Uploading SVG File, "File did not pass verification"

Howdy! I'm trying to upload some maps but whenever I try to upload the SVG file, I get the error "File did not pass verification". The maps were exported as SVGs directly from ArcGIS pro, and open just fine in vector editors like Inkscape. The files are quite large but are under 100mb. I've uploaded the files here to google drive if someone would like to try uploading them. Let me know if you can help or need any more information. Thanks! LaMamelle (talk) 03:07, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

Disregard this, immediately found out the issue after posting, apparently embedding fonts within the SVG will cause this error. LaMamelle (talk) 03:31, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

How do I delete an image I created???

Here it is File:Cyril Soudant 2023.jpg

HOW do I do this? I didn't know the licencing wasn't ok.... AnthonyLSJ (talk) 02:20, 3 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi AnthonyLSJ. You can't delete the image yourself, but you can request that it be deleted per speedy deletion criterion G7. Just go to the file's page, click on "Edit" at the top of page, and then add the syntax for Template:SDG7 at the top of the editing window that appears. Click "Show preview" to check that things look OK, and then click "Publish changes" if they do. -- Marchjuly (talk) 03:05, 3 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi - I have uploaded a picture on wiki commons that I want to remove now. I don't want this picture to be publicly published.Could you help me with that ? Deepika257 (talk) 06:36, 4 March 2023 (UTC)

Edit the file page to include {{Speedydelete|Uploader request - mistake}}. As the upload was recent, that should suffice. –LPfi (talk) 08:14, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
Thanks - just added it to Caption. Deepika257 (talk) 09:49, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
Oops. I didn't think of the structured data. I cannot see the caption and the template doesn't seem to work there. I reverted your edit and added the template to the wikitext: Special:Diff/737783898/737829045. If the info is in the wikitext description, then, on desktop, you click the "edit" tab. Here a direct link: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Kebakaran_Depo_Pertamina_Plumpang_3_Maret_2023_CNN.jpg&action=edit. –LPfi (talk) 13:09, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
But I think the real problem is whether CNN Indonesia releases their photos with a free licence. I doubt, and if not, the photo must be deleted from Commons. Some other projects (such as Wikipedia in English) allow uploads as "fair use", if the file is included in some article. –LPfi (talk) 13:14, 4 March 2023 (UTC)

Updated image doesn't show

I have updated a mapping image I made; it is at Oke - ply map 1874.gif The map should have a yellow background, preferable to the earlier white background. If you go to its page here and click on the image, a largher version of the outdated image appears on the right of the screen. When I use the image in wikipedia at Exeter to Plymouth railway of the LSWR the old version of the image shows. How can I get the update to appear? Afterbrunel (talk) 06:55, 5 March 2023 (UTC)

I can see a new version of ur file. Please clear your browser's cache. Just press Alt+Shift+* or Ctrl+Shift+R (For windows). If u use Mac, Open the Finder window and press shift + command + G.--MehdiTalk 07:13, 5 March 2023 (UTC)
Thank you. But in the wikipedia article Exeter to Plymouth railway of the LSWR, the updated images don't appear. I originally designed them within wikipedia and have tried to transfer them to wikimedia and then updated; but the images in the wikipedia article are still the earlier wikipedia ones. Grateful for any guidance. Afterbrunel (talk) 12:11, 5 March 2023 (UTC)
Convenience links: en:Exeter to Plymouth railway of the LSWR#Railways to Exeter, en:File:Oke - ply map 1874.gif, File:Oke - ply map 1874.gif. For me the images show on their description pages and in the article. But you say you would like the Commons version to show – when there is a locally uploaded image and one on Commons by the same name, the local one is shown. For the Commons one to show, the Wikipedia one needs to be deleted (or either file moved to a unique name). –LPfi (talk) 12:25, 5 March 2023 (UTC)

Почему стали писать, что это гальюнные фигуры? Ведь гальюн - это туалет на судне. Раньше писали галеонные фигуры. What is: missing SDC copyright license?

I've just noticed that this category Self-published work missing SDC copyright license was added to my uploaded file. What does it mean? Should I do something myself?

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Self-published_work_missing_SDC_copyright_license MrPanyGoff 17:20, 8 March 2023 (UTC)

Generally, linking the specific file helps. However, here I see no problem. The category is a hidden maintenance category, so can be safely ignored by those who do not work with the maintenance. One of the boxes at the top of the category page says
"This category is used by bots syncing information to Structured Data on Commons (SDC). Any 'missing' information is already included in the file description pages and is being replicated in structured format."
It goes on telling what you can do if you don't want to wait until a bot fixes it automatically.

I was frustration with load for List of european jewish nobility but it won't post strauss family crest due to new or I don't understand what the message was trying to explain to me about load problem or else. Please help me to resolve the problem. Sidney&Iris (talk) 03:32, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

I don't understand your description of the problem. If you get an error message, try to copy it for pasting here. Somebody might recognise it and tell what it is about, or one could search for the message and find out what it means. You could simply try again, and if the problem persists, then copy the error message. –LPfi (talk) 18:53, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
OK. I found your upload attempt in a log. It seems you tried to upload the image in thumbnail size. Instead upload it at full size. The filter is more picky when it comes to uploads when editing an article. You could retry the upload using the upload link here at Commons: Special:UploadWizard. Often a thumbnail-sized image hints that you just found it on the net. Did you draw the coats of arms yourself? Otherwise you are not supposed to use {{Own}} as source nor your user name as author, and you should check copyright issues. –LPfi (talk) 19:02, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

Works of artistic craftsmanship v graphic works

I’m still not sure what’s the difference between these two terms when it comes to 2D freedom of panorama. For example, in Australia works of artistic craftsmanship are alright, but graphic works are not. So, would this file be a copyright violation or not? Best regards, RodRabelo7 (talk) 05:54, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

According to this: "Works of artistic craftsmanship include forms of artistic expression beyond the conventions of paintings, drawings and sculptures", for instance "hand painted tiles and stained glass". Ruslik (talk) 19:27, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

Logo upload

Hi, I'd like to upload the current logo of a new brand of the company I'm working for. It doesn't work. What do I have to do to make it happen? Lorena20min (talk) 07:36, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi Lorna20min. Before you do anything else, you might want to carefully read through Commons:Licensing to make sure you understand what it means to upload content to Commons. Many companies are highly protective of their intellectual property and uploading your company's logo to Commons might actually not be in the best interests of your company. Although logos can be uploaded to Commons, it's usually only done when the logo is considered to be too simple to be eligible for copyright protection or the copyright holder explicitly agrees to give their COM:CONSENT and agrees to release the logo under one of the free licenses that Commons accepts. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:19, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
As for the technical issue: you don't mention which of many methods you were using to upload the photo, but for beginners Special:UploadWizard is usually easiest. If it doesn't do exactly what you want, go in and edit the filepage after uploading. - Jmabel ! talk 16:13, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

Purging isn't working?

Uploaded a new version of File:Intel i486 logo.svg after I had mistakenly forgotten to convert text to paths, the SVG file itself is updated but the PNG thumbnail is stubbornly stuck at the first version, rendering the text elements with the sans font of the OG reviison instead of the text-to-path'ed custom font of the latest. Tried uploading a junk SVG and reverting, tried purging from multiple devices on different networks—still not budging. Is this a replication lag thing, or something else? DigitalIceAge (talk) 21:50, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

  • @DigitalIceAge: In most contexts, I'm seeing what you uploaded three times, but the file history is thumbnailing the latest upload looking like the original version.
Has to be some sort of caching thing, etc. Doubtless will eventually sort itself out.
In these contexts, I've never seen it actually be useful to upload additional times, upload a junk SVG, etc. - Jmabel ! talk 23:39, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

authorship of a photo of a published book photo

I found in google images the book cover image of a book that I am co-author and I would like to post such image in a wikipedia page. Is that legal? Or should I make a photo of the book cover myself, since I have one exemplar with me? Thak you for your support. Valdemar José Correia Barbosa Rodrigues (talk) 01:10, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi Valdemar José Correia Barbosa Rodrigues. If you're pt:Valdemar José Correia Barbosa Rodrigues, then you probably should take a careful look at pt:Wikipédia:Conflito de interesse before making any additional edits to the article. Generally, subjects of Wikipedia articles are considered to have a conflict of interest when it comes to editing content written about them on Wikipedia, but things might be different when it comes to Portuguese Wikipedia.
As for your question about taking a photo of the book, if you're the author of the book, then you could upload such a photo to Commons as long as you're the sole copyright holder of the book and whatever imagery appears on its cover. Please read Commons:Licensing because Commons will only be able to host such an image if you agree to make it avaiable under one of the free licenses that Commons accepts. If, on the other hand, others involved with the book (e.g. publisher, co-author) also can came copyright ownership over it, then you might need to get their COM:CONSENT as well for Commons to host the file. If you simply take a photo of the book cover yourself, then basically all you need to worry about is the copyright status of the book cover you photograph since you would be the copyright holder of the photograph. If, however, you try to upload someone else's photo, then it would depend on whether the other person's photo is a case of COM:2D copying. If it is, then you just need to worry about the copyright status of the book's cover; if it's not, then you will also need to consider the copyright status of the photo taken by the other person since it would be considered a derivative work. In short, it would probably be better to take your own photo of the book than to try and use other person's photo.
If it turns out the file is not suitable to be hosted by Commons, you could try to upload it locally to Portuguese Wikipedia as non-free content. Commons doesn't accept any type of fair use content as explained here, but Portuguese Wikipedia does seem to allow it per pt:Política de Isenção da Doutrina (PID). So, you will need to ask on Portuguese Wikipedia for details about its policy and whether it would allow you to add a non-free photo of your book to the Portuguese Wikipedia article written about you. For reference, such a thing isn't generally allowed by English Wikipedia, but Portuguese Wikipedia might have a non-free content use policy that is different from English Wikipedia's policy. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:37, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
Many thaks! I«ll just put an external link to the book cover image that is hosted in a book sellers page, In that case there will be no poroblems, righy? Thaks you very much anyway, your answer was very useful and enlightening. 85.139.112.180 01:47, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
You will need to ask about adding an external link over at Portuguese Wikipedia. On English Wikipedia, for instance, such an external link would probably not be allowed, but Portugeuse Wikipedia policy on external links might be different than English Wikipedia's. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:09, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

what if the image i put in already is on the website?

help i think i am.. gong to jial Stoove Joobs (talk) 22:56, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

  • @Stoove Joobs: we rarely imprison users (at least outside of certain counties in Texas), but we have been known to block them. So far, you are in little danger of that.
  • On the other hand, and most importantly: for the one and only photo you've uploaded so far: why do you think it is either public domain or free-licensed? My guess is that it isn't and we'll have to delete it.
  • On the question in your headline: typically, if we find a duplicate image, we usually delete the newer upload (and turn its name into a redirect), although if the new upload is higher resolution, we will delete the older one instead; this also sometimes involves some editing of the file page of the one that is kept, if the version to be deleted has useful information that is missing from the one we are keeping. This is for exact duplicates; if (for example) they are from a different print of a film photo, we usually keep both. There are a few other subtleties, but I'm guessing that was as much of an answer as you need at this time. Please do try not to upload duplicates: when you do you are making work for someone else. - Jmabel ! talk 23:31, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

These are my works, what information do I need to add to confirm this?

