Dontreader (talk) 19:30, 2 August 2016 (UTC)

            Competitions best practices

            Hello Jarekt,

Thanks for you help with the deleted files from Ciroamado.

I'm here to discuss with you regarding photo competitions categorization. We are proposing a new contest, the Wiki Loves the Olympics that will be started during the next few days. I created the campaign wlo-rio2016 and the idea is to promote that same contest during the next summer and winter Olympic games.

Can you help me to define the best way to categorize all the files and setup the upload wizard to avoid that problems? We will have links here to each sport, arena, ceremony and delegation(country) of Olympics and Paralimpics games. I will need to define the default categories and object ID for each item. Can you guide me through that process to decrease the negative impact of that contest on Wikimedia Commons?

Best regards Rodrigo Padula (talk) 00:37, 3 August 2016 (UTC)

Rodrigo Padula, First of all In one of my roles I lately begun running monthly Commons:Photo challenge, if you are interested in the future we can quickly set up a page for this kind of event, than all the voting and tallying can be done with standard software we use every month for photo challenge. This year it might be late, but this might be a way to implement it in the future. Campaign:wlo-rio2016 is a good idea. Maybe in documentation for the users we can add guidance on:
            • File naming: maybe advise to name each file "Olimpics 2016-08-XX - DESCRIPTION - NUMBER. jpg" where XX stands for the day, DESCRIPTION would be a name of a person, location and/or event and number would be a 2 or 3 digit number to differentiate different photographs of the same person or event. Files named that way group well together and are easier to categorize afterwards. Number also prevents people for fighting over who will have THE official image of some person. Description part should be short, maybe less than 20-30 characters.
            • Categorization: I would suggest to categories photographs by time, place and people:
            • Geotagging: photographs should be encouraged to have latitude and longitude of camera location added at the upload time or latter by adding {{Location}} template. Latitude and longitude added at the upload time have to be in decimal degrees, so "-23.545531" and "-46.473373" not "23° 32′ 43.91″ S" and "46° 28′ 24.14″ W".
If people follow the naming convention than by day categorization would be easy. We can add each image to Category:2016 Summer Olympics: unsorted photographs by default and encourage people to add by-day, by-place and by-people categories afterwards. If it would be easier you could have a page in Portuguese with translated names of the categories. --Jarekt (talk) 15:17, 3 August 2016 (UTC)
Can you help me to fix that campaign including the default categories ? That is my first project using campaign system/upload wizard. Rodrigo Padula (talk) 16:06, 3 August 2016 (UTC)

I know the name of the author and have his permission to use it. Date is also wrong. Can you help me with this? Thank you in advance. --Bernarda Lusch (talk) 08:15, 7 August 2016 (UTC)

Hopefully Jarekt will forgive me for butting in on his talk page. The easiest way (believe me) is to first email the photographer with this link: Email template for release of rights to a file and ask him/her to cut-and-past the email template within the black border into a word processor. Have s/he fill it in and then cut and past it into an email to >permissions-commons@wikimedia.org< . Emailed in from their 'own' email account adds 'provenance' to the legitimacy of their copyright (which they will still retain) over the said image. If s/he is unwilling, then you have a problem and the image 'will' be shortly deleted -as it is now on my watch list for deletion as a WC copyvio (copyright violation). One can point out to the photographer that it is in their long-term interest to send this email themselves as it brings examples of their works to a wider audience. Changing dates is simple, we can do this for you. First though, we need the authors written permission from himself.--P.g.champion (talk) 00:38, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

P.g.champion, thank you very much for your help. I will try to get this written permission as soon as possible. Artwork template

            Hi Jarek,

As I can see, you was the main implementer of the Instutution: namespace and {{Institution}} template. It's a good idea and absolutely successful IMHO.

There exists an long-standing problem with description of derivative works. They need several levels of entry sets (creation date + author + licence/rights + name+description), which are often confusably mixed or partly missing really. I think, an embedded (nested) "Artwork" page can be an elegant and universal solution for images of sculptures, buildings, and even for scans or photographs of two-dimensional works. We can have an "Artwork" namespace just in the same way as we have "Institution" namespace, and use the pages colapsably or uncolapsably. Or even, more generally, we can have a universal namespace for "subject templates" and to use it for basic entry-table about all individual subjects, i.e. for individual people, vehicles, natural formations etc., and "institution" can be included as one of its special types?

