Video Uploading Issue (Wiki Science Competition 2017)

Dear Mr. Guanaco, I'm trying to upload my video for the Wiki Science Competition 2017 (for the multimedia category) but the upload keeps on failing. The video file is an .ogg and I have tried also with a .webm. At the end of the upload this error appears: "This action has been automatically identified as harmful and has been disabled. You may press "Save page" again if you believe your edit to be constructive. In case you aren't sure if your edit is constructive, it's best to ask for help, either on the [[::Badtitle/ApiErrorFormatter::getDummyTitle|talk page]] or on the help desk. In case you were actually making an acceptable contribution, please report this error here. Thank you" I have clicked on "Upload anyway" but it has failed again. Unfortunately the submission has to be done by the 15th of December. Mr. Jeff G. answered on the Help Desk: "Sorry, such video uploads are not allowed via WP0 (Wikipedia Zero) due to abuse by people pirating copyrighted content in them. Can you try via a metered service or wait four days until your account is Autoconfirmed? — Jeff G. ツ 00:57, 13 December 2017 (UTC)" What is a "metered service"? Can we fix this issue? thank you in advance.

Regards,

✓ Done Account marked confirmed, so video uploads are enabled. Guanaco (talk) 15:50, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

Also User:Riccardo.fissore has the same problem, can you mark him as confirmed, he has no group flag yet. I can leave a public request if you prefer, I want to show him I am "fixing" it.--Alexmar983 (talk) 13:50, 14 December 2017 (UTC)

Do you know how to mark these images?

Someone resubmitted these images for review and I think only an Admin like you or Jcb should mark them. There is a special way to mark them where the copyright owner doesn't know how to change the license but says on the source they are CC BY SA 4.0. See this edit

Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 23:16, 14 December 2017 (UTC)

Not needed, the original review shortly after upload is sufficient. Later changes of the license at source have no effect to our copy of the image. The review template is our evidence that the NC restriction wasn't there at source when the file was uploaded here. Jcb (talk) 23:39, 14 December 2017 (UTC)

Would you pass or fail this video clip? It is not a standard video clip but just a video of screenshots (possible derivative images?) Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 06:41, 15 December 2017 (UTC)

Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 06:46, 15 December 2017 (UTC)

These are some tough ones. I had to do some digging. I found angalgalan.es which shows they're the creators of Pares y Nines. The site links to their YouTube account so it seems legitimate. The second one is similar. I verified that it was the official RDC YouTube account, and I noticed the backdrop showed their logo. It's reasonable to assume it was their photoshoot and their image. Mass reversion of categorization and nuking of DRs

Hello Guanaco, hope you are well. I stumbled upon this file and a few others with leftover templates. I noticed that the DR pages were nuked and also with the mass reversion of seemingly valid categorization. I'm not sure this is the best approach to take, especially with DRs. I can see the categorization being possibly problematic as there are fewer eyes on that than DR, but I think review is a better approach than mass-reversion. Regarding DRs, I don't think they should be deleted unless obviously invalid, ie. vandalism tagging featured images as "spam" or something of the sort.

I think the mass reversion seems to cause more problems than it solves, especially with the multiple incomplete deletion request errors that have resulted from the nuking of the DRs. For future cases, I think community consensus ought to be determined on whether we should continue nuking/mass reverting or just stick to reverting obvious disruption. What are your thoughts? Thank you. Jon Kolbert (talk) 03:55, 15 December 2017 (UTC)

I made a bit of a mess in my haste. Sorry about that. I think his standard categorization is generally fine so we can leave those alone. It's the "unused personal files" DRs and categories which have been problematic, as he has targeted a lot of files which are fine. I think we should continue to revert those.
DRs created in the last 24 hours, I think it's safe to delete/revert outright. If they've been around longer, the overlapping edits and other issues become more likely, so I'll leave them or do a standard close. In general I want editing to be a discouraging experience for this banned user, without spending too much time or creating collateral damage. I also want to avoid another big community discussion about him. So I'll be much more thorough and cautious. Guanaco (talk) 04:15, 15 December 2017 (UTC)
No worries. While I can see why one would want to discourage edits, I think the result of reverting non-disruptive edits will be 100% disruption. It's far from an ideal situation, but I'd much rather have plausible DRs/categorization than admins spending a larger chunk of their day cleaning up vandalism. Jon Kolbert (talk) 14:49, 15 December 2017 (UTC)
  • Hello, I'd like to point this policy as we don't have a similar one in Commons " (...) This does not mean that edits must be reverted just because they were made by a banned editor...). IMO such mass reverts are not necessary nor helpful for our project. As well as it is not necessary to delete the DRs page of obvious out of scope files such as this one. You say above "he has targeted a lot of files which are fine", what are those files? I ask you the question because if I see such disruptive edits, I will likely change my mind. Kaizenify

Hi Guanaco,

I hope you are doing fine. Since you initially blocked User:Kaizenify as a sock of User:Oluwa2Chainz, I want to let you know that I made this edit to User:Kaizenify per checkuser (Krd) evidence here. Feel free to revert my edit without a notice if you think my edit was not constructive. Thank you. Wikicology (talk) 07:37, 15 December 2017 (UTC)

No problem. Guanaco (talk) 23:47, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

June 2011 Uploads by this User

In 2011, this user (User:Ak ccm) did not ask for licensereviews on his images from MushroomObserver. Maybe 2012, I don't know. From 2012 someone seems to have been marking his images. (the unmarked images all seem to date to the year of upload--all in 2011 it appears.) Can this be rectified? Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 23:36, 17 December 2017 (UTC)

  • PS: I cannot tell if the source for the July 2011 uploaded image by this user below was deleted. It was never marked. I think I see a thumbnail of this image..so I don't know if it can be passed.
  • File:2011-07-13 Hygrocybe nitida 71501.jpg

All I know is this uploader's 2011 Mushroom Observer images should be checked for a licensereview. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 00:59, 18 December 2017 (UTC)

Sorry, I've been busy and mostly away. I'll reply at AN. Guanaco (talk) 23:27, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

Hello Guanaco, I was patrolling when I saw user Stan old remove the possible sock template from his page. After I restored it the user left this diff on my talk page [[1]] saying that you looked into the situation and found him not to be abusing accounts. I would like to know simply if this is true. Thank you, -- Sixflashphoto (talk) 17:29, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

@Sixflashphoto: He did abuse a sockpuppet, but that's no longer a concern. As he's unblocked and unlikely to still be socking, he can have control of his user page. Guanaco (talk) 21:54, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

Duck

Hello The duck is positive since the iP and the account have made the same contribution. But since the contributor has potentially bypassed his block with his account, what would be the solution to know and punish him ? --Panam2014 (talk) 00:40, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

@Panam2014: Well, he committed block evasion on English Wikipedia, but not here, as he was never blocked on Commons. I've warned him that uploading a raster over an SVG is unacceptable. If the disruption continues, I intend to block both the account and IP. Guanaco (talk) 00:45, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) @Panam2014: Since the block is on enwp, the venue for redress would probably be WP:ANI.   — Jeff G. ツ 00:48, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
But since you have contacts with "en.wiki" could you tell their administrators that this is the same person and so he has bypassed his blocking on Wikipedia. Also, he did not behave honestly on the talk page alternating with the two identities, would it be possible to warn him for that? Finally, one of the declared iP's of CC22 is similar to the figure. --Panam2014 (talk) 00:48, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
I don't think his intent was to deceive us here, but to simply evade his Wikipedia block. He logged out of his account at Wikipedia, which had the effect of logging out here as well. Guanaco (talk) 01:03, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
Ok, but would it be possible to remind him here to tell him not to juggle identities?--Panam2014 (talk) 01:16, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