These are my works, what information do I need to add to confirm this? Around the Worls (talk) 06:59, 3 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi Around the Worls. Maybe the first thing you should do is read Commons:Own work and then self-assess which of the files you uploaded are really your work. You might also want to take a look at Commons:Licensing because "own work" has a very specific meaning when it comes to intellectual copyright. For example, if you walk out your front door and take a photo of the clouds in the sky, then that photo is 100% your own work and you are the sole copyright holder because neither clouds or the sky are eligible for copyright protection per se. However, if you take a photo of something created by someone else (e.g. a painting, sculpture, store sign, building), then it's quite possible that whatever you're photographing is protected by copyright and that copyright is held by someone else. Depending on the specific circumstances, your photo might be considered to be a derivative work, which means there are two copyrights that need assessing: the one for your photo and the one for whatever you photographed. Of course, what I've posted is a very oversimplified explanation of things, but copyright laws can be quite tricky and they can also vary quite a bit from country to country. So many of your uploads seem to have been deleted, but if you feel that any which were truly 100% your own work were deleted by mistake, please list the names of the files here and someone might be able to help you sort things out. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:39, 3 March 2023 (UTC)
Also, I see COM:SCOPE issues. For example, it is hard to see the use of File:Thomas Cranmer Canterbury Cathedral Kent.png, a low-res image with a large quantity of text so small as to be illegible. - Jmabel ! talk 18:25, 3 March 2023 (UTC)

@Adhambekbro: I assume many of them are in scope, as examples on the life of today's youth. Choose ones that you think are valuable from that perspective. Incorrect NJTransit Route icon colors

The background colors of the route icons for NJ Transit's Montclair-Boonton Line and Gladstone Branch are incorrect. The Montclair Boonton should be #E66B5B, and the Gladstone Branch should be #A2D5AE. The text of both files is correct and does not need to be changed. Unfortunately I am unsure how to go about correcting this. Courtesy ping @Jari Rauma: who fixed a similar issue last time. The Boston Railfan (talk) 14:55, 3 March 2023 (UTC)

Hello @The Boston Railfan: I can change the colors, but first tell me where you got the right colors and why you want the colors changed. Best regards. Jari Rauma (talk) 10:06, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
The pictures are ready. I would like some kind of confirmation of the right colors before uploading the images. Have the colors of the lines changed? How did the uploader of the original images get it so wrong? – In the Gladstone picture, the HSB change was -4°, -17%, 56% and the green level was 0.97. In Montclair delta HSB: 22°, 41%, 40% and finally red level 1.05. Jari Rauma (talk) 11:55, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
@Jari Rauma: See en:Module:Adjacent stations/NJ Transit. The Montclair Boonton Line is currently using the color code from the original ex-Erie Lackawanna Boonton Line, when in actuality the present-day NJT Montclair Boonton Line is a different service and has a different color. The Gladstone Branch color is currently exactly the same as the Morristown Line, which, although the Gladstone is a branch of the Morristown Main Line, is also incorrect as Gladstone trains are considered their own separate independent service. The Boston Railfan (talk) 16:13, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
@The Boston Railfan: The photos are now uploaded. The reason for the unusual HSB change was that now the colors between the letters and the background are also correct. Please put the next possible request on my talk page. Jari Rauma (talk) 20:59, 4 March 2023 (UTC)

How to format names

Edward DeGroff formats the name this way. So I made a category Category:Edward DeGroff. But the actual files very: "Edward De Groff", "Edward de Groff".

How should the category name be formatted? Thanks, Krok6kola (talk) 20:07, 3 March 2023 (UTC)

@Krok6kola, It would seem their surname varies across the web so imho it should follow EN and be "Edward DeGroff" - I've changed their name on the EN article to match the article title and have told people to seek consensus first before changing, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 20:19, 3 March 2023 (UTC)
"Edward de Groff" is the spelling chosen by the creator of the article, Pcmcglew, on the basis of the signature of the subject [1], which, if correct, seems a reasonable basis. Davey2010 changed it today to "Edward DeGroff", although, per his rationale, his change should have seeked consensus. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:09, 3 March 2023 (UTC)
@Asclepias, I'll be honest I don't really care what surname is used and I don't care enough to start an RFC on it - I simply figured it made more sense for everything to be consistent and people can fight over it at the talkpage but yes strictly speaking I should've got consensus for it myself,
I only cared enough to change it yesterday as it related to Commons otherwise I really wouldn't have bothered, I don't edit EN much at all and the subject isn't of my interest so I would've left it to EN had it not concerned Commons if that makes sense, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 21:07, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
But to answer the question specifically it should stay as "Edward DeGroff" and if it gets moved in the near future then it can be moved here too, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 21:10, 4 March 2023 (UTC)

Image infobox size

Hi, is there any way that I can arrange the images in consistent to each other to similar size especially on a comparitive article like an election article. For example: how do I arrange the images of the politicians in the infobox to a similar consistent size? Here:en:2014 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly election (Please tag me when you answer) Thank you. 456legend (talk) 15:35, 4 March 2023 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons Query Service 175.100.15.243 16:01, 4 March 2023 (UTC)

@456legend: What I can see, the images are the same size. The problem is that some are close-ups, while others include much more in addition to the face. One solution would be to crop all images to be similar in that respect (of course: upload under another filename). If the proportion of the photo that is face is the same, like-sized thumbnails will show the face equally large. –LPfi (talk) 20:34, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
@LPfi: Okay so this should work ig. Thank you 456legend (talk) 05:21, 5 March 2023 (UTC)
Not for use within an infobox, but the "packed" option on the <gallery> element can be useful for this. See Commons:Featured pictures/People for an example of using it well. Jmabel ! talk 05:44, 5 March 2023 (UTC)

Naoag (talk) 10:35, 5 March 2023 (UTC)

@Naoag: Yes, If your files comply with the commons copyright license, You can upload Your PDF files. About size limitation read this guide. --MehdiTalk 13:31, 5 March 2023 (UTC)
Thank you! Is it possible to publish individual jpgs created from the pdf under the same license with naming of the author?Naoag (talk) 15:11, 5 March 2023 (UTC)
YW. Yes. It is possible. Like photos in this category that Extracted from PDF file [2]. --MehdiTalk 15:55, 5 March 2023 (UTC)
@Naoag The size limitation guide seems a bit optimistic. In fact it is possible to upload files (pdf or other) with up to exactly 4.0GiB (4.294.967.296 Bytes). But most upload tools will not be able to do that. The UploadWizard will upload files of up to 600MB and sometimes 1.2GB. You can try the PDF with 1.65GB and may succeed, but you also may need to use a different tool. C.Suthorn (talk) 16:29, 5 March 2023 (UTC)

File Preview Not Updating

The previews (and file history thumbnails) for couple of files ([1] and [2]) I have uploaded are not updating. This is not an issue with browser cache because I have cleared it a number of times and the older version of the file shows in archived versions ([3] and [4]). The newer version did successfully upload because it appears correctly when viewing the original file and the correct version of the latter image appears in a Wikipedia article it is used in. In addition, if you use the animated history script to view an older version and then return to the most recent version, the preview correctly displays.

I found a previous discussion that appears to describe the same issue, but it didn't seem to be any particular help. Can any offer an explanation of what causes it or a solution for the issue? –Noha307 (talk) 18:47, 5 March 2023 (UTC)

-- Asclepias (talk) 22:34, 5 March 2023 (UTC)

The objects themselves are PD because of age, but photographs of 3D objects get a copyright of their own, such as in this case, and the licence (with its licensing requirement) is for using the photo. –LPfi (talk) 08:56, 9 March 2023 (UTC)
Also -- not applicable here, but just so you know -- in some countries moral rights of authors are separate from copyrights, and in those countries you still have to attribute work even after it has fallen into the public domain. - Jmabel ! talk 15:51, 9 March 2023 (UTC)
Jmabel is exactly right.
I still think that the plethora of license tags on that page is a little confusing,so I made an edit request at {{Walters Art Museum license/3D}} suggesting it to be packaged into a {{Licensed-PD}} frame which explains this. Felix QW (talk) 22:53, 10 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi, we contact you from Holaluz's Social Media Team. We would like to update our company's logo since the one currently appearing is an old version. [5] Holaluzcom (talk) 15:00, 10 March 2023 (UTC)

@Holaluzcom:
  • You cannot overwrite Logo de Holaluz .png with Holaluz Logo RGB Gradient (1)-2.jpg, because one is a PNG and the other is a JPG. Files can only be overwritten with files of the same type.
  • We usually don't overwrite historical versions of logos (see Commons:Overwriting existing files). This allows for the logo's change over time to be illustrated in the related Wikipedia article for example.
  • JPG is a sub-optimal file format for this kind of logo. Optimally it'd be an SVG or at least a PNG.
  • I edited wikidata:Q47170683 to contain the new logo and I edited es:Holaluz to use the logo from Wikidata.
  • I'd like to know when you started and stopped using the various versions of the logo, so this information can be added to the file description.

Uploading a photo

Who was the photographer? Ruslik (talk) 20:22, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
@Koizumi Chineko: There are two separate things going on here. Narrowly technically: if you upload from Special:UploadWizard rather than trying to cross-upload from Wikipedia, you'll almost certainly get around the technical problem. But Ruslik's question is very much to the point. Copyright belongs to the photographer, not the subject of the photo. - 01:15, 11 March 2023 (UTC)

The copyright is not disclosed on the website, making it an unknown license.

--Logic44YT (talk) 23:36, 10 March 2023 (UTC)

If you don't know the license, why do you upload the file? Anyhow, the copyright is quite explicitly stated at the website: ©2023 American Structurepoint - All Rights Reserved. Deleted. --rimshottalk 23:41, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
@Logic44YT: when in doubt, assume everything you find on the Internet to be protected by copyright and act accordingly.
Put another way, anything published in the United States after March 1989 is protected even if it lacks a copyright notice. Since that includes the entirety of the history of the World Wide Web, websites don't have to have a copyright notice to garner protections in the United States. In this case at the bottom of the page though, it did. Imzadi 1979  00:04, 11 March 2023 (UTC)

Перевірка файлів на ліцензію

як перевірити файл на відстуність, або наявність ліцензії? Dnttcm (talk) 11:31, 10 March 2023 (UTC)

@Dnttcm: Are you talking about determining the license of files someone else has already uploaded to Commons, or files from a third party that you want to upload to Commons?
(via Google translate) Ви говорите про визначення ліцензії на файли, які хтось інший уже завантажив на Commons, чи файли третьої сторони, які ви хочете завантажити на Commons?
Jmabel ! talk 16:01, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
Ті які я хочу завантажити, бо вже видалили чотири файли Dnttcm (talk) 08:59, 11 March 2023 (UTC)
If someone knowledgeable here speaks Ukrainian, please help out here!
That is complicated, especially since I know nothing about the particular files. The response is more complicated than I am comfortable working through with Google Translate, though you can put this through Google Translate and see if it is intelligible. In general:
  • If you took the photos yourself, and if they are not pictures of someone else's copyrighted work, you can choose a license (typically CC-BY-SA-4.0) and offer it.
  • Otherwise, unless either (1) the photos are already offered under an acceptable free license (which typically would be stated overtly on a page where they are posted on the Internet) or (2) you can convince the copyright-holder to offer them under a free license, you should not upload them to Commons.
  • Most (certainly over 95%) of what you will find on the Internet is not free-licensed. (If it's very old, or is the work of certain governments -- details vary -- it might be public domain.) That means that most of what you will find on the Internet should not be uploaded to Commons. For this 95+% of material, it is not a matter of "picking the correct license." There is no "correct license." The material is copyrighted, and rights are reserved.
  • If you found the pictures somewhere other than online, it is even less likely that they are free-licensed or in the public domain.

Delete two files

Thank You...Roberto221 (talk) 10:09, 11 March 2023 (UTC)

@Roberto221: These should be made as SVG, but are you sure that there isn't a copyright on these? Yann (talk) 11:40, 11 March 2023 (UTC)
@Yann: if Roberto is being accurate in saying he made these himself, then there is no copyright issue: the blazon can be copyrighted, but not a particular rendering of the blazon. And, yes, SVG would be better, but it doesn't mean JPG or PNG is unwelcome.
@Roberto221: if, on the other hand, these renderings are not your own work, they should be deleted and not reuploaded.
But back to your original question: for Commons' purposes, JPEGs are actually more useful than PNGs, because our rendering software does a better job of scaling them to whatever size they may be used in an article. If there are PNGs that look "cleaner", though (I say this because these renderings aren't particularly sharp), it would be good to upload those as well. And for both JPEGs and PNGs, we usually want the highest resolution available. Assuming these are your own work, what you uploaded is very low-resolution.
If you still want these deleted, they've been up less than a week and are not being used in any article, so you are within your rights to have the deleted. Just put {{subst:My bad upload}} on the respective file pages, and someone will delete them. - Jmabel ! talk 17:37, 11 March 2023 (UTC)
For pictures, JPEG is better, but for drawings like these PNG is better. Yann (talk) 17:39, 11 March 2023 (UTC)

No, you cannot. Ruslik (talk) 20:19, 11 March 2023 (UTC)
@Upiintheaiir: The long answer: That depends on the city. Assuming that the graffiti artist hasn't explicitly provided a free license for their work and hasn't been dead long enough for the work to be released into the public domain (see Commons:Licensing policy and Commons:Derivative works), you can only upload graffiti from places where photographs of public artworks can be used freely (see Commons:Freedom of panorama). Copyright help regarding File:Medicon Village.jpg

Hi, this media is a a free non copyright photo, provided from https://www.mediconvillage.se/downloadable-resources/ If needed, how do the company provide you with the free to use information? --MarcusRLindblom (talk) 20:25, 11 March 2023 (UTC)

@MarcusRLindblom: the image may be in some way free to use, but it is certainly not "non copyright". I have no idea where you got the idea that there is no copyright for this photo. When you allow people to use your copyrighted material, you don't lose the copyright.
The source page https://www.mediconvillage.se/downloadable-resources/ does say "free to use," so you have a good chance of sorting this out with them, but unfortunately we need something more specific than that for Commons. In particular, we need an explicit indication that commercial use and derivative works are OK. There are several ways this requirement could be met:
  • On the source page on their site, they could add the phrase "including commercial use and derivative works" after "free to use".
  • On the source page on their site, they could add a specific license that meets those requirements, e.g. {{Cc-by-3.0}} or {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}.
  • They could go through the process described at COM:VRT to send us an email granting a specific license that meets those requirements, e.g. {{Cc-by-3.0}} or {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}.