Generally, these template-pages of individual subjects can be real interwiki equivalents of article pages of Wikipedias. To match gallery pages with article pages was a big mistake which origins from prefix absence only, but in actual fact, galleries are more similar to files than to articles. They are collages of its kind - they are not unique in principle, every item can have more various galleries paralelly. A quality gallery should be linked from Wikidata in similar way as the title (infobox)-images are. However, some heavy problems with Wikidata remain frozen. Especially an effective and systematic link between Wikipedia articles and Commons categeories, i.e. between articles, categories and tepmlates of identic item. The original idea that one item can have just one item-page on Wikidata should be revived and hoisted. Hovewer, Wikidata "properties" are not a fully-fledged analogue of real inteproject links. --ŠJů (talk) 16:11, 14 August 2016 (UTC)

I agree that many derivative works like photographs of 3D artworks, often are missing proper author and license info for both original artwork and the photograph. I like using {{Art photo}} for such images. I also think subject namespace would be a good idea. We have Institution and Creator namespaces full of templates. Book templates are in "template" namespace and would be hard to move. There are many pre-filled Artwork templates that reside in Category namespace (like Category:Ghent Altarpiece). They probably should go to Artwork or Subject namespace. However now we are in a middle of major changes to commons Infobox templates, as they all will be rewriten in LUA and be based on Wikidata if wikidata item is provided. I am done with {{Authority control}} template and preparying for rewrite of Creator template. Others started looking at {{Artwork}} template. I would wait with any new namespaces until dust settles after the rewrite of Creator, Institution and Artwork templates. Broken creator templates

Hi Jarekt, I just found out a number of creator templates that were broken by your edits around June 1st. I fixed some of them, but there seem to be many more that you may want to check. Thanks. Nono314 (talk) 21:16, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

Hi Jarek, doubts again about this one. Also, we made the headlines in Poland last week regarding this, which resulted in this upload.

Ku mojemu zaskoczeniu nie mogę go wgrać, gdyż ktoś już go wgrał. Jest tutaj. A tutaj jeszcze ktoś wgrał miniaturkę.

Ja bym przesłał zgodę, imię autora i zdjęcie do OTRS. --Jarekt (talk) 17:45, 26 September 2016 (UTC)

            Your bot claimed...

Your bot claimed: "No required license templates were detected at this file page." I explicitly linked to the official page for the license in question -- the same link used on the source page.

The text of Template:Image license has gone through various iterations. The current wording seems to claim something is required that I have never seen in any image:

            1. URL of the source page
            2. URL to the page of the license linked to on the original source page
            3. An instantiation of a valid commons license template

I am going to repeat, I have never seen an image that has all three of the things this template claims are required.

I put all my image in the public domain, but I believe that practically all of our images that are under a free license are from a very small number of licenses... A handful of CC licenses, GFDL, and a handful of others.

Why doesn't your bot look at the URL in the permission field? If it is the URL to one of the dozen or so licenses used on practically all our images, why doesn't your bot either replace that URL with the appropriate license template, or leave a note on the uploader's talk page telling them what tag maps to that license URL? Geo Swan (talk) 21:29, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

Geo Swan I did not use a bot. I just noticed that your file is missing a license template so I tagged it with {{No license since}} template so it can be fixed. If I have time, I often stop and fix such files but today I was busy so I just tagged it. Template:Image license seems fine and your file seems fine but you are missing "An instantiation of a valid commons license template". --Jarekt (talk) 03:07, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

            Edit requests

Hi Jarek, thank you for your last fulfilling my request. In the meantime 7 minor improvements occured, so I need again an admin to

            1. copy the content of {{Image generation/sandbox}} into {{Image generation}}. BTW, I needed an expansion of the following template with the parameter for "sandbox"; please
            2. copy the content of {{Heavily used template/sandbox}} into {{Heavily used template}},
            3. and the content of {{Heavily used template/sandbox/en}} into {{Heavily used template/en}}.