Dear Admin Guanaco,

If you wish to mark this image, the second and third uploaded images have to be deleted...since they don't match the source image which is the first and oldest image. You can do this as an Admin. There are a lot of image to mark and I mark what I can. Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 01:56, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

@Leoboudv: I found the images at ID 67735 and 67736 so I did a history split. Guanaco (talk) 02:28, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
And it turns out the old overwritten version was a duplicate of another image. I deleted and redirected it. Guanaco (talk) 02:30, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

User:Sasata & License review tag once again

It appears that User Sasata also uploaded images from Mushroom Observer in 2010 and 2011 from 2009 TO 2013 without a license review. Can you ask a bot to check please? I marked some of his uploads with no license review....but he has too many images. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 02:06, 22 December 2017 (UTC)

  • Many of these images uploaded in 2010 by Sasata from Mushroom Observer (MO) were NEVER marked and it continues into 2013 at least. Personally, I have to do other things to other than review all these images. But please ask a bot to check and add a license review template to his unreviewed images. I suspect it could be 300+ images or 700+ images. Yikes! I found out about Sasata's uploads since you filed DR's against two of User:Ak ccm's images that Sasata also uploaded from but never ordered a review...from the same Mushroom Oberver account that was deleted. So, I filed a DR on Sasata's images from this account and did a check on Sasata's images. The worst thing is since Sasata's MO images are so early from 2009-2013, they would be the mosty heavily used on wikipedia. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 02:19, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
  • Common Good later marked some of Sasata's images in 2012 but many many other Sasata uploads from Mushroom Observer were missed, I notice. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 02:25, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
  • If you can mark some of Sasata's images, it will help. I will take a short break from wikipedia after dealing with this second situation. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 02:46, 22 December 2017 (UTC)

I have no idea how many other MO images by Sasata from 2009 to 2013 were never marked. I can only check so many without help from a bot. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 03:06, 22 December 2017 (UTC)

@Leoboudv: I ran VisualFileChange and tagged 647 images with {{LicenseReview}}. This only took a couple minutes. The fun part will be to review them all. Have a good Christmas, and don't worry about them too much. We'll get to them when we get to them! Guanaco (talk) 05:37, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
  • Thanks for telling me the number. It was a high one as I feared. I won't rush to mark them and will take a well deserved wiki-break after this task. Please feel free to mark some images if you can. Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 05:39, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
  • For some of Sasata's image's, I filed a DR since I could not find a source while for others, the reason was because there was a NC license with no other evidence of a free license. Maybe in the first case, you can find the image. If you have time, please mark some (maybe 25-40) of his images if you can. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 01:31, 23 December 2017 (UTC)

Re::

Hello Mr. Guanaco, I am writing to you because I noticed that some recently created files have put them to be blamed to be eliminated, I am confident that the following files are in adequate condition with regard to the copyright to them inserted, if perhaps he noticed the re-restored files are the same as that blocked user, where she had assured me some help about it, and instead no one, and I say nobody moved to help this issue of the following files. the arrignrazie only because she had only heard one of my following request regarding a file that she defined in compliance with the PD licenses of commons, and for this I thank you --87.14.89.123 22:12, 23 December 2017 (UTC)

Some bubble tea for you!

Sasata's images

I notice that Sasata uploaded at least 3 Featured Images and no one marked them like this one below.

Luckily the source from 2009 is still intact and not deleted. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 03:14, 24 December 2017 (UTC)

  • As for the image below, could you type a pass in Raeky's name since Raeky was named a trusted reviewer in 2008. I typed in the circumstances below...but not a pass....and removed it from Mushroom Observer review needed category. Before 2012, trusted user's images can be kept but maybe a pass is necessary? The source account owner (Noah Siegel) deleted almost all his images that were on Commons...before they could be reviewed.
  • File:Omphalotus olearius 33856.jpg

All the remaining images in this category cannot be saved since Noah Siegel deleted his images with no prior review. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 03:18, 24 December 2017 (UTC)

I saved a couple more which were uploaded by Raeky. The others I set up replacements at COM:CDC. Guanaco (talk) 11:24, 24 December 2017 (UTC)

Boo hoo.. Maybe make the website user friendly and you wont become butt hurt over such comments. i spent HOURS building my stupid whatever it is page Wiki whatever. And you guys ERASED IT saying some Copyright BS. how can i break copyrights OF MYSELF...

Dear Guanaco,

Could you please mark thes 2 images? The only other image in this category is under DR and I found 2 free ones. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 23:06, 25 December 2017 (UTC)

✓ Done. I also ordered a global replace. Guanaco (talk) 01:39, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
✓ Done. Guanaco (talk) 10:37, 26 December 2017 (UTC)

I was just wondering...perhaps all uses of the above image under DR could be replaced with this image that I passed below:

Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 23:01, 27 December 2017 (UTC)

2 Final DR & DR

Dear Guanaco,

This is my final request. I have no more. In the first DR, I uploaded a free replacement image since there was no other images in this species category. In the second DR, a Quality Assessed image (not uploaded by me) can replace the image now in use which is under DR and cannot be kept.

All the other Sasata images cannot be saved and I checked on Mushroom Observer and flickr...although I suggested a few replacement images in the surviving DR's on Sasata's talkpage that were not uploaded by me. Hopefully this 2 replacement image can replace all use of the 2 images under DR here. Have a Happy New Year. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 21:56, 28 December 2017 (UTC)

Finally, this image below is a puzzle as the author (Alan Rockefeller) deleted the image at the original 2009 source only to upload it at another source and it was still CC BY SA 3.0 between 2013 and 2014...if you see its DR. Can it be passed at the new source...which I typed in? If it can, the image file number needs a minor rename to 313174.

Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 02:56, 29 December 2017 (UTC)

All ✓ Done. Images are replaced and deleted. I passed the Psilocybe mexicana based on the "Wikipedia compatible" license at the source, linked to CC BY-SA 3.0. Guanaco (talk) 10:52, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
  • Thank You for all your volunteer work. The third DR image was a puzzler and I am happy that it could still be saved. May you have a Happy 2018. Regards from Canada, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:25, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
  • As an aside Guanaco, I was looking at this DR also by Sasata and I uploaded a replacement image to replace the image under DR--which is heavily used. It only needs to be marked first. I did the same in this DR and it is miracle this image exists from the same copyright owner but with a free license. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 21:46, 29 December 2017 (UTC)

Happy New Year, Guanaco!

Hi. You mentioned this image is "multi-licensed" with both CC-BY-NC-SA and CC-BY-SA, but I supposed that these two licenses should be in conflict with each other, and thus the license is not clearly tagged. Plus, the copyright claims on its original page is confusing as well. I don't think that should be acceptable. --TechyanTalk15:26, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

Multi-licensing is very common, as here on Commons or Wikipedia. "By saving changes, you agree to the Terms of Use, and you irrevocably agree to release your contribution under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license and the GFDL." The text I'm writing now could be used under either license. This case appears to be similar. Apparently, the image was originally BY-NC-SA, but the photographer added the "Wikipedia compatible" BY-SA option for our use. Guanaco (talk) 15:36, 5 January 2018 (UTC)

avoid offensive contents

you told me to avoid some categories that I may find offensive. but how can I do it i blocked the english wikpedia to avoid porn. but I found that pornographic film exist on the arabic wikipedia either, Im seriously not okay with THIS!! If there any way to get rid of porn and use my arabic wikpedia freely tell me. and by the way i still believe that the debie porn film is illegal, I think I saw under 18 years old girl act as porn star so as extreme beheading or torture medias must be deleted immediately , the same is for this content. just deleted on the arabic wikipedia i don't care if it's educational for you, because this content shouldn't be viewed here.