Are website screenshots allowed to be uploaded?

There is a page on Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Langmaker) that I figured could use a screenshot to help out the article a bit. I have a screenshot, and I've seen other pages upload screenshots (hell, Infobox website has its image field called "screenshot"). However, the upload wizard says that uploads of screenshots of software cannot be accepted without permission from the creators of it. I have two questions here, those being: 1. Are websites considered software in this case, and if so: 2. Does the fact that the website has been defunct for over a decade change if the screenshot is allowed to be uploaded? AlexChillOut (talk) 23:51, 11 March 2023 (UTC)

@AlexChillOut: It doesn't matter whether websites are considered software. It is vary rare when a website would not be copyrighted; about the only cases I can think of are some U.S. federal government sites, or sites that consist of material over a century old with almost no additional annotation.
The fact that the website has been defunct for over a decade is particularly inconvenient, because it probably makes it impossible (or at least extremely challenging) to contact the party who owns the copyright and get a free license from them. - Jmabel ! talk 02:21, 12 March 2023 (UTC)
I see, thanks for letting me know :) AlexChillOut (talk) 02:45, 12 March 2023 (UTC)
You could archive the website at archive.org and archive.today. if it is ten years old, it could be gone every moment. If it is helpful even if 10 years old, it should be archived. C.Suthorn (talk) 08:10, 12 March 2023 (UTC)

Can I upload a photo of a famous person that I did not take and don't know who did, even though I'm authorized to use it by the photo subject?

The rules on uploading are quite fuzzy to me. I have this photo that my company tasked me with adding it to CEO's Wikipedia page. How do I go about doing so if I don't know who took the original photo? The photo 100% belongs to the company and the subject (CEO) has authorized its use. I'm a novice and this is a new account so my first time editing on Wikipedia and this was tasked to me by the CEO. Any help is much appreciated. Lshmais (talk) 09:01, 12 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi Lshmais. Generally, the person taking a photo is considered to be the copyright holder of the photo; in some cases, however, the photo might be a work for hire or the photographer might have otherwise transferred their copyright to someone else. Just based on what little information you posted above, it sounds like this photo shouldn't be uploaded to Commons unless the copyright holder can be determined and their consent can be verified in some formal way. Usually, this is done as explained here.
Finally, if you've been tasked by someone to make edits to English Wikipedia on behalf of the CEO or the company they represent, then you probably should take a careful look at this and this because you will need to comply with them if you're planning to edit or create content about the CEO on English Wikipedia. -- Marchjuly (talk) 09:41, 12 March 2023 (UTC)

non free work question?

Hello, I would like to upload a correct version of my city flag, Elkhart Indiana. The flag design itself it public domain but the image was created by Masao Okasaki and found on a flag reference website (https://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/us-in-ek.html). Cmcrabtr (talk) 12:18, 12 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi Cmcrabtr. What makes you think the flag is in the public domain? Are you just assuming that the flag must be in the public domain because it's a municipal flag? The term "public domain" has a very specific meaning when it comes to copyright law and something isn't automatically within the "public domain" just because it's "public" in nature. In the United States, works created by US federal government employees as part of their official duties are considered to be within public domain per US federal statues, but works belong to state, county, city or other local governments often aren't depending on the state. Indiana doesn't seem to be one of the states which has statutes on the books stating the works created by official government employees are in the public domain. Moreover, if you look at the City of Elkhart's official website and scroll all the way down to the bottom, you'll see that it says "All rights reserved". This doesn't necessarily mean the flag isn't within the public domain, but the city does seem to be claiming that its intellectual property is its "exclusive property" here. The site where you found the flag just hosts content uploaded by users; it's not the originator of the content and thus it can't claim any copyright ownership over the content. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:50, 12 March 2023 (UTC)

Structural formula in public domain

I would like to request clarification for what is stated in Template:PD-chem- are structural chemical formulas by default ineligible for copyright and thus in the public domain? Could I therefore copy a structural formula drawing (i.e. from here), and upload it to commons, with proper attribution. The example given here is not explicitly in the public domain.

Thank-you, Edward-Woodrow (talk) 19:06, 12 March 2023 (UTC)

@Edward-Woodrow: I can't access the linked page, so I cant judge whether there may be some creative aspect to the drawing. - Jmabel ! talk 19:40, 12 March 2023 (UTC)

[7] should be ok: The photographer is named as Theo(dor) Bauer from Vienna, who died in 1931 (compare [8], also search at [9]), so the photo is in the public domain in Austria. The photo is also from 1927 and was presumably published then, so it is in the public domain in the USA as well. Which means the requirements of Commons:Licensing are met. The painting is still copyrighted (painter died in 1970), and the other photos don't have enough information to determine the copyright status. So best go with the one that is in the public domain. --Rosenzweig τ 00:02, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

Searching for text in image description pages if the text is the name of a template and a user

Trying to search for pages that contain Panoramafreiheit and Bwag does not show any results while there exists at least one. Did I use the search function the wrong way or is there a bug in the search feature ?
(For the reason to search for these keywords see also User talk:Bwag#Panoramafreiheit in German.) -- Juergen 86.111.154.70 17:33, 11 March 2023 (UTC)

  • Seems to me it would be simplest to use VFC on User:Bwag's uploads and just make the relevant substitution. But it would probably be best if Bwag did this themself, since they may have taken photos in more than one country. Also, I believe you need to be logged in to use VFC. - Jmabel ! talk 17:42, 11 March 2023 (UTC)
Yes, he dit it himself.
But I would still want to know why the search feature did not find the relevant pages (before the change). -- Juergen 185.205.125.99 02:31, 13 March 2023 (UTC)
I'm not sure but here is a guess. You were searching for the name of a redirection in the wikitext but not displayed on the page. It would perhaps have been found by specifying a search with the prefix hastemplate. hastemplate:Panoramafreiheit Bwag. Or with the prefix insource. insource:Panoramafreiheit Bwag. You can't test it anymore with Bwag's files since they have removed that redirection from their files, but you could test it with the files of some other user whose files include that redirection. For details, you can see also this help page on Mediawiki. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:42, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

- Jmabel ! talk

YouTube and copyright

Anatoliy Mirovich (talk) 01:05, 10 March 2023 (UTC)

I assume that this is about File:Syuch E.V.jpg and File:Syuch Evgeniy Vasilevich.jpg. Unless I very much misunderstand what is written here in Russian, the claim of own work is unlikely, the dates are certainly wrong, the pictures are new enough to be still in copyright, and the issue is going to come down to whether Anatoliy Mirovich is heir to the relevant copyrights (or knows who is) and can license them. But I can't possibly explain that in Russian. Could a Russian-speaker please help out here? Thanks. - Jmabel ! talk 03:45, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
Hi, I appreciate your response. I received a warning that these two files File:Syuch E.V.jpg and File:Syuch Evgeniy Vasilevich.jpg might be removed from Wikimedia. Apparently there is an issue with those two pictures of my father. I took these pictures of him in early 60s, they were in my family album. Then when I created a Wikipedia page, my daughter helped me to upload them into Wikimedia. I want to make sure everything is done properly and the images will be saved. Please if you can direct me step by step what I have to do, I would appreciate it. Thanks Anatoliy Mirovich (talk) 04:52, 14 March 2023 (UTC)
@Anatoliy Mirovich: at this point, the simplest way to do this would be to go through the process laid out at COM:VRT. Also, especially for File:Syuch E.V.jpg: if you are in possession of the original photos, please scan them at a higher resolution. I'm sure part of why this was seen as suspicious was the extremely low resolution. Typically when we see this, it means someone just grabbed the picture off of the Internet and is falsely claiming "own work". - Jmabel ! talk 15:25, 14 March 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabe: Hi, these pictures are pretty old (about 60 years) and not in a good condition. I made every effort to get the best scan of them. It have passed 5 years from that time when the Wiki page was created. And it was dedicated to the 90th anniversary of my father and at the same time my hammer throw coach. He would have turned 95 this year. But unfortunately he has not been with us for 30 years. Syuch E.V.was not just a great coach and teacher, but an awakener. He gathered young talented people from different parts of a huge country and made them not just a team but one family in which everyone's ready to devote his whole life to sports. It seems to us, all his students, that such a person is worthy to be known and remembered. Sorry for the long story. I hope and I believe we will fix the issue. Thank you for your time and help. Anatoliy Mirovich (talk) 03:59, 15 March 2023 (UTC)
@Anatoliy Mirovich: OK, but I would guess that the people at VRT will wonder why, if you have the original, you cannot scan it at a higher resolution than that. In any case, you need to go the VRT route. - Jmabel ! talk 04:31, 15 March 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabe: Thanks for the prompt response. I will try to scan the pictures again. What I have to do after - to reupload new photos, to remove the old ones? And what is VRT route? Anatoliy Mirovich (talk) 04:41, 15 March 2023 (UTC)
@Anatoliy Mirovich: Near the bottom of the file should be an "upload new versions" link. Use that to upload the new version. But definitely please proceed with VRT, and mention the file names. If you don't move on that front, the current images are likely to be deleted. - Jmabel ! talk 15:48, 15 March 2023 (UTC)
Ah, now I see that they already have been deleted. Proceed with VRT, but it may get more complicated because you didn't do that before the images were deleted. - Jmabel ! talk 15:49, 15 March 2023 (UTC)

Removing an old logo from Wiki commons

My company has updated its logo and I am recommending that the old version in Wiki Commons be removed as it is no longer accurate. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Auticon_logo.jpg

What is the best approach to remove this logo? Dreevewiki2016 (talk) 23:08, 14 March 2023 (UTC)

  • @Dreevewiki2016: You can't. History is history. If it is an accurate representation of your company's former logo, then it still belongs here. You can add the new one (assuming that it is either simple enough to be exempt from copyright, or the company is willing to free-license it in copyright terms while retaining trademark), and you can then use the new one in (for example) Wikipedia, but you cannot remove the old one. - Jmabel ! talk 04:33, 15 March 2023 (UTC)

elduendesuarez has limited himself to altruistically sharing some of his original works with the entire Wikimedia Commons community for a decade; both his photographs, illustrations, as well as original musical compositions and unique experimental music pieces (some inspired by classical pieces in the Public Domain, using artistic creation techniques based on the reinterpretation and variation of fragments with another message or artistic sense, or through techniques of varied sound exploration... etc), as well as performances of piano pieces of the classics of all time, as a work of pedagogical dissemination of music history. The rest of the author's original work, his songs and other discography of more than 30 years of career, cannot be obtained under a W.Commons license since they are part of official catalogs of publishers, labels and authors' societies. • @Squasha4416: unfortunately, no. Copyright would belong to the photographer (or their heirs) and if you don't know who that would be, you have no way to ask them to grant a license. - Jmabel ! talk 15:07, 16 March 2023 (UTC)
Got it, thanks. If I figure out who took the photo, but they have since passed away (which is a distinct possibility), is the photo still not usable? Squasha4416 (talk) 15:22, 16 March 2023 (UTC)
I have a feeling you will tell me I need permission from their heirs. What does that process look like? Do I need some sort of letter? Does the caption have to be something specific? And what is the copyright selection in that case? Squasha4416 (talk) 15:23, 16 March 2023 (UTC)
    • Theoretically the heir can take an account and do the upload themself using a license like {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}, but when they have no other contributions those are a little hard to trust, so probably the best bet is for them to go through the COM:VRT process. Or, if they have a publicly viewable web presence that is clearly them, they can post the image to that site or page and indicate the relevant license there; you can then cite it as a source. Examples of this last would be (1) their own web site, (2) a public post on their Facebook account, (3) a Flickr account that is clearly them. - Jmabel ! talk 15:59, 16 March 2023 (UTC)

Image Poster Copyright

The image is supplied by venom media and is allowed to be on here, the wrong license was selected Journeditzsk1001 (talk) 03:21, 17 March 2023 (UTC)

@Journeditzsk1001: Hi, and welcome. Assuming this is about File:Outlast.png, how did you get a free license for that movie poster from Venom Media or Nathan Owens? Please have the copyright holder send permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 02:02, 18 March 2023 (UTC)

Mistake in categories

Hello, I don't know how to go about it, but it is necessary to change the following category and its sub-categories: Category:Ferdinand II of Aragon (Main altarpiece of the Cartuja de Miraflores). The king depicted is not Ferdinand II of Aragon; it is Juan II of Castile. This is explained in this website (near the bottom of the page), also in this journal, p. 127, also here, figure 41, pp. 59-60. Many thanks, Maragm (talk) 16:47, 24 March 2023 (UTC)

Sorry, the Category:Isabella of Castile (Main altarpiece of the Cartuja de Miraflores) is also wrong, which, as can be seen in the attached bibliographical references, is not about Isabel II of Castile, but about Queen Isabel of Portugal (her mother). Thank you so much! 89.7.243.95 17:03, 24 March 2023 (UTC)