Thank you sarang사랑 11:17, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

sarang, you are proposing to add up to 5 parameters to {{Heavily used template}} that at the moment takes none. What problem are you trying to solve? I see you are trying to:
            1. add 2 style parameters to Template:Heavily used template/layout,
            2. allow alternative name for the namespace name
            3. add "or use the sandbox" if appropriate
I do not understand the need for change 1 and 2. Change 3 I think is a good idea but I would do it based on if sandbox page exist or not. Also in the past that message was usually delivered by {{Use sandbox}} template, which I added to {{Image generation}} for time being. I did {{Image generation/sandbox}} changes, but moved {{Heavily used template}} + other stuff to /doc so you and others have easier access to it. --Jarekt (talk) 12:41, 19 September 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for your edits. The styles would offer a possibility to change the box which is currently centered and 80%; when it seems better to display it e.g. besides of a TOC it can be styled that way.
The namespace is most times either template, or in a few cases module. With more flexibility (if used!) adjustment will be possible.
You saw that I positioned the "heavily" preceding the /doc, but I won't mind that it is now part of it. It is rather an advantage to have it in the /doc from which I am not locked out (currently...); and of course it does not matter either that the "sandbox" is shown by another template. sarang사랑 14:05, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

File: Map of Silk Roads over the Roof of Asia.jpg

Hi Jarekt, I am unsure if this file has copyright clearance. The publisher allows for use of a single work, as per their website, which states: “Cambridge University Press grants permission freely for the reproduction in another work of a short prose extract (less than 400 words), a single figure or a single table in which it holds rights (see the important caveat in the Notes below). In such cases a request for permission need not be submitted, but the reproduced material must be accompanied by a full citation of the original source.”

The City Of Auckland Pipe Band

            Hi,

I have just seen your message on my talkpage about this file. It's the first time that I have to depend on an OTRS permission, so I'm not sure about what should be done :

            • I shot the video last summer with the permission of the group/pipe-major (the tune, Amazing Grace is old enough to be PD-OLD). I knew that I would also have to get a written permission, so I put the OTRS template.
            • I have sent a mail to the pipe-major 2 days ago to ask him to send a mail to the OTRS team.

Did I do something wrong, or is it normal to have this kind of template when using an OTRS procedure ?

Have a nice day. --XIIIfromTOKYO (talk) 12:36, 5 October 2016 (UTC)

XIIIfromTOKYO, this message is not about OTRS, but about lack of copyright templates. All files are required to have copyright template at the upload time, and some of them might need additional paper work sent to OTRS. Your OTRS should include the type of license you are using. --Jarekt (talk) 12:41, 5 October 2016 (UTC)

dokumenty z Józef Piłsudski Institute of America

            Property lookup in lua modules

Hi! We spoke briefly at the WikiConference, and I said that I thought that there might be a way to do lookup by property lookup within Lua templates. I have reviewed the documentation for mw.wikibase, and have to conclude that I was wrong. Another solution you might consider is that we could write a bot that keeps WikiCommons pages in sync with Wikidata properties. Bovlb (talk) 23:40, 10 October 2016 (UTC)

You'd need two bots: one on Commons to copy property values from Wikidata into Commons templates; and one on Wikidata to transfer Commons templates into property values. You needs to think about special behaviour like duplicate values, and how to handle deletion and modification. Bovlb (talk) 14:00, 11 October 2016 (UTC)
Bovlb, we will need a lot of bots with automatic daily runs:
There is probably several other bot services one would need but I can not think of them yet or the Commons templates are not ready. I am no expert at running bots on tool labs. Bovlb if you are and are interested in above tasks we can work together on setting them up. Otherwise we migh want to move this discussion to bot request pages on Commons and Wikidata. --Jarekt (talk) 19:00, 11 October 2016 (UTC)