I'm sorry, I don't know how to help you. Each language of Wikipedia can set its own policies, but here and we only censor content if it's illegal in the United States, if it grossly violates personal privacy, or if it has absolutely no educational value. Regarding the porn video, it is a well-known film from I believe the 1970s. If there were underage performers, we could remove it if there is evidence of that claim. Some actors look younger than they are, a fact which is often exploited by the porn industry.
Even something like a beheading video could be in scope, as there is a need to educate about Islamic State and other barbaric organizations. If there are concerns, we would need to discuss them in a DR rather than immediately deleting. That way the community can discuss any possible value. However, if the content is itself illegal to reproduce or possess in the US, you should notify the oversight team. In general, on Wikipedia you're likely to see sexual content on articles about sex and related topics, and violent content on articles about violence and violent organizations. Guanaco (talk) 07:07, 6 January 2018 (UTC)

This DR can be saved

Dear Guanaco,

Please please keep this heavily used image in this DR above. Sasata, the uploader, made another stupid mistake. I describe what I had to do to locate this free image in the DR. Look through thousands of image uploads by D. Molter--who I know Never 1. deleted his images or 2. changed his image license. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 03:24, 6 January 2018 (UTC)

Ordering License Review on Natr 's images

Natr uploaded several Mushroom Observer images like this: File:Clitopilus prunulus, Strouds Run State Park 5.jpg without a license review. Can you order a bot to add license reviews to hsi images from Mushroom Observer? Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 11:13, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

@Leoboudv: ✓ Done I tagged them and then reviewed them myself. Guanaco (talk) 11:38, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

Regarding your question

I saw your message on the User Problems notice board, so I thought I'd answer your question directly. I'm not a sock puppet. I seriously question the value of the files I've nominated for deletion, and I'm asking you in good faith to take a close look at the images and decide how useful they are to the project. AshFriday (talk) 04:24, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

I'm not a checkuser or a psychic, but certain things are consistent. I'm not jumping to any conclusions, but it's rare for someone to come out of nowhere with specific intentions such as "cleaning up smut". I do agree we have too many low-quality nudes, but there's also plenty of explicit content which must not be censored. Guanaco (talk) 04:41, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

I agree. By all means, allow the community decide what's worth keeping and what isn't. As I understand it, that is the best way to approach this matter, and I will gladly stand by whatever consensus is reached. AshFriday (talk) 05:00, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

RE:Files by Tbolttrain

According to the page history for each file, User:Tbolttrain has reverted/removed the deletion request notices before the DR has been closed. Is that normal procedure on Commons? AshFriday (talk) 10:36, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

@AshFriday and Tbolttrain: No, the DRs should be left open with notices intact, until the DR is closed. Some of these images do need to go in my opinion; there may be room for debate in all these cases. If you want them kept, you should comment on the DRs and say  Keep. Structured Commons - Design feedback request: Multilingual Captions

Hello! You are receiving this message because you signed up for the the community focus group for Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons.

The Structured Data on Commons team has a new design feedback request up for Multilingual Captions support in the Upload Wizard. Visit the page for more information about the potential designs. Discussion and feedback is welcome there.

On a personal note, you'll see me posting many of these communications going forward for the Structured Data project, as SandraF transitions into working on the GLAM side of things for Structured Data on Commons full time. For the past six months she's been splitting time between the two roles (GLAM and Community Liaison). I'm looking forward to working with you all again. Thank you, happy editing. Thank you for your assessment - Similar cases

Guanaco I'd like to thank you for your comment and your opinion. An administrator's opinion is also needed here: Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Fenerbahçe Museum, Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Fenerbahçe SK, Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Galatasaray Museum. I'd be grateful if you gave your assessment and your opinion there as well, because it is too difficult for me to explain everything from scratch. This happened a month ago but I'm just noticing it now. David Adam Kess has socked once again, awarding himself barnstars. Also, I notice he's only temporarily blocked. Enwiki indeffed David Adam Kess a while ago. You people are far too forgiving here at Commons. Sro23 (talk) 20:58, 30 January 2018 (UTC)

Blocks should be preventative and not punitive, this is something that the Commons:Blocking policy states, and if David Adam Kess returns to be a productive editor then this would be a benefit for everyone. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 19:06, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
He returned and big surprise, resumed harassing other users and was awarded yet another temporary block. You people don't need to tolerate DAK's bullshit, but for some reason you do. Sro23 (talk) 03:14, 20 February 2018 (UTC)

My uploads from Mushroom Observer

Dear Admin Guanaco,

Can you tag my uploads from Mushroom Observer with Category:Images from Mushroom Observer. I forgot that category. I uploaded about 168-170 images in total from December 25, 2017. If you can't, that's OK. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 23:38, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

  • Never mind. It appears to be a hidden category that appears whenever an image is uploaded from Mushroom Observer...I just saw this subcat for my mushroom images. Intriguing, --Leoboudv (talk) 06:26, 4 February 2018 (UTC)

Hi Guanaco. Fyi, this user has resumed uploading tons of unsuitable images. See Special:ListFiles/Stan_old (NSFW!). I'm informing you because this issue has been raised at Commons:Forum (i.e. the German language Village Pump). I have also pinged Hedwig in Washington over there. UPE Tidy up

Hi Guanaco. I blocked Plot Spoiler on en.wiki a couple of weeks ago. Many of their uploads here are flickrwashed or clearly not their own work as claimed. There are a few exceptions, but most of them need deleting. Cheers Smartse (talk) 14:54, 12 March 2018 (UTC)

This media may be deleted.
Thanks for uploading File:Tim Gemmill selfie.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you.

Images with unidentified locations

Hello, I have a lot of images from different European countries, but the problem is I don't remember the exact location of most of them. Should I still upload these? If yes, in what categories should I put them?

Thanks in advance.

new images

Good day @Guanaco! May I ask you a question? Did you remember an ticket numbe you sent to Random Republika last year? If so, kindly check the images I'd been uploaded from the above-mentioned webaitw yesterday. You may also check the same consent from Rain de Ocampo, too! Thank you! RenRen070193 (talk) 00:01, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

@RenRen070193: Hi, sorry I've not been around to respond. The ticket number was 2017101610000099. It only covers content shown in a specific article, and I'm not immediately seeing anything that applies. If we receive a new permission which applies to those images, we can undelete them. Sockpuppets of Playtime is over

Hello.
Revision of Category:Sockpuppets_of_Playtime_is_over it might be true that most of alleged socks belong to the well-known troll, but not all of them. Look at Mrez9802 (talk · contribs · count · global contribs). It is perfectly possible for one sock to block another sock of the same master, but WMFOffice would not lock it globally in May 2015 as a globally banned user in this case.