What Upload Tool (Upload Wizard?), what file size? Do the failed uploads show in the Uplaod stash? My uploads do work without error. C.Suthorn (talk) 13:09, 19 March 2023 (UTC)
I use the Classic Upload Form, because I'm comfortable with wikitext and many of my photos are of museum objects for which I copy and paste a lot of reptetitive information, including institution templates, accession numbers, dimensions, references, double permissions for object vs. photo, etc. The file I've been trying to upload is a 5.6 mb jpeg, and it doesn't appear on my upload list after the error message. Choliamb (talk) 13:29, 19 March 2023 (UTC)
I just tried a couple of other photos to make sure it wasn't something funky about the image file itself. But still no luck. Choliamb (talk) 13:34, 19 March 2023 (UTC)
And I tried with the Upload Wizard as well, just to see if that made a difference. It didn't. Choliamb (talk) 14:09, 19 March 2023 (UTC)
I've found and solved the problem. It was at my end, and it wasn't specific to the Commons; it was just more noticeable here than anywhere else because it seriously compromised my upload speeds, and this was the only site where I was trying to upload files of any size. Cheers, Choliamb (talk) 23:35, 19 March 2023 (UTC)

Geoff Lord

Hi I'm trying to upload Geoff Lord's image via the Wikimedia Commons upload Wizard and it's saying that it's a duplicate. The original image was not accepted so I'm unsure how to delete the original image so the one I am trying to upload is no longer a duplicate? Fairlight6 (talk) 02:29, 21 March 2023 (UTC)

@Fairlight6: Not sure what you mean by "not accepted". You might want to expand on that.
You seem to have successfully uploaded File:Geoff Lord.jpg almost a week ago. Is this a different image?
File:Geoff Lord.jpg will probably be deleted soon if you don't provide appropriate licensing information. If it is truly your own work as you stated, all you need to do additionally is offer an appropriate license (and preferably add categories). Please do so! I recommend {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}}.
Please do not upload a duplicate of File:Geoff Lord.jpg. If it gets deleted before you get around to clarifying license, go through the Commons:Undeletion requests process. If you are trying to upload a different photo, do make sure it is properly licensed. Also if you are trying to upload a different photo, usually most warnings about duplicates (1) link to the duplicate file and (2) allow an "upload anyway" choice. Did that not happen? If not what upload method are you using (cross-wiki from Wikipedia, Commons upload wizard, etc.)? - Jmabel ! talk 04:40, 21 March 2023 (UTC)

Good morning

Good morning, there is a person named Faisal, without any reasons, who showed the pictures of my work and my frying pans, and they do not have copyrights. What is the reason that he puts them in the deletion record? What is the reason why he does What is the reason that he does not put them in the deletion record? What is the reason and why does he do this? Please respond and benefit, and a note on Wiki Commons for all contributors, not for a specific person, as he works hard in people. Jimmy Yelzer (talk) 06:54, 21 March 2023 (UTC)

Good afternoon. I understand that English is probably not your native language (it's not mine either). However, I still struggle with understanding your issue. Perhaps try to write in your native language, we can at least use Google Translate or another AI based translation tool. It's not perfect, but it may still yield a better result. Please do not take this as an insult, I appreciate you're trying to communicate in English, as majority of people here speak English. But it obviously doesn't really work in this case. That also applies to the short message of yours down below. As far as I understand it, you have issues with someone who used your copyrighted work without your permission? For that, we have an official policy. Obviously one cannot simply claim copyright, they have to proof it and they have to provide a valid reason for deletion. See COM:L for more informations about licensing on Commons. Polda18 D C 11:21, 21 March 2023 (UTC)
@Polda18: it looks like Faisal has nominated a bunch of User:Jimmy Yelzer's uploads for deletion as "out of scope" with no further explanation. I wouldn't be surprised if some of these uploads have copyright issues, and they certainly have meaningless categories (and dubious descriptions), but having looked at a few of them it seems likely that if they don't have copyright problems and if they were to be well described, they'd be in scope. I'm about to head out the door right now, but someone may want to look into this further. - Jmabel ! talk 15:00, 21 March 2023 (UTC)
That's interesting. Without an insight, I can't figure this out. However, now that you menton that, it seems like the reason behind the nomination may be language barrier, as poor categorization and description, and the way Jimmy talks, may suggest some kind of language barrier preventing them from explaining their ideas properly. Issue with replacing SVG image

Hello, a while ago I've uploaded this line-up, but recently a user pointed out a mistake in the line-up (Ferrari should be replaced with Ferraris). So, I've downloaded the file, edited it accordingly, and uploaded it back again as a new version of the same file. However, as you can see from the file history, the new file that I've uploaded appears exactly the same as the original file (with Ferrari in the line-up). So, I went back to check the file, making sure to have Ferraris in the line-up, but now I can no longer upload it (neither as a new version of the same file, nor as a new file) because the system warns me that the file I am trying to upload is exactly the same as the current file at File:ITA-ESP 1934-06-01.svg. Lego sets

I have lego sets that I own and built. Is it OK for me to take pictures of them and upload to Commons? Marques.jpf (talk) 13:31, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

If you built them according to the attached blueprint, then the design is Lego's, not yours. If the sets are very old, then the orignal copyright may have expired. If you built your own designs (with reasonable complexity), then the design of the the Lego bricks is de minimis and you can upload your photos. There may be other parts of the legal code that allow your uploading and licensing your photos, depending on what jurisdictions this is about and on the sets themselves. –LPfi (talk) 15:21, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

  • @PalauanReich: Are you saying File:Gnaa logo.svg was never correct, or that it has been changed?
  • We're just as interested here in historical logos as current ones, so a new logo doesn't exactly "supersede" an old one, but if a logo is outdated, that fact should be added to its description; you can even add a link to the later logo there.
  • If there is a Wikipedia article that should have the current logo, edit Wikipedia accordingly. - Jmabel ! talk 01:38, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

Upload Corrected File with Attribution

Question: How can we upload the correct logo file with attribution to me (and my studio) as the agency of record for this design?

Context: Wiki user FLAGVISIONER uploaded a City of Miami logo. This is a project I worked with the City of Miami (reference 1, reference 2, reference 3) that we will publish via press release publicly within a few weeks with attribution to my design studio and myself as design lead. You can see my original upload with date-stamp in 2020. Wondering how we can upload the correct SVG version (user FLAGVISIONER simply vectorized it from a JPG and it looks damaged, I have the original files ready) I own the rights to this design work as it was registered under my company name and transferring ownership to the City as the client. and how I can get attribution as the designer on record, will I need some kind of page? Acevvvedo (talk) 14:56, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

Convenience link: File:Logo of Miami, Florida.svg. - Jmabel ! talk 15:17, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
I see no earlier contributions from you on Wikimedia Commons, and just one file uploaded on Wikipedia in English (a portrait). Where is the "original" 2020 upload?
For the new file, you can either upload it separately, with correct attribution, and mark that file as superseding the Flagvisioner file, or upload yours as a new version of it. I assume uploading by a new name will make the version history and attribution clearer, so I would recommend that path. We can help with the attribution wording and the superseding template after the upload. It would probably help if you used COM:VRT to confirm your role, although that is not strictly needed as the file will be in the public domain through the city (if I understand correctly).
LPfi (talk) 15:39, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for the reply and instructions, Jmabel and I apologize, replying here since I'm not familiar with Wikipedia edits (only made 1 or 2 in a few pages many years ago.) I'm not even too certain how to upload a new one. For clarity, I did NOT upload one in 2020, I was just showing I was the original creator of the seal/logo in 2020. Could you point me in the right direction as to how to upload / edit correctly? On the logo page under EDIT is says "You cannot overwrite this file." I would like to to do it the right way. If I should confirm my role at COM:VRT, I can do that as well, again, not sure how.
--Acevvvedo (talk) 16:04, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
@Acevvvedo: For obvious reasons, new users aren't allowed to upload over existing files. Here's what I'd suggest:
  • Take a look at the page COM:VRT. That will tell you how to get hold of the team that handles confidential correspondence and, in particular, verifying that someone is who they say they are.
  • Write them to let them know the situation: who you are, the evidence that you are who should be credited here, the version of the file that you would like replacing this, and really anything else you want to take up. This may take a little bit of back-and-forth, but probably not too much.
  • They will eventually sort it out and issue a "ticket," a templated message they will place on that page. I'm not sure the extent to which they will make the other edits themselves, because I haven't been through that part of the process and I'm not on the team.
  • Despite what User:LPfi said, I'd suggest that it end up on the same page it is now. The attribution should be explicit, using the "author" property of {{Information}} and the "attribution" property of the license template, so the past history shouldn't be a problem.
  • You might want to wait a day or so, though, and see if anyone has some refinements to that, or if LPfi has a good case why I'm wrong on the point where we disagree. - Jmabel ! talk 16:39, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi according to my knowledge there should not a copyright issue with the provision of the pictures from the archives for the objects (e.g. maps) created several hundred years ago. Nonetheless the picture is reported as such that does violate the licensing for some reason. Can you please help me understand this? The tags where also provided according to the available information (which is incomplete for the objects of such age). Thanks

--Krispe13 (talk) 18:22, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

No copyright tag is provided. Ruslik (talk) 20:09, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
I added {{PD-old-100}}. Can somebody decipher the text in the lower right corner? It could be a signature (in which case the map isn't anonymous and the author can hardly be called unknown without research). There also is no publication history, so we can only guess at the country of origin and date of publication (which would be needed to use PD-1996 or PD-US-expired, respectively). –LPfi (talk) 20:33, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

Expired works published outside of the USA

Hello, I'm trying to upload a map published in the Soviet Union in 1930. As such, its copyright has expired in most countries, but not the USA. The knowledgebase states that:

For works first published before 1964, copyright lasts 28 years after publication, and is therefore currently expired unless the owner filed for renewal during the window between 27 and 28 years after publication.

I have confirmed that the copyright on this work was not extended, and it should therefore be safe to upload to Commons, but the upload wizard does not present any kind of option to do this. How do I correctly upload this work to Wikimedia Commons? Thanks in advance, Akakievich (talk) 22:37, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

Client Photo deletion

I have a client named Adam Sandoval and I am trying to use one of the photos he's taken himself and has allowed me to use, but the photo is under threat of deletion. What should I change on the photo copyright to allow me to use it on his Wikipedia page I'm building him? Jamesnewton.indycollab (talk) 16:31, 24 March 2023 (UTC)

The photo is Adam Sandoval standing in front of motorcycle.jpg Jamesnewton.indycollab (talk) 16:32, 24 March 2023 (UTC)
  • @Jamesnewton.indycollab: I assume you are talking about File:Adam Sandoval and his dog scooter on his motorcycle.jpg. If Mr. Sandoval took that himself, or otherwise has had the copyright transferred to him, he (and no one else) can go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to offer a license to use the photo. If someone else owns the copyright, they'll need to do that instead.
  • An alternative would be for the copyright-holder to first publish the photo on a site clearly under their control and indicate the license there. Then you can cite that as a source and indicate the same license (and, presumably, attribution) here.
  • In either case, please don't claim the photo as your "own work" if it isn't.
  • Also: have you read en:WP:COI? It sounds like you are doing paid editing on the English-language Wikipedia without following the instructions on revealing conflicts of interest. That could easily get you blocked there, and I strongly recommend you attend to it ASAP. - Jmabel ! talk 21:46, 24 March 2023 (UTC)

Revision of a file already uploaded to a commons challenge

How is it possible to upload a revision of a file already uploaded to a commons challenge? I uploaded a digitized photo which in retrospect I found to be unclean at some spots. After these (minor) corrections I want to exchange the former by the new file. As the challenge (laundring) still is in its submission phase, could I just delete the old version and upload the new one? Foeniz (talk) 10:27, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

If you scroll all the way down on the file page, there's a little link labeled “Upload new revision of this file”. Click it and you can then upload cleaned version of the file. Don't forget this is used to upload minor fixes rather than broader edits. Broader edits that have nothing to do with fixing issues with the original file should be uploaded as a new file and marked as a derivative work instead. Polda18 D C 11:04, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
Thank you very muchǃ It worked out fine, but a problem left isː the preview shows the corrected version while the full size at the same page shows the old version. What should I do? Foeniz (talk) 11:44, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
Purge cache, use a different browser, wait a while. The cache is fooled by new uploads this way. Elizium23 (talk) 14:43, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for making a proposal, but, sorry I don't understand the details. Which cache do you talk about? For which part of the revision process would a different browser be of an advantage? (I never had a problem with Firefox). So fare I will just go ahead with waiting, sometimes that did help. Foeniz (talk) 16:36, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
@Foeniz: Hi, and welcome. Please see COM:CACHE.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 17:42, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
Using another browser helps if the old version is in the browser cache, which is not shared between browsers. If it is in the cache of the server (or a proxy, possibly at Wikimedia), the other browser will get the same old copy. The caching of big web sites such as the Wikimedia ones is complicated, so purging does not always succeed as expected. –LPfi (talk) 18:28, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
Hi Jeff G. and Hi LPfi. It did not work out. The file I talk about isː
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Drying_area_of_laundry_business,_Manali,_Himachal_Pradesh,_India,_1989.jpghttps://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Drying_area_of_laundry_business,_Manali,_Himachal_Pradesh,_India,_1989.jpg
I addedː ?actioɲ=purge and after confirming question and answer the file got opened telling it is the new version, which is the case with the preview, but the not with the full screen picture. Which alternative browser would you recommend? Foeniz (talk) 19:04, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