            Authority control and WorldCat

            Hi Jarekt,

Authority control of Commons include WorldCat. The info to WorldCat comes from LCCN but not always it's ok. see Category:Shevach Eden. The LCCN n88174731 say's Shevach Eden and WorldCat n88174731 say's Edén, Staffan which is another person (viaf). Any solution? -- Geagea (talk) 21:55, 20 October 2016 (UTC)

Geagea, I found a solution by using local Worldcatid parameter, however I do not know if there is a way to do it with wikidata only parameters. --Jarekt (talk) 02:49, 21 October 2016 (UTC)
Yes, that's a solution. What about the case when there is no WorldCat number? -- Geagea (talk) 11:09, 21 October 2016 (UTC)
I do not know. That is a first case I know where WorldCat link is wrong. I could set Worldcatid to some value like 'ignore' to just skip showing it. --Jarekt (talk) 12:25, 21 October 2016 (UTC)

            Dzięki! --Nrpl12a

I just noticed that you removed and deleted my custom license template; could you explain why you did that? AFAIK such templates are discouraged, yet by no means prohibited (no case of OSE). If the lack of metadata was the reason, you could have taken the time to add it, though given the fact that the license template was always accompanied by a default one I highly doubt there would have been any urgency to do so.    FDMS  4    11:03, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

User:FDMS4 your "custom license template" was just calling {{int:wm-license-cc-by-4.0-text}} to display "This file is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license." and link to https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/deed.en . You just wrote alternative version of {{Cc-by-4.0}} template and placed it in your user namespace. User custom license tags are a bad idea since they can be changed easily, swapping or removing image licenses and without leaving any mark in file history. Following best practices and COM:OWN I was adding text of the some of the user custom license tags directly to the files, especially for no longer active users who no longer watch pages in their user pages (and who are not likely to come back to quarrel about it ;) ). User:丶 was not active and I did not noticed that it was an alternative account of an active user. --Jarekt (talk) 12:45, 1 November 2016 (UTC)
I know; its purpose was to avoid confusing users about the different licenses and instead clarify at least a bit that the CC BY 3.0 is just an additional (legacy) license. I also knew about the downsides of doing so when creating the template, most of them can be overcome by fully protecting it. I get that the connection between 丶 and me isn't obvious looking at only the source code and can assure you that I'm by no means mad at you; still, could you please restore and reinstate the template?    FDMS  4    16:40, 3 November 2016 (UTC)
I restored User:丶/CC BY. However I do not like the idea of reinstating it. File:B 98 Millstatt am See 2013-06.jpg is licensed under CC-by-3.0 and CC-by-4.0, and removing one of those license templates (and replacing with unofficial template) might be considered to be equivalent to revoking the license. May be a better way would be to extend your license to also other CC-by licenses and use Template:Cc-by-all? --Jarekt (talk) 17:06, 3 November 2016 (UTC)
Thanks; could you point me to where it is stated that {{CC-Layout}} may only be used in the default templates? Solely changing the explanatory text can definitely not be seen as a license revocation (those explanatory texts are works by the Commons community and there have been several efforts to overhaul them); even if it could, using {{Cc-by-all}} wouldn't be any different.    FDMS  4    11:24, 5 November 2016 (UTC)

            William Kurelek

Hello Jarek, You've helped me in the past with images, with the Achille Delaere article. Hullaballoo Wolfowitz has gone into the William Kurelek article and deleted all the images that I was using to illustrate the artist's phases in his development as an artist over the course of his life. Can you help me to reinstate these images in the article? I would be grateful for any support that you could give me with this. Thank you. Nicola Mitchell (talk) 21:56, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