What is known about Playtime is over (talk · contribs · count · global contribs) at all? How and by whom were his/her alleged socks detected? Incnis Mrsi (talk) 08:52, 30 March 2018 (UTC)

@Incnis Mrsi: Mrez9802 was probably Russavia, but I could be wrong. In general, I saw a strong behavioral match between INC socks from a few months ago and the playtime ones. If I recall, Playtime used many open proxies as well, and the CheckUser data would have been inconclusive. Obsession with Russavia was one of the behaviors they exhibited in common. Also, some recent INC socks had very similar usernames to Playtime ("zzz"). At this point, I'd say it's moot, but you can revert Revision of Category:Sockpuppets_of_Playtime_is_over if you want. Guanaco (talk) 07:32, 14 April 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. I also identify Mrez9802 as Russavia. Most probably “sockpuppets of Playtime is over” was made up by the troll—then in power—to conceal his own puppetry; a view shared by yet another Commons member. The next question: whose sock was Wikihelper1997 (talk · contribs · count · global contribs)? Incnis Mrsi (talk) 07:48, 14 April 2018 (UTC)
@Incnis Mrsi: I'm not sure. It's very possible WMF locked some Russavia-related troll accounts as "WMF banned user", because it might be Russavia and certainly was up to no good. Probably best to just leave old socks alone. Guanaco (talk) 07:52, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

Uploads for GENCODE(ru) article

Good afternoon!

I have changed license type for my previous uploads from CC-3.0 to PD-USGov-NIH (since those figures were taken from scientific papers from PubMed and now they are public domain). I thought this is correct, so I do not understand the reason for deletion of my last uploads.
Best regards, Boiko.sash (talk) 14:33, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

@Boiko.sash: This is a common area of confusion. Unfortunately PD-USGov only applies to content which was created by a federal worker in an official capacity. To assess this, we have to look closely for authorship information. Sometimes we can use context as a last resort, but we must always be careful. With these, we can see that the authors of these articles are affiliated with foreign, state, and private institutions, not the US federal government. [2] PubMed by its nature is predominantly not PD-USGov, so we need the source page to show a free license as with File:GENCODE pipeline.gif. Guanaco (talk) 21:06, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for your kindness and report on my IP addresses and Internet system, Philippines

Good morning and thanks for your message; Thanks for your kindness, Guanaco; as history of my editing, at first, I rented computers in Internet cafes here Philippines, until I bought a computer for about 300 dollars or P 15,000 because I was able to subscribe to Globe broadband where the internet speed in Uploading is now about 4 mbps but slow download of only .05 or less; I am copying here the Subnet - 192.168.254.0 / 255.255.255. Dns extension - homerouter.cpe Dhcp address: 192.168.254.254 Home network Network 3 from this Globe, but I have not yet copied the rented IP Address shown in the Block which I failed to copy last night; maybe that is the IP address of this Computer which I bought, I believe that this IP Adress which repeatedly vandalizes is used by renting users; as proof, when I would open the edit button to copy some links and descriptions of images I uploded, and I am not logged, I repeatedly found vandalism blocks of my IP Adress; but, when I log in as UIser:Judgefloro, I am not blocked from editing; I did not know that when I bought this Computer, the IP Address is shared by those renting the other computers of the shop, but I do not want to buy a new one because this one is good and fast in memory and does not go wrong since 4 years ago; I am afraid to buy new ones, that are difficult to handle; please I am age 64 a senior citizen of Commons, Very sincere, and regards--Judgefloro 04:20, 18 April 2018 (UTC) (talk)

Many thanks again for your kindess and help; I think that my IP Address goes with the physical computer that I bought; I used this computer which was in an internet cafe of gamers; using the same for 2 months convinced me to buy it from the owner who sold all his computers due to transfer of shop; please help me if later on I will have problems with editing; I think this only happened last night where I am not blocked but the IP Adress which necessarily prevented me from editing for the first time; I hope for your kind understanding since during our times from 1960's we never had the Internet only manual typewriters; I am trying to learn, but I cannot comprehend all the basics of these complicated tools of Commons, I respectfully remain very sincerely yours, and best regards -Judgefloro 16:10, 18 April 2018 (UTC) (talk)

Why are you not a bureaucrat?

Hello.
You should be one of Commons’ bureaus. First, you can—and do—explain your position verbally, using valid arguments without “I am a sysop with 100,500 logged actions”-like stuff explicit or implied. Second, you can produce solutions not only push on privileged links. Third, you are not from Wikipedia establishment. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 09:55, 24 April 2018 (UTC)

Maybe someday, if more people are needed to assign bot, translation admin, and sysop flags. I appreciate the thought. Guanaco (talk) 20:35, 27 April 2018 (UTC)

New to Wikipedia Commons // Need help with learning how to upload images that are self owned

Hi,

@Zubin1: If you are the photographer, you can add {{Consent}} to the licensing section, indicating that the subject of the photo agreed to the photo being taken and published here. If you are not the photographer, or there is a deletion request asserting copyright or personality rights problems, we use email verification to confirm permission. File:World Map of Y-DNA Haplogroups.png

Hello, I am Irish1028. A few months ago, you blocked me from modifying the picture file for the Haplogroup article. I did not want to destroy the article blindly. Irish1028 (talk)

In the part of Japan in the picture, red means the influence of the Northeast Asian blood system and pink means the influence of the Southeast Asian blood system. Since the native Southeast Asian Jomons were encroached by the immigrants of Northeast Asia, they should explain that the color red is dominant in Japan's ethnic makeup. So, we tried to supplement the file with a red dot, as it could cause misunderstanding among those who see the picture(pink on the main island of Honshu and red on Kyushu, This is because the Jomon family can seem to be superior to the Yayoi people. A number of scholars(like Havard University Professor William W. Howells, UCLA Professor Jared Diamond) have found that 60 to 70 percent of Japanese descent is from YayoI, and 20 to 30 percent are from Jomon. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Irish1028 (talk • contribs) 18:14, 16 June 2018 (UTC)

Everyone has long known that soccer.ru has given permission. But there is always a person who will put on removal. At that time the section had the form "soccer 0010". Do you think that in a year this image has not been tested?! Before removing all check, and then take action. And now quickly go to the image page and remove the template! Hasta que mi amigo! Mr.Drax (talk) 06:07, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

@Mr.Drax: Now I know, the two are the same site. I wasn't sure what happened, but now I've found the image by changing the url from soccer0010.com to soccer.ru. It helps to tag images you upload from other sites with {{License review}}. Then a reviewer or admin will check the file and source, confirm it is fine, then sign the tag. If anything changes at the source, the review tag is proof that it was fine before. I've done this with this file. Guanaco (talk) 08:54, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi. I saw your upload, and it seems that the flag just like the previous one is a bad cdr conversion even if the size is smaller. There is a bug if you zoom in at the side of the crown, and also the strokes are incorrect. I have converted a cdr from http://www.parlament.gov.rs/narodna-skupstina-/vazna-dokumenta.935.html to svg that you can find here http://www.mediafire.com/file/ny6cpsbj76udku5/Flag_of_Serbia.svg/file Compare them and if you can replace the current one with the one I converted. User:Varavour mass uploaded many photos taken by Yemane Gebremeskel with false copyright information stating that the photos are in the public domain as their author is dead. This is a lie. I have tried to nominate File:JointDeclaration_2018.jpg for deletion since the photo is not in the public domain of Eritrea. The photo's author, Yemane Gebremeskel, is still alive. File:JointDeclaration_2018.jpg is under some protection and will need an administrator to nominate for deletion. Thank you. Turtlewong (talk) 02:55, 11 July 2018 (UTC)