Sorry, above I made a mistake. I doubled the URL (not in my attemps to purge). Correct isː https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Drying_area_of_laundry_business,_Manali,_Himachal_Pradesh,_India,_1989.jpgFoeniz (talk) 19:37, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi Jeff, thank you for taking care. The minor changes were cleaning the file (by using photoshop) from contaminations left from the digitizing prozess. For example removing a hair at the front of the second fence pillar from the right. Foeniz (talk) 11:47, 24 March 2023 (UTC)
That's okay. Small touches like removing stray hair on photograph scan is minor fix, therefore it's okay to upload as new revision of the same file. Polda18 D C 15:45, 24 March 2023 (UTC)
Thank you Polda18. That's good to know. But it does not solve my Problem with the revision being well done for the preview, but the full screen did not get revised if you start it from the URL. Foeniz (talk) 17:26, 24 March 2023 (UTC)

It would also be important to know if this "login code" they refer to is a 2FA TOTP code. Extended content

I'm not very familiar with how category pages work on Commons. One of the bullet points in COM:CAT#Creating a new category states A short description text that explains what should be in the category, if the title is not clear or unambiguous enough on its own. is acceptable, but I'm wondering about a category like Category:Midway Theater, Allentown, Pennsylvania which seems to be an attempt to create a quasi-Wikipedia article on Commons. The content on that category page seems, in my opinion, to go beyond what would be considered a "short-description" and basically seems to be someone's own original research. I don't know about the licensing of all of files populating the category, but most if not all of them seem to be licensed as {{PD-US-no notice}}. The files include newspaper advertisements and newspaper articles about the theater, these all appear to be cut-outs or clippings and there's no way of knowing whether they were covered under the copyright of the entire paper. None of the files seems to be used in any Wikipedia articles, which is another reason why I think the category page was created to be a de-facto article so to speak. My understanding is that print advertisements were required to have separate visible copyright notifications on a per ad basis, but newspaper articles (text and photos) were not required to do so and instead were covered by the copyright notice for the entire newspaper as whole. If my understanding is incorrect, then perhaps the files are OK as licensed; however, I'm not sure about the stub-like article content at the top of the page and hoping others can clarify whether it's OK for Commons. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:50, 5 February 2023 (UTC)

Putting aside the whole copyright question and whatnot, I'll usually either shorten long descriptions to a few sentences or just delete it whole cloth depending on if it's clearly OR or not since this isn't Wikipedia. Especially if the information is only tangentially related to the category. That said, I don't think it necessarily hurts to have a basic description if it helps people understand better what the images are about. Even in cases where it's not referenced (at least if it's uncontroversial). Like if it's a category for a historic building that burned down and was rebuilt several times, cool. Have a short description about it since the information provides context for the images. Three huge paragraphs going into mostly pointless historical minutia is clearly overkill though. There's no reason that stuff can't just be added to Wikidata or the descriptions for the individual files. --Adamant1 (talk) 03:04, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
The description is a bit much; if it were sourced, I'd suggest turning it into a Wikipedia article, but without that, we can't. @Atwngirl: this is basically your work. I assume you had sources. Could you consider adding appropriate citation and moving the bulk of this to en-wiki? I assume some of this can be cited from exactly the newspaper stories that are among the uploaded clippings.
Also, Atwngirl: the uploads are at least mostly yours (I didn't go through them all). U.S. newspaper content from 1936 can very well still be copyrighted until 2031 (etc. for later dates). The ads are probably good, lacking copyright notices of their own, but of course clippings of individual articles don't have "copyright markings". There is usually a single copyright notice for an entire daily newspaper. Certainly the newspaper would have been copyrighted. We'd need a specific reason to believe that copyright was not renewed. Do you have a basis for that? You appear to know what newspaper they were from. If you need some assistance if figuring that out (I'd like to keep these if we can), you can probably get that at Commons:Village pump/Copyright, but please in the future sort out that sort of thing before uploading. You presumably don't want to go through this amount of effort just to have your work deleted as copyright violations. - Jmabel ! talk 04:39, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
  • The paper is The Morning Call of Allentown, Pennsylvania, which did not renew any copyrights. I think the history is good, since we do not have an article. It provides search terms for someone looking for images. If it was on Wikipedia, we would just need the lede, the first few sentences, from a Wikipedia article. --RAN (talk) 06:04, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
Personally I'd be all for it if the length was chopped down to one reasonably sized paragraph like in Jmabel's example. It's way to long as it is though. People shouldn't have to scroll through almost half a page before they get to the actual images. --Adamant1 (talk) 06:53, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
@Atwngirl has been around a long time and more or less single-mindedly has been contributing memorabilia related to Allentown, PA. She is either an enthusiastic private historian of the town, or more likely has some official connection to a historical society, library, or museum in that town with privileged access to many of these items. I have not seen any declaration to that effect, but it would be nice to know the background here, because considering the extensive history of that one building in question, there may be much more where that came from. Elizium23 (talk) 08:01, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
This is interesting to me because many of the photos of the South West Sydney that I’m taking are significant for their area, but may not be significant enough to entail an article in Wikipedia. However, I have found quite a lot of information on the subject of the photo. I would like to add detailed information, but I’m wondering if I might need to create a seperate resource off-wiki using a CC license as this sort of data won’t be allowed here?
I’d love some clarification in this. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 15:40, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
@Chris.sherlock2: I wonder if Wikispore could be useful for this sort of project? I certainly think that more small wikis would be a good thing! :-) (I've got an idea for a local wiki at https://freo.wiki ). — Sam Wilson ( TalkContribs ) … 09:19, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
I wonder if a local history spore might be worthwhile? Lots of local history just cannot get onto en.wiki, but is still very important. It would still need to ensure that NOR and citations are used, but it would be pretty interesting! I know many local historians would likely love it. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 13:29, 7 February 2023 (UTC)

Just as an example of what I think is entirely within reason for a category about a building: Category:1012 First Avenue, Seattle. A lot of what is here is name changes, when stories were added, what was in the building, when the facade changed, all of which are likely to be useful in categorizing photos, including whether they refer to this building. guess we could have a proper en-wiki for this building, because it has Seattle Landmark status (so we'd have the notability), but what is here would still be pretty stubby for Wikipedia, and it doesn't seem likely that a non-stub about this will be written, at least in the foreseeable future. - Jmabel ! talk 04:48, 5 February 2023 (UTC)