I have added more critical commentary to: Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8), in each of the paintings that were deleted. My additions come after the semi-colon. The editor did not delete the painting Zaporozhian Cossacks, so I did not add anything to that. And The Maze which he deleted, did not originate with me, but it would be great to recover it for use in the article, as it marks a pivotal period in Kurelek's artistic development. Hope you can help. Nicola Mitchell (talk) 15:05, 14 November 2016 (UTC)
Nicola I am sorry but in this case I kind of agree with User:Hullaballoo Wolfowitz. Use of "fair use" images should be kept to a bare minimum and 11 paintings is not bare minimum. One photo and one painting seems like a right compromise. Please see en:Wikipedia:Non-free content for more info. English Wikipedia is unusual as it allows any use of any non-free content, and it is best not to abuse it. For example Polish Wikipedia does not allow it so many Polish music albums will have an album cover on English wiki and text on Polish. If you find any images that are in public domain or if someone contacts family or whoever is the copyright holder to his works and they release the images under acceptable license (by writing to COM:OTRS, than the images could stay in the article. Sorry for not supporting you on this one and please contact me if I might be able to help you in the future. --Jarekt (talk) 03:28, 15 November 2016 (UTC)
Okay, I'll rework the article for the one image then. Thanks for looking at it. Nicola Mitchell (talk) 12:00, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Talking about Structured Data on Commons

            Hello Jarekt,

to improve functionality for searching, organizing and maintaining media on Commons, the Wikidata team wants to enable use of structured data on Commons. For this, we would like to learn from community members like you how you do these tasks on Commons.

If you would like to participate and support us, please let me know (here on the talk page or via mail to jan.dittrich AT wikimedia.de) and we will set up a date together to talk for about 30-45min. I often use google Hangouts for this, however, I am open for any other possibility (e.g. Skype, WebRTC…)

Kind Regards, --Jan Dittrich (WMDE) (talk) 15:17, 16 November 2016 (UTC)

Jan, I will be happy to help and Structured Data might be a solution to many of our issues. I am not sure if I ever used Google Hangouts, Skype, WebRTC, etc. , so there might be some learning curve there. Like on Wikidata, a lot of tasks are done with tools. For example for edits I would use Cat-a-Lot, VisualFileEdit, HotCats, AutoWikiBrowser, etc. For searches I use default search, CatScan2 and Quarry. It would be good if your team was familiar with those tools. --Jarekt (talk) 15:36, 16 November 2016 (UTC)
            This is great to hear!
            - For the way of communication, I suggest using https://meet.jit.si/ . I saw it works without any installation if you have a sort-of-current browser; we would just need to share an URL to the talk.
            - Thanks for listing some of the tools you use on commons. Some I know already, in others I will have a look.
            - It's probably the easiest if you write me a mail with your preferred times and I'll find us a date and time (write me a mail to jan.dittrich AT wikimedia.de). I can also send you a suggestion for a date and time via wiki Mail.

Generosity Crowdfunding Campaign for User:The Photographer

Please excuse me spamming you, which concerns Commons User:The Photographer, who has 86 Featured Pictures. His contributions cover the architecture and culture of Brazil and Venezuela. He has basic photographic equipment: an old D300 camera and 35mm lens, and lives in a poor country where photographic equipment is expensive. The Photographer has recently taken several images using the technique where multiple frames are stitched together to create a high-resolution panorama. However, many times frustrated with the stitching errors that result from trying to take such photos without a proper panoramic head for his tripod. This special equipment permits the camera to be rotated around the entrance pupil of the lens, and eliminates such errors. Having a panoramic head would greatly increase the potential for The Photographer to create sharp high-resolution images for Commons. In addition, the purchase of a fisheye lens would enable 180 × 360° panoramas to be taken, which are a great way to explore a scene as though one is really there.

Please see the discussion about the Crowd-funding campaign on User talk:The Photographer#Generosity Crowdfunding Campaign and visit the Generosity Crowd-funding Campaign page to consider donating. Even a modest donation will make a difference if many people contribute. Thanks. -- Colin (talk) 21:22, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

            Use template object location

Hi Jarekt, would it make sense to replace the inline coordinates in these categories[334] by {{Object location}}? --Arnd (talk) 08:49, 19 December 2016 (UTC)