@Turtlewong: According to the {{PD-Eritrea}} template, "Eritrean photographs are only protected if they are part of a collection or book, or bear the name and address of the author or their agent. In all other cases, photographs are not protected by copyright (Article 1662)." This is certainly an unusual law, but it seems to be valid. Why my hard work is deleted

Hello wiki..

iam dr devgan i am a practicing doctor in India . I have nearly spent 3 months to find the complete information about dr hema chandran (Best scientist of india award winner )

we have all evidence that he has won the award and so i have worked hard and i have created my article but why the hell without any notice you people delete my work if you are not interested you may report and i would have given proof i ave attached all news paper and magazine with this mail and i have also added the source content of my article i need my article to be published again. kindly do so.

my source content (Large biography removed from this talk page)

Hello. I will explain the reasons why your content has been removed.
  1. This is Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia. Here, we accept educational, freely licensed media files (images, video, and audio). We do not accept biographies. We also do not accept promotional content, nor does Wikipedia.
  2. Wikipedia articles must be based on significant coverage in reliable sources, and these sources must support what the article says. If the sources don't exist, Wikipedia will not accept your original research.
  3. You have been blocked from editing, at least three times. It is considered sock puppetry to create new accounts or edit anonymously to evade a block. If you want to appeal your block, see Commons:Blocking policy#Appealing a block. Anything added by a sockpuppet account is likely to be deleted without notice.
Please stop attempting to promote Hema Chandran on Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia. You are wasting our time and yours. If you want to write about him, there are many blog hosting services you can use instead. Guanaco (talk) 17:57, 21 July 2018 (UTC)

Returning sock

The user behind this deletion request, who is a known sockpuppeteer on en.wiki, is back as User:WildFilmsIndia34478 and has uploaded the same/similar file as was deleted (compare with possibly, this one). Can you take a look? Abecedare (talk) 02:13, 23 July 2018 (UTC)

@Abecedare: I can confirm that the two images are the same, and I've deleted the new one. However the file descriptions are different and this one doesn't claim own work. It's probably a sock, but I'll have to wait for more behavioral evidence or checkuser to block. Guanaco (talk) 02:30, 23 July 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. That sound fine. In case it helps in identification: here is an AN report of the earlier accounts. Abecedare (talk) 02:40, 23 July 2018 (UTC)

Hey Guanaco, there has been some updates on the deletion request. I strongly believe that I have offered satisfactory rebuttals to the arguments for 'keep' on the discussion, and it would be awesome if you could take another look at it. Thanks! BreadBuddy (talk) 16:53, 23 July 2018 (UTC)

Chloë Grace Moretz 's Photo deletion

Hi Dear Guanaco, How can I find & suggest a copyright free 2018 photo of Chloë Grace Moretz a Hollywood Actress to be replaced by the one 2014 existed in her below mentioned page in Wikipedia?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chlo%C3%AB_Grace_Moretz

I suggested her recent photo from her personal page in facebook! Actually I have asked her to release her new photo to be used in wikipedia!

https://www.facebook.com/xoxoChloeGMoretz/photos/a.1734435813470495.1073741843.1725335367713873/2150268768553862/?type=3&theater

Why wikipedia doesn't accept her personal photo from her facebook page to be used in her wikipedia page? Then where can I find an acceptable copyright free photo of her for wikipedia?

Thank you in advance --Savatark (talk) 14:16, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Savatark (talk • contribs) 12:19, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

@Savatark: I looked on Flickr for a recent photo, but there were none we could accept. Our copyright rules are very strict, and for any image, we need an explicit license that allows anyone to use it for any purpose. This makes Wikimedia Commons a good resource for reusable content, but the trade-off is we don't always have a recent photo.
If you're able to contact her or someone who has taken a good photo of her, we'll need the photographer to give permission. This is usually done by emailing our permissions team, using a standard template. Guanaco (talk) 12:33, 24 July 2018 (UTC)
@Guanaco:

Thank you for your fast reply. 1- I am sending her your comments for presenting a recent photo by her or by a photographer's permission! 2- Please return the previous image of Chloe Grace Moretz on Wikipedia! the upper photo cannot be seen!

why did you delete my file?

Hello,

Please check this file https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:%D0%9E%D0%B1%D0%BB%D0%BE%D0%B6%D0%BA%D0%B0_%D0%B0%D0%BB%D1%8C%D0%B1%D0%BE%D0%BC%D0%B0_%22%D0%9C%D0%B0%D0%B3-%D0%BD%D0%B8-%D1%82%D1%8B%22_(2016).png I was editing the page of this album and took the file from my work (I work for the singer of this album). If you can, please undelete the file, because the distribution of the artwork is legal, due to Luna Prod. and Kruzheva Music copyrights. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ananasnysok (talk • contribs) 00:46, 25 July 2018 (UTC)

@Ananasnysok: Hi, in order to verify that you work for the singer and are authorized to license the image, we require an email. See OTRS for more information on this process. Once we've received and processed your email, we will undelete the image. Guanaco (talk) 00:55, 25 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Guanaco,

I am the author of this image. Unfortunately, I seem not to get access to the OTRS so I don't see what's the problem with it?

If needed I happily sign a pdf with a qualified signature according to swiss law https://www.seco.admin.ch/seco/en/home/Standortfoerderung/KMU-Politik/E-Economy_E-Government/E-Government/suisseid-identitaetsnachweis-und-digitale-signatur.html to fully and legally binding state my authorship and confirm its CC0 attribution.

Many thanks for any hints in advance

@Someone25: We can only accept files which are free for anyone to use, modify, reproduce, and distribute for any purpose, even commercially or against the interests of the author. If a file is less free than this, it's outside the scope of this project. We allow three Creative Commons licenses: Zero (CC0 or public domain), Attribution (BY), and Attribution-ShareAlike (BY-SA).
If you represent BUGA, I recommend BY-SA 4.0. This license lets anyone use the file and even create and sell derivative works, but there's a catch: anything derived from your file must also be licensed under BY-SA, and you must always be given credit. We also require an email to verify that you're authorized to license the file, because they are previously published logos. See OTRS for information on this. Guanaco (talk) 07:50, 25 July 2018 (UTC)

Unsourced derivative photos

Hi, I recently saw you tagged my most recent 7 uploads for deletion. Proper sources have been added to 3 of 7 images. The rest I no longer use and can be deleted when you have the chance. Is sourcing I added proper / well enough? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Redditaddict69 (talk • contribs) 09:26, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

@Redditaddict69: I removed the tag from the ones where you added a source and deleted the others. The source you gave is enough information, but I'm not sure about their licensing terms:

These Terms don’t grant us (and we don’t claim) any ownership rights in Your Content."

"“Your Content” means, collectively, (1) the Content posted, provided, uploaded, submitted, shared, published, distributed, made available, accessible or usable by you on, to, from or through the Service (and any translations thereof); and (2) your specific output generated from the Service, if any, based on your own raw data or information; Expressly excluded from Your Content are any of Our Materials.