I appreciate all of the responses my OP has received so far. Category:Melody Circle, Allentown, Pennsylvania is a similar page to the one about the Midway Theater that was also created by the same user. Again, a few sentences or even a short paragraph would seem to be OK as an introduction to the images found on the page, but these two category pages (there might be more) do, at least in my opinion, go beyond that and seem to be more of an attempt to create an English Wikipedia article about these buildings on Commons, without necessarily having to deal with all of the policies and guidelines of English Wikipedia. If the content can be reliably sourced per en:WP:NOR or if the buildings are English Wikipedia notable in their own right per en:WP:NBUILDING, then there's probably a way to incorporate all or some of this content into a newly created or already existing English Wikipedia articles. I'm not sure, however, it's such a great idea to allow it on Commons just because no such articles about these buildings may currently exist. I don't think Commons was ever intended to be a en:WP:ALTERNATIVEOUTLET for English Wikipedia as a place for others to what might be considered their own "original research". If these category pages are the result of efforts on behalf of a local historical society or similar group, then perhaps the content would be best hosted on said group's own website or own wiki-site than Commons if it's not appropriate for English Wikipedia. — Marchjuly (talk) 15:42, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
I mean, at the very least it's not in a discoverable place. Who among us, seeking encyclopedic information on an item, visits its category page on Commons? Furthermore, the polyglot nature of Commons militates against it becoming an alternate enwiki repository of this stuff. Elizium23 (talk) 15:53, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
I don't necessarily disagree with any of that, but at the same time this does seem to be sort of related to COM:PS#Excluded educational content, at least it seems that way to me. Would similar text content be allowed, for example, on a Commons user page per COM:PSP? I get that Commons isn't English Wikipedia and thus the latter's policies and guidelines don't apply per COM:NOTWP; however, it doesn't seem as if Commons should be the place for posting or hosting an individual's or group's original research per COM:NOT#Wikimedia Commons is not an encyclopedia, dictionary, guide, or book. — Marchjuly (talk) 17:42, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
I'd put the information in Category:Cinemas in Allentown, Pennsylvania in the same category. It's useful and interesting sure, but still better served by cited somewhere else. For instance Wikidata. I'm not sure most of those cinemas would qualify for individual Wikipedia articles, but that's the kicks sometimes. That said, I'm pretty sure the bar for inclusion is a lot lower for articles about geographical locations then other subjects. So I don't see why it couldn't be included in [15]. It looks like there's already a lot of overly detailed, unreferenced material in the article already. So really what's the difference at this point? There's no reason Atwngirl can't cut the article back and include whatever she wants to there instead of putting it on Commons where no one is going to see it. BTW, it looks like she hasn't even edited the article before and it's been edited thousands of times by a single user in the meantime, which is interesting. Either way, the article could definitely use more people editing it and a more diverse range of information about Allentown. --Adamant1 (talk) 04:48, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
Category:Betzs Restaurant, Category:Allentown Trust Company and Category:Cigar Manufacturing and Marketing in Allentown, Pennsylvania are yet some other examples of this. This user has created more than a thousand new category pages since 2016. Many seem like a typical Commons category page that has mainly files and very little if any textual content. Others start out that way but then textual content is subsequently added to them through "minor" edits until they start looking like articles with image galleries. Whatever the reason for creating them, a pattern has been established and more of these category pages will probably be created in the future. — Marchjuly (talk) 19:13, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
I believe we've indicated enough of a consensus that this stuff is (1) OR and (2) out of scope for Commons, so shall we officially discourage this user from continuing? It's been 3 days since her last edit, so I assume she's on a bit of a break and hasn't had opportunity to notice, or participate in, our discussion here. Elizium23 (talk) 19:16, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
They could just be busy and haven't logged in recently. I've added a {{Please see}} to their user talk page (I should've done that sooner and my apologies for not doing so) to let them know about this discussion. — Marchjuly (talk) 19:30, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
It's been more than a week since Atwngirl was pinged/notified of this discussion, but they still haven't responded. Their last Commons edit was on February 4. It's quite possible they just are busy with other things, but Commons still marches on; so, perhaps it's time to figure out what if anything needs to be done here. Should these category pages just be blanked of text completely? Should only a short paragraph remain? Is only an infobox really needed for those pages that have them? -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:30, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
  • Should these category pages just be blanked of text completely? Certainly not, though it may make sense to edit them down considerably. I think the example I gave above shows about what is appropriate. Also: where there is no equivalent en-wiki content, it would be good to save any content (beyond what is effectively covered by the remaining text or infobox) on the respective talk pages (on Common or, if there is a relevant article, on en-wiki) as potential material to flesh out for en-wiki in the future. - Jmabel ! talk 16:06, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
I'm not so sure that we should take it upon ourselves to preserve much of this at all; if it is unsourced and original research, no Wikipedia project would accept it anyway, certainly not enwiki. If it can't be sourced and doesn't meet WP:V, then it must be removed outright. The WP:ONUS, burden of proof, is on the person adding material, so if Atwngirl is unable to do so within a short time frame here, we should absolutely, completely, remove unsourced material. Elizium23 (talk) 17:15, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
Those are all Wikipedia policies, aren’t they? Do we have commons policies that she is violating? I’m not a fan of citing Wikipedia shortcuts on commons. Commons is not Wikipedia (thank god). - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 20:35, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
Since the text which Atwngirl has contributed would only be appropriate for inclusion on enwiki, that's the only wiki whose policies should be considered when deciding whether to retain or delete this text, right? Commons policies would dictate that we remove it all, completely, immediately; we have no use whatsoever for it here. Elizium23 (talk) 21:21, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
@Elizium23: I disagree, and in fact here is an edit that you recently made along these lines (unrelated to User:Atwngirl) that I think is dead wrong. The person whose material you removed, User:Publichall, has consistently shown themself to be very knowledgable on Seattle architectural history, and while I wish they had provided a citation, the material you removed could be very useful to date specific photos of the building (or simply to identify them as this building) and/or to help someone find this building in a search for any of several businesses that were based there. Removing information about architects seems particularly odd: Commons routinely indicates information about architects of buildings, and almost no one her provides a citation when (for example) adding an architect category as a parent category for a building category. - Jmabel ! talk 23:57, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I think sourcing and verifiability here on Commons is more than a little bit bonkers, considering what people can get away with in terms of depicting things in images that they would never, never in a million years be able to write in prose on any Wikipedia project without a reliable source. But, you do you, I guess. Elizium23 (talk) 00:05, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
I think having at least one paragraph helps cover subjects that might never meet the main wiki's notability requirements but I'll admit to getting a bit long winded for some, since the coverage of these subjects on the wiki is so severely lacking, I'm trying to link as many of these photographs together as possible for future researchers to benefit from. In most cases here it seems that linking to a Wikipedia article is the only form of citation, so it gets messy when there is nothing in the Wiki to even reference, especially when trying to justify parent categories. I'm currently putting together a full article for the building in Jmabel's linked category, and when I get around to publishing it and making a wikidata entry for it, the description can be be chopped down as needed. In the meantime It's more or less a memo for further research. Publichall (talk) 06:10, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
I'd suggest that when removing material that is uncited but plausible, it's best to move it to the talk page. Very few people will ever find it in the history. Similarly, the talk page may often be a better place to put "a memo for further research" in the first place. (Statements about living or recently dead people are, of course, a different matter: anything the least bit controversial should be well-sourced.) - Jmabel ! talk 16:30, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
@Atwngirl She can start a Fandom wiki called Allentown, Pennsylvania and link to it from Wikidata, even if she starts an English Wikipedia article on a topic, it can be backed up at Fandom, in which she would have admin rights. We can also enclose the category text in a box and have it closed by default, so it doesn't push down the images, but it would still have the text available to provide keywords. --RAN (talk) 00:08, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
That may make sense. Having dealt with Atwngirl before, I doubt we will get much of a response and a lot of the edits will be steathily reverted a few months from now under the excuse that it wasn't perfectly done. I spent months and months breaking Category:Newspaper advertising in Allentown, Pennsylvania all from crazy decade categories into Category:The Morning Call (Allentown, PA) by year but they all got reverted back without any discussion and are stored in the decades structure which has thousands of images at a time. It is clear someone wants to create their own universe of articles and stories and categories but very few of these things are going to be used because they are organized in overly broad categories and someone will fight to keep them that way. If someone does clean up the category descriptions, have the pages kept on your watchlist. You will go nuts. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 09:20, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
If Atwngirl is too busy with real world stuff at the moment to respond, then I don't believe there's any need to wait any longer to try and resolve this. If at some later date, Atwngirl disagrees with whatever turns out to be the consensus here, they can ask for clarification at that time. Whatever text content is removed from the category pages will still be in the page history if Atwgirl wants to retrieve it at some later date to use somewhere else. I'm not sure that storing the content on the category talk pages is really a good thing; however, if that's the consensus, then so be it. Finally, Atwngirl has been a pretty prolific uploader over the years, but many of their uploads have ended up deleted via DR or some other reason. Going through all those that remain and assessing their licensing is probably going to take a fair amount of time as well. Perhaps in the process of doing that, the category pages can be cleaned up a bit too. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:21, 22 February 2023 (UTC)
Have we come to any firm conclusions as to what to do though? The material doesn’t appear to be causing any harm. Why would we remove it? - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 09:05, 25 February 2023 (UTC)
There's probably lots of things uploaded to Commons that don't appear to be causing any harm depending upon how one defines the word "harm". Will the continued hosting of this content be the straw that breaks the back of Commons? Almost certainly not. The question is whether this content fits within the purpose of a Commons category page, isn't it? COM:NOTWP states that Commons isn't a local Wikipedia in the sense that local Wikipedia policies and guidelines need not be applied; however, implied in that "Commons is not Wikipedia" thinking is that Commons is also not a free web host where one should be able to post whatever they please per COM:SCOPE#Wikimedia Commons is not an encyclopedia, dictionary, guide, or book and COM:HOST. A pattern seems to have been established by Atwngirl to create extensively detailed category pages that appear to be pseudo-articles. Perhaps, they have a reason for doing this, but they should explain how they believe these pages comply with SCOPE. If nothing is done and the categories are simply left as is, then similar category pages probably will be created at some point in the future, which means potentially more things to clean up. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:56, 25 February 2023 (UTC)
I don’t necessarily disagree with your concerns, but it doesn’t seem like similar categories are being created. I do think your concern is valid, but in this situation perhaps it might be better to actually wait to see if problems occur. One thing that might be helpful is if we drafted an actual guidance page for category descriptions - unless I’m very much mistaken we don’t have any real documentation that goes into real depth in this. I know that for heritage-listed properties of New South Wales I include a copy of the CC-BY-4.0 descriptions provided by the NSW State Heritage office and these are quite detailed.
I would love to see a guidance page and I’d be happy to discuss it, start one (or update an existing one!) as a draft and we nut this out formally. It would give a lot more certainty to everyone and reduce argument and division. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 01:06, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
I think this is already a problem. There are a number of category pages like this one which have already been created by this user. Many were created years ago and the gradually expanded over time; for example, Category:Hippodrome Theater, Allentown, Pennsylvania. There’s seems to be no need to wait see what they might do next because it's already quite clear what they've been doing; in other words, a pattern has already been established. It's not only creating category pages, but also file uploads that this user has been quite prolific at doing. Many of the files uploaded aren't being used by any projects. Some of these may potentially have educational value, but many seem as if they were uploaded for personal storage purposes more than anything else. Many have also been already deleted or are currently nominated for deletion due to questionable licensing. In addition, this user doesn't seem to be very active on English Wikipedia. If they were uploading files and immediately adding them to articles, then that would one thing. That, however, doesn't seem to be why they are uploading most of these files or creating most of these category pages. — Marchjuly (talk) 02:14, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
Copyright issues are, of course, a problem and need to be dealt with, but if someone is uploading content that would be useful for a local historian, that's fine. It doesn't have to be useful to a WMF project. I've uploaded (or in some cases just curated) a ton of images about Seattle that are probably of limited interest to anyone not from here, but have already proved really useful to local historians, especially architectural historians. I was actually given an award by the local chapter of Docomomo mainly because of how many of my photos were showing up in landmark applications, especially when they were looking for images of comparable buildings. I hadn't even been aware of it until they approached me. I'm sure that very few of those images ever made it into Wikipedia. - Jmabel ! talk 06:40, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
I understand this and have no problem with this when it comes to files. I guess the point I was trying to make is that if Atwngirl was incorporating their uploads into Wikipedia articles or creating Wikipedia articles, then perhaps the very detailed content added to the category pages would also be something eventually intended for Wikipedia. That doesn't seem to be the case though, at least not to me. It probably doesn't matter for files as long as their licensing is OK, but it seems wrong and outside SCOPE (at least in my opinion) for extensive text content that's pretty much unsourced and written in Commons' voice. Since September 2016, it looks like Atwngirl has created somewhere between 1000 and 1500 category pages. Some like Category:Wert's Cafe, Allentown, Pennsylvania, Category:937 Hamilton Building, Allentown, Pennsylvania and Category:Pennsylvania Power and Light Building seem OK, but others like Category:Crocodile Rock, Allentown, Pennsylvania, Category:YMCA of Allentown, Pennsylvania, Category:Ralston's Flowers, Allentown, Pennsylvania and Category:Fountain Park Pool, Allentown, Pennsylvania seem like pseudo-Wikipedia articles based on someone's original research. If the consensus is that types are category pages are OK for Commons, then that's good enough for me and nothing further needs to be done. On the other hand, if they're not really OK, then that's a lot of category pages to go through and check; so, it would probably be a good idea to at least advise Atwngirl not to create any more such pages until those already created can be assessed. -- Marchjuly (talk) 09:02, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
That's awesome Jmabel! Well done, a reward well deserved :-) Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 10:55, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
Whether the files are or are not used by Wikipedia should not have any baring at all on whether they are valid. I am personally unable to use my CC images on Wikipedia, but I don't see why I shouldn't upload them. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 10:54, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
I've already clarified my first post about files not being used by any local Wikipedias, but once again I have no problem with files being hosted by Commons as long as they satisfy COM:HOST and COM:PCP; so, if you upload your work to Commons and it meets HOST, then fine; if not, maybe it should be deleted since Commons isn't intended to be someone's personal photo album per se. The issue with the category pages is the extensively detailed text that some of them contain. Files with questionable licensing or SCOPE issues can be dealt with as such files are usually dealt with. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:38, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, just wanted to clarify :-) - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 11:59, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
  • if the pseudo-articles have a lede paragraph, keep the lede, and hide the rest using the hide html code, that way they can be search, but not displayed. --RAN (talk) 02:49, 25 February 2023 (UTC)
  •  Comment I still don't see why a lot of this couldn't be transferred over to Wikidata. A lot of these categories don't have Wikidata entries associated with them anyway and it would be great if they had infoboxes. Plus, Wikidata is perfect for storing local historical facts that probably lack enough references to qualify for Wikipedia articles. Dumping it all on Commons is completely backwards though, and there's zero indication that Atwngirl even tried other options before adding the information to the categories. From what I can tell she isn't even active on Wikidata. That's not on us and it isn't our responsibility to deal with just because she doesn't want to do it.
Although, I'm more then willing to transfer some of it over to Wikidata myself if we can all agree about how to deal with it. There should also be some kind of acknowledgment on Atwngirl's side that she just use Wikidata in the future. I'm not going to take the time to make sure the information is preserved and stored in a more appropriate way if she's just going to continue doing it though. Also, I like @Chris.sherlock2: 's idea of "nutting" this out more formally. It should really be in the guidelines somewhere not to use categories as pseudo Wikipedia articles or Wikidata entries. That said though, I think we can separate the (likely) need for a broader discussion about it from this specific incident and deal with it regardless of if there's nothing formally in the guidelines. Most things on here are informal and we still deal with them.
As a side to that, I don't think moving the information to talk pages is the best way forward either because the information is still available in the edit history and it just passes the problem up one more level in the chain without actually resolving it. There's fundamentally zero difference between a category and a talk page when it comes to what the purpose of the project is, which isn't to be an alternative to Wikipedia. So Category talk pages shouldn't be used as pseudo Wikipedia articles anymore then the categories themselves should be. Which means there's only two options here. Transfer it to Wikidata or delete it. Period. Let's also "nut" it out in the long-term though. But again that doesn't mean we can't deal with this now on it's own merits. The information in the categories is clearly excessive and needs to be cleaned up. --Adamant1 (talk) 14:03, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
I think the commenting out is the best of the ideas I've seen: preserves what is potentially useful (albeit unsourced and in the wrong place), keeps it out of users' collective face. Wikidata might be a good idea, but someone should first check there (wikidata:Wikidata:Project chat) about whether they'd want this given the lack of citeable sources.
@Atwngirl: it would be very helpful if you would participate in this conversation. I'd hate to do something this large to your work without your participation, but by ignoring us you are leaving us very little choice. - Jmabel ! talk 17:34, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
If the consensus is to "hide" content on the category pages, then that's fine as long doing so doesn't create some "new" problem that's going to be sorted out at some point down the road. It should be explained to Atwngirl as to why this was done so as to possibly avoid any wholesale reverting on their part which puts everything back where it was. Some editorial judgement might be needed in some case if the "first paragraph" is insufficient on its own to provide an acceptable description of a particular category. I tend to agree with Adamant1 about moving stuff to the talk page since that seems not too different from hosting on the category page itself. I don't know very much about Wikidata. If the consensus is that Wikidata is a more suitable place to host the content, then that's fine.
I added a {{Please see}} template to Atwngirl's user talk page on February 6 and you (=Jmabel) have just added another one. Atwngirl posted the following in September 2022, I do not post much to commons right now, as I have a newborn to take care of here. The real world affects us all and perhaps they're just too busy to currently devote any of their time or energy to this matter. If the consensus is to wait a bit longer, then so be it; however, this should be resolved in some way at some point.
Maybe while waiting a bit longer to hear from Atwngirl, it would be better to split off into a new discussion to discuss either enhancing what already exists or developing something new to address category pages or pages in general that seem to be pushing the boundary of COM:SCOPE#Wikimedia Commons is not an encyclopedia, dictionary, guide, or book. If the place to do that is here or at COM:VPP, then cool. If it's better to do so at Commons talk:Project scope, then cool too. Since it seems like a big change that could affect lots of existing pages, maybe a COM:RFC would be the best way to discuss such a thing like this. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:00, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
Wikidata might be a good idea, but someone should first check there (wikidata:Wikidata:Project chat) about whether they'd want this given the lack of citeable sources. I can guarantee that most of this can be sourced and fairly easily. Maybe not up the standards of Wikipedia, but Wikidata has a much lower notability bar. Just to pick a random example, Category:Lehigh Valley Trust Company (there's a totally ridiculous and unnecessary amount of detail in the category BTW), it took me literally two seconds to find this source that has their funding date. So there's really no excuse for the information not to be in Wikidata. Let alone for it to be in Commons completely unreferenced. --Adamant1 (talk) 19:59, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
Do you know if we can use the <ref> tags at Commons? I have a number of categories for stuff that wouldn't fit into Wikipedia but is notable enough for Commons. I'd like to be able to reference it like I used to with Wikipedia. The following was written by User:Atwngirl in the archive, and was deleted because archives should not be edited. Reviving it here. - Jmabel ! talk 15:25, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

* I have been in hospital for some time due to an automobile accident and have not had real access to my computer. Not that I was in much of a state to go to Wikipedia, but now I am home and signed on today, seeing all of this.