Thanks, only a few remaining. For them there are two generally different structures: like Category:Ajanta Caves and like Category:Alte Universität Marburg. Maybe you could fix them. The rest i will do manually. --Arnd (talk) 08:22, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
there is still about 1300 {{Inline coordinates}} in category namespace. I was looking at trying to figure out rules for the ones that can be converted to {{Object location}}s. I come up with a rule run the code and than check what is left. I will look at the 2 structures you mentioned. --Jarekt (talk) 12:50, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
Hi Jarekt, i just finished the remaining files. However, i think several of the inline coordinates still make sense and should not be replaced. While doing these edits i found several cats that have {{On Wikidata}} but do not use this as a parameter in {{Object location}} as for example Category:Chiesa di San Pancrazio a Isola Farnese (Rome). Do you think it would make sense to add this information? --Arnd (talk) 07:02, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
I agree that {{Inline coordinates}} make sense if they are used inline with the text. I have seen a few of those but they are rare. I am not going to do a blank replace of {{Inline coordinates}} with {{Object location}}, and more nuanced approach takes a lot of manual labor. About 7 years ago I cleaned up the use of all rare and unusual geo templates, but I do not feel like doing it again. About {{On Wikidata}} and {{Object location}}, I was thinking for a while about a rewrite of {{On Wikidata}} (or creation of new template) that does full category description based on wikidata, with a single q-code, so for people it would call {{Authority control}} and maybe {{Creator}} (once I finish rewriting it). For places it would call {{Object location}} and maybe {{Authority control}} or something else. For bio organisms it would call some Taxonomy template, etc. As a result I do not do much with smaller fixes as they are likely temporary. --Jarekt (talk) 13:16, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

Thank you. --Arnd (talk) 21:26, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

            Waiting for the bot?

Hi Jarek, you created {{Creator possible}}. Category:Creator templates to be created by a bot seems to be quite full and some of the edits are quite old. Any idea when this mystery bot comes along? ;-) Multichill (talk) 20:03, 22 December 2016 (UTC)

Multichill, When I created this template it was just a tag encouraging people to create creator template, without any mention of bots or wikidata. I did not ended up using it much and it was semi abandoned. Few years latter User:BMacZero repurposed it to take wikidata parameter. I do not know of any plans to run bots on files using it. I did not even noticed when it changed. I was not working on {{Creator}} rewrite for a while but in the future Creator templates might only need 2 parameters: Wikidata and sortkey. The rest would be come from Wikidata. Before creating whole bunch of new templates I would wait for the format to stabilize. --Jarekt (talk) 20:19, 22 December 2016 (UTC)
That sure sounds like a sensible approach. Why do you need a sortkey? On Wikidata we have properties for the family name and the given name so you could easily construct it based on that. Multichill (talk) 20:23, 22 December 2016 (UTC)
Sortkey is used for sorting within Category:Creator template home categories and Category:Creator templates and original template does not work well without them, but in a way I do not think it matters if those pages are well sorted or not. I suspect many items do not have family name and given name properties, but I should try to use them. So eventually creator templates might become just {{Creator|Wikidata=Q...}}. At that point there might not be a need for separate creator page and infoboxes like {{Artwork}} will just take a Q-code for an author. --Jarekt (talk) 20:47, 22 December 2016 (UTC)
@Jarekt: @Multichill: I made those changed to {{Creator possible}} in anticipation of running this bot task: Commons:Bots/Requests/BMacZeroBot 3. But as Jarekt pointed out, the format for Creator is changing a lot right now, so I didn't actually run the bot. I never changed the template back because I figured the Wikidata code would still be useful once the format was figured out. I can change some of the text in the template to make it clearer what is going on. BMacZero (talk) 20:26, 28 December 2016 (UTC)

I am limited in my knowedge of computer use, so when I request photos I ask in advance for use of a photo, I ask photographers to remove watermarks since we can not use them with watermarks in the biography articles. It would be great if you could remove yours from your picture of Dewey Redman and Geri Allen - [File:Trio 3 + Geri Allen featuring Andrew Cyrille, Reggie Workman and Oliver Lake.jpg] I don't really use commons except to upload photos or categorize some. Leahtwosaints, as you can see I am not the author of that photo, just the guy who transferred it from Flickr. It is easy, so I removed two watermarks for you, but in general if this or that project has issues with watermarks it is usually their job to remove them or not use the image. Here On Commons we greatly prefer images without watermarks, but there is no man power to remove them all. --Jarekt (talk) 20:16, 28 December 2016 (UTC)