We generally only accept maps where the original is freely licensed or in the public domain. One option would be to edit File:Blank US Map (states only).svg in a text editor, replacing the color code for each state with the color of your choice. It's not as easy as the mapchart.net tool, but it should be fairly simple. Guanaco (talk) 10:19, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

Very questionable user

Check this (his files haven't been vandalised), his user page (featuring File:Alfred E. Neumann.jpg) and everything in this DR and I'll be amazed if CerroFerro isn't a sock. But without more solid evidence I guess I can't report them? - Alexis Jazz ping plz 20:12, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

@Alexis Jazz: Without some idea of who the master would be, it's hard to make a case. I found unblock requests at en:User talk:CerroFerro, and it seems checkuser was run in May to investigate the mystery blocks. My opinion is we should assume good faith and try to help. This gives me some hope. Guanaco (talk) 00:42, 28 July 2018 (UTC)

One-click archiver

Hoping you can help - I use the one-click archiver script that's available on en.WP and was wondering if that script could be modified to use on Commons or if we have a similar script? There is also this script which does the same thing. Please ping so I'll remember to check back. 😊 Atsme 📞 21:10, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

@Atsme: To import a script from a different wiki, you have to do mw.loader.load('//en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Technical_13/Scripts/OneClickArchiver.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript');
I've imported it to MediaWiki:OneClickArchiver.js and enabled this local copy for you. Let me know if you have any trouble with it. Guanaco (talk) 00:56, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
Thank you so much for trying, Guanaco, but something still isn't working. See my en.WP page here. There's a button named Archive on the right side of the section title. On my Discussion page here on Commons, the button doesn't show up, so it's not one-click archiving. I'm wondering if the problem lies in the User Talk vs User Discussion command?? Atsme 📞 16:24, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
@Atsme: It works for me, and it shouldn't have anything to do with the talk or discussion label, which is just a system message. Have you tried bypassing your cache? Guanaco (talk) 08:50, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
Guanaco - it does work!!! I changed to desktop view in lieu of mobile view which is the default for iPad, and voila!! There it was. THANK YOU!! Atsme 📞 14:38, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

Give your feedback about changes to Special:Block

Hello,

You are receiving this message because you are a top user of Special:Block on this wiki. Thank you for the important work that you do. There is a discussion happening about plans to improve Special:Block with the ability to set new types of blocks. To get the best design and new functions added, it is essential that people who use the tool join the discussion and share their opinions about these changes.

Instead of a full site wide block, you would be able to set a Partial Block. A user could be blocked from a single page, multiple pages, one or more namespaces, from uploading files, etc. There are several different ways to add this feature to Special:Block. Right now Important decisions are being made about the design and function.

Please review the page on Meta and share your feedback on the discussion page. Or you can reach me by email Also, share this message with anyone else who might be interested in participating in the discussion.

I appreciate any time that you can give to assist with making improvements to this feature. Cheers, SPoore (WMF) (talk) , Trust and Safety Specialist, Community health initiative (talk) 02:00, 10 August 2018 (UTC)

@Alexis Jazz: ✓ Done for three days. Ultimately the decision is yours, and I'll block you again if you confirm you want to leave indefinitely. There are problems with how your participation here is affecting yourself and the project, and you recognize that compulsive behavior is a part of the issue. I see broken processes here, both in our minds and in the systems we've built to collaborate. In the face of addiction, self-denial can be a powerful choice, but it is one you will have to make again and again. You will eventually fail unless you find something more satisfying. Take three days, consider how your time can be best spent, then come back and focus on different areas of the wiki. Or don't, and focus on different areas of your life. Hi

Hi, my friend I uploaded a new file File:Empress Lu Zhi (Han Dynasty).jpeg to commons that could be verified for me Thank you Moataz zintani (talk) 13:57, 16 September 2018 (UTC)

@Moataz zintani: It seems to be a recent artwork by Ms. Zou Li, an artist who paints in traditional Chinese style. Her works resemble old, public domain art, but I believe this image is recent, copyrighted, and not freely licensed. Guanaco (talk) 22:44, 16 September 2018 (UTC)

Hi, Guanaco. You edited template Blocked user/en. In the past it was used with 2 parameters; you removed both. I used them extensively to explain reason and length of block, sometimes in two languages: one language for blocked user, the other (English) for other users, for example in user talk:Datskaya koroleva. Now the template says "The reason for the block is available in the block log". This is sometimes not enough: reason can be longer than block log accepts. I am not satisfied with the edits. Taivo (talk) 19:15, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

@Taivo: Thanks for telling me about this. I'll fix this and the other two templates. Guanaco (talk) 20:22, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
✓ Done. This one is fixed, and the other two seem fine. Guanaco (talk) 20:47, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
I think you added an extra right curly bracket somewhere - see User talk:69.178.192.41 for an example where it says "The reason for the block is 3 days}". I'm apparently too sleepy to successfully fix it myself. Cheers, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 06:55, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
@Pi.1415926535: I fixed the bracket, but you also have the duration and reason switched. The way you have it makes more sense IMO, but it's been this way for a long time. Guanaco (talk) 17:26, 18 September 2018 (UTC)

@Moataz zintani: It still seems that the creator of the image is Ms. Zou Li. This means we need her permission to upload it. Without a free license from her, it will be unsuitable for Commons until the copyright expires 70 years after her death. Guanaco (talk) 15:04, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

Is it getting better?

Just a little update about Jcb. Probably no reason for action atm, just making notes. I don't actively stalk Jcb - that would probably be too depressing anyway. So I likely miss stuff.

File:Miranda Esmonde-White.jpg

Deleted by Jcb: "No OTRS permission for 30 days". According to Commons:Village pump#Portrait deleted (only reason I know about this) permission was given on September 7. Jcb admits the ticket exists. The sensible thing to do is to undelete (or have never deleted in the first place) and just extend the waiting time for OTRS to handle it. If there are severe doubts about the ticket I could understand, but I know SusanLesch so I don't believe this would be a scam or anything.

User talk:Jcb#Deletion of all files uploaded by User:Schaller GmbH

Jcb deleted all files from Schaller GmbH after they were undeleted. Before you ask: yes, most reasonably educated Dutch people can be expected to know what GmbH means. Which should be a reason to check their user page. But okay, I won't fault Jcb for not checking the user page. Maybe he overlooked the GmbH bit or whatever. When clpo13 pointed all this out, Jcb was perfectly capable of seeing the OTRS on the user page, added by an OTRS agent. And with the identity verified, there was no reason to leave the files deleted. But Jcb insisted someone had to check the OTRS again and wasn't able to access the ticket himself. Jcb also didn't appear to have bothered to ping a German OTRS volunteer so it could be taken care of. Two weeks later Neozoon stepped in and resolved the case.