  • Okay let me explain some things I see are being asked about. I'm from Allentown and have been doing local history since the mid 90s Started as a hobby which I enjoy as I work in a very technical and different world. I started actually posting things like postcards and matchbooks, and became interested in all of these old places. So I started using this as basically a repository for things I've learned about the places.. Over the years I've been doing this as a hobby, and learning and following all of the rules about catagorizing everything. It makes it easier to find things. Also i've added a lot of my own photographs of all of the changes that has gone on in Allentown. Yeah I suppose some of the pages I've written a lot, as I've looked through the Morning Call archives. These aren't the scholorarly research kind of things you find on Wikipedia. but I do use Wikimedia commons to put up images and old ads that are interesting. Basically it's my repository of what i've found and I can share it with the public. I don't interact at all actually with most of the people on wikipedia, and i'm suprised this has been found out of the millions of pages here.
  • I don't do much editing on Wikipedia, just the one catagory of Mayors of Allentown which I have done a lot of research about and that is all documented as it's supposed to be. Also I've written some of the history of Allentown on that page. If I've done 100 edits over the years on wikipedia, that's been a lot. Basically Commons is my filling cabinet of research, and PLEASE don't delete my notes. Or give me time to download the files as there isn't a backup of any of it.. But I do like to share and that's why it's here, for others to enjoy
  • Thank you for letting me contribute to this discussion.

END of copied content. - Jmabel ! talk 15:25, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

  • @Atwngirl: Amazing work! The notes are not deleted, the previous versions are always available when you look at "history". I formatted all your mayor data for Wikidata. See wikidata:Talk:Q99627141. You can migrate the few images that may be under a currently active copyright to a free Flickr account which will hold 500 images. You can always start a second one if you go over 500. You can add the images and your text to Familypedia, I have admin rights there. You can just copy and paste them there in their entirety, it uses the same wiki markup. If your entries get accepted to Wikipedia, you can just cut and paste them to there. Wikidata links directly to Familypedia. Familypedia is a Fandom website, a for-profit wiki started by the same people as Wikipedia. --RAN (talk) 00:56, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
  • @Atwngirl: You have done an amazing job, and I applaud you for your hard work! I think the main issue is that commons doesn’t really have a great mechanism for storing this data. However, that said if you go into the history you can find everything you added. That said, I don’t have an issue with the content, but is there any of it that can be migrated to Wikipedia?
For all of us; I am wondering if we would allow commons Uploader s to make notes in user pages so they can refine more succinct summaries? That would be disruptive for Commons, and would help as a “scratchpad” for compiling information for condensed summaries for categories. Would anyone object to that? It would allow lots of detail in a non-category or main space page that is useful for the editor, in much the same manner that Atwngirl is making notes. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 08:17, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
    • Is there any reason why such a scratchpad needs to be on Commons user page? Can't notes just as easily be kept without doing so on Commons? On English Wikipedia, registered accounts do have one primary sandbox and other user sanboxes can be created in the user namespace. So, if some of this content is eventually intended to be added to Wikipedia at some point, there's no reason why it can't be added to en:User:Atwngirl/sandbox instead of Commons. If it's intended for personal research or just for storage purposes, then it probably would be better off being maintained in some way other than Commons or Wikipedia. I'm not sure Commons has a strict of a policy regarding user pages as English Wikipedia does, and I also don't know whether Commons user account can created sanboxes in their user space, but it seems at the very least a user page shouldn't really be being used as a free web host for content not usually considered appropriate for Commons. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:16, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
Someone like myself is unable to use Wikipedia. Is there any reason why a scratchpad cannot be a commons user page? I have often needed to write extensive notes on places I've been to, it would be very useful as a user page. I can then summarize the material as necessary. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 02:58, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
In general, if someone's account is in good standing on English Wikipedia, then they should be able to use your user sandbox to work on drafts or whatever as long as it complies with the userspace policies and guidelines of English Wikipedia. If they're able to use Commons but unable to use English Wikipedia, then perhaps that's because they're being prevented from doing so for doing things that they probably shouldn't have been doing. FWIW, I'm not passing judgement on anyone specifically, only pointing out that because that option isn't available to one user, it still may be available to others. If you look at en:User:Atwngirl/sandbox, you'll see that is what they have been doing; so, there's no reason why they can't create a new page or new pages in their user space for their text content on Commons; of course, they will need to make sure it complies with en:WP:UP, but it's one possibility. I don't see a user sandbox for my Commons account, and maybe one was never added because nobody thought there was a need for one since Commons is primarily for hosting files. It seems there was an attempt to create a policy/guideline for Commons' user pages at Commons:User pages, but it was rejected. So, that leaves Commons:User-specific galleries, templates and categories#User pages. While it doesn't specifically say you can't user your user page for notes, it does state that it's OK to create a subpage in one's Commons' userspace. Whether that means it's OK for notes or other things kind of depends on how you view COM:SCOPE#Excluded educational content I guess. -- Marchjuly (talk) 03:39, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, I appreciate the considered response :-) For myself, even if I could edit Wikipedia, I would feel incredibly uncomfortable doing so. Not everyone on Commons wants anything to do with the drama of Wikipedia. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 05:16, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
There are also plenty of users who don't want to have anything to do with the drama on Commons, which is one of the reasons for en:Template:Keep local and the third bullet point of en:WP:F8. Even so, if youthey're going to edit on one or the other, then youthey're going to need to comply with the relevant policies and guidelines that are in place. If youthey don't like a policy or guideline for some reason, youthey can try and get it changed, but youthey can't really ignore it once youthey've been informed about it. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:48, 30 March 2023 (UTC); [Note: Marchjuly edited the post to change "you" to "they" to avoid confusion per below. -- 08:18, 30 March 2023 (UTC)]
Just to be clear, are you say I’m ignoring a particular policy? - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 08:02, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
The "you" in my previous post was the "general you", it was not referring specifically to you or anyone else. Since it seems to have caused confusion, I've changed it to "they". -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:18, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
Thanks :-) I genuinely appreciate your input, and I apologise if I have seemed a bit prickly. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 09:39, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
  • As long as the content is OK per COM:SCOPE, then there should be no issues with Commons hosting it. However, as seen from the above comment reposted from Atwngirl's user talk page and also from another comment Atwngirl subsequently posted on their user talk page, I think there are some concerns related to COM:SCOPE#Excluded educational content that might still need to be sorted out. Some of what Atwngirl posted above seems to imply that they're using Commons as a place to keep their personal research, either for future reference or to share with others. It's great that they're into researching Allentown and its history, but Commons is not really a free web host for them to publish their research, and there might be better sites or ways (as suggested above) which they can use instead. These other sites or ways might have less restrictive policies and guidelines than either Wikipedia and Commons, and also might provide Atwngirl with better control over things. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:04, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
I'm trying to understand the harm in keeping notes in userpages in commons, at least as it pertains to preparing summarised description pages. What is the issue with doing so? Is there any harm? - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 02:59, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
You keep asking "What's the harm?" but I'm not sure there's any way to answer such a question other than to say it has to be in accordance with relevant Commons policies and guidelines. There's lots of things that could be done on Commons (and the various local Wikipedias) that probably wouldn't meet the definition of "harm", but they're not allowed because the relevant community has decided not to allow them. COM:SCOPE states that Commons' main purpose is to host files, not someone's quasi-articles based on their own original research; in other words, it's not intended to be a free web host for content that falls outside of its scope. That's why there's something like COM:PARTYPICS for people simply uploading personal photos which may have very minimal if any educational value who see Commons as simply an online photo album to share with their family and friends. There's probably no real harm to that as well, but it's just something that the Commons community has decided shouldn't be allowed. If the consensus that there's no issue with these descriptions per SCOPE, then that's fine. That was, after all, the point of my starting the original VPP discusison about them. -- Marchjuly (talk) 03:14, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
Sure, and it does actually seem to be in scope. The scope being, preparation to write a summary on a category page. That's not outside of the scope of Commons. It's much the same as me preparing a list of sites for me to go to in order to take photos. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 05:14, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
Once again, it seems (at least to me) that you can do all of that preparation stuff outside of Commons, and you will have much more control over things. Perhaps others will leave you alone to do things as you please in your user space and you can then add such descriptions to category pages once you think they're ready. Even then, though, someone might not agree with your final version and it might end up being subsequently and signficantly changed if there's a consensus established in favor of doing so. The wmf:Terms of Use is, after all, the same for Commons as it is for English Wikipedia, and any text you add to Commons can be changed because of the way you license every time you click "Publish changes" as long as it done in accordance with relevant Commons policies and guidelines. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:00, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
The preparation work could be done at home or whatever, but for work that is useful for Commons, you should be allowed to use Commons facilities, regardless of other options. I also think users in good standing should be allowed quite some leeway in using their user namespace also for other personal notes etc. –LPfi (talk) 08:00, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
That’s sort of my point. I think the likelihood of someone deliberately coming along and editing a scratchpad on a user space page in a legitimate manner is fairly low. I mean, it’s frowned upon to exit someone else’s main user page, I’m not sure why anyone would edit the user page if someone else uninvited! - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 08:06, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
Most experienced users, as you say, most likely would leave another user's page alone out of courtesy as long as there were no serious problems that need addressing; however, that doesn't mean such pages can't ever be edited by others. I'm not sure whether Commons has anything similar to en:WP:UP#OWN, but it's important to remember that user pages aren't ours per se in the sense that we own them; we're only sort of borrowing them and they go away as soon as Commons/Wikipedia goes away or we start using them in ways that aren't considered acceptable. In addition, it seems a bit unwise for someone to keep all of their original research on their user page and not keep another record of it outside of Commons as a backup. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:05, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
    That’s a fair comment. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 12:51, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
I could also host all my photos on another site under a CC license. And I could make a list of all the places I’d like to visit on a piece of paper I guess. Why would I though? If I’m editing on commons in a transparent manner, then I’d prefer to do it in commons. I’m not sure I understand the objections to preparing material under user pages. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 08:09, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

If the material discussed is intended to be publicly shared, I don't think user pages are the best venue – that approaches the "free web host" concept that we don't want. To the extent this research is useful for putting the files in context, I think it should be on official pages. Perhaps category subpages could be a working solution? There they wouldn't be in the way of anybody, but easily available (if linked) for anybody who wants to check the details. The user may want to keep the material also elsewhere, as consensus on whether to keep the pages may change.

Whether or not this sets a bad precedent can be discussed: for serious research, such as my impression of Atwngirl's work, I think there is no problem. We might not want personal essays on a lot of categories, but for categories without (good) Wikipedia articles, they may be useful. Such educational content is not strictly in scope (and cannot be consistently curated), but unless severely misleading it supports the goals of Commons in facilitating the use of the files, and should not be deleted just out of principle. Server space is not an issue, as a mediocre photo uses as much space as a thousand pages of text.

Another approach is to use Wikibooks. I suppose each category concerned could be covered in a chapter of a book written over there. However, I don't know what Wikibooks in English regards as their scope. We should not force Atwngirl to move there before we know that this content is indeed welcomed.

Thank you for inviting me to take part in this discussion. Yes, I am aware that commons is an image repository, and Wikipedia is for articles. How what I have shared up here has evolved from collecting postcards, then matchcovers, then Trade Cards (a 19th century form of advertising), and over the years, basically everything I could find from Allentown's history, according to your rules here, old photos, photo's I've taken, I've shared here in commons. Most importantly, I've catagorized everything so I, and others can find things. So it never was a mess of things. And i've added categories and locations, and dates as part of that.

The text began basically because I am a history junkie. And I would look up things in the old newspsper files of the several newspapers that Allentown PA, my hometown, has had over the years. Most are just short blurbs, but yes some are longer and I could go back and turn them into Wikipedia articles. However, most of the category pages really aren't notible. A dry cleaner that started in 1910, was well known in Allentown for 80 years, then went out of buisness is good for local history.. but on Wikipedia.. Someone from Salem Oregon or Berlin, or anywhere out of the local Allentown area really don't know about it, and don't care about it, for example. (Category:Mary MacIntosh Services, Allentown, Pennsylvania)

Anyway I'm a user of commons and yes I contribute to this repository. I am presuming most or all of you are admins. Reading through these comments you're all well-versed and more knowledgeable than I am. However, now that i've drawn your attention with what I've contributed over the years, I would like to request that I can rename and delete categories and images Mostly for misspellings.