As I said, just making notes. Your talk page is probably not the ideal place, but I have no idea where else to go. I don't believe anything good would come from it if I would put this on Jcb's talk page. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 23:38, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

This is fine. I looked into File:Miranda Esmonde-White.jpg and replied to the ticket, as there are some issues needing clarification. I would characterize Jcb's handling of this one as less than thorough, but well within current policy. I think the Schaller GmbH deletion was a reasonable mistake, but when asked about it he should have accepted the info-de agent's verification unless he had specific concerns. When someone challenges a DR closure, it's the admin's responsibility to investigate. Guanaco (talk) 02:17, 3 October 2018 (UTC)

What do you think about Commons:Deletion requests/File:Blue winged leafbird.jpg? If this gets deleted, we'll probably end up losing hundreds (thousands?) of similar PD-self photos from Ltshears. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 17:21, 8 October 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: I added {{Own assumed}} and responded at the DR. There was a time when {{Information}} and variants were commonly not used, and PD-self was sufficient copyright info. Guanaco (talk) 06:20, 10 October 2018 (UTC)
User talk:Jcb#File:Fire engine hose fittings, Redcliffe - Moreton Bay (40068746175).jpg - the nicest user ever, asking an admin to make absolutely sure they've got it right. Too bad they asked Jcb, as it resulted in Commons:Deletion requests/File:Fire engine hose fittings, Redcliffe - Moreton Bay (40068746175).jpg "No valid explanation for PD. Not old enough for {{PD-Australia}}."
Actually, it is.. But of course, when the Queensland government says the copyright has expired, we should not believe them because Jcb knows better. It may be true that this photo is more than 50 years old and owned by the state, but those are exactly the requirements for {{PD-Australia}} and because of that, it is not in the public domain. This makes perfect sense. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 15:47, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
Alexis Jazz, could you please stop stalking me? Your desperate attempt to get me desysopped has failed. Get over it. Jcb (talk) 16:28, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
I'm a general (talk page stalker). Your talk page is on my watchlist. I'm not stalking you. You wish. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 18:27, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz and Jcb: If there are concerns and Alexis isn't comfortable leaving them on Jcb's talk page, I think it may be beneficial to discuss the issues here. It's certainly more productive than AN/U. Alexis can state the concerns, and I'll give my honest opinion. Maybe I have some insight; maybe not. You can both act accordingly or carry on as you will. Guanaco (talk) 06:11, 10 October 2018 (UTC)
No, you are facilitating a witch hunt that should not take place in the first pace and you are not good at it. Like you already did in the previous AN/U topic, you make statements without bothering to verify whether they are correct. E.g. you wrote: "but when asked about it he should have accepted the info-de agent's verification unless he had specific concerns", which does not make sense, since I wrote at my user talk page: "Ok. If a DE Wiki OTRS agent confirms to me that the ticket is valid for these files, I can undelete them." and as you can see the first message I got from a DE wiki agent was "I undeleted all the relevant files after checking the ticket". So you are agreeing with Alexis Jazz that I would do a bad job, without checking the facts first. That's unbecoming vor an admin, don't do it. Jcb (talk) 08:57, 10 October 2018 (UTC)
Am I not good at it, or is it that we disagree on some fundamental issues? I know you do good work, and I also think you treat files with a presumption of guilt, deleting because you don't have all the facts. When you were unaware of the OTRS verified tag, deletion made sense based on the available facts. When you became aware of the template, I think you should have recognized your likely mistake and undeleted at that point. To be clear, by "info-de agent's verification" I meant this edit. If that isn't prima facie evidence that User:Schaller GmbH represents the company, I don't know what is. Guanaco (talk) 19:07, 10 October 2018 (UTC)
Thank you Guanaco. I'm indeed not comfortable leaving concerns on Jcb's talk page and he's demonstrated here why I'm not comfortable doing that. For the same reason I generally don't respond on his DRs. Jcb, you said "Your desperate attempt to get me desysopped has failed. Get over it.", I'd like to refer to the desysop thread: "We will re-evaluate Jcb's actions in the near future, and I expect to see improvement both in our tone and in Jcb's accuracy."
Obviously, if I write nothing down there won't be much to discuss when that re-evaluation comes. For obvious reasons I'd rather not make these notes on Jcb's talk page. I could make them in my user space or even off-wiki, but if I do that the response will be "well why didn't you bring up these issues when they happened?" so.. not a good idea either.
After what I explained above and clpo13 also explained on Commons:Deletion requests/File:Fire engine hose fittings, Redcliffe - Moreton Bay (40068746175).jpg one would expect Jcb to say "oops, my bad, {{Withdrawn}}". Did that happen? Nope. When I said "when the Queensland government says the copyright has expired, we should not believe them because Jcb knows better" I was being sarcastic. I actually assumed Jcb didn't sufficiently scrutinize the case (which he was specifically asked to scrutinize on his talk page, he didn't just run into the file). My sarcasm was misplaced: "The question is: do we have evidence that the author is "Commonwealth, State or Territory"? I did not see such evidence." Jcb really does believe he knows better than the Queensland government?? Truth is stranger than fiction. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 09:35, 10 October 2018 (UTC)

Structured Data - IRC office hours today, 4 October

There will be an IRC office hour for Structured Data on Commons today, 4 October 2018, from 17:00-18:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office. You can find date/time conversion, as well as a link to join the chat in your browser if needed, on the IRC Office hours page on Meta. Question about licensing

Which license can I use for work that's someone elses? — Preceding unsigned comment added by HutheMeow (talk • contribs)

(talk page stalker) @HutheMeow: only the copyright holder gets to choose a licence. Use whatever free licence is already on the work. If there’s no such licence already, uploading it here is probably not allowed.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:34, 27 October 2018 (UTC)

What if the photo license is not privided, can it be any level of licensing? — Preceding unsigned comment added by HutheMeow (talk • contribs)

(talk page stalker) @HutheMeow: what photo are we talking about? A photo can be in the public domain for various reasons, but we can't help you if we don't know what this is about. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 03:56, 27 October 2018 (UTC)

Concern about advice

At Commons:Village pump/Archive/2018/07#Bought negative and copyright I read the good faith advice as generally there should be no problem.

However I have now been challenged and images relating to the following tickets are now up for deletion:

Ticket @ Date(Approx) : Images: Photographer [Ticket#: 2018080610008362] : 6 August 2018: 1 image : (Photographer A J Cocker)

## - This is not currently challenged

[Ticket#: 2018081510007981] : 15 August 2018: 5 images : (Photographer A J Cocker) [Ticket#: 2018100510003784] : 5 October 2018: 2 images : (Photographer A J Cocker) [Ticket#: 2018102110001942] : 21 October 2018 : 6 images : (Photographer Alan Chandler)

## - Different seller and Copyright not passed on sale but on email confirmation.

I am obviously concerned OTRS may not accept my evidence and am concerned how I have used the advice. If the response had been sooner I would have been more accepting of the situation. Do you have any advice on how I am to proceed ... ? The OTRS response Please send us a copy of the document in which the photographer (or their legal heir) agreed to transfer the copyright to you. is something I had not gathered from your response ... and may not be achievable in practice.

Thankyou

Djm-leighpark (talk) 11:47, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

Guanaco wrote to you: "if the copyright holder said in writing they are transferring the copyright to you". This is in fact the same as what I requested you to send in the ticket. It's indeed unfortunate that OTRS is so backlogged. We are all volunteers and we are severely understaffed. And I am aware that it is not always achievable to establish a valid copyright situation. There are a lot of things we would like to have a picture of at our servers, but unfortunately it's not always possible to get a picture with sufficient permission. Jcb (talk) 16:11, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
  • Appreciate what you are saying ... we are all mostly volunteers ... however the 'Copyright holder has said they are transferring the copyright to me', and I have provided that, unless the person telling me that is lying. Probably it would have been better to have been pointed elsewhere or told something else ... or more likely requesting a provenance trail from the original owner if that is what is required. It maybe I should be raising this process (Copyright chain) elsewhere ( e.g. Commons talk:OTRS ) ; as it may be this scenario can have a better workflow or clearer and less unambiguous advice in future. If I had been told to show a trail from the original copyright holder would that surely not be better advice. Or perhaps I should have been told to raise at COM:ON rather than having an answer from Village Pump ? Djm-leighpark (talk) 17:00, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
  • @Jcb. Although you have said it I have just fully caught on (understood) you are the OTRS volunteer who sent the permissions challenge email. I think some issues are arising because I can claim to be the copyright holder. I this it will be useful (for me and perhaps others) to raise this case at COM:ON, which I will likely do at some point perhaps later today or shortly after. I can totally appreciate Guanaco and yourself have acted in totally good faith ... and I also observe Guanaco has not edited recently for whatever reason and I can totally appreciate there are many real life reaons for non reply.Djm-leighpark (talk) 09:24, 31 October 2018 (UTC)
Please note I have also realised I missed at email from Jcb@permissions before writing this comment. I have a slightly fluid situation at present and will present at COM:ON when more stable. Thankyou to Jcb for your comments ... in essence I am making efforts to improve the provenance trail. Djm-leighpark (talk) 10:37, 31 October 2018 (UTC)

Structured Data - IRC office hour today, 1 November

The above message says 1 October in the body when it should say 1 November, as the subject line says. Apologies for making a new section by mass message, it's the only way to get this out quickly. See you in twenty minutes! -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 16:37, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

Structured Data - copyright and licensing statements

I've posted a second round of designs for modeling copyright and licensing in structured data. These redesigns are based off the feedback received in the first round of designs, and the development team is looking for more discussion. These designs are extremely important for the Commons community to review, as they deal with how copyright and licensing is translated from templates into structured form. I look forward to seeing you over there. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 16:25, 2 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi

You have protected File:Parliament of Turkey 2018 current.svg. But a new file File:Parliament of Turkey 2018 updated.svg have been created. So, now it is not necessary to keep the current situation. And the file is called current but the file is outdated. --Panam2014 (talk) 15:33, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

@Panam2014: The "current" file doesn't seem to have ever existed. Let me know if there's one by another name to delete. Guanaco (talk) 10:23, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

Welcome back!

A kitten for you!
We missed you. Is December still on schedule? I've collected some more information. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 18:00, 22 November 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: Lately I've had more than my share of interpersonal conflict off-wiki, so I'm not sure how soon I'll be able to oversee a major community debate like this, and there are the holidays. If not December, January. Guanaco (talk) 08:07, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
I understand. Your mental well-being is more important than overseeing a community debate. There are some things you can do to help though that shouldn't be too taxing: you can say publicly that you consider this to be a personal attack (or I may get accused of making stuff up again) and when there is an evaluation, it will be important to have you saying you support the evaluation (else it could rapidly be shut down). Ideally we keep control over when that happens and ideally you would start the discussion about that. It don't think I will as long as you can. Jcb just deleted my essays, that's even more personal than a plain "fuck you". Simple insults I can deal with, but this.. But I was able to keep it in. So I should be okay. Another thing that'll help will be if you (once it's more finished) could comment on the Jcb file (the new one). And of course you're always welcome at the The Dumpster Fire. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 08:41, 23 November 2018 (UTC)

Guanaco, can you please declare that you will refrain from assisting Alexis Jazz in their disrupting behaviour? Jcb (talk) 15:01, 23 November 2018 (UTC)

Don't let Jcb intimidate you Guanaco. You are not alone. Far from it. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 15:37, 23 November 2018 (UTC)

Delete a photo

Hello, can you just take a look at this (زواج مغربي couple marocaine.jpg) I know that there is nothing false with the copyright or any thing else, but it violates the life of the couple, as it was taken without permission and nothing prove that.

Another thing, it is not a good thing in the Arab world to publish such as pictures; because it is considered to be shameful by many societies in the Arab world, and it may cause problems for the couple.

I'm sorry if my English language is not good, and I wish that you take these cultural differences into account to help them to delete the picture as they have attemped to delete it.

Thank you in advance. الرشيد (talk) 17:29, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

Mhhossein

Hello.
You are the last admin granting any privilege to this Commons user. Moreover, you are a veteran en.Wikipedian. Can you please look at Commons:Administrators/Requests/Mhhossein to:

  1. assess the situation in general;
  2. cleanup the mess left in File:主-bronze.svg (histlogsabuse log) by Mhhossein and other clumsy users.

The adminship candidate himself miserably failed to advance the latter task, whereas I don’t have sysop privilege necessary for these operations, myself. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 12:55, 5 December 2018 (UTC)
BTW the ancient scripts mess is even worse than appeared initially. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 13:58, 5 December 2018 (UTC)

I split the old version of the file back to File:主-bronze.svg. I'll look into the RFA in general. Guanaco (talk) 04:32, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

Multilingual captions beta testing

The Structured Data on Commons team has begun beta testing of the first feature, multilingual file captions, and all community members are invited to test it out. Captions is based on designs discussed with the community[4][5] and the team is looking forward to hearing about testing. If all goes well during testing, captions will be turned on for Commons around the second week of January, 2019.

Multilingual captions are plain text fields that provide brief, easily translatable details of a file in a way that is easy to create, edit, and curate. Captions are added during the upload process using the UploadWizard, or they can be added directly on any file page on Commons. Adding captions in multiple languages is a simple process that requires only a few steps.

The details:

  • There is a help page available on how to use multilingual file captions.
  • Testing will take place on Beta Commons. If you don’t yet have an account set up there, you’ll need one.
  • Beta Commons is a testbed, and not configured exactly like the real Commons site, so expect to see some discrepancies with user interface (UI) elements like search.
  • Structured Data introduces the potential for many important page changes to happen at once, which could flood the recent changes list. Because of this, Enhanced Recent Changes is enabled as it currently is at Commons, but with some UI changes.
  • Feedback and commentary on the file caption functionality are welcome and encouraged on the discussion page for this post.
  • Some testing has already taken place and the team are aware of some issues. A list of known issues can be seen below.
  • If you discover a bug/issue that is not covered in the known issues, please file a ticket on Phabricator and tag it with the “Multimedia” tag. Use this link to file a new task already tagged with "Multimedia."

Known issues:

Thanks!

Hi Guanaco, I hope you're having a merry Christmas. If you have time, could you check the source and licensing on this file? It incorporates an ubuntu screencap and artwork by Black Shade 9. The artwork has been released under cc-zero, and Black shade 9's flickr account seems trustworthy, however, Patrick Rogel believes the source information is incomplete. Could you take a look and make a decision on this matter? Thanks for your time. Nevadawest (talk) 23:54, 22 December 2018 (UTC)

Notification about possible deletion

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Structured Data - file captions coming this week (January 2019)

Hi all, following up on last month's announcement...

Multilingual file captions will be released this week, on either Wednesday, 9 November or Thursday, 10 November 2019. Captions are a feature to add short, translatable descriptions to files. Here's some links you might want to look follow before the release, if you haven't already:

  1. Read over the help page for using captions - I wrote the page on mediawiki.org because captions are available for any MediaWiki user, feel free to host/modify a copy of the page here on Commons.
  2. Test out using captions on Beta Commons.
  3. Leave feedback about the test on the captions test talk page, if you have anything you'd like to say prior to release.

Additionally, there will be an IRC office hour on Thursday, 10 January with the Structured Data team to talk about file captions, as well as anything else the community may be interested in. Date/time conversion, as well as a link to join, are on Meta.

Thanks for your time, I look forward to seeing those who can make it to the IRC office hour on Thursday. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 20:22, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