Again, thank you for this forum and a chance to contribute. Whatever you decide is fine, as you're admins and that's what you do here. For now, I'm still recovering my health for now and building up my strength so I won't be contributing for a while yet.

Take care Atwngirl (talk) 18:25, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

@Atwngirl: as far as renaming images, please see Commons:File_renaming#How_to_rename_a_file. You could apply for filemover privileges to be able to make the moves yourself rather than have them reviewed, but I suspect that, given your own admitted lack of familiarity with a lot of the policies here, you might not be granted those privileges. Similarly, for categories, if there is an outright misspelling in a category name, that should be an uncontroversial move, and you can request it at User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands - Jmabel ! talk 22:18, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
@Atwngirl: For the topics that are of Wikipedia-level notability, it would be great if you could expand your content into Wikipedia articles. For the rest of this, I do think you should take seriously the suggestion above that if a lot of your purpose here is to organize your own notes on topics of only local notability and to make them available, you might want to consider starting a Fandom wiki about Allentown and migrate some of your content there (or establish any other sort of site). What you are doing seems, on the whole, commendable, but as several people have noted, it's not really in Commons' scope, especially insofar as it is notes for yourself and you don't want other people editing it down on the basis that it doesn't really fit Commons' scope. Part of the reason for that is that, unlike Wikipedia, Commons lacks the institutional infrastructure to vet this sort of content in any detail. Wikipedia editors keep each other honest (as does their requirement for citation), but when encyclopedia-like content appears in Commons (especially without citations), which is organized to be a media repository, it can take on an appearance of being authoritative without undergoing suitable vetting. Consequently, if we get a lot of such content, some of it is going to be "bad" and undermine the credibility of the site. It's not that your content is bad per se, it's that this site isn't (and won't be) equipped to handle it appropriately. - Jmabel ! talk 22:41, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

Currently there is only a small png file of the Japan First Party logo available on Wikimedia. I was able to extract and create a vector svg version, without the accompanying japanese text, from an official JFP pdf pamphlet off their website, for a personal graphic project I'm working on. The Wikimedia page states "This logo image consists only of simple geometric shapes or text. It does not meet the threshold of originality needed for copyright protection, and is therefore in the public domain." I thought it might be useful to someone if I were to upload it, but I'm not sure if I would be breaching copyright rules, or if I even have the appropriate privileges to contribute. Please advise. Dbootle (talk) 05:10, 29 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi Dbootle. Have you tried taking a look at COM:SVG? If the original logo is too simple to be eligible for copyright protection in the US (where the Commons servers are) and in Japan (the likely country of first publication), then a vectorization of the logo might be considered a "slavish" reproduction per COM:2D copying or might be considered a derivative work per COM:SVG#Copyright, depending on which argument you believe to be more correct. If you do the vectorization yourself, then any possible copyright associated with the vector version would (I think) be owned by you and you could upload it to Commons as long as the original logo was PD or otherwise freely licensed. You could upload the file with one license for the logo and one license for the vectorization. There might be a problem, however, if the vectorization was done by someone else. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:07, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
Yes. If your work is a "slavish reproduction" (i.e. you try your best to be true to the original, without making any creative choices), then it has no copyright in itself in most jurisdictions: if the original is too old or simple to have a copyright, then yours have no copyright either. If, on the other hand, you do enough creative choices in the process, then the result is a derivative work. If the original wasn't under copyright, then yours may or may not be, but if it is, then it's you who own that copyright and you can license the result as you wish. If the original was under copyright, then you must respect its licence: for "share alike" licences like CC-BY-SA you need to use that licence also for the derived work. –LPfi (talk) 08:37, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

About Story

I want to ask that can I upload a fictional story written by me? M.Y.Jonathan (talk) 01:16, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

  • See Commons:Project scope. Commons is for media, not text, free licensed, realistically useful for an educational purpose. So unless you think you have a good argument why it would fit in scope, Commons is probably not an appropriate place to upload your fiction. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 01:20, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
    • Stories written by yourself may be in scope for Wikibooks, but only if they have an educational use (such as stories written for school textbooks on physics). If you get it published, then it may fit Wikisource. Otherwise you probably have to find a host for your story outside the Wikimedia family of projects. –LPfi (talk) 08:42, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

How could we know? If you took the photo yourself, then it is up to you to choose licence (unless you have a contract saying otherwise). It seems you chose CC-BY-SA 4.0. If you aren't the photograph, but found the photo, then you need to use the licence the copyright owners chose (and change the "own work" claim). –LPfi (talk) 08:52, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

• @Pomfret watcher: with "Publish changes". But are you sure you are on the right site? Not a lot of reason for most relatively new users to be creating pages here on Commons, other than the implicit creation of a page when you upload a file. - Jmabel ! talk 21:54, 31 March 2023 (UTC)

Are transparent-background derivative images out of scope?

Can a create derivative files where the only change is that the new file has a transparent background, or is that out of scope? Thank-you, Edward-Woodrow (talk) 21:23, 31 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi Edward-Woodrow. I'm not sure what you've described above would be considered "creative enough" to be a derivative work. It actually sounds more like a case of COM:2D copying than not. In order for something to be considered a derivative work, there has to be enough new creative input added to an existing work to generate a new copyright for the derivative. I'm not sure making the background transparent would necessarily be sufficient to do that. Is the file you're asking about already on Commons? Can you provide the file's name if it is? Perhaps it would be easier for someone to give you a more specific answer if they knew exactly which file you're asking about. As for COM:SCOPE, simply making the background transparent also wouldn't necessarily make the file out of scope, but that could depend on the specific file itself. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:42, 31 March 2023 (UTC)
An example: Teacup.png (with transparent background) and Oorkop uit het 'Swellengrebel theeservies' met een dubbel gekroond monogram en band met bloemranken, AK-RAK-2005-1-14.jpg (the original) Edward-Woodrow (talk) 21:46, 31 March 2023 (UTC)
@Edward-Woodrow: Yes, that is welcome, and I think you've handled it mostly correctly. You might also want to use {{Derivative works}} on the original. - Jmabel ! talk 22:02, 31 March 2023 (UTC)
Alright, thank-you very much. Edward-Woodrow (talk) 22:06, 31 March 2023 (UTC)

Fan art.

What if, it’s a picture of a fan character who is, while in the universe of something the user didn’t make, is a character who they did create. Think like, … Any self insert o.c. in existence. Such as, instead of Superman, it is just a Non-canonical character taking a selfie in front of a sign reading “Welcome to metropolis” Wyi the guy in the green hoodie (talk) 15:07, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

@Wyi the guy in the green hoodie: I can't really understand your question, nor its relevance to Commons. Could you clarify? What help are you asking for? - Jmabel ! talk 18:01, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

What if all wikipedias were given an identity card from Wikipedia. Sometimes when they went to the field to take a photo of the school, they were asked for their Wikipedia identity. We recommend that all administrators and wikipedias be given identification from Wikipedia.
What if administrators and Wikipedians are given a Wikipedia ID. Sometimes a ball wants a photo. Someone asks for Wikipedia identity. Thank you, administrators and all Wikipedians. I hope my input will receive a good response from me.

All look fine to me. @Sflori: probably a caching issue on your end, since you appear to be the one who flipped it. Try looking with a different browser, it will be fine. And eventually it should settle out on your browser. - Jmabel ! talk 21:51, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for checking. I tried on two external machines in different browsers. The 120px version appears false on all machines. All other versions seem to be correct. :) May you please re-check? Sflori (talk) 21:59, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
@Sflori: Still all correct, as it was. The caching may be happening somewhere "up the line". - Jmabel ! talk 02:24, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
Yes, inside commons, it seems to look fine. Could it be that the issue is related to the article in de.wikipedia? The image flips as soon as I click on the image inside the article in Wikipedia. The effect applies also on my mobile (mobile network, different browser). Link to article: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auflaufkurve Sflori (talk) 02:38, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
Looks fine to me there as well. I remain quite certain this is some sort of caching issue and will eventually resolve. I don't see what further help anyone can give you. If you think there is a tech issue that needs addressing, you can file it on Phabricator, but I really doubt it will be anything new to them. - Jmabel ! talk 04:50, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
I'm still convinced that there are some previews not correctly generated. But if it's not reproducable, there might be no solution currently. Thank you anyway for supporting! :) Sflori (talk) 10:17, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
@Sflori: Reproducibility can depend on the regions of the world where the caches lie. It looks fine to me in the US.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:01, 2 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg image as a new user. The image you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to post COM:L compliant permission for such works on your website or social media presence or send permission via VRT. Also, any raster image will look jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the images may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia or Arabic Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F or ar:ويكيبيديا:محتوى_غير_حر because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter 153. I can't write about your deleted posts per se, perhaps an Admin like Jmabel or Alaa can.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:57, 2 April 2023 (UTC)

@Graham Beards: @Invasive Spices: Hello,

It looks like several images had been deleted that I had uploaded from ViralZone. For example:

Rotavirus genome.jpg
Rotavirus virion.jpg

Please note that although there may be a copyright note inside the image, the Viral Zone home page

https://viralzone.expasy.org/

tells on bottom right that all material is licensed under "Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License."

There has already been a discussion about this contradiction.:

User talk:Ernsts#Notification about possible deletion

The matter has been clarified with Philippe Le Mercier <Philippe.Lemercier(at)sib.swiss> early 2021.

An email correspondence by wikimedia commons admin (User:Invasive Spices) with Philippe and has been documented. The correspondence is available to trusted volunteers as ticket #2021020910004221 For details see File:Virus size.png#Summary.

For this reason I kindly ask you to restore the images.

Please let me know if there might be any further questions.

Kind regards. --19:09, 23 March 2023 (UTC) Ernsts (talk) 19:09, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

Kind regards, --Ernsts (talk) 19:57, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

@Ernsts: Hello, It's ok to ask here for advice about what can be done, but please note that the best place to request undeletion of files and have someone actually act on the matter is the page Commons:Undeletion requests. I suggest that you copy your request over there. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:23, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
Thanks. Just done. Kind regards, --Ernsts (talk) 20:44, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
@Asclepias: Sorry, I cannot see my undeltion requests any more, neither did I receive any message about status change. So I'm returning to here with the matter. Undeletion is still waiting to be done. Please note that dozends of images from the same source all were accepted, at least after the initial discussion about my first uploads from there. Kind regards --Ernsts (talk) 14:46, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
@Ernsts: These were indeed deleted by mistake. I undeleted these 2 files and reviewed the license. Please ask further undeletion on COM:UDR. It may also be faster to ask directly the admin who deleted them. In the future, it is best to ask for a License review. Thanks, Yann (talk) 15:30, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
@Ernsts: When a request is removed from the main undeletion requests (UDR) page, usually it is because it was closed by an admin and archived in an UDR archive page for a recent month. This request is archived at Commons:Undeletion requests/Archive/2023-04#File:Rotavirus virion.jpg. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:48, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

Logos

The Upload Wizard explicitly says Commons "doesn't want works created or inspired by others. eg logos". However Wikidata is full logos from here. Has something changed, or is there more info available? I'd like to add https://www.spar.at/etc.clientlibs/spar-corecomponents/clientlibs/clientlib-site/resources/images/logos/cafe-cappuccino-logo.png to https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q117317760 CjMalone (talk) 09:23, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

  • @CjMalone: Typically, logos are acceptable only if either (1) they are so so simple as to be ineligible for copyright (a different standard in different countries) or (2) the copyright owner of the logo grants a free license, typically through the COM:VRT process. This particular one looks pretty close to the line for copyright eligibility, but according to COM:TOO Austria has a pretty low threshold (e.g. just a name in cursive writing has been determined to be copyrightable there). I'm guessing you'd need an actual license from the owner of the logo. You might want to ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright, but I suspect they will give you the same answer. - Jmabel ! talk 15:58, 2 April 2023 (UTC)
Thanks @Jmabel: , that explains it.
Do you know of a third party place that collects this type of copyrighted content which links to, or linked from the Wikidata world? In the OSM world we have NSI that collects Facebook or Twitter profile image urls. Does something similar exist here? — Preceding unsigned comment added by CjMalone (talk • contribs) 17:55, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

Daumier Register

There are hundreds / thousands of images in this page taken from the Daumier Register, i.e. [16]. We are very grateful for this, but many Daumier paintings and drawings that are listed here are NOT originals but fakes/copies. For example: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Daumier_-_DR9555.jpg https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Daumier_-_DR9528.jpg https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?search=honor%C3%A9+daumier+catalogue+raisonn%C3%A9%2C+daumier+register&title=Special:MediaSearch&go=Go&type=image and many more. If the contributor of Daumier images would differentiate between ORIGINAL and FAKE/IMITATION/COPY this would be more clear. An easy fix for this would be to link all images to the corresponding DR number in the Daumier Register. Once the user clicks on the link he/she will see all the details of this particular work including the technique and whether it is an ORIGINAL or a FAKE.

Thanks for your consideration, Lilian Noack info@daumier.org Honore2022 (talk) 08:45, 31 March 2023 (UTC)
